Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource Manual.......2007-03-08

I purchased 3 different books regarding faciliation techniques and guidelines and this was the ultimate. It is set out very clearly, provides background to faciliation and then systematically steps through an end-to-end process including a wide range of techniques to select from when developing a plan for a facilitation workshop.

5 out of 5 stars A TOP-NOTCH, IN-DEPTH INTRODUCTION TO FACILITATION........2005-08-09

An extraordinarily rich and in-depth introduction to the subject. Each chapter is written by one or more experts. The book covers such topics as:

- creating an ongoing client relationship;
- the skilled facilitator approach;
- process issues such as difficult personalities;
- facilitation planning and preparation;
- building trust;
- the art of drawing out the best in people;
- building a collaborative environment;
- facilitating the whole system in the room;
- improvisation in facilitation;
- virtual meetings;
- facilitating communication in group decision making discussions;
- how to build you facilitation expertise.

These topics are but a sampling, to give some idea of the scope and depth of this most valuable volume, which takes the reader far deeper than methods and techniques. The book is well organized and very accessible. Based on our organization diagnosis, design and change consulting experience (www.FutureOrganization.com), we find this book to be a terrific resource for practitioners.

5 out of 5 stars The Facilitation Reference Book.......2005-04-20

I have over 35 years of experience in facilitation, working in villages, multinational companies, intergovernmental bodies and not-for-profit organizations. The IAF Handbook of Group Facilitation is the reference book of facilitation. From the day it arrived I began using it.

Chapters cover a wide array of applications, methods and theory of faciliation. Topics such as visual facilitation, the use of stories in facilitation, training of facilitators, facilitation as a communications tool and much more make this book a must have for those concerned with the profession of facilitation

          5 out of 5 stars Pavlichev and Garson.......2003-11-18

          This book demonstrates the state of the art in digital government. Rather than writing about what e-government could be, the authors take a reasoned look at the topic. The book is therefore neither overly optimistic nor is it hand wringingly critical. The international dimension is handled nicely in several chapters that extend the analysis to countries outside the US.

          The book can easily become a standard reference for those who study e-government.

          5 out of 5 stars Solid contribution to the Electronic Government Literature.......2003-11-04

          Pavlichev and Garson provide a beneficial and thorough treatment of electronic/digital government, examining technical, management and policy issues with both theory and practice. For both students and practitioners of electronic/digital government, Pavlichev and Garson offer an excellent overview of how we got here, where we are, where we want to go and the challenges along the way.

            Book Description

            Logistics and the Extended Enterprise is the result of a four-year, $1 million research project devoted to the study of best practices in supply chain management—a necessity for companies that want to be competitive in a global business environment. Written by members of the University of Maryland's Supply Chain Management Center, this important book takes a first-of-its-kind look at supply chain and logistics/transportation management organization structure. It offers a paradigm for successfully implementing a global supply chain and explains the role logistics plays in enabling this approach.

            The book answers the question of how organizations can best apply supply chain management practices to break down internal and external walls and become more effective extended enterprises, with a focus on lessons learned at some of the world's leading corporations. The authors gained first-hand insights into this subject through interviews, site visits, focus groups, and targeted surveys involving over 600 companies across a broad range of industries. This book summarizes their core research findings and conclusions, using case studies from such companies as Amoco, DuPont, Johnson & Johnson, UPS, Georgia Pacific, and others.

            Logistics and the Extended Enterprise will provide the reader with both the conceptual and analytic tools necessary to manage a global supply chain and put a world-class logistics operation in place.

            I had Dr. Lomax as a professor and he is a brilliant man and his book conveys that. It is an absolute must read for anyone considering overseas assignments.

            5 out of 5 stars An International Manager's MUST READ.......2002-03-22

            A must read for anyone contemplating an overseas assignment or for anyone in a position to send key people abroad. Unlike many management how-to's this one is written from first hand experience, from both sides of the desk-sender and sendee. The light though pithy writing style carries the reader easily along, is engaging and clearly informative. The case studies Lomax uses are to the point and vividly descriptive; the lessons flow in a most logical and easy to follow sequence. Many illustrations, artfuly executed, mirror the writers easy style, add a measure of amusement and dramatize the subject matter. It's a shame that a high quality, clearly presented text on this subject has not been available in the past. The angst of so many returning "expats" might have been avoided. A real classic- destined to the difinitive work of its genre.

              4 out of 5 stars A global snapshot.......2003-05-07

              For people who want to get an overview of global clusters, what they are, what they can do to a nation's innovation system and its economy, what they have in common and how they differ in these global regions.

              It is easy reading and gives a good global perspective. It highlights the local traits and permits comparisons with other geographical clusters, although it does not go as indepth one may hope for further academic research. Given the interview based research style, however, it keeps it lively and is not as "dry" as many other academics books.

              The book makes clear that Silicon Valley and Boston's Route 128 are no longer the only innovation clusters.

              1 out of 5 stars OUTDATED!!!.......2003-04-04

              This book may have been useful back when the sock pocket was a big celebrity. In today's marketplace, this book just doesn't add any significant value. I have respect for the authors since I have heard them speak in San Francisco. It's too bad the hype doesn't live up to my expectations. The Internet Economy of the late 90s deserves better.

              1 out of 5 stars A so--so book not living up to the hype.......2003-02-13

              When I first bought this book, I could not wait to read it. Unfortunately the book is more hype than anything else. At times I felt like I should spend a day in the library reading articles on microfiche and saved the money I spent.

              It is sad since I have heard the authors in Paris many, many times and now I feel like I was cheated. It is a shame.

              5 out of 5 stars An important work.......2002-10-31

              I found this to be an important work given our increasingly global business environment. The international collaboration of the authors, coupled with the book's focus, provide an important basis upon which we can begin to understand how the international business environment operates today.

              5 out of 5 stars Creating Regional Wealth in the Innovation Economy.......2002-09-24

              Saperstein and Rouach have achieved a multi-layered analysis of the new global economy, focusing on countries whose institutions recognize and invest in human intellectual resources and foster a synergy of government, commerce and education.
              As well as examining economic giants, this book provides a fascinating account of how small countries like Sweden, Ireland and Israel have prospered by finding unique niches in the world marketplace, rather than attempting to replicate American models. Instead of providing a one-way channel for a continuation of the "brain-drain," these countries have adapted to the new economic paradigm by better protecting and keeping more of their most precious assets, the wealth of their best and brightest.
              Saperstein and Rouach have also produced a highly readable text, mixing history with narrative, case studies and interviews that capture both the long view of economic evolution and the people and companies that have place their stamps on the new economy.
              Lastly, this book provides the optimistic theme that economic reform and investment in humuman resources provides the surest path to both individual dignity and a stable political and social climate.
