Book Description

This book about China's integration into the world economy proposes a radically different perspective. Most economists view China's large foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows as the result of China's economic success. This study views the same phenomenon as a function of the imperfections in the Chinese economic system. It uses economic theory to explain FDI to a greater extent than previous studies on the same topic. It also presents comparative FDI data of additional countries, making it more comprehensive than previous studies which focused only on China.

5 out of 5 stars It's not just another view ..........2004-02-06

I find Prof Huang's "Selling China" much more than just an academic achievement which it is -- with its disciplined arguments supported by a wealth of well-researched facts.

After 18 years of working on the Greater China scene -- most of it foreign investment related, for me, the greatest value of the book is its main theme -- that the large inflow of FDI over the years reflects weaknesses rather than strengths of the Chinese system. It is not just another point of view in the already overcrowded gallery of China commentary. For me, the well-argued and well-researched "unconventional" view answers some of the key China investment related questions at a very practical level, and should have important implications for government policy making and corporate decision making alike.

5 out of 5 stars the year's best book on china.......2004-02-06

I have seen a number of rave reviews for this book in various economic journals and now I have read the book myself. This is a must read for those who wishes to gain a deep understanding of China's fast-evolving economic and business landscape. I also recommend it to readers who are interested in an unconventional and novel take on foreign direct investment

    Book Description

This book provides the most insightful and comprehensive examination of China's strategy and implementation of its economic reform. When history is written China's remarkable transformation may prove to be the 21st century's most compelling theme. The author, Jianlian Wu, is the principle reason why anyone interested in the world ecomomy or global financial developments must read or be aware of this book. Professor Wu alone possesses an authority regarding these developments because of the influential role he has and will continue to play in China's economic reform. Seldom are such books written with this level of authority. We have a story of which we all must be aware being written by one its most important architects. It is as if we had access to Alexander Hamilton when he helped form America's economic system.

5 out of 5 stars This is a `must know' for every China watcher.......2006-10-09

Jinglian Wu's book on `Understanding and interpreting Chinese Economic Reform' is a must-read for everyone who is involved in and with China. I found it one of the most complete works dealing with economic reform in China. On the other hand, I must warn you this can be very dry reading. Wu in his foreword says that the book was predominantly written for his students and very often it does read like a University textbook.

Wu starts off with recounting the economic systems of the Soviet Union and the former eastern bloc countries and why these centrally planned economies did not work as intended. The author does much the same for China before he sets off explaining the evolvement of China's reform strategy.

Part Two to me is the most interesting bit of the book because Wu deals with the reform process in all important aspects of the economy including the rural, state-owned enterprises, the private (non-state), the banking and securities sectors, fiscal and taxation systems and foreign direct investment. But apart from recounting what has been happening so far, the author also gives some good ideas where reform should go next.

Part Three deals with social issues arising in the course of reform including how best to establish a viable social security system and the role of the Central Government in a market economy. On the latter, Wu is quite clear that a working market economy must be based on the Rule of Law, transparency and a political system best based on democracy. There are also some concluding remarks on the author's findings.

At the end of the book there is a postscript by the translator citing some interesting statistical data on the publication of Chinese books overseas and the other way round. I generally agree with the translator on his findings and his interpretation. The only thing to be done about this imbalance is to have more books published on the subject matter. China is indeed far too important to be misunderstood. Jinglian Wu's book is an excellent step forward towards better understanding China's economy.

      Book Description

Over the last fifteen years the world's largest developing countries have initiated market reforms in their electric power sectors from generation to distribution. This book evaluates the experiences of five of those countries - Brazil, China, India, Mexico and South Africa - as they have shifted from state-dominated systems to schemes allowing for a larger private sector role. As well as having the largest power systems in their regions and among the most rapidly rising consumption of electricity in the world, these countries are the locus of massive financial investment and the effects of their power systems are increasingly felt in world fuel markets. In-depth case studies also reveal important variations in reform efforts. This accessible volume explains the origins of these reform efforts and offers a theory as to why - despite diverse backgrounds - reform efforts in all five countries have stalled in similar ways.

      Book Description

China is far larger and more diverse than many people in the West realize. China's Provinces in Reform studies the impact of economic reform and social and political change within China's provinces, which are considerable social, economic, and political systems in their own right. One of the main aims of this book is to question over-generalizations about China's development in the reform era. This is the first volume of a series and covers Guangxi, Hainan, Liaoning, Shandong, Shanghai, Sichuan and Zhejiang. It is part of an ambitious project, conducted by the Institute for International Studies at the University of Technology, Sydney, that will provide the most thorough and up-to-date analysis of China's provinces yet published.

5 out of 5 stars Digging Beneath the Surface.......2000-07-30

Much of the contemporary research into China's economy is focused broadly on the features, prospects, benefits, or failures of Chinese economic reform since 1978. Subcategories of research touch upon the transition of China's economy from the failed Maoist experiments to its present `Socialist Market Economy' hybrid state, the dynamism of China's `Special Economic Zones,' or the prospects for the collapse of China's financial and industrial sectors. While the bulk of this research represents high scholarly standards, there is a lack of research that looks beneath the systemic features of Chinese economic reforms. China's Provinces in Reform addresses this concern. China's Provinces in Reform analyzes the past, present, and future economic features of selected individual Chinese provinces, with a specific focus on much-ignored provinces, including Guangxi and Zhejiang. The results are impressive, with the assembled researchers doing much to fill in the gaps in recent Chinese economic research. After assessing the future economic prospects of the provinces covered in this book, it becomes quite clear that China's drive toward economic modernization will only become more difficult in the future. The general reader should find this book accessible. Although China's Provinces in Reform was written by specialists for specialists, this volume avoids the temptation of becoming bogged down in overly technical analysis. Editor David Goodman has managed to maintain an even quality standard throughout this volume, avoiding the fate of many volumes containing contributions from multiple scholars. China's Provinces in Reform is recommended for any reader wishing to deepen their understanding of the issues facing China's economic reform drive.

          Book Description

China's bold program of reforms launched in the late 1970s--the move to a market economy and the opening to the outside world--ended the political chaos and economic stagnation of the Cultural Revolution and sparked China's unprecedented economic boom. Yet, while the reforms made possible a rising standard of living for the majority of China's population, they came at the cost of a weakening central government, increasing inequalities, and fragmenting society.

The essays of Barry Naughton, Joseph Fewsmith, Paul H. B. Godwin, Murray Scot Tanner, Lianjiang Li and Kevin J. O'Brien, Tianjian Shi, Martin King Whyte, Thomas P. Bernstein, Dorothy J. Solinger, David S. G. Goodman, Kristen Parris, Merle Goldman, Elizabeth J. Perry, and Richard Baum and Alexei Shevchenko analyze the contradictory impact of China's economic reforms on its political system and social structure. They explore the changing patterns of the relationship between state and society that may have more profound significance for China than all the revolutionary movements that have convulsed it through most of the twentieth century.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Account of China's Development.......2002-02-07

Mao Zedong had shaped China's political system so that it would be responsive to him. Even though the Cultural Revolution actually pitted portions of the populace against his own bureaucracy, he was always in control of this deliberate class struggle and believed the new culture that would emerge from this struggle would still be under his control. Mao's politics during the Cultural Revolution left China in shambles, later referred to "the ten lost years" in Chinese history. By 1976, it faced lagging agricultural production, an inefficient industrial system, high unemployment, sub par standards of living, widespread apathy and cynicism, backwards technology, and a high rate of population increase.

In the late 1970s, China launched a wave of economic reforms to liberalize China's economy and improve the quality of life in China. Such reforms induced an unprecedented wave of economic boom which has extended to today. However, such reforms have also come at the cost of a weakening central government, increasing inequalities, and fragmenting society. In The Paradox of China's Post-Mao Reforms, the essays of various China specialists analyze the impact of China's economic reforms have had on its political system and social structure. The most important point that these specialists jointly raise is that Deng originally conceived his economic reform as a means to enhance the authority of the party-state. However, given the changing dynamics between the state and society, such reforms have ironically undermined the government's authority. Even though the party-state could still repress political dissidents which threatened the party or its leaders, it is increasingly unable to handle other pressing problems such as corruption, the increasing social and geographical disparities, agricultural stagnation, increasing lawlessness, and worsening environmental pollution. The party-state lacks the political institutions and infrastructure to regulate China's accelerating informal federalism, and as current problems grow to be more acute, the party-state will potentially face even greater disorder.

            Book Description

In the past decade, China was able to carry out economic reform without political reform, while the Soviet Union attempted the opposite strategy. How did China succeed at economic market reform without changing communist rule? Susan Shirk shows that Chinese communist political institutions are more flexible and less centralized than their Soviet counterparts were.
Shirk pioneers a rational choice institutional approach to analyze policy-making in a non-democratic authoritarian country and to explain the history of Chinese market reforms from 1979 to the present. Drawing on extensive interviews with high-level Chinese officials, she pieces together detailed histories of economic reform policy decisions and shows how the political logic of Chinese communist institutions shaped those decisions.
Combining theoretical ambition with the flavor of on-the-ground policy-making in Beijing, this book is a major contribution to the study of reform in China and other communist countries.

            Book Description

The tremendous success of China's economic reform, in contrast with the vast difficulties encountered by the former Soviet Union and Eastern European countries in their transition, has attracted worldwide attention. Using a historical, comparative and analytic approach grounded in mainstream economics, the authors develop a consistent and rational framework of state-owned enterprises and individual agents to analyze the internal logic of the traditional Chinese planning system. They also explain why the Chinese economy grew slowly before the market-oriented reform in 1979 but became one of the fastest growing economies afterwards, and why the vigor/chaos cycle became part of China's reform process. The book also addresses the questions: Can China continue its trend of reform and development and become the largest economy in the world in the early twenty-first century? What are the general implications of China's experience of development and reform for other developing and transition economies? In this revised edition, the authors update the data and information in the book and include a new chapter on the impact of China's WTO accession on its reform.

1 out of 5 stars Treat with caution.......2003-08-18

This isn't a good book at all, for the views expressed are either out-dated or can be easily gathered from a brief search through dated newspapers or the internet. Nothing new is offered and the amount of scholarship involved is suspect. Treat it with extreme caution, especially when using it to do research.

5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended Textbook for China's Economic Development.......2001-04-24

"The China Miracle" provides an extensive study of the China's economic development since the establishment of People's Republic of China in 1949. Since the economic reform began in the late 1970s, China's economy grew rapid, with an average annual GNP growth rate of 10% for the past two decades. The China's experience contrasts greatly with the vast difficulties faced by the transition in the form Soviet Union, and Central and Eastern European countries. The success of China's reform thus has attracted worldwide attention.

The authors attempts to answer four questions that are often raised: 1) Why did Chinese economy grow slowly before the reform in 1979 but then grow rapidly afterwards? 2) Why did cyclical fluctuations - the "vigor/chaos" cycles - become part of China's reform process? 3) Can China continue the trend of reform and development and maintain a sustained, rapid growth in the future? 4) What are the general implications of China's experience for other developing and transition economies?

The book remains optimistic about the future success of China's economic reform. Yet, it also points out several problems with the economic reforms that are needed to be dealt with, such as the difficulties in the reform of State-owned enterprises (SOEs), the increasing unevenness in regional development and income distribution, etc. For more discussions on the SOE reform, the book "Stated-owned Enterprise Reform in China" written by the same authors provides a comprehensive study on this issue.

Overall, this book is a very good textbook and reference to students and scholars who are interested in Chinese economy and its future development.
