Easy access to the world of Management.......2006-03-08
This book serves as a good introductory text to the interesting and vastly complex field of management. As with anything comprehensive, a single book cannot cover (in depth) all that needs to be covered and thus, some one who aims for detailed information on ERPs, supply-chain management, Porter's 5 Forces, Fredrick Taylor's early thoughts on scientific management, or Maslow's hierarchy of needs... will need to read the respective books to satisfy demand.
However, if you are looking for a general overview of the subject of management, Richard L. Daft's book is a great way to acquire that knowledge. Written in an entertaining and colourful manner, the book introduces most of the essential ideas of modern management & organizational theory playfully and with ease, providing a sound foundation on which further studies can be based and which will ultimately facilitate access to more complex materials.
In my eyes an excellent book for its intended target group: A recommended read for those new to the discipline of management.
One of the best in its field.......2006-01-17
In my opinion this is one of the best text books on management I read. I am using it extensively with undergraduate students for whom the English is a foreign language, and still they do not encounter any difficulties, either in understanding the text or the cases.

rate the book I bought from amazon.......2005-10-04
The buyer made the purchase so complex! I am very anger about that.
Book Description
Understanding Today's Electricity Business presents a comprehensive 216-page overview of the U.S. electric industry. As with its gas industry companion, this book presents a straightforward and easy-to-understand look at how the industry operates - from who are the major players, to the various deregulation models, to the physical electric system, to how industry players make money and manage risk. The perfect resource book for anyone who needs to understand the "big picture" of the electric business. Like no other book on the market today!
Customer Reviews:
Very good introduction, but not deep enough.......2006-12-15
I found that the book gives very good introduction to subject - I should have bought it a year ago, when I just started working for a utility. However, I expected it to be more dense and deep, especially when dealing with rate design issues. Anyway, I would recommend the book to anyone who begins to work in the industry, since it covers a very broad range of themes and therefore helps to level field for "electricity illiterate" person (well, I certainly was!).
Dense but Good.......2006-02-14
Shively writes a good overview of the electric power industry, which is critical to our economy and environment. The book is dense, not for the general reader (who would much prefer "From Edison to Enron"), but it offers solid background for insiders wanting to understand the scope and changes associated with the power industry.
Understanding Today's Electricity Business.......2005-10-21
I work for a utility billing and CIS provider and needed a reference book to enhance my knowledge of our focus industry. This book was great, it covers all relevent topics in good depth from generation to how utilities make money under different business and regulatory models. It is surprisingly easy to read given the dryness of the topic. I highly recommend it.

Old and busted.......2007-05-05
I have always found this book to be cumbersome, difficult to navigate, poorly organized, and lacking in sufficient detail. But of course for years it was basically the only game in town, so everyone relied on it. Those days are over. I recently purchased Landscape Architectural Graphic Standards, and it is an outstanding book. If you're trying to decide which one to buy, definitely get Landscape Architectural Graphic Standards instead. And even if you already own Time-Saver Standards, do yourself a huge favor and buy Landscape Architectural Graphic Standards anyway. It covers everything that Time-Saver Standards does plus numerous other topics, all with much better explanations and details. To top things off, it has FAR more graphics and the entire book is better organized an easier to navigate than Time-Saver Standards.
Usefulness.......2006-07-16
As a practicing L.A., I have bought several McGraw-Hill Construction Books. I get a similar result each time: They seem on first look to fulfill the promise, but I found they don't well serve the need in real life. I get far better use out of Architectural Graphic Standards, and I'm looking forward to Wiley's Landscape Architectural Graphic Standards.
buy the book, forget the CD-ROM version.......2005-03-28
I've got the book and was hoping the CD-ROM would enhance using the book, but it doesn't. The content is very slim compared to the book, and the CAD drawings that are included are also of very limited use. Don't bother with the CD-ROM version of TSSLA.
This book is a must!!!!.......2004-02-06
A great book to have. It was a required text for my site technology classes. Kept referring to it. Lots of information. It should be on everyone's bookcase if you're a Landscape Architect student or already in the profession. I highly recommend it.

Book Description
Why is
1001 Ways to Reward Employees, with over 1.4 million copies in print, such an extraordinary bestseller? Because a little over ten years ago Bob Nelson took the seeds of an idea and turned it into something indispensable for business. The idea? That it’s not a raise that motivates an employee, and it’s not a promotion—what really sparks a person to perform are those intangible, unexpected gestures that signify real appreciation for a job well done.
Now, after having worked with thousands of organizations in the years since 1
1001 Ways to Reward. . . was first published, Bob Nelson presents a second edition packed with hundreds of new ideas and examples of how companies are using rewards and recognitions to boost productivity and keep their valued employees happy. Airplane mechanics are rewarded with balloons and pinwheels. Another manager calls his employees’ mothers and thanks them for raising such industrious children. There are ideas from the offbeat (The Margarita Award) to the company-wide (a quiet room) to the embarrassingly simple (a hand-written thank you note) to the wacky (the Laugh-a-Day challenge) to the formal (a two-week promotion to special assistant to the president). Each section includes no-cost rewards and low-cost rewards, both public and private, making this new edition an indispensable resource for making the person/achievement/reward equation work.
Customer Reviews:
Reward yourself- buy this book........2007-09-07
This book is great and works under the premise that you get the best effort out of people not by lighting a fire under them, but by building a fire within them. In short, its simply a collection of ways to reward employees for doing a good job. Its divided into 6 sections (day to day rewards, intangible rewards, tangible rewards..) so there's definitely a boatload of reward ideas to fit just about any work situation. Examples from companies across the United States make it a fun read as well. Also recommended: The Sixty-Second Motivator to learn the basics of motivating people.
Management Techniques that work........2007-08-13
Finding management and team building books in 2007 is easy. The problem is finding what works. Bob Nelson may not be the most prolific writer, but what he does write is usually of high quality, and 1001 Ways is no exception. I learned many new ideas that I was able to use right away. The results were startling. I was so excited that I showed the book to a friend that works in Human Resource at a large company. As it turns out, she had also read the book and agreed. This book will get you results.
1001 Ways to Reward Employees.......2007-04-02
User friendly, Great examples, works well in group discussions. If you want to examine your organization's recognition and rewards program this is an excellent source.
Decent ideas.......2007-01-04
This book has a lot of ideas on how to reward employees. Most of them only seem possible at larger companies or with the right type of people. Still worth reading for ideas.
It says "Money isn't everything" - but apparently it is.......2006-12-24
I own a charity-focussed website, and have over 300 volunteers who donate their time and effort towards the site's efforts. We deliberately channel all the extra money we can towards charities. I greatly value and appreciate all of the volunteers efforts and try to do my very best to show them my appreciation. I bought this book looking for ways to help those volunteers to feel cared for and respected.
You get about 225 pages worth of one-paragraph blurbs describing specific ways that companies have recognized their employees. Many of these, despite the book's subtitle of "low cost ideas", are rather expensive. Leo Burnett provides $3,000 in adoption assistance. Kollmorgen Corporation takes its people for ocean cruises. Domino Pizza holds company-wide Olympics, giving away $4,000. I just don't have that kind of budget.
Still, as with most management books, if you go through the details, you can pick out a few great ideas amongst all of the ones which are entirely unworkable. You can make a hall of fame of outstanding employees. Create awards for individuals who go above and beyond the call of duty. Recognize great contributions immediately, and encourage people to offer up suggestions on how to improve things. Find ways to help your employees become healthier and happier.
I really did appreciate many of the suggestions, like offering cash prizes, would help companies with spare cash. I think I was disappointed because right at the top of the book it says "money isn't everything" and "low-cost ideas". There were a few inexpensive ideas at the beginning of the book - and then it promptly went into things requiring a fair amount of money or are simply cash bonusses. If I had money to burn, then I could *easily* think up thousands of ways to reward my volunteers without any help at all. That would be easy! The balancing act is that I do *not* have a lot of money - but want those volunteers to know how incredibly valuable they are. That is the challenge, and I had hoped this book would help me with that. The book claimed on its cover that it would ... but that wasn't quite what it offered.
For those with a fair amount of money, the book will be a great help. However, I think that it should remove the "money isn't everything" title at the top, given how many of its suggestions are either cash awards, or costly items.

Business Essentials.......2007-04-03
This book came faster and in way better condition than I thought it would. Was very pleased with the item.
A Good text book.......2007-02-10
This book gives a good introduction to a person new to the business field. It has a good ammount of definitions and of business terms and passes the necessary information in a well organized way.
good text FOR SALE!.......2006-06-20
i have one for sale, brand new for $35!email heather_ellis84@yahoo.com if interested.
More of a reference book........2006-02-26
This book does not have a lot of depth to it - and it is somewhat dated (each year a bit more), but there are some handy examples that make it a worthwhile read... especially for the price.
An O-K text, with a few gems........2004-12-16
For your basic introductory business class, this book is good. It offers a lot of vocabulary, and I can see why a lot of people would say the book has no depth since most of the information can be drawn from simply living the real world. (Unless of course you live in a refrigerator.) So why bother grabbing the text if I can get the same exact knowledge from life?
Well, in the beginning, end and throughout each chapter, tons of real life examples are woven in to illustrate each of the "business essentials." On top of that, real quotes from millionares, successful CEOs and entrepreneurs, and trusted business executives allows the average student a valuable glance into what makes up a smart business mindset.
What's my point? To study business, you need to study the principles that real professionals swear by. Texts written by "just" business professors who don't actually participate in the business world really just don't cut the chase. They're probably broke anyway. Now textbooks with information from successful people, that's what's going to make a student of business really churn out a beautiful future.
So while the material is very, very basic. The real life examples are awesome. However, these lessons can be taught by even better books by great people like Stephen R. Covey and Dale Carnegie. But if you do need a book chock full o' business vocabulary and basics, this isn't a terrible pick. And it certainly does spell everything out.

I've bought this book SEVERAL times and it keeps disappearing!...so be sure you HOLD onto your copy! I've used these activities for workshops, trainings, conferences, meetings...with all sorts of groups....adults and teens, leadership and prevention and alumni....etc. Great resource!
Did not buy this item.......2007-05-03

The best activity book.......2007-01-11
I'm a peer facilitator, and this is definitely the best group activity book that I've used. I've always gotten the best response from the activities in this book...they seem to be the most fun for the kids to do, while still teaching important lessons. The book is also very easy to read and understand.
My fellow Peer facilitators and I have about 25 different activity books to choose from, and this is always the one that we each try to grab every week before anyone else gets to it!
Great for church youth groups and leadership teams!.......2007-01-10
I use this book all the time at church with my youth group and with the adult leaders. I have found great mixers in the front of the book to help people get to know one another and in the back of the book the chapter called Open Up has good activities to get people to share about themselves more easily. The middle is filled with tons of team-building activities and it is easy to find something that fits my needs, from a short table game challenge for our weekly dinner to more involved teamwork tasks for our weekend retreats. I also find useful activities for leadership meetings to build community among the adult leaders of the youth group as well. This is the most user friendly and comprehensive team-building book I have found!
waste of time and money.......2006-11-10
Get Theater Games for the Classroom. It is a great community building system. It is not just about theater, read my review for that book, but again, DO NOT GET THIS BOOK!

Book better than the description.I can not even tell if its used.Really fast shipping.Honest seller. Thanks A+++++++
Hard to learn when you fall asleep..........2001-05-12
This book, although quite imformative and related to class discussions, was a little boring when I read it. Also, as it usually happens with business textbook it lacked "When good idea goes bad" examples. But, I guess, management never makes any mistakes... that's what you have to understand in it.

A quick and reliable way to build proven databases for core business functions
Industry experts raved about The Data Model Resource Book when it was first published in March 1997 because it provided a simple, cost-effective way to design databases for core business functions. Len Silverston has now revised and updated the hugely successful First Edition, while adding a companion volume to take care of more specific requirements of different businesses. Each volume is accompanied by a CD-ROM, which is sold separately. Each CD-ROM provides powerful design templates discussed in the books in a ready-to-use electronic format, allowing companies and individuals to develop the databases they need at a fraction of the cost and a third of the time it would take to build them from scratch.
With each business function boasting its own directory, this CD-ROM provides a variety of data models for specific implementations in such areas as financial services, insurance, retail, healthcare, universities, and telecom.
Customer Reviews:
Best choice for advanced data modeling........2005-07-20
If you will got this book, you will got perfect template model.
Is it worth buying a book for only one chapter?.......2005-02-15
Yes, it is. Because the other chapters have all sorts of useful content as well. This book covers Manufacturing, Telecommunications, Health Care, Insurance, Financial Services, Professional Services, Travel, and e-Commerce. Most companies, even if they aren't in those sectors, use the services of companies that are (or may do a little bit of them - offer insurance on their products, for example), and if you need to include these areas in your model, in more detail than was covered in volume 1 (the core Universal Data Model book), then this is the place to start. If you are in one of these areas, then the specific chapter has a lot of useful stuff (I have worked in Travel, Telecommunications and Professional Services), but it is well worth checking out the other models for ideas that can be re-used in your area.
A Great Time Saver!.......2004-08-05
The industry models defined in volume 2 have greatly accelerated our data warehouse/mart projects. We have used many of the pre-defined industry models for both internal and external projects. Again, a great time saver allowing us to "jump-start" our data projects.
Excellent, best practice industry data models!.......2004-03-31
This book provides an extremely comprehensive and useful set of industry data models. They have been a tremendous value to us by allowing us to reference best-practice designs on our projects as well as being able to save a great deal of time by not having to re-invent the wheel for standard data modeling structures. The models are extremely well thought out and offer insight into both effective ways of modeling as well as pitfalls to be careful of. The author shows extensive knowledge and expertise in the various industries that are provided. We have used many of the models from the health care, insurance, professional services and e-commerce models to give us a kick-start on data modeling projects as well as to double check our designs and make sure we didn't overlook anything important and we did end up modifying and improving many of our data models based upon ideas from this book.
The books offers an optional electronic download of the SQL for each industry for $400 but this is not at all necessary to benefit from the templates offered in the book because the book provides detailed data model constructs showing everything necessary to implement the models including primary and foreign key structures, attributes, relationship and attribute optionality, cardinalities of relationships, full explanations of the rationale behind each model, and even data examples for most of the models and attributes. We licensed the electronic download also and it saved us some time instead of having to manually enter the models from the book, however, the book without the electronic downloads is complete in and of itself, and it is amazing that one can buy an extensive library of industry data models for the cost of this book!
Also buy Volume 2!.......2004-03-09
This is an excellent companion to Volume 1 and well worth the cost for not only the book, but also the industry specific CDs. There is a separate CD for each industry specific data model, however it wouldn't take long for a person to buy just the book and end up spending more in man-hours trying to create the data model from the book, which isn't a very good use of your time. Buy the CD also.
My organization found this book a tremendous help on one of our projects. The time saved on just one project will more than pay for the book and CD.
This is not a how-to for data modeling, however I believe it should be purchased along with your how-to book if you are interested in learning
I know there are other universal data models available. However the others I've seen are either very simple, don't have a CD, and don't have near the content as these models, or they are unbelievably expensive.

Customer Reviews:
Valuable Traing Tool.......2007-07-21
This book covers all of the details that are so often left out while training waitstaff and associated restaurant employees. We use it extensively for initial training and reference.
Easy to Use.......2006-06-16
Opening a dining establishment is complex. There are many different things that need to be taken into consideration from food costs to training of employees. For those who have never had a restaurant before, the training of employees could be a little intimidating, especially when it comes to those who interact with the customers and whose service could make or break the business, the wait staff. This book takes the bewilderment out of hiring and training these very important people.
The book is comprehensive and follows a logical pattern which eases the reader into the business almost effortlessly. It is an all inclusive book which details different jobs which make up the wait staff from hosting to bussing. Most of the book is centered on service of the tables though. It explains everything from how to set the table to presenting the check at the end of the meal.
There is a special section on how to deal with the youngest of the customers as well as important issues which the customer does not see such as side work and dealing with customer complaints and the difficult customer. There are even tips on laws that regulate the industry such as alcohol and IRS laws. As with any other job in the restaurant, safety and sanitation is also a very important part. Taking the complexity out of hiring and training of these employees is bound to help everyone out.
Also in Spanish.......2005-07-14
Just a note to say this book is also published in Spanish for students and staff members
An excellent guide!.......2004-10-26
This is an excellent book. It's very thorough and the section on alcohol service was especially good. Highly recommend!
