    Book Description

Since the late 1980s, almost all Latin American countries have gone through a process of far-reaching economic reforms, featuring in particular trade, financial and capital account liberalization. At first the reforms seemed to be working as promised and trade expanded. However, at the turn of the century, the economies have shown unstable and rather dismal growth. Some argue trade liberalization is partly to be blamed for this.

Who Gains from Free Trade examines the extent to which trade reforms have been an important source of the slowdown of economic growth, rising inequality and rising poverty as observed in many parts of the region. This volume presents an comprehensive analysis of this important topic, utilizing research based on 16 country narratives of policy reform and economic performance; rigorous general equilibrium (CGE) modelling of the economy-wide effects of trade reform for all country cases; alongside application of an innovative method of microsimulations to assess the employment and factor income distribution impact of policy reforms on poverty and inequality at the household level.

The study finds that trade liberalization and the switch to export-led growth are not the cause of the growth slowdown in Latin America. Nor are they the cause of rising poverty and inequality. If anything, the impact on growth and poverty in general has been positive, but very small. Thus, further trade opening is neither the solution to the region's economic woes, nor should we expect any disastrous implications for aggregate poverty.

      Book Description

Oil-related activities damage tropical rainforests, but this is just one side of a complicated story.
This book, a study of oil producing countries, looks at the linkages between macroeconomic trends and how policies affect the environment. In a balanced and comprehensive review, Sven Wunder, shows that oil revenues can indirectly come to protect tropical rainforests using case studies based on eight countries including Cameroon, Ecuador, Gabon, Papua New Guinea and Venezuela.
This topical, accessible and readable book has immediate and direct implications for policy formulation that help decide what can be done to diminish deforestation without jeopardizing economic growth. This book needs to be read not only by students and academics involved in environmental economics, but also by all those involved in policymaking.

          Book Description

This book provides the first comprehensive overview of the economic development of Singapore, easily the leading commercial and financial center in Southeast Asia throughout the twentieth century. This development has been based on a strategic location at the crossroads of Asia, a free trade economy, and a dynamic entrepreneurial tradition. Throughout this study Dr. Huff assesses the interaction of government policy and market forces, and places the transformation of the Singaporean economy in the context of both development theory and experience elsewhere in East Asia.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars extremely useful discussion of Singapore, pre-1959.......2007-10-10

There are many texts about the development of Singapore from when it achieved self-government in 1959. This book does not try to compete with them. Instead, most of it deals with the period between about 1869, with the opening of the Suez Canal, and 1959. Much of the analysis about the early period contradict popular mythology about Singapore -- the country was not backwards and poor when it became independent; in fact, it had a GDP per capital about 1/3 that of the U.K. This book describes how this came to be the case.

It also discusses the more recent period, but the material there is similar to what is available elsewhere. The five stars I'm giving the book are for the earlier chapters.

I have heard representatives of third world nations describe their development plans as being "Singapore like," meaning that they plan to rocket from poverty into selling intellectual and financial services in a short period of time. I wish more of them understood the special circumstances that allowed Singapore to make the leap, and the length of time that it really took. This book is valuable for anybody considering similar problems.

          4 out of 5 stars A well done book.......2001-08-11

A fine book, one that give a rich understanding of what happened and why.

Sure, Lee Kuan-yiow transformed the situation. However, it is easy to overlook that Singapore was more than just a bastion of British might, even usurping the Sumatra rubber burning industry as it was more efficient than the Dutch efforts, despite desires of the Dutch to keep that money maker inside its borders. Therefore Singapore was basing a good part of its well being in the early part of this century upon the lack of industry on the Dutch side, mainly because it was a modern city hub of the region at that time and one that provided stable reinvestment.

Other examples are given, like the industrial machining might developing about 1930 because it was the next logical step.

All that was needed was for multinationals to give them the steady workload as they had already done most of the jobs before (as was the case industrial wise in Japan, Germany, and similar countries after WWII, the people's skill was the primary mover).

It may seem like a small issue, but it destroys the myth of Singapore being a backwater and bodes ill for any country trying to rise up in short order from absolutely nothing (no examples of such, actually, in modern times, though Australia & N.Z. come closest from the periods of 1787-1900 & 1830-1900). It is interesting that in those cases as was similar with Singapore & Hong Kong, migration of an industrious population was the keystone, beyond natural resources.)

          Book Description

Tourism is by many measures the world's largest and fastest growing industry, and it provides myriad benefits to hosts and visitors alike. Yet if poorly managed, tourism can have serious negative impacts on tourist communities-their environment, physical appearance, economy, health, safety, and even their social values.

Managing Tourism Growth analyzes and evaluates methods by which communities can carefully control tourism in order to maximize the positive aspects while minimizing the detrimental effects. The authors offer vivid examples of the ways in which uncontrolled tourism can adversely affect a community, and explain how to create an effective strategy that can protect tourism resources for current and future generations.

Specific chapters provide detailed descriptions and evaluations of various approaches that communities around the world have successfully used. The authors examine alternative legal and regulatory measures, management techniques, and incentives that target tourism growth at all levels, from the quality of development, to its amount and rate of growth, to the locations in which it takes place. Approaches examined include: quality differentiation, performance standards, and trade-off strategies; preservation rules, growth limitations, and incremental growth strategies; expansion, dispersal, and concentration strategies, and identification of new tourism resources. The final chapter presents a concise and useful checklist of the elements of successful strategies that can help guide destination communities in the planning process.

An outstanding feature of the book is the numerous and varied case studies it offers, including Santa Fe, New Mexico; Milford Sound, New Zealand; Nusa Dua, Bali; Great Barrier Reef, Australia; Sanibel, Florida; Canterbury, England; Republic of Maldives; Bruges, Belgium; Times Square, New York; Papua New Guinea; Park City, Utah; Whistler, British Columbia; and many others.

The depth and accessibility of information provided, along with the wealth of global case studies, make the book must-reading for planning professionals, government officials, tourism industry executives, consultants, and faculty and students of geography, planning, or tourism.

The Colaborative Vision applied to tourism planning process:

This book talk about the tourism growth to the perspective of sustanaible development, but give the global VISION. This VISION is very usefull because is based on System General Theory, and plus to this logic structure the COLABORATIVE activities establishing dynamic relationship between the components of Industry Tourism-System, the core of this book is the Community Participation towards to Common-Pool Resuorces Paradigm,in all cases relationated to tourism, for instance: in development, in perception , in behavior , and so on. For other hand, the management process is presented like the vehicule to perform any activitie or program or project in this study-object. My atention for this book was determine by the "system-process of management" , structured by a set of administrative conceptual focus: overall RESILIENCY and sustainability, efficiency and equity too. And in the Management is very important understand in really dimension the Strategies Process. So on..

I believe that this book is very usefull to create an advanced VISION of the component of Tourism Industry and the Management Process towards Sustainable Development. The book require previous studies about Management, Administrative Science, System Theory, System Analysis and Game Theory.

          Thanks!.

4 out of 5 stars A very good overview, well-written and well structured book........2000-04-24

The cases studied are very updated and they analyze several situation at many countries(on unusual economics situations).

4 out of 5 stars Read this book before arguing over tourism regulation........1999-10-20

This survey is an essential resource for tourism supporters, opponents, regulators, and anyone else wants to understand what can happen and what can be done when the rest of the world finds out what a nice place you have.

It's basically a casebook, with a sturdy analytical framework to help you compare the cases. The authors describe regulatory systems for managing community tourism resources to control quality, to control quantity, to enhance the market, or some combination of these. Examples are provided from about 30 communities in the U.S. and around the world.

The book includes a particularly valuable collection of notes that should help readers track down further resources and contacts.

I'm a local government staffer for a city of 30,000 that has seen its tourism traffic swell to 700,000 people per summer, with daily loads up to 10,000. This book provides some comfort in knowing that we are not alone in this remarkable experience, and we can learn from what others have tried.

The book suffers somewhat from mediocre typography, but the layout is clean, the maps are helpful, and there's a sprinkling of photographs to give you a feel for some of the places under discussion. You may not need a copy for each of your planning commissioners, but you will probably want one or two to loan out and one to keep in your desk.

            Book Description

In this sophisticated yet accessible analysis of the open economies of Sub-Saharan Africa, Jean-Paul Azam analyses international trade, exchange rate issues, and longer-term growth, taking due account of the distinctive features of African economies. In particular, he examines the informal as well as the formal institutional frameworks which prevail in different African countries and which affect their macroeconomic behaviour. Key issues explored include tariffs and quotas, membership of the CFA Zone, and currency convertibility or inconvertibility, as well as smuggling, corruption, parallel markets in goods and currencies, ethnic diversity and redistribution. Case studies of important macroeconomic events are used to establish basic stylized facts from which the theory emerges, and special attention is paid to the consequences of macroeconomic events for the poor, via the food market or traditional redistribution mechanisms.

              Book Description

Doing Business in 2005: Obstacles to Growth is the second in a series of annual reports investigating the scope and manner of regulations that enhance business activity and those that constrain it. New quantitative indicators on business regulations and their enforcement can be compared across more than 130 countries, and over time. The indicators are used to analyze economic outcomes and identify what reforms have worked, where and why. Topics in Doing Business in 2005 include: Licensing and Inspections: Having registered a business, now what? In most countries, firms face a myriad of sector specific licenses as well as inspections to enforce compliance. The Doing Business database constructs two sets of indicators on the regulation of operations. One measures the steps, time and costs of complying with licensing and permit requirements for ongoing. The other assesses the enforcement of regulations through two of the most common types of inspections-labor and tax. Registering Property: Property registries were first developed to help raise tax revenue. What was good for the tax authorities has since proven to be good for strengthening property rights-the registries strengthen incentives to invest, facilitate trade, and expand access to credit. New indicators cover the steps, time and cost to register property. Measures of the legal provisions that strengthen property rights and the efficiency of property registries are also developed. Protecting Investors: Corporate governance issues are often thought to affect only publicly listed companies in developed countries. In fact, corporate governance is relevant for every large privately held company that has more than one owner. New indicators examine several possible types of shareholder expropriation, including related-party transactions, guarantees and loans to company managers and directors, mergers and acquisitions, disclosure of ownership information, and treatment of conflicts of interest. Including a new emphasis on gender, Doing Business not only provides insights into business constraints throughout the world but highlights particular barriers faced by women. Doing Business is a comprehensive resource that no investor, economic adviser, business developer, or economic policymaker should be without.

                  Book Description

The standard version of the Heckscher-Ohlin model of international trade treats the factors of production--land, labor, and capital--as essentially analytically similar and symmetrical. In these six essays Ronald Findlay explores modifications to the factor proportions model, looking in particular at what happens when human capital and land use are allowed to vary endogenously.

Findlay extends the factor proportions theory of international trade to consider capital accumulation, income distribution, and factor mobility in a growing world economy. Among the questions he addresses are such fundamental issues as the conditions under which international trade equalizes the rate of interest; the effects of learning and invention on economic growth and comparative advantage; the role of human capital and skill formation in determining patterns of comparative advantage and the reciprocal effect of international trade on these variables through its impact on wage differentials between skilled and unskilled workers; the incorporation of new territories into a trading system by extensions of the frontier and labor migration as in the establishment of the Atlantic economy of the nineteenth century; and the impact of reductions in transport costs of industrial raw materials on global patterns of manufacturing activity and comparative advantage.
