Book Description

This updated and substantially revised second edition, like its predecessor, integrates a discussion of the latest theoretical developments with a comprehensive review of empirical work. Designed for upper-level undergraduates and graduates in industrial economics, there are complete treatments of the basic oligopoly models that are the bread and butter of theoretical industrial economics (Cournot, Bertrand, and extensions; horizontal and vertical product differentiation), of models of strategic behavior as well as of the determination of market and firm structure, and of the literatures on collusion, advertising, and the economics of innovation. Stephen Martin also provides a complete review of empirical tests of market performance, from Bain to the 'empirical renaissance' and beyond.

contains expanded treatments of: hotelling's spatial model oligopoly with quality differentiation empirical evidence on entry and exit the analysis of firm structure presents new discussions of: the classical view of the Cournot model strategic substitutability and complementarity representative consumer models of product differentiation the Kreps and Scheinkman model with product differentiation the New Empirical Industrial Organization, Solow residual, and event study approaches to the analysis of market power deterministic and stochastic models of research and development With a more cohesive writing style, reduced size, additional invaluable information, and new problems to solve, the second edition of Advanced Industrial Economics is a key text in industrial economics.

5 out of 5 stars Great book, (0 stars to Amazon.co.uk).......2005-02-18

I bought this book 4 weeks ago and I am still waiting. I just keep receiving emails saying that they are having some delay so in 1-2 week they will dispatche the book.
If you really need this book go and buy it someplace else.

5 out of 5 stars Good Starter of I.O, comprehensive, self-satisfactory.......2000-02-16

No doubt, one of the best for those interested in graduate level of industrial organization. Readers can learn about major business strategies in industrial markets and its welfare implications. Leading theories, major empirical analyses, and added author's view against too influential Chicago ideas will give@excellent perspective of the progress in the field. The appendix of game theory is written to make the book self-satisfactory.

    Book Description

This book describes and demonstrates how SAP ® APO can be used to tackle real optimization problems arising in industry. In a unique combination it deals with the aspects of model-building as well as with the implementation in commercial supply chain management software, SAP APO being a typical example of an advanced planning system (APS).

The authors address readers involved in optimization projects in which SAP and, particularly, SAP APO are implemented in companies. These are the project designers, projects leaders, the IT personnel inside the companies, but also operations research practitioners, supply chain management consultants, and decision makers in the area of tool selection for optimization tasks.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Nice Overview, Not a Manual.......2007-01-11

This is a good overview of the SNP Optimizer and other modules in APO. It also goes into other optimization models (outside SAP), and has valuable examples of these in industries where optimization modeling long preceded SAP and SAP APO like the chemical and petroleum industries. Walking through the decisions of how these clients decided to either convert their models to an SNP implementation or use the external model as a bolt-on (the authors and SAP people prefer the term "plug-in") was enlightening.

This book will save you some grief in the decision-making process up-front, but it is not a how-to manual. At the time of writing the authors did not know of many live implementations of the SNP optimizer. The focus is on pre-implementation decisions and implementation. There is a lot of talk about what in SNP is technically possible, but not advised and could yield an impractical implementation. The book provides a good perspective for experienced practitioners of optimization modeling.

4 out of 5 stars Good overview of SNP Optimizer.......2006-08-24

Good overview of SNP Optimizer. Does not get into details, but does show explain how optimizer works. Good examples of implementations for clients in various industries. Strictly concerned with SNP Optimizer. Good reference material but would not use on an on-going basis.

    Book Description

“I found this book a real treat. It has the rare quality of being both profound and light at the same time. . . . It has the potential for appealing to a large audience, including managers, consultants, trainers, students, and researchers. For some of them, it will make a real difference in their life and work. Few books do.” -- Boas Shamir, Hebrew University of Jerusalem People interested in developing their own leadership potential, or the leadership potential of those around them, will find a wealth of knowledge in Full Leadership Development. The author approaches the concept of leadership as a system, not only as a process or a person. His framework is based on what he defines as the full range of leadership: people, timing, resources, the context of interaction, and the expected results in performance and motivation. He contends that when a leadership system is optimized, it in turn optimizes the vital force of each individual, thereby enhancing the collective force of the entire organization. The quality of the relationships among the leaders, their peers, and followers is a source of enrichment for all involved. Bruce J. Avolio models his theory for leadership through his writing style. The author pulls together his experiences and perspectives from all aspects of his life, providing a rich foundation for his theories. He uses personal examples, anecdotes, and cases to communicate his range of experience as a consultant, trainer, and researcher, as well as a traveler, spouse, and parent. The result is a conversational and accessible book that engages the reader with its interactive style.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A good read; both for scholars and practitioners.......2002-03-06

Avolio has done a good job in discussing how the full-range theory (transformational and transactional leadership) works in practice. The book is thought provoking and at times, funny, really funny. But, it is serious enough for a scholar to read, but not too dry to distance casual readers. As a leadership researcher I have found the book very useful and would recommend it for purchase.

    Book Description

This book is intended as an introduction to classical water wave theory for the college senior or first year graduate student. The material is self-contained; almost all mathematical and engineering concepts are presented or derived in the text, thus making the book accessible to practicing engineers as well.

The book commences with a review of fluid mechanics and basic vector concepts. The formulation and solution of the governing boundary value problem for small amplitude waves are developed and the kinematic and pressure fields for short and long waves are explored. The transformation of waves due to variations in depth and their interactions with structures are derived. Wavemaker theories and the statistics of ocean waves are reviewed. The application of the water particle motions and pressure fields are applied to the calculation of wave forces on small and large objects. Extension of the linear theory results to several nonlinear wave properties is presented. Each chapter concludes with a set of homework problems exercising and sometimes extending the material presented in the chapter. An appendix provides a description of nine experiments which can be performed, with little additional equipment, in most wave tank facilities.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good accessible book on water wave mechanics.......2006-04-05

The objectives of this book are to introduce the reader to the fundamental understanding of water wave theory and to apply the basic physical principles to the coastal and ocean environments. The prerequisites for understanding this book are knowledge of fluid mechanics, basic calculus, and differential equations. Thus it is presumed that the student is an engineer, and probably an ocean engineer. This book is really quite accessible. I am an electrical engineer and I have been using it to help perform animations and visual effects regarding water and its properties. Its clear examples have been quite valuable in turning seemingly complex equations into actual physical phenomena that can be measured. I consider it a steal at its low price considering its content. Also, it is good as a textbook since it contains plenty of homework problems at the end of each chapter.
    The table of contents are:
    Introduction to Wave Mechanics
A Review of Hydrodynamics and Vector Analysis (Eulerian and Lagrangian view, Navier-Stokes Equation)

    Book Description

The Project Management Office (PMO) is a rapidly emerging concept in project management that has evolved in terms of its application, sophistication, and proven results. Most literature on the subject focuses on a specific facet or purpose of PMO. The Advanced Project Management Office: A Comprehensive Look at Function and Implementation provides an all-inclusive description of the PMO and allows project management professionals to select the features most appropriate and relevant to the issues at hand, while keeping the full PMO picture in perspective. The authors illustrate how the PMO can be used to reduce costs of projects, decrease time to market for new products, increase corporate profits, and ensure project success. This reference covers all aspects of PMO in a format that is easy to read and understand. It discusses the motivations for adopting a PMO, including project performance, project manager competency, the organizational desire to excel, and much more. Both short-term and long-term functions are identified and discussed. WBS-like structures are developed for use in the process of evaluating project performance during the life-cycle of the project. Ideal for senior project management professionals and as an advanced project management training program, the book presents two related models that deal with the evaluation of project performance from the vantage point of the client as well as the project team. With so many industries becoming project team driven, The Advanced Project Management Office will help project managers ensure project success and improve their company's bottom line.

    Customer Reviews:

    1 out of 5 stars Disapointment.......2005-07-07

As a PMP and member of a new PMO attempting to establish the value and credibility of a PMO within our organization I found this book to be a bitter disapointment. This book was singularly lacking in practical advice as the to implementation of a PMO. Regarding the subject matter, there was nothing "Advanced" about this book at all.

1 out of 5 stars Sadly overpriced and irrelevant.......2003-05-08

In spite of its claim to "illustrate how the PMO can be effective in reducing costs of projects, decreasing the time to market for new products, increasing corporate profits, and ensuring project success," this small, overpriced book actually does none of these things.

A collection of unrelated articles, all written in a dry, overly academic style, the book totally fails to address the proposition that a Project Management Office (PMO) adds value to an organization. There are many statements to the effect that "the PMO can ..." perform this or that function, but no assertions about the function itself, or whether it can just as easily be performed in organizations that do not have a formal PMO.

It is surprising that more than half of the eight chapters have no relationship to PMO functions at all. They discuss various project management issues, some of which are interesting, but all of which are better covered elsewhere in the literature. These topics are not what one expects when purchasing a book purportedly discussing the PMO function.

The book is completely devoid of real world examples, so we are left with the authors' assertions as to the efficacy of their ideas. There is also a paucity of real action items. The chapter on "Implementing the PMO" obsesses on where this group should report in the organization, and has no practical step-by-step advice on how to go about actually creating a PMO. This chapter does, however, contain an interesting, albeit irrelevant, discussion on managing "Projects with Virtual Teams."

As someone charged with actually creating a working PMO in a large organization, I was extremely disappointed with this book. It offers almost no practical information on this topic.

5 out of 5 stars The need for a Project Management Office.......2002-08-31

This is an excellent, comprehensive treatment of what a project office, or project management office should be. Anyone considering forming a new PMO, or wanting an assessment of an existing PMO, should read this book. Use it as a calibration checklist.

5 out of 5 stars About *project*, not *program* management offices.......2002-08-26

his book is about setting up a project management office, not a program management office. Although to many the distinction is either subtle or moot, there are key differences. A project management office is an organization that manages a single project and is usually disestablished after the project is complete. A program management office is an organization that is either established to manage a portfolio of projects or a major contract that has a complex statement of work requiring a number of simultaneous projects. A program management office can also be a permanent organizational function that provides continuous oversight of all projects from start to finish.

The forgoing distinctions do not diminish the value of this book, but merely set the expectations of potential readers. In fact, this book contains a wealth of excellent advice about establishing and managing a project office. It also goes deep into details regarding required skills, roles and responsibilities. I especially liked the discussions on project performance management and maturity models.

Another point in this book's favor for project managers who want to establish a project management office the right way is other books about "PMOs" are more focused on program management, which is too broad in scope.

I like the way the author approaches the topic, which is structured and clearly described, and the way the book covers all of the major issues, factors and details.

5 out of 5 stars It is about the essence of PMO.......2002-08-06

The authors did an outstanding work in presenting this book in simple terms and easy-to-read style. They used Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) analogy to explain concepts of Project Management Office and make it easy to comprehend the complex subject. It is a book that covers Project Management Office (PMO) concepts in great detail. The book is a useful reference to establish and improve the perfomance of PMOs.

    Book Description

Job and Work Design equips readers with a sound understanding of research, theory, and the practical aspects of job design. This volume critiques the theory and research that provide the foundations of our current understanding of job design, pointing to a need for methodological improvements and a broader conceptual focus. The authors examine recent innovations in manufacturing technologies, techniques, and philosophies and how these affect work design and research and practice. The authors also look at wider trends in manufacturing and elsewhere, such as teleworking, downsizing, the development of a contingent workforce, and the changing composition of the workforce. The volume describes how the redesign of work has implications for wider organizational systems (such as human resources and information systems) as well as implications for multiple stakeholders (such as supervisors, support staff, management, and unions). In addition, it suggests ways to effectively manage the work redesign process, including key stages involved in redesigning work, some useful tools and methods, and the change agentÆs critical role. The book concludes with some final thoughts that draw together arguments regarding the past and future of work design theory and practice. Job and Work Design will be of interest to students and professors of management, organizational studies, industrial/organizational psychology, public administration, social and personality psychology, sociology of work, and gender issues.

This book provides an extensive look at both the history and current use of job design in organizations. The authors stress that the environment in which organizations exist today is substantially different from that in which job design theory evolved. Numerous examples of job design in organizations are provided and an emphasis is placed on the diverse options available when designing jobs. Overall this book adequately portrays the current state of job design theory in organizations.
