Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very Helpful Book.......2007-01-16

I purchased the book since my employer explained that I will become an independent contractor for 2007. The book explained everything about being a contractor and how to stay in line with paying the taxes, how to protect my self employed status, what deductions I can take, and what forms and agreements I should use. I found it very informative and would recommend it to anyone who wants to understand the world of self employment.

5 out of 5 stars All the legal tips, tricks and traps explained.......2006-04-20

Plenty of books impart the basics of how to work independently - but too few include all the legal tips, tricks and traps involved. WORKING FOR YOURSELF: LAW & TAXES FOR INDEPENDENT CONTRACTORS, FREELANCERS & CONSULTANTS covers everything from setting appropriate fees and understanding how and when taxes are paid to limiting liability and getting paid. Record-keeping processes are simplified with sample logs and entry advice, chapters on how the IRS defines an independent contractor versus a paid employee are essential keys to keeping independent status, and advice on pricing and insurance offer key strategy-oriented tips and approaches. A 'must' for any who would work independently.

4 out of 5 stars Great straghtforward information and advice.......2005-09-17

I recently a started an S corp for my software contracting. The book is helpful and worth the price. It won't answer EVERY question you will have, but you probably should talk to a CPA for those anyway.

5 out of 5 stars Another Nolo Press Winner.......2005-07-28

My husband is an independent photographer, so the Nolo Press books are great for him, geared as they are to all those wishing to handle all the paperwork for themselves, instead of the usual array of lawyers, accountants, etc. He keeps it as a reference book and can easily turn to whatever subject he needs more information on. Well-written and easy to understand, as are all Nolo books, these books are wonderful to review periodically.

5 out of 5 stars Straighforward intro to the legal aspects of freelancing.......2004-05-04

A potential employer asked that I incorporate my freelancing business before they start sending me jobs. I wanted to do some research on the pros/cons of incorporating, what kind of start-ups costs this would entail, and what kind of corporation I should be. At first, the whole process of incorporating sounded like a huge money burden on my part--with filing fees and taxes--but this book has helped me sort out the issues and provided detailed information about the different ways to incorporate--sole proprietorship, LLC, S-corps. Although I haven't yet decided which path I will take, this book has made the jump to freelancing, and self-incorporating, less scary.

Not only do I understand my choices better, but I also now understand the different structures for businesses and their tax responsibilities. Great distillation of information! The copies of tax forms in the back are also a great reference. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Bottom Line for Small Business.......2007-07-02

Barbara Weltman's "Small Business Taxes 2007," is the best guide for charting your way through the record keeping, profit and loss statements, tax credits, deductions, depreciation & amortization, and cost of goods sold around for the person who files a Schedule C form with their 1040 IRS tax form.
The examples are clear, even though some have more 0's than a real small business person can imagine. She doesn't offer any gimmicks, make any promises or come-ons. Her work is straight forward, this is the Code, if it applies to your business you may use it. Readers appreciate the lack of hype which millions of Americans have learned to mistrust.
With any small business not everything applies to each individual -- this book is excellent for locating answers to the tough questions.
We did have some fun with the subtitle (JK Lasser's New Rules for Small Business Taxes) that taken at face value would read Lasser is making the rules not the IRS. But then with taxes a little humor is appreciated.
We used this volume extensively for our book and found the index very helpful in locating the material we needed and desired, when there really isn't much out there for so small a segment of the tax paying population.
Nash Black, author of "Taxes, Stumbling Blocks & Pitfalls for Authors 2007."

4 out of 5 stars complete guide for horse business success by Janet English.......2000-04-16

This guide provides most of the nesscesary tools and tips to start your own horse business. Providing information that allows one to confidently pursue this venture. This book gave me the confidence to proceed with my business knowing all the facts up front. It allowed me to handle purchases and tax formalities without feeling like I didn't know what I was doing. Great starter book! I have read "starting you own horse business" by Mary Ashby Mcdonald. While her book is informative and gives examples not covered in the previous book, it serves basically to complement other books on this issue.

3 out of 5 stars Official Guide for tax cheats.......2005-12-30

This book is a love it or hate it guide to auditing horse activities. That's why I had to go middle of the road on the review. I believe it is mistakently marketed to legitimate horse stables, breeding farms, training barns and businesses who want to assure themselves that they won't fail an audit. However, if you ARE indeed a legitimate business, this guide probably won't tell you anything you don't already know. This guide's merit is mostly for backyard or recreational horse owners who are attempting to pass their hobbies off as a "business," or those who list their personal horses as a business expense to attempt some extra tax savings. That being said, you know what category you fall into. If your primary business is horses, whether it be breeding, teaching, training, transporting, etc., don't waste your time or money on this one. If however, you are a retiree who would like to try to pass off your 3 backyard nags that you occasionally breed as a "business" read away. And let me know what jail is like in a couple of years =-)

4 out of 5 stars Small Business Answers.......2007-09-05

"Self-Employed Tax Solutions" is an excellent self help start to treating your cottage industry as a business and working your way through the intricacies of filing federal taxes as a small business. Ms. Walker's explanations are clear and well illustrated.
We had no trouble understanding each point and applying the rules to our own small business situation. The only problem we found was her citing a court ruling, putting it in quotes, and not providing a bibliographic source.
Both the glossary and the index are adequate for the novice readers. The style was breezy and light, which made the reading easy.
A good place to start for an entry level "indie" who needs basic tax information. She has several "wish I'd thought of that" ideas for keeping records and saving time.
Nash Black, author of "Taxes, Stumbling Blocks and Pitfalls for Authors."

5 out of 5 stars Self-employed Tax Solutions.......2007-06-13

Easy to understand. I am new to it all and learned quickly thanks to Junes pesentation of the material. Also will be a great reference manual come actual tax time!

5 out of 5 stars Learn about taxes. Without pain........2007-03-30

I highly recommend this book! I am about to graduate design school and am starting up a sole proprietorship. I realized I know absolutely nothing about what I'm getting into tax-wise, so I picket this up on Amazon. An excellent buy! This book is incredibly easy to read and understandable, despite the fact that you would expect the subject matter to be painfully dry. It's not. The world of taxes isn't half as painful and boring as I expected it to be, thanks to this book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2006-12-30

This is a very well written book that provides a lot of insights to self-employed people. Provides very good ideas on deductions and methods to legally cut the self-employed person's overall tax burden.

4 out of 5 stars A Few Issues but Holding a Few Gems Too.......2006-12-24

I pretty much never comment about the font a book is done in, but let me start out my review by saying that this book had the oddest font choice I've seen. The letters were very thin, squarish, and actually hard to read against the white. It made me realize just how important something like font can be in a book.

So, on to the content. This book is written by a self-employed person, for self-employed people, to help them manage their records for taxes. She doesn't want you to DO your taxes - she wants you to hire someone, like her, to do them for you :). She just wants you to be informed about what is going on, and to perhaps help prod your tax person along if they're not very good.

In case you were thinking this book was a mere "nice to have", she says in her introduction that "Such complications [of not handling this properly] could prove fatal to your enterprise." I love it how books say "you must buy me or you will DIE A HORRIBLE DEATH!!!" A page later, she promises "If you use this method, you will never miss a tax deduction" which I sort of doubt :) So this book has already hit a few of my buttons in book reading - threatening certain doom if I don't get the book, promising the moon, and being hard to read :)

Much of the first part of the book focusses on whether you should go into business for yourself, what it means to be self employed, and whether you should be a DBA, Sole Proprietor, LLC, etc. Hopefully anybody looking for tax solutions has already gone through those stages and isn't looking for all their information on these important decisions in a few pages of a tax book.

But on to the meat. When you get into the realm of *taxes*, the book really does well. It explains the difference between personal gifts (tax deductible up to $25 per person per year), entertainment expenses, free giveaway items (pens etc), charity donations, and more, in very clear language.

The book goes into travel deductions, home office deductions, leasing and buying equipment. It gives a ton of examples. Some people might find them annoying - I admit that many of them are quite silly. Still, it's easy enough to skip over them if you're not into cutesy examples, but if they help you absorb a concept, they are there for you to read.

Like with any business book, there are a lot of very common sense things in here - but a few very key tips. The interesting thing is of course that depending on who reads it, they might find different things to be fascinating vs well known. Something that one person says "of course" to, someone else might say "That'll save me thousands!" So it's good that all bases are covered in here.

Well recommended as a book to at least get out from your local library, or to get and share around your network of business-owning friends. It's not a book that I need to sit on my library shelf, but it was worthwhile to read and glean a few important tidbits from. I'll now pass it along to other business owners to let them pick out their own gems.

5 out of 5 stars This Book Saved Me .......2004-09-10

I bought this book as soon as I was notified of an upcoming IRS audit. The sections on reconstructing logs and receipts really saved me. The auditor accepted everything that I reconstructed. I also knew exactly what to expect at the audit. I am now keeping my records in a way that leaves me unafraid of the IRS anymore. This book, along with Mr. Daily's "Stand Up To the IRS" is the best investment I have ever made in my small business.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Buy.......2004-06-19

I am fan of the nolo.com website and I am a bigger fan of the Nolo Books. We started our software company as and LLC and turned it into a corporation a couple of years ago. I didn't buy this book before that point, but wish I did. Either way it is great that I have the book now. The book is well organized and I read through it cover to cover originaly. Tax Savvy now sits on my desk and I can use it as a quick reference. I am the kind of person that likes to know the "what, how and why" before I talk to our accountants or our lawyers, and this book enables me to do that. Bottom line... a must have

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2004-05-18

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!! This book has saved my business thousands of dollars! Amazingly it is both comprehensive and accessible. Daily is hugely knowlegable and a great writer. He lays out strategy after strategy to minimize wasted time and maximize profit. I thought I knew what I was doing before but this book has opened up whole new worlds of opportunity for me. I better learned what I can and can't deduct, how to take advantage of fringe benefits, how to reduce IRS penalties and much more. Tax Savvy for Small Business is literally worth its weight in gold.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent overview - concise and to the point........2003-08-11

This guide is different from the many tax guides out there from big names like Ernst & Young, etc. because it is more focussed on small businesses and you get the most relevant information in the most concise fashion. There in lies the limitation of this great book. You may have to refer to the other tax guides if your particular situation is too unique.

But the conciseness and focussed approach was extremely helpful in clarifying a lot of points for me. I had tried reading several of the bigger guides (with three times as many pages as this book) and gotten confused because it was too much information. So when I saw the Nolo guide, I was pleasantly surprised that every topic in the book was relevant to me as a small business owner! It was perfect for my needs. I now started understanding the very same topics I had so much difficulty following in the other books. For example - I was trying to research the differences between S Corporations and LLCs. When I opened this Nolo guide, I went straight to the chapter on LLCs and read the section - Comparing LLCs with Other Entities. In one sentence I knew the difference between these two entities! According to the book, the basic difference being that you can allocate income and expenses disproportionately (to share ownership) in an LLC but not in a S Corporation! Wow! I liked the speed with which I could find this critical piece of information I was researching.

The book is divided into 6 parts - The Basics (Business Income and Tax Deductible Expenses, Recordkeeping and Accounting, etc.), The Form of Your Business (Sole Proprietorships, Partnerships, S Corporations, etc.), Thinking Small (Family Businesses, Microbusinesses and Home-Based Businesses), Fringe Benefits (Retirement Plans etc.), Buying or Selling a Business, and Dealing with the IRS. There isn't a single page that is irrelevant.

If you have very advanced questions, you are better off looking through a bigger book but you would benefit tremendously by reading this book first. It will give you a firm grounding in the basics across the board. Good luck!

5 out of 5 stars Good ways to save tax dollars.......2002-09-03

This book not only explains deductions but offers good ideas for saving tax dollars. Highly recommended for folks that have some accounting or tax knowledge. Excellent reference if you're thinking of starting a business, or you already have.

Book Description

This easy-to-read and understand book is invaluable for women (and men) who are already in business or just starting to be self-employed, and who are trying to learn exactly what tax responsibilities they have.

Not just a tax-season book, but a year round guide, Minding Her Own Business provides complete tax and recordkeeping information for self-employed people and independent contractors. Readers will learn about the different business entities (sole-proprietor, LLC, corporation, partnership), what the tax differences are between being an employee and a self-employed person, which business expenses are deductible and what proof the IRS expects to see, how to reduce your chances of being audited, whether you need to make quarterly estimated tax payments (and how to calculate the amount to send), how to deduct a home office (or should you?), whether you can deduct your business vehicle (and what records you need), how to choose a tax preparer or a bookkeeper, what taxes self-employed people pay, which tax forms are filed by sole proprietors, whether it's a good idea to prepare your own return using a tax preparation program, how to set up a simple record keeping system, and much much more.

This recently published 4th edition of Minding Her Own Business contains the general information you'll need to prepare your own 2004 tax return (or to get ready your materials for your preparer) and also for doing your 2005 tax planning.

Unlike some tax books, Minding Her Own Business is not an academic book. It is not written in legal language. It was written by a tax preparer (enrolled agent) who has been preparing tax returns for self employed people for more than 25 years. She has prepared over 8,000 tax returns and currently has 400 tax clients with whom she uses this information every day! The author has also been teaching small business tax seminars throughout the country for more than 20 years so she has a very good idea of what questions self-employed people have about taxes. You'll find those questions (and the answers) inside Minding Her Own Business.

Terry Savage in the Chicago Sun-Times wrote about Minding Her Own Business, 'If you have your own business or are thinking about starting one, you need this book.'

Paul Tulenko in The Atlanta Business Chronicle wrote: 'Clearly written and superbly easy to use. One of the best I've seen on the essentials of keeping books and paying taxes.'

Anna Marks, publisher of Bay Area BusinessWoman wrote "Women business owners should not be without this book. It's like having a tax professional by your side at all times."

Small business columnist Jane Applegate wrote, "Minding Her Own Business is a great addition to anyone's business library. Zobel has the ability to explain financial issues in a clear and understandable manner."

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for small business owners.......2007-07-13

This book is the best I have read when it comes to breaking down financial information needed to run your own business. I used this book in every step of my business setup.

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-03-15

Highly recommended. Everything is described very simple and clear. And oh, boy, when it comes to taxes, there is a reason we hire someone to prepare the documents. Now I know so much, I am going to do it myself this year.

4 out of 5 stars Great book to add to your library.......2005-09-30

I found this book easy to read and understand. Each of the topics were described in just enough detail - enough to give you the essentials needed to keep your books, yet not so much that you got lost in irrelevant details. I read it in one day. Sure to be referenced for years to come.

5 out of 5 stars The monetary basics every business owner has to know.......2005-04-06

3 out of 5 stars I Would Have Faired Better Using the Knowledge I Already Had.......2007-01-09

This book has not given me any new information, everything I read was something I already knew.

It may be helpful to someone who doesn't have the time to go on the internet and gather free information.

5 out of 5 stars difference between "owning a job" and "owning a business".......2006-01-17

This book is the single most important book I've read concerning creation and operation of a business. When Robert pointed out the difference between "owning a job" and "owning a business" I realized I only owned a job. I now own a business. I've made this work required reading for everyone involved in the management of my company, including the CPA. I've ordered dozens of copies over the last 3 years and give them away to people who I care to see succeed.

4 out of 5 stars The single most important business book I have read.......2004-06-13

Robert E. Fleury's The Small Business Survival Guide presents a system for organizing your paperwork and staying on top of the financial condition of your company. The system is at once simple, convenient, and perpetually audit-ready. Best of all, it allows you to accurately understand your cash flow so that you're able to make sound business decisions.

Think you can delegate all this to your accountant? Not so. Standard reports don't forecast actual cash requirements, so you see only half the picture. Example: paying down debt doesn't show on a Profit and Loss statement; the statement may show a healthy profit, but the profit may have all gone toward paying off a bank note, so you can't assume that the money is available to spend.

Though the system is great, the writing is in places terribly obscure. The book also appears to be victim to a major, half-finished revision. One symptom is that the reader is asked to do a cash analysis for a case study in chapter 10, but cash analysis is not introduced until chapter 13. Revision errors abound, such as several discrepancies between dollar amounts shown in the case study's cancelled checks and those shown in the finished reports and the text explanation. It's extra work for the reader to figure out what the author meant, versus what he said. Ironically, though, arguing with the author can increase the depth of your understanding of the material, so it's not all bad. Nevertheless, let's hope that a future edition will correct these faults.

In spite of the writing, the system is so powerful that I'll only deduct one star. Yes, it's that good.

(I reviewed the third edition.)

5 out of 5 stars Scared me silly. . but probably saved my business.......2000-11-30

. . yikes. The "Cycle of Demise" is a phrase that will ring in my ears every time I make a mistake but this book is the first one I have read on the subject that ended up empowering me to write my business proposal . . after reading the whole thing I am anxious to begin and not afraid of the accounting.

5 out of 5 stars Clear, concise and eye-opening information........1999-05-22

Of the many books that profess to help one start and run a business, this book provides eye-opening and thought provoking content that will give the budding entrepreneur a solid grasp on cash management and the realities of traditional accounting. An absolute 'must-read'!

2 out of 5 stars Not really updated for 2006.......2007-01-15

I was disappointed to find this was really a 2005 book with a 2006 cover. While I found much of what I needed to know, I had to visit the IRS website for current 2006 limits on depreciation.

5 out of 5 stars Very informative........2006-11-03

JK Lasser's Small Business Taxes 2006 gives the reader a comprehensive overview of what a small business owner needs to know about how to organize expenses into deductions, and what the different rules are for different types of business entities. We were particularly interested in understanding how LLCs were taxed. Since you can tax an LLC as a sole proprietorship, partnership, corporation or S-corporation (based on your particular LLC characteristics), the fact that the book covers how each of these tax scenarios works was very useful in helping us decide which status was more convenient for our business.

5 out of 5 stars Wow - this book has saved me thousands!.......2006-07-01

Great book, nice level of detail. Mix this with QuickBooks and you have most of your small business financials covered.

5 out of 5 stars Very Helpful Book.......2006-03-25

I found the information in this book to be very helpful. She really covers all the bases. great resource and highly recommended

3 out of 5 stars Very concise - but it did not help me.........2006-03-10

This book gave me a good introduction to the issues, but also made it clear that I would not manage without solid advice from a tax consultant - maybe even a tax lawywer - on some of the issues that I had in my business. Maybe there is no simple way to do your taxes today?
