This is a great book for anyone that has an interest in the environment. The practical tips also help individuals save money while making a positive impact.

5 out of 5 stars Save Money, Make an Impact, Share it With Others.......2006-01-20

This is an amazing book. I didn't think I had a lot to learn about saving energy. The Authors do a great job describing just about all one needs to know in order to save money...and the planet and its resources while preventing climate change.

It was a very well-researched book. On some of the calculations, they state assumptions. Some are left on faith. This is OK. There were a few subtle details that may have been a bit overstated, however their estimates on how much can be saved are not exaggerations. If anything, they are conservative, especially given the cost of gas, heating and electricity...If only water were more expensive...alas!

This book inspired a Weatherstripping party at my apartment complex and has helped me have even more footholds into discussions about conservation and how much difference it can make.

    Thanks to the Authors. Wonderful!!!

5 out of 5 stars Exceptionally practical and a very interesting read.......2004-11-19

First, this book is very easy to read. Each tip is only a few pages long, so it is easy to read in small pieces or out-of-order. The information it presents is very practical, listing a wide array of energy-saving tips ranging from the more obvious (changing light bulbs and using programmable thermostats) to a good selection of not-so-obvious (getting off of junk mail lists, making green investments, identifying appliances which burn a lot of electricity even when they are turned off, cleaning your refrigerator coils, using carbon offsets, and many more). Overall, I was very impressed with the breadth of ideas represented here, which encompassed much more than I expected or could have ever thought of on my own.

Each tip provides interesting background as well as hard numbers so you can gauge the impact and determine if the tip makes sense for you.

Having read this book and implemented a number of the key tips, I have learned a lot and also cut my monthly electric bill roughly in half. I would strongly recommend this for anybody who is interested in saving money or sustainable living. And for around $10, given all the money you'll save, you can afford to give copies to your family and friends.

5 out of 5 stars Where has this book BEEN all my life?.......2004-10-18

This is a MUST READ for anyone wanting to understand their personal contribution to Global Warming and what they can do about it!

This book tackles a daunting, huge problem in a VERY encouraging way. It provides tools anyone can use to reduce their personal contribution to this problem and that of their community and their nation. Let's hope many schools add this book to their curriculum!

    Book Description

Global warming has become the most important issue for the future of our planet, dominating news headlines and policy discussions. Stop Global Warming turns headlines into action, providing testimony of leading environmental activist Laurie David's own passionate work and showing how and why others (particularly young people) should get involved in this and other environmental issues. In accessible and inspiring prose, David explains that Global warming is not an opinion but a scientific reality, one that policy makers by and large have failed to address. Interspersed throughout the text, short statements by celebrities such as John Mayer and Jack Johnson, along with average Americans, will reinforce why halting global warming is so important to our future. An important book that will cause you to think more about our planet and change your habits, Stop Global Warming is required reading for the 21st century.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting Read.......2007-03-22

I recieved a signed copy of the book from Laurie David herself and I was instantly hooked from the forward onwards. While most of what she suggests we do to stop global warming is common sense, it's very interesting nonetheless. She clearly shows much passion for this cause and I d as well.

    1 out of 5 stars too basic.......2007-03-19

I had been hoping for some more creative ideas. The book was fairly preachy about the need to combat global warming but since I was already concerned enough to buy the book I didn't need to be further convinced. Plus, the solutions the book proposed were so basic that unless energy conservation was a totally new concept to the reader there was nothing new. I was very disapointed and if it wasn't for the energy I would use in sending the book back I wouldn't have kept it.

    1 out of 5 stars Totally misleading.......2007-02-15

Well, first of all, with China and India the two biggest nations, and the two fastest developing nations, who are both exempt from any Kyoto protocols, building coal power generation plants and buying oil as fast as they can, one thing is completely certain:

All of us in the developed nations can reduce our CO2 emmissions to ZERO without having the slightest effect on the current rate of increase in Greenhouse gasses.

But why do we take it on faith that we would even want too?

The paleoclimatological evidence points out two very significant periods in history since the end of the last Ice Age where the earth was very warm. In each case it was a wetter world. When the first of those periods ended, the Saharan lakes dried up, the flourishing civilization there was scattered, and the Sahara desert was born. In the most recent cooling, the most advanced civilization in North America, the Anasazi, was also destroyed. That cooling period, which we know as the Little Ice Age, may have also wiped out the Mayans, but certainly destroyed the Viking colonies in Greenland when they could no longer grow crops there, and caused the many scattered lakes that dotted the Arabian Penninsula to dry up.

There a few scattered exceptions, but the overall evidence is that these were global effects that made for wetter conditions and were of vast benefit to man.

So is there any evidence that the current warming trends might be making the same alterations to the rainfall in drought stricken areas? Indeed yes. Type in Sahel and rainfall in any search engine to see what is beginning to happen (the Sahel is sub Saharan Africa, where the photos of emaciated babies come from). It's starting to RAIN!

So before you try to save the beaches at Malibu and Martha's Vinyard, think of the poor people in Darfur, and how great it would be if this respite from decades of horrible drought wasn't "fixed" before it really got going.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Inspiration as to What EACH of Us Can Do!.......2007-01-20

I picked up this book at the library's NEW section...What a find! Ever since I saw Gore's movie, I've been very troubled about Global Warming...it trumps all other problems on the planet if it destroys the planet! (duh!). The other day I answered a telephone poll as to "what do you feel is the biggest problem facing the world today?" When I answered "Global Warming!" The pollster sounded surprised, like she'd never heard that as an answer before and said, "What?" Global Warming, I repeated. "I'm sorry, did you say, you think _'Global Warming'_ is the biggest problem facing the World today?" "Yes!" I said. Geez, is that so far fetched?
So obviously, despite Gore's fascinating and convincing movie...it still needs more publicity, which, thankfully Laurie David continues to provide in this gem of a book.
My daughter asked the other day, "Mom, what can we do to stop global warming?" Well, now I can quickly offer some tangible things beyond the usual...recycle, drive less, walk more, turn off the lights...because Laurie offers so much more insight as well as many more ideas. She concedes that if we do one thing thinking we're helping, like request paper(uh oh, it cuts down virgin trees)or plastics (Akk! they're made with petroleum oil), she points out alternative consequences can be just as bad on the environment-- so most of all we need to demand recycling be made easy for EVERYONE.
We need to demand leadership from politicians to look for real, long term solutions! Since she wrote the book, thank God we have a new (dem.) chair of the Senate's Environment & Public Works Committe who recognizes the reality of Global Warming. The last, Sen. Jim Inofe(R-OK) refused to accept the science, he instead "led" the Committee into waiting for more evidence! Which sounds a lot like President Bush, who is too closed minded to even watch Gore's movie.
As Laurie notes: Republicans/Democrats/Independents, we ALL need to take action or we will destroy much of the earth in as little as (she predicts to help us get off our butts) 5 more years (judging by the faster- than-expected-rate the polar ice caps are melting).
Laurie, if you're reading this review (and all other interested in finding solutions to the CO2 emmission asap) PLEASE check out a book on the Combustion Engine by Edwin Black. Laurie, I had the same SUV revelation you described when I heard him speak about his new book on CSPAN radio the other evening. But you, Laurie have the power/credibility/connections to do for him what you did for Al Gore's slide show. It could be another, even higher, high point of your career...and just might save the Earth.
I mean who has heard of Edwin Black? Obviously he does not have the name recognition or get the publicity Gore does, though he's been nominated for the Pulitzer Prize 10 times.
Anyway, Black tells FASCINATING, little known tales --going all the way back to ancient civilization--as to how we came to our oil dependency for transportation in the first place which gives so much power to middle eastern states (you may have read in Fast Food Nation how corporate greed destroyed California's clean, cheap trolley system? But did you know that the _original_ clean electric "horseless carriage" invention was discarded in favor of noisy, dirty gasoline burning engines because the dirty, faster going engines were considered more "manly" and it took brute strength to crank them... while the sissy "ladies" electric cars started with just the touch of a button?
And that Thomas Edison was collaborating with Ford on a clean transportation solution and was on the verge of introducing it to clean up all the soot cars were leaving everywhere, when rivals, who favored the dirty engines for economic reasons, burned down (despite fireproof walls!) workshop!
But most important, Black has a very plausible Green Fleet idea: if corporate fleets (Fed Ex, UPS, Postal Services) DEMAND electric cars--he warns that hybrids only postpone the problem--that are NOT oil dependent--the motor companies will build them so fast our heads will spin!
Please check it out, Laurie. It is such an inspiration to me that you've done so much to educate me and millions like me who didn't have a clue.
Thanks for this book and for putting Global Warming on the front page! Please keep going! (P.S. I loved your dedication. I guess we all need to thank Larry David for telling you it would be "Easier to change the world than me!" :)

    2 out of 5 stars Weak effort.......2006-12-30

We recently heard Laurie David speak and purchased this book later. I can't say we got much out of it. First, I guess you can say it is compact, but that is because there are only 54 pages of content. Second, if you've not lived in a cave for the last year, you have to be somewhat familiar with the basic issue of global warming. I recognize that is largely due to Laurie's role in An Inconvenient Truth, a defining event in raising public conciousness.

Short advice, spend you money on a donation to NRDC or buy World Changing and skip this book.

    Book Description

In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, Al Gore's summer blockbuster "An Inconvenient Truth", and crude oil prices soaring to all-time highs, more people than ever know the truth about our oil addiction. Global warming is here. M. King Hubbert's oil peak is fast approaching (or may already have arrived). The secret's out: fossil fuel reserves are dwindling and popular interest has created the need for accessible, realistic solutions.

The Citizen-Powered Energy Handbook, a clear-eyed view of the critical situation we face, offers ways out. Greg Pahl examines energy technologies currently available and homes in on renewable energy strategies that can be adopted by individuals and communities. Such cooperative initiatives have been common in Europe for years and are beginning to gain a foothold in the US. Each chapter focuses on a different renewable energy category—solar, wind, water, biomass, liquid biofuels, and geothermal—then reviews their advantages and disadvantages and desccribes numerous examples of successful, proven local initiatives.

The Citizen-Powered Energy Handbook is an eloquent appeal for community and regional action to initiate an array of solutions to energy needs until now controlled by large, distant utilities and consortiums. It is time to take back control of the energy and environmental challenges ahead; this book will help people do just that. It is a handbook for anyone ready to take the first steps towards a more sustainable future.

5 out of 5 stars "It's time to return to the community, make amends, clean up the mess and get back on the right path.".......2007-08-17

This quote from Pat Murphy, Executive Director of Community Service Inc. and found on page 260 of "The Citizen-Powered Energy Guide: Community Solutions To A Global Crisis" seems to neatly sum up the overall theme of author Greg Pahl's terrific new book. It seems that the more I read about the problem of peak oil and the upcoming energy crunch the more convinced I become that these matters will need to be addressed and solved at the local level. The bad news is that our illustrious leaders in Washington D.C. in both the Executive and Legislative branches of government just don't seem to get it and are content to stay the course with the same failed energy policies that have cost this nation dearly over the past quarter century. The good news is that civic-minded individuals, community groups and enlightened entreprenuers all over this land have decided to take matters into their own hands and are going about the business of tackling these extremely difficult issues at the grass-roots level. It is at once a very scary and an extremely exciting time!
In "The Citizen-Powered Energy Handbook" author Greg Pahl explains why the energy challenges facing the United States in the coming decades are not likely to be solved by the big multi-national energy companies. It seems that there is no one technology out there capable of acting as the "magic wand" to solve all of our energy problems. Of course conservation is clearly a major part of the solution. Did you know that about 6% of the electricity generated in this country is used to dry clothes? If only we had leadership that would encourage us to conserve. That would be a great start! It is clear that our future lies in the development of alternative fuels like solar, wind, water, geothermal, biomass and liquid biofuels. Greg Pahl devotes a chapter to each of these technologies and explains the exciting new developments and limitations of each of them. He introduces us to people and companies who are at the forefront of these new cutting-edge technologies. And he explains why different regions will have to customize strategies based on the available resources in their particular area. This is information that is absolutely vital for anyone interested in becoming involved in the push for alternative fuels and in lobbying for changes in governmental policies that would favor such pursuits.
I am very pleased to report that "The Citizen-Powered Energy Handbook: Community Solutions To A Global Crisis" is written in clear, easy to understand language. As another reviewer has indicated this is "must" reading for activists all over the country. As far as I am concerned this book is "must" reading for any citizen who is interested in getting up to speed on these promising new techologies. At the same time it is extremely important for people to understand that there are advantages and disadvantages to each one of these strategies. Yes, it would appear that the ultimate solution to our energy dilemma will likely be a complex mix of all of these technologies coupled with a drastically increased emphasis on conservation. I simply cannot say enough about the work that Greg Pahl has done here. Very highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars It covers what communities can do!.......2007-06-13

Rather than being a pie in the sky, the book shows what communities around the world are already doing to produce energy locally, rather than just getting it from the big utilities. Rather than coal, nuclear or other environmentally damaging methods, the books covers the how, whys, problems and opportunities of communities producing their own power. With global warming and peak oil looming, this book couldnot have been published at a better time.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Resource.......2006-01-30

"The Global Citizen" is a MUST READ for anyone seeking to establish an international lifestyle. I especially liked the sections that allowed real people who've moved abroad the opportunity to write about their experiences. These "journal entries" gave me a lot of inspiration. The book is loaded with program information for study, voluteering and work abroad. There is a chapter on financing your journeys which offers information about scholarships and grants that I didn't even know existed! I highly recommend "The Global Citizen" for anyone serious about going abroad short-term or long-term.

2 out of 5 stars Good introductory value, poor on details.......2004-09-11

If you are under 20, not sure what to do with your life and contemplating about how cool it is to travel to Europe and save the rain forests - this book is perfect for you (even better if you want to save rain forests in Europe). Then, if you are not from US, don't have kickass amount of money to spend or know exactly what you want - bypass this title.

The Global Citizen offers a lot of ways for an American to go abroad; if you live elsewhere, only 20% of all the suggestions are relevant to you. Of these 20%, most require significant investment. What's more important, neither of these ways is described in detail.

Large sections of this book are dedicated to the fine art of proving that 2 and 2 equals 4. For example, the author dedicates 2 or 3 pages to explanation why it pays to know languages others than English.

On the other hand, little to no useful tips are given on most important subjects, like convincing the foreign employer to hire you, or listing places with high expat concentrations, etc. Most of the work abroad opportunities are standard English teaching stuff - I don't need to buy a book to tell me about it, really.

The book is full of howlers. Page 199: 450 - 2550 British pounds are translated as 310 - 1767 US dollars (neat, huh?). Page 88: Arctic Odysseys provides high quality travel experiences in the Arctic regions of Canada, Greenland, Siberia and China (someone please find Arctic China for me). Page 213: the author discovers a new country: Moldova-Ukraine. And this is just a small part.

Again, good enough as introduction, many ideas, very low on details.

    5 out of 5 stars Inspirational Book!.......2004-05-17

This book is wonderful and I would recommend it to anyone! The author writes on a personal level like she is talking to you and it is also written from a emotional level so it is easy to understand. This book gets you excited about all the possibilities and the author explains any fears you may have and how you can get over them and overall she gets the word across to never give up! She also gives e-mail adresses from other people who have experience travel. This is a great book, everyone can benefit from this.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!.......2004-02-25

The Global Citizen is an excellent book for anyone thinking of doing anything abroad! It covers a wide range of topics, from studying to volunteering abroad. The author provides practical information on how to identify your goal, approach it and then directs the reader on where to find more information on each individual topic. This book is very stimulating and most certainly motivating! A great buy!

5 out of 5 stars the ONLY career guide for adventure seekers.......2003-05-06

The "Global Citizen" is an excellent resource for anyone who wants to travel or work abroad. Most importantly for me, this book has a wealth of information on careers abroad that I had not thought of before. Most career guides are so narrow in scope that I rarely find much use in them because they are so "8-5" in nature.
The other cool thing about this book is that it's full of websites with info. on every aspect of living, working, or volunteering abroad.
I love the personal stories in the section "A Global Citizen's Perspective" because, as a traveler, you can really connect to the experience of the author and other people who have done what you want to do.
If you are looking for a a life changing adventure, then travel abroad. If you want to stay abroad, then get this book!!

The editor, who is a professor of international development at American University in Washington, D.C., has selected more than 40 documents (mostly written by activists themselves) that illustrate both the diversity of the movement and its underlying themes. Whether your interest is in indigenous peoples, the environment, the labor movement, fair trade, or development, you will find valuable and illuminating information in this volume.

        Book Description

In his newest book, award-winning environmental journalist David Steinman makes sense out of the tangle of issues surrounding climate change. He provides clear, simple steps we can all take to make more responsible environmental choices in our everyday lives, from the food we put on our tables, to the products we use in our homes, and the cars we buy. He shows, for example, how changing even a simple habit of driving to the grocery store to ordering food online can save almost 900 miles a year, reducing both traffic congestion and petroleum emissions.
Steinman traveled the country from his home base in California through the United States to talk with farmers, businessmen, professors, housewives, counter-terrorism experts and many others to find the link between environmentalism, conservatism, patriotism and national security. He reveals how our reliance on petroleum-based products and chemical pesticides negatively impacts our health, our national security and our planet. He presents a number of fascinating anecdotes and case studies about people and companies working to live “green” — using ecological wisdom as the basis for their decision-making — in the process improving everything from their children’s IQs to their company’s bottom line.

5 out of 5 stars A Call for Green Patriotism.......2007-01-06

In Safe Trip to Eden, the author introduces an interesting concept called Green Patriotism, which is the call to Americans to protect our environment because it will ultimately strengthen our national security. He takes us on a trip across America and beyond (to the rainforest in Costa Rica, the San Juan Islands, the Adirondacks, etc.) and each place we learn something new about our current environmental state of affairs - the problems, what is being done by environmentalists to correct them, and how we can make choices in our own lives to support the solutions.

The author emphasizes our power as consumers in a capitalistic culture -that each of our purchase decisions is like casting a vote. He also makes the point that environmentalism is not a partisan issue. While it has been associated with liberals, he gives a history of Republicans and environmentalism in chapter 9.

The book is extremely comprehensive in that it discusses the presence of petrochemical toxins in food and home products, the evolving green car industry, a facinating Pentagon risk assessment report on global warming, natural medicine, the treatment of livestock, negative effects of underpricing in the marketplace, how to maintain a sustainable forest, and much more.

Overall, it's a facinating, empowing and very educating read. I highly recommend it!
