"One way to get started in technical analysis is to read a good book on the subject. One of my favorites is Technical Analysis of the Financial Markets: A Comprehensive Guide to Trading Methods and Applications by John J. Murphy. It's an easy read." Ralph J. Acampora, CMT, Managing Director, Prudential Securities Inc.
Customer Reviews:
If you haven't read this book yet, I suggest that you do ASAP.......2007-10-24
The day when you truly understand 80% of the contents of this book is the moment of milestone of your trading career. As you progress in your trading career, check back with this book to determine how much you have learn. This book is the pivotal standard of all technical traders.
Reference.......2007-08-13
If you use the charts to look for trades, you have to buy this book. It's an awesome reference for charting.
Good Even for a Random Walker.......2007-07-22
This book is a very well written introduction to the Technical Analysis of the financial markets. It covers a lot of ground and for a text book style layout, it is surprisingly easy to read. Murphy starts with a solid introduction including the philosophy of technical analysis and a defense against the criticisms from academics and followers of the Random Walk Theory. The meat of the book is a comprehensive treatment of the core components of technical analysis including Trendlines, Reversal and Continuation Patterns, Moving Averages, and Oscillators. The author continues to dig deeper with Point & Figure Charts, Japanese Candlesticks, and Eliott Wave Theory.
As a big fan of Malkiel's "Random Walk Down Wall Street," I started reading this book with some healthy skepticism. While I was not converted to the chartist's philosophy, I felt like I did pick up some tools that could still be useful in a buy-and-hold strategy.
Everything a beginner needs to know.......2007-07-07
John Murphy's book explains nearly everything anyone who is looking to understand the technical side of the market could ask for.
PROS: Easy to follow. Starts from the ground up into the complicated stuff. Feels like a year's worth of college courses finished in a few weeks time. This is far and away the best overall stock book I've read to date. I'm making money now!
CONS: Spends a bit too much time on futures trading (for which the book was originally written) Doesn't get far enough into how much time should lapse as a pattern unfolds. Doesn't get much into the psychology of the trader's mind. Somewhat outdated on computer advances (not a big deal)
Classic Technical Analysis Book.......2007-06-28
I received 4 copies of this book during my course work at the NYIF, its an excellent referance manual for anyone applying Technical Analysis to the financial markets.
Book Description
This great "how to" book covers the various mechanics of natural gas trading, including the physical (cash) market for natural gas production, transportation, distribution, and consumption. The heart of the text is the definition and demonstration of financial trading tools and techniques. It closes with discussion of more complex structures of trading and the author's philosophy on how a risk management department should function within a natural gas trading company.
Customer Reviews:
Principles.......2007-05-29
The principles of gas trading laid out clearly and concisely. Perfect for my needs.
A Great Book to Learn Natural Gas Trading.......2006-08-04
Even if you do not have a solid understanding of derivatives, this book is really good explaining step by step how the different derivatives are used for hedging natural gas; regardless if you are the producer, trader, or end user. The author gives many examples of how each derivative works. I highly recommend this book if you are starting out as a junior trader, risk products trader, supply planner, etc.
educational sources for practical trading purposes.......2005-07-16
I have not seen any book that describes its domain with such generous detail and is geared for real life trading. The contents may not be enough for those who trade only financial energy instruments, but it is indeed a good course material for the market makers, and hedgers, namely end users and producers. I highly recommend this book to those who are involved in natural gas industry.
Excellent Resource for Natural Gas Traders.......1998-12-05
Was very pleased with the material contained in this book. Although I am a beginner in the natural gas trading field, I found Sturm's book both easy to understand yet challenging in its scope. A great deal of emphasis is placed upon various hedging techniques and many helpful diagrams are included to portray the trading flow. Overall a very unique and insightful book for beginners and for those with years of experience in trading natural gas.

Customer Reviews:
a balanced introduction.......2007-07-30
If trading is about markets, psychology, technique, then this book is an excellent introduction to these areas. Beeing balanced and only 250 pages, the book does not cover the areas in much depth. This might be a positive or a negative according to what one wants. 5 stars because the book is easy to read and gives an excellent big picture view on trading.
Great Book with a lot pf tips .......2007-05-07
this book is ideal for beginners and pro's that need some directions on how to make things the right way, i must say i enjoyed the small stories in between , overall whoever is looking to begin trading futures it is a must
Excellent Place to Start Your Commodites Trading Education.......2007-05-05
George Kleinman does a fantastic job of explaining the Commodities and Futures markets. Further, he does a great job helping a new trader get some 'legs' to stand on. He provides valuable insight into developing a trading methodology, and helps the beginning trader 'find his way' in the plethora of trading solutions out there. He demystifies how trading is done, and provides solid "Western" and "Conventional" trading practices so that the beginning trader has an excellent foundation to expand their knowledge. I would say that George's suggestions and lessons in the book are the basis for my knowledge (book smarts at this point) and provided the grounding necessary for expanding my knowledge base into Fibonnaci, WD Gann, Candlesticks, and so much more. Basically, it is my opinion that every beginning trader (not stocks but Commodities and Futures) should read this book. He does an excellent job explaining how trades, stops, support, resistance, MACD, Stochastics, Trend Lines, many other various methodologies can aid a trader into making good trades. I highly recommend this book.
Reference book.......2006-07-29
This is a book esp. for begineers. You can find every detail about futures & options. The stories and examples makes the book even much valuable.
Chapter 12 (Traders Psychology), Chapter 13 (Trading Secrets) and Chapter 14 (Jesse's Secret) are good to read even for experienced traders.
The worst part of the book is technical tool TMVTT.
It's a book that you can use as reference anytime. Good to have one.
WRITTEN BY A SUCCESSFUL TRADER.......2006-03-11
If you are interested to start learning about trading Futures, this book is a good reading. Basic to medium level information, well presented.
Book Description
With the low cost of modern computer hardware and software combined with the communication of price data via satellite, a new and rapidly expanding market of traders using computers has developed. This essential book bridges the gap between the basic instruction that comes with software programs and what a trader actually needs to know to develop and text profitable futures trading system. With specific information on how to set up and use computer-generated technical studies of the most popular indicators, the book includes: How to build a trading system tailored to the reader's specific need; Practical instruction on how to display and analyze technical information; Advice for developing well disciplined money management and risk control strategies; techniques for monitoring a trading system to detect if something has gone wrong before major losses occur.
Customer Reviews:
A must read for Trading System Developers.......2005-08-31
This book is a must read for Trading System Developers. The concepts can be applied to many markets. The section on testing alone is worth the price of the book.
www.iExpertAdvisor.com
Excellent Book.......2002-07-19
This book gets a 4 stars rating because of its expensive price (the book is only 220 pages and full of empty spaces). But, price is always subjective. You may treat it as the cost of your education.
Anyway, what makes this book so very valuable is the fact that it is easy to read, clear, definitive, and yes it has so many valuable information on what parameters to use for each indicator. How many of you left confused on what parameters should be used? This book will definitely clear away the clouds in your mind.
LeBeau has done extensive research on indicators such as ADX and his insights on other popular indicators are extremely valuable.
The title may be slightly misleading because bulk of the contents is explaining each technical indicator (120 pages), while only 45 pages on explaining how to build a trading system. Yet, it is clear and concise.
The final Chapter is also valuable. It deals with 12 Day Trading systems that the author has selectively chosen out of all day trading ideas he has or has received from other great traders.
Many concrete tips.......2001-08-25
I only discoverd this pretty old book recently. I am suprised to find there are quite a lot of trading tips. What make this book stands out of the crowd is the tips were very concrete and practical. The discussions about exit and stop loss are parcticular good. Many other books just said cut the loses quick. How quick? When? This book gives you some hints. The authors also give some tricks in using indicators which I hope I could know earlier.
You should buy this........1999-09-10
I know Charles Lebeau. He does occasional system seminars with my father Dr. Van K. Tharp one of the "Market Wizards" and author of Trade Your Way to Financial Freedom. Charles Lebeau is a great trader. When anyone ask me about a technical indicators book this is the one. Charles is very through. He noticed the best traders in the industry are usually right 30% to 40% of the time. They just cut their losses short and have these huge winners. Charles tested most of the major indicators against random entry i.e. (Flipping a coin) most of them don't do any better. Your exits, psychology, and money management determine if you are making money or not. Don't pay too much attention to your entry. This book explains his results and how to use each indicator. Almost any indicator will work with proper money management. I done well even with flipping a coin and the right stop. The indicator best for you is one you feel comfortable with and will stick with. BUY THIS BOOK and hopefully what I wrote may make some sence to you.
Decent Info on TA.......1999-08-21
This book is nothing special. I really disagree with the author's interpretation of the ADX indicator. Absolute level is far more important than slope. The day trading systems shown will lead you to the poor house in no time. Presents some novel ideas though.
Book Description
Focusing on price-forecasting in the commodity futures market, this is the most comprehensive examination of fundamental and technical analysis available. Treats both approaches in depth, with forecasting examined in conjunction with practical trading considerations.
Customer Reviews:
A "must-read" for any investor.......2007-10-02
Schwagers book is captivating and informative. The discussion on regression provides useful insight for people interested in fundamental and technical analysis but may offend random walkers. Overall the book will enhance any readers understanding of the stockmarkets.
Classic, encyclopedic in scope........2004-07-02
Schwager is the starting point for any serious reading on futures and options trading. Disregard comments below on its being to quantitative. No, you don't need a Ph.D. in math nor high school calculus (there isn't a single integral or differential equation in the whole book). You should have a starting basis in statistics as well as some pre-existing intuition about markets.
It is well-written and clear, and truly encyclopedic in scope : every conceivable options trade, with all permutations thereof, is discussed and dissected, even inadvisable ones (they too are informative). A classic book whose age (mine is copyright 1984!) testifies to its enduring worth. To summarize, you can't really trade futures or options and expect to make money without it.
Futures Textbook.......2001-11-07
Schwager's textbooks while not specifically about spreads are comprehensive and complete about futures. This book has a small section about trading commodity futures spreads.
A good reference for traders who like Math/Stat.......2001-08-07
This book could be renamed as "The Mathematics of Trading". The traget readers are traders who use lots of Mathematics and Statistics.
The experience of Schwager helped me a lot. He said he was good in analysis but not trading. Many people, including me, thought Mathematics, Statistics and Economics were essential for good trading. So they went to college, studied hard, got a degree and hope they could make money in the market. This simply never happen! Otherwise everyone should got a PhD before trading. You still need to develop a method or system. But what is vital is to control your ego. Admit mistakes quickly. This was the most interesting and useful conclusion that I got from Schwager.
Schwager covers a whole lot of material.......1999-12-10
Very comprehensive book. Much if it is difficult to understand. Excellent writing, the clearest in the business, but author gets into some complex info. I feel he is not always fair in giving credit to other authors.
One side issue, a book this costly and technical should have a durable binding. Mine fell apart the first time I opened it. It's glued together like a paperback novel.
All in all it's the most complete single source I have seen in the commodities trading field, even includes chapters on economic theory. It's worth the price. Info on fallacies in fundamental analysis (reading the news) is unique and helpful. Also lots of very wise trading tips
Customer Reviews:
Classic!.......2005-12-15
John Murphy's book is a modern day classic on the topic of technical analysis. His writing is precise and easy to understand- novice traders will especially appreciate this. Regardless of the title, the principles and techniques described in this book are applicable to not only the futures market, but to all markets, including stocks and forex. Highly recommended to all traders!
ask a question.......2005-08-05
I'm very happy finding so much reveiw about this book. now ,
future marketing
ng is growing fastly in my country .But here, so little book introduct about it.
can i buy this book, through Amazon?
Now ,i am in china!
Text Book style - very effective analysis.......2000-10-18
Murphy has taken a very technical analysis of a "dry" subject and turned it into a readable, useful guide that should by read (and referred to often) by everyone who dares trade in the futures markets. It's a great first book on the subject, and a great book for experts alike.
A Clear and Essential Guide.......2000-08-15
Murphy has collected, collated, condensed and presented just about every method of technically analysing the futures markets. His text, whether dissecting simple or abstruse concepts, is remarkably lucid. Comprehensive and comprehensible, this is a reference futures traders must own. All I would have asked for in addition would be more suggestions for implementing trading strategies, but that, in fact, might require another book. If Murphy were to write it, he might outsell all those fake futures promoters and their $195 "courses" combined.
Excellent Primer!.......1999-12-13
This should be on every techie's bookshelf! Much better than the info in those $195 "get rich quick" mailings, for a lot less. If you are interested in learning technical basics, at a bargain price, this is the place to start. You will find yourself reviewing it over and over.
Book Description
This newest edition explores all aspects of the futures markets from ``What you need to know'' to ``What you must do to win.'' Learn how to build a trading plan, charting techniques, contrary opinion trading, hedging and Gann methods and the proprietary LSS Day Trading system 3 day cycle methods.
Customer Reviews:
An eye-opener.......2007-04-30
Futures are complex! This book makes it easy to understand some of the tricks of the trade in futures. I highly recommend this book to all futures and forex traders.
Chock Full of Useful Info!.......2005-11-16
I bought this book as a refresher to the comodities market,
after a decade chasing profits in the slower NASDAQ market.
Mr. Angell presents not only the basic info necessary to
understand the commodities market, but also more presents
his LSS daytrading system (which I won't use).
Each and every chapter ends with a list of the points one
should take from that particular chapter. My book has 15
pages bookmarked where information important to me is stored.
One can find more in-depth books on technical analysis,
options, and other topics in this book. But, Mr. Angell gives
the reader an excellent base upon which to build a comprehensive
trading education. From types of orders, technical analysis,
psychology, options and even a trading system, Mr. Angell
succeeds in introducing the novice trader into the world of
futures/commodities trading.
I read one of Mr. Angell's other books on "Sure-thing Options
Trading", early in my trading education, and I still use the
info. I can say the same of this book, after only a year.
This book is certainly worth the price.
Don't loose your time reading this book.......2003-10-30
Where work the trading system explained in this book???
Don't loose your money and time reading this book
Insight Galore!.......2003-03-04
George Angell constantly produces hits when it comes to futures investing. From his proprietary LSS system to his down to earth attitude he has my complete professional courtesy.
His book opens the eyes of the average investor and let's it be known that futures are not one dimensional. You have multiple strategies and tools at your disposal to help you succeed. One of those tools is hedging. ... This is a must have book for the novice futures trader.
THE BEST PLACE FOR BEGINNERS TO START.......2000-07-08
I am in definite agreement that this book is about the best place for any newcomer to the commodities market. It states just what you need to do, how to organize a trading plan and much more. The end of chapter summary in point form is very helpful as a sort of quick reference.
As a Gann trader, I am pleased with the entire chapter that has been written about W.D. Gann method of trading, which is available in a very simple to understand format.
At the beginning of my career, I did a beginners "course" for about $200. I must admit that I had learnt much more in this book than that so called $200. money-making-machine course. Congratulations to the author and best wishes to the readers!
Book Description
Pricing Money provides a highly practical introduction to the principles of bonds and fixed income and is aimed at readers who have little prior knowledge.
The book is written in a style that is not overly mathematical or theoretical but takes a practical approach focusing on the aspects of pricing and trading fixed-income securities that are most relevant to the day-to-day activities of people working in the markets.
Starting at a basic level the author explains the concepts and principles behind fixed income in an informative way using every day examples that can be understood by the layman. It includes a listing of the terms used; the rules and conventions; the techniques for valuation and pricing and a description of the different roles within the industry. This book will be an excellent training tool for new recruits to the financial markets.
Customer Reviews:
A readable and thorough introduction to fixed income markets.......2001-12-23
Extremely readable. One could read this book in a single sitting and get a great jumpstart to an understanding of fixed income markets - the why and the how.
Wiseman has an engaging style of writing which prevents the stifled yawns normally associated with reading this genre, and keeps one turning the pages...
The book nicely covers the fundamental theory of why there exists a fixed income market, then turns to the players and discusses what they do, and finally covers some of the fundamental trading strategies and math employed to turn a buck.
Nice one...
i could not put this book down.......2001-12-10
i found this book very well written. It provides detail and yet covers that what it says it does. I find that Wiseman explains concepts in a verystraight forward way. Although i had to pause to eat and think about some of the financial products discussed such as "par yields". I found I was able to understand the book. The book contains some of the trader jargon and a outline of the players involved in the market. I think that anyone who wants to something with securities or trading should read this, before/during/after an intership. As the english say "Wiseman" is the dogs ballocks!! get this book!

Book Description
Analyzing & Forecasting Future Prices is and advanced and highly practical guide to the latest methods of analyzing and predicting futures prices and applying them to hedging and speculation. Requires minimal mathematics.
Customer Reviews:
Forceasting Futures prices.......2003-01-07
The Book has detailed explanations and examples of futures trading techniques and a lot technical analysis. One of the few forecasting books that is not lost in mathematics . The spread sheet examples purred like a kitten in excel. This in turn can be used to judge the significance of cycles or trends. The spread sheet are a great help to sort and mange data to see what you are really looking at. Easy to follow real world examples. It's the kind of book you wish for in MBA classes but never seem to see
Just another system.......2002-01-04
The author does a fine job of presenting his system, however, he forgets to explain how he goes about his analysis. A comprehensive book would inform the reader how the author conducts analysis. Besides, one would expect for the price of the publication, a print date of Jan 2001 may offer an updated version of the original print: no luck. Much of the print dedicated to computer application uses old Lotus language - it is clear this edition could care less about users in Jan 2001 - it also seems to pass over the 90s as well. In all, it seems the author presents his notes on a system of looking for cycles, but the path is not clear and the guide not up to date. I am a commodity hedger and I find little use with book.
