1 out of 5 stars Speaking from experience.......2007-09-07

I would like to give this book no stars at all, but that seems impossible. Any person who spread material like this is not of God, nor is he trying to further his work. My reason for making such high claims is that having done some study myself, (But, in no way am I prefect) find that this books contains a lot of truths, but mixed into them are flat out lies. As the Bible teaches Satan is the Father of all lies, so if this book claims these lies as truth in which it has it is not of God. I have many friends who are Mormons, and have even studied with the "Elders" of the Church. These lies and hypocrisys are very hurtful to me, and to those who I call my friends. I fell this books goal is not to bring Mormon's to the truth, but to distingush their belief in God. What great can be said of such a thing. I could not even finish reading it, because it made me feel sick, and even confused. As it is written in Galatians 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. Don't allow yourselves to believe such things as misinterrepted scripture, no happiness will come from it.

5 out of 5 stars very informative.......2007-08-28

This is a great book if you are looking for side by side info. As a Christian, I found it to be a well presented book. I felt they were careful with the facts. Very useful. The fact two people who had mormon background had input was a plus.

5 out of 5 stars They've been Unmasked ... now what should we be doing ?.......2007-07-16

This is another important book for those who have Mormon friends and/or family. These good people need to hear the truth, not just what their leaders have convinced them is the truth.

1 out of 5 stars Are u kidding me?.......2007-03-26

I have never met a person who has ever become too familiar with "Mormons" that has not come to respect them. If u want to learn more about Mormons, ask them, cuz anything from anyone else is totally biased.

3 out of 5 stars NOT A REVIEW.......2007-01-05

this is not a review of the book, and i hope i haven't changed its rating, but i feel that i must clarify something about what other people have said.
i grew up a Morman, now i am an atheist (sort of). I also attended a methodist church for about five years while i lived with my aunt. Mormons are NO different than any other christian religian except the fact that they are heavily family oriented and other churches are act like a lunatic and scream hallelujiah oriented. That was kind of a joke.
Bassically it comes to this, Mormon doctrine sometimes contradicts the Bible. So What? the BIBLE contradicts the bible. the last supper doesnt have the same events in any of the four gospels. i know, i've read them, in NIV and KJ versions. the Mormons only use kj.
therefore if mormons aren't christians because they're doctrine contradicts the bible, then what are christians because theirs does too.

Book Description

This collection of documents in medieval history is designed to accompany the recently revised MEDIEVAL EUROPE: A SHORT HISTORY by C. Warren Hollister and Judith Bennett. However the diverse selection of sources also makes it a useful supplement for courses in Western Civilization. As in previous editions, this reader continues to provide a lucid and approachable introduction to each of the documents and a special chapter devoted to visual sources in medieval history. In addition to these hallmark features, the fourth edition includes new Internet resources, thought questions at both the reading and chapter level, and a more geographically diverse range of readings.

3 out of 5 stars An Excellent Medieval Study.......2005-09-07

Medieval Europe: A Short Sourcebook, 4th Edition is a useful companion book to Medieval Europe: A Short History as it provides complementary information that fleshes out the private writings and the people who made history by providing the back story to everything that is reported as having taken place in the Middle Ages. Contained within these writings is the arc of development of the Catholic church for both its supplicants and leaders, as well as the elements of man's attitude towards the women in their lives and what they considered proper behavior, what they feared, and what they subsequently attempted to control.
The book begins with writings detailing the transition from a Roman World and ends, fittingly, with the Age of Contradictions. One is privileged to read of Hypatia, the female philosopher who was martyred by being stoned to death for being an intelligent and outspoken female philosopher. Another female who was subjected to tyranny by her husband but nonetheless was able to read and leave written instructions for her son is Dhuoda. She is mentioned in passing in Medieval Europe: A Short History, but it is in A Short Sourcebook that one is able to fully understand not only Dhuoda's plight but also her faith and her suffering. And these tales of faith are only some of many that tell of how faith affects the lives of the common people as well as the more religious as evidenced by letters between the faithful. While this book does not provide all the answers necessary to fully comprehend Medieval Europe, it is useful as a supplement to the primary textbook, and even takes some of the literature one step farther as well as providing seemingly mundane regulations that provided guidance during a time of great expansion.
As noted in the Sourcebook, Medieval Europe was "a cycle of faith, fervor, and fortune" that "reinforced medieval piety and strengthened the medieval economy" and helped "inaugurate Europe's first great age of expansion" (173). The information provided in such passages as "The Customs of Newcastle-upon-Tyne" and the "Regulations for the May Fair at Provins" allow the reader to uncover how an expanding continent was attempting to maintain control over day-to-day business. In addition, historical documents such as "The Magna Charta" and "The Strasbourg Oaths" are included which the editors utilize to flesh out and complete the historical picture contained in the A Short History. There are other historical aspects that are a treat to read such as "The Greenland Saga", which documents a small portion of Viking history. This particular saga and that of "The Russian Primary Chronicle" illustrate the impact other countries had on Medieval Europe, information that is only briefly discussed in A Short History.
The role of women in medieval society, particularly in Carolingian Europe, was not one of equality, even if those women were in leadership positions in the church. Their presence, brought about through necessity, was abused by neglect at the hands of their husbands, and even some of the church leaders. What one will find in this book is that through the writings provided by a varying group of women one is offered a similar yet diverse view of how women were treated. And by studying these writings, one will find that it is the women who willingly locked themselves up in an abbey who were in a much better position to maintain their own freedom than the women who were locked up by their husbands or caretakers. And one can see this through the excellent examples of letters from the women in the abbeys, through those of educated women such as Dhuoda, to a morality play provided by a nun, Rosswitha, and on to a piece entitled Memories, by Dona Leonor Lopez de Cordoba who has the talent to both infuriate as well as make one feel sorry for her. And with regards to writings about the church, one can see the direction in which the Catholic Church was proceeding by reading the "Charges of Heresy Against Jan Hus," plus several charges of heresy against others, as well as their treatment of Joan of Arc.
Taken either together with A Short History, or on its own, A Short Sourcebook is a valuable piece of information that will help any student become more familiar with the mindset of Europeans living in the Middle Ages, as well as completing the historical picture of how society went about its business, whether it be merchants, the government, or the Catholic church.

4 out of 5 stars Fascinating.......2005-08-19

This is an excellent and comprehensive collection of sources from the Middle Ages in Europe. Divided into thirds (a section each on the Early, High and Late middle ages), it has a solid representation of source materials on religious and political life. Its only shortcoming (and the reason why I could only give it 4 stars) is its lack of materials about (or by) women - given the attitudes, expectations and limited opportunities this is not surprising; still, I wish there was at least some attention given them.

4 out of 5 stars The end of the US hegemony?.......2002-07-26

Chaos and Governance in the Modern World System distills a systematic process out of the past Dutch and English hegemonies and applies it to the current American hegemony. The authors state that the end of a hegemony cycle always coincides with financial crisis. The current accounting scandals and stock market turmoil could be symptoms of the end of the American hegemony. The book goes into detail into the history and mechanics of each hegemony and describes the transition between each of them. In the conclusions, Asia and more particularly China is pointed out as the next potential hegemon.

The underlying theoretical canvas of the book makes sense. It gives a historical and scientific look on the mechanics of globalisation. The book is of course academic in nature, which doesn't always help readability, when having to navigate through references and footnotes. It is only in the conclusions that a more linear tone is taken. Next step for me, exploring some books on the future hegemon: China?

5 out of 5 stars A fabulous book explaining our current global trouble.......2001-04-02

In a simple and concise way, Arrighi et al explain the rise and fall of the Dutch, English and American power in the modern world system (Since 1600 AD). In a 400 years sweep they show the evolution of geopolitics, state, finance, social classes and corporate structure in the rise and decline phases of each power.

After they described the processes which have affected the evolution from Dutch to English, English to American and the present weakening of the American power, book provides several possibilities for the future based on previous experiences. One of the conclusions is that corporations remain bound to their country of origin and that a corporate-led world will not survive the United States power, just like previous types of corporations did not survive English or Dutch demise. Another warning is the danger that the last phase of power, which is finance based and characterized by globalisation of finance always ends-up in a disaster: 1772-1773 crash in London, 1929 crash in Wall Street. Collapse of NASDAQ, trouble in Japan, California electricity could be the symptoms of this last phase of American power.

An essential book to understand the process of change and how to possibly adapt to it.

5 out of 5 stars A thoughtful survey of 300 years of global power.......2000-10-23

Chaos and Governance in the Modern World System is a wonderful and comprehensive sweep of 300 years of power, politics and high finance. It is also a helpful counterpoint to some of the more gloating books filled with triumphilism or dire books of environmental doom-saying often found in when surveying the field.

Book Description

A mere eighteen months after the Sandinistas came to power in Nicaragua in 1979, Miskitu Indians engaged in a widespread and militant anti-government mobilization. In late 1984, after more than three years of intense conflict, a negotiated transition to peace and autonomy began. This study analyzes these contrasting moments in Nicaraguan ethnic politics, drawing on four years of field research in a remote Miskitu community and in the central town of Bluefields. Fieldwork on both sides of the conflict allows the author to juxtapose Miskitu and Sandinista perspectives, to show how actors on each side understood the same events in radically different ways and how they moved gradually toward reconciliation.

Since 1894, Miskitu people have faced an expansionist nation-state and have participated as well in a U.S.-controlled enclave economy and a civil society dominated by U.S. missionaries. The cultural logic of contemporary ethnic conflict, the book argues, can be found in the legacy of Miskitu responses to this dual subordination. While resisting the Nicaraguan state, Miskitu people drew closer to the Anglo-American institutions and worldview. These inherited premises of "Anglo affinity," combined with militant ethnic demands, motivated the post-revolutionary mobilization. Sadinista revolutionary nationalism, in turn, had little tolerance for ethnic militancy, and even less for Anglo affinity. Only with autonomy negotiations did both sides begin to address these underlying causes of the conflict. Though portraying autonomy as a major step toward peaceful conflict resolution and more egalitarian ethnic relations, the nook concludes that this new political arrangement did not, and perhaps could not, fully overcome the contradictions from which it arose.

The book offers a critique of existing approaches to ethnic mobilization and to revolutionary nationalism in Central America, putting forward an alternative framework grounded in Gramscian culture theory. This permits a grasp of the combined presence of ethnic militancy and Anglo affinity in the Miskitu people’s consciousness, a previously unexamined key to Miskitu collective action. The same notion of "contradictory consciousness" illuminates the Sadinistas’ thought and practice: They too espoused a determined political militancy fused with assimilationist premises toward Indians, which created contradictions at the core of their egalitarian revolutionary vision.

Charles Hale gives a plea for activist anthropology; not letting the anthropologist remain aloof from the people that he or she is studying. He does that to some extent in his work with the Miskitu. However his avowed affinity with the Sandinista cause causes him to miss much in the process. He ignores some of the more glaring Sandinista atrocities that would paint the Sandinistas in a less pleasant light than Hale presents. In placing himself as a sort of go-between between the Miskitu and the Sandinistas, he contradicts the very premise he is espousing. He doesn't want to alienate himself from either group, so he never really becomes totally trusted by either. He wants to have his cake and eat it too.
This is a good look at the 1980s Nicaraguan situation, activism issues aside. Hale delves into the movements and motivations of Sandinista policy and Miskitu resistance. This reads more like a book written by a journalist however. The personal engagement of an anthropologist presenting a people and exploring their life is missing, making the book read like a reporter getting a scoop rather than an anthropologist doing participant observation. I think the book would have been much better if Hale just took the chance of choosing a side and not worrying so much about trying to appear neutral.

4 out of 5 stars Four Strong Stars--Mostly for Comedy Value..........2007-01-12

200+ Ways the Quran Corrects the Bible caught my attention both because of Jews for Allah's description of it as "the apocalypse of literature" and because of the subtitle's claim to show "How Islam Unites Judaism and Christianity." According to Ghounem, it's simple, Jews just need to agree with the Quran that Jesus is the Messiah (not only a carpenter), and Christians merely need to agree with the Quran that Jesus is not God (but only a prophet). Voila! the "beautiful and melodius method, the Quran brings harmony."

I must agree with the two points of commendation given the book by the famous Al Azhar University, that the book is "beneficial information and a pleasure to have read." The benefit, though, is not because the information is true (it's mostly not), but because we nonMuslims can gain insight into the false impressions that some Muslims have about the Bible, which in turn can lead to improved discourse. Also, the Bibliography, though only 3 pages, has a few good sources, and if Muslims were to read these, they could get a fair picture of orthodox Christianity, in contrast to the strawman of Christianity that Ghounem presents in the book.

And as for the "pleasure," instead of the contemptuous tone of other Islamic apologetics books such as those of Ahmed Deedat, Ghounem talks of unity and polite outreach of Muslims to nonMuslims. Not only that, the book gave me great joy from laughing both because of its you-must-be-dreaming assertions and with its unintentionally funny use of the English language, humorous in the same way as are non-native English speakers Borat or Eddie Murphy's African prince in Coming to America. With some of his English faux pas, Ghounem actually ends up saying the opposite of what seems to have been intended, such as when he uses "apologetics" instead of "apologists" saying, "Bible Universities offer an increasingly popular degree of trying to solve Bible issues. Instead of these young men and women spending years of their lives to become apologetics..."

In conclusion, I found the book to be largely a misrepresentation of Biblical beliefs but fun and helpful in increasing my understanding of misunderstandings. The only reason I do not rate it higher is because I'm pretty sure its comedy value can be topped by Ghounem's later book, which I eagerly await to read, "101 Ways Islam Gives Love to the Bible"--now that ought to be 5-star hilarious.

5 out of 5 stars Christianity has no intellectual legs to stand on-This book explores why.......2006-09-22

This is an excellent book that exposes the deep flaws of Bible. Before, reading this book, I was under impression that some elements of truth might have been left in the Bible. Now, I find that the Bible and thus Christianity have no intellectual legs to stand on. It is amazing how still in this day and age people blindly follow this religion of idolatry masquerading as "monotheism". Do these people think? I recommend this book for all those people who think Bible is the word of God and Christianity is a monotheistic religion.

definition of monotheism:
According to Dictionary.com Unabridged (v 1.0.1):
monotheism
-noun
the doctrine or belief that there is only one God.
[Origin: 1650-60; mono- + (poly)theism]

According to American Heritage Dictionary
The doctrine or belief that there is only one God.

According to WordNet - Cite This Source
monotheism
n : belief in a single God [ant: polytheism]

So it is very simple:

1+1+1 != 1 therefore not monothesim
1 = 1 therefore monothesim

Thus Christianity is not monothesim. It is in fact polytheism.

5 out of 5 stars Book Is Not Anti-Christian.......2006-05-25

Finally a book that deals with the problems in the Bible that many of us have taken for granted. The more reviews that I read that are negative, the more I feel the readers are insecure in their own Christian beliefs. They seem to fear that this book might just be TRUE. However, Ghounim is very positive and is trying to build bridges rather than preach some sort of Islamic evangelisim. Good job Mr. Ghounim!

5 out of 5 stars Buy this book now...........2006-05-05

The anti-Islam reviewers are frightened that some Muslim finally took the time to challange not only thier accusations, but thier faith as well. The author of this book makes it clear that this is not an attempt to offend Christians, and warns Muslims not to go out and simply use this to "convert" others to Islam. Rather, this book should be used to gain a better understanding of why Islam came in the first place (mainly to restore what the church corrupted). The author presents verses from the Bible, then provides the Christian response, and refutes them both with a verse from the Quran. This book has been praised by Al-Azhar University, one of Islam's most prestigous universities. So the author's interpretation of the Quranic verses are legitimate. Strongly recommended.

1 out of 5 stars A trillion ways the Bible corrects the Koran.......2006-02-01

This book is absurd. The Bible ( from Genesis to Revelation) annihilates the 52 surahs. NO WHERE in the Koran are there predictive prophecies about literal space time events as there are in the Bible. The Bible has proven itself to be divine through thousands of hidden codes at ELS intervals beneath the original hebrew. The Koran does not contain such codes.

The Lord Jesus Christ said, "I am the way the truth and the life. No one comes to God but by Me. No one means No one!!!!!

To say the Koran "corrects" the Bible is to call Almighty God a liar because He states the Bible is inspired. Also, to say the Koran corrects the Bible is to defy the Pasion of the Christ, the crucified King!!!

I would urge the author of this book to respond to the ONE TRUE GOD and JESUS CHRIST whom He hath sent. For Jesus said, "unless you believe that I am the Messiah you shall indeed die in your sins."

      Book Description

In the historical literature on mission, this book stands out for its detailed examination of the organizational dynamics that gave shape - and brought enduring success - to the Evangelical Missionary Society at Basel. A first-rate account of the early Basel Mission on the Gold Coast of West Africa (present-day Ghana), this volume takes readers inside the mission itself, revealing its dynamic, though sometimes contradictory, methods of motivation and discipline and how they impacted effective evangelism both at home and abroad. Working from archival records, Jon Miller details the collaboration across class lines that made the mission possible, and he shows how basic pietist beliefs about authority and obedience were the source of both the mission's strengths and its most serious internal weaknesses. Also included are two dozen photographs, a foreword by Richard V. Pierard, and an afterword by Paul Jenkins.

5 out of 5 stars Shocking - will challenge your comfortable world views.......2001-07-19

When I read this book 10 years ago I was stunned. Only in the last couple of years it seems have even the BBC started to discuss issues such as East Timor, the World Bank etc in a realistic manner.

If you you feel that your world is the 'civilised', 'good', 'honorable', 'tolerant', 'fair' world... then read this; especially 'The Escalating Arms Race' chapter. It will shock and probably disgust you. You will read about genocide aided and abetted by the 'good and civilised' world and it's charitable organisations and barefaced hypocricy that knows no bounds.

Best of all - this is all discussed by a man who knows. 30 years of experience: "speaking from the experience of over twenty years as a principal administrator with the OECD in Paris, the FAO in Rome, the United Nations Development Programme in Africa and working on consultant missions elsewhere with UNESCO and the World Bank".

Read it! And vote wisely. John I White
