Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars THE best book on trading I have ever read........2007-09-09

I had to get this book after reading such a mix of reviews. I was really curious how it would turn out since reviewers were either raving about it or trashing it.

After reading the 1st half of this book I was shocked to say the least. The first half of this book is worth more than all of the books I have read on trading combined. If someone trashes this book then they are either very new to trading and don't understand the points being made in this book(which I can understand because you have to get some experience under your belt to really appreciate what is being said in this book) or they are looking for a quick strategy they can read in 5 minutes and start making money. For one thing, that's never going to happen anyway.

The trading strategies in this book are very basic, so for newbies that part of the book has some good info. I was hoping for a little more advanced analysis of trading techniques, but I really didn't need that anyway. The knowledge and wisdom in the first half of this book is going to take my trading to moon.

For the newbies who didn't like this book, get a couple years experience under your belts then go back to this book and re-read the 1st half. I guarantee you, you will want to come back here and write a positive review.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting book with lack in details by very self-confident authors.......2007-06-09

When I started reading the book by Oliver Velez and Greg Capra: "Tools and Tactics for the Master Day Trader", I thought it was one of the better books on day trading. It starts out with the importance of discipline, and the lessons to be learnt from losses. It also outlines the concept that you don't buy from the market, but there is always another person on the other side of the trade that has exactly the opposite market expectation as you.

Then come four chapters with lists of rules: 7 deadly sins, 12 trading laws of success, 15 things every trader should know, and 10 lessons for the master trader. Altogether 44 rules, which don't seem to be in any systematic order. It looks like the authors were brainstorming to come up with as many rules as they could think of, and then divided them up among the four chapters. Some rules contradict one another, some important rules are next to irrelevant ones etc. Also the "Seed of Wisdom" does not help to sum up the rules because it often is not related to the part that it is supposed to summarize.

In Chapter 10 and 11 the authors talk about tools and start out by explaining things as basic as a candle stick or support and resistance. Then they dedicate two chapters to Order Systems and Level II data, and it takes until page 293 when they finally talk about trading techniques.

After having talked redundantly about general things for three quarters of the book, the authors give their ideas of entry, stop and exit techniques. What I missed most in this part is the lack of exact trading rules. Everything is expressed vaguely (e.g. p.219 "you can also opt to keep the break-even stop. This is a matter of choice." or p.322 "Sell at least half your stock if and when the stock breaks below the 5-minute low. ... These are just guidelines. We don't want to be stupid. ... Many traders will be best served selling the whole lot at this point."). This is exactly the vagueness you can't afford as a day trader. I was also disappointed that there was so little variety in the trade setups (just three entry techniques).

So my hope was high that in chapter 17 "How to put it all together" there would finally be concrete entry and exit descriptions. Instead, the authors just describe common chart formations like any other book on technical analysis (and do a worse job, too).

Throughout the book I noted an arrogant tone (p. 317: "Let's assume a master trader, let's call him Mr. Velez."). The authors speak about master traders, as if they were some kind of rock stars. No matter, how successful you are, if you quit being humble, the market can easily take everything away from you.

I am giving the book three stars because it does cover important topics for day traders like discipline, and learning from your mistakes. If you want to read a more effective book, however, I recommend the one by John F. Carter "Mastering the Trade".

4 out of 5 stars Seeds of Wisdom !.......2007-05-18

Tools and Tactics for the Master DayTrader: Battle-Tested Techniques for Day, Swing, and Position Traders.

Velez and Capra give me the impression they have traded before and are not just book writer's. You can learn a few pointer's from this book whether you are just learning or have been trading a while. It covers Candlesticks,Moving Averages, Fibs, Volume and drawing a few trendlines on the charts intraday and daily charts.
It does not go into some of the mathematical lagging stock indicators that some trader's think it might be the "Holy Grail". Those lagging indicators act like delayed instrument gages on your dashboard. Sorry, there is no Holy Grail on WallStreet predicting the future for you... better look elsewhere like yourself. The only "Holy Grail" you will ever find trading stocks is yourself there is no quick fixes to learn to trade stocks it all takes lots of time and practice.
Its to look and observe what a chart's history or footprints tell you with some seeds of wisdom.
I see so many negative reviews here about this books. I am starting to wonder whether those reader's have ever traded stocks or are just rookie trader's learning from their mistakes the first 2 years.
I have traded full-time for years and I can tell you they must be all rookie trader's hoping that a book might have all the answer's for them and their future. It would help them if they read this book a few times until it really sinks in their minds.

This book is a concise,no nonsense approach and covers everything traders need to win consistently.
As a prior reviewer mentioned which I agree...
"The key buy setup, alone is worth many times the price of the book."

2 out of 5 stars Nothing new.......2007-04-18

nothing new, nothing exciting. Everything can be found in books that are half the price. Save your money.

5 out of 5 stars FIVE STARS!!!.......2007-02-27

I would definitely give this book five stars. I really learned alot from it. If you gave it a bad review you either need to go back and read the book again or just skimmed through the book.

and to the person who sid that he "Heard" that they don't actually trade they are wrong and I thought everyone knew not always to believe what they hear. But hey, some people just believe things more easily than others.
and you can't even RATE this book one star because YOU HAVEN'T ACTUALLY READ IT!!!
You skimmed through the book and rate it one star??? WOW. that's all I have to say: wow. I'm not even going to say anything else. and people don't listen to all of those bad revievs out there. It really was a great book and is worth the money. (and so is his newer book)

and to the person who said: "This book TOTALLY rocked. I read it alot because it was so awesome"

YOU TOTTALY ROCK TOO! LOL!

Book Description

This great "how to" book covers the various mechanics of natural gas trading, including the physical (cash) market for natural gas production, transportation, distribution, and consumption. The heart of the text is the definition and demonstration of financial trading tools and techniques. It closes with discussion of more complex structures of trading and the author's philosophy on how a risk management department should function within a natural gas trading company.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Principles.......2007-05-29

The principles of gas trading laid out clearly and concisely. Perfect for my needs.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Book to Learn Natural Gas Trading.......2006-08-04

Even if you do not have a solid understanding of derivatives, this book is really good explaining step by step how the different derivatives are used for hedging natural gas; regardless if you are the producer, trader, or end user. The author gives many examples of how each derivative works. I highly recommend this book if you are starting out as a junior trader, risk products trader, supply planner, etc.

5 out of 5 stars educational sources for practical trading purposes.......2005-07-16

I have not seen any book that describes its domain with such generous detail and is geared for real life trading. The contents may not be enough for those who trade only financial energy instruments, but it is indeed a good course material for the market makers, and hedgers, namely end users and producers. I highly recommend this book to those who are involved in natural gas industry.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for Natural Gas Traders.......1998-12-05

Was very pleased with the material contained in this book. Although I am a beginner in the natural gas trading field, I found Sturm's book both easy to understand yet challenging in its scope. A great deal of emphasis is placed upon various hedging techniques and many helpful diagrams are included to portray the trading flow. Overall a very unique and insightful book for beginners and for those with years of experience in trading natural gas.

5 out of 5 stars a balanced introduction.......2007-07-30

If trading is about markets, psychology, technique, then this book is an excellent introduction to these areas. Beeing balanced and only 250 pages, the book does not cover the areas in much depth. This might be a positive or a negative according to what one wants. 5 stars because the book is easy to read and gives an excellent big picture view on trading.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book with a lot pf tips .......2007-05-07

this book is ideal for beginners and pro's that need some directions on how to make things the right way, i must say i enjoyed the small stories in between , overall whoever is looking to begin trading futures it is a must

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Place to Start Your Commodites Trading Education.......2007-05-05

George Kleinman does a fantastic job of explaining the Commodities and Futures markets. Further, he does a great job helping a new trader get some 'legs' to stand on. He provides valuable insight into developing a trading methodology, and helps the beginning trader 'find his way' in the plethora of trading solutions out there. He demystifies how trading is done, and provides solid "Western" and "Conventional" trading practices so that the beginning trader has an excellent foundation to expand their knowledge. I would say that George's suggestions and lessons in the book are the basis for my knowledge (book smarts at this point) and provided the grounding necessary for expanding my knowledge base into Fibonnaci, WD Gann, Candlesticks, and so much more. Basically, it is my opinion that every beginning trader (not stocks but Commodities and Futures) should read this book. He does an excellent job explaining how trades, stops, support, resistance, MACD, Stochastics, Trend Lines, many other various methodologies can aid a trader into making good trades. I highly recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars Reference book.......2006-07-29

This is a book esp. for begineers. You can find every detail about futures & options. The stories and examples makes the book even much valuable.

Chapter 12 (Traders Psychology), Chapter 13 (Trading Secrets) and Chapter 14 (Jesse's Secret) are good to read even for experienced traders.

The worst part of the book is technical tool TMVTT.

It's a book that you can use as reference anytime. Good to have one.

4 out of 5 stars WRITTEN BY A SUCCESSFUL TRADER.......2006-03-11

If you are interested to start learning about trading Futures, this book is a good reading. Basic to medium level information, well presented.

According to Jim Rogers, "commodities get no respect." Here are a few reasons why he thinks they should: they are easier to comprehend and study than stocks and behave more rationally since they are subject to the basic laws of supply and demand; they have outperformed many other investment options in recent years; it is foolish to ignore an entire sector of the marketplace; and a bull market is currently under way in commodities--a trend that Rogers expects to last for a least a decade longer. Further, Rogers believes that you cannot be a successful investor in stocks, bonds, or currencies without an understanding of commodities. Hot Commodities: How Anyone Can Invest Profitably in the World's Best Market is designed to introduce the novice to the basics of investing in commodities as well as explain what they are and why they are important. In doing so, he shatters some myths about the relative risks of commodities, explains the relationship between the stock and commodities markets, and provides a succinct analysis and history of the global oil, gold, lead, sugar, and coffee markets.

Rogers also offers practical advice and information for beginners, including the best resources, how to read the commodities reports in the newspaper or on television, the various ways to open an account, information on index funds (such as Rogers' own index fund that he started in 1998), mechanisms, terminology, and other vital details people must know before investing. Clearly written and entertaining, Hot Commodities offers a solid introduction to investments that many people, including financial advisors, fail to give the proper respect. --Shawn Carkonen

Book Description

The next bull market is here. It’s not in stocks. It’s not in bonds. It’s in commodities –and some smart investors will be riding that bull to record returns in the next decade.

Before Jim Rogers hit the road to write his bestselling books Investment Biker and Adventure Capitalist, he was one of the world’s most successful investors. He cofounded the Quantum Fund and made so much money that he never needed to work again. Yet despite his success, Rogers has never written a book of practical investment advice–until now.

In Hot Commodities, Rogers offers the lowdown on the most lucrative markets for today and tomorrow. In 1998, gliding under the radar, a bull market in commodities began. Rogers thinks it’s going to continue for at least fifteen years–and he’s put his money where his mouth is: In 1998, he started his own commodities index fund. It’s up 165% since then, with more than $200 million invested, and it’s the single-best performing index fund in the world in any asset class. Less risky than stocks and less sluggish than bonds,, commodities are where the money is–and will be in the years ahead. Rogers’s strategies are simple and straightforward. You can start small–a few thousand dollars will suffice. It’s all about putting your money into stuff you understand, the basic materials of everyday life, like coal, sugar, cotton, corn, or crude oil. Once you recognize the cyclical and historical trading patterns outlined here, you’ll be on your way.

In language that is both colorful and accessible, but Rogers explains why the world of commodity investing can be one of the simplest of all–and how commodities are the bases by which investors can value companies, markets, and whole economies. To be a truly great investor is to know something about commodities.

For small investors and high rollers alike, Hot Commodities is as good as gold . . . or lead, or aluminum, which are some of the commodities Rogers says could be as rewarding for investors.

5 out of 5 stars Good info.......2007-08-14

The book is well written,Jim is very knowledgeable and gives ways in which anyone can invest in commodities. He explains a complicated subject in laymans terms. He also describes the world today and how politics and logistics come into play, a fascinating book.

3 out of 5 stars Good overall intro but don't expect to make a trade after reading it.......2007-07-27

Before reading this book, I barely knew how to spell commodities, much less trade them. This book gives a good high-level introduction to what the commodities market is all about and attempts to get you jazzed about the market for the coming decade. After reading the book, you'll be able to understand the commodity trading lingo and know how to read prices, but will not have enough information (nor the confidence) to make your first trade. It lacks thorough details concerning trading in general, fundamental analysis of futures, and direction on creating a trading plan. I'm currently reading Trading Commodities & Financial Futures by George Kleinman which goes into much better detail of these subjects. I certainly got a better handle on trading by reading Hot Commodities, but it's a bit novice, even for a novice.

3 out of 5 stars Rating Jim Rogers.......2007-07-03

As a result of Jim Rogers, I've actually changed a substantial part of my portfolio. However, this is an endorsement of Jim Rogers, and not the book, "Hot Commodities." I knew no more after reading the book than I did after hearing and seeing him on TV. The message could have been summed up in about ten pages, not 255.

4 out of 5 stars cheap introduction to fundamental analysis.......2007-06-15

The author gives some of his logic why he believes the commodities market is entering a bull market for maybe the next decade, then he follows this with some alternatives to the commodities market followed by the usual introduction about how the commodities markets function. Next he turns to showing how to think about the markets as a fundamentalist--he claims he is the world's worst trader. He talks about the impact of China on the markets, as contrasted with the impact of India and other Central Asian emerging economies (including Russia). Then he illustrates the fundamentalist logic for supply, demand and world politics and their influence on the prices for oil, gold (and lead), sugar and coffee. Along the way he mixes in some of his market experience and insights.

I find the value of the book primarily in his illustration of the kind to thinking and resources needed to perform fundamental analysis of the commodities market. And this is one of the cheapest books to cover the basics.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This book is great.......2006-08-02

The previous reviewer cites the perception of the author's inflated ego. I too was distracted by the author's tendency to refer to "TD" indicator this and that and this disturbed me. However, i had the good fortune to meet the author at a Bloomberg seminar and the author explained why he chose to preface his indicators with the 'td'. The justification he gave was that his attorney wanted him to trademark and control the indicators and that was the effective way for him to accomplish that goal. I accept that reason and more than that I can overlook the petty complaint that it is distracting by concentrating upon the value I find in the indicators. I say call them whatever the author wants to since bottom line they are the best I have seen in my 35+ years in the industry.

1 out of 5 stars Ummmmmm..........2006-07-25

You may want to think twice about this one. Not to be negative, but it is very hard to follow. Clear and concise dialog is absent in favor of unnecessary "branding" if you will of common techniques mixed with completely unverified and difficult to back test methods for trading the markets. This is trading celebrity gone wrong. I would love to know the remaining balance of an investment account traded with these "TDious" indicators. You can at least save yourself from this trade.

5 out of 5 stars Prescription for successful trading from a true genius.......2006-06-16

My trading partner introduced me to the author's work. He told me that the author had worked closely with Paul Tudor Jones, Leon Cooperman, Steve Cohen and other industry titans. To be associated with these guys, he had to have something of value. After reading his books, my conclusion is that he truly possesses a creativity and market awareness that is unmatched in the industry. Although the ideas he presents can be profitably applied, I am certain that he does not share everything he knows with the reader. Regardless something is better than nothing.

5 out of 5 stars The author is a market genius!.......2006-01-02

Prior to xmas and on my birthday I received a copy of DeMark's 'New Science of Technical Analysis'. I have been a professional trader for over 20 years and currently head up the trading operation at one of the major Wall Street firms. I thought I knew how market operateed and I shared my expereince on TV, radio, and in newspapers for years. Upon reading this book and as well ass the other two in the DeMark set, I have gained a profound new awareness how markets truly behave. The author is beyoind peer in defining and describing the intricacies of price behavior. What an enlightening series of reads.

5 out of 5 stars Actually, 4 1/2 stars but truly a ground-breaking book.......2005-02-16

I enjoyed this book immensely and since I have been trading for over 30 years and never read anything approaching the uniqueness of this book. I also read with much interest the author's other two bboks. However, the reason I would prefer not to assign a full 5 stars is because I truly believe the author knows much more than the general (and sometimes specific) ideas he posits in the books. I realize that the author has no obligation to share more than the very helpful ideas we find within the pages of the book but it would have been much, much more useful to include more information. I assume that for the small amount of money invested in the books, he did not want to provide more information. Also perhaps the size of the book would be volumes. Nevertheless the new, original ideas included in the book are compelling and very helpful.

2 out of 5 stars Impressionable, but..........2007-08-25

If you are looking for clear cut set of rules/strategy that you, the individual investor, can follow to make money, then look elsewhere. The trend followers solely follow the movement of the price in exclusion to everything else. They identify a trend - uptrend or downtrend - and play upon it. As noted in the book, they react to and not predict the prices.

The methods, far and few, explained in the book are definitely not suitable for me - the retail investor. First of all, I don't have access to a trading system that can follow the rules outlined. Second, I am not a trader in the strict sense myself, where trades are triggered by a system without me realizing what is happening. To perfect such a system would take me ages given that investing isn't my main bread winner. This book will pass off as a great text book in the annals of the Ivy League schools, but when it comes to making money for you, the individual investor again, I think you are better off reading the likes of Jesse Livermore, Nicolas Darwas and William O' Neal. Read the Lessons from the Greatest Stock Traders of All Time' by John Boik or any of William O'Neals books. They define clear cut rules that we can all follow and make money. How else would I have made about 80K in the past three years compared to the first 8 years of my investing where I barely made any.

There are a lot of anecdotes in the book - literally, every page has 2-3 of these. All of these may impress, but in the end they are nice to feel scholarly about. If you are a beginning investor, the first chapter -Trend following, all of 22 pages - lays the foundation by explaining the different schools of thought regarding investing. Then there is 55 pages outlining the great trend followers are their performance but never in clear and precise terms or rules what their methods are. It almost feels sycophantic reading about other 'great' beings the way it is written. At last, after reading almost 210 pages, I got to see some system of trading. All these are pretty dry.

This is possibly the only one exception to the many great investing books in my library that I could have borrowed from the library. You will be better off reading 'How to make money in stocks..' by William O' Neal again and again and again.

2 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not very useful.......2007-06-03

I own this book, I even recommend this book. But let me explain the 2 star rating....

While the book is a good history lesson, and shows how some of these guys make a lot of money, it's just not practical advice for the rest of us. I highly doubt that many of us have a billion dollar hedge fund to run.

Also, there are no real strategies in this book.

However, it did get me thinking in a different way. So for that, it is worth the money. (The main thing was to allow for larger swings against your position, allow the market a little more room than I did before.)

I know that this guy sells other products on his website, but to be honest, I don't see them being worth it. Most of this book is about defending trend traders, which is fine, but I wasn't attacking them in the first place.

I have begun to use the 4 hour chart more with his thinking, and I have to say it makes a little more sense. Not to get caught up in "micro-movements" as I call them. But to allow massive 300 pips swings against you on a weekly chart isn't practical for most of us.

So in conclusion, I think it's a good read, but if you get what I got out of it from my review, then it may or may not be worth the money.

3 out of 5 stars It describes trend followers but does not give any sysytems.......2007-06-01

If you want to read about trend followers you can get this book. But if you want books with trend following systems do not waste your money.

5 out of 5 stars Listen to the author's podcasts before you dismiss him based on negative reviews........2007-05-25

I discovered Michael Covel in a web search for "trading podcasts" and find his audio diatribes refreshing, inspiring, offering a real perspective on trading discipline.

A link to the podcast directory is at the turtletrader dot com web site, they are just a few minutes in length and worth your time.

At least listen to the one titled "Understand your emotions", it is worth your time and an important reminder to anyone running any amount of money.

Sometimes the author uses his audio forum to respond to negative reviews of his book, if you are listening for the first time, skip the rebuttal and sample another of his podcasts.

2 out of 5 stars Trend Following: How Great Traders Make Millions in Up or Down Markets, New Expanded Edition, (Paperback).......2007-05-12

Disappointing. Long on theory and very short on practical advice. Not of much use to an individual investor. I would not recommend this book to someone looking for a "how to" book.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very good info, a little repetitive.......2007-04-28

It's a small book (compared to Murphy's classic, Tech. Anal. of the Fin. Mrkts., which is a very good starter book of technical analysis). It has good info in it. The newer verions of his classic covers much of the same info, but this one goes into more depth. Murphy is easy to read. But the book seemed rather repetitive. Murphy should have spent some time telling us how to get all the comparative info at the best price. Then the book would more useful.

5 out of 5 stars Worth Every Penny By A Factor Of 10.......2007-01-15

Probably the most bizarre thing about the stock market is it's explosive rallies and catastrophic crashes. Both occur with little warning and seemingly with little reason, but by studying intermarket analysis you quickly learn the relationship between currency trends, commodity prices, bond yields and their strong influence on the bond and stock markets. This book is one that every serious investor should own.

Dear All,
Intermarket Analysis is good and comprehensive book. For a trader its treat to have this book.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST READ FOR ANY SERIOUS INVESTOR/TRADER.......2006-08-13

Are you still trading with a narrow vision? We live in a world beyond our imagination. The impact of the Asian markets on the US, relationship between crude oil and transports, impact of Taiwanese semi-conductors on the $SOX, etc... All these are crucial information that can help anticipate market direction. I highly recommend this book to any serious investor/trader.

2 out of 5 stars Hazy Subshine.......2007-10-12

I rated MST two stars because the prose reminds me of Kung Fu's Shaolin Monk, Kwai Chang Caine. Unlike John Murphy, Alexander Elder and Steve Nison, Mr. Farley fails to clearly communicate his ideas and the writing is verbose. I read the entire book, learned a few new things but it was like panning for gold.

3 out of 5 stars A good, if hard to read, trading book.......2007-07-28

I felt the need to post a review because it seems to me most reviewers think the only options for rating a product are 1 a 5. To preface: I'm a college student who has recently been looking into technical analysis. This book was recommended to me by a friend. I don't claim to be an expert in trading.

First of all, I have to agree, this book is incredibly hard to read. The author comes off as an over-verbose pretentious individual.

Difficulty aside, this book gives you an incredible wealth of information on trading. I couldn't disagree more with a past reviewer who claims that this book is marketed as a "Get rich quick". I feel this book is quite the opposite. It gives you a very practical overview of many of the popular indicators and TA techniques(as opposed to say, the introductory explanation as offered in Murphy's) as well as lots of general tips to aspiring swing traders. It then goes on to outline some very thoroughly defined trading systems and all the knowledge needed to execute them.

This book is long and to be honest, painfully boring sometimes. However if you are looking to increase your knowledge of trading, I feel this is a book that should definitely be considered. Look elsewhere if you want a quick weekend read.

2 out of 5 stars No substance.......2007-04-18

There are some good principles in the book, but its way to easy to get lost in all of the repetition and blandness. The section on fibonocci retracements was useful and seems to work well for me in practice; however, I didn't get much else from the book.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best.......2006-11-12

I had read a lot of reviews over this book before deciding to purchase it. The reviews--more than any trading book out there, at the time--pretty much had the vote split between people who absolutely hated it and those who absolutely loved it. The deciding factor that lead to my purchase was the author (a professional trader of many years) of another book who spoke highly of "The Master Swing Trader"'s author, and the work he had done in writing this piece.

This is not a fluff book to hook you into trading. This book is geared towards those few individuals out there who wish to make trading a profession, rather than a passing fancy. I read a large number of those fluff books during my decision to become a professional day trader. I wish I had picked up this book first, because it goes into all the techniques I now use today in order to be successful. Not only does this book discuss the various trading techniques and their set-ups, along with all so important exit strategies, but more importantly it discusses why price moves in certain directions, why it jumps forth, why it breaks down--basically, it offers rare insights into the psyche of the trading crowd that is the market (all those traders out there who are competing against you).

The writing style has been berated as too 'text-book' in presentation, but I beg to differ. It flows with an elegant prose that distinguishes the author not only as a true trader, but also as a true writer who can hook those who wish to relate to the generously offered insights. Only those who have been through the grueling battles in actual trading scenarios and who hunger to know why things went right or why they went wrong, will appreciate this work and set it up on their bookshelf next to the other trading classics.

If you are used to simplistic writing such as can be found on any dimestore bookshelf, with the likes of Stephen King, this elevated work may certainly be beyond your grasp. If, however, you can digest proper grammer and get past poetic prose, this book will open a window rarely seen before. It is probably one of the best all around trading books ever written.

Good luck to those aspiring traders who hunger to understand market sentiment.

1 out of 5 stars WOW...just wow.......2006-11-09

What a horrible book. The writing style of the author is horrendous! Impossible to follow or even comprehend what he is trying to teach. All the information in this book is readily available online. Save your money and buy "Mastering the trade" by Scott instead.

Rancorous political infighting surrounds the selection of a successor to the dying head of the CIA just as Mitch Rapp, the agency's top operative, embarks on a dangerous mission to take out a well-known German industrialist believed to be supplying Middle East terrorists with highly sensitive equipment critical to constructing a nuclear bomb. When Rapp's ultimately successful mission is compromised from within, ailing CIA director Thomas Stansfield puts his imprimatur on the efforts of his chosen successor, Irene Kennedy, director of the agency's Counterterrorism Center, to identify the powerful interests both inside and outside the agency that wanted Rapp to fail.

The motive soon becomes clear; there are people who'll stop at nothing to remove Kennedy from the helm of the agency after Stansfield dies. One thing they didn't count on was Rapp's survival, and now he's a lethal weapon whose sights are fixed directly on the most powerful among them. This is a strong, swift thriller, a bit predictable (the senator in the black hat has dogs named Caesar and Brutus) but nonetheless involving. Author Vince Flynn sustains the dramatic tension from the opening paragraph to the last; in Mitch Rapp, he's got the makings of a promising series hero. --Jane Adams

Book Description

When diplomacy has failed and military intervention is deemed inappropriate, our leaders sometimes take THE THIRD OPTION.

Her detractors will resort to extreme measures to prevent her from taking the reins -- which makes Rapp an expendable asset. But Mitch Rapp is no one's pawn, and he will stop at nothing to find out who has set him up.

5 out of 5 stars Another Superb Thriller From Vince Flynn.......2007-09-26

I just love this Mitch Rapp series. He's definitely our over the top guy. I hope there are people somewhat like him in real life. Prime characters: Mitch Rapp counter terrorist operative; Dr. Irene Kennedy Director of the CIA's Counterterrorism Center;CIA Director Thomas Stansfield the ultimate master spy;President Robert X. Hayes;Senator Hank Clark Chairman of The Senate Select Committee on Intelligence;Congressman Albert Rudin Chairman of The House Select Committee on Intelligence. Peter Cameron a man for sale with 24 years of experience in The Agency's Office of Security. Secretary of State Charles Midleton an elitist snob who thought he should be running things. Clark has designs on the Presidency.Rudin has a deep hatred of the CIA. Plenty of spellbinding excitement as the plots unwind while Rapp thwarts the ambitions of Clark,Rudin & Midleton to take over the CIA.

4 out of 5 stars Better buy Seperation of Power to go with this book. Good book, just incomplete if you don't read Seperation of Power after!.......2007-07-25

Third Option and Seperation of Power could really be one book. If this was Clancy it would have been. Growing trend seems to be in a certain size book for this genre so I have an idea that's why it was split. Combined, these books offer a great story and compelling plot with plenty of action to go around. I really like the Mitch Rapp character. Do yourself a favor if your considering reading this book and pickup Seperation of Power at the same time. I was lucky and had ordered the whole Mitch Rapp series after reading "Consent to Kill". I'm out of order a bit as this was a latter book, but I've since started at the beginning and like I said enjoyed this book, but at the end I was like "Hugh"! The ending was incomplete until you read Seperation of Power.

4 out of 5 stars Kept my attention.......2007-07-23

I have grown to love Vince Flynn. I have listened to the CD's for all of his books during long drives between Northern and Southern California. I'm never bored and wish there were more stories available. At least he still does his own writing.

4 out of 5 stars An exciting political thriller.......2007-06-05

Vince Flynn has taken the baton from Tom Clancy and is now one of the premier political thriller writers of today. In the Third Option, his third novel, Flynn explores the underworld of politics, where the "third option" of quietly snuffing out your enemies is often taken. Series hero Mitch Rapp is in Germany preparing to assassinate a German providing weapons to Saddam Hussein (pre-9/11). Rapp is successful, but then two members of the team turn on Rapp. Rapp survives and is left wondering what went wrong and why?

The rest of the action takes place in the USA, with secretive teams working against each other killing and betraying each other. Rapp returns to the US and tries to find out who betrayed him and to also make sure girlfriend Anna Reilly is safe. Once Rapp rules out Irene Kennedy, his boss at CIA, he goes after the true bad guys.

You can tell Flynn has done his research. The Third Option is entertaining and a fun read for political thriller fans. One complaint I have is Flynn's writing style. He writes in third person omnicient, which means from paragraph to paragraph, the points of view of the characters change and we know what all characters are thinking, including the bad guys. (You'll know who betrayed Rapp early in the novel.) Flynn has written several political thrillers and I plan on reading them all eventually. While I enjoyed The Third Option, the characters weren't that strong. Still, the book was heavy on action and political maneuverings and is a must read for fans of the genre.

5 out of 5 stars This is the one that hooked me.......2007-05-13

This was the first Vince Flynn novel I read. I then had to go back and read the first books in order because I was hooked. I've read all of his books and now reserve new releases on Amazon because I eagerly await the next book. This is from a guy that always waited for the paperback version.

2 out of 5 stars Not worth the Time and the Money.......2005-05-01

I am a student who happens to have read both John Hull's 'Options, Futures and Other Derivatives' and his 'Fundamentals'. To say that 'Options, Futures and Other Derivatives' is a good book is a great understatement, and can even be considered an insult. Yet, this book, which is targeted at readers who are not as acquainted with derivatives fails to impress. Through out the book you can feel how John Hull struggles to explain things in a simple manner. Sadly, his efforts have failed, and this is most evident when my fellow classmates had a hard time understanding the materials starting from Swaps. When we reached the section on options pricing, the book lacks the rigorous math that is needed for students to fully appreciate the beauty of deriving things like Black-Scholes. Overall, if you are a beginner, go straight to 'Options, Futures, and Derivatives'. This book is not worth wasting time over.

3 out of 5 stars not worth the money.......2005-02-03

As promised this book contains no calculus. However it looks more like a formula sheet. There are some typos in some important parts. The intuitive explanations for some important topics are omitted or not well explained.Solutions manual is just a waste of time.Actually the book doesn't contain good questions at all.Despite the fact that it's one of the most used textbooks for the entry level in options and futures it's really not worth the money. One can find online lecture notes and do with them without having to pay that much money.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2002-06-11

I needed to understand everything I could about Futures and Options in a short time and this book was perfect for that purpose. The introduction about futures and options is great and the content in general is very easy to understand and follow. I really liked the examples and the way the author explained each topic. However, I have to confess that maybe my engineering background helped me to understand the math behind, but I believe that even if you don't have much mathematical knowledge you can follow the book.

A big plus of this book is that it contains a chapter about Value at Risk and one focused more on more recent types of derivatives contracts (e.g., energy, weather, etc.).

In general, I think that with this book you could cover more ground more quickly than with other books.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book!!.......2002-04-19

This book is a great introduction to options and futures, I do not have any university experience in mathematics and was able to follow nearly all that I have read so far. However, if you are not comfortable with substituting into equations and following equation derivations, maybe option/futures trading is not for you.

3 out of 5 stars You better know your math.......2002-01-29

The book is a good book IF you know your math. It has been a while since I have done calculus and finance classes and needed to review other books in order to understand all the math. I laughed at the introduction when the author stated math is not needed. While this is partially true, it is because the author expects the reader to memorize his formulas and so omitts some of the steps of how the formulas come about. Do not try to do this book without help or even better yet, without the solution manual. It was a grueling class with more than 1/2 the class dropping it because the book was so hard to understand.
