Customer Reviews:
If you haven't read this book yet, I suggest that you do ASAP.......2007-10-24
The day when you truly understand 80% of the contents of this book is the moment of milestone of your trading career. As you progress in your trading career, check back with this book to determine how much you have learn. This book is the pivotal standard of all technical traders.
Reference.......2007-08-13
If you use the charts to look for trades, you have to buy this book. It's an awesome reference for charting.
Good Even for a Random Walker.......2007-07-22
This book is a very well written introduction to the Technical Analysis of the financial markets. It covers a lot of ground and for a text book style layout, it is surprisingly easy to read. Murphy starts with a solid introduction including the philosophy of technical analysis and a defense against the criticisms from academics and followers of the Random Walk Theory. The meat of the book is a comprehensive treatment of the core components of technical analysis including Trendlines, Reversal and Continuation Patterns, Moving Averages, and Oscillators. The author continues to dig deeper with Point & Figure Charts, Japanese Candlesticks, and Eliott Wave Theory.
As a big fan of Malkiel's "Random Walk Down Wall Street," I started reading this book with some healthy skepticism. While I was not converted to the chartist's philosophy, I felt like I did pick up some tools that could still be useful in a buy-and-hold strategy.
Everything a beginner needs to know.......2007-07-07
John Murphy's book explains nearly everything anyone who is looking to understand the technical side of the market could ask for.
PROS: Easy to follow. Starts from the ground up into the complicated stuff. Feels like a year's worth of college courses finished in a few weeks time. This is far and away the best overall stock book I've read to date. I'm making money now!
CONS: Spends a bit too much time on futures trading (for which the book was originally written) Doesn't get far enough into how much time should lapse as a pattern unfolds. Doesn't get much into the psychology of the trader's mind. Somewhat outdated on computer advances (not a big deal)
Classic Technical Analysis Book.......2007-06-28
I received 4 copies of this book during my course work at the NYIF, its an excellent referance manual for anyone applying Technical Analysis to the financial markets.
Customer Reviews:
Get the book but not the study guide........2006-06-26
Let me just start by saying that the book Technical Analysis of the Financial Markets by John Murphy is an excellent book; truely a classic which I highly reccomend. However, I found the study guide to be a waste of my time. It is filled with a bunch of quizes which are vaguely worded and won't do you much if any good. I guess they can help you to see how well you comprehended the chapters, but it has no supplemental information or sumaries on important material. It's just a bunch of multiple choice and matching. There was no further understanding of the material in my experience. Save your money, just buy the textbook, not the studyguide.
This is a stupid book about a non-sense theory.......2004-07-17
This is a stupid and non-critical book about a non-sense theory. Since the theory is able to predict everything it is completely meaningless!
For example: When the price approaches a support- or resistance- line, it will either bounce back, or, -believe it or not- break through the line. The theory does not even tell which event is most likely!
The java-scripts on my web page
( www.ragnarius.com/en/hokus/index.shtml ) demonstrates that everything the book says about the stock market also applies to random-walks.
Waste of time.......2003-11-22
John Murphy is a market technician with well deserved notoriety. The textbook, Technical Analysis of Financial Markets is excellent, the workbook is garbage. Poor questions, unclear statements and vaguely annotated charts muddle the text. The textbook covers 19 plus chapters, the workbook only goes to chapter 12. Disappointing.
Helpful but the questions may be too simple.......2001-07-23
This book is helpful for the readers who read John Murphy's classic. But I feel the questions may be too simple. If you read the text then you can answer most of them. They are not very challanging.
An invaluable self-study manual in Technical Analysis.......2000-08-12
This self-study manual with "Technical Analysis of the Financial Markets" is the best way to starting studying the technical analysis. This is, without doubt, the Bible!
It's easy-to-follow, step-by-step method leads you through each of the book's chapters and provides objectives that give your reading focus.

Excellent addition to the library.......2007-10-16
An excellent book for the beginning trader because it does away with the misleading ideas about the marketplace that most beginning traders fall victim to. I wish I had read this book prior to my first trades because if I had, I probably wouldn't have gone through all the "fundamentals" nonsense and other hype that doesn't mean squat in terms of making money.
A good book to accompany Darvas first book.
Written by the greatest stock trader of all time.......2007-09-09
I spent $150 on this book with no regrets. After reading over 70 books on stock trading and studying the greatest stock traders of all timen in my opinion Nicolas Darvas is the greatest stock trader who ever lived. No one that I am aware of ever made so much money in such a short amount of time with such a small starting point. Darvas started with a few $2,000 in stock, his 1st stock quadrupled in a few months. With in a few years of trial and error he had turned $8,000 into $100,000 then finished out his final 18 months turning that into $2.4 million dollars. He then removed his money from the market due to no stocks meeting his criteria and avoided the bear market of the early 60's. On his journey he never lost any of his own money, only losing previous winnings.
I love this book and his previous one because he gives specifics, with dates and amounts of stocks he purchased and when he sold. His books are text books for stock traders. In this book he discusses how brokers and tip services make money off each generation of suckers in Wall Street and how to keep from being ripped off. I agree with his point that if your broker or the tip service were so great they would be following their own advice and making a killing in the market instead of working and selling you services and information for a few dollars. It is very important to be very careful in the Wall Street casino and not getted ripped off.
This book goes into much more detail than his other book and explains exactly how to use his techno-fundamentalist system.
His method of stock investment:
TECHNICAL-
Only buy stocks that have established solid price boxes and have moved through them consistently.
Buy stocks that move into higher boxes on increased volume.
Only buy stocks breaking into all time new highs after coming out of a previous solid price box.
Set on stop buy orders to enable you to buy the stock as it breaks out of the box into the next one. This is where the big moves happen.
FUNDAMENTAL-
Trade stocks based on there capitalation. This will determine proper volume and price movement due to number of outstanding shares.
Buy stocks in strong industry groups.
Buy stocks that have the greatest expectations of future earnings.
Even though this book has not been recommended by Willim O'Neal it is an excellent companion book for followers of the CAN SLIM method of stock trading. Darvas encourages us to bet on the fastest horse with the best record not to worry so much about the kind of hay it eats or spectators opinions. I have made $1,000's of dollars using these methods and you will to. This book is a jewel in the ocean of stock trading books.
Read How I Made 2 MIllion First.......2004-11-06
This book is no way near as good as the first. It is mostly the same material told in a less engaging way. He uses the metaphor of Wall Street as Roulette Game in a Casino which cheats it's clients. If you like Darvas's first book it is certainly worth reading to gain little insights on his method which youdon't get in the first. There a few new anecdotes and a chapter which explains his method but on the whole the book is not as amusing a read and lacks the freshness of the first, nor do I think it takes his story much farther than where the last ends. I would love to know what happened to Darvas in the late sixties and early seventies but not in this book.
a great continuation from 2,000,000.......2004-08-28
This book continues from where How I Made 2,000,000 left off. Nicolas refreshes the reader on his sound methods with his box theory and stop-loss. What i liked alot about this is book is how he actually draws in a great comparison on how Wall Street is much like Las Vegas! (Go figure)... Darvas gives us the realities to investing; its gambling! But dont worry, you can learn to clean the house in no time with the help of this book. Accept the facts, trust your instinct and gamble with confidence baby! But other then the gambling aspect, Nicolas repeats himself frequently throughout the book, which is the only downside. I would definetely recommend this book to anyone interested in what Wall Street really is!
A bona fide Wall Street classic!.......2004-06-15
Nicolas Darvas was both an excellent trader and writer. This book presents a clear exposition of his successful, break-out trading method. It shows how he was able to ride the winners by using his nested "box" system. Further, it shows how he used "techno-fundamental" screening to select only those issues which had the best chance for sustained rally after the break-out event. Event-trading is useful because it is real-time, gives definite signals, and affords minimal lag in response time. This book should prove to be of great utility to someone who wants to learn to trade or to improve his or her trading skills.
Book Description
An indispensible resource for today's independent investorsMore Americans than ever are directing their own investments, and thousands of "experts" promise information on the best stocks and bonds to buy. To be successful in the markets, investors need to dig out of the information overload and the unintelligible lingo. Using examples to help simplify complex financial issues and written in lively, understandable language, Gretchen Morgenson and Campbell R. Harvey explain and cross-reference more than 3,500 investing terms, from the rules surrounding abandonment options to when you should expect to pay interest on zero-coupon bonds. They define the risks and rewards that accompany various investments and help you find meaningful information on a company's or fund's financial statements. Among the terms they decode: the markets, the indexes, and how they work, including the NYSE, Nasdaq, Dow Jones Industrial Average, Russell 2000, Samp;P 500, and Wilshire 5000 discounted investment opportunities, such as employee stock purchase plans and DRIPs tools for estimating company earnings, P/E ratios, quarterly EPS and GPS momentum, and analyst target pricesThis is the essential A-to-Z reference for understanding the jargon, the nonsense, and the language of investing.

a really well put together book of the palyers on wall street that can be updated every year discussing the major players at each firm
Quite comprehensive and well-written book.......1998-10-12
This is one of the best books I have ever read about the Wall Street environment. The book thoroughly discusses all major players on the market. Also, it gives a realistic review of the government institutions that regulate the market activities. It is a must read for anybody interested in broadening one's knowledge about the world of finance/investemts.

D'Javoodoo.......2001-12-13
This is an exact reprint of his earlier book, do not waste your time or money. (...). There are many other books more worthwile of your time and money than this one.
Great book for the novice and seasoned student of finance!.......2000-04-08
As a student of Dr. Parks at Pace University, Lubin School of Business, this book has changed the way I view and analyze various financial topics. This books covers many current, complex, controversial and critical issues and examines the reasons and theories behind them as well as disproving many commonly held beliefs. Topics include: 1.The Gold Standard. 2. Passing an Amendment to have a balanced budget every year. (Why we don't need it!) 3. The fallacy with regards to the "Double Tax" on Corporate Shareholders and the "Double Tax Shield". 4. Reasons behind our nine post WWII recessions. 5. Linking Monetary policy with Fiscal Policy and its importance. 6.Discussing Supply side economics. 7. Explaining the MM Dividend Irrelevancy Theorm,(Why investing in a company that pays dividends or re-invests earnings will eventually result in equal gains.) 8.In-depth examination of our (US) economic history and the reasons why we've had booms and busts. etc.. This book covers a wide array of financial topics and explains difficult concepts in an easy to understand manner. Dr. Parks also examines the "herd" mentality on Wall Street and exposes the "parrots" and "hucksters" that work on the street. Essential reading for students of finance and anybody interested in broadening their financial knowledge.
Second edition of an entertaining and informative book.......1998-09-11
This book appeared first in 1996 under the title "Witch Doctor of Wall Street" and it turns out to be exactly the same book with an "epilogue" added yet neither the book nor the advertising suggest this. The book forms the basis of Professor Parks' course in Capital Markets and Investment at Pace University. The tone of the book is critical and curmudgeonly yet some interesting points are made and it makes a useful accompaniment to the standard finance text book (Sharpe, Brealy & Meyers, etc.). The first edition was full of misprints and errors which, I hope, have been corrected in this second edition.
Terrible. This book is an exact reprint of Witch Doctor........1998-09-04
If you already own Witch Doctor on Wall Street, don't waste your time with this new one. It is an exact copy of "The Witch Doctor On Wall Street". Not a refrasing, mind you, but an exact duplicate. What a fraud. The only thing different are some updated graphs; a few extra footnotes; a short prologue, which is just a summary of the chapters; and the Epilogue. This constitutes about 20 pages of new material. Prometheus Books and Dr. Parks should be ashamed to call this a new book.

excellent non-mathematical primer.......2003-09-21
I work in the securities industry, and this book accurately described the markets and products without the detailed mathematics. I would recommend this book as a first reading before the Hull and White book which is much more mathematical.
Too bad it's out of print. I'd like everyone in my group to have a copy.
perfect for practical use.......2000-08-17
I consider the book a perfect guide written by a professional for professionals. If you are looking for scientific completeness and complication, go somewhere else. If you are looking for a competent down-to-earth reference, this is your book. I wonder when the third edition of this valuable tool will be published.
