Book Description

ATCs are all the rage!

Making artist trading cards (ATCs) is a hugely popular activity for artists. Originally a paper/collage-based art form, ATCs have caught on with crafters working in a range of mediums and are now just as popular among fabric and mixed-media artists. ATCs are mini art works, the size of a playing card, often created as limited editions. The back of each card contains the artist's name and contact information. The idea behind the cards is to make them and then give, trade, or share them with others. This collection inspires with 1,000 original cards in a beautiful pageant of color, composition, and creative use of materials. The book also includes a special section devoted to explaining what ATCs are, how to get started, and includes some exciting technique information. Curated by Patricia Bolton, founder and editor-in-chief of two of the most exciting creative magazines on the newsstands, the book meets the Quarry Books mission of offering artistic and challenging new ideas to traditional paper artists, scrapbookers, mixed-media artists, and quilters by merging paper, fabric, and surface embellishment through experimentation and discovery.

Great layout of the book, colours are great.I felt there were too many fabrics used, and may be more paper products would be nice.

I am VERY pleased with the product, the service, the safe trading, and the time frame for delivery.
You are my first line of contact when looking for a good price and good product in books I wish to source.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing. .......2007-08-24

I am a huge devotee of creating and collecting ATCs and was really looking forward to this book. I was more than a little disappointed. The cards included weren't among the most amazing or innovative I've seen, and there were no instructions as to how to create them. You'd be better off cruising around the internet and saving your money for art supplies.

Excellent resource for those just getting into this new hobby as well as those who are veterans. So many inspirational ideas and great tutorials. If I only had one book on ATC s this would be the one.

If you are interested in ATCs you will really enjoy this book. Beautiful photography of so many different styles and designs. I found it very inspirating. Patricia Bolton is the publisher of Quilting Arts and Cloth.Paper.Scissors, two of the best magazines of all time. Check them out!

Book Description

Arms traders and sophisticated individual investors with the tools they need to play the markets successfully
Many traders believe that they must perform at least one trade every day, no matter what. However, as expert Price Headley clearly demonstrates in this groundbreaking book, not only is that assumption false, it can also be dangerous. He shows why focusing too narrowly on the daily ebb and flow of the markets minimizes a trader's chances for the big returns. He explains why maximum results are achieved by identifying the big market trends and riding them for all their worth. Headley explores the major market indicators-including the popular CBOE Volatility Index, Nasdaq 100, Rydex Mutual Fund Flows, and Equity Put/Call Ratio-and shows readers how to use them to identify the stocks that are about to take off. Emphasizing the aggressive use of options, he also empowers investors with stock selection techniques and options strategies that work in virtually every type of market.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good book but.......2007-06-27

The book contents is OK but it is not a thorough analysis of the option strategies and techniques.

2 out of 5 stars It's ok........2007-06-27

Some of the nuggets are more like pebbles. The book seems more like an infomercial to sign up for his picks through his website/stock picking services. If you're looking for real tips to reading the market, I'd say check out some of J. Cramer's books. Cramer isn't perfect, but who is? At least Cramer tells it like he sees it. If Eliot Spitzer likes Cramer, then he can't be that bad!

4 out of 5 stars Worth the cost - Psychology and Money Management are the keys to trading well.......2006-11-15

I haven't had any experience personally with the Bigtrends advisory services, but I can say that this book was worth my time to read. It's a bit heavy for me at first on all the systems used, but I found the final chapter on the psychology and money management alone to be well worth the cost of the book. That's where I always seem to lose my money in the market, by getting too high or too low (at the wrong times, of course!). It appears that his systems are designed to profit from these emotional fear and greed panics of the rest of the crowd.

Clearly this is not a book for beginners, but since I had already gotten my feet wet in trading over the last couple of years, I definitely have some ideas I look forward to applying from this book. The Acceleration Bands indicator (appears different than Bollinger bands) looks very promising to me, and I may also now try my hand at options (on a small scale at first)!

1 out of 5 stars Horrible experience with Big Trends advisory service.......2005-08-15

After reading this book you might go check out their website and you'll see that they offer a few advisory services. Don't be fooled by the track records they email you, I lost thousands of dollars being SUCKERED into a non-refundable yearly membership fee to one of their services only to lose a lot more following their advisory emails. I quit following their stock pick recommendations about 3 months into the service with 9 more months left and watched their picks for almost a year. THEY DID SO HORRIBLE, I WOULD LITERALY DO BETTER PICKING STOCKS OUT OF A HAT, not to mention the horrible customer service. They did not respond my emails when I had questions or concerns about what is going on with these recommendations.

1 out of 5 stars Very Bad Customer Service from BigTrends.......2004-12-31

i bot the book and later subscribed to its Bigtrends newsltter service and i had the worst experience ever in my whole trading career. I wrote to them several times for problems i had in its service and i received no replies. They charged me upfront for thousands of dollars and no refund despite cancellations after two weeks.

This is one newsletter that i would not recommend...trust me ! there is no customer service at all !!

Book Description

Over the next few years, the proprietary trading and hedge fund industries will migrate largely to automated trade selection and execution systems. Indeed, this is already happening. While several finance books provide C++ code for pricing derivatives and performing numerical calculations, none approaches the topic from a system design perspective. This book will be divided into two sectionsprogramming techniques and automated trading system ( ATS ) technologyand teach financial system design and development from the absolute ground up using Microsoft Visual C++.NET 2005. MS Visual C++.NET 2005 has been chosen as the implementation language primarily because most trading firms and large banks have developed and continue to develop their proprietary algorithms in ISO C++ and Visual C++.NET provides the greatest flexibility for incorporating these legacy algorithms into working systems. Furthermore, the .NET Framework and development environment provide the best libraries and tools for rapid development of trading systems.
The first section of the book explains Visual C++.NET 2005 in detail and focuses on the required programming knowledge for automated trading system development, including object oriented design, delegates and events, enumerations, random number generation, timing and timer objects, and data management with STL.NET and .NET collections. Furthermore, since most legacy code and modeling code in the financial markets is done in ISO C++, this book looks in depth at several advanced topics relating to managed/unmanaged/COM memory management and interoperability. Further, this book provides dozens of examples illustrating the use of database connectivity with ADO.NET and an extensive treatment of SQL and FIX and XML/FIXML. Advanced programming topics such as threading, sockets, as well as using C++.NET to connect to Excel are also discussed at length and supported by examples.
The second section of the book explains technological concerns and design concepts for automated trading systems. Specifically, chapters are devoted to handling real-time data feeds, managing orders in the exchange order book, position selection, and risk management. A .dll is included in the book that will emulate connection to a widely used industry API ( Trading Technologies, Inc.s XTAPI ) and provide ways to test position and order management algorithms. Design patterns are presented for market taking systems based upon technical analysis as well as for market making systems using intermarket spreads.
As all of the chapters revolve around computer programming for financial engineering and trading system development, this book will educate traders, financial engineers, quantitative analysts, students of quantitative finance and even experienced programmers on technological issues that revolve around development of financial applications in a Microsoft environment and the construction and implementation of real-time trading systems and tools.

* Teaches financial system design and development from the ground up using Microsoft Visual C++.NET 2005.
* Provides dozens of examples illustrating the programming approaches in the book
* Chapters are supported by screenshots, equations, sample Excel spreadsheets, programming code and interactive CDROM

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars great book for wall street developers.......2007-06-29

Unlike some other comments about this book, the intended readers are serious developers who have not started or just begining to use .Net 2005 framework. That is why some readers do not like this book.

A pure programmer do not need to read this book.
A pure quant strategist do not need this book.
A network specialist do not need this book.

It is only good for the intended readers.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource to build Automatic Trading Systems.......2007-04-22

I read some of the other reviews and was moved to write my own evaluation as those reviews were mistreating this book.

This book is NOT fiction nor is it a comprehensive reference on C++.Net. so for someone trying to read this book from cover to cover will not feel like adding much value. Also the title says it clearly that the book includes an introduction to VC++.Net (just want to stress that the book is not meant to teach you the language in and out)

The value in this book is to understand the typical challenges that financial trading systems offer and some really insightful examples on how to solve them. This book deals with everyday problems that any programmer will face when building his/her own trading system (Automated/semi-automated). There is a lot of good advice on Building Automatic Trading Systems all compiled into one resource.

Like I mentioned before the book is not a comprehensive reference on C++.Net(Use MSDN for that) and neither is it verbose, but simply a bridge between building trading systems and programming. The introduction to VC++.Net is a quick read even if you have no or basic programming skills and only serves as an introduction to the language with a quick reference of the concepts.

I love this book and appreciate some of the issues that it addresses. It also better prepared me for the job that I got after taking Professor Van Vliet's class and using this book for the same.

I recommend this book for all those developers (or beginners) who are dealing with financial markets and have the need to build ATS.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent CONCISE Treatment of C++.Net.......2007-04-13

I feel I am qualified to review this book as I have been a student of Professor Van Vliet's at IIT-Chicago. I have taken his courses in ANSI C++,VB.Net,and developing automated trading systems using C++.Net. I took the course in C++.Net/Automated Trading Systems using the notes that were the basis for this book.

A few of the previous reviews were way off the mark in my opinion. One of Professor Van Vliet's strengths and approach to programming is to develop concepts through simple examples. In this book, as in all his classes, he gives small but complete programs to learn concepts. Most books, e.g. Deitel, introduce concepts with 2-3 page programs where you get lost in what you are trying to learn. Van Vliet emphasizes that programming is learned by doing, not just by reading. If you just plan to read the book and not actually implement the programs then maybe it's value is limited. But this is not how most people REALLY learn programming. You have to get your hands dirty.

Previous reviews are way off the mark in terms of substance as well. You just have to go to MSDN's documentation on C++.Net to see that Van Vliet includes a lot of helpful information that is hard to find in other books and on the NET. For example, for those who care to pay attention, he does an excellent treatment on how to get to methods in objects stored in hashtables and sorted lists. Almost all other discussions of hashtables use very primitive hashtables where you only store a key and a simple value (like an integer or string) . Van Vliet actually shows ways, for example, to create a Stock Class with all the attributes of a stock and then store the stock objects in a hashtable that would represent a portfolio. (this is not the example in the book but he clearly shows you how to do this). Then he shows you how to get at the methods using a dynamic cast or static cast (with the advent of generics in VS 2005 there are now even better ways in some instances).

To give further evidence of his building block approach and the substance in the book, Van Vliet towards the end of the book develops a single-threaded algorithmic trading system and then uses a producer-consumer semaphore model to show you how to create a multi-threaded algorithmic trading system. Where else can you find this in the literature? He even created his own API, Trader API, that is very similar to that of Trading Technologies's XTAPI, so programmers can learn how to connect and use an API.

Finally, through my study with Van Vliet I have been able to write multi-threaded trading programs using XTAPI, write a stat arb program for equity trading that searches a large database of equities, write technical trading systems, and write factor model programs for equity trading. In large part because of what I learned from Professor Van Vliet at IIT I have been able to be employed by a local hedge fund. Whenever I program his books are with me for reference purposes.

1 out of 5 stars Unreadable...........2007-04-02

Strong regret that I spent 80$ on this book. The backcover said this book was suitable for people who wanted to learn c++.net with a focus on trading systems, however the intro to the language itself is very very light.

It starts directly with pages of code (that you can find on the cd...) explaining how to manage threads, processes, time etc etc.

I had the feeling that this book has no real beginning nor real ending and that chapters can be all mixed up, it won't change anything.
On the other side, I am maybe too beginner for it. Maybe this suitable for people who want to transfer their system from one language to c++.net.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for beginners to intermediate develepers.......2007-03-23

I thought this was an excellent book for beginner and intermediate developers. It takes you through the building blocks necessary to create a fully functioning automated trading system. Especially useful for programmers in other languages that are looking to transfer their code to C++.net. I've have 7 years of experience in financial programming and many of the problems addressed in this book, I deal with on a daily basis.

5 out of 5 stars Solid trading book.......2007-10-23

For large traders and institutional traders who need to move large volume and order flow, this book offers multiple entry and exit strategies and tactics. Out of necessity, these traders have to scale in and out of their positions to dampen the immediate effect of their trading on the markets. Even for private retail traders, this book conveys choice of logical set-ups to incorporate into their trading operations. Overall, I feel that this book deserves your attention.

4 out of 5 stars Great book - very intense.......2007-08-27

I've been looking for a book like this for a while. I first came across Bill Williams through the Metastock indicators and the Expert System. After loading an expert called "PS Fractal Trading System 2" I was amazed at the signals.
Having read through the book - I have the following quibble. There is a huge difference in the parameters of the alligator in what comes with Metastock (v9 and v10) and what the book gives. The book says the green line is 13 bar smoothed average offset 8 bars into future. Likewise the red is 8 bar offset 5, and the green is 5 bar offset 3. However this does not correspond to the Metastock indicator he provides. For the curious, the Metastock ones referred to in page 206 of book have the following values: Green: 9 period EMA of Median offset 3. Red: 15 period offset 5, and Blue 25 period offset 8

5 out of 5 stars It is the right book at the right time.......2007-07-06

This book has methods to get buy signals before the lows and sell signals before the highs. This will help one sell into strength and buy into weakness. It has helped me get my positions off. I have recommended this book to all of my trading friends. It will take careful study to fully understand it. This book is original, all mechanical and all objective. The three wise men make up very powerful trading tools.

4 out of 5 stars Good book.......2007-01-09

Another great book from Bill Williams!
Interesting for trend trading and for good living.

5 out of 5 stars Bill Williams is the REAL DEAL.......2006-12-18

I am a BIG believer in Bill Williams and his body of work.

I have personally met with Bill, taken his home study course and even attended a private tutorial. Bill is the real deal. He is a *highly* profitable trader and Bill trades EXACTLY like he describes in his books (simplified over time, so Trading Chaos, 2nd Ed. is the LATEST and most refined method).

If you just want to trade with no other background information, Buy Trading Chaos, 2nd Edition (not this book) and start with chapter seven. When you get to the end of the book, you'll say, "That's it?!?! Than can't be it!" That's what I said. I then went on to take his home study course (13 weeks) and then went to a private tutorial. 95% of the methodology is IN THE BOOK! The more advanced stuff is for those who are scaling into positions and want more aggressive money management techniques.

Who am I to say this works? I started trading Bill's techniques from scratch. In LESS than 6 months I was up 95% in a medium sized account. I found some like-minded investors and we started our own Hedge Fund (more specifically, a commodity pool). I called Bill personally and he spoke with me at length about how I should flow into and out of my positions, etc. He went far above and beyond the call of duty. I cannot speak to how well my Pool is doing (not legal to disclose - considered solicitation of investors), so I cannot give figures of returns for the Pool.

Buy Trading Chaos 2nd Edition and then buy "New Trading Dim mentions" (his second book) and read chapters 9 - 11. Those chapters will give you more ideas of the SCOPE of just what is possible when you simplify your trading and align it with natural market tendencies (chaos principles).

Good luck and Good Trading!

Book Description

Acclaim for Bernie Schaeffer's expert approach to options trading.

"Bernie Schaeffer's penchant for contrary investing is terrific, and his market calls on that strategy have been excellent. He shows how to apply contrary thinking-and many other types of 'expectational analysis'-to option strategies. All option traders should enjoy reading this book." -Lawrence G. McMillan President, McMillan Analysis Corp. Author, Options as a Strategic Investment and McMillan on Options.

"A superb book that will benefit both stock and options investors. It blends technical analysis, fundamentals, investor psychology, and strategy to come up with an excellent approach to the markets. A good read for the investor seeking new trading ideas in today's fast moving markets." -Leo Fasciocco Stock Market Columnist, Investor's Business Daily.

"A breath of fresh air for options traders. Most options books are textbook in nature. Schaeffer cuts right to the chase and provides solid ideas on how to use options effectively for both conservative and trading-oriented investors. It's innovative and fresh. Get a copy." -Thomas J. Dorsey President, Dorsey Wright & Associates Author, Point & Figure Charting.

When nationally renowned options expert Bernie Schaeffer talks, everyone listens. A "Market Maven" on CNBC, a frequent guest on CNN, and a top-rated Timer Digest market timer for the past decade, he has also been a featured speaker at numerous investment conferences. His views on the stock market and the economy are regularly quoted in the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, Barron's, and Investor's Business Daily. Thousands of subscribers eagerly await each issue of his Option Advisor newsletter, and when he distills his decades of knowledge and experience-as he does in this remarkable book-savvy investors everywhere pay close attention.

In The Option Advisor: Wealth-Building Strategies Using Equity and Index Options, Schaeffer offers his own carefully tested, prudent, and profitable strategies for trading options. He begins by dispelling outdated folklore and beliefs about the options world, and reveals instead how options can be used as an inexpensive, leveraged vehicle for profiting from the movement in an equity. With clarity and logic, he explains the basic principles of options trading, emphasizing, in particular, why options cannot be traded like stocks-a very common and potentially very costly mistake.

Schaeffer delves into the psychology of options trading, demonstrating how to distinguish between "high" and "low" expectation stocks, how to measure sentiment, and how to master the valued Contrary Opinion Theory for successful trading. He shares his wealth-building techniques for selecting the right stocks, assessing risk, managing your options portfolio, and, most important, for reading market timing indicators. What The Option Advisor boils down to is expert guidance on managing your money, while avoiding the most common errors of options trading.

In a detailed section on applications, Schaeffer gives you practical, hands-on advice on how to use a full array of real-world trading strategies, including quick trades, aggressive trading strategies, conservative approaches, portfolio protection, and the increasingly popular Long-term Equity AnticiPation Securities (LEAPS). With characteristic thoroughness, Schaeffer also offers invaluable information on selecting an options broker, opening an options trading account, and doing research on the Internet.

From the novice to the experienced investor, The Option Advisor offers a gold mine of information on how to achieve success in options trading.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Schaeffer's Strategies Don't Work.......2007-07-03

As tracked by Mark Hulbert, following Schaeffer's Options Advisor newsletter's advice would have resulted in a compounded annual loss of 4.7% per year over a period of time when the market GAINED 12.7% per year. While his newsletter has not lost money in recent years it has trailed the S&P 500 over 1-, 3-, 5-, 10-, and 15-year time periods.

Is that kind of advice worth paying for and worth spending your time to read? I think not.

5 out of 5 stars get your highlighter, you can find something of value.......2006-09-09

Mr. Schafer writes about several different option strategies. More importantly, he covers several tools you can use ranging from magazine covers to VIX. He also touches on the "Greeks" and money management. The first 130 pages covers the tools and basics of options and the second half of the book covers specific option strategies and more details on how to spot a trade.

There are many black and white charts throughout the book detailing the specific indicators and what they may look like when you want to buy or sell. The examples are clear and easy to understand. I had to read some paragraphs a couple of times to understand which I would expect when learning a new concept.

Each time I go through this book, I am reinforced of what I know and often pick up details I have missed in the past. There is a lot of good information in this book. Someone who wants to increase their knowledge regarding technical analysis and broaden their horizons can gain something from this book.

1 out of 5 stars Worst Newsletter Service.......2005-06-04

The service is a sure way to loose money. I consider myself as a novice investor but I can do better on my own than following his advise. Talking to service rep is waste of your time and effort. The service rep will listen to you but do nothing.
The research company refuses to refund unused portion. What a nice TRAP. I wish I had read the reviews over here before I threw my hard earned money.

4 out of 5 stars Great Technical Analysis.......2002-04-23

Only 50% of the book is about options. The other 50% concentrates on how to use technical analysis to find winning stocks. It is probably the best book for the beginner and intermediate trader. With the Technical analysis, it can be used for both stocks and options. It belongs on every trader's shelf. The reason it didn't get a "5 Star" is that he really doesn't go into closing a position if the trade is going the wrong way. I pretty much had to learn that on my own. I have read it cover-to-cover 3 times and certain chapters at least 6 times.

4 out of 5 stars Super.......2001-10-29

This book is more than an option book. Actually it concentrates more on the technical analysis than options. It tells you what to look for in the charts, option volume and oprn interest, and then which option strategy to use. This is by far my favorite book on stocks and options.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Interesting reading on options.......2007-06-27

This is not a textbook of option strategies and option trading. However, it makes for interesting and educative reading. If you want to learn the trade strategies in depth, I recommend the companion book by Lawrence McMillan "Options as a Strategic Investment".

5 out of 5 stars A ponderous, insightful guide to options strategy, but not for everybody.......2007-06-12

I loved this book, written in a language that is easy to understand for non native speaking, like me.
A few points:

- this book is not for absolute beginners. Mr. McMillan indeed provides the basis for understanding options and the most known strategies, like spreads, strangle or similar. I would however direct the reader who is unaware of the basis to the other ponderous work of Mr. McMillan, Options as a strategic investment
- McMillan drives the willing reader to a thorough understanding of concepts/tools often misused, like volatility, put/call ratio, etc. Specifically, the third chapter is a truly inestimable (at least in my opinion) key to harness the predictive power of options.
- This is a no-hype book, if compared with the average of the sector. Mr. McMillan does not indulge or indulges only with tasteful sobriety in describing or promoting his professional services.
In conclusion:
Though if this book is not an easy reading, I would strongly urge the serious professional to read and re-read this book. It is really one of the few eye-opener books I've ever read in this domain.

5 out of 5 stars Full of bright trading ideas.......2007-03-27

This book is a comprehensive guide to a lot of trading strategies, not at all limited to the use of options.

I liked the fact that the author used a lot of real life examples, that helped to understand the strategies and sometimes the mistakes you can make

5 out of 5 stars McMillan on options.......2007-01-10

Very well written and illustrated book on options and how they work. A must have for any serious option trader.

5 out of 5 stars Not for beginners .......2006-12-17

Some of the negative reviews sounded like they wanted a short book that said "Do the following and you will be very rich very quick". Guess what, that book doesn't exist and will never exist. Options are very useful if used properly but to use them properly you need a deep understanding of risk and the mechanics of options. These concepts are mathematical in nature and so is this book. For a variety of reasons just buying a bunch of options is a suckers game as many have learned, but used to reduce risk as a hedge is a different matter. McMillan's other book Options as a Strategic Investment would be the place to start learning. This advanced text explains many things professionals are doing and gives insight to why the markets behave as they do. If you want to get involved with options you need to understand this book thoroughly.

Book Description

The Fourth Edition is again based on Robert Kimbrough's meticulously re-edited text. Missing words have been restored and the entire novel has been repunctuated in accordance with Conrad's style. The result is the first published version of Heart of Darkness that allows readers to hear Marlow's voice as Conrad heard it when he wrote the story.

" Backgrounds and Contexts" provides readers with a generous collection of maps and photographs that bring the Belgian Congo to life. Textual materials, topically arranged, address nineteenth-century views of imperialism and racism and include autobiographical writings by Conrad on his life in the Congo. New to the Fourth Edition is an excerpt from Adam Hochschild's recent book, King Leopold's Ghost, as well as writings on race by Hegel, Darwin, and Galton.

" Criticism" includes a wealth of new materials, including nine contemporary reviews and assessments of Conrad and Heart of Darkness and twelve recent essays by Chinua Achebe, Peter Brooks, Daphne Erdinast-Vulcan, Edward Said, and Paul B. Armstrong, among others. Also new to this edition is a section of writings on the connections between Heart of Darkness and the film Apocalypse Now by Louis K. Greiff, Margot Norris, and Lynda J. Dryden.

A Chronology and Selected Bibliography are also included.

About the Series: No other series of classic texts equals the caliber of the Norton Critical Editions. Each volume combines the most authoritative text available with the comprehensive pedagogical apparatus necessary to appreciate the work fully. Careful editing, first-rate translation, and thorough explanatory annotations allow each text to meet the highest literary standards while remaining accessible to students. Each edition is printed on acid-free paper and every text in the series remains in print. 5 out of 5 stars "Mistah Kurtz--he dead." An influential work on five 20th century seminal works.......2007-10-21

I read this book for a graduate Humanities course. Buy this edition, it is the best with great critical essays. Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness, written in 1899 is a seminal work about the ills of colonialism, as well as a postmodern look at the subject of mankind. Conrad's book had a crucial influence on five important works of the twentieth century: J. G. Frazier's book The Golden Bough. Jessie L. Weston's book From Ritual to Romance, T. S. Elliott's poem the Waste Land, Joseph Campbell's Hero with a Thousand Faces, and Francis Ford Coppolla's movie Apocalypse Now, screenplay by John Milius, was based on Conrad's book. Another interesting fact is that this work was read by Orson Welle's Mercury Theater Players on the radio and was to be his first movie. After doing some work on it he abandoned the project to do Citizen Kane! I would have loved to of seen what Welles could have done with this story. Conrad's story is so riveting in part, because he himself served as a riverboat captain. High school teachers and college professors who have discussed this book in thousands of classrooms over the years tend to do so in terms of Freud, Jung, and Nietzsche; of classical myth, Victorian innocence, and original sin; of postmodernism, postcolonialism, and poststructuralism.

Just a taste of the plot reels you in! Marlow, the narrator of Heart of Darkness and Conrad's alter ego, is hired by an ivory-trading company to sail a steamboat up an unnamed river whose shape on the map resembles "an immense snake uncoiled, with its head in the sea, its body at rest curving afar over a vast country and its tail lost in the depths of the land" (8). His destination is a post where the company's brilliant, ambitious star agent, Mr. Kurtz, is stationed. Kurtz has collected legendary quantities of ivory, but, Marlow learns along the way, is also rumored to have sunk into unspecified savagery. Marlow's steamer survives an attack by blacks and picks up a load of ivory and the ill Kurtz; Kurtz, talking of his grandiose plans, dies on board as they travel, downstream.

Sketched with only a few bold strokes, Kurtz's image has nonetheless remained in the memories of millions of readers: the lone white agent far up the great river, with his dreams of grandeur, his great store of precious ivory, and his fiefdom carved out of the African jungle. Perhaps more than anything, we remember Marlow, on the steamboat, looking through binoculars at what he thinks are ornamental knobs atop the fence posts in front of Kurtz's house and then finding that each is "black, dried, sunken, with closed eyelids-a head that seemed to sleep at the top of that pole, and with the shrunken dry lips showing a narrow white line of the teeth" (57).

I especially became interested in Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness from the movie Apocalypse Now. There is a scene in the movie that shows Colonel Kurtz's nightstand in his cave. T. S. Elliott's poem the Waste Land is one of three books on the nightstand. The other two are Jessie L. Weston's book From Ritual to Romance, and J. G. Frazier's book The Golden Bough. Anyone wanting to understand the movie Apocalypse Now, especially the character of Colonel Kurtz, and what Milius and Copolla are trying to tell their audience need to read these three books as well as Conrad's Heart of Darkness!

As a graduate student reading in philosophy and history I recommend this book for anyone interested in literature, myth, history, philosophy, religion and fans of Apocalypse Now.

5 out of 5 stars The Devil Froze From Fear.......2007-08-08

Daytime scents of nightmare horrors. Man and his insane ways - bushman, postman, commoner, who to blame? Unless you are familiar with the background of this stunning novel do yourself a favor and get the Norton Critical Edition. For a century Conrad's novel has drawn raves and rage. Each is left to decide where the sanity line lies, to the right or to the left. Upriver or downriver? Riveting every page of the way.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Great novels of all time.......2007-05-12

One of the must reads in literature. Probably my favorite novel ever written. The short length is decieving. It is not a novel to be blown through without thought. The themes of this novel resonate more in our day and age than ever before. Literary greatness.

Chaos theory now stands at the cutting edge of financial decision-making methods. The product of years of scientific investigation into unpredictable phenomena, it has the potential to offer traders entirely new perspectives on the movements of markets—and less risky routes to greater, more consistent profitability. Unlike other books on the subject, Trading Chaos takes chaos analysis out of the realm of the abstract and makes complex concepts easy to understand and use. It offers you the most practical, comprehensive guide available to applying chaos theory to the real world of trading and investing.

In this breakthrough work, author Bill Williams gives you the benefit of his unique qualifications: 35 years of successful trading and a PhD in psychology. The instructional techniques used in Trading Chaos have been tested and refined in the workshops, seminars, and private tutoring sessions Dr. Williams has conducted in 12 different countries.

Designed for all traders—from beginner to experienced professional—Trading Chaos introduces you to the financial applications of chaos in five graduated stages, starting with a clear, nontechnical introduction (Level One: The Novice Trader) all the way to chart analysis, fractals, Elliott wave, and advanced nonlinear dynamics (Level Five: The Expert Trader).

Trading Chaos probes depths of human and economic behavior that other books do not even mention, including:

Numerous charts, trading models, analysis spreadsheets, and review questions reinforce the key concepts and help insure full comprehension of the material.

Regardless of your current degree of expertise, Trading Chaos will take you to new levels of trading confidence and increased profit.

This practical guide to the powerful tools of chaos theory will help you make better, more profitable trades

"Bill Williams brings a unique background and experience to the commodity trading world. His approach to becoming a successful trader includes many fresh and fascinating concepts for traders of all experience levels."—Bruce Babcock Editor, Commodity Traders Consumer Report

"Bill Williams has demystified the Elliott Wave. His technical approach is an innovative and effective way to trade markets for novice and expert traders alike."—Bob Koppel Skylane Trading Group

"Trading Chaos by Bill Williams is an excellent guide to profiting from a market which is nonlinear in structure. I was genuinely surprised that the expert can still learn refreshingly new techniques at each level presented."—Timothy C. Slater Managing Director of Dow Jones Telerate Seminars

Trading Chaos takes chaos theory out of the abstract realm and into the real world of practical investment decision-making. Using the techniques in this remarkable book, you will uncover the hidden patterns of what appear to be the random, unpredictable movements of the commodity, futures, and options markets. Regardless of your current level of experience, expert commodity trader and trainer Bill Williams will give you the skills and insights to move to levels of trading ability you would not have imagined possible.

Unique organizational format—Introduces the reader to the financial applications of chaos in five graduated stages, from Novice to Expert Trader

Expert advice on avoiding common psychological traps and pitfalls—Including such self-limiting afflictions as the "paralysis of analysis," "opinionitis," and the dangers of trading on individual belief systems

A wealth of supplementary materials—Charts, trading models, trade plans, analysis spreadsheets, and trading diaries illustrate and reinforce key concepts

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars As Simple as it is Powerful.......2006-12-18

I am a BIG believer in Bill Williams and his body of work.

I will admit, this book is the most confusing of his three. It is also the FIRST book of his three. If you buy this now, buy it to "fill in the blanks" but use his later works as the backbone of your trading.

READ THE FIRST CHAPTER OF THIS BOOK (it's free online here, just click on excerpts). This chapter alone is worth the entire book.

Buy Trading Chaos 2nd Edition (not this book) and then buy "New Trading Dim mentions" (his second book) and read chapters 9 - 11. Those chapters will give you more ideas of the SCOPE of just what is possible when you simplify your trading and align it with natural market tendencies (chaos principles).

Good luck and Good Trading!

1 out of 5 stars Incomprehensible.......2005-11-07

I am a lawyer and have spent most of my life reading, and had read many books on trading before I read this one. It looked like the holy grail, so the three or four key chapters, I read over and over trying to determine 3 simple things: Where to buy/sell short, where to place the stop loss, where to exit the trade. I confess, I was never able to determine that, from the text, although the author seems to assume that he has made that clear to the reader.

5 out of 5 stars Joke.......2003-10-21

The five stars is only for the cover. However, the content of the book is pathetic. I have read many trading books and several chaos books and I can honestly say this book is neither. I fell for the enlightened self-similar structure cover and wasted my money. Don't repeat my mistake.

If you are interested in chaos and trading, start with Edgar Peters books such as Chaos and the Capital Markets.

The publisher, Wiley, should be ashamed to put out this sort of drivel. Bill Williams is a joke. If you think your trading style is based on your body type, then maybe this book will help you feel better about losing; otherwise skip it and Bill Williams, PhD.'s other lobotomized treatises on trading.

2 out of 5 stars Trader Development.......2003-06-27

This book really is mistitled. Chaos theory for markets is not presented, so look elsewhere for that. The book does present a good theory for the psychology of trading such as "traders differ on value but agree on price" as motivation and explains the development of traders from novice, intermediate, and advanced (skip master and expert level)and the goals for each level. Unfortunately, the methodology for trading with a Chaos background is not touched upon.

Good filler read for background on trading and personal development. Poor on methodology for trading with Chaos. Perhaps Mr. Williams had an epiphany and contends all trades are done in Chaos, so traders should relax. To borrow a line from another author, "some trades will, some trades won't, so what, next trade please."

1 out of 5 stars Donate your money to charity.......2003-03-25

In the first few chapters, he sounds so attractive, after that, you will find the author using new technical analysis words to describe the breakthrough of the resistance/support and claims this a new concept/idea, but he saying nothing on the book and if you are using his method to trade, you are not far from bankruptcy.
Eventually, you waste your money, then why don't send cheque to charities.

Book Description

A powerful new way to navigate today's unprecedented market conditions

"Bill Williams' pioneering application of chaos theory to the financial markets is leading technical analysis into the twenty-first century and beyond. New Trading Dimensions presents a complete, highly original, and intriguing trading method with clear, detailed illustrations, and challenging practice pages. Bill's wisdom, technical expertise, and skillful teaching style make this a revolutionary must-have new book for stock and commodity traders." -Tom Bierovic, Product Manager for User Education, Omega Research, Inc.

"Bill hits the nail on the head. The essence of successful trading is a combination of knowing who you are and allowing the market to reveal its secrets. Bill Williams has the gift of explaining these concepts better than anyone I know. This is a compelling work that belongs in every trader's library." -George Angell, author, Profitable Day-Trading with Precision

"Bill Williams is one of the great educators of our time. He freely shares his knowledge and experience in this inexpensive book. This book is required reading for all market technicians. The principles are sound as we have tested them with our software." -John Hill, President, Futures Truth, Co.

"Bill Williams has always been an excellent teacher, taking complex terms and concepts and translating them into a clear, commonsense approach to trading. This book provides a complete trading program that reflects Bill's years of wisdom and experience in the marketplace." -Darrell Jobman, Editorial Consultant and former Editor-in-Chief of Futures magazine

As today's market environment continues to change dramatically, more and more traders are discovering that traditional forecasting methods-pure technical analysis and fundamental analysis-just do not work. Sending out contradictory messages, these opposing schools of thought leave investors baffled about the future direction of the market, and consequently, at a loss as to how to tailor their trading systems. As a result, many practitioners have now turned to a new forecasting "cocktail" that combines traditional charting methodologies with chaos theory and human psychology. In this groundbreaking book, Bill Williams, a seasoned trader at the forefront of this dynamic new approach, explains exactly what it is, how it works in current stock and commodity markets, and how to use it to your advantage.

Based on human nature rather than the vagaries of the market, the new trading dimension works on the premise that we trade not the market, but our own belief system. By assessing what your personal biases are, you can determine how they influence your ultimate success-or failure-and then adjust your trading strategies accordingly.

Written by an expert in the field who has been featured in Futures, Worth, Success, and other prominent publications, New Trading Dimensions takes the latest in scientific knowledge about human behavior and applies it directly to the fields of stock and commodity investing and trading. With straightforward guidelines, it shows you how to adopt the right attitude toward the behavior of the market and use the right tools (ATTITOOLS) for profitable trading. Packed with practice exercises, specific applications to different types of investments, and a detailed review of important market signals, here's where you'll learn how to:
* Discover what the market wants and align your own beliefs with the direction of the market
* Apply chaos theory to trading and investing
* Use Williams' "Market Alligator" for analyzing and profiting from the markets
* Employ a multidimensional trading program that includes such tools and techniques as fractals, oscillators, AC signals, psychological zones, and balance lines
* Exit trades in a timely fashion to reap high returns

Drawing on the author's more than forty years of experience as both a successful trader and seasoned trainer, this invaluable guide offers a breakthrough method that has proven its ability to turn investors into consistent winners.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Extremely specific strategies and tactics involving MACD and Moving Average Oscillator.......2007-10-23

If moving average oscillator is part of your trading plan, this book will help tremendously. This book has very specific strategies and tactics concerning moving average oscillator usage. Although they are not meant to be mechanized, they are systematic enough to be used in very structured way.

5 out of 5 stars One of the keys to becoming a better trader..........2006-05-15

I've read all three books by Bill Williams and I think this is his best work.

I'm not sure if I agree with every trading tool that he presents, but, like any new information: you apply them to your own objectives. However, make no mistake...his ideas are important and he's done extremely well to lay them out in a readable manner.

This is just my own opinion, but I feel that you can't dismiss other aspects of technical analysis. Combining a few important technical rules with non-linear trading techniques will produce excellent results as long as you apply them correctly. Further, I've read many books on linear mechanical trading models and usually they don't describe ideas that lend themselves to you as a trader adapting efficiently to changing market conditions.

Put simply, if you read between the lines, he suggests a way of thinking that is non-linear and constantly changing: the crux of the markets.

3 out of 5 stars Worth reading.......2006-04-16

It's not the trading methodology that makes this book valuable. Whenever I reread it I completely skip that part. As a matter of fact, in his next book "Trading Chaos Second Edition" Bill pretty much admits the system underperforms in current market conditions and makes the very significant refinement of using a counter-trend signal that he refers to as a "divergent bar" for first entry. He says without saying it in that book that those following the method in this book will be "late and have a difficult time making any money."

No, the reason I have held on to this book, instead of selling it with the others, is the psychological stuff, and the innovated way he ties physics in with successful trading. It is very introspective, thought-provoking, and yes, quite helpful. To quote the book, get out of the win vs. loss mindset and get into the here and now process of noticing what is happening and being in tune with the market.

1 out of 5 stars It is a bad book. Yes, it is that simple. .......2006-01-15

It is a bad book. Yes, it is that simple. If I were to write in the stile of the book, I would say something along this line:

"I tested the theory on super mainframe personal computer to realize that it is wrong for our times."

No, I did not make a mistake. Author actually alleges to test his theory on super computers at some places and super mainframe computers at others. As far as I know, when mainframe computers were the main part of computer departments super computers were not. Super computers cost millions of dollars and were not available to business people for trading testing. Our days, of cause, most PC (personal computers) are much more powerful than old mainframe computers. Servers in IT departments use PC based technology working on the networks. So, why does the author used this archaic terminology instead of telling you to test it on your home computers? Did he what to empress you or instill the need in his "super mainframe computer" service?

OK, so author is not exactly on the cutting edge of technology. But maybe he knows trading as it applies to chaos theory? No, he does not. The book uses moving averages crossovers and a variation of MACD (as difference between two moving averages) as the base of the trading method. Of cause moving averages are transformed into the alligator and MACD into some new indicator. How innovative is it? He also uses a variation of high point definition with a chaos name of a fractal. Well done! Now most of us will think it is a trading chaos book.

If you are not familiar with MACD and moving averages there are better books on the subject. Do not buy this one.

4 out of 5 stars Don't be fooled ... simplicity is bliss.......2006-01-06

This is an excellent book. The gator, oscillator and history principals are all sound. Add to this Martin Pring's approach to technical analysis and you are on your way! The prinicpals are the important thing and not any one trading system or method. This book was once cutting edge. Now it's a classic!
