So many good recipes.......2007-09-20
This cookbook is a great addition to any cook's collection. I have found the Soy Marinated Salmon recipe to be a hit- even with those who say they don't like fish. Whenever I want to try something new, I always pull this book and my Paula Deen book off the shelf. It is a great staple in the simple home cooking category. Enjoy!
Recipe Hall of Fame Cookbook.......2007-04-03
Very good -- am in theprocess of trying out a few of these. Good work!!!
Really Great Cookbook!!!.......2005-07-28
I received this cookbook as a wedding gift, and I think it has been the one thing I have used over and over. I have yet to make a recipe from this cookbook that is "average." If you make nothing else, the Applebarn Fresh Apple Cake is worth the price of this book. I need to buy a second volume because the original is wearing out!
Awesome cookbook!.......2005-03-13
I would describe this cookbook as fun. The recipes span a vast range, as they are collected from different cookbooks from across America. I've created MANY of the recipes over the last few years and have loved all of them. As one reviewer mentioned, most recipes are not for the calorie concious. But then, it doesn't say it is the Light Recipe Hall of Fame, now does it? Most recipes are what I call home-cooking type recipes, with a several A+ restaurant quality recipes (like the Crab Bisque on pg 69). The best part is that most are very easy to make.
I did our daughter's wedding feast from this book!.......2001-02-13
This is the best collection of delectable recipes EVER! I depend on it for everything now. The first recipe I tried was the cheesecake, and my husband looked at me and said: "to die for." The pecan pie is without equal. I prepared the food for 250 guests after our daughter's wedding, and every recipe came from this book. The chocolate raspberry truffle brownies were the biggest hit! The finger foods were wonderful! The thing that cooks will like the best is that they can be assured that every single recipe will turn out great--that they've all been tested and chosen as winners. No more leafing through and trying to decide IF something will be a praisworthy dish; now you KNOW! Love this book!

Customer Reviews:
A Wonderful Collection of Recipes.......2007-06-08
This book is a great compilation of only the best baked goods from state and county fairs. I'm surprised other reviewers gave this cookbook negative ratings. It doesn't matter that the recipes are from unknown fairs, they are first place winners and champion baked goods. They don't need to be tested by the author or have comments from the author because the majority of these recipes have already been tested by a panel of judges and won awards which makes them unique. Having three children in 4-H, baked goods are usually not judged on appearance alone but mostly on taste. Yes, I may be slightly biased because my son's grand champion cake is one of the recipes in this book, but I know how much effort he put into his cake and how many judges it went through before it was declared a grand champion cake. It didn't look perfect, but the taste was exceptional!
If you only have room on your shelf for one more cookbook, make it "Blue Ribbon Recipes"!.......2007-05-13
Cookbook editor and developer Barbara Greenman has compiled an impressive collection of 693 recipes, each of was entered into an state or county fair and went on to win an award. The featured and thoroughly 'kitchen cook friendly' regional recipes range from appetizers and salads, to main dishes and entrees, to breads and pastries, to desserts and preserves. From Apple Cider Pancakes; Light and Health Ratatouille Soup; Salmon Salad Sandwich with Aioli; and -Saucy Cranberry Meatballs; to -Swedish Rye Bread; Rosemary Focacia; Creamy Apple Puffs; and Pecan-Fudge Sheet Cake, "Blue Ribbon Recipes" is a very highly recommended collection of savory, satisfying, dishes that are presented in a ring-binder style cookbook that will lay down flat for easy use. If you only have room on your shelf for one more cookbook, make it "Blue Ribbon Recipes"!
i loved this book!.......2007-05-04
I can't believe the other two reviewers are talking about the same book...I love this book! Some of the recipes are a little wacky, granted, but it's a wonderful collection of recipes from fairs both big and small from around the country.
YUCK!.......2007-04-20
Hideous! Many recipes from teensy little fairs no one ever heard of (e.g., neither state nor county fairs), with oddly named prizes rather than blue ribbons. Moreover, the recipes were never tested by the author, and bear no comments (neither her's nor the originators') about why they're good. This was a really hideous job just to make a buck. There are many outstanding blue ribbon recipe cookbooks, including one about to be published (which I haven't seen, but of which Amazon shows a glimpse, and it looks great). Don't waste your money on this loser!
What a disappointment!.......2007-04-19
Don't waste your money!
There are a number of incredibly wonderful blue ribbon recipe cookbooks available by such authors as Catherine Hanley, Margie Jensen, and Maria Polushkin Robbins -- which include the contributors' comments about what makes their recipes so special, and which were carefully tested by the authors, who added their own observations. Recipes from those books are unfailingly delicious; I have never been anything but thrilled with the results, and guests always beg for the recipes.
In contrast, this book doesn't include any comments from either contributors or author, who did not even bother to test the recipes. Many (if not most) are from small, unknown fairs (i.e., not blue ribbon winners from the state fairs!), with no clue as to how many candidates there were, or whether they scored most of their points for flavor or appearance (and I, for one, don't care about perfect appearance, so am solely interested in taste).
In short, this book was a humungous disappointment. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY! IF YOU WANT A WONDERFUL COLLECTION OF BLUE RIBBON WINNERS, DO AN AMAZON SEARCH, AND PICK A BOOK WITH TRIED-AND-TRUE FAVORITES.

The title says it all.......2003-08-22
This book is an excellent collection of Southwest American chile recipes. The recipes are divided by meals or usage into chapters including breakfasts, appetizers, salads, soups, vegetables, breads, main dishes with meat, main dishes without meat, accompaniments, and sweets. The recipes are at once creative and inspiring. While some of the recipes are clearly influenced by traditional New Mexican cuisine, such as sweet chile albondigas, some are of native American origin, like summer squash bake, still others are clearly 100% Midwestern American, like crusted green chile loaf. In any case, all of the recipes are united by their common use of chiles.
For reading pleasure, there is a short section on tips, facts, and fancies- -did you know that wild chiles on the bush are also attractive to birds? At the back of the book you will find a glossary, and for those who don't live in New Mexico, a list of chile suppliers. There are no pictures, but that's OK- -more room for recipes. If you like chiles, you need to have this book.
"must have" chili recipes..............2000-08-15
We always buy green chilis from Hatch, New Mexico each year which we roast, bag and freeze for use during the year. I wanted to find new ways to prepare these. This cookbook contains many yummy recipes that I can hardly wait to prepare.

Book Description
This collection explores eighteenth-century theories of international market competition that continue to be relevant for the twenty-first century. "Jealousy of trade" refers to a particular conjunction between politics and the economy that emerged when success in international trade became a matter of the military and political survival of nations. Today, it would be called "economic nationalism," and in this book Istvan Hont connects the commercial politics of nationalism and globalization in the eighteenth century to theories of commercial society and Enlightenment ideas of the economic limits of politics.
The book begins with an analysis of how the notion of "commerce" was added to Hobbes's "state of nature" by Samuel Pufendorf. Hont then considers British neo-Machiavellian political economy after the Glorious Revolution. From there he moves to a novel interpretation of the political economy of the Scottish Enlightenment, particularly of David Hume and Adam Smith, concluding with a conceptual history of nation-state and nationalism in the French Revolution.
Jealousy of Trade combines political theory with intellectual history, illuminating the past but also considering the challenges of today.

Book Description
Already a longtime hit in Japan, "Iron Chef" is taking over America-and this is the first and only official guide to "the culinary equivalent of the Friday night fights" (Orange County Register).
Each episode of this "oddly addictive"* show features a cook-off between one of the valiant Iron Chefs and a guest chef bold enough to challenge him. With pro-wrestling style theatrics, bad dubbing, and high-intensity plate-by-plate commentary, "Iron Chef" has boiled over into a bona fide phenomenon.
The book-first published in Japan but with added material for the American audience-features full-color photos, an episode guide, recipes, interviews with all the Iron Chefs, and much more. The heat is on...and the fans' mouths will be watering for this authentic insider's guide.

Iron Chef: The Official Book.......2006-11-20
I enjoyed the information in the book and all the pictures. I was hoping for more recipes.
Top entertainment, ok book.......2006-10-26
Iron Chef is the most ingenious TV show ever created, well, the REAL original IC show, at any rate.
The over-the top cheesy quality, the bad-English dubbing, the dumb air-head actresses(who sometimes come up with surprising smart comments); the exotic ingredients, and of course--the challenges. The stuff that no normal person would ever cook, or dream of touching on his dinner plate.
The combination of sports arena quality and the sideshow of Prices Right, equals=valuable hours of your life spent on watching TV!
the book is very in depth, though not quite a "cook" book, the only true thing it lacks it the statistical point. Who won the battles, etc.
I am very disappointed in Food Network for not continuing to buy more Iron Chef shows and or continuing to show the reruns; and not to make them into DVDs....instead they're being despots and forcing us to watch that horrible horrible horrible mutant child that came out of that so called "chef".
Yet again, an original anime/comedy/whatever show is ruined...just like how they mangled Godzilla. the "Other Thing" show lacks the corny flavor, the second commentator (Fuki-San was awesome), the REAL chairman, a REAL Chef, REAL ingredients; Fun challengers, (ok, Ming Tsai was funny, but that's it);my respect for Ming grew after watching that only good episode...he was funny, relaxed, self-assured and he kicked Flay's butt!!
awful musical score (sure the soundtrack of the ONLY incarnation of IC was from.....movie, Backdraft), pathetic judges (they ALL annoy me, for some reason).
watching the "OTher Thing" gives me a stomach ache, a headache....and I keep rambling.
SCOUR THE EARTH for lost videos/tapes/bootlegs of the ONLY IRON CHEF. If you're a true fan, don't even bother watching "Other Thing".
"If my memory serves me correctly....this book will give me recollections of funny and good times."
+150 on the Wow meter for the show, 6+ for the book;
-100 on the Puke-O-Meter for "the Other Thing"
Die-hard Iron Chef fan's souvenier.......2006-07-20
This is one of the few but worthwhile memento's of the now defunct TV series, Iron Chef. While some fans are disappointed that there are few recipes, the book is about the show and the people. Interviews abound from not only the Iron Chef, but the cast and crew as well. There is even a statistics chart in the back detailing the wins and losses of Iron Chef battles. If you still love Iron Chef and want something memorable, this is the book.
A Magnificent Book for Fans.......2005-09-09
If you have ever had anything more than a passing interest with Iron Chef before, this is certainly a book worth picking up. The book itself is packed with gorgeous photos, plenty of interviews, and a staggering amount of information about the show itself, particular episodes, and even recipes. Granted, most people won't necessarily be using this book as a typical cookbook, but the added recipes just feel like a bonus on top of an already excellent book.
All in all, I was delightfully satisfied with this gem. Also, if you're looking for a bargain and are not sure about the book itself as far as quality is concerned, I highly suggest taking a look at the Used section here at Amazon. I picked up my copy that way for a fantastic $1.98 last year for pristine quality and even now the prices for the Used copies are in the same ballpark.
good comprehensive overview of the series.......2005-03-04
This is a rather nice little collector's item for fans of the show and even those who are just simply curious about its hype. It provides a fairly informative history of the show, nice illustrations throughout, recipes, "battle" ratings, and even restaurant location and information for selected chefs on the show.
The best sections were the personal interviews from various contributors to the show.

A 'must' for college-level students of transportation and urban planning.......2006-08-17
Edited by Gabriel Roth, whose expertise includes twenty years of service as Transportation Economist for the World Bank, Street Smart: Competition, Entrepreneurship, and the Future of Roads is an anthology of essays by learned authors discussing both theory and practice for private, market-based alternatives for road services from licensing vehicles and drivers to management of government-owned road facilities to franchising, outright private ownership, and more. America's current road transportation system is beset with traffic congestion, unsafe conditions, high costs, political corruption, environmental degradation, pork barrel pet projects and much more. In an era of rising national debt, Street Smart is more needed than ever as a source of ideas for more economic and safer means to look after transportation infrastructure.
Endorsement for Street Smart.......2006-05-16
Private turnpikes were commonplace in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries but they eventually succumbed to competition from railways and onerous government regulations. Street Smart makes an eloquent and convincing argument that the time is ripe for the private sector to make a comeback with a boost from modern electronic tolling technology and innovative contract designs. Chapters are organized into five parts that complement each other nicely. Early chapters explain why market forces allocate resources efficiently and describe various roles for the private sector in supplying road infrastructure and services. Later chapters describe the history of private roads and some recent, encouraging, developments with privatization, and suggest alternative ways forward in the course of privatization. Written by leading economists, engineers and other professionals, Street Smart is essential reading for academics, policy analysts and policy makers, as well as firms contemplating involvement themselves.

Pillsbury Best of the Bake-Off Cookbook: Recipes from America's Favorite Cooking Contest
ASIN: 0670032514

Book Description
Competitive cooking isn't limited to The Iron Chef. All over America, amateur chefs cross spatulas at more than a thousand competitions covering numerous states and a pantry full of ingredients.
Following a small group of contestants for a year on the contest circuit, journalist Amy Sutherland introduces us to well-known cookoff luminaries as well as some of the most bizarre cooks and recipes at local and national contests across the country-from the Great Garlic Cook-Off to the National Chicken and National Beef Cookoffs, from the World Champion Jambalaya Cooking Contest to the Pillsbury Bake-Off, the Holy Grail of competitive cooking. When the fanatics gather-be they chiliheads or barbecue fiends-and hunker down at the hot plate, it can be a recipe for delight or disaster as attitudes get spicy and tempers flare. Bursting with humor, Cookoff is an entertaining and in-depth look at a quirky, cutthroat, and (sometimes) delicious world.
Customer Reviews:
A fun look at the world of cookoffs.......2007-07-10
I loved the glimpse I was given into the cookoff world. I had a hard time keeping track of all the different contestants in the various cookoffs, but the author did a good job keeping my interest.
A good read.
must-read for cooking contesters!.......2005-09-08
The author is snippy and unflattering to her subjects, but she provides valuable information for anyone who wants to try their luck in a cooking contest.
And you thought competitive cooking was boring............2005-05-02
I admit it. I am not much of a cook. I rarely ever cook, and my husband and kids are better for it. Nonetheless, I loved this book. I read the stories of culinary expertise with great envy, yet with great fascination. The dedication and the creativity of the so-called "contesters" who live and breathe the competitive cooking lifestyle astounded me. This is a great study of average people who find their skill in not-so-average arenas. I actually found myself tensing up as the contests covered would come to an end, hoping my favorites would do well (and the snobbish ones would not). Piece of advice: if you like the suspense of it, don't flip ahead to the end of the chapter, as the winning recipe is there in plain sight. I expected to bump into some slow spots, but there were none to be found for me. This book kept my interest through to the end. There are personalities to love, and there are personalities to hate, just like any good book. Who knew a book about competitive cooking could be so thrilling? And who knows? I may just attempt to whip up one of the winning dishes. Maybe there's a chef somewhere in me, after all. Read this book, and you will never watch "The Food Network" the same way. I may even create my own recipe to enter into the competitions. Pickled Eggs and Spam, anyone? No? Maybe I'll stick with fast food for now.....
Delightful.......2004-06-12
Cookoff: Recipe Fever in America is a delightful book, especially for readers who enjoy cookbooks and cooking magazines. Amy Sutherland, a journalist from Maine, got invited to the Pillbury Bake Off rather serendipitously and decided to go, pretty much as a lark, figuring that it would prove an amusing piece of Americana. Sutherland was surprised to discover an entire cookoff subculture, with an entertaining cast of characters and no shortage on drama. Her experience at the Bake Off inspired her to spend over a year traveling around the country, spending time at cookoffs and time with contesters: cookoff professionals, some of whom have won substantial sums of money for their devoted cooking efforts. Each chapter focuses on either a particular cookoff, or a particular aspect of cookoffs, such as what happens when cheating occurs. Sutherland is a wonderful writer, able to keep you in suspense (and actually make you care!) over who would actually each cookoff. I really enjoyed reading this book; it is pretty much a refreshing change from anything I have read in a long time. I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys reading about food. Enjoy.
contestant observations.......2004-03-16
An otherwise interesting book is marred by the author's snippy and mostly unneccessary comments about the contestants and/or their spouses. It did nothing to add to the book-but detract it did.

Very informative, great piece of work.......2005-07-21
The book is written by a person who lived in the Route 128 area and in the Silicon Valley. Besides the great insights and fantastic scholarly work, the book reflects the experience of seeing the development of both regions, not only through the eyes of a scholar, but also through the experiences that can only be gained by "being there."
AWSOME!.......2001-09-23
The best book I have ever read concerning High Tech culture. Everyone should read this book to better understand how to motivate info exchange and networking among our society and world.
california cool.......2001-03-03
saxenian argues that silicon valley's competitive advantage is the vast network of small firms that compose silicon valley and cross pollinate each other. she compares the valley to the route 128 area in boston which she classifies as detrimentally hierarchical, even puritanical.
Excellent Structural Analysis.......2000-02-21
Contrary to one of the other reviewer's comments, the importance of this book is in showing precicely that it is not the "endemic" culture of Silicon Valley, but rather the innovative institutions and networked relationships in Silicon Valley that explains the region's success. A great contribution to the literature on embeddedness and network forms of organization.
Very well written, easy to follow and insightful........1999-10-10
Although she is a bit partial to the Silicon Valley area, the author presents the information in a very "down to earth", easy to read fashion - not too technical or too dry.

Book Description
Clustering as an economic policy concern has become increasingly fashionable. The authors of this book shed light on this subject on which there remains remarkably little understanding, and even less agreement, regarding what clusters are, what they require for success and what impacts they are likely to have in different contexts, locally, nationally and globally.
Clusters and Globalisation brings together scholars with different perspectives and theoretical groundings, and from different disciplines, to consider conceptual arguments and case study material. In doing so the volume identifies key characteristics and requirements of the forms of cluster that are especially significant for the attainment of economic success in a globalizing world.
This unique critical analysis of clusters in the framework of globalization will strongly appeal to students and academics with an interest in economic development, public policy and globalization. The book will also be of great interest to researchers in policy agencies concerned with local economic development and the design of cluster policies.
