Book Description
This comprehensive, market-leading text emphasizes the three major driving forces behind e-commerce: technology change, business development, and social controversies. Each of these driving forces is represented in every chapter, and together they provide a coherent conceptual framework for understanding e-commerce, typical of Laudon books. The book offers in-depth and comprehensive coverage of concepts in marketing, economics, IS/IT, privacy and intellectual property. The book contains numerous case studies and an additional case book is available.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent textbook on E-commerce.......2006-04-05
I just received the new edition of Laudon and Traver's textbook on e-commerce and think its just great! I previously used the 2nd edition, which I also loved, and this new edition lives up to its predecessor. It contains all new and updated information and is extremely current. Its so well-written that it doesn't read like a textbook at all. I highly recommend it to anyone interesting in learning about e-commerce.
Good, but dated...........2005-11-26
I have used this textbook for several years - while it is a good basic source of information, it badly needs updating and supplementation in several important areas: RFID is not mentioned; Mobile/hand set E-Commerce is covered at a surface level, Search Engine and major Portal marketing needs updating, and much of the data are 3+ years old - very old given the rapid changes taking place.
If you are teaching an E-Commerce course from a Marketing perspective, with this book as the base, be prepared to suppement this textbook with books such as Spychips, and student subscriptions to WSJ or NY Times. Ad Age is another excellent supplementary information source.
This is one of the few areas in business where the textbook should be updated every 2 years.
Note from Spring 07 - the newer edition is better but still requires supplementation on areas auch as RFID and security.
Great Buy.......2005-10-04
This was a great buy, The book came in the indicated condition and has been a great help!
E-Commerce: Business, Technology, Society.......2005-08-18
Good book, easy to read and informative. Gives a good overview of e-commerce and introduces you into the business giving you a historical perspective and good hints to develop you own site.
Practical, Informative, and Interesting.......2005-07-06
This is a college level text book that is actually interesting. It is very well written and most importantly, it is NOT boring. It's amazing how easy it is to read such a large book in a short amount of time when the book is well written. You will be able to actually design and learn how to host your own E-Commerce web site after reading this book. And it's a lot less expensive than you might think. This book is expensive but well worth it with excellent print and illustrations. It's easy to see that a lot of work went into this gigantic hardbound masterpiece.

I met the authors of this book and i highly reccommend to anyone who wishes to learn more about Internet Marketing to buy it. His knowledge, research and academic background on the subject will provide you the most essential tools to understand what Internet Marketing is all about. Don't think about missing this opportunity. The book is well structured, written in simple english and contains excellent examples of how the major e-commerce players in the market use Internet marketing to promote their products. Customer Reviews:
It worked for me.......2005-10-26
I thoroughly enjoyed reading and applying the techniques in this well researched book. They can be broken down into three categories (1) New techniques: social networking, blogging, RSS, etc. (2) Popular techniques: search engine optimization, email marketing, viral marketing. (3) Outdated techniques: Usenet posting, autoresponder, etc. Overall, it's a solid book with up-to-date information. Highly recommended.
SEO Hype vs. Solid Web Marketing.......2005-07-05
It's interesting to note that SEO has become such a hype. There is no silver bullet to getting Web traffic as this book has pointed out. SEO techniques are essentially spamming on different levels. Google, Yahoo! and MSN change their algorithm routinely to combat spamming. So any technique that you use would give you high ranking for a while, then your site ranking would disappear. I like this book because it presents a wide and effective approach. Quality contents, for example, will give your site a high ranking on the long run. Two reasons: 1. search engines like them, and 2. people like them which prompt them to link and that helps raise ranking in search engines.
101 Ways to Boost Your Web Traffic.......2005-05-24
I recently purchased 3 books through Amazon for the purpose of improving my web site traffic. I purchased this one based on the reviews I read here. Boy! did I get taken.
This book has 10 chapters. Nine of them provide what I would call basic web site common sense and is oriented for an absolute beginner. The one chapter that has a bit of meat in it on how to modify your web pages to improve traffic just doesn't go into enough detail to be really worth while.
If you want a good book, with a lot of meat in it, get "Search Engine Optimization for Dummies." You get a great deal of information right from the first page and plenty of advice on how to help you.
worth every penny.......2004-07-27
great book for everyone in the field. wealth of information and resources on a wide range of topics. well written. this book keeps you interested all the way to the end as the author shares many creative ways to market to your desired audience. a must have, you will not regret this purchase.
Solid Advice.......2004-07-26
This book is best described as a do-it-yourself guide. Instead of paying someone else thousands of dollars, I'm able to get many more leads after applying just some of the techniques in the book. I find the book easy to understand and use. There is a tendency to think the techniques are too simple to be useful. The key, however, is to test them out. The ones that produce great results are usually the ones that appear to be simple.
101 Ways has helped me optimize my Web pages in a significant way. The advice on the use of Meta tags is a good example. I learn that most global search engines not longer use them. However, for international and intranet search engines, I will still need to set up web pages with meta tags. Solid advice like this is what motivates me to come back and write a good review for the book. So get it, use it, and profit by it!

Less than inspiring content.......2005-01-20
If you have a solid insight into the Web, there's no need to purchase this book. Many of the examples are dated and overly simplistic for readers looking to walk away with greater insights about the Web.
Almost Obsolete.......2004-06-09
Most of the URLs and principles mentioned in the book went back to 2000, and they are no longer valid. I feel that an update is needed. It does have many great ideas, and the book is easy to read. Hope to see a new edition soon.
A complete how-to book to determine the success of a Web sit.......2004-04-05
A complete how-to book to determine the success of a Web site. It clearly explains how to use metrics to quantify business goals. The tools, services, and techniques for measurement described in the book will be helpful for any e-business or other company with an Internet presence. A must-read
A very good Web marketing book.......2002-03-28
This is one of the better books I've read on Web marketing. Some of Sterne's best advice comes in Chapter 1 when he writes, "Having a site that's cool and looks sharp is fine if that's all your target market is really after. The game, though, will go to those who come up with unique services. If you have to choose between fun, interesting, or useful, useful wins. Every time. Hands down."
Sterne starts the book talking about the basic questions in marketing: What are you trying to sell? Who are you trying to sell it to? And, what do they really want? He gives some good advice on working through the process of answering these questions and relates these issues well to Web related marketing. Chapter 3 is a great chapter on usability issues. It's refreshing to see a marketing guy like Sterne give so much attention to usability. There are ample references to Jakob Nielsen's research into usability issues, mixed with Sterne's own good thinking on the subject.
In the middle chapters of the book, Sterne talks about the different ways to effectively use the unique aspects of the Web --interactivity and personalization -- to market to your customers. I particularly liked his discussion of interactivity and flow in Chapter 4. He then goes on to discuss the use of the Web to do customer management and dedicates a whole chapter to partner relationship management. These are probably my least favorite sections of the book. He does give some good examples of companies effectively using the Web for this purpose, but I don't think the chapters on CRM and PRM where very thorough or insightful.
The last few chapters are dedicated to measuring the effectiveness of your Web marketing effort, managing your site, and what the future holds. In the chapter on measuring effectiveness, Sterne talks about the cost to reach and ultimately acquire a customer through your marketing efforts. The following information on Web log analysis was kind of thin, but Sterne does do a pretty good job discussing "The Softer Side of Assessment" like measuring customer satisfaction and reputation management. The chapter on managing your site was thin at best. For site management, I'd recommend Jessica Burdman's book, "Collaborative Web Development: Strategies and Best Practices for Web Teams."
Overall, I'd give Sterne an A on this book effort. The first half of the book is very, very good. The last few chapters felt somewhat rushed. Granted, Sterne picked some chapter topics that should be book topics, but even the summarized information didn't seem well put together. Maybe Jim was getting tired, or maybe I was getting tired. I finished reading this book on a red-eye flight home.
Great Book.......2001-10-26
This is one of the better books I've read on internet marketing. I really recommend this book for anyone who is getting into this web marketing arena.

The material follows a life cycle approach to show students the entire process of e-commerce from "vision" or strategic planning to "fulfillment" for delivery of products and services with the goal of customer satisfaction.
Customer Reviews:
A horrible book for a horrible class.......2007-07-03
As the previous reviewer pointed out this book is out of date and just wrong in some cases. My professor used this book during lecture and discussed in detail parts of it (where were incidentally out of date).
A friend of mine, Eric Corley, who manages a computer related magazine is mentioned, but they spelled his name wrong! (And this is the second edition).
If you're a professor looking to get a text for an intro to e-commerce class, please god buy this book, then burn it, and then choose a different text.
Screaming fits - is what this book gave me........2005-11-01
I am stuck using this book. It is so bad I do not know where to start .... outdated, imprecise, inconsistent and incorrect terminology, contradicting itself and what I can describe as an "emotional" rather than technical writing style. Lack of simple clarifying examples. Misleading figures. Many key terms are defines multiple times in a different and misleading way.
Let me just give FEW exampes:
1. It is so very out of date - it does not even mention DSL, it goes on forever about dial-up!
2. Quote: "Infrared transmission operates at frequencies approaching the speed of light". I am not sure what that means, last time I checked frequency and speed were two different things.
3. p. 132, "Portal: a Web page that offers links to other sites". According to this ANY old web page is a portal.
4. p. 165, "Internet Service Provider (ISP): a specialiazed company that connects customers with PCs and browsers to the Internet". Sorry - you are out of luck if you are running a server, or do not intend to use a browser!
5. p.218 - range for WLAN is listed as "only 150 feet", VS , p.219 range for a WLAN from less than 100 to 300 feet.
6. talks abotut KM (knowledge management) in Ch 5 but never defines it.
7. loves imprecise expressions with little substance like "information super highway", "entrance ramp to the internet", "virtually unstoppable", "possibilities are truly endless"
8. figure 14-7 labeled "Quantum computing", while displaying an eliptic curve.
It feels like the author was just hurrying to get yet another book out in an area in which he lacked serious expertise.

eBay Income: How Anyone of Any Age, Location, and/or Background Can Build a Highly Profitable Online Business with eBay
ASIN: 0789734311 |
Book Description
On any given day there are more than 28 million items listed for auction at eBay, the world's largest online trading community. Almost $34 billion worth of merchandise, in more than 1.4 billion individual auctions, was traded over eBay during the year 2004; that's $93 million a day, or more than $1,000 every second. At the end of 2004, eBay had more than 135 million registered users - more than double the number of users just two years previous.
The first two editions of this book were best-sellers, so it's only natural we would update this great book to reflect some of eBay's most recent upgrades such as: eBay Stores, Half.com, and Trading Assistants.
Download Description
On any given day there are more than 7 million items listed for auction at ebay (www.ebay.com), the world's largest online trading community. At the end of its last fiscal quarter, ebay had 49.7 million registered users, more than double the number of users just two years previous. It is estimated that $9.3 billion worth of merchandise, in more than 423 million individual auctions, was traded over eBay during the year 2002. To an absolute beginner, using eBay can be an intimidating experience. What do you need to do to participate? How do you place a bid? What do you do when the auction is over? Can you really trust the auction seller? Potential buyers and sellers need a book that takes them step-by-step through the eBay auction process and helps them become more successful over time. That book is this book: Absolute Beginner's Guide to ebay. Also included is information of value to ebay users wanting to make the jump to power-seller status.

eBay Introduction.......2007-05-26
Reference: Fourth Edition
As an introduction to eBay, I found this book to be most helpful to a first time user of eBay. The index section added to the value of the text. The "special elements" such as "Note" and "Caution" were a nice bonus.
Great reading for beginners ........2007-02-21
Since I was a beginner when I started to read this book now that I finished it I feel more confident at ebay it touch every area of ebay from registering to buy and sell, listing, shipping and a lot more, I even started to sell my first two items one of them I already got a bidding, anyway, if you are a real beginner you can't go wrong with this book.
Well now that I finished it I'm gonna sell it on ebay see ya there and happy bidding.
the best of the bunch.......2005-08-02
I have a few books on ebay and this one is the easiest most user friendly book i have encountered. Love the cartoons and the bit of tongue-in-cheek fun along the way. It is well organized and actually fun to read.
Absolute Beginner Guide to E Bay by Miller.......2004-03-11
This is an excellent reference guide if you intend to sell or
purchase anything of substance on the Ebay system. A knowledge
of the world-wide web is presumed. The work teaches how to
register, the dynamics of listing fees, use of Ebay software,
winning bids, billing for buyers/sellers and a host of other
technical issues too numerous to list here. Ebay is a forum
for selling anything from art to tickets to health care products.
A strength of the Ebay system is that the auctions are timely.
They bring together buyers and sellers in a highly competitive
bidding scenario. The use of Ebay can benefit both buyers and
sellers; however, it is important to understand the considerable
protocols in order to use this system optimally. I've purchased
relatively new products at 25% of the original purchase price.
Before you can do anything like that, it is necessary to understand the search engine available at Ebay, as well as
the timing of auctions and related protocols.

A Good Intro.......2007-05-06

There IS a new book out people.......2007-03-28
Everyone is compalaining that the content is outdated. There is a fourth edition of this book that was published in 2006 and it is a great book.
Updated and packed with new information.......2005-12-22
I have the 3rd edition of this book. It was getting a little out of date. It contained references to Web sites that are long gone. The 4th edition fixes all this. It is full of new material and ideas. You'll find tons of promotional ideas that you might never think of on your own. This one is definately worth purchasing again.
facile and inadequate.......2005-09-13
Stanek gives an easy to follow guide to (maybe) cranking up your web traffic. He shows which search engines you can submit your web pages to. Plus, several directory or portal sites that might have free or paid inclusion.
But he also suggests having games or quizzes with prizes on your website to further garner an audience. Quite aside from the cost, I'm not sure this is so useful for some sites.
There is some elementary analysis of your web access log. So you can get a measure of how successful your efforts are. But this chapter is very inadequate. There are free analysis tools available; instead of thumbing manually through the log.
If you are tempted by this book, then there is a far better and more sophisticated treatment given in "Search Engine Marketing" by Moran (IBM 2005). It contains more helpful and better written details on how to write your web pages. Makes Stanek's book appear very facile and inadequate.

This book is so out of date it shouldn't be available for purchase.

How to Grow Your Business on the Internet offers techniques and ideas that you can use immediately to boost sales on the Web. You'll find the standard Net overview, with thorough tutelage on how to get connected and how to acquire a fast connection. Emery then quickly moves into deliberative discussions, explaining how you can reap the benefits of the Internet for your business and set realistic online goals. This text goes beyond discussing Web sites to include instructions on how to use e-mail, mailing lists, and search engines. How to Grow Your Business on the Internet also supplies tips on how to market, publicize, and advertise your business online as well as how to generate strategic information using the Internet. Firewalls, encryption, credit card transactions, fraud, and digital cash are covered in depth but not in overly technical terms. A particularly useful chapter uses examples from actual businesses to explain why Internet projects fail and how to make sure yours doesn't.
Customer Reviews:
You Can Benefit By Reading This Book.......2006-01-23
It has become obvious to business people everywhere that the advantages of doing business on the Internet can no longer be ignored. Even a one person operation must look into the possibilities. This book is probably the one best way of learning the pros and cons. It is a big book, 692 pages, a full 2-inches thick. It is not a manual for understanding computers, but rather a business guide to utilizing the Internet to sell products and services, to secure instant customer feedback, conduct competitive intelligence, and to satisfy many other business needs.
The author immediately cautions that 70% of the businesses using the Internet today lose money. Some of this loss may be due to the lack of the use of common sense, but in a great many cases it is the failure to understand the unique nature of doing business on the Internet. Vince Emery uses a "Mr. Doom" (skull and cross bones) icon throughout the book to highlight messages warning you of common mistakes.
The book is divided into 25 chapters; starting from "Business at the Speed of Light" and ending with "118 Cheap or Free Business Resources on the Net." Throughout the book information sources on the Web are given in bold type. (Want to know about doing business in Japan? Try www.gwjapan.com. Much of it is in English and it is updated weekly. See page 656.)
This book is clearly written and is in the practical, nuts and bolts, hand-on style of writing. He stresses "do a little homework first." An incredible amount of useful and free information is available if you use the search engines and directories listed in the book. He gives one to five star ratings for items in this listing and in other listings. The author gives the current cost figures for the equipment and software required. The range is enormous, from free software to over $100,000.
Know what you need before you leap. In his chapter, "Email: Quickest Bang for Your Buck," he enumerates the cost savings and the communication benefits that the use of email can give your business. At the same time, he notes pitfalls. Email use can overwhelm. Suggestions for controlling this are given. He warns email can be read by others (including competition), altered, and faked (known as spoofing). Encryption and adding digital signatures can be used to secure your email.
Establishing a Web site has been a boom to certain industries, but a flop for others. Lists of both are given. Costs for setting up a Web site can vary greatly. Yet again, do your homework first. Be especially aware that some services that are offered are just plain con operations. He gives a 12 step sequence for building your Web site.
The author stresses the importance of effective writing in order that your Web site succeeds. He notes, for example, Kentucky Fried Chicken sells "finger-lickin' good" and not "dead chicken parts." Also stressed is that the top of a Web page is crucial. This is called "above the fold" and is an expression derived from the newspaper field. When you look at a newspaper vending rack you buy the whole paper based on what you see "above the fold."
There are many seeming small things that can trip up a newcomer to the Internet. For example, writing something in all capital letters is considered shouting. It is wise to reread your messages for possible misinterpretations. We often fail to realize that much of our daily conversation is colored by the tone of our voice and that this is often lost in written communications.
Another area where newcomers may come to grief is "spamming," that is, sending advertising email to people who did not ask for it. This is like a "collect phone call sales pitch." It can result in serious reactions. Your fax machine may be jammed with hate faxes and you might even end up being terminated by your access provider.
Just about everyone in the business world can benefit by reading this book. The Internet has opened the world market to even a one person operation and if you are with a large corporation, your boss, some Friday, may suddenly say "Jones, we need to be on the Internet. Find out how by Monday." Jones, grab this book and read fast.
Excellent Book.......2000-08-18
We all are living now in a global village with a common marketplace. And I think, today everyone knows that business on the Internet is booming. This way there are many fine books available on the market that will assist readers to open up own on-line shop and conduct your home business on the Internet.
Privies edition of the "How to Grow Your Business on the Internet" was one of very the first books about online entrepreneurship I've read. Ant it was really great! But this 3rd edition is much better. It explains the ins and outs of the online business world in plain English -- especially good for beginners.
This is not a computer book, though: if you want to learn about PC's operating systems you'll need additional literature. This excellent book by Vince Emery supplies you with tips on how to market, publicize, and advertise your business online as well as how to generate strategic information using the Internet. A particularly useful chapter uses examples from actual businesses to explain why Internet projects fail and how to make sure yours doesn't.
This is a great place to start! If considering an Internet/Home based business, this is a must read. This is a book for people who take their first steps in the world of Internet entrepreneurship. And I have to say the book does get you thinking and acting. Highly recommend.
A Golden Collection of Internet Business Ideas!.......1998-08-24
It is certainly no joke that business on the Internet is booming! One needs only to surf the Internet to find companies, large and small, offering their products and services to the Internet community. Why not you? There are many fine books available on the market that will assist readers to "open up shop" and conduct business on the Internet. I Know. I've got many of them in my own library. One book that stands out as perhaps the most comprehensive on the subject is How to Grow Your Business on the Internet, authord by Vince Emery. This 3rd edition packs plenty of additional material well worth the cost of buying it.
Emery, a seasoned business pro, sees the Internet as a terrific means to conduct business. He guides his readers along with sound advice and wisdom on obtaining the right computer equipment, the right software, and the right Internet Service Provider. Emery covers a broad range of topics, providing information about Internet business law, financial transactions, intranets, marketing, Web page design and construction, and the caring for customers.
Strengths of the book are found in areas of advertising and promoting one's Website on the Internet. According to Emery, there is more to advertising and promoting than simply dishing out Web pages for the world to see! Emery will help readers determine who their customers are and how to advertise and promote to obtain maximum results Throughout this book, Emery offers his guidance in a concise, straight, forward manner, such as Ten Steps to Internet Success, The Ten Commandments of E-mail, Eleven Steps to Marketing on the Net, and Five Steps to Customer Service and Support, that hit hard to the core of conducting business on the Internet. Emery offers sound business strategies and principles, that if followed, will result in outstanding business success.
Of special interest to readers, Emery includes helpful "danger flags" throughout the book that provide insightful warnings of potential problems that readers may encounter while conducting business on the Internet. Emery offers a number of helpful examples, the actual experiences of himself and others, so that readers may avoid the same problems others have experienced. These are important matters considering the amount of abuse that has transpired on the Internet in the name commerce in recent years!
Of further interest to readers are the recommended reading resources provided for the benefit of the reader. Emery selects many of the finest Internet business books, magazines, newsletters, and online resources available today, saving the reader from the laborious task of having to wade through the vast amount of material around. I suspect that Mr. Emery sneaked into my home and had a look at my library! Emery is a business pro and the guidance he offers is top-notch. Don't conduct business on the Internet without this book! Highly recommended!
The Only Comprehensive Internet Book for Business Managers.......1998-03-15
How to Grow Your Business on the Internet is perhaps the ONLY practical BUSINESS book for the general business manager. It takes a critical look at the business rationale behind using e-mail , newsgroups, web sites, online catalogs. Vince Emery does an excellent job of providing the small business owner or general business manager sound business reasons for using the Internet (in its many different forms), rather than using the old excuse "I have to be on the net - whatever that means - because everyone else is on the net." In addition, there is an Excellent chapter on publicizing your web site. It includes such techniques - which may be familiar to the more experienced, but would be very relevant to the novice - net lurking on newsgroups, e-mail lists/newsletters, extensive use of meta tags, properly coding alt tags, using page titles effectively. I firmly believe that before any business spends a single dollar on e-mail or a web-site, that the manager in charge should read this book. One thing is clear, this book has saved me from making mistakes... mistakes that would have easily cost more than the $20-30 bucks for the book

Impartial review?.......2002-03-15
Chris Yeh is Mr. Kuegler's partner at his consulting firm.
I would question the objectivity of the previous review.
Please also place no credence in my rating of five stars, I have yet to receive my copy.
A clear and practical guide to an often-confusing industry........2001-06-19
The web advertising and marketing is extremely confusing. Almost everything I've ever been told has been a lie. In sharp contrast, Kuegler's book tells hard truths, backed up with very specific examples. He focuses on companies and techniques that have flown below the mainstream radar screen, and delivers information that any marketer or entrepreneur can use.
