Book Description

The Handbook of Tibetan Buddhist Symbols is a portal into the rich, multifaceted, and profound symbolism of Tibetan sacred art. Robert Beer provides a deep and encompassing insight into the vast array of symbols and attributes that appear within the complex iconography of Tibetan Buddhism. The succinct descriptions that accompany his detailed line drawings reveal the origins, meanings, and functions of these symbols. Beer unravels the multiple layers of symbolism and meaning contained within the iconography, affording the reader a panoramic vision into the deeper dimensions of this sacred art. Drawn largely from Beer's monumental work The Encyclopedia of Tibetan Symbols and Motifs, the meticulous brush drawings in this book depict all of the major Buddhist symbols and motifs, including the various groups of auspicious symbols; cosmological symbols; natural and mythical animals, such as the dragon, garuda, and makara; the entire assembly of ritual tantric implements and weapons; magical and wrathful symbols; handheld emblems, attributes, and plants; esoteric Vajrayana offerings; and mudras, or ritual hand gestures.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Decoding the Tibetan Buddhist Code.......2007-10-18

Tibetan Buddhist symbolism is extremely complex, yet in this volume artist/Buddhist Robert Beer makes it accessible and understandable. Beer divides the symbolism into identifiable categories such as "Eight Auspicious Symbols","Five Attributes of Sensory Enjoyment","Cosmological Symbols","Main Ritual and Tantric Implements" and "Wrathful Attributes and Offerings." It's a user-friendly handbook.

Beer sheds light on more obscure symbolism-such as the khatvanga (tantric staff),the magical weapons of Shri Devi (the Great Goddess),and the gzi stone. He explains it within the framework of Tibetan Buddhist philosophy and practice.

To his credit,Beer doesn't gloss over the more gruesome aspects of Tibetan Buddhism. He explains why wrathful deities are depicted wearing garlands made of skulls and severed heads,or holding intestines in their hands. For some, the wrathful deities are seen as a way of sublimating violent tendencies, while others see them as worshipping ugliness. Beer leaves it to the reader to judge.

"A Handbook of Tibetan Buddhist Symbols" is a perfect guidebook to Tibetan Buddhism. It's written for the layman, the newbie, and is engrossing reading.

the book was very well put together and has alot of useful info on buddhist art.

5 out of 5 stars An exceptionally fine book.......2004-12-09

This volume took Robert Beer more than 10 years to complete, and one understands why. As far as I know it is the only book on the subject with such superbly crafted illustrations, each meticulously drawn in pencil-thin, lucid detail. There are a huge number of these drawings, and the well-structured text is informative, thorough and scholarly, without being dry. It is an eminent work of very high quality and a joy to read for any Buddhist practitioner, art lover, or just for curiosity. It is surely a classic reference volume. Modesty must have compelled the author and editors to give it the diminutive title 'a handbook' - it is indeed much more. Read it an enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Especially informative for connoisseurs of Tibetan art.......2003-11-17

The Handbook Of Tibetan Buddhist Symbols by Robert Beer (who has studied and practice Tibetan thanga painting for more than thirty years) is a straightforward reference guide to the meaningful symbolism of sacred Tibetan art. Black-and-white illustrations depict all the major Buddhist symbols and motifs, while the text offers depth and interpretation behind the meaning and usage of each. The Handbook Of Tibetan Buddhist Symbols is enthusiastically recommended for inclusion into Buddhist Studies and especially informative for connoisseurs of Tibetan art.

5 out of 5 stars Compact Reference.......2005-08-26

With so many phony TCM practitioners going around cheating uninitiated Westerners with their exotic claims and theories, it's good to have books like this which only provides the facts.

This small book manages not only to list but even provide some details on each commonly used Chinese herb. The herb's energy, taste and organs affected are all mentioned. It's definitely a good buy for anyone interested in learning more about one aspect of TCM as it is.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended home reference on Chinese herbs.......2001-03-11

Don't let the small size of this book (328 pages in a paperback format) fool you; this book is absolutely packed with information on the healing herbs used in TCM --traditional Chinese medicine.

Author Reid has written a number of books on TCM. This herbal reference is well-written because it includes: the common Western name of the herb, the Latin name, the romanized Chinese name and the name in Chinese characters.

Packages of Chinese herbs may be labeled with any of the above, so this is really helpful. There is also a wonderful section on the principles of Chinese medicine and how the traditional herbal preparations are made. Some of the common combinations of Chinese herbs are included along with how to prepare them. There is a resource reference in the back. Highly recommended to anyone wanting to learn more about traditional Chinese medicine.

Book Description

Since publication of the first edition in 1998, Chinese History: A Manual has become an indispensable guide to researching the civilization and history of China. Updated through January 2000, the second edition discusses some 4,300 primary, secondary, and reference works, an increase of 1,500 titles over the first edition. The temporal coverage has been expanded to include the Republican period; sections on nonverbal salutations, weights and measures, money, and furniture have been added; the chapters on language, etymology, people, geography, chronology, warfare, leishu, food, and the Chinese world order have been thoroughly revised; and the subject index has been enlarged to include 2,500 technical terms.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Peerless Resource for Chinese Historiography.......2002-11-30

Wilkinson's 'Chinese History: A Manual' is an essential volume on the bookshelf of any serious Chinese historiographer or scholar of Chinese history. Since the publication of the first edition, this book has very much become a standard reference for Chinese history. Note, though, that this is not a textbook on Chinese history, although one can certainly learn a great deal about Chinese history from it. It serves better as a handbook on Chinese history, an informative reference one consults to discover resources for the study of divers aspects of Chinese history.

The first section provides an excellent introduction to Chinese history, and the methods of Chinese historiography. Topics such as language, geography, demography, chronology, statistics, etc., are introduced, and reference works such as dictionaries and encyclopaedias are discussed in some detail. This section provides much of the groundwork necessary for study of Chinese history.

The remainder of the book is devoted to the description of the primary and secondary sources of historical documents, categorising them by genre, era and topic. Some 4,300 sources and references are described, from pre-Qin periods to the modern era, making the book an excellent first-port-of-call for identifying historical texts and documents. Wilkinson's work is especially helpful because the resources are not merely presented as lists, but their context is described, and often, some evaluation of the quality, worth, reliability, ubiquity, etc., is presented. Difficulties and obstacles encountered in research are mentioned, and solutions are often suggested.

This is a revised version of the 1998 edition, enlarged to include republican period. An already excellent manual was improved upon, and there is little I can say to criticise this edition. The book is physically well bound and the print is clear and of a good size: no magnifying glass is necessary. One particularly laudable feature of this book is that where English is employed for terms particular to Chinese culture or history, the Chinese term is given throughout, and the name of texts and sources are always given in Chinese. Moreover, romanisation is generally accompanied by Chinese characters, elminating the often frustrating guesswork involved in trying to figure out the characters corresponding to a romanised phrase. My only complaint is that, although Pinyin romanisation is used consistently, the tone marks are generally omitted.

In short, then, I have nothing but praise for Wilkinson's work. It is an indispensible guide to the study of Chinese historiography, and constitutes an excellent resource for anyone at all interested in Chinese history. Although written as a handbook for research, I have found the book suited to casual browse, and I often use it as a coffee-book table: I open it to a random page, and, more often than not, I find something that strikes my fancy and piques my interest. All in all, this book is a valuable resource seldom to be met with elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars An invaluable guide to all aspects of traditional China.......1998-11-10

This is an annotated resarch guide and bibliography, as described by the publisher, but has much more: introductions to the sources available for the writing of traditional Chinese history (up to 1911); shrewd evaluations of reference and research tools involved; explanation of how the study of the field developed; brief summaries of the state of research on a wide variety of topics, including:origins of Chinese characters, history of Chinese food, how to handle dates and chronology; how to find out where places are and who people are... well, you get the idea. The MANUAL is useful not only for primary research, but also for finding articles and secondary references on many topics (my own bibliography, CHINA (Clio: World Bibliography Series, 1997) lists mainly books). The term "Manual" in Wilkinson's title really describes it, i.e. something which must be "at hand" for anyone working in Chinese history, and a "must" for libraries.

Book Description

For the first time in the West, Chinese tui na massage techniques are brought together in an easy-to-use method for whole-body health

The Handbook of Chinese Massage integrates classic Tui Na (meaning push and grasp) techniques used in the Orient for centuries into a revolutionary method for health and well-being. Traditional Chinese massage practitioners use specific individual techniques to treat a wide variety of ailments--techniques demonstrated in this book. But after years of study in China, Indonesia, and Thailand, Maria Mercati has taken these separate techniques and combined them into a whole-body treatment never before seen in East or West. Tui Na massage stimulates the flow of qi, vital energy, in healthy individuals as well as sick ones. It requires no special equipment and is simple enough to do at home or in a chair at work.

The Handbook of Chinese Massage includes step-by-step instructions for each of the fifteen unique tui na techniques, many of which are unfamiliar to Western massage practitioners.

More than 100 color photographs and diagrams clearly show where to place your hands on the body and where to find the key meridians.

2 out of 5 stars not what i wanted.......2007-01-07

this book showed much of basic TCM theory with little technics, and technics was not much different than swedish and deeptissue technics. tui na technic vary, some said 12 different techs, some said up to 35 different techs. it would'nt matter how many techs it use as long as it shows how to use different techs and why it use it. how to transit one techs to another techs. this book lacks latter part.

3 out of 5 stars Not too much.......2006-02-25

When I have this book in my hands first time I liked how many photos and how easy to follow it may appear. Well now I am studing 1500 pages 5volumes book just on theory of the Classical Chinese Medicine (unfortunatelly not available in english.. just Czech language) compiled from moct basic old chinese canons.. So my view is.. trying to explain yin yang, 5 elements (which in fact are not any elements) on several pages and then explain meridians and points in rest of the book is.. well just making nice product for sale. Well you may say that business is about it.. so yes but than..

5 out of 5 stars Excellent reference , must buy.......2003-07-04

I am a massage therapist and found this book to be very helpful as reference for the non-western portion of the National Certification Examination for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork. It had lots of information on meridians and the five element theory. It was also written quite clear and was quite easy to clear. I also used the followng which is also on amazon:
The Ultimate Study Guide for the National Certification Examination for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork: Key Review Questions and Answers by Patrick Leonardi (Vol 1, Vol 2, Vol 3).
The last 3 books were right on target with the type of informatioin ask on this national test. All 4 books are must buys.

5 out of 5 stars Great techniques.......2000-04-13

I loved the different techniques in this book. It teaches the the law of the five elements and it presents detailed diagrams of the meridian channels.

4 out of 5 stars Starter book.......1999-11-22

Ms Mercati gives the reader a good overview of this style of massage. One problem many books on Eastern medicine concepts is that the scientific paradigm of qi, yin-yang, etc is difficult to grasp for someone who has been educated on Western scientific principles. This book starts with an introduction to the Eastern principles in a more understandable, concise fashion. This makes it good for a massage therapist who wants to expand his repertoire. At times, the anatomical descriptions are inaccurate eg: referring to the malleolus as an "ankle bone"; however, the informal style of the book keeps it interesting and readable, as well as informative.

In ancient China, barefoot doctors traveled from village to village without concern for financial or personal gain. Their aim was helping people stay healthy and in good spirits, explains author Stephen Russell, who for the past 20 years has considered himself to be the modern-day "barefoot doctor." Applying the principles of ancient Chinese Taoism, Russell dishes out irreverent advice for how to find peace and prolong life while keeping one's Donna Karan designer clothing and urban lifestyle.

The first step, claims the barefoot doctor, is to recognize that we're all urban warriors, engaged in a spiritual struggle between the forces of light and darkness within us and around us. Rather than get into "inner street brawls" with these opposing forces, Russell suggests that readers learn to live in balance by following one's Tao or "The Way." Russell humorously yet wisely illustrates how readers can follow the Tao, including short chapters on "Manners," "Condoms," "Cults, Gurus," "People Surfing," and "Intuition." This is a somewhat glib but surprisingly sensible spiritual guidebook for those who like their teachers to be streetwise as well as enlightened. --Gail Hudson

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent and Funny!.......2005-10-03

I bought this book several years ago and I thought it was one of the best books I have ever read on a "spiritual" subject. The Barefoot Doctor is extremely funny and brings the complex and mysterious subject of Taoism down to a level that anyone can understand. There are also wonderful and simple exercises included in the book. I gave my copy away to someone I felt needed it. But, just recently I purchased this book again, because it is that good. I have also ordered 4 of his other books from Amazon.UK, as they are hard to obtain here in the U.S.

5 out of 5 stars Taoism that fits!.......2002-11-15

I found this book to be engaging, humorous and informative. I just picked it up one wet afternoon and couldn't put it down. This is the first book that I read by the Barefoot Doctor and it related Taoism to my world in a way that other texts couldn't, while making me look at life in a new and positive way. You can read it straight through from cover to cover or dip in at random according to your mood. I have read it many times and just keep getting more from it. Once you've read this one, you'll want to read more - good thing he's just written his 5th book - Liberation.

5 out of 5 stars Millennary wisdom made easy and useful.......2002-02-03

This book is a very clear way to relate to a Taoist way of living. I found it very helpful in most difficult moments. I'm thankful with the author for writing it. It's a lot of fun too, even while speaking about the deepest matters.

5 out of 5 stars The Ancient Tao Explained in A Most Modern Way.......2000-11-17

If you're curious about Taoism that's good. A dedicated scholar is even better. But if you can't manage to do that in your hectic daily life, behold this book! It explains the Tao in an easy going style with plenty of humor and lots of good old common sense. Even concepts that seem otherworldly will start to make sense when you read it a second time. It is thorough, yet manages to avoid intimidating the reader with archaic language. There are many books on the tao, from the spiritual to the scholarly. This one manages to bring it straight to the people with no frills. And while some reviewers think it advocates drug culture, I believe the author is patently aware that you cannot preach to most people or convince them to stop self destructive behavior even if they know you're right....so it is best to arm them with practical knowledge and let THEM do the changing. And that is the essence of the Tao. Ever changing--ever learning. Some will read this book and hungrily move on to more serious books on the Tao, while others will want to keep it in their backpack and think on it for a long time. I am doing both.

5 out of 5 stars The Tao for those who don't want to ditch the laptop.......2000-10-31

I like my life and my stuff! I don't want to cloister myself on some mountain top and eschew the modern world. This is a great book for all the citizens of the real world who want to explore the Tao, but don't want to become great scholars. Taoism is about being and experiencing, not about pouring through ancient tomes for answers other people have found. If you'd rather get a few pointers on how to be a little more Tao, get this lovely little book. It is truly a diggable and easily portable guide to life on the cooler side of the fence.

Book Description

Written primarily for business managers and government officials, this is a comprehensive and extremely timely handbook on how to successfully initiate and implement joint ventures and direct investments in China. The authors combine in one volume an appreciation of the nuances faced in the negotiation of U.S.-Chinese joint ventures, an examination of the investment environment in China and an assessment of its past traditions, present policies, and emerging problems. Case studies of a variety of actual joint ventures are especially valuable for readers involved in or planning to open negotiations in China. Several chapters assess the impacts of the events in Tianamen Square on foreign direct investment in the country. The book opens with two chapters which examine the reasons for China's open policy and the responses of foreign investors to the new policy. A group of chapters then explores the country's investment, cultural, and legal environments and their likely impacts on joint venture negotiations. Turning to an examination of Chinese markets and production capabilities, the authors assess consumption patterns, decision making, customer/supplier relations, local sourcing problems, transportation, the availability of skilled labor, management, and R&D. They go on to analyze the contributions of foreign direct investment, including the role of transnational corporations, and present a step-by-step guide to negotiating a joint venture in China and implementing the agreement reached. Finally, the authors look at prospects for development and modernization in China, particularly in terms of the trend towards recentralization following the Tianamen Square upheaval. In addition to business development managers, students in international business programs will find Direct Investment and Joint Ventures in China an indispensable resource.

        Book Description

This volume serves as a guide to all facets of China study: from advice on choosing an appropriate literary dictionary to finding the most recent yearbooks that offer statistical data about the contemporary economy. China Bibliography does not restrict itself to one particular `discipline', but considers the development of Chinese civilization as a whole, from its imperial beginnings to the present, and therefore demonstrates how one would find information about Chinese history, literature, religion, linguistics, collectanea, as well as present day PRC economic and political policies. Because this book also explains how bibliographical data on China has accumulated over the last 300 years (including within China itself), it also may help the reader understand the significance of a particular type of reference work.

        Book Description

The Chinese Herbalist's Handbook is a new tool for prescribing and modifying herbal formulas. This book makes the practice of herbs easily accessible to Chinese medical practitioners and students. For practitioners who rely upon patent herbal formulas, but would like to custom-tailor formulas to each patient's unique needs, this book demystifies the process, with instructions and exhaustive cross-referencing and indexing.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Thorough reference work.......2003-12-14

This valuable guide tells you everything about Chinese herbalism and complements the many book on Western herbal medicine.

It provides more than 500 herbal prescriptions according to symbol differentiation after a diagnosis has been established. Each formula is detailed with extract formula names, ingredients, dosages and contraindications plus special preparation methods.

More than 400 individual herbs from traditional categories are organized into clinically relevant subcategories and information is provided on adapting these formulas for the needs of individual patients.

There are charts listing about 400 individual herbs according to preparation considerations, cooking needs, internal versus external use, special forms available, contraindications and unusual requirements.

In addition, these 400 herbs are cross-referenced alphabetically by their botanical, pharmaceutical, Chinese and common names to facilitate use by practitioners that come from various training backgrounds.

The Chinese Herbalist's Handbook is a masterpiece that makes herbal healing easily accessible to all practitioners of Chinese herbalism. One of its best features is that it enables formulas to be custom-made for the individual needs of patients.

1 out of 5 stars Great book, but lousy print quality.......2003-04-08

The contents are great and well-organized, and the small form factor makes it convenient.

However, this entire book looks like a PHOTOCOPY of the earlier edition! It's as if the publisher (apparently different from the original publisher of 1st edition) didn't want to re-typeset the book, so they either shot the printing plates directly from the earlier edition print, or decided to run it through a photocopier and then bind it. Some text originally written inside gray boxes are now very difficult to read, and the detailed text is blurry.

On quality alone, this is not worth the $... they are asking for. This is really unfortunate, since the authors have done a great job putting out a convenient reference guide. I would be wary of other publications by Lotus Press, if this is indicative of their commitment to quality. The authors should seek a new publisher.
