Customer Reviews:
THE best book on trading I have ever read........2007-09-09
I had to get this book after reading such a mix of reviews. I was really curious how it would turn out since reviewers were either raving about it or trashing it.
After reading the 1st half of this book I was shocked to say the least. The first half of this book is worth more than all of the books I have read on trading combined. If someone trashes this book then they are either very new to trading and don't understand the points being made in this book(which I can understand because you have to get some experience under your belt to really appreciate what is being said in this book) or they are looking for a quick strategy they can read in 5 minutes and start making money. For one thing, that's never going to happen anyway.
The trading strategies in this book are very basic, so for newbies that part of the book has some good info. I was hoping for a little more advanced analysis of trading techniques, but I really didn't need that anyway. The knowledge and wisdom in the first half of this book is going to take my trading to moon.
For the newbies who didn't like this book, get a couple years experience under your belts then go back to this book and re-read the 1st half. I guarantee you, you will want to come back here and write a positive review.
Interesting book with lack in details by very self-confident authors.......2007-06-09
When I started reading the book by Oliver Velez and Greg Capra: "Tools and Tactics for the Master Day Trader", I thought it was one of the better books on day trading. It starts out with the importance of discipline, and the lessons to be learnt from losses. It also outlines the concept that you don't buy from the market, but there is always another person on the other side of the trade that has exactly the opposite market expectation as you.
Then come four chapters with lists of rules: 7 deadly sins, 12 trading laws of success, 15 things every trader should know, and 10 lessons for the master trader. Altogether 44 rules, which don't seem to be in any systematic order. It looks like the authors were brainstorming to come up with as many rules as they could think of, and then divided them up among the four chapters. Some rules contradict one another, some important rules are next to irrelevant ones etc. Also the "Seed of Wisdom" does not help to sum up the rules because it often is not related to the part that it is supposed to summarize.
In Chapter 10 and 11 the authors talk about tools and start out by explaining things as basic as a candle stick or support and resistance. Then they dedicate two chapters to Order Systems and Level II data, and it takes until page 293 when they finally talk about trading techniques.
After having talked redundantly about general things for three quarters of the book, the authors give their ideas of entry, stop and exit techniques. What I missed most in this part is the lack of exact trading rules. Everything is expressed vaguely (e.g. p.219 "you can also opt to keep the break-even stop. This is a matter of choice." or p.322 "Sell at least half your stock if and when the stock breaks below the 5-minute low. ... These are just guidelines. We don't want to be stupid. ... Many traders will be best served selling the whole lot at this point."). This is exactly the vagueness you can't afford as a day trader. I was also disappointed that there was so little variety in the trade setups (just three entry techniques).
So my hope was high that in chapter 17 "How to put it all together" there would finally be concrete entry and exit descriptions. Instead, the authors just describe common chart formations like any other book on technical analysis (and do a worse job, too).
Throughout the book I noted an arrogant tone (p. 317: "Let's assume a master trader, let's call him Mr. Velez."). The authors speak about master traders, as if they were some kind of rock stars. No matter, how successful you are, if you quit being humble, the market can easily take everything away from you.
I am giving the book three stars because it does cover important topics for day traders like discipline, and learning from your mistakes. If you want to read a more effective book, however, I recommend the one by John F. Carter "Mastering the Trade".
Seeds of Wisdom !.......2007-05-18
Tools and Tactics for the Master DayTrader: Battle-Tested Techniques for Day, Swing, and Position Traders.
Velez and Capra give me the impression they have traded before and are not just book writer's. You can learn a few pointer's from this book whether you are just learning or have been trading a while. It covers Candlesticks,Moving Averages, Fibs, Volume and drawing a few trendlines on the charts intraday and daily charts.
It does not go into some of the mathematical lagging stock indicators that some trader's think it might be the "Holy Grail". Those lagging indicators act like delayed instrument gages on your dashboard. Sorry, there is no Holy Grail on WallStreet predicting the future for you... better look elsewhere like yourself. The only "Holy Grail" you will ever find trading stocks is yourself there is no quick fixes to learn to trade stocks it all takes lots of time and practice.
Its to look and observe what a chart's history or footprints tell you with some seeds of wisdom.
I see so many negative reviews here about this books. I am starting to wonder whether those reader's have ever traded stocks or are just rookie trader's learning from their mistakes the first 2 years.
I have traded full-time for years and I can tell you they must be all rookie trader's hoping that a book might have all the answer's for them and their future. It would help them if they read this book a few times until it really sinks in their minds.
This book is a concise,no nonsense approach and covers everything traders need to win consistently.
As a prior reviewer mentioned which I agree...
"The key buy setup, alone is worth many times the price of the book."
Nothing new.......2007-04-18
nothing new, nothing exciting. Everything can be found in books that are half the price. Save your money.
FIVE STARS!!!.......2007-02-27
I would definitely give this book five stars. I really learned alot from it. If you gave it a bad review you either need to go back and read the book again or just skimmed through the book.
and to the person who sid that he "Heard" that they don't actually trade they are wrong and I thought everyone knew not always to believe what they hear. But hey, some people just believe things more easily than others.
and you can't even RATE this book one star because YOU HAVEN'T ACTUALLY READ IT!!!
You skimmed through the book and rate it one star??? WOW. that's all I have to say: wow. I'm not even going to say anything else. and people don't listen to all of those bad revievs out there. It really was a great book and is worth the money. (and so is his newer book)
and to the person who said: "This book TOTALLY rocked. I read it alot because it was so awesome"
YOU TOTTALY ROCK TOO! LOL!

Customer Reviews:
Not recommended for serious readers.......2007-10-22
The author did NOT explain thing clearly sometimes, I recommend Robert McDonald's book: Derivative Markets. It explains things more clearly.
Good.......2007-09-14
The book was in great condition. It took only five days to get the book.
The greatest concise reference for the fundamentals of financial engineering.......2007-05-30
Whilst this text was not a recommended text for my Australian investments course, it was more useful than any other reference material prescribed by my professional body and proved more than its value over the space of just a few weeks. I encourage especially those that may be sitting on the fence, thinking it is a lot of money (because it is), that this text is worth every cent if you are in need of the best derivatives pricing book that exists today - this is it.
Solid textbook.......2007-05-08
This textbook has been very helpful for my financial instruments class (MBA level). Good examples and explanation of formulas.
Good Book Humayun R Ali.......2007-03-01
I am in the first few chapters and finding the book easier to read than other financial books. I like the examples to explain the purpose of futures and options. The first few chapters introduce you to futures and options then gets into more advanced topics. I also got the student study guide. There are certain books that are well worth the price, this is one of them. It is not a "get rich quick" guide, but rather a book designed to give the reader an in depth understanding.

Customer Reviews:
Very Useful.......2006-07-21
Great book with very detailed examples on the relationship between different fixed income instruments. My only complaint (and it is a very minor one) is lack of problems at the end of each chapter to help solidify the concepts. Otherwise, an excellent book.
Ver practical book with detailed examples.......2006-02-25
This is a very practical book with detailed examples to help reader with the basic concept and Eurodollar Futures and Options. Very useful for beginners in this field. The last half of the book is dealing with more advanced topic more suitable for fix incoming researchers.
The Standard!.......2003-08-06
Clearly the best book on Eurodollar futures and options. The book is a must for anyone involved in fixed income securities.
Highly recommended.......2003-07-23
Having just finished reading the author's treatment of bond futures in the 'Treasury Bond Basis,' I was happy to see that Burghardt was updating some of his material from the early 1990s on Eurodollar futures. The 'Bond Basis' was an excellent and thorough analysis, and 'The Eurodollar Futures and Options Handbook' follows the same trend.
He provides an excellent overview of the institutional details of Eurodollars and their uses. The book is at its strongest when dealing with issues of the convexity bias and also scores high by not neglecting important issues like the stub period. Perhaps my favorite chapter was on callable bonds and the extension/compression risk, which, while a little misplaced in a book on Eurodlllars, still provided a very lucid explanation of the relevant issues.
With regard to options, the author touches upon some of the interest strategic combinations using serial and mid-curve options, but I feel that he could've delved a bit deeper in this part of the book. It's the only area in which I felt the book was somewhat lacking.
Having said all that, if you're looking to learn about Eurodollar futures, I can't imagine there's a better book out there. This is an excellent compilation of a number of Burghardt's research from the 1990s together with more recent updates. Even if Eurodollars are not your main area of expertise, this book will still help you to gain a more solid understanding of many of the pertinent topics in fixed income.

Great book with rare insight.......2006-04-20
The chapter on level 2 alone is worth the price of the book. Yes the markets have changed and will continue to change, but you can always apply the general principles. Example: accumulation is accumulation regardless of what the market conditions are. Chris points out how to spot accumulation on level 2 and T&S, and if you grasp the idea, you should be able to spot them in any market with the tools available.
Very useful, if somewhat out of date..........2002-02-17
There is much useful material, along with a thoughtful approach to creating a daytrading discipline, in this book. I don't fully agree with (and wouldn't expect to) all of Lewis' statements, and, as you might expect, given the changes in the trading environment over the last couple of years, many of his methods and observations are arguably already out of date, but others still apply, and his overall philosophy, perspective, and attitude are probably more important, in my opinion, than the particulars of his personal approach as practiced in and around late 2000. The text includes numerous clear, concrete, and detailed examples, though you may have to look past an L2 screen with a stack of QCOM buyers at 343 13/16 (I just never get over mania-market prices) to receive the message.
SOMEONE SUCCESSFULL WITH THE SAME INTERESTS AS US FINALLY TA.......2001-09-08

These strategies don't work.......2001-05-24
I lost money using these strategies. Buy Steve Nison book if you want a good book on TA. This one just doesn't measure up.
All in all, a rather decent book.......2000-11-16
The good points: first, the book's emphasis is on trading the open, offering a straight forward strategy for playing momentum type gaps. Second, the book has a thorough review of TA basics filtered by practical and experienced advice. Third, there were several odds and ends (like NASDAQ having two data feeds, do the S&P Futures really say anything, etc) that were indeed helpful.
The not so good points: while, its all there, you have to really read the text carefully to extract what you need - meaning it could have been better organized for flow in some chapters. Second, a week in the life "Trading Week" would have been more satisfying if it had been two weeks long and not one (the author might disagree).
All in all, a rather decent book that I value for its level-headed, lets stick to the basics, here's what really works kind of thinking.

More like 4 common mistakes.......2007-06-27
This book is a joke. It should've been a pamphlet, because the pages could've been reduced to 30 pages-tops. The 4 mistakes can be found in any basic principles of investing in stocks, futures, funds, etc.
Good Book For Beginners.......2007-05-15
Experienced traders should already know what's in this book, but those new to options trading would probably benefit from reading this book early in their careers. The first chapter, on implied volatility, is very good and Kaeppel, unlike a lot of other authors, gives you an objective method for making judgments about relative implied volatilities, which can help you shape your trading decision. Prose is easily digestible and Kaeppel slams home his points. A quick read.

Customer Reviews:
Not practical.......2004-05-22
I anxiously waited for this book to arrive and was disappointed. Though the material may apply to some traders, it was like reading a physics manual. Very little up to date practical info. Candlesticks are not discussed at all. This book may be OK for a casual look over, but there are far better books such as Profitable Candlestick Trading by Bigalow, Toni Turners books, Nissans Candlestick books, Elders books, The Disciplined Trader, The Market Makers Edge, and many others that get into the real meat if you want to learn the art of day, swing, and position trading. Trading is not a get rich quick scheme, it is not gambling, but rather a deliberate planned approach to trading stocks and futures for fun and profit. It takes a lot of hard work and years of study to be consistently successful. You are going to have to focus on the art of the trade, not the money to get it done. Reading all of the books you can find on the subject is definitely suggested. But this one, I cannot recommend.
Tried to encompass a lot, achieved none.......2003-06-29
I had rated the author's first book "Trading rules: Strategies for success" with 5 stars. I never expected such a frustration with this book.
Perhaps the trader did try to make this book as a day trader's manual by including everything he deemed fit into a 322 page book: trading psychology, rules drawn from his own experience, chaos theory and in particular many TA tools like Market Profile, Elliot Wave, Gann Fan, RSI, Stochastics and so on. He then used nearly 40% of the book in 14 cases to elaborate those tools. The problem is, though I believe it's the intent of the author to make the book as concise as possible, it's simply impossible for most, even some professionals, to grasp the usage of the aforesaid TA tools. Even worse, the cases just did not help at all.
In a word, a big disappointment for this one and I suggest those who would like to give the author a try to bet on his first book "Trading Rules: Strategies for success".
Don't waste your money as I did!.......2000-05-17
Way too much unusable information. I kept waking up throughout the book, hoping to get to the parts about day-trading I could put into practice. (It never happened)
Too much Theory.......1999-06-28
I was looking for "How To" Day trading book. Reading this book was torture. I felt Mr. Eng was trying harder to impress upon the reader his vast knowledge of the theory of economics, rather than teaching one how to day trade. I admit, I couldn't force myself to read the whole book. By the time I finished part two, feeling I'd gained nothing out of those 186 awful pages, I moved on to more exciting authors.
This book is soooo technical, it turns you off..........1999-06-15
This book looks good, had one or two good reviews. But I wasted my money on it, because it put me to sleep. Written for the older crowd, with techniques used in the 80's. Definetely did not help me much, even though I sadly read %70 of it.

Customer Reviews:
Best book I've read on children and schools.......2005-12-26
I cannot recommend this book enough. It offers sensible and practical solutions to many of the most common issues children have in school, such as boredom, popularity, and academic frustration. And it discusses the unspoken rules that exist in many schools (how much parents are really expected to help with homework, etc.). I only wish I had read it years earlier.
informative and very readable.......2001-12-07
Anne Rambo writes from the best possible perspective. Both mother and expert she gives clear information, and lots of it, in a readable and empathetic way. Her book is a pleasure to read. Ms Rambo gives detail and further contacts and lets us know our rights and responsibilities. She shows how other parents go through the things we do. She gives hope and practical ways to get through difficult times. Did you know you can request assessment for your child at any time and your school must respond? Did you hear of Wardolf schools? Anne Rambo gives all sorts of interesting information and has you feeling she's your own concerned expert.
Great gift idea.......2001-12-07
I work with families who have experienced difficulties with their children while in school. This book has been written as a helpful tool for any parent with children in a U.S. school. The book is easy to understand and follow: the chapters can be read separately or all together. Dr. Rambo's professionalism comes through as she helps parents understand their children's experiences with the school system. Another valuable asset of the
book is that Dr. Rambo has provided URL web page addresses, phone
numbers, and addresses to get additional specific information on
what has been discussed in each chapter. That is very handy for the readers. My suggestion for those who don't know what gift to get their loved ones is to buy this book. Parents will not regret
buying and reading this book.
Great help for young parents.......2001-11-28
Dr. Rambo's I Know My Child Can Do Better is a marvelous book for young parents wanting to help their children in school ---- caring, concrete, humorous, and totally free of jargon and diagnostic labels.
We bought three copies to pass on, and, after seeing the book and reading the enticing table of contents, so did six of our friends who wanted to lend a helping hand to their school-age grandchildren.
