A Great Disapontment.......2006-10-26
I purchased this book with great expectations. It is richly illustrated with rare photographs of obsolete aircraft soldiering on in an important area of operations. The writing and research was excellent, which I have come to expect from Mr. Hagedorn. However, one of these rare photographs depicted a nude strip-club dancer. Others depicted aircraft with explicit 'nose art'. When I read a military history book, it is my expectation that I (or my son) will not be subjected to objectionable photos. I returned the book for a refund. Sorry Dan.
Easily the best book on this topic, and a good read.......1998-04-13
It seems odd that the major campaigns of World War II which were fought in the Americas should be neglected by historians, but this is certainly the case. Laudably, in recent years somewhat more attention has been paid to the war in Alaska and the Aleutians, but both the defense of the Panama Canal and the intense antisubmarine campaign in the Caribbean are still little-known. Mr. Hagedorn's book goes a long way toward filling this vacuum. Particularly striking is the case he makes for the "useless" Douglas B-18, "the bomber the Air Corps bought when it should have bought the B-17," to paraphrase popular sentiment. In fact the B-18 met the Air Corps specification for which it was designed, and gave yeoman service in a role for which it wasn't: antisubmarine warfare. Its crews dealt with such physical hazards as the fickle Caribbean and Central American weather (without weather radar) and a tropical climate (without air conditioning), and the keenly felt frustration of a low priority for personnel, equipment and supplies. Mr. Hagedorn's account of how they overcame these obstacles and prevailed makes for an absorbing read. I recommend this book highly.
Story of a neglected chapter of World War Two history told........1997-11-27
Historian Dan Hagedorn has spent a great deal of time combing through the multitude of files in various archives. That work shines in "Alae Supra Canalem". It is a well researched and organized book. After giving a detailed overview of the development of American air power in central america from the birth of aviation, Hagedorn recounts the near-panic rush to protect the strategic Panama Canal from attack and sabotage in the 1940's. He outlines the strength, weaponry and stations of every unit. Fears of an invasion fleet coming over the horizon at the war's beginning are related in directness that gives respect to the missions of those who were there. The crucial impact of this force's fight against German submarines in the Caribbean is recounted in detail that is totally missing in other histories. This book brings a unique angle to the Second World War. And it will be sure to bring back many memories for the men and women who served their country in that theatre of war. It certainly did for my grandfather; he was delighted that his contribution to the war effort had finally been chronicled. Numerous photos of airmen, their planes and where they lived and worked were gleaned from both government files and veterans, which gives an inside look at the subject.
Book Description
More than just a dive guide, this full-color book features painting, high-quality photography and stories about the most spectacular shipwrecks of Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao. Informative sidebars tell scuba divers how to locate and dive these popular wrecks. Included, a special chapter on the wrecks of Las Aves, Venezuela.
Book Description
In his latest photoessay, Bruce McMillan explores the lives of the Greater Flamingos, the world's largest and most colorful of birds. These magnificent creatures inhabit the desert-like Caribbean island of Bonaire, fifty miles north of Venezuela. The author shows graphically, in words and pictures, how Greater Flamingos have adapted to their seemingly inhospitable environment, how they raise their young, how they come by their brilliant coloring, and convert salt to fresh water for drinking. Here, with vibrant photographs and wondrous detail, is a testament to the beauty and adaptability of this wonderful bird in its wild and natural state. In his individual style, Bruce McMillan weaves together the wonders of nature with fascinating facts, creating a story about one of our rarest and most unusual birds.

This book makes a great splash!.......2000-05-18
Excellent photography brings to life the character, the brilliance, and the lifestyle of the flamingo. Photos are the heart of the essay with accompanying text providing specific information and brief "editiorial" comments. A must-have for flamingo lovers.

Better off with other guide books.......2007-05-15
I have just returned from Curacao. I found this book to be a complete dud. The only thing it helped me with were the guide to beaches up on the northern part of the island. It said nothing about what is one of the best resorts in the Caribbean, Kura Hulanda and it's Slave Museum. Chech out Kula Hulanda on the web. This book also said nothing about a departure tax at the airport while it seems to address alot of fluff.
You would do better with other guide books. I have not been to Aruba or Bonaire so I can't say if the book is better for those two islands but I would bet not.

Are You Serious?.......2002-12-20
I would bet a thousand chip at the casino that all of these perfect reviews were written by people who are affiliated with the guide and who stand to profit from it. Tell me I'm wrong. Look at the language in these reviews, it screams plant.

Book Description
The Caribbean ranks among the earliest and most completely globalized regions in the world. From the first moment Europeans set foot on the islands to the present, products, people, and ideas have made their way back and forth between the region and other parts of the globe with unequal but inexorable force. An inventory of some of these unprecedented multidirectional exchanges, this volume provides a measure of, as well as a model for, new scholarship on globalization in the region.
Ten essays by leading scholars in the field of Caribbean studies identify and illuminate important social and cultural aspects of the region as it seeks to maintain its own identity against the unrelenting pressures of globalization. These essays examine cultural phenomena in their creolized forms--from sports and religion to music and drink--as well as the Caribbean manifestations of more universal trends--from racial inequality and feminist activism to indebtedness and economic uncertainty. Throughout, the volume points to the contending forces of homogeneity and differentiation that define globalization and highlights the growing agency of the Caribbean peoples in the modern world.

Book Description
Robert Soublette and his son Tito were photographers in Curaçao who between them captured the development, changes, and the people of the then colony on photographic plates from around 1869 until about 1923. Their work has been extensively used to illustrate articles and other publications about Curaçao but until now there has been no book about these remarkable early photographers.
The Soublette's were portrait photographers of real quality and also showed great compositional skill in their countless photographs of the city of Willemstad and its harbour. Many of their townscapes survive in the hands of collectors as postcards. Fortunately a large body of the work of the Soublettes has also been preserved, due to the foresight of the former Viennese photographer, Fred Fischer.
The firm of Soublette et Fils were accorded the special status of Court Photographer by H.M. Queen Wilhelmina for the contribution of Robert Soublette to a special album of photographs of the Dutch Antilles that was presented to the Queen in 1904. This gave them the right to display the royal crest as holders of the royal warrant and the crest became a landmark where streams of people from the harbour ferries and the Queen Emma bridge converged.
This book is published as part of the celebrations of 500 years of written history of Curaçao, known as "Project Curaçao 500" and an exhibition of the photographs of the Soublettes being held to mark this in Curaçao and Amsterdam. Its publication has been made possible by the generous support of Citco Group Limited, SFT Bank NV and Dagblad Amigoe.
Book Description
The Caribbean offers a huge variety of architectural styles that have been influenced by the many European settlers who colonized the islands, as well as the Africans, Amerindians, and East Indians who were brought to the region as laborers. Some styles are unique to individual islands such as the chattel houses in Barbados or the urban townhouses in St Croix. Throughout the region there is significant evidence of a strong Georgian influence--government buildings, churches, libraries, and other public buildings as well as the large plantation houses. In this book, Suzanne Gordon and Anne Hersh take the reader on a guided tour of the architectural highlights of the Eastern Caribbean, from Anguilla to Trinidad.
Illustrated with detailed photographs of buildings and architectural features and accompanied by maps and architectural plans, this is a knowledgeable and interesting account of the development and influences of construction and design in the Caribbean.
Customer Reviews:
An exceptionally useful and beautiful work of art!.......2006-03-23
This is an absolutely fascinating book on the Caribbean - the content, the writing and the photography are all superb.
In addition to its stated purpose of being an architectural guide, it surpasses most travel books in the useful information it imparts to anyone visiting this delightful area or wishing to learn more about its rich culture and heritage. Aside from the stunningly beautiful color photography, the maps and drawings are very helpful and tastefully displayed. This certainly is my new, indispensable reference source on the Eastern Caribbean. I'm amazed at how much relevant and useful information the authors managed to present in one book. It's both beautiful and impressive and a delight to read. I'm definitely ordering many more copies as gifts for friends.

Famous walls; incredibly clear, calm, warm waters; 58 dive sites including Klein Bonaire.
Customer Reviews:
Terrific Book!.......2006-02-24
Very pleased with the content of this book! There are extensive details about the location, underwater terrain and marine life of 58 of Bonaire's dive sites. There is also a section on lodging, restaurants, dive centers, grocery shopping... right down to where to get the best local ice cream! We're diving Bonaire in April and I've already chosen some of those must-dive sites!
Information is too old to be useful.......2003-05-12
This book was published in 1991. Unfortunately in November 1999, Hurricane Lenny inflicted a massive underwater storm surge on Bonaire that destroyed many of the dive & snorkel sites referenced in this book. Many sites have nothing to look at until 30' depth. I also found this book to be lacking in local color.
The best book on Bonaire diving & snorkeling is "Shore Diving Made Easy" that you can buy for US$10 at the island dive shops. It is up to date with recommended entry/exit points and suggested landmarks while diving.
Good review of dive sites.......2003-01-11
I bought this book before going to Bonaire in the summer of 2002. Our group of 4 used it extensively during our stay there and found it very useful in describing the different dive sites. The book does a very good job of describing how to find the shore diving sites, where to park, how to enter the water and what to expect in the water. There is a good map and good broad overviews of the island, the culture, marine life, hotels and resturants. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone planning to go to Bonaire.
Not bad, but there are better guides available.......2002-09-30
I bought both this book and the Schnabel "Diving and Snorkeling Guide to Bonaire." This book was by far the better of the two, with more information (both diving and non-diving), excellent pictures, and just overall a better guide to diving on Bonaire. If you only take one guide, this should be it.
An excellent book from two experts........2001-09-12
Many people go to Bonaire for their vacation without visiting either Aruba or Curacao (the other two islands in the group known as the "ABC Islands"), so it is nice to see Bonaire as a separate Diving Guide and not included as an afterthought.
"Diving Bonaire" measures 10" x 7" and is another guide in the medium size format favoured by Aqua Quest. These particular publishers set high standards and demand all contributing authors/photographers maintain those standards at all times. This is, therefore, another worthy addition to the series.
The book is well laid out and includes a liberal sprinkling of high-quality photographs which bring colour to almost every page. Commencing with a brief history of Bonaire's past and present, the book then goes on to include all that useful information required by any potential visitor - currency, climate, getting there, entry & exit requirements, telephones, shopping, and time difference. Chapter 2 concentrates on accommodations and diving facilities and this is followed by a further chapter devoted to dining.
Chapter 4 is an overview of what the diver can expect to find underwater. This really sets the scene and includes such important information as temperature, visibility, depths, moorings, reefs, boat dives, shores dives, skill levels, equipment and more besides.
In chapter 6 we get down to specifics. This commences with a map of Bonaire and Klein Bonaire across two-pages on which are marked no fewer than 56 principle dive sites. Curiously, this is followed by brief notes on 58 sites and this gives rise to my one minor criticism - namely that Nos 57 and 58 (rated as being "For Professionals Only") are not shown on the map.
With a final chapter devoted to Marine Life, the book then concludes with a number of Appendices containing that all-important emergency information, useful numbers and a list of diving facilities.
Altogether, this book contains all the information the potential visitor to Bonaire will require when contemplating such a trip. As I said, only one minor criticism, but not enough to deprive these authors of a well-earned 5 star rating because they have used the word "guide" to the best possible effect. This is a first rate diving guide to Bonaire. All the information is there to allow you to consider carefully whether or not Bonaire will be your next diving destination. If you decide against visiting this splendid island, it will not be through any failing within this book.
