Superb Reference Work.......2007-06-16
Richard Overy's "The Penguin Historical Atlas of the Third Reich" is a superb reference work. In just over 100 pages (not counting timelines and appendices) it provides an excellent overview of the Third Reich, working in roughly chronological order from the turmoil at the end of the First World War to the chaos and despair at the end of the Second World War.
The book is sectioned into seven parts: Each part contains a four-page introductory section followed by three to ten chapters further illuminating that topic.
The seven parts are:
I. From War to Third Reich, 1918-1933
II. Establishing the Dictatorship
III. Foreign Policy in Germany, 1933-1939
IV. Expansion and War, 1939-1945
V. The German New Order
VI. German Society and Total War
VII. The Aftermath
Each chapter that follows an introductory section is only two pages, yet there is an incredible amount of information packed into those two pages as easily understandable pie-charts, graphs, and/or maps are included. Many interesting photos and posters (or other propaganda) relevant to a chapter are also often included, although they are generally quite small.
The writing in each chapter and section is extremely well-done. Time and again the author deftly explains complicated matters in a few brief paragraphs.
The book is a handy reference on many of the social, economic, political, and military aspects of the Hitler regime. It could almost double as a mini-history of the Third Reich and certainly supplements any study of it. Highly recommended.
Plenty of info well presented.......2007-05-06
Comprehensive in its scope, dense in its content. Plenty of charts, maps, etc. More than enough information to get a global picture of what was going on with Germany from the end of the First World War to the end of the Second and its aftermath. It has about 115 pages plus another 15 of timelines.
The tone, however, is a bit dry, like a textbook. But I guess, being so concise, it would be difficult to make it more reader-friendly. A very good historical atlas.
A window into socio-political realm of the Third Reich..........2004-09-05
~The Penguin Historical Atlas of the Third Reich~ is an intriguing window into economic, military, social and political policies of the Third Reich. The best value in this nifty and succinct roughly 150-page historical atlas is putting the Third Reich into perspective and gaining an understanding of the policies and ideology that fueled its fanatical, albeit short-lived assent to power. With pictures, maps, statistics, and demographics, this book captures something that more voluminous books on the subject often fail to do. It frames economic, social, and political policies of the Third Reich into perspective while offering a history of the rise and fall of Nazi Germany. Overy even chronicles post-war plans for the New Order under the Reich. Hitler was obsessed with building colossal monuments (mostly those designed by Speer) and hoped to make Berlin into 'Germania,' the capital of the world. He aspired to implement massive network of road and rail to forge his new empire and tighten the noose over the conquered territories. The Germans hoped to harness their innate engineering ingenuity and the Nazi henchman laid out plans for a New Order under German dominance, which never prevailed. In reality, the so-called thousand-year Reich died in its infancy.
Ideas have consequences! In ascertaining Nazi ideology, as it relates to economic matters, most modern liberal historians who tacitly embrace Marxist-Leninist revisionist interpretation of the fascist phenomenon, ignore the Nazi affinity for socialist ideas. They're always apt to paint fascism in a caricatured mold of imperialism - capitalism serving the interest of capitalists - which is a dubious assessment to say the least given the anti-capitalism espoused by Nazi ideologues like Goering and Hitler for example. Richard Overy perceptively outlines Nazi ideology and its economic, political and social policies in practice. In reality, the Nazis on their own terms tended to see themselves as expositors of an authentic nationalism of the "German Left." (See _Leftism Revisited_ and Konrad Heiden's biography on _Hitler_ to corroborate this.) The anti-bourgeoisie ideological flavor and Byzantine corporatism of Nazi economic policy acted to undermine the industrial potential of Germany by sabotaging its productivity potential and ultimately alienating the Ruhr industrialists-the very class that the Nazis most needed to build and supply their war machine. As Overy notes, the Nazis occasionally tolerated the private sector only as practical expedient, though they didn't shy from sporadic intervention, economic controls, as well as outright confiscation. The industrialist Fritz Thyssen, frustrated with state prodding, lamented, "Soon Germany will not be any different from Bolshevik in Russia." Likewise, the Nazi economic chieftain, Hermann Goering was always out to gobble up private industry and incorporate it into the state-run conglomerate, the Reichswerke A.G. In précis, Richard Overy captures the historical developments as well as the economic, military, social and political policies of the Third Reich on the pages of this succinct and informative book.
chock full of info.......2002-01-06
If you are looking for a book that gives a tremendous amount of information, of the sort not often found in the books that primarily cover only the actual fighting, or the personality of Hitler and his henchmen, this may be the book you're looking for.
Most of the chapters run from 2 to 4 pages, often detailing subjects like Culture and Education, Farming in the Third Reich, Planning the Post-War Order, Exploitation and Plunder, and The Survival of Neo-Nazism. And do you like charts and graphs? Well, this book won't leave you disappointed.
All in all, well done.
Excellent and concise reference.......2001-12-27
I bought this book because I wanted to know about the actual mechanics of the Nazi government before and during WWII. This book contains a wealth of information in a very effective format. Each section is 2-4 pages with several maps and graphs, all clearly captioned, accompanied by a page or two of concise text. The book illustrates the state of Germany in the 20's and 30's, Hitler's rise, the path he took into the war, the Nazi plans for post-war Europe, and the overall cost of it all to Germany. Social, industrial, political, and military matters are all covered, in great detail (i.e. number of ships made per yer, broken down by type, number of women in the Nazi party '33 to '45, etc.). The text conveys the underlying situations behind issues of the day, such as Hitler's quest to "unite Germanic peoples" and the underpinnings of the Allies' pacifism in the face of it. I rocommend this book for anyone interested in that era of world history, novice or expert.

Book Description
Why are some countries poor? What can they do to turn their situations around? What happens to countries and individuals when they move towards being "modern"? What does it mean to "develop" and be "modern" anyway? What are the social effects of the processes of worldwide economic, cultural, and political integration called globalization? From Modernization to Globalization is a reference for scholars, students and development practitioners on the issues of processes of social change and development in the 'Third World'. It provides carefully excerpted samples from both classic and up-to-date writings in the development literature, as well as, a general introduction. Part One reviews formative ideas on the transition to modern society with brief readings from classical theorists. The second part addresses the modernizationists' discussion of how development changes people. The response from dependency and world-system theorists is reviewed in Part Three. The final section includes eight of the most influential writings on the social effects of globalization. Together, this represents an unprecedented compilation important of writings on international development.

S and S or Scholars and Students.......2000-03-29
Wonderful resource for a birdseye view of significant observations of the world changes for 2000plus. Stimulates individual thought and also excellent for a group discussion launching pad. Scholars and students will find it engaging and meaningful.
Book Description
Third World Cities is a thoroughly revised and updated edition of a classic text which examines urbanisation in developing areas. Using case studies of cities drawn from around the world, David Smith confronts three main questions: Is there still a Third World, does it have a common urban form and what is the relationship between urbanisation and sustainability? This text provides an invaulable introduction to the issues and processes of the city in the Third World.
Book Description
Drawing on a wealth of examples, this work traces the inception of sustainability within environmentalism and its extension into the realism of socio-cultural and economic thinking, policy and practice. This second edition has been extensively updated to firmly re-situate it in the development literature. There are also major new sections on: Third world development and tourism; the emergence of pro-poor tourism; the UN International Year for Ecotourism; and a new case study on a small-scale ecotourism program in Nicaragua.

Book Description
In the face of extreme weather events, desertification, and a rise in sea levels, governments and communities around the world increasingly recognize that the need to mitigate and adapt to climate change is urgent. The global agenda and negotiations focus on what governments, corporations, and institutions can do in the search for large-scale technological solutions. Yet women, men, and local communities all have roles, responsibilities, and interests that hold the potential either to harm or to benefit their environment.
This book considers the gendered dimensions of climate change. Ranging in scope from high-level global decisionmaking to local communities, the contributors examine the potential impacts of environmental degradation and change on vulnerable groups. They highlight the different vulnerabilities, coping strategies, and risks faced by men and women, and the socio-economic implications of changing livelihoods and insecurity. Examples of mitigation projects that have successfully integrated gender concerns are explored, as well as initiatives that have overlooked gender considerations and resulted in different outcomes for women and men.

Book Description
For all societies, the common denominator of gender is female subordination. For women of the Third World, the effects of this position are exacerbated by the legacy of colonialism, economic crisis, and patriarchal attitudes. Feminist critique has introduced the gender factor to development theory, arguing that the equal distribution of the benefits of economic development can only be achieved through a radical restructuring of the process of development. Now, the universal validity of both gender-neutral development theory and the feminist concepts of the post-industrial world are being questioned. In this book, Janet Momsen presents ten worldwide case studies which act as personalized examples of women's lives and coping strategies in the Third World. Her review of policy and practice raises questions about development planning and the empowerment of women. The book concludes with a discussion of the impact of environmental degradation and economic restructuring on women, with a description of the integral position of women in any solution to the current crises facing the Third World.
Customer Reviews:
Women and Development in the Third World.......2000-11-27
This book is an easy reader yet it has very interesting case studies that further strengthens the key ideas throughout the book.
An eye-opening look at women in development.......2000-10-02
Momsen gives the reader a detailed and data saturated presentation of the predominant reasons behind and the characteristics of discrimination against women in 3rd world countries. She makes salient points about local economic function and readily backs up her hypotheses with graphs and tables chock full of econometric goodness. But the book drags at times, especially when she delves into data doldrums. She rescues herself through a well constructed argument that helps neophytes like me understand the complex issue at hand. Overall, a good effort and extremely informative. Keep up the good work.
Katherine Shorey.......2000-10-02
Momsen's book describes the challenging atmospere in which third world women are living. Their unappreciated and unrewarded role in the domestic sphere has left them too unskilled and uneducated to enter the labor force. Momsen also explains possible causes for the historical gender inequalities that are illustrated throughout her book. She further investigates the role of the women and concludes that the oppression is socially, not biologically based.-Katherine Shorey
Information in Every Sentence.......2000-09-27
This book was excellent because it had very well thought out and factual information. I enjoyed and agree with, especially the thesis that the reason women are economically under men is because of the extra work they have becuase of their multiple responsibilities; i.e. housekeeping, child rearing, and a job. - Kimberly Campbell
Short Review.......2000-09-26
Women and Development in the Third World asks and answers questions about why women stand where they do in the developing world. The result of women's labor both within and outside of the home is explored in depth. The strength of this short book is its ability to keep the reader's interest, even while quoting hard data. This is not a feminist complaint about the subordination of women; it is an objective look at the role women play in the economies of the developing world.
Book Description
The wholly rewritten third edition of this widely acclaimed text continues to offer the most comprehensive and up-to-date description of how the global economy works today. Moving beyond globalization hype, Dicken carefully introduces students to the economic, political, and technological processes that are creating global shifts in economic activity and affecting local communities in highly uneven ways. Like the previous editions, the book focuses on the
interrelated actions of transnational corporations (imbedded within intricate business networks) and states (which act as containers, regulators, and competitors) within a volatile technological environment. Several entirely new chapters are included, and all chapters are revised to reflect the latest available data and theoretical debates. Of special utility are detailed case studies of key global industries and more than 200 fully updated figures and tables.
Customer Reviews:
The Best Book on Globalization.......2000-12-13
In light of the other reviews of this book, I am inclined to agree that this is a heady, academic look at globalization. If globalization to you means Mitsubishi cutting down rain forests or Nike exploiting workers, this book may not be for you. It is, as has been pointed out, a textbook and it is one that will challenge your view of globalization. Having come to the book as an opponent of globalization, this book awakened me to the complexity of the problems raised by a rapidly globalizing economy. As a result, I was forced to re-examine my opposition and hone my arguments against globalization. This unbiased, empirical approach makes the book highly recommended for those interested in putting forth the best possible argmuments about the global economy. It is, however, highly academic and not necessarily for most activists.
Attempting to De-Mystify Globalization.......2000-06-02
Global Shift is an ambitious look at the changing world geography through the lens of the economic geographer. The book is divided into four major sections that allow for a detailed exploration of the various arenas that Peter Dicken emphasizes. The text is wrought with details that make it occasionally dense to the non-economist or geographer but one of the most compelling elements of the text is the fact that in an ever-changing global civilization the text is applicable to many different academic disciplines. It provides an important background for understanding the process of globalization in its many manifestations. Ultimately the text comes back time and again to the idea that transnational corporations and political states inside a volatile world of ever-changing technology dominate the globalization processes. Although the text focuses on the idea that the economic world is global and transnational corporations are driving the globalization, Dicken states that the idea of a faceless/placeless corporation is really not an accurate description of what is occurring. I was reminded of Tip O'Neil's famous statement that all politics is local. In much the same way Dicken emphasizes that regardless of the multi-national face of corporations there is an important local element that makes the corporation more accessible than one might think. Another important element of the work is the idea that much of what is occurring is not new. There have been tends in multinationals for years and Dicken does a good job of historicizing these ideas before he discusses the current situation. Throughout the book Dicken emphasizes the three important factors of his argument. First, that there are new centers of production and power around the world. Secondly, that there is an emergence of new global finance dominated by transnational corporations. Finally, that technology, the center of industrialization is changing at a rapid pace that creates more and more flux in the global markets. The book is dense with facts, figures, charts and graphs, but its detail in numbers is immediately useful in looking at the other texts related to this subject. This text is less focused on the cultural ramifications of its observations but to understand fully the cultural context of the globalization process we must first understand the economic processes in play.
Book Description
By drawing on examples from throughout the Third World, Bryant and Bailey explain the development and characteristics of environmental problems that plague parts of Asia, Africa and Latin America and their political and economic bases.

Resilience Thinking: Sustaining Ecosystems and People in a Changing World
ASIN: 1853834726 |
Book Description
* Major new textbook on the geography of sustainable development
* Collaborative effort from one of the UK's leading geography departments
* Ideal for undergraduates in geography, environmental science and social science
Sustainable development is the new mantra, but what does it mean on the ground in how people relate to the physical environment and across landscapes? This book offers fresh insights into sustainable development by looking at it from a range of geographical perspectives. Building on existing theory, it demonstrates geography's unique contribution to the study of human-environment relationships, and examines sustainability at the full range of spatial scales from the global to the local. Both theory and practice are discussed as the book explores sustainable development in urban and rural areas, in both developing and developed countries. The contributors suggest that the future path of sustainability is ours to forge if we make the choice and take action.
