Book Description
Generation to Generation presents one of the first comprehensive overviews of family business as a specific organizational form. Focusing on the inevitable maturing of families and their firms over time, the authors reveal the dynamics and challenges family businesses face as they move through their life cycles. The book asks questions, such as: What is the difference between an entrepreneurial start-up and a family business, and how does one become the other? How does the meaning of the business to the family change as adults and children age? How do families move through generational changes in leadership, from anticipation to transfer, and then separation and retirement? This book is divided into three sections that present a multidimensional model of a family business. The authors use the model to explore the various stages in the family business life span and extract generalizable lessons about how family businesses should be organized.
Customer Reviews:
Great framework for family business.......2007-10-01
This book provides a great framework on family business. Started my career in a family business, I have my share of understanding on family business. Typically, there some mixed up on personal emotion and professionalism. By using the framework discussed in the book helps folks in family business to focus more on business, less on personal emotion.
A 'must-read' for the whole family !!.......2003-11-23
"Generation to Generation", published by Harvard Business School Press, is an attempt to model how family businesses work in essence. The authors' research include interesting vignettes and 'lessons-learned' from a variety of families; how they achieved their goals, how they resolved conflicts between family members etc. Since the topic of family business in academics is fairly new, this book can be considered as one of the best in its field.
Important topics (such as succession, development stages and inter & intragenerational issues) are covered in detail to enlighten the reader. Contrasting viewpoints are also included to make the reader think for his or herself.
In general, the book is fairly easy to read since it explains the modeling theory with examples from numerous enterprises.
I strongly recommend it all who are destined to work in the complex system called family business.
Packed with Knowledge!.......2002-04-02
Most businesses in the world today are owned by families, but only a small percentage of these companies will survive and grow into major corporations. The unique challenges posed by family ownership can undermine even the best-performing small business, as issues of control and succession permeate the generations. In Generation to Generation, the authors apply the simple premise that managing a family-owned business to a large extent means managing the family itself. To that end, they provide a rich compendium of research and strategic suggestions for those charged with making a family business work, including the consultants who guide them. We from getAbstract highly recommend this book for these applicable measures and methods, which will help the performance of both business and family.
A perfect blend of theory and practice!.......1999-09-17
The authors effectively present a theoretical, as well as practical model of family business dynamics, incorporating the complexities of development over time. This book is a must-read to gain a deep understanding of families in business from the key perspectives of familiy, business, and ownership. Their use of case examples effectively illustrate the practical application and relevance of theory. To sum it up, it's steak AND sizzle!
An excellent book for anyone interested in family businesses.......1999-08-14
I think this is one of the best books available on family businesses! I found it insightful and informative. I think anyone interested in the subject should read this book. I strongly disagree with the review that describes this book as "too theoretical." I found it immensly practical.

Customer Reviews:
Disappointing Book.......2007-09-03
This book is heavy on motivation and light on actual how-to. If you need cheerleading about how necessary passion for retailing and customer service is to be successful, then this book is for you. If you are looking for specific information and resources on how to start and run a successful specialty store, then this is not for you.
Great Guide.......2007-05-19
This was an excellent read. It brought so many things to my attention that I never really thought about. It mentions websites and names of things that I will actually use. I am just getting my ideas together to start a boutique, and this was perfect for me.
Excellent !.......2007-05-12
This book was immensely helpful to me in my quest to open a small specialty business. I truly can't think of a question the author doesn't address. I highly recommend it.
Specialty Shop Retailing.......2007-03-19
Starting a one-woman video business, not a shop, but this
book gave some straightforward, honest advice and tips.
Easy reading yet intelligent. Great for future reference as
my business expands.
could be more concise.......2006-09-17
Was rather of a long story and sometimes hard to read as it doesn't get to the point quick. But I did get one good idea from it so there was some value in it for me.
Customer Reviews:
The only book you'll ever need!.......2007-10-18
As an M.B.A with a Marketing specialization, and having read tons of books on Selling and Marketing, I would recommend this book hands down for any one wanting to learn the basics, as well as to brush up their skills and become adept at selling their product or service. I am starting out on my own and this one book has proved very handy. The Edwards truly understand the nuances and difficulties of selling, especially for those on their own and and have analyzed some of the problems that typically inhibit people from succeeding even with the right plan.
If you work from home, definitely get the Working from Home book by the same authors, and read them both. I have recommended this book to many friends.
Particular points of interest for me was the repeated emphasis to specialize, to choose a niche, and avoid the trap of being a Jack of all trades.......too many options make most of us decide we could do several different things - b'cos we are good at many things or b'cos we want more options for revenue. The authors spell out how this would be very much like shooting ourselves in the foot, and help you shape your strategy and reason things out for yourself.
To summarize, this books not only helps you get business, it also helps you choose your strategies, from a clever business name to finding a niche. Get this book now!
Rubbish.......2007-10-12
Lots of talk about impractical business ideas and promotion methods. Hundreds of pages of empty talk.
Marketing essentials for your small business........2007-09-13
Another great book for a small business looking to establish themselves and learn the essentials of marketing. Getting Business to Come to You focuses your attention on the most effective, low-cost methods of marketing and also gives very useful technical details on the process of creating your own marketing materials.
The four most effective, low-cost marketing methods are
1. Word of mouth. To have a business thrive and grow with only word of mouth marketing should be the goal of every entrepreneur. Not that you can't give it a kick with some other methods when you want, but what sweet bliss it is to have your customers and new ones beating a path to your door with no effort on your part except your great reputation and service. The key is to get yourself into the mind of the people that matter...your customers. Focus your efforts on those people that will buy from you and get them to give you referrals. Everything else you do is in order to reach this goal.
2. Public relations. PR is your ticket to being established as a leader in your industry. Create a publicity kit and get the media's attention. Use your publicity to get others to recognize your name and know that you are the expert in your field.
3. Direct marketing. Use it to control how often your business enters into the mind of your customer. A monthly newsletter or a quarterly sale or discount, that they are alerted to via direct mail or email, will keep you in their minds and keep them telling their friends about you.
4. Inventive advertising. New customers will be attracted to your business if you are effective at advertising. Being inventive is the key. Your copy has to stand out from the rest and you have to be creative. Experiment with different media such as bulletin boards, radio and TV shows, yellow pages, trade directories, etc.
This book has helpful lists of when a particular marketing technique is right for your business and when you're just wasting money. It helps you tailor your marketing campaign to your needs. I especially enjoyed the technical details on such topics as building a publicity kit and writing and designing advertising copy that sells. Other topics were detailed as well, but these stood out as the most important for my business at this time. Read the book and see which ones stand out for you!
While reading Getting Business to Come to You I often found myself putting the book down to implement some of the things I had learned before moving on.

A wealth of information .......2007-08-07
This has got to be one of the best marketing books out there for small businesses. The authors really have a good understanding of what it's like to be starting out, and the mistakes that can be made -- and how to do it RIGHT instead!
My only complaint is it is a bit wordy at times. One good example serves the purpose, and we are given 5. So skim on once you get the point. There is a ton of meat here. Great great stuff. Well worth the money spent.
Getting Business to Come to You.......2007-02-10
This book is the "I want it all" book for the sole proprietor in the startup phase! Step by step instructions, inspirational, and informative.
Worth it's weight in gold!!
Book Description
Thinking Like An Entrepreneur is a yes-you-too-can-achieve-your-dream-power-of-positive-thinking self-help motivational book coupled with some very serious business analysis. While some people dream of coming up with a hot idea and taking the next great Internet company public, this book focuses on building a real business with real profits. Such businesses can make the founder worth millions of dollars in only a few short years without the company ever becoming public. This book is written for entrepreneurs who want to make their company profitable ASAP.
But to build such a business demands an understanding of simple financial and business decision making. Thinking Like An Entrepreneur teaches you to understand the fundamentals that underlie intelligent decision making for your small company.
The book covers many important topics (cash flow, profit margins, and the time value of money, etc.) and will help get a new entrepreneur started. Whether or not you wish to grow your company to a substantial size, this book will help you succeed in business by teaching you to think more like successful entrepreneurs--to make fundamentally sound decisions. Some of the book's highlights:
If you choose not to grow your business, but just to do "your own thing," Chapter 23 covers becoming a consultant in some depth. This is a viable avenue for computer programmers, graphic artists, videographers, and, of course, web page designers today. The chapter is a short primer for deciding if you want to become a consultant and is an introduction to some of the basic issues consultants face. The new area of online consulting is briefly discussed.
If you choose not to start from scratch, but rather, buy an existing business, Chapter 26 goes into detail into buying a business. You will learn how to value a smaller company, including valuing intellectual capital. A rather lengthy chapter you might choose to skip unless you really are going to seek a business to buy.
Chapter 17 shows you why it is important to incorporate your company and discusses the option of creating an S-corporation. Issues of taxation and liability are discussed. The chapter helps you understand how to minimize your overall tax bite and get the best liability protection possible.
Chapter 9 discusses the role of personality type in building a company. It is important that you start a business that is suited to who you are as a person. A great market opportunity is not a great personal opportunity if you won't enjoy the business. This chapter is written to help you find a business suited to you.
Chapter 4 and 5 go into detail explaining how thriving businesses bootstrap themselves to financial success. You are introduced to the concept of compounding intervals and rates of return (which are further developed on Chapter 16 which is dedicated to the nature of compounding money within a business). Proprietary products are discussed. This tread of thought is continued in Chapter 12 which deals with cash flow and how cash flow issues can affect your company's growth rate. A hypothetical game company making "Lifers" is considered. These chapters alone probably make the book worth reading.
Chapter 7 discusses the author's personal views on how the Internet is changing business today and what the Internet means for Microsoft and other established companies. An easy-to-read chapter, but with no hands-on advice on how to create your site.
Chapter 13 is a comparison of the fields of computer programming and computer-based training (CBT). The goal is to get the reader to see where value is created within the type of business he or she will start.
Chapter 15 discusses the role of luck in business and explains why Bill Gates is the richest man alive today. You will learn how to play the "game" of business appropriately allowing for the role of luck.
The book is written in an irreverent fashion, and might be subtitled, "Entrepreneurship Lessons From The Movies" as the author refers to several films to make his points. Although light-hearted in fashion, the book gets a bit mathematical in a few chapters. But those chapters are well worth the read to anyone serious about building a company.
Customer Reviews:
Some useful info and an easy read.......2005-08-25
A sense of humor and sarcasm guaranteed to make you cringe, a very limited set of cases (mainly IT), examples and industry references and too many mentions of Bill Gates are the bad points of this book, but all in all I found it useful. A sort of business and entrepreneurship for dummies guide. Highly recommended starting point for those want to become business people but know that their knowledge of business basics is lacking. Perhaps not so useful for people not in this position. Sections on compounding and cashflow stick as two of the more useful.
Very good for a newbie entrepreneur.......2005-07-16
Mr Hupalo's book is a very informative read for a newbie business person or wannabe entrepreneur. He explains some of the great things about a business and why it's important to choose the correct, high margin business. The book is well written and informative but could have been edited a bit better to make the read clearer.
The chapter on corporations I don't agree with. Mr Hupalo feels all entrepreneurs should establish a corporation rather than a sole proprietorship. This is not the way June Walker feels in her excellent book: "Self Employed Tax Solutions". This book lists the advantages for an entrepreneur for using a sole proprietorship such as:
* You and your business are one and the same.
* A sole proprietor and his business use the same tax year.
* It's income or loss is your income or loss.
* It's debts and assets are your debts and assets.
* Assets, originally for personal use, can immmediately be used in your business without paperwork and without negative tax consequences, and there can be positive tax consequences without any cash outlay.
* It's the easiest, quickest, and cheapest business structure to set up and maintain with regard to recordkeeping, accounting, legal procedures, and fees.
* It does not require a separate tax return (a Corporation does).
* A sole proprietorship allows for a simple, direct deduction of home office expenses.
* A SP can immmediately reduce your other taxable income.
* A SP allows for the most advantageous tax remedy when husband and wife work in the same business.
Mr Hupalo has written a good book about business which any new entrepreneur should read but just skip the chapter which advises incorporation immediatly. For most single person businesses a Sole Proprietorship works best. After you have an employee or two, then you should think about incorporating.
Smart Choices for Entrepreneurs -- Great Stallbusting Ideas!.......2004-09-25
The title of this book is a little misleading. It is not helping you learn how to think like an entrepreneur. In fact, the book teaches you how to more accurately make assessments that entrepreneurs have to make. If you do that, your entrepreneurial success should be higher.
I like books about avoiding thought patterns that delay or derail progress, and thoroughly enjoyed this one. In many ways, the book parallels the outstanding book about personal decision-making, Smart Choices, that I strongly recommend you read as well.
Why, then, did I rate the book at four stars rather than five? Basically, the book didn't quite get the editing it deserved. There are some minor misspellings of the sort that should have been caught. More seriously, the book indulges in unnecessary vulgar language in a few places. If those things don't bother you, see this as a five star book. It certainly is in every other way.
Some of the subjects include how to overcome risk aversion, how to lay off risk, picking the type of business to go into, establishing a business model that has the best chance of success, and how to have the business match your personality and preferences. These are subjects I feel are important for any entrepreneur, and are often not covered by business books. I was especially impressed by the focus on ethics and high moral tone of the advice.
This book will have value both for people who are thinking about becoming entrepreneurs and those who are already running small businesses. Since the book often focuses on computer consulting and computer-based training, those who are in those fields will find the book to be especially valuable.
As a test of the value of the book's content, I applied the concepts to my own management consulting firm and found that the analyses were accurate and useful. So you can add management consulting as another business type for which this book is good.
One of the things I liked about the book is that it realistically encourages people to think about entrepreneurship. Even if you decide that having your own business is not for you, this book will give you a better basis for feeling confident about that decision.
If you do decide you want to buy or start a business, I suggest you share this book with your spouse and a person who already has a business in the same area. Then discuss your ideas with each of them in terms of the concepts in the book. Their feedback will help you form a more realistic view of your ideas.
A must read for existing and future biz owners.......2002-10-15
Finally a book written on entrepreneurship that has so much to offer! A guide for fledgling IT entrepreneurs as well as a resource for those faced with the myriad problems of the modern business environment. It is also an introduction to computer consulting and building a multimedia company. Readable, concise, precise, and pragmatic. The in-depth coverage and sound counsel make this a book that should be in every business person's library. I've read my copy twice. It's twenty-seven chapters of very good, easy-to-read inspirational reading. A must read for anyone thinking about starting or expanding their existing business. Highly recommended!
Entrepreneur Highly Informative.......2002-08-12
This book's got a lot of good stuff in it--those critical factors that help contribute to making good business decisions. I've already seen some improvement in business growth. In fact, the usefulness of Entrepreneur's information is a lot like Guerilla PR: Wired: both have tons of really useful info to entrepreneurs on how to build their business.

wonerful book.......2004-11-11
I am working from home with my third business, its very sucessful by my standards, and I have its growth firmly under control.I picked up a copy of this at the library, wish I had read it two businesses ago.
If you have a small business, or want to start one, please read this first, its the best small business book you can read. Its honest, no hype or promo work, I now have a copy and use it it to keep on track wit hsome of my details.
Many of the lessons in the book I learned the hard way over the last ten years, by reading this you can avoid a lot of Pain!
Like A Beacon In the Dark.......2003-09-03
People who look to this book for a how-to manual on financing, marketing, incorporating, etc. will be disappointed. And that's OK, because it offers something much more precious - peace of mind. That's not to say there isn't general advice about some of these issues and even some real targeted suggestions to solve certain problems, but the focus is more on the mindset of being your own boss, at start-up and beyond. A step-by-step, "put Tab A in Slot B" book almost seems like putting the cart before the horse after reading this. If the mind isn't ready or is struggling, everything that comes after will be a struggle too despite the best instruction manual.
I am in the process of opening my own business after being "downsized" for the last time. Some days have been up and some days have been down. Some days I thought I should throw in the towel and go live in a hut somewhere far, far away. This book has shown me that all of this is normal and has shown me how to use the up moments and push past the down ones to get what I want. It's amazing the way the authors almost seem to step inside your head. They are supportive, clear and offer real, usable advice to keep on track mentally, exult in your victories and deal with the difficulties as they arise. The format is conversational, friendly, uplifting and confidence-building.
This book will be part of my "business bible" collection - those books I will refer to again and again as I grow my business.
Are we reviewing the same book?.......2003-04-21
I am intending to start my own little business but have no idea how to, and bought this book. to my dissappointment, this book is so general and not touching the point. it tells me how great it is to start your own business...etc which i knew already, and left me unchanged about how to start my business and wondering where the hell the secrets are?!!
If I want to know how to build a house, I don't need to know how great it is having my own house.. instead, I need to know that first i need to find the perfect land and other important steps. The book can save much paper in cutting off all the repetition of unnecessary sentences.
This book made me money.......2002-12-17
My daughter bought this book for me and it made me tenfold over the price of the book within one week by using one of the tips. The Edwards' format is easy to read and they go through all the possible setbacks of self-employment and how to avoid them. I've been a freelance writer for two years, but anyone - whether starting to work on their own or in the business for 10 years - can learn from this book. It's well worth the price.
WONDERFUL!.......2000-02-26
I am 21 years old, and would love to be a part time real estate investor and be an independent personal trainer! I am in college, and have had low paying minimum wage jobs(working for someone else) and my LONG TERM goal is to be my own boss. Why spend your whole life working under 1 person's clock, with only one set paycheck(a lousy one at that) when you are capable of so much more? To me having your paycheck dependent upon only one person is much riskier than getting the same amount if not more from lots of other people. All of the males in my father's side of the family worked for themselves. Here is what my great-great grandfather once told my own father, "It is best to get $1 from 100 people, then to get $100 from only one person".

Good Basic Rules for the Beginner.......2007-03-11
This is a quite complete guide to what it takes to start and operate a successful business in the United States. It's broken down into three major parts that cover the three big aspects of being in business.
Part One is on the general concepts of being in business, being your own boss, the money you will need, other kinds of businesses like franchises. You need to be very honest with youself here. There are some people who just are not suited for self employment. Then there the rest of who are just not suited to work for someone else.
Part Two has two areas I recommend you read and then don't exactly do what he says.
First, he starts off with how to write a business plan. I realize that people say they don't need one, but I recommend you write one anyway. It forces you to think about aspects of your business that you might otherwise ignore, and it's better to think of them before they become problems. On the other hand, I wouldn't follow his advice on how to write the plan. Go buy one of the business plan writing software packages. They are cheap ($30 or so on eBay) will guide you through the writing process and have a bunch of pre-written plans to use as examples. I've used a couple of different packages, they were both about the same, get the one that looks best to you.
Also in Part Two is a discussion on accounting. Read what he says, but then go buy a small computer accounting system. Setting up your own system is a pain, and if you start with a computer based system, you'll not have to convert later. Indeed, the first entries you make in the system can be the purchase of the software packages, and writing off of your computer system.
Part Three kind of goes back to the general concepts of part one. Chapters include comments on things like cash, banks, credit cards, etc.
All in all, a good introductory book.

Fantastic Book........2005-03-16
Do you feel out of place at work? Read this book-your not alone.
An inspirational book for all.......1999-02-07
I purchased Lisa Kivirist's book in the " Stage 2: Toes on the Line" stage of my life. I have a very good job in " Corporate America" doing what I like, but I absolutely hate it. I am not new to the industry in which I work, but I have reached a level at which I must weed through, for lack of better word, tons of bull in a never-ending combination of house-of-cards and shell-game trying to accommodate several bosses at different levels with conflicting ideas, huge egos and , in my opinion, often unethical business practices. The final straw was a salary review in which I scored well, but was near the top of my range, so could only earn an additional $165. per year; and a promotion which received no monetary increase because I already make more than the other guys in my department and it wouldn't be fair to them. I was so angry, I quit on the spot, but was encouraged to think about it over the weekend and talk about it on Monday. Needless to say, my mind was made up, but I reconsidered and have decided to stay to the end of the calendar year (gives me time to formulate a great plan and execute it, allowing me to position myself more favorably financially).I spent the first 25 years of my career as a manager with little supervision and did very well. I know that I will be very good at working for myself. I am not 30 something, I am a 51 year old woman with a daughter in college, but I found Miss Kivirist's book to be truly inspirational and uplifting. She has helped me to take that much needed step toward financial freedom and "Life Outside the Corporate Track". Thank you, Lisa, for writing a very supportive book.
A Great Motivational Book for the Corporate-weary Soul.......1999-02-02
Although I had already made the decision to leave my corporate job before reading this book, I found it to be a great source of motivation for what lies ahead of me as I take a more personal stake in my career and life. While the book won't go much in-depth about starting your own business (other start-up books are better for that), and is a very quick read, the book lays a good foundation for building up the entrepreneurial psyche. Tired of the corporate world? Have no idea how to get the courage to resign? Don't know the first thing about setting off on your own? Read this book first!
How to get out of your office and into your own business........1999-01-19
This is a book about the nuts and bolts of how to "Kiss Off Corporate America" and be your own boss. Ms. Kivirist writes from a first-person point of view and incorporates the stories of others as she encourages you to follow your dreams and work for yourself. If you are curious as to how it is done or what to do in steps, this is your book. She covers the tax issues, the financial issues but most importantly, the personal issues of dealing with the people in your life. Sometimes, those we love most can hold us back more than our own reservations. Kiss Off Corporate America is more than a business book, it is a change-your-life book.

an essential resource for anyone unhappily stuck at a job or company, this book supports the realization that many young people are coming to: that getting the "right" job, leading a safe and secure life, and gathering heaps of material goods isn't the answer for everyone. if you seek a job that actually makes you happy and that you feel good about--not just a job that pays the bills--you will find the tips in this book useful.
the difference between "kiss off" and other career books is that the author discusses the emotional nature--and the roadblocks--of following your dreams. this book isn't about finding another job, it's about achieving an alternative lifestyle--where you control your time and seek to maintain a balance between work activities, relationships, and interests. since this lifestyle flies in the face of how our parents were raised, it often results in parents, friends, and co-workers saying, "you left your high-paying job with great benefits for WHAT?" the author offers advice about dealing with these as well as other pressures you will face when you kiss off.
also provided is a framework for getting in touch with where you are now, where you want to go, and how to get there. i found the idea of a personal non-business business plan excellent for gathering my thoughts in a constructive and tangible way. as well, the idea of an "experiential sabbatical"--a period during which you try out a variety of potential ideas before committing to a final decision--is a creative way for people to transition out of the cubicle.
stories of folks who have actually "kissed off," how they did it, and how they have fared, are sprinkled throughout the book. kivirist also uses humor and sniglet-like terms to describe the life of a "cookie cutter corporate clone," and coins appropro phrases that describe the plight of many corporate genx'ers.
Book Description
A life-changing program to teach women and men the feminine way to start a business, develop self-confidence, self-love, and gain a new outlook on life.
Lynne Franks is one of the best-known public relations consultants in the world. In the years since she first began working from her own kitchen table, she has advised and guided women entrepreneurs from diverse cultural backgrounds across the globe.
In The SEED Handbook (Sustainable Enterprise and Empowerment Dynamics), Franks pulls together a twelve-stage program that is both an economic and personal growth tool. It contains practical exercises to give readers the confidence to trust their abilities, passions, and values to enable themselves to create something organic that grows naturally from who they are as people. Franks shows how to keep the dream alive with marketing, business planning, marketing launches, and case histories.
The women and men who Franks uses as examples are creating consciously ethical and responsible businesses based on integrity and love. Like them, many of us desire to start a sustainable enterprise but are too fearful. The SEED Handbook helps break the social conditioning and lack of confidence, find support, mentors, and plant the seeds that can create the garden we want to have in our lives.
With Franks's handbook, readers will not only become members of a thriving SEED community, but also happily take responsibility for their lives.

A great inner workbook to get the prosperity consciousness going. Very affirmative in tone and lots of anecdotes. A list of other resources is included to continue learning about blending soul with capitalism. Best to use the Suze Orman books in conjunction with one such as this. Franks offers the inner wealth techniques, Orman outlines actually action strategies to bring money and abundance into physical existence.

Although I believe Lynne Franks has good insight for people who want to start their own business, I found it annoying the way that she would name drop and take credit for the success of others. If you are looking for an uplifting book that will help you take the next step toward running your own business, I would recommend, "Building a Business the Buddhist Way : A Practitioner's Guidebook" by Geri Larkin. This book provides the inspiration to take the next step and more practical advise on how to write a business plan and get started.

Book Description
Are you one of the many women out there who needs a brand-new model for your business career? Are you looking for entrepreneurial alternatives to the world of big business, but aren’t sure where to start? A transition into small business is a natural progression for countless women who have invested the first phase of their careers in large companies. Many mid-career women dream of starting their own businesses, but until now there hasn’t been a book that gives them the sense of multiple choice that helps them find the right entrepreneurial fit—options that go beyond starting a venture to include buying an independent business or a franchise, joining or consulting for small businesses, or working with partners.
There’s a confusing array of how-to books out there with general advice about starting a business, conducting a job search, or balancing work and family. But what entrepreneurial women really need are the strategic tools for choosing and growing a business that will not only make them money, but make them happy as well. Women need direct, gender-specific advice about succeeding financially in their businesses; they also crave the feeling that their work matters, and they want flexibility and control over their professional lives in order to achieve a healthy work-life balance. This book offers them the womenfriendly business advice they need and numerous true-life role models to identify with and emulate.
Author Ginny Wilmerding opens women’s eyes to the advantages of buying, joining, or consulting for existing small businesses, fully explaining the alternatives to starting from scratch. If you lack an original business idea, this book will give you the confidence you need to get excited about pursuing a business idea other than your own. But if you do want to start a company from the ground up, there’s plenty of food for thought for you here, too. Wilmerding not only shares her own stories and outside experts’ advice but also includes insightful vignettes from women who have found their niches and are succeeding financially.
If you’re wondering how to finance your small business, Wilmerding steers you toward success in obtaining SBA loans and other financing. Finally, if you’re considering partnering with others to share the risk and the fun, she prepares you for partnership success, and explains the importance of good advisers and mentors.
The goal of this book is to get you started on the path to a successful career in the small business world, a world that needs experienced, smart, versatile women like you to join its ranks. Smart Women and Small Business is the ultimate professional guide for mid-career, business-minded women who want to achieve the same independence and success as their entrepreneurial male peers—but in their own way.

Women have more opportunities than ever before: including small-businesses that demand almost no start -up cash or overhead .......2007-07-08
If you're looking for large-scale business opportunities, this book will take you down that road, helping you make the leap from a corporate career to a small enterprise. However, I quickly realized that I not only wanted to leave the traditional workplace, I wanted more time with my family, and I didn't want to take any risks, or invest a lot of time and money into starting something on a grand-scale--so I had to find other options. I took advantage of the Information Age, entering into the biggest book bazaar in the world, selling used books on Amazon. Although, I hadn't planned for it, I ended up making more money, part- time, than I dreamed of--so the grand-scale came, serendipitously. This exemplifies how many opportunities there are for women today, who want to start a business of their own. Wilmerding's book is a great place to get started. But, if you want something less demanding (no start up cash, overhead, or long hours), that still brings in the extra-money you need, don't stop there. In today's marketplace, you can reach across the globe from your own bedroom, so there is something out there for everyone.

This book has useful information that will assist me in moving ahead with my plans to open my own business. I'm glad that I purchased it.
Small business a good alternative for women.......2007-06-10
At first I thought "here goes yet another book about women entrepreneurs." But, this one is actually different - you don't have to come up with your own idea of a brand new business to launch. Instead, Wilmerding focuses on how you can buy already existing businesses and franchises. While all of the information is practical, there are two really good sections including the one on partnering and the logistics of how to actually go about buying a business.
In my line of work, I get to see many well-intentioned women try to reinvent the wheel on a weekly basis (i.e. launch businesses in an already crowded and competitive market). This is why I applaud Wilmerding's focus on encouraging women to buy into existing businesses. In Hollywood they say there are no new stories, just different ways to tell it. I think unless you are creating an ipod or something truly new and different, sometimes it's best to look around for something to buy into that already has a track record.
On a related note - I attended a Working Mother's Symposium recently and the message I kept hearing over and over was that small businesses were better for working mom's especially those who are single moms or have alternative situations. So, by all means consider running your own business, but don't rule out the possibility that the right business for you is already out there.
basic introduction to different business types.......2007-05-02
This book is a good reference, or starting point when thinking about entrepreneurship. I wouldn't suggest it for someone who already strongly has a passion they'd like to pursue, however, as it does not go deep enough into each business path exploration.
It does seem to be a bit heavy on positives of franchising - if that's something you're considering looking into, it might be a big plus.
Not the most inspirational book I've read, but it is clear, informative and well-written.
Honestly, I have yet to read a book that truly has creative ideas on how to make the leap from a salaried job to the right small business with as little risk as possible, which I feel is what holds many back.
practical business advice and a terrific read.......2007-01-18
This is a useful book for anyone considering their business future. It's a reminder that all businesses have the same goal -- to make a profit for their owner or owners, efficiently.
Wilmerding hones in on an important secret: that the ownership of a small business can be highly profitable when time invested is factored in. She offers business options that all pass the test of contributing to life quality by bringing in money while fitting in with the owner's life requirements.
This book is practical because it offers other options than starting a business from scratch. It opens up the marketplace of small businesses and offers the tools to find the right business and evaluate it.
Its a great book for anyone in business because it's a reminder that business is not about glamour. My husband and business partner admires the clearheaded thinking of Smart Women and Small Business.
