4 out of 5 stars "A Raisin in the Sun" Review.......2007-09-18

"A Raisin in the Sun" is an example of Midwestern African American literature, which delivers a realistic view of conditions of living for impoverished African Americans living in the Southside of Chicago. However, some tend to abjure this idea of Hansberry's play, they believe that her view of this lifestyle was exaggerated. The acumen of Hanberry's knowledge on the subject is lost on some, however her detailed sketch of the Younger's life shows the rest of us that this must have deeply affected her. The acerbic tone of Mama Younger when she is discussing money with her son shows Hansberry's expertise. With acrimony Walter (Mama's son) goes to his job as a driver of the rich every weekday. Hansberry's makes it clear to the reader that Walter has much antipathy towards the people he is driving around. Some may argue that in real life a chaffeur would be treated with more respect than which Walter received. However, from my experiences I've seen nothing but disrespect towards these workers. The apartment, in which the Younger's have lived for the longest time, is not a pleasant place to live. Hansberry's does an excellent job in the way she makes sure not to adumbrate the condition of the run down apartment. Some find it unrealistic that they could have been living in this ragged apartment for such a long time, and not being able to move out. This shows directly the unfair situations and poor pay that African American's received at this time in Chicago. Lorraine Hansberry's detailed play is for anyone who wished to understand the hardships of African Americans. Those who do not agree with Hansberry's interpretation of the time period are seriously misinformed. After reading this triumph Hansberry will truly have your approbation.

5 out of 5 stars A Good Read.......2007-05-29

I had to read this book for my college class--history of the women's movement. It is a play and very easy to read. Very interesting and I probably read it in 2 days (but it could easily be read in 1 day). It has a powerful ending.

5 out of 5 stars Well, son, I'll tell you: Life for me ain't been no crystal stair. - L. Hughes.......2007-05-07

`A Raisin in the Sun' by Lorraine Hansberry is a play that has become a true American classic. In 1959 it hit Broadway like no other. James Baldwin proclaimed, "never before in the entire history of the American theater had so much of the truth of black people's lives been seen on stage." Since its opening, this play has garnered worldwide acclaim and spawned movies, music scores and literature.

The play depicts the plight of an African-American family, the Youngers, struggling in the 1950s. The title, inspired by a Langston Hughes' poem, refers to Walter Younger's dream to make it out of the South Side of Chicago. "What happens to a dream deferred? / Does it dry up / Like a raisin in the sun?....Or does it explode?"

Hansberry's realism is evidenced by the vividness and believability of the characters. They are so rich and powerful that over the years they have been portrayed only by some of the biggest names in the African-American theatrical community: Sidney Poiter, Ruby Dee, Esther Rolle, Ossie Davis, Phylicia Rashad, Audra McDonald. In 1994, I was fortunate to see the play at Alliance Theatre in Atlanta, GA starring the late Esther Rolle as Lena Younger and Kenny Leon, now director, as Walter Younger. I was not disappointed.

It is not by luck that this play has stood the test of time and made its indelible mark on the pages of African American literature. Take a few moments to observe the cast of characters through the playwright's pen and see the reason why it is a classic.

I purchased this audio tape for my daughter for a summer reading assignment for school. It was easy to listen to and follow. We listened to it in the car each time we had to go somewhere. It kept our interest and was a great way to complete the assignment. I wish more book were available on audio.

After reading this book, I guarantee that you will never visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art (or any wonderful, old cavern of a museum) without sneaking into the bathrooms to look for Claudia and her brother Jamie. They're standing on the toilets, still, hiding until the museum closes and their adventure begins. Such is the impact of timeless novels . . . they never leave us. E. L. Konigsburg won the 1967 Newbery Medal for this tale of how Claudia and her brother run away to the museum in order to teach their parents a lesson. Little do they know that mystery awaits!

Book Description

When suburban Claudia Kincaid decides to run away, she knows she doesn't just want to run from somewhere, she wants to run to somewhere -- to a place that is comfortable, beautiful, and, preferably, elegant. She chooses the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Knowing that her younger brother Jamie has money and thus can help her with a serious cash-flow problem, she invites him along.

Once settled into the museum, Claudia and Jamie find themselves caught up in the mystery of an angel statue that the museum purchased at auction for a bargain price of $225. The statue is possibly an early work of the Renaissance master, Michelangelo, and therefore worth millions. Is it? Or isn't it? Claudia is determined to find out. Her quest leads her to Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, the remarkable old woman who sold the statue, and to some equally remarkable discoveries about herself.

I want to go to New York to see this museum. This book was incredible and I loved the style of writing and the way the story unfolded letting each character have their own voice. I loved the notes at the end from the author. I really could tell she loved these characters and did care about their ever after. Every child should read this book. Wait, every adult should read this book!

From the Mixed up Files of Mrs. Basil E Frankweiler
E.L Konigsburg

Twelve year old Claudia Kincaid, is bored with her life - being an "A" student all the time, not having a big allowance, and having to deal with being the only girl and oldest of all her brothers. So, she decides to change things a bit to make them exciting. She takes all her allowance, her brother's allowance, her brother (Jamie) and a trumpet and violin case and heads off on an enjoyable, fun adventure to the Metropolitan Museum of art in New York City. There, they take tours everyday, sleep in queens' beds and do whatever they please while being careful not to get caught. One day, they uncover a beautiful, exquisite statue of an angel. As they get to know more about this angel, they find out that it is a mystery. No one knows who actually created this angel. Claudia is determined to find out who the artist is. But will she ever figure it out without getting caught?

This book was full of adventure, and filled determination and concentration. I really enjoyed this book because I felt like I was in the story with the characters through their good and bad times. Konigsburg makes this story become so realistic, it comes to life.

I recommend this book for anyone who loves a good adventure. The plot and setting of Konigsburg's book makes it an incredible, thrilling quest that I am sure you will enjoy! I know I enjoyed it!

5 out of 5 stars From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs Basil E.Frankweiler.......2007-04-17

E.L. Konigsburg wrote, From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, a Newberry children or teens book. The book is about two children running away from their house and staying at the Metropolitan Museums of Art. The obstacles they go through to live independently include regrets from going anyway. It reminds you how much you care about your parents. While at the museum the kids find a mysterious puzzle that has clues that to an unexpected conclusion. There are no weaknesses in this book. I read this book because my Aunt is the author. I am not saying this book is good because I am related to the Author but because it is a fantastic and interesting novel. I totally recommend this book to anyone. There is also other books of hers that have won Newberry medals. A movie has been made to go with the book if you are more of a movie kind of guy.

Great but before I say anything, NOTE this is a six part writing, the reader must read them in order to make sense. I obtained this book at the local library and even they did not know there were (6) more sequences to follow. Great Series

5 out of 5 stars on the run chasing the falconers........2007-04-17

I enjoyed this book because it had a lot of detail and interesting and funny parts to it. this book was one of my all time favorites it made me realize how much I have and how little the kids in this story have. Because I feel really bad for aiden and meg because there on the run risking there lives and trying to get to there uncle to see if he can help them get there parents out of jail. Their parents are in jail for something they didn't even do and I think that's a little unfair. And I would totally recommend this book because it is breath taking and will keep you on your toes at all times and make u want to read it.

5 out of 5 stars PCE student review.......2007-04-16

Chasing the Falconers is a well-written story about two children whose parents went to jail for something they didn't do. This book, by Gordon Korman, is a wonderful book. My favorite scene is when Aiden and Meg steal the ATV. That scene is wonderful, but you'll have to find out why. My favorite character is Miguel Reyes because he's tough, and not scared of anything. The theme of the book is two kids (Aiden and Meg) are trying to prove their parents innocence. You'll like this book if you like adventures and probably if you're a kid who likes to read Realistic Fiction. Another scene I like is the end, but you'll have to read it yourself to see what happens. It would make a great movie because it would inspire people to reach for their goals, and to do what they have to do to get there. People will be inspired by this book after they read it and that's a guarantee. I love this book because it's a well-written story about two kids who go on an adventure, and there are obstacles at every turn. So if you buy this book you won't regret it. I hope you enjoy the book!

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Interesting concepts get lost in outlandish plot.......2007-09-08

The basic plot has the same roots as Harry Potter. I think most young people would like to belive that they are extaordinarily talented orphaned offspring who will be discovered for the truly special people they are. The plot moves along swiftly. The book does have some interesting things to say about memories and what they contribute to who we are and whether the brain should be used for recall vs reason. There is plenty of action, but the story takes outlandish jumps that require the reader to not just suspend his disbelief, but send it on an extended vacation. I was uncomfortable with the frequent threat of gun violence. It seemed a convenient way to put the good guys in peril that seemed oddly old fashioned in this modern concept novel. One scene where a pistol is discharged in a dungeon was ludicrous. I believe her strongest writing depicted the teenage girls just being girls at the start. There is an opening for a sequel at the end, but I won't be around for that.

5 out of 5 stars really cool book.......2007-04-12

this book kept me on the edge of my seat and the story was really interesting
if you're looking for a great adventure book or are just a diehard haddix fan, this is the book for you

5 out of 5 stars different and pleasing.......2007-01-07

I must say, in all my life, I have never read a book at all like this. This book is very good, but a little hard to follow. I think it should be intended for a higher reading level. Margaret Peterson Haddix is a very complicated individual, I can tell. A lot of her stories are harder to grasp to a person of a younger mind set. I have always thoroughly enjoyed her books and am looking forward to her next one.

5 out of 5 stars A Book to Remember.......2006-06-06

I just read Escape from Memory by Margaret Peterson Haddix and it was great. I already love her books and I've read 1 of her shadow children series books. Once you start reading this book you wont want to put it down. Every page has a new twist and the suspense just kills you. It's like holding a puppy from the shelter; you never want to put it down. I'm not saying this is the only good book she has she might have more that you might like better. I like when books have a few characters and don't switch of between like four different characters. My favorite part is when she finds her mom but her Aunt Memory (Rona) closes the door behind them and she finds her mom who is really her aunt memory. That's when she tells Kira about the past of Cyrthe. You should really read this book.

Mike P.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for 6th grade+.......2006-05-02

This has been one of my all-time favorite books ever since I read it last year. The plot, though confusing, has just the right amount of twists and turns to keep you interested.

One thing I especially enjoyed was the fact that no one was pure good or pure evil, and very few people end up with the same character Kira percieves them with in the beginning. An example is Aunt Memory. At the beginning of the book, she is percieved by Kira as strange but welcome. A little while later, Kira begins to have second thoughts. Then, she thinks of her as kind, then evil, then, surprisingly, with a hint of sympathy.

This is an overall very good book which I would recommend to anyone 6th grade and up looking for a great book you can really get lost in.

"Splendid...Thom tells the story with humor and eloquence, and a thumping good tale it is, too."
THE WASHINGTON POST
In one generation, the Clark family of Virginia fought for our nation's independence, and explored, conquered, and settled the continent from sea to shining sea. This powerfully written book recreates the warm life of the family, the dangers of the battlefield, the grueling journeys across an untamed wilderness, and the soul-stirring Lewis and Clark Expedition. This mighty epic is a fitting tribute to the wisdom and courage of Ann Rogers Clark, her husband John, and the ten sons and daughters they nurtured and inspired.

From Sea To Shining Sea is an excellent account of the Lewis and Clark Expedition to the Pacific Northwest It also describes most interestingly the participants and how they related to each other.

5 out of 5 stars A National Treasure.......2006-08-01

This is truly a treasure. Even if you don't like history, you will find yourself wanting to know more after reading this book. It would be a great read, side by side, in an American history class. Students reading about the lives of people and how they were affected by each of those early events in our history would surely enjoy the class a lot more.

I wish it was printed in hardcover or large print.

5 out of 5 stars From Sea to Shining Sea.......2006-01-24

This is an remarkable view of the early history of the forming and then growing United States through the experiences of several generations of the extraordinary Clark family. The story weaves together the real life experiences of this family showing the trials, challenges and rugged life in our western frontier as it moved from western Virginia into the the Ohio river valley and on to the vast region west of the Mississippi river that culminates in the Rogers & Clark expedition. If one enjoys early american history or an intense novel packed with drama, this is a book that will hold your attention.

Book Description

What if you could see a loved one who has died, not in a future spiritual realm, but here and now, in this lifetime?

It is possible, says Carol Bowman, author of Children's Past Lives and a pioneer in reincarnation studies. Based on in-depth research and direct observation of very young children, she shows in this groundbreaking book how common it is for beloved relatives to reincarnate into the same family. Typical families share how their children -- some as young as two and still in diapers -- speak spontaneously of intimate details from the lives of a family member they never knew. These true stories shed new light on age-old questions of family relationships: Do we choose our parents? What relationships survive death? What happens to the soul after a miscarriage or abortion? Bowman offers hope for anyone who has lost a beloved relative and longs to be reunited again.

5 out of 5 stars Everyone should read this........2007-10-11

I've read a few books about reincarnation, but this one has to be one of the best. It's well written and it tells it from all sorts of angles. Even the statistics are there, while it also managed to speak to my heart in a way none of the others did.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful service!!!.......2007-08-12

I received the book just a few days after ordering it. I immediately got an email responding to my order explaining everything clearly. The service was the best. Very responsible and reliable person!!

5 out of 5 stars The best on the topic.......2007-06-30

I ordered 5 books from Amazon on this topic. This one was by far the best. Some of the others got really boring really fast, but this book had me captivated from start to finish. It certainly was a very comforting book to read. Since I got it over a year ago, it has not been in my house because everyone I know wants to borrow it! I hope to get it back soon to re-read!

4 out of 5 stars Wanted more.......2006-08-25

the book is a very fast read. It contains data from many researchers on the subject, especially how other cultures view reincarnation, which is very informative but it begs for more. The stories described are fun to read.

5 out of 5 stars Reincarnation in the Home.......2006-07-27

If reincarnation is real, and if we develop deep bonds as soul families, then it makes sense that at least some of the time we would reincarnate right back into the same family to work out unfinished business. This is the premise of Carol Bowman's book, Return From Heaven, and she offers numerous true accounts of children whose parents observed behaving and speaking and thinking like good ol' granddad, or auntie so-and-so. Many people, even those who don't normally believe in reincarnation or past lives, have wondered whether the infant in their arms wasn't the returned soul of an aged or not-so-aged relative recently deceased--anyone who has entertained such a thought will enjoy Return From Heaven. I found this book simply fascinating, and I'm sure that many who read it will begin to run over in their minds the behavior of their children and realize that they have been parenting and nurturing someone deeply familiar to them--their own nearest and dearest.

Book Description

Need the lowdown of first names? Linda Rosenkrantz and Pamela Redmond Satran, authors of the bestselling Beyond Jennifer Jason, Madison Montana and The Last Word of First Names, draw on years of research and experience to offer important insights like these:Call your daughter Rose, but don't call your son Thorne.Nature names are fashionable now, especially those that haven't been used much in the past. December, in other words is much coolers than April.Although it sounds desert-like, Zahara is actually a Muslim and Swahili name meaning 'flower'. In Hebrew, it denotes brightness.Diego, which is a Spanish form of James, has a lot of verve when combined with either a Latin or Anglo surname.Though it has a hippyish feel, Jupiter has a legitimate history as a first name, used in the country as far back as the eighteenth century--in fact, Jupiter Hammon was the first African-American poet published here.A fresh, illuminating, and indispensable guide to thousands of names--from Aaliyah to Zuri--Baby Names Now will provide the information and inspiration you need to make the prefect choice.

3 out of 5 stars Good concept, but lacking.......2005-07-08

I enjoyed Beyond Jennifer and Jason very much, so you can imagine my excitement at seeing another book by the same authors. I like the basic idea of this book--to inform prospective parents about the associations names have (e.g. Ariel is associated with The Little Mermaid). However, I found that some of these were not included. I looked up a few names to test the book, and the authors are apparently not very knowledgeable about children's popular culture. It was written in 1995 (I don't know if new editions have been written or not), so the authors can be forgiven for not mentioning that among children and those who work with children, the name Patrick is associated with Spongebob Squarepants's pink, dim-witted starfish friend. However, under the name Mario, though many famous people named Mario were listed, there was no mention of Super Mario. Super Mario Bros. is one of the most popular video game series in the world! I realize that the authors probably don't know this because video games are primarily a young people's pastime, but if they had done their research, they would have been able to warn parents that children named Mario (unless they live in Latino communities) are likely to be made fun of for bearing the name of a video game character, instead of just relying on their own knowledge of popular culture. Even if they had done their research, this would still be the kind of book that needs to be constantly updated.
My other complaint is that they encourage parents to give girls masculine names (e.g. Michael--I swear I am not making this up!), but discourage them from giving boys so-called "feminine names" even if many still consider them masculine or ambisexual (e.g. Robin--many people associate the name with Robin Hood or with Batman's sidekick). Don't they realize that this practice only perpetuates the double standard, rather than solving any problems?
I would like it if someone wrote a better version of this book.

4 out of 5 stars A lot of fun.......2005-05-23

Those who condemn this book for not being a long, boring list of name origins and meanings, or for stating that their name has gone out of style for today's children, are missing the point. "Baby Names Now" is a fun, readable guide to what people are naming their children in the early 2000s, including famous namesakes (saints, popes, presidents, royalty, music and movie stars) and what some celebrities have named their children. It's also fascinating to read how certain names have gone out of style: for example "Lisa," "Amy," "Susan" and "Dawn" were very popular for babies born in the 60s (and thus, my classmates), but are rarely used today.

The book's major flaw is in not recognizing that parents name their children using the last names of people they admire, not just the first names. At one point, it reads "Harrison Ford...is almost certainly the reason for the name Harrison's popularity" - excuse me, ever hear of the Beatles? The entries for the name "Jordan" don't mention Michael Jordan, certainly a major inspiration for that name in this area. The entry for "Jackson" doesn't mention Michael, Janet, or Samuel L. The entry for "Landon" doesn't mention Michael. The entries for "Cassidy" don't mention David and Shaun, so popular in the 70s when many of today's moms were growing up. The entry for "Lucas" - do I have to say it, fellow Star Wars kids grown up and naming their children? And come on, how can you mention the name "Wayne" without acknowledging the popularity of John Wayne?

Still, this is a lot of fun, and I give the authors credit for recognizing that "Althea" is from a Grateful Dead song. I look forward to the next edition.

4 out of 5 stars More fun than the traditional baby name book.......2005-05-17

What I loved about this book was that the authors actually expressed their opinions on the names. Some many others just list the origin and meaning. The authors provide some clever and often witty commentary about each name as well as some fascinating information about how trends in names have changed over time. No, I didn't always agree with their opinions, but reading the book did help me figure out more about the kind of name I was looking for.

1 out of 5 stars Good For Sheep Only.......2004-08-26

I was hoping for a book that would illuminate some choices for baby names, while pointing out any unfortunate associations I had not thought of. Only to receive a book that was short on credible information, and long on personal judgement.

I was truly disappointed in the seemingly arbitrary way in which the authors claimed some names to be outdated. While I understand that Cherry could be a torment to a young girl, lumping Cheri and Cheryl in with these was absolutely silly. Having grown up in the eighties with that name, I was never once called a name referring the former. Asking two friends - a Cheri, (ten years younger than myself) and a Cheryl, (four years older) if they had ever been teased in that way, they both laughed and said no. Many times the author's reasons for dissuading parents from choosing a name seem to be based only on the author's personal preferences and peccadilloes.

I found that many of the names the authors' gave their seal of approval to, were names that were probably most trendy at the moment they were writing. They blithely recommend, good god... California? Not realizing that place names, (like Brooklyn, etc.) are already being ridiculed as tired and silly in magazines. No doubt in a year or two, they'll be recommending Apple and other fruit names, once they too are no longer trendy.

The most unfortunately thing is that the author's emphasis on trendy or common names, may warn parents off of some unique and delightful older names. In the end I could have saved myself the price of the book and done the name research on the internet.

5 out of 5 stars This One's My Favorite.......2003-11-12

If you're looking for a dictionary of baby names, there are about a zillion other books out there to choose from. But if you've already looked at the typical baby name lists and were left feeling uninspired, check out "Baby Names Now". The authors offer real world wisdom and advice about each name. Each entry is clever and funny. Their descriptions are often completely subjective, but that's what makes this book so much fun. It really gets you thinking about what you do or don't like and why. I recommend it to all expecting mothers and fathers!

2 out of 5 stars Didn't care for this book.......2007-08-09

If your looking for a typical name this book is has way to many different names. We just used the top 100 names in the front of the book.

1 out of 5 stars Repeat, repeat, repeat.......2007-04-07

This book repeats names through out the entire book many times. Not really that good of a book. There definitely isn't 55,000 names in this book.

2 out of 5 stars Not useful :(.......2006-12-28

In my opinion there were too many names in this book. Most of them were the same names but were just spelled differently. And there were a lot of girl names in the boy section and vice versa. I thought it was poorly organized and edited. I did like the front section with the name lists and categories. But overall I was really disappointed in this book. Not a good buy.

5 out of 5 stars Very thorough.......2006-01-24

I looked through many baby name books and this one seemed to be very comprehensive. It has old and new, popular and old-fashioned names. Not only the familiar American names but other common names from around the world. If you're looking for definitions this book doesn't elaborate but gives a few words plus the origin and alternate spelling. There are also lists of the most popular names from different decades and different countries. This book will keep me busy for a while. I am very happy with my purchase.

Being an avid Parents magazine subscriber, I turn through their pages every month searching for advice from parents across the country.
