Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Shipping Time and High Quality Book.......2007-10-21

The book was in great condition and arrived only in a few days, which was ideal for since classes were starting!

4 out of 5 stars readable textbook.......2007-02-14

This textbook was easy to read (not overly technical and used a lot of real-world analogies). An instuctor or professor who requires this text is probably taking a practical approach to the course, which typically means it will be more interesting to learn about the subject matter. The text is only in paperback and not particularly durable for backpack toting- buy used if possible.

5 out of 5 stars Just great.......2007-01-10

First the book appears to be full of ideas without a touch of reality or just theoretical, but after reading the first and second chapter and after understanding the principles of econ 101/102, everything will make sense. There is so much to learn in this book and, the good thing, it is not boring.
I have to say that it was the best political econ book I've ever read, and I do recommend it for beginners.

4 out of 5 stars gives an understanding of the many forms of globalisation.......2006-09-28

Oatley provides a readable, non-mathematical description of international economics since World War 2. The book will give the reader a good grounding in understanding globalisation. Not as something to be feared or tamed, but as arising from fundamental trends that are effectively impossible to reverse.

Oatley certainly talks about more than just globalisation. Like managing exchange rates. But even here, it is discussed in the context and reality of a world where immense pools of capital are often highly mobile. This is not typically thought of by the general public as globalisation. But the text shows that capital flow across national boundaries is indeed another aspect of globalisation, that has become common in the last 20 years.

5 out of 5 stars coherent and concise.......2006-05-05

Oatley has a way of boiling down complex concepts into short, pithy chapters. The writing is clear and concise and the examples used in the text provide interesting perspectives on current political issues such as the US budget deficit or the power dynamics in debt negotiations between powerful international creditors (IMF, World Bank) and debtor countries. The chapters are well structured--with introductions and conclusions that really help draw out the key points of the chapter. I found that this book provided coherent theories with which I could better understand material from other political science and economics classes. Overall, I highly recommend it.

    Book Description

For more than a century and a half, the most-powerful national governments have created institutions of multilateral governance that promise to make a more inclusive world, a world serving women, working people, the colonized, the 'backward,' the destitute and the despised. This book is a study of that promise and the real impact of this world government.

Global Institutions, Marginalization, and Development discusses what systems of global institutions have done, and what they have not done, to keep their promise to the truly disadvantaged. It examines whether the system will serve the world's least advantaged, or marginalize them further.

The future will largely be determined by the understanding of the global political economy developed by the world's most powerful people-corporate leaders and government officials in the strongest states. Their worldviews, in turn, will be influenced both by the political action and the ideas of social movements and by the views of those who study the global political economy. Whether it is the 'economists and political philosophers' or the social movements of the disadvantaged that are most likely to influence the world's lawmakers and the processes by which they will complete the next generation of multilateral institutions are the central topic of this book.

    Key content includes:

    · World Organizations and Human Needs
    · Liberal Internationalism
    · Social Movements and Liberal World Orders
    · Political Consequences of the New Inequality
    · Leadership and Global Governance for the information age
    · Marginalization and the Privileged

This book is important reading for anyone with an interest in international political economy, global governance, development and the politics of north & south.

      Book Description

This book argues that the dramatic post-1970 rise in international capital mobility has not systematically contributed to the retrenchment of developed welfare states as many claim. Nor has globalization directly reduced the revenue-raising capacities of governments and undercut the political institutions that support the welfare state. Rather, institutional features of the polity and the welfare state determine the extent to which the economic and political pressures associated with globalization produce Welfare state retrenchment.

      Download Description

This book argues that the post-1970 rise in international capital mobility has not contributed to the retrenchment of developed welfare states. Nor has globalization reduced the revenue-raising capacities of governments and undercut the political institutions that support the welfare state. Rather, institutional features of the polity and the welfare state determine the extent to which the economic and political pressures associated with globalization produce welfare state retrenchment. In systems characterized by electoral institutions, social corporatist interest representation and policy-making, centralized political authority, and social insurance-based program structures, pro-welfare state interests are favored. In nations characterized by majoritarian electoral institutions, pluralist interest representation and policy-making, decentralization of policy-making authority, and liberal program structure, the economic and political pressures attendant on globalization are translated into rollbacks of social protection. Globalization has had least impact on large welfare states of Northern Europe and most effect on small welfare states of Anglo nations.

        Book Description

The World Bank is dedicated to the promotion of sustainable economic development and to poverty reduction throughout the developing world. The contributors to this volume argue the Bank's greatest asset is its accumulated knowledge and experience of the development process, and propose that it organize itself around the concept of a "Knowledge Bank." Part I examines the World Bank as an institution, examining its structure. In Part II the effectiveness of World Bank assistance is evaluated.

This two-volume set contains a careful selection of the most significant papers on anti-dumping. These important articles have not only shaped the policy debate in this area but have also substantially influenced how we think about the use and role of anti-dumping in trade relations today. After an initial look at some classic articles, the collection provides an overview of the past two decades of academic research on this subject. The contributions are both empirical and theoretical with the emphasis being on the economic rather than the legal analysis involved. The volumes make these papers easily accessible to a wide audience, including academics, policymakers and all those concerned with anti-dumping issues.

                Customer Reviews:

                5 out of 5 stars excellent book.......2002-10-18

this an excellent book, very comprehensive and clearly written, which could be read by both beginners and specialists. i recommend it highly.

                4 out of 5 stars A Good Reading.......2001-06-20

This is a good reading but it lacks reference to all the sources from which the ideological foundation of Islamic Economic System has been derived. If you are interested in a rational ideological background of Islamic Economics the following two books are also a must read:

                1. Society and Economics in Islam :Writings and Declarations of Sayyid Mahmud Taleghani by Sayyid Mahmud Taleghani, Prof. Hamid Algar (Editor) (available on amazon)

                2. Our Economy by Muhammad Baqir As-Sadr

5 out of 5 stars By far the best book on Islamic banking and finance.......2001-02-14

After the frustration of looking for a good book on the subject of Islamic banking and finance, I was glad I found 'Islamic finance in the global economy'. It is by far the best, most comprehensive and most readable book on the subject. The author has an encyclopedic knowledge of the subject in all its ramifications (religion, finance, economics, politics, history, etc.), yet his erudition does not stand in the way of clarity. Indeed, Warde is a superb writer, and the book can be read and enjoyed by a wide range of readers - bankers and other professionals, academics and researchers, students, etc. While the book's lucid and fluid style makes it accessible to those who are new to the subject, it will be equally valuable to those well versed in the subject: academics, experts, Shari'ah advisers (who will not doubt use it as a handy reference book). Indeed it is heavily footnoted and has a comprehensive index. As the title indicates, it is a book about Islamic finance 'in the global economy'. As such it provides a welcome departure from most books on the subject, which are really about theology, and not about the 'real world' of Islamic finance. One criticism of the book is its rather steep price. Although it is in my opinion worth every penny, the book will be out of the reach of most of its potential audience. The publisher may assume that bankers can afford it, but I feel that its potential audience is much larger: certainly all students of Islamic economics and finance will want to read it. (I assume however that there will be at some point a paperback edition.) M. Osman, London
