Clear, Concise Trading Advice.......2007-10-10
I have traded stocks since I was a teen. I have been familiar with Dr. Elder for years. Along the way, I have read many books on trading. This ranks among the best.
Dr. Elder breaks the art and science of trading into three pillars. He calls them his three M's:
Mind
Market
Management
The key to winning the trading game is to win the battle within your mind. Dr, Elder, himself a practicing psychiatrist, explains how to develop discipline and to avoid the traps caused by emotional trading.
Second, he shows how to identify good trades using charts and computerized indicators. In remarkably clear and concise language, he explains the indicators and how to combine them to develop your own trading system.
Finally, he discusses importance of money management. The successful trader manages risk. Dr. Elder lays down the rules to harness it.
After reading this book, there is no doubt in my mind why this book has achieved a "Classic" status. It is well deserved. Dr. Elder has distilled more than 25 years of trading experience into a readable and insightful tome. Every trader who is serious about his or her markets should read it. Its gems of knowledge will cause it to become dog-eared in no time.
A path to follow.......2007-08-17
This is the best trading book I ever read. The technique showed by Mr. Elder to act automatic while the market are open and run fast instead of thinking is one of the best advice I ever heard. To be a sucessful trader you really need a defensive money management approach and a system to follow, it is much more important than simply identifying trends and bet right.
I rated this book 5 stars because I can't rate 6 or more. And yes I did some money with it. In fact this book already paid for itself...
I also reccomend Entries & Exits : Visits to 16 Trading Rooms (Wiley Trading) and The Complete Trading for a Living: The Legendary Approach to Trading with the Companion Study Guide from the same author.

The book is realy very good.
He talked in detail about almost everything.
Talked about psychology better than a whole book in one chapter " I have read a whole book about this topic and never get more information than what he said"
explained beautifuly and nicely, HOW the trade must be executed: from A to Z. I have not find yet a better method than his.
Was great showing us how money could and must be managed.
Disclsing his own trading diary is the top of what he made in the book. It is realy like inviting someone to your bedroom!! But for no pupose but to our favorit, he made it. Don't hesitate buy it now!

I bought this book for my wife since she likes stock trading. She told me this is a great book which worthes 5 starts. Although I know nothing about trading, I did spent some days on this book just for curiosity. However, I felt lost most of the time since the book talks some terms with less detail (e.g., k tail). I assume that only people who knows TA will benefit from this book, not the ones who know nothing about trading or TA yet. I guess the people may benefit more if buy the author's another book "Trade for a living". So I will give a 4 stars.

Dr. Elder provides some simple tools and great strategies for a beginner to learn trading and protect capital. He lays out achievable goals, plans, and shows his own "secret weapons". Great book!

I'm usually not so much into study guides as they add nothing new to the table except picking out some points of the theory. Well was I dead wrong on this guide. It is not so much about checking did you remember the right numbers and names as it is much more focused on did you shift you point of view ? And every answer is well documented what the most effective point of view could be. I've learned quite a bit more with working through this study guide. I recently purged the study guide from Entries and Exists as well work my way through that too, and in time for the finals, participate in one of the trading camps.
Recommended for every one out there in the markets learning to ride the waves instead of getting smashed by them.

If you have read "Come into my trading room" by Dr. Elder then this is a must have. It will enable you to test yourself and ensure that you understand the lessons presented in the book. I am a successful investor who aspires to trade for a living.(I have returned over 24% for the past 4 years). I have read over 40 books on trading and Dr. Elder's books are in a league of there own for being easy to understand and implement. He brings all essential disciplines that are needed together in one place. In this study guide you will be quizzed on mental discipline, basic charting, indicators, trading, day trading, advanced concepts, money management, and being organized. I have read all of his books and was shocked at how much I still didn't get. Buy it, use it, master it, you will be rewarded in the markets if you are a good student.

I have successfully used his Triple-Screen method for 25 years. His books are great because they help the trader find his own style and if you can't create variations on his work to suit yourself you are not there yet - read them again!

This is an elementary introduction to ancient religion, focusing on the issues in the title: cosmos, chaos, and the world to come. It considers ancient Egyptian religion, Mesopotamian religion, Vedic religion, Zoroastrianism, Judaism, and very early Christianity--all extremely briefly, focusing only on the issue of the cosmic struggle against chaos, and the development of the apocalyptic worldview. If you are only slightly aware of what all that could mean, this book will entertain you greatly. I am well aware of all of them, and I learned little beyond details from this book, and yet I enjoyed reading it very much.
However, if you want depth on any of these topics, there are other books for you. For Zoroastrianism, begin with Mary Boyce. For early Christianity, begin with E. P. Sanders and move on to Ehrman. For ancient Mediterranean religion, begin with "Religions of the Ancient World: A Guide." And consider "The Other God."
Cohn's argument that Zoroastrianism had a huge influence on ancient Judaism and Christianity, is in my opinion unquestionable, and yet neither emphasized nor even recognized in academic circles, nor widely known among the general public. Somehow it is perceived as embarrassing to Judaism, and yet I think that is ridiculous: after all, the influence on modern Judaism is minute, and who does Zoroastrianism threaten? Jesus, Paul, Hillel and the author(s) of Daniel were still Jews, even if influenced by Zoroastrianism. In fact, in my opinion, they are far more interesting! Similarly, isn't Christianity more interesting precisely because it assimilated so much "pagan" influence? So I hope this book is read widely and its argument more popularly acknowledged.

This is a brief but fascinating journey through the history of ancient apocalyptic faith. Cohn takes us to the very roots of civilization, explaining how the traditional cycles of life coincided with religious belief. The cycles of death and rebirth, day and night, summer and winter, mixed in with occasional droughts, floods, and enemy invasion mirrored religious belief in an ordered cosmos that was originally formed by the gods out of a pre-existent chaos. Cosmos wasn't absolutely secure however; chaos was always a threat to the daily ordered life of each civilization, so the benevolent gods continuously fought the "chaos monsters" that constantly threatened the ordered world. Complex pantheons and creation myths arose out of these beliefs and sacrifices and gifts were brought to the gods to give them strength and worship in their enduring battle of protection of the people against chaos.
Cohn takes us to the earliest religious beliefs of Egypt, Mesopotamia, the Vedic Indians, and the Zoroastrians describing their beliefs, interconnectedness, innovations, and future implications. He safely credits Zoroaster for the innovation of the first apocalyptic faith, the belief in a consummation of the never ending fight against chaos wherein the supreme god, Ahura Mazda would one day finally and forever defeat the gods of chaos; an age of prosperity, order, and goodness would then be ushered in.
Cohn then proceeds to Judaism and the specific experiences of the Israelites, particularly related to the Babylonian exile, when elite Jews discovered the compelling apocalyptic of Zoroastrianism and adapted it to their own faith in Yahweh. Christians co-opted and greatly expanded these beliefs with a firm conviction of a coming apocalypse and an elaborate cosmic battle myth at the end of the age.
Cohn doesn't waste words; there is a lot of information in these 240 pages, each sentence is filled with fascinating facts. I found his writing style slightly unconventional and it was difficult for me to absorb at times, I am re-reading several sections. I also wish Cohn would have addressed Islam and completed the apocalyptic story of the Middle Eastern religious faiths.

I am a longstanding fan of Cohn's writings. I read this book in a day, finding it extremely lucid and informative. It brought the cosmologies of the ancient world alive, showing how their underlying themes make sense to everyday lives of the time.
Another Fine Cohn Concoction.......2002-01-09
Norman Cohn contines his exemplary work as a historian of religious history with Cosmos, Chaos and the World to Come (The Ancient Roots of Apolcalytic Faith). This book begins a little drier than his previous works but picks up speed nicely with his discussions of Zorastrianism, Judaism, and very early Christianity while showing the connections between the former and the latter two in terms of its prophetic, apocalyptic writings. This book makes a nice companion piece to this author's earlier and seminal work on millenniarism during the medieval period. A fine addition to the Cohn canon.

Incredibly Helpful in Understanding Kant's Critique of Pure Reason.......2006-02-24
Simply put, modern philosophy begins with Kant. If anyone wishes to understand the development of philosophy after the 18th century, you must have some grounding in Kant. That said, his works are not easy to read, nor are they well-suited to leisurely reading. While most individuals try a stab at the Critique of Pure Reason, many seem to get lost in his argument.
For all you such individuals, the Prolegomena offers a handy guide to Kant's Critique of Pure Reason. This work is relatively short and far more accessible compared to the Critique. However, for a serious understanding of Kant, you must read this alongside the Critique of Pure Reason. Whereas the Prolegomena gives us a taste of the whole picture, the Critique provides us with all the details and nuances of his argument.
Lastly, the Hackett edition of this is quite nice in that it provides, at the end, a list of major words/phrases and the corresponding German.

This text is essentially a concise summary of the work accomplished by Kant in his Critique of Pure Reason, in which the great thinker answers the following: 1)How is pure mathematics possible? 2) How is pure natural science possible? 3)How is metaphysics in general possible? 4) How is metaphysics as a science possible? These are of course the most crucial topics in all transcendental thought, and this volume is possibly the most successful microcosm of Kant's thought. However, for all real students of Kant, the Critique must be read in its entirety.

best insomnia cure ever.......2004-04-20
People always think I'm making some sort of joke or being funny when I tell 'em they should read this here book if they're having trouble sleeping. I'm not. I tell them that the key to conking out while reading this book is to not merely skim along, reading it at a surface level, but to try to understand it. Put as much energy and effort into understanding it that you can. That will knock you out for a full night's sleep. Yup. If it doesn't put you to sleep, then you will have gained a critical understanding of one of the most influential works of modern philosophy...a field so dead that something written in 1772 is considered modern.
