Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

2 out of 5 stars Not the best.......2007-06-27

This book did have some "interesting" ideas but it wasn't a very big book so your chances of finding a name that you really like are pretty slim. Especially since a lot of the ideas are totally weird names from video games, celebrity baby names, movies, and even a section with "Grandpa" names for little girls...what? Well, if you're looking for a really uncommon or unusual name, go for it, but I recommend also getting a name book with a lot more choices.

2 out of 5 stars Not cool at all.......2007-06-13

I was a little skeptical about finding a "cool" name in a book called "Cool Names", and I was right to be. I know cool is a matter of opinion, but most of the names in this book are simply ridiculous-- is anyone actually going to name their child Salmon or Experience? This slim book appears to be random lists of words that the authors have grouped into categories like "Spiritual Names" or "Artist Names". If you are looking for a unique name I suggest The Baby Name Wizard, which will tell you about the popularity of a name, if it rising or declining in popularity and identify any pop culture references you may overlook (for example, that you are naming your child after a fish!)

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE these books!.......2007-01-18

I adore the books these authors write; they are my soulmates! I have been interested in names ever since I was a child, and their books totally feed my craving. I love their insightful and intelligent advice, I love their humor, and I love lists! I love knowing WHY people (and celebrities) named their child what they did. Knowing trends is very important to me; I would never want my child to be one of 5 of the same name in her class as I was with "Susan". These books have their finger on the pulse, and also give lots of alternative suggestions to popular names. I love their "So Far Out They're In" type categories. This book is a total winner, and very entertaining, unlike those "encyclopedias" of name meanings. I always lend mine to prospective mothers, and keep an extra copy just for that purpose.

2 out of 5 stars Good for writers; not for parents-to-be.......2007-01-14

I'm a writer, so I'm always on the lookout for interesting names I might use for some characters. I have about three people named Scott, five James's (all men), and a good three or four girls with the name Elizabeth. So I picked this up, thinking it might help me. There are some good ideas for character names in here (Narcissa, Dashiell, and Isolde), but I don't think it's a good idea to just smush a name together for a real person (who in their right mind would name their kid Moon?). Plus, it also promotes giving kids crappy names. What really made the star-rating go down for me was their section on grandpa/granddaughter names. It's offensive that they say names like Marshall, Stanley, Wallace, Gary, Randolph, Theodore, and Sherman shouldn't be used on a boy. It's okay to name a girl Marshall, though! After all, a girl obviously is stronger with a male name! "Rolls eyes". Bull. Giving a girl a name like Wallace or Stanley is nothing short of cruel. These are boy names and should stay that way. The same goes for Elliot. And also, a lot of these names aren't new. The -aden trend is already dated; there are so many Brayden/Caden/Jaydens nowadays. I gave it two stars because I found some good ideas in here for CHARACTERS or PETS! But it's only two because it's also suggesting that it's okay to give your kid a crappy name (or should I say, krappeigh, since creative spelling is where it's at nowadays).

2 out of 5 stars What-ever.......2007-01-06

This book doesn't have anything unheard of. It has some lame make you own name ideas. Like instead of Anthony it's Anfrony. Lame.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible for Beginners.......2007-07-18

If you are an advanced Flash or Director user this book might be tolerable, but as a beginner it is HORRIBLE. I have spent 3 hours so far on the first tutorial. Not because the concepts are difficult, but the descriptions in each step are so awful. Most simply, they don't explain the basic principles of how to do things, but then just jump into tutorials telling you to do things like " Set up a new layer and type this into the actions panel". How do I set up a layer, where is the action panel? The book never told me.

Even if you are an advanced user, the tutorials are very poorly set up. For example on one step they tell you to place a bunch of items on the timeline. After placing all 15, in the next step they start referring to different layers that the items are on and how to manipulate them. What they didnt tell you at any point before is that you were supposed to put all the items on specific layers and that the layers have to have specific names that they refer to later. How could this book possibly have gotten past any editors?

Conceptually: Great idea. Could be a very handy book.
In execution: Don't know how it ever got published.

I love playing the games and this book tells the story behind some of the greats! Blockdot has a game site called www.kewlbox.com where you can play all of them!

Maureen Stout isn't the first to attack self-esteem boosters in public schools, and she won't be the last. The question is: Do such creatures actually still exist? Stout, an assistant professor of educational leadership and policy studies at California State University-Northridge, uses many of her graduate students to illustrate the fallout from the self-esteem movement, which hit its heyday in the 1980s and early '90s. She portrays her pupils--tomorrow's teachers--as spoiled brats who can't spell and feel entitled to grades they haven't earned. Her fellow professors are painted as bovine, unoriginal thinkers. It doesn't instill much confidence in the future of our education system--but it's not meant to. Stout attacks the basic tenets of the self-esteem movement, blasting it for lowering expectations, belittling competition, and turning schools into centers for therapy, not learning. She blames "feel-good curriculums" for everything from road rage to the abuse defense used by the parent-killing brothers Lyle and Erik Menendez. Her argument is scattered at times, but it remains passionate throughout. While many self-esteem programs have fizzled under similar harsh criticism, the mindset still pervades our public schools, Stout contends. She lists a number of "red flags" and questions for parents to ask of their schools so they can monitor their own children's education to see if self-esteem exercises are endangering another generation of young minds. The Feel-Good Curriculum will confirm the fears of many and outrage the rest. --Jodi Mailander Farrell

Book Description

A scathing critique of the self-esteem movement in American public education, complete with practical solutions to counter its ill effects

The so-called "self-esteem movement"-a progressive, child-centered, discovery model of schooling-has transformed schools into therapeutic clinics and teachers into counselors, creating a generation of righteous, entitled, underachieving children. An insider's account of the pernicious aspects of this seemingly well-meaning movement, The Feel-Good Curriculum provides devastating evidence that our belief in the power and importance of self-esteem in education is misplaced and without basis.

Avoiding political posturing and political correctness, The Feel-Good Curriculum identifies the four specific effects of self-esteem's stranglehold on our schools-narcissism, emotivism, separatism, and cynicism. It prescribes clear antidotes to them-empathy, rationality and morality, connectedness, and skepticism-and offers a hopeful view of educational philosophy for the next millennium. Professor Stout urges us to replace our coddling, indulgent approach to building self-esteem in children with a sense of authentic self-confidence developed from intellectual, physical, and moral effort and achievement.

5 out of 5 stars Prole Nation.......2007-08-03

The title says it all, but most Americans refuse to believe it. Feelings are what's important, not facts. Self-esteem, that's the objective, not achievement. Kids can't read or write, but they feel really good about being stupid! What a joke!!! The next time the sales clerk can't give you correct change, try to convince yourself it's okay because he has such a high opinion of himself, he'll make a wonderful contribution to society some day. He will. Honestly. But society will have changed a bit by then. Thanks to public schools, more and more Americans are becoming functionally illiterate while at the same time their self-esteem assures them everything's just fine. Their chests may be pumped up with a phony sense of pride, but their heads will be empty. But that's the way somebody wants it. George Orwell had a name for these empty-headed, blissfully ignorant citizens. He called them "proles." Think about it. Maureen's book deals primarily with education and public policy. Other books on these topics include None Dare Call It Education, The Harsh Truth About Public Schools, Legally STUPiD: Why Johnny doesn't have to read, Public Schools Against America: The Hidden Agenda and The Deliberate Dumbing Down of America.

5 out of 5 stars Hits the Nail on the Head! But is Anyone Listening?.......2007-04-20

This book is ABSOLUTELY accurate when it comes to how the self-esteem movement has turned our schools away from academics and the gathering of knowledge. Instead, what we now have in place of safe, well organized places where knowledge can be taught, are amateur therapy clinics.

I got into the teaching game late in life, in my late 30's. I liked kids (still do; most of them anyway) and realized that it was through the efforts of a few good teachers that had taught me that I knew anything academic outside of the blue-collar world in which I was raised. My father had to leave school while in 8th grade in order to go to work, my mother was a (reluctant) high school graduate, and they both , especially my father, constantly stressed the importance of education to me as I grew up.

In school, I started out as a promising student, only to end up a goof; the kind of kid I see a lot of; able, but largely unmotivated. Therefore, I have large gaps in various areas of knowledge, which, to this day, I am trying to fill.

At any rate, when I decided to go back to get my teacher certification in reading, which is not one of the areas I am weak in, I was amazed at some of the utter nonsense being taught by my college professors that I was expected to believe. I already had a BBA in business administration, and had substituted for several years from K-12, but to hear so called "experts" saying that to grade papers using red ink could be harmful to a child's psyche, that female teachers should never wear open toed shoes because of a phenomena called "toe cleavage," that turned on adolescent boys, that tests shouldn't be difficult because every child DESERVES to be successful regardless whether they have done anything to achieve said success or not, etc., was almost too much to absorb! There were times I had to almost pinch myself in order to realize that these things were really being said, and were meant to be taken seriously!

I have spent years trying to teach kids things that, I know from experience, they will be expected to know in order to be considered literate adults; fighting every single day against the "I am entitled to a good grade because I am ME" attitudes the self esteem movement has created, but I am afraid that it is a losing battle, because the self esteem movement has become the ESTABLISHED way of teaching (and indeed THINKING) the past 30-40 years. Teachers like myself are considered "troublemakers" when all we are trying to do is the job of educating our kids so that they can compete in the real world with kids that ARE literate, and that DON'T think that they are ENTITLED to make a living regardless of whether they can do the job or NOT! This book lays it all out and tells it like it really is; and it is NOT a pretty picture.

5 out of 5 stars A Clear and Present Danger........2006-06-28

This book was first published in 2000 (hardcover). And you would think by now that Dr. Stout's inside report on the danger of the self-esteem curriculum would have resulted in drastic improvements in public education in America. Unfortunately, that has not happened. Just before I wrote this review (June '06) I searched the Internet for "self-esteem curriculum" and received 6,320,000 hits. Clearly, the problem remains.

Writing with candor, compassion, wit, and a slight liberal slant - I would disagree with her views on national healthcare, the Second Amendment, and her citing the Matthew Shepard murder as an example of a homophobic hate crime (which we now know was not the case) - Dr. Stout is, on the whole, fair in her presentation. She provides a rare glimpse into the mysterious world of teacher education. And what she reveals is a world of professionals so wrapped up in their own ideas and theories that they are unable (unwilling?) to recognise the devastation being wrought on the nation and its children.

School as therapy centre has produced (and continues to produce) literally thousands of young Americans who are pathologically self-centred, hedonistic, anti-intellectual, unable to cope with the demands of life in the real world, and unwilling to accept the responsibilities that come with living in a democratic society. And as a result that society is at increasing risk of disintegration as these individuals enter adulthood and assume positions in education, business, and government.

My main criticism of Dr. Stout is her failure to recognise that morality and virtue (which she strongly supports) must have a more substantial foundation (i.e., God) than merely the collective agreement of society. After all, the 1960s saw a generation of college students openly rebel against society and its mores and morals in large part because they saw no basis greater than society, no absolute foundation, upon which those mores and morals rested.

In conclusion, the problems Professor Stout identifies have only grown in the six years since her book was published as has the need for parents and other concerned citizens to pay heed and take action before this nation degenerates into anarchy, barbarism, or, in response to those, totalitarianism. This is a book all Americans should read because the problems identified therein are a clear and present danger to the nation, perhaps the greatest danger we are currently facing. We ignore them at our own peril.

Book Description

The Domain Name System (DNS) is the system created to map domain names to IP addresses, and is largely responsible for the widespread popularity of the Internet due to the convenience it offers in calling system resources by an easily recognizable name rather than a cryptic number. Given the critical nature of this technology for ensuring smooth operation of Internet-based resources such as Web and mail servers, it’s imperative that users fully understand key configuration, management and security principles.

Pro DNS and BIND guides readers through the often challenging array of features surrounding DNS with a special focus on the World’s most diffuse DNS implementation, BIND (Berkeley Internet Name Domain). Readers will learn not only about key DNS concepts, but also how to effectively install, configure, deploy and manage BIND in enterprise environments.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book for both novice and expert!.......2006-12-13

This is by far the best book available on DNS. It is very informative and yet the reading style is entertaining (not fluffy though). Overall, it is a joy to read. The author is able to communicate effectively to both the expert and the novice. Look no further than here for a great DNS reference book. Way to go Ron Aitchison!

5 out of 5 stars Definitely the Best!.......2006-07-06

Ron Aitchison's Pro DNS and BIND packs a whopping 550 pages of material which is easy to read for the novice or ongoing DNS administrator, and which is very well written (I greatly enjoyed the author's style). After a short introduction in which I learnt some interesting facts about the provisioning of the root servers, the author implements a first zone describing the necessary concepts such as resource records, queries and zone transfers very clearly, followed by the different types of DNS setups (master, slave, caching, forwarding and stealth servers); these are covered in depth in chapter 7. Chapter five covers IPv6 and its relevance to BIND. Throughout the book, references to other DNS server implementations are given, but the primary focus is of course BIND 9.3.0.

Aitchison leads the reader through detailed installation of BIND on Linux, FreeBSD and even Windows (ISC has an installer for Windows in its portfolio), after which common DNS tasks are discussed (how to delegate a subdomain, how to define SPF records, etc. read it on-line here) as well as a chapter on tools.

The third part of the book is dedicated to securing DNS configurations with topics ranging from simple administrative issues (chroot jails) through securing DNS updates and zone transfers with TSIG and DNSSEC.bis which is covered very extensively in chapter 11.

Chapters 12 and 13 provide extensive commented references on BIND configuration and Zone files. There is of course plenty of on-line reference information on these two topics (including the author's very good DNS for Rocket Scientists) but I like to have reference information on hardcopy (in the event my DNS servers fail, and I can't reach the on-line documentation :-) )

In part 5 the author shortly covers programming with the BIND API and the resolver libraries, and he follows that with an interesting chapter on DNS Messages and Records, good to have if you want to sniff your way through DNS traffic.

The publisher's web site carries a sample chapter as well as the source code to the book which is also available in TAR format on the author's web site together with complementary information and pointers to further resources.

My only complaint about this otherwise excellent book is that on two or three occasions I read a paragraph that I thought I'd just read before; some duplication must have taken place (or I was tired). For the next edition, I'd like to read a chapter on interoperability between BIND and Microsoft Windows DNS servers, specifically regarding DNSSEC.

This book is an absolute must have for anybody who needs to understand DNS in the first place (irrespective of the implementation he or she plans to use), and it is a must have for a systems administrator who is either intending to deploy or has already deployed BIND 9.3. I wish I'd read this book before the first mentioned above.

5 out of 5 stars Online VS. Hardcopy version.......2006-01-31

After reading several of the chapter sections at the authors website, I needed a bit more understanding about how to install and configure Bind 9 onto our Windows box. I wanted to use Bind on old hardware running NT4. I fired off an email to the author and got several pointers that fixed the problems I was having. I realized the pointers he had given me were all covered in his book. After purchasing the book, I not only found out lots of stuff about what all the parameters are but also discovered how to manage bind over the LAN in a secure way. This book is a must have for anyone that wants to use Bind 9 for the first time. It has helped me several times already.

5 out of 5 stars To understand DNS and BIND get this book!.......2005-12-12

The Domain Name System is a critical component of any large network or any computer connected to the Internet. While a home user would not need to setup a DNS server, business networks of any significant size would benefit from an internal server, DNS caching router or other components. This book takes the reader through a very good explanation of DNS and BIND, how it works, how to set it up, how to test it, and how to troubleshoot it. There are many books on DNS and BIND but most either assume a certain level of prior knowledge, provide theory without implementation information, or provide implementation information without any theory so you have no idea how to troubleshoot a problematic implementation. Author Ron Aitchison does an excellent job of discussing both theory and implementation in this book so you end up with a thorough education. He even covers the implementation of a secure DNS server. This book actually takes the reader from a level of complete novice through advanced DNS administrator and does an excellent job of it. Pro DNS and BIND is highly recommended and one of the better books on the subject available.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT Book about DNS and BIND!!.......2005-11-30

while the reference from Paul Albitz/Cricket Liu is sometimes hard to read and long winded, this text from Mr. Aitchinson covers everything and yet stays very clear and simple. I could configure and start a caching only DNS server in less than 30 minutes (well, after omitting the first few introductory chapters ;-). If you want to look up sth., there is also a big reference section. There is also an errata-page at:
http://www.netwidget.net/books/apress/dns/notes.html

I also found this book *much* more useful as the first, because of the fact that it is much more up-to-date!
I can recommend this book to everyone, who
*) wants to install/configure/start/maintain a DNS server
*) wants to get informed about the Domain Name System in general

Up to now, this book is really an insiders' tip!!

5 out of 5 stars Kid-Tested Techniques Really Work!.......2007-09-12

As a bullying prevention educator, I speak to thousands of students each year, and I haven't read a better book about teasing. Some books on the topic are so overly academic that they lose the reader. Ms. Freedman's personable, down-to-earth style immediately draws you in. After reading a chapter, you feel like you've actually spent time with the author, hearing first-hand accounts and real-life success stories that offer hope and inspiration. Ms. Freedman not only shares innovative, kid-tested coping skills, but she explains how, when, and where to use each strategy. Insightful touches like "The Teasing Top Ten" (gleaned directly from kids) as well as "Success Stories" (what has worked straight from the mouth of babes), further help this book stand out from the rest. The thank you letters and drawings I've received from children, parents and educators since I've started including the techniques in my presentations serve as a testament to the value of Easing the Teasing.

5 out of 5 stars Book Review on Easing the Teasing.......2007-09-04

This book consists of great definitions, anecdotes, actual experiences of supervisors, teachers, parents, children and "bullies" who bring discomfort, hardship, cruelty and inappropriate behaviors to those whom the bullies encounter. Easing the Teasing offers the reader a multitude of solutions for adults to follow to lessen the hurt which results from the bullies' behavior and atypical behavior in schools, playgrounds, neighborhoods, homes and community settings. As educators, it is essential for us to be aware of teasing and try our very best to discourage bullies and their nasty behaviors. All of the chapters in this book offer the reader suggestions, real life experiences, strategies in empathy and compassion for us to utilize when dealing with bullies in our jobs and guidance. Easing the Teasing is an up-to-date, current, and powerful book, and should be valued as an extremely beneficial resource in every educator's library.

5 out of 5 stars My child is no longer teased! Thanks for the techniques!.......2002-07-15

This is truly the best book about grade school teasing on the market! I didn't know what to do and my 8-year-old daughter didn't want to go to school anymore. She is a very sweet capable child. However, she has a wandering eye that often looks cross-eyed. She wears very thick glasses and is a bit shy. First she no longer wanted to ride the bus because of 2 kids that continued to call her "buggy bug eyes" and other mean things. So, I began driving her to school because the name calling was breaking my heart. Then after 2 weeks, she began to cry that she no longer wanted to go to lunch or out to recess and I didn't know what to do. The social worker was working with the teacher to discipline the teasers, but the behavior was still going on. The parent library at my school had a copy of "Easing the Teasing" and I read it and worked with my daughter. We practiced responses that she felt she could tell the teasers. She actually enjoyed these role playing rehearsals at home with me. And, after 10 days, she was ready to go on the bus and try them out. Her favorite calm responses were "Really?" or "So?" which really caught the boys off guard. Her reply communicated to the teasers that the put-down really didn't matter or bother her. It's like shrugging your shoulders. Two days later on the playground she responded confidently to the taunts with "Do they look like grasshopper eyes or bumblebee eyes today?" That moment was the end of being called " buggy bug eyes"! Although my child is quite shy, with enough practice and "self talk", she was able to do this and proud of herself that she solved the problem. Thanks Judy for a superb book! I'm sure this will help so many children successfully put an end to the cruel teasing while enabling them to nurture their own self-esteem at the same time.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book!.......2007-09-15

While pregnant with my daughter (now almost one) I looked at every baby name book at Barnes & Noble, and finally bought this one because it was so complete and thorough, and just extremely satisfying to browse and read. I really wanted a baby names book with lots of international names, as well as detailed information about what the names mean, their origins, alternate spellings, etc., and this book has all of that. In fact, I plan to purchase it again for my next pregnancy because someone with a pregnant daughter "borrowed" it -- permanently... -- from me. It's that good! :)

5 out of 5 stars world of baby names.......2006-08-13

I was so happy to see this book listed. We have babies on the way in the family, plus animals and dolls to name. I love the fact that it lets you know the meanings and derivation of the multi-cultural names that we hear everyday.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who needs to name someone, something, or just would like to know what a name really means. I love the book personally and was very happy with the price of it also.

3 out of 5 stars a good baby name book, but not the best.......2006-06-28

I like this book.It is a good collection of names(although not the 30,000 promised)from various areas of the world, from South East Asia to Wales, and from Ireland to the Usa.It certinly will be useful in naming your child if youre after a multi cultural name.
However there are downsides to this book-some of the names are in the wrong section or in 2 or 3 different sections of the book(probably to make up the 30,000 names promised)and with alot of entries(especially those mentioned above)a proper name description and meaning are not given. An example of this is in the American section the name Madeline is described as "French cognate of Magdalene".If it is French, what is it doing in the American Section?Yes it may be popular in America but its still French,so whats it doing in the American section?and also, the exact translation is not given. It is actually Greek and means "tower of Strength"(i learnt this from another book)
Also, depending on where you live in the world some names may not be appropriate for your child(due to cultures, lifestyles etc)
for example a boy or girl from California may not appreciate being called the Hawaiian names of Kapalekanaka or Leolakupaianaha.Just the same as an Irish boy or girl may not like being called the vietnamese names Dieu Hien or Ngocmykhanh.
It doent mean that these are "bad names"(many of them do indeed have beautiful meanings)they certinly are not bad names. Its just that they do not fit in with our cultures and lifestyles etc.
However the book certinly does deliver what is promises-to deliver lots of names from around the world, even if its not the 30,000 that is promised.

5 out of 5 stars Best baby name book.......2005-10-01

This is the best baby name book I have ever seen. We love the Italian section--very accurate, and nice. We also enjoy looking through the others. There are 31 chapters. They include: African names, African-American names, American, Biblical, Chinese, Czech and Slovak, English, French, German, Greek, Hawaiian, Hindu/Indian, Hungarian, Irish, Italian, Japanese, Jewish/Hebrew, Korean, Muslim/Arabic, Mythology, North American Indian, Polish, Polynesian, Portuguese, Rumanian, Russian, Scandinavian, Scottish, Southeast Asian, Spanish, and Welsh.

2 out of 5 stars too many off the wall names.......2005-07-03

if you are looking for an irish name spelled in gaelic, this is your book. if you are hard-up for a romanian name for your little one, this is your book. if you are looking for a "normal," pronouceable name, you'd do better looking elsewhere.

yes, this book has a billion names in it, but well over half are utterly unusable--seriously. either you cannot pronounce them (see above referenced gaelic names) or they are just plain off the charts weird.

we have this book and while i flipped through it a few times, mostly we made fun of the names in it.

Brand Yourself compellingly advocates combining today's hottest business concept with the biggest trends in business demographics. Geared toward anyone switching careers, running a small business, or just striving to advance in a current job, the book--by veteran career coaches and marketing consultants David Andrusia and Rick Haskins--argues persuasively that one must carefully create a personal brand and aggressively market it like soup or mouthwash in order to get ahead in these ultracompetitive times. "Branding is such a powerful tool in selling products that it makes perfect sense that we as individuals should brand ourselves," they write, "thereby creating a strong, positive sense of ourselves and our services that is different and better than what our peers have to offer." They begin with an extensive but clearly articulated "career self-evaluation and brand assessment" to facilitate development of a "Personal Branding Statement" that is specifically shaped by your skills and personality traits in addition to marketplace needs. They then focus on "packaging your brand" with the right name, collateral material, and even office space, and "making yourself known" through properly framed written matter and personal contacts. Concluding chapters offer specific suggestions on attaining promotions and changing careers, as well as using the concept in other special circumstances. --Howard Rothman

4 out of 5 stars Just who are you, anyway? Step one is self-assessment!.......2003-08-06

Branding is critical to success in today's marketplace. Any politician will tell you that success rests with public image and getting people talking about you, your business, or your product. But not everyone is comfortable with self-branding. So before you take a giant leap towards the front covers of "Time" and "Newsweek," your community newspaper - or even the company newsletter - keep in mind that you never, ever get a second chance to make a first impression. The image you present is the one you will have to live with, or live up to! Step ONE in the art of self-promotion is to do an honest self-assessment of who you are, what you have to say - and why anyone would want to listen to your story! Following a careful step-by-step process will help even the most timid become comfortable with the concept of self-promotion. Women, especially, show far too much humility about their talents and skills. If we want people to value our skills, we must first show that we value ourselves -- by making sure our accomplishments are visible to targeted audiences. If we want people to hire us, promote us, buy from us or invest in our companies, they have to know who we are, what we have accomplished and why they should do business with us! Branding or self-promotion isn't a four-letter word. It is a valuable business tool that career women must add to their strategies for success. (from Marion E. Gold, award-winning author of "The Personal Publicity Planner: A Guide to Marketing YOU")

4 out of 5 stars A Worthwhile Perspective Presented Well.......2001-06-19

A good friend recommended this book to assist me in positioning my company and services in a new market. The authors make an excellent case for applying the techniques of successful product branding to yourself in order to stand out within a competitive field.

The authors present their material in a logical, well-rounded manner. First, they explain branding and give many good examples of successful campaigns. Then, they introduce a series of assessment tests to help you determine your strengths and passions and how these fit in with your personal brand. Finally, they provide examples of marketing yourself within this brand identity, again providing plentiful examples and case studies.

In all, Andrusia and Haskins present useful concepts in an thoroughly readable and accessible book.

This book reminded me of all the good stuff I learned about product management as an undergrad business major and taught me step-by-step how to apply brand marketing to myself in the job marketplace. All the friends to whom I have recommended this book have thanked me heartily. The advice in this readable, friendly volume greatly facilitated my recent transition to a new career. All working people should read it, particularly those who dislike self-promotion.

5 out of 5 stars Out of the box thinkers read this !.......2000-02-04

I sat down one Sun afternoon and read the entire book in one setting. It is truly a powerful secret weapon in today's competitive marketplace. The writing was superb, and very witty. I really enjoyed the way that Mr. Haskins didn't make the reader feel inadequate, rather provided empowerment. It was like having a personal coach help you to reinvent yourself and discover abilities and talents that you may have other wise overlooked. I highly recommend it for persons who are in business, or want to shine in a presentation where branding is essential. I eagerly await the next book.

    Book Description

"Paul Temporal shows how the fundamental principles of brand building are transferable to the Asian environment. A diverse collection of Asian caselets should convince us that the 21st century will see the emergence of more Asian regional and global megabrands." Professor John A Quelch Dean London Business School "Branding in Asia addresses an unusual situation in Asia - how is it that a region which has such high brand appreciation, produces few international brands of its own? The author's analysis of actual case studies, ranging from powerful global brands to local companies, illustrates his points clearly. This, coupled with a sensitive understanding of the cultural differences in the region makes it an excellent reference for everyone working with brands." Felix Herrnberger President BMW Asia Pte Ltd "Paul Temporal succinctly dissects the often mystical qualities that make up a successful brand. Too often Western insights, models and case studies are applied arbitrarily across the globe, it is so refreshing to see branding tackled from a purely Asian perspective. An invaluable reference book and eminently readable, the step-by-step style and volume of relevant cases and examples makes this a must have for any manager in Asia looking to embark on creating his own regional or global brand." 5 out of 5 stars FIRST BOOK TO SPECIFICALLY ADDRESS BRANDING IN ASIA.......2000-07-31

One of the ways to achieve sustainable growth in any market is a recognisable brand name. While many Western companies have successfully developed international brands, Asian companies have been slow to follow suit. How is it that Asia, a region that has such high brand appreciation, produces so few international brands of its own?

In this groundbreaking book, Asia's leading brand architect addresses this unusual situation, explains the fundamentals of branding and shows how companies can use them to achieve outstanding performance. Containing over 20 case studies of leading Asian and Western brands, this book is packed with illustrative examples, advice and exercises.

Branding in Asia is an invaluable book that is a must for anyone responsible for business growth in the 21st century.

Dr Paul Temporal is Asia's leading expert on brand creation, development and management, having lived in the region for over 14 years. He has worked with leading companies and governments, and is well known his results-oriented and hands-on approach. He is the author of Corporate Charisma.

5 out of 5 stars exceeded my expectations wonderfully.......2000-06-08

My expectations were mainly about redressing the balance on geographical origins of brand case studies. Our literature suffers from being far too US centric. This imbalance is unfortunate for several reasons including: - living in the US for the last 2 years has taught me how atypical the US consumer is of any other I have met in 25 countries that I have worked - from the oldest brand models (which assumed brands were advertising led) to the newest ebrand models, there's huge share of voice reflecting the culture of corporate America and the case theories of its business schools. These powerful systems shouldn't be unquestioningly exported as being de facto paradigms for local organisational excellence or social value.

My expectations were exceeded because this book - unlike most on the brand which start with chapters on advertising and marketing communications - opens up from the very beginning on the leadership importance of branding. Here we are on pages 1-2: "Strong brands endure many challenges. This is becoming increasingly relevant in an era of unprecedented change, upheaval and uncertainty. This change is strategic, unlike the incremental change of more predictable times, and therefore requires a strategic response. Brand building is exactly such a response. If successful, it can be the strongest weapon in a company's armory and the best guarantee of corporate survival. The challenge that lies ahead is that of change management.

And by page 4, we're invited to join in a cataloguing of worldwide changes to marketing: -the breakdown of market boundaries -globalization and the development of global brands -increasing market fragmentation -product diversity and shorter life cycles -greater customer sophistication -digital business -economic instability and market volatility

So this book flies, and yet at the same time when you read it you will continually pick up useful advice whether your brain is looking for practical or academic stimulation. For example, the book closes with an appendix of very worthwhile brand exercises, and it resonates with case studies, 24 in all. Each case study ends with a summary of that brand's strengths.

This book will be good for you whether this is the first one you read on branding, or as in my case the twenty first, including two of my own. For example, I learnt a lot from Temporal's consistently strong advice on brand values and the way they shape corporate personality on its outside and inside.

4 out of 5 stars For Asian Companies with global aspirations........2000-05-05

Few Asian companies have been successful in developing international brands. It is now a sophisticated process that puts together and sustains a complex mixture of local and international attributes and values , something that is tangible. Its interesting how Temporal have chosen the different products ( over 20 )from leading Asian and Western brands to show good examples of how companies have used the fundamentals of branding to achieve global success. He has provided illustrative examples, techniques , exercises and invaluable advice for any company in Asia regardless of size that strives for more than being just another local household name.

5 out of 5 stars a case study of international brands in asia.......2000-04-30
