Excellent resource.......2000-05-02
Of course dictionaries aren't usually meant to be read through like novels. Even though I haven't done that with this book, I would if I had the time. This is a must have for any student of the Word of God. In addition to the definitions, the book also gives good insight on the topics, placing them in their historical context. Zondervan has done it again!
Book Description
This new Encyclopedia draws upon articles in
The International Encyclopedia of Education, 2nd Edition (described by
Choice as being
"a premier resource when judged on virtually every criteria applied to a reference work") with revisions as well as new articles. It provides an understanding of where the economics of education has been, where it is heading, and where it needs to go in the future to provide further insights into the human role in production and the production of human skills valued in the labour market.
The economics of education has both been expanded into new areas of research and has deepened and changed its analysis of traditional areas, such as educational finance, the production of knowledge, and the relation between education and economic growth. In the past decade theories have been modified and new concepts have appeared. The rapid change within the field convinced the publisher and the Editors-in-Chief of the need for a completely new edition of this valuable compilation.
The volume is divided into eight sections: The economics of education, then and now, education and labour markets, the benefits of education, education economic growth and technological change, education, income distribution and discrimination, the production of education, evaluating educational investment, and financing education. Each of the sections has its own introduction.

• Major KJV terms are cross-referenced to broaden your understanding of translational nuances and distinctions.
• Four indexes include: Hebrew words, Greek words, Scripture references, and topical index.

Detailed to perfection.......2000-06-13
I have always taken my studies in the Bible very seriously. The scriptures teach us in Acts 17:10-12, to examine the scriptures daily. I needed to do an extensive study on the levels of authority in the church. I found the NIV Encyclopedia of Bible Words in addition to the NIV Bible Dictionary by Zondervan to be very helpful. It truely gives a background history to the different degrees of Authority in the Bible and to what extent it should be impressed upon one another. For example, husbands over wives, the authority that Paul used for building others up and not for tearing someone down and the authority that God gave Jesus...just to name a few. I recommend it for anyone truely wanting to be like the "Bereans". This book will help you with the root meaning(s) of words or with specific books of the Bible.

Book Description
Featuring more than 200 entries written by an international roster of experts, this work is the most authoritative and accessible source available for educators, researchers and students seeking an understanding of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) youth. This ground-breaking work examines policy, practice and research concerning youth who are often the victims of bullying and harrassment. Interdisciplinary, engaging articles examine the policy, practice, and research concerning the role, responses, and responsibilities of schools, educators, and the larger community to LGBT youth. Ranging from the the school curriculum to popular culture, topics include: gender roles, AIDS and HIV education, teen pregnancy, rural youth, prostitution, mental health, race and racism, counseling, gender roles, identity development, discrimination, anti-bias curriculum, children of LGBT parents, film, homophobia, legal issues, various ethnic groups, prejudice, religion, stereotypes, social class, college youth, and youth culture. There is international coverage as well of the United Kingdom, Asia, Australia, South America, and Europe. Research and scholarship on sexualities, youth, and education has exploded, especially in North America, Australia, and Europe. Over the past 25 years, remarkable progress has been made politically, culturally, and educationally with respect to LGBT and Queer concerns. For example, hundreds of gay-straight alliances operate in high schools and colleges; court settlements have resulted in greater administrative sensitivity to harassment of gay students; and the number of college courses including gay concerns and issues is growing. While there are increasing numbers of articles and books covering LGBT issues and life, this work is the first comprehensive source to look at the important nexus of education and LGBT youth.

An excellent specialty collection recommendation.......2007-01-07
The fine 2-volume set YOUTH, EDUCATION AND SEXUALITIES: AN INTERNATIONAL ENCYCLOPEDIA is an excellent college-level recommendation: it features over 200 entries written by an international roster of experts ranging from educators to researchers, and it examines the policy and research surrounding youth who are members of the gay or transgender community. Yes, it's very specific - but there's a wealth of detail from legal and social issues to health issues and more surrounding LGBT youth, and hundreds of gay-straight alliances in high schools and colleges, and all are given important details where which would be missing in less detailed coverages. An excellent specialty collection recommendation for professional, academic, and community library Human Sexuality reference collections..

An Inconvenient Truth
ASIN: 0313327165 |
Book Description
Youth as a unique group is a 20th century idea. The changes wrought worldwide by WWII, propelled adolescence to a status and identity that coincided with unparalleled economic growth. While developmental psychologists refined their theories of normal growth and maturation, society and the media were at work constructing youth as consumers, thereby liberating them from traditional family controls. An increasingly smaller world impinges mightily on the culture of youth. An international and inter-disciplinary roster of experts shed light on today's youth culture by exploring such topics as hip hop culture; punk culture; social justice movements; video games; political activism; language and identity; post-feminism; television; rites of passage; heterosexuality and homosexuality; race and ethnicity; social class; poetry and literature; visual art; conceptions of beauty and body image; academics; sports; drugs; families; refugee youth; the Internet; youth journalism; fashion; and violence. Adults and adolescents will find this authoritative and reliable guide accessible and fascinating. In addition to excellent essays, users will find a timeline of contemporaneous international develpments in youth culture. An introductory essay places youth in historical and contemporary contexts and underscores the notion that despite their power as consumers in a market-oriented world, youth are still seen--and see themselves--in contradictory ways. In short, this work brings new understanding to the complex and fluid phenomenon of youth culture.
Customer Reviews:
I like my books to be edited first........2006-06-19
This book is captivating if you're browsing, but it's virtually useless as a research tool. The writing is full of flaws--sentences are mangled, thoughts are buried under odd syntax, typos are everywhere. Greenwood needs to take their time and stop churning out this stuff without SERIOUS pre-publishing revisions.
Essays on a uniquely 20th century culture.......2006-04-28
The 2-volume CONTEMPORARY YOUTH CULTURE: AN INTERNATIONAL ENCYCLOPEDIA edited by Shirley Steinberg, et.al. appears in a fine 2-volume set to provide a strong set of essays on the idea of youth culture, a uniquely 20th century culture. From a timeline of international developments and trends affecting youth culture to the growing powers of youth as consumers, as potential political voters, and as activisits, CONTEMPORARY YOUTH CULTURE takes a broad base in considering the group's social influences and trends, language, concerns and more.

This International Edition of 'Famous First Facts' expands coverage of first facts past the borders of the United States to chronicle important facts from all of world history. There are more than 5000 firsts from hundreds of countries, ranging in time from 3.5 billion years ago to the present. Customer Reviews:
A good research tool.......2000-09-20
A new title in the fantastic Wilson Fact Series, which is renowned for providing the small details of history. First Famous Facts (international edition) is packed with accurate historical information about the first time that just about anything happened on the globe. Unlike Joseph Nathan Kane's great American edition, however, the date information is a little lacking here. Even in relatively recent events, such as the opening of the English Channel Tunnel, often only the month and year is given. For those of you who need the exact date in which events occurred don't expect as extensive information as in the American edition. Nevertheless, I'm glad I bought it and it has already proved very useful.
An excellent personal, school & community library selection........2000-06-05
An excellent reference work for public and school libraries, Steven Anzovin and Janet Podell's Famous First Facts appears in an international edition, charting thousands of discoveries, inventions, and events around the world. This takes the form of capsule entries in an encyclopedia containing over 500 firsts from hundreds of countries. An excellent library resource.
