This book covers the major subjects related to e-payment such as, for example, public key infrastructure, smart cards, payment agents, digital cash, SET protocols, and micro-payment. Its first part covers the infrastructure for secure e-payment over the Internet, whereas in the second part a variety of e-payment methods and systems are described. This edited volume offers a well-written and sound technical overview of the state of the art in e-payment for e-business developers, graduate students, and consultants. It is also ideally suited for classes and training courses in e-commerce or e-payment.
Customer Reviews:
Solid & Easy To Read.......2005-02-07
I thought this's a very "typical" academic text book with lots of complex and head-spinning algorithms pointing you to nowhere. And, I was wrong.
Truly, I'm impressed. This book not only fills with rich contents on electronic payments and case studies, but also it's well written in a simple, easy-to-read style. For people like me who wants to know more about payment technologies in electronic commerce, you will find this book very helpful. In general, this book is divided into two parts. The first part covers the fundamental knowledge on security infrastructure, like basic security, cryptography, digital signatures, authentication, PKI, as well as smart cards, biometrics usage in electronic commerce. The second part gets you to the heart of various e-payment systems, like digital cash, digital checks, SET, credit card payment, and micropayments, etc. For each e-payment systems, the book depicts the protocols to help readers to understand the overall process. It addresses the pros and cons. It shows some case studies in real life application scenarios such as Octopus Card in Hong Kong, Visa Cash, and PayPal, etc. For advanced readers, lots of leads can also be found from the reference page for further readings. Overall, this is no doubt an excellent book on electronic payment technologies. Very solid!

Book Description
As magnetic stripe cards are being replaced by chip cards that offer consumers and businesses greater protection against fraud, a new standard for this technology is being introduced by Europay, MasterCard, and Visa (EMV). This cutting-edge, new book provides you with a comprehensive overview of the EMV chip solution and explains how this technology provides a chip migration path, where interoperability plays a central role in the business model.
The book offers you a better understanding of the security problems associated with magnetic stripe cards, and presents the business case for chip migration. Moreover, it explains the implementation of multi-application selection mechanisms in EMV chip cards and terminals, and shows you how to design a multi-application EMV chip card layout. This first-of-its-kind resource also discusses the organizational and management issues in connection with the EMV chip migration and the use of EMV chip cards in e-commerce and m-commerce transactions. An excellent reference for today's IT/e-commerce professionals and post-graduate student alike, the book helps you fully understand this emerging, complex payment card technology.
Customer Reviews:
Not for Me........2006-02-28
This book is written for technical people. The overall tone is dull and pedantic. The contents will be difficult to follow for those who do not have mathematical or programming background.
Anyone who has an overall understanding of the EMV specifications will have very little use for the material in this book. There is nothing of note with respect to specific card schemes.
Business people can get much of the non-technical information in the book for free from other sources.

Praise for The Art & Science of Technology Transfer
"Phyl Speser's personality comes across in the text-complicated, intrigued, highly rational, insightful, rich in context, and fun. She had me smiling throughout. The text is thorough, filled with the practical examples, details, and guidelines useful to learn and practice this often-arcane subject, while never losing sight of an overarching paradigm for getting new technology out of the lab and into the market. I am certain that other teachers will find it as valuable as I have."

Customer Reviews:
Comprehensive, Unique & Valuable.......2006-07-10
As a lawyer, AUTM member, business professor and technology entrepreneur, I highly recommend this as one of the best books you'll find on the practical aspects of commercializing technology. The book contains a wealth of tips, models and business strategies that other books on technology transfer don't cover. (Just a few of the tools presented such as the Marioni Matrix and TRIZ are well worth the price of the book.) Especially valuable are the tools and tips for evaluating potential market applications, end users, channels, revenue potential and launch tactics.
Innovator's guide to the galaxy of commercialization.......2006-05-31
Phyllis Speser's The Art and Science of Technology Transfer is a must read for innovators and managers of technology. There are several uncomfortable hurtles for entrepreneurs along the path to commercialization. This book pulls the curtain back with a style that is both educational as well as down right funny. My only regret is that I didnt have access to this book before I embarked on my effort to launch my technology.

Book Description
This book represents the first study in the literature that provides a systematic, US-wide analysis of local university-high technology connections at the lowest possible level of spatial aggregation. Its contributions are twofold: it focuses on the regional aspects of the interaction between high technology innovations, university and private R&D at the proper spatial scale, at the level of counties and metropolitan areas; and it uses the specialized methodology of spatial econometrics to explicitly deal with potential spatial effects in cross-sectional data. The study is based on a quite data set of high technology innovations and industrial R&D employment in the USA in 1982.
From an exploratory spatial data analysis implemented at the county level, it is shown that the concentration of high technology product innovations, private R&D and university research follow a similar spatial pattern across the United States. A formal regression analysis is carried out for 43 States and 125 Metropolitan Statistical Areas which implements the Griliches-Jaffe knowledge production function framework. This provides strong evidence that university research expenditures have a positive and very significant effect on aggregate high technology innovation. However, the intensity of knowledge transfers between university research and regional innovation is not constant over space. It is demonstrated that the same amount of university research expenditure yields substantially different levels of local innovation activity depending on the concentration of economic activities in the metropolitan area. The findings in this book strongly indicate that a stimulation of research activities in universities located in existing agglomerations of high technology production and research has significant positive effects on the regional economy.
This book aims to serve the interests of both academic researchers in the fields of regional science and economics of technological change, and economic developers concerned with practical problems of innovative technology regions. The text may be used in graduate-level courses of regional economics, economics of technological change, economics of education, and applied spatial econometrics.

Book Description
Comprehensive coverage of the issues, methods, and art of valuing and pricing early-stage technologies To develop or not to develop; to license or not to license; what price will be a true reflection of the product's value from both the buyer's and seller's point of view? These questions are crucial to companies dependent on intellectual propertyparticularly technology companies, universities, and biotech companies. The risks associated with early-stage technology are high, and decisions must often be made years before any potential product will reach the market. In Early-Stage Technologies: Valuation and Pricing, Richard Razgaitis presents TR-R-A-DE, a comprehensive approach to determining the future of new technologies based on technology rights, risk assignment, the art of deal-making, and deal economics. He considers the key components involved in a licensing transaction, offers a detailed presentation of six valuation methods for intellectual property, examines risk in both quantitative and qualitative terms, and explores the negotiation strategy and structuring of agreements that are the keys to the art of technology rights deal-making. Early-Stage Technologies is an indispensable tool for anyone involved in the development, valuation, and licensing of intellectual property, the most valuable resource and driving force of the information age.
Customer Reviews:
Jewel in the Crown of Technology Valuation Reference Books.......2002-05-25
Of all the technology valuation reference books I have read, this one is by far the best. Richard has compiled and condensed the most useful valuation techniques/methods into his book, and it's easy reading. However, if you're just looking for one tried and true, quick and dirty recipe to value all technologies in all markets and in all business conditions you'll be disappointed. Richard has provided an excellent collection of methods, however unlike many authors, he writes for the business professional and thus he requires the reader to use professional judgment, coupled with good business intelligence (information) to select and then apply the methodologies. Basically, there are rarely easy and simple answers when valuating technologies, however Richard's book makes it a heck of a lot easier and the results provide a more credible foundation for commencing valuation negotiations.
Engaging Book for a Technical Subject.......2000-12-13
I enjoyed reading Dr. Razgaitis book on the Early -Stage Technologies. It covered the different basic approaches to valuation. I specifically liked his analysis of the 25% rule and the Monte Carlo method for valuations. These two methods are on opposite ends of the difficulty spectrum of valuations. The details mentioned in those two methods has allowed me to strengthen the valuation reports that we do at Inavisis, Inc.
I also liked Chapter five which covers the Rating/ranking method to determine valuation. Although the chapter was general in nature, it outlined the basic principles that appraisal professional use in their valuation report and in litigation environment to support their analysis.
I use the stories outlined in the book in many of my valuation training courses. Dr. Razgaitis book is a must for the libraries of appraisal professional.

Book Description
Is knowledge an economic good? Which are the characteristics of the institutions regulating the production and diffusion of knowledge? Cumulation of knowledge is a key determinant of economic growth, but only recently knowledge has moved to the core of economic analysis. Recent literature also gives profound insights into events like scientific progress, artistic and craft development which have been rarely addressed as socio-economic institutions, being the domain of sociologists and historians rather than economists. This volume adopts a multidisciplinary approach to bring knowledge in the focus of attention, as a key economic issue.

Heightened danger or just hype?.......2000-07-31
The book covers the intense competition between McDonnell Douglas and General Dynamics to be the prime support company to Japan for their FSX program.
The book is easy to read. It presents an interesting overview of many of the issues impacting releasability of high technology and American competiveness, and the U.S. Government's participation in sensitive areas of international business. For someone with zero exposure to this arena, the book is a good place to start. Keep in mind that the book is written with an agenda in mind and has a very pessimistic view of this process. If you are pro-American/anti-hi tech export, you will love the book. Otherwise, keep a bag of salt near by during your read.
Of course, the so far unwritten sequal is how miserably the FSX program has performed. Did Japan pick the wrong supplier? Were the 'keys' unable to unlock the box? Or was the box Pandora's?

The Organization and Architecture of Innovation: Managing the Flow of Technology
ASIN: 0262510278 |
Book Description
The original edition of this book summarized more than a decade of work on communications flow in science and engineering organizations, showing how human and organizational systems could be restructured to bring about improved productivity and better person-to-person contact. While many studies have been done since then, few of them invalidate the general conclusions and recommendations Allen offers. In a new preface he points out - new developments, noting areas that need some modification, elaboration, or extension, and directing readers to the appropriate journal articles where the findings, are reported.
The first three chapters provide an overview of the communication system in technology, present the author's research methods, and describe differences in the career paths and goals of engineers and scientists that cause special problems for organizations. The book then discusses how technological information is acquired by the R & D organization, shows how critical technical communication within the laboratory is for R & D performance, and originates the idea of the "gatekeeper," the person who links his or her organization to the world at large. Concluding chapters take up the influence of formal and informal organization and of architecture and office layouts on communication. Many of these ideas have been successfully incorporated by architects and managers in the design of new R & D facilities and complexes.
Thomas J. Allen is Professor of Organizational Psychology and Management at MIT's Sloan School of Management.

Pioneering work.......2007-06-20
I've read this book cover to cover at least 3 times and consider it to be one of the 2 or 3 most influential books in my personal experience. Thomas Allen's groundbreaking work on the genesis of ideas, the patterns of effective communication and collaboration, and the influence of spatial orientation on success and productivity of research environments is just extraordinary. Every manager of a multidisciplinary reseach organization, particularly in the private sector, should devour this book.
A must for all investigators of engineering profession.......2001-02-27
Mr. Allen gives us a condensed collection of empirical facts about how engineers talk to each other. This is an amazing book and gave me new insights while I was working on a thesis. I give the book 4 stars not because of its scientific contents but because of its writing style. Even though this is a book targeted at researchers, it could have been written in a more entertaining form!
