Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A must-have for the FRM exam.......2006-11-03

Jorion's book is indispensable (and, in my experience, sufficient) when preparing for the FRM exam; if you are taking it, think no more. An added bonus is the impressive number of typos and errors to test your knowledge :)

5 out of 5 stars very satisfied.......2006-07-30

good to have a wide range of subjects in one handbook. it seems I don't need the other library for my everyday work

4 out of 5 stars Good enough for what it claims.......2006-05-05

The people who have written reviews primarily have gripes that they didn't pass. They must have thought the book was THE ONLY RESOURCE they would need. I used this book and I did pass the exam. It wasn't the only resource I used though.

The publishers of the book even claim that using only this book will not help you pass the exam. It is an OVERVIEW text. It is a primer to help you delve into the material. This book will not substitute the large amount of qualitative reading and equation memorization that you'll need to do in order to pass.

I give it a 4 mainly because the book does what it claims and because some of the more negative reviews are too far-fetched. Remember to buy the version that applies to your test year.

1 out of 5 stars I Wish I Hadn't.......2006-03-30

This book cost me the FRM last year. I made it the center of my study program. The book's writing is atrocious; there are gaps in what is covered; and there are many errors and misstatements. I wasted six weeks struggling with this book. When I finally realized my mistake, it was too late to rescue my study program, and I failed the exam. I am very disillusioned with Jorion and GARP. This shoddy, overpriced paperback makes me think they are in it just for the money. This year, I have signed up for the CFA exam instead. So far, I have been very impressed with their study materials.

Rosemary H Campbell, Director, International Sales & Ops, 12/02/2005
Capon, Potter and Schindler lay out a comprehensive roadmap for developing a global account program
"Implementing global account management is not easy. At IBM it took us several years and many iterations to build the current program that today puts the right senior level focus on our top global accounts -- and we're not finished yet. Fred Schindler was part of that struggle and Managing Global Accounts in part recounts its history. However, IBM is only a small part of this book. In a unique partnership of the business world with academe, Capon, Potter and Schindler lay out a comprehensive roadmap for developing a global account program. If you are trying to support your global customers, I recommend you read and use this book. You will save yourselves time and many missteps as you learn from the myriad of insights the authors provide." Rosemary H Campbell, Director, International Sales & Operations, Worldwide, IBM

Lisa Napolitano, CEO, SAMA, 12/02/2005
This book offers companies what they've been clamoring for
"Nearly every company today is forced to confront the challenge of supporting requirements in a global business environment. The reality is, as companies have become larger and more complex, the task of trying to leverage your position and information around the world as one unit is enormous, even for a sophisticated multi-national company. What the Strategic Account Management Association has learned is that organizational commitment, in the form of management support as well as resources, is mandatory to success. What we've seen, however, is that too many firms fail to make a strong business case for change, or worse yet, get buy-in to the wrong set of expectations. If only Managing Global Accounts had come along sooner! This book offers companies what they've been clamoring for - a framework for asking the right questions, performing the right analytics, and translating that into an action plan that fits their unique circumstances. Companies that have already implemented global account management can effectively reassess and recalibrate based on the authors' practical, real-world experience. And for those whose firms have yet to fully embrace the concepts, this book will become your guide and your ally in convincing your most important stakeholders that Global Account Management - and what that requires - is not an option for firms that intend to be competitive."

David Macaulay, Sr. Vice President, Siemens AG, 12/02/2005
Finally a book which can help
"Finally a book which can help corporations transform the art of selling into the science of growth. Companies now have the chance to impact their customer assets in the same way they have optimized their supply chains. It is all here and the winners will know how to use it."

Chris Morrison, Divisional Vice President, Nalco, 12/02/2005
This is the real McCoy
"As a VP managing global account managers in a global Fortune 300 company, I learned more from reading this book's first few chapters then I have in my last five business books. The authors have done a great job pulling together all the logistics from starting, hiring, training, supporting, and sustaining a successful program. If anyone every wanted a book on how to CORRECTLY build a global account program, using best practices, this is IT!!!! I liked this book's easy going interface played out by the `almost believable' reality interactions between four main characters set up in the first chapters. You have a CEO, a consultant, a global account director and a global account manager, all struggling with their time commitments on one hand and their desire to make this work in their heads. They all learn a lot from each other on a flight delay (very real to any global account manager) and subsequent travel/trip. This helps the reader by following the questions and answers of both parties. Three cheers to Capon, Schindler and Potter for a great narrative of technical training and business savvy all in one tight package. I am confident that the careful reading, comprehension and implementation of this books tenet's will save many firms tens of thousands of dollars in consultant fees. This is the real McCoy!" Chris Morrison, Divisional Vice President, Nalco Global Accounts

Successful global account management
"Successful global account management can be the most difficult sales and marketing initiative undertaken by any firm. The authors of this book truly understand the complexities involved and they provide a thorough overview of the required critical success factors." Tom VanHootegem, Vice President Strategic Segment Sales, OfficeMax Contract

2 out of 5 stars Small kernels of value amidst tons of ore.......2006-12-28

This book reads as though it were written by someone who spent their business career in sales operations. You know the ones - overly preoccupied with process with little understanding of how things really work.

The first nine chapters are written in a workmanlike fashion. They describe the rationale and pitfalls of those struggling with global account management, but the prescriptions for actually doing something are too superficial to be of any real use.

The most important topic (and the authors acknowledge it) is quantifying the business value from global account management. The authors save this until the first part of chapter 10. Their most important insight is that the value from global account management depends on the company. Wow - I paid to find that out? A framework or taxonomy for measuring business value would have been much more useful.

Their treatment of the problems associated with global account management was one of the better sections - I give them credit for including it.

Finally, there are half a dozen tables included throughout. I found them to be the most useful part of the book.

This book can easily be skimmed in one cross-country plane trip. If you are looking for a few good ideas, check it out. If you are looking for a definitive treatise on global account management, look elsewhere.

"Filled with in-depth insights and practical lessons". No, it is not. There are several hundred multiple choice quesitons with answers, all taken from about 10 years ago. One suh quesiton is to say which of four Latin American countries has the best debt rating - 10 years ago.
The menu gives you a choice of four answers and then "explaina" the ocrrect answer in a single sentence.
The questions go from the beginning, quesiton 1, to the end. This means if you are using it for revision, you will remember the answers ad so will not find them very useful for revision. They did not even include a random generator.
The publishers and GARP should be ashamed of theselves for engaging in such naked price gouging.

Explaining Growth attempts to compile the most comprehensive assessment of growth in developing and transition countries. The first phase has sought to review and discover broad similarities and comparable experiences in six regions spanning the developing world. In each region, studies were undertaken on sources of growth, markets and growth, microeconomic determinants of growth, and the political economy of growth. These reviews provide the framework for the in-depth country case studies in Phase II. This volume summarizes the main results of the regional analyses and sets the stage for the country studies.

A clear, accessible `how to' approach to the key issues involved in a global equity offering: which capital markets to tap, and how (public offering vs. private placement); which stock exchanges to list on; structuring the underwriting syndicates; due diligence questions; road shows and marketing activities; whether to disclose forecasts; which lawyers should give `negative assurance' as to the disclosures in the prospectus; and how to negotiate representations, `outs', indemnification and other terms of the underwriting agreements. A group of leading securities practitioners from different capital markets -- the US, Hong Kong, France, Canada, Japan and Australia -- take the reader through each stage, using a case study of a global IPO of an emerging markets issuer to illustrate the process. Audience: A road map for securities lawyers, investment bankers, and senior finance officers of companies contemplating a global equity capital-raising exercise.

          Book Description

By understanding the historical antecedents and current organization of industry associations, business and government will better be able to help restructure them and thus assist American industry more effectively battle foreign competition. Procassini maintains that American associations can, and should be reorganized by reviewing and comparing their origins and operations today to similar associations in America's two major trade competitors, Germany and Japan. Comprehensive, thoroughly researched, readable and anecdotal, this book is the first to focus on the role of associations in the global marketplace. A provocative and useful analysis for businesspeople, government officials, and members of the academic community concerned with the structure and practice of international commerce. The author compares U.S. industry associations to those in Germany and Japan in two ways. First, he looks at their past legacies and present mandates; then, with special emphasis on America's major high-tech industries, he analyzes their organization and operation. After a general overview of the past, present, and foreseeable future of associations, and a detailed study of those in the U.S., Germany, and Japan, he turns to specific industries -- aerospace, biotechnology, semiconductors, and computer systems -- and their trade associations, defining and comparing the characteristics of each. Part IV of the book digs into the ways in which associations fail, as well as succeed, in the mission demanded of them today. From this analysis and the author's extensive experience as a corporation and association executive, emerge a series of recommendations for redefining the associations' mission in today's global economy, and a blueprint for achieving these goals.

Trade associations are major forces for the promotion of industry-wide, national and global actions in technology, human resources, trade policy, capital formation and a spectrum of other business issues. Discussions of business topics that miss the role of trade associations, and that focus solely on free competition or government direction, ignore the increasing role of "competitors in alliance". Having led one of the most vociferous and successful U.S. trade associations, the author writes from actual experience as opposed to academic speculation.

          Book Description

Over the past two decades, the major international corporations have become industrial lobbyists within the European Union to such an extent that they pose a threat to democracy.

This new and fully revised edition of Europe Inc. provides a much-needed insight into the systematic ways in which transnational corporations work through lobby groups to shape EU policy. With a new introduction, updated statistics and new resources, it's an invaluable handbook for anyone interested in the EU and the political power that corporations wield.

The authors cover the major players in this anti-democratic practice and analyse the factors that have enabled corporate influence in Europe to dominate. They examine how governments have been persuaded to increase competitiveness by dismantling and privatising public services, deregulating industry, and dismantling social and environmental protections; the increasing influence of corporate lobby groups on decision makers and the corresponding lack of voice given to small business, organised labour and individual citizens; the impact of the single market and currency; structural adjustment in Eastern Europe; the role of European industrial lobby groups within the WTO, and the important Multilateral Agreement on Investment. Case studies include the biotech industry, the public relations industry and the UN climate summit.

The authors are all working with the Corporate Europe Observatory (CEO) in Amsterdam. CEO is a research and campaign group targeting the threats to democracy, equity, social justice and the environment posed by the economic and political power of corporations and their lobby groups.

5 out of 5 stars A devastating wake up call. Highly recommended.......2004-08-10

Now in a fully revised new edition, Europe Inc. examines the ways in which major industrial corporations have gained so much power as lobbyists within the European Union that they pose a threat to democracy itself. From the factors that have promoted the domination of corporate influence, to how that influence has pressured governments to privatize public services, deregulate industry, and remove social and environmental protections, to the roughshod treatment of small business, organized labor, and individual citizens, and much more, Europe Inc. is a devastating wake up call. Highly recommended.
