5 out of 5 stars Great tool to have!.......2007-09-05

It is very useful for everyday people, students and real estate professionals. It explains the real estate concepts in simple words, so that even a person that knows nothing about real estate understands it.

Excellent reference book - I keep it nearby and use it on a regular basis.

This is a good reference book to have laying around the office. Whether a debate on a definition, or the answer is on the tip of the tongue, you can find it in this helpful dictionary.
Unless you have a photographic memory this book will be a good investment.
Knowing how and where to find the answer to a real estate related question is as valuable as knowing the answer. Good study guide for newbies also. It pays to enhance your word power. Get one....

as someone who works in real estate, i find myself refering to this dictionary all the time. this is probably the best pocket sized dictonary on real estate on the market. great value.

5 out of 5 stars Great reference to keep handy!.......2007-02-02

I bought this book when I first started as an analyst two years ago. It helped immensely when terms were thrown around in a meeting and I didn't know what they meant. This book comes with easy to understand definitions, formulas, and examples. I don't need it as often anymore, but it still comes in handy when I want to double check on something, or when I'm writing memos. I recommend this to every new analyst that walks through the door!

    5 out of 5 stars Big Help.......2007-10-08

I had to study for the RE exams and this was a big help. I downloaded it on my Ipod and whenever I am on the bus or train or relaxed I would listen to it. I did pass my RE exams on the first try.

5 out of 5 stars Best Real Estate 'dictionary'.......2007-03-11

Recommended by a highly respected RE instructor for my broker class as being the best book of its kind - well worth the puchase - easy to read; will be a much used desktop reference for all aspects of real estate transactions.

5 out of 5 stars An invaluable reference for anyone involved in real estate.......2007-01-11

This book was required when I took that first real estate course you need to get your license. (I chose not to get my license since I'm just an investor. Not exactly relevant, but it tells you the kind of person I am and my perspetive as a reviewer.) I'm thankful because it made that course much easier. I've since taken many courses and read many real estate contracts and this book has helped me through everything.

It's like a dictionary except the explanations vary in length from a couple lines all the way up to several pages. As others have mentioned, I really value the many relevant cross-references each entry includes. It allows you to get a fuller picture of something you look up because it allows you to look up similar items or related topics. It's fine to know the definition of something, but sometimes, what's really useful is to compare it to something similar so that you have a context for how to distinguish between the two. As a simple example, if someone was offering something as tenants-in-common and you looked it up, you might think, "okay that makes sense," but unless you compare it with tenants-in-partnership or joint-tenants, you really don't know what you're dealing with.

Some people are complaining because the book has Spanish translations. I assumed it was some new edition that had added these. Nope. I just checked and mine has it too. It doesn't detract from the book at all. I hadn't even noticed it. And the Spanish-English appendicies are only 15 pages out of 468 total. What's the problem? That's probably a useful tool if you're from Texas or Calfornia, like the author.

Anyway, this is the second most often used reference book I own. (Second only to The Synonym Finder by Rodale, an awesome alternative to a thesaurus.)

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Real Estate Reference Book.......2006-08-08

As a community college real estate instructor, and as the book review editor for a national real estate magazine, I read a lot of real estate books. As a writer myself, I do a lot of research. In the reference category, this book is number one on my list. As I said in my review of a previous edition of the book: "I never leave home for the classroom without it." If you are enrolled in a real estate licensing class this book will be particularly valuable to you, since you're essentially learning a new language - the language of real estate. The feature that makes it particularly valuable is the fact that when it defines a term, it gives references to all related terms in the book. By the time you review them all, you'll have excellent insight into the topic. The primary author, John Reilly, has a background as an attorney, real estate professional, educator, and author. The co-author, Marie Spokek, is a nationally know real estate educator. In my office I have a special shelf above my computer for the real estate books to which I refer the most often. This book occupies a prominent spot. Dr. Ken Edwards, Book Review Editor, The Real Estate Professional magazine.

    4 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource.......2006-03-18

This book was great. I just passed my real estate exam and the book was a great reference for those subjects that were not clear in the classroom. I will be able to use this book throughout my real estate career. Well worth the money!

    Book Description

Olmos/Jacobus' quick-reference dictionary provides nearly 2,000 terms in BOTH English and Spanish covering all the essential areas for real estate. Comprehensive coverage, easy-to-find definitions, simple explanations, terminology used on licensing examinations, and numerous illustrations make this a handy reference tool. This up-to-date bi-lingual dictionary is a “must have” for practicing real estate agents, licensees and consumers.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Okay if you only need only a few real estate terms........2006-05-13

In reality, any dealings in real estate also require terms in related fields, such as finance, taxes, accounting, banking, law, and more. This dictionary provides about 2,000 entries. A decent selection of terms pertaining to some areas of real estate. Realistically, a bilingual dictionary in real estate would need many more entries to properly cover this and related fields.

There are complete business dictionaries which cost about the same as this one. The Oxford Spanish Business Dictionary provides about 50,000 translations, and Webster's New World English-Spanish/Spanish-English Business Dictionary has over 100,000. That means that for each term in this dictionary there are 50 in Webster's New World English-Spanish/Spanish-English Business Dictionary.

If you buy one of these two you get thousands of real estate terms plus many thousands of terms that you are likely to need anyway if you work in real estate or related fields. Therefore, I recommend buying The Oxford Spanish Business Dictionary or Webster's New World English-Spanish/Spanish-English Business Dictionary instead of this one.

5 out of 5 stars A superb resource for real estate salesmen.......2004-08-13

English-Spanish Real Estate Dictionary is a handy compilation of 2,000 real estate terms and definitions for quick translation from English to Spanish or Spanish to English. For maximum convenience, each English and Spanish definition is listed side by side; the first half of the book organizes the entries in English alphabetical order, the second half in Spanish alphabetical order. A superb resource for real estate salesmen, home owners, prospective home owners, and anyone seeking to pass the real estate licensing exam.

5 out of 5 stars Lucid and Informative.......2004-08-11

As a newcomer to real estate it is important to get the basics down before engaging in the process. To borrow a builders metaphor -- you need to start with a solid foundation and then build up from there... Jack Harris's Barron's real estate handbook is a wonderful and lucid introduction from within which one gets information to build from a solid foundation. One of the more valuable aspects of the book is how Harris brings everything down to its most basic component and if for that alone it is worth the money. Computations are broken down to their most basic and elemental components, house type as well as engineering terms and real estate jargon are simplified but not simplistic, and terms are well explained. A valuable tool for every potential or current homeowner.

This is a great book to have a available for the beginner real estate agent. This book was essential in assistaing me in passing the Real Estate License Exam the first time. It allowed me access to tons of terms which aren't readily available in other books. Now that i am just getting started in selling real estate it has become a life saver when I run across terms I don't know. Sure, it's not something you would read next to the fireplace, but it's a nice reference to have sitting in the office!

5 out of 5 stars The Complete Dictionary of Real Estate Terms Explained Simply .......2007-03-20

Jeff Haden, a little known name in the real estate world may just become very well known with this very complete dictionary of real estate terminology. Coming from the legal profession, I believe that any real estate or title attorney needs to have this book in their reference library. We might be calling the checking of real estate terms as "Hadenizing." Check this out! Where else can you find real estate terminology that explains how the terms came into existence, how they pertain to you in the ever active marketplace, and instruct you how you can improve your real estate business. Sometimes, I go back to my old Army days. When I was in Basic Training we were given a book that was referred to by the Drill Sergeants as the Smart Book. It contained all the rules we were to know by the end of the training course. Literally, all the rules, definitions, and it came with quick references to allow you to pinpoint what the Drill was trying to scream at you to learn. That was a lot of stress for a young guy in training... and there is just as much stress when you have thousands of dollars involved and it is up to your expertise to get the job done. Well that's just where this book fits in, a rule book that gives you what you need to know in a business that seems to be turning different directions with every wind blow. I'm not trying to say that you can't go it on your way without this book, but why try learning what has already been learned... just move on and use a book like this to help you become the best darn real estate agent in the business. And one thing I do know is that you can't know everything. A good reference is what all the successful professionals use and here it is! This book is thorough and very complete. Real estate agents, both with prior experience or newly licensed, need to keep this as a reference as well. Don't get me wrong; this book isn't just for the experts!! It's built for the laymen just getting into property investment and novice house flippers. Good work Jeff! Keep on "Hadenizing" the real estate terms.

5 out of 5 stars Essential reference book for every real estate investor.......2007-03-13

Haden's dictionary is just that: a dictionary. This book is not a "how to" manual that you typically see in the real estate investor section at your local bookstore; instead, this book is the reference that should accompany every other book you've bought. It is arranged like a standard dictionary, with terms in alphabetical order and cross-referenced where appropriate. There is no index, but finding the term you need is simple since they are arranged so logically.

Each definition is explained in simple, everyday English. Unlike many specialized dictionaries I've seen, these explanations do not require you to look up five more words in order to understand them. Everything you need is contained in that entry, right where you need it. Also, if a term usually has an acronym associated with it, that acronym is also provided.

"The Complete Dictionary of Real Estate Terms" explains almost all of the terms you would need, from the relatively simple terms like "open house" and "commission" to the more complex subjects including dispossess proceedings, gift causa mortis, and short-term capital gain. I recommend buying a copy of this book and keeping it with you wherever you do business (your desk, your car, your office, etc.) so that you will not let the lingo slow down your profits.

5 out of 5 stars A perfect pick for both specialty college-level courses in real estate and the general-interest library........2007-03-05

Real estate terms can be quite confusion and while other references weave definitions into the mix, for a fine A-Z coverage with simpler explanations than most, choose The Complete Dictionary of Real Estate Terms Explained Simply. Subjects range from debts, escheat, recital, devisee and more specialty terms but definitions are geared to consumers, investors and others both within and outside the industry, making it a perfect pick for both specialty college-level courses in real estate and the general-interest library.

5 out of 5 stars Don't even think off buying real estate without this book.......2007-01-30

"The Complete Dictionary of Real Estate Terms Explained Simply" gives the reader everything the title promises. It is packed with 2,400 words or phrases used in the world of real estate. Each entry is explained in terminology that is easy for anyone to understand. It would be a good idea to have this book before speaking to a real estate agent. You will be able to refer to the dictionary to understand what the real estate agent is telling you, while giving the appearance of having past real estate experience. This book definitely will give you the edge when dealing with real estate transactions.

I would recommend this comprehensive reference resource for both seasoned real estate investors and anyone considering entering into a real estate transaction.

5 out of 5 stars Superb Reference Source for Real Estate.......2007-01-27

With real estate having become such a popular investment choice--either for one's primary residence, second home, or rental property--it is crucial to have a definitive, reliable source of industry information. This dictionary definitely delivers what its title promises: a complete explanation, in understandable language, of real estate terms.

As a result, interested readers can cut through the labyrinth of terms. The book's easy-to-use, comprehensive list of terms includes 2,400 definitions. Every term from the simple, such as "abstract of title," to the difficult, such as "pipestem lot," is defined. Jeff Haden has certainly taken out the guesswork of the real estate world.

For anyone investing in real estate or simply buying or selling their home, this is an invaluable guide.

    3 out of 5 stars Good resource!.......2001-10-25

This is a very helpful resource in the field, but I didn't find it to be as beneficial as another source. Students who bought this dictionary complained of the high cost for low gain.

The content itself is excellent, though I couldn't always find the terms I sought. The bilingual explanations are helpful.

Buy this book at the used price and the other one and you will have most of the words you need.

1 out of 5 stars Do not buy this one!.......1999-03-14

This book was the biggest disappointment! The translations were terrible and you would do better to buy a good English/Spanish Dictionary.

    1 out of 5 stars A disaster!.......1999-02-03

The translations of English terms into Spanish in this book are a disaster. Condition precedent is translated as "condición precedente," but it's actually called "condición suspensiva" in Spanish. Buydown is unhelpfully "translated" as "descuento de intereses buydown." The translation of "alienation" is misspelled: enajención [sic]. Party wall, which is muro medianero in Spanish, is mistranslated as "muro divisorio." Statute of frauds, which is el requisito de hacer constar un acto jurídico por escrito, is mistranslated as "estatuto sobre fraudes," which means "bylaws about fraud." Similarly, statutory lien, which should be "gravamen legal," is translated as "gravamen estatutario," which means "lien mandated by the bylaws." Every real estate agent on Earth should have one of these dictionaries on his desk. I get so fed up with agents using fuzzy terms when they could look in a book like this and use exactly the correct term.

Legally, a wrong or fuzzy term could spell financial disaster for both an agent or a home buyer or seller. Any investor or property owner should have this book since so many laws apply to their holdings.

This dictionary includes all the common and even seldom-used realty terms to cover virtually any kind of real estate transaction, from IRC 1031 property exchanges to residential, condo, townhome, planned unit development (PUD) and every other kind of possible transaction.

Even if you just own a home, this is a reference book that ought to be on your book shelf.

5 out of 5 stars Not only how Wall Street works, but how to work Wall Street.......2007-10-22

With such an exhaustive table of contents, you might assume this is an exhausting book. But the author prevents exhaustion, not only with a crisp writing style, but with a creative arrangement of the definitions. Yes, other dictionaries are strictly alphabetical. That's probably the reason that people read how-to books and novels, and they don't read dictionaries. But "Wall Street Lingo" organizes its definitions by category. Instead of hunting up and down the alphabet to define an unfamiliar word in another definition, the author puts all related terms together. Read a section, you'll understand a whole area of investing. Yet each piece is short, of course - definition sized - so you'll reach a stopping place before you get tired. For concepts that require more explanation, the author provides a brief, understandable summary. The result: you not only learn how Wall Street works, but how you can work Wall Street. The author provides simple explanations of rules and laws (and how they are bent, broken and enforced), basic finance and accounting, corporate structure, and types of investments. She even reviews common investment strategies, charting, and stock analysis. You'll learn about everything from the Dead Cat Bounce to the Ticker Tape Parade. A great general references for the investor.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Reference Tool!.......2007-08-22

In this book, the author takes what seems to be an overwhelming amount of information on the subject of Wall Street and organizes it into easy to locate sections and chapters. This fact, more than anything else, is what I think sets this book apart from many other financial reference books. While many reference books (particularly in the financial realm) that I have read lay out information alphabetically and join them with confusing financial jargon, this book does a good job of defining the many phrases and words associated with Wall Street and putting them into layman's terms. As a result, I would recommend this book to anyone starting out in the world of Wall Street. Since I have had no previous experience at all with investing on Wall Street, I must say that the sheer volume of the text was overwhelming. But the organization of the book really helps and I think it will be even more helpful to those who have already dabbled some in the stock market and are looking for an easy to understand reference tool.

Another aspect of the book I found particularly helpful was the various breakout boxes that accompanied the chapters. These breakout boxes, noted by the title "a closer look," essentially took some of the more complicated or important terms (such as momentum investing and initial public offering) and helped clarify them even more than they were in the initial definition. This style is also helpful because it immediately drew my attention to the most important thing on the page. All in all, I found this book to be full of extremely relevant and helpful information. However, it is important to keep in mind that this book is by no means easy reading. While the terms themselves are simply defined, the sheer complexity and wealth of information about the stock market and Wall Street requires more than one leisurely read. I would recommend that those interested in getting started in Wall Street investing read the book once, then keep it close by as a reference book and search tool.

5 out of 5 stars The author holds some thirty years of experience .......2007-06-09

Nora Peterson's WALL STREET LINGO: THOUSANDS OF INVESTMENT TERMS EXPLAINED SIMPLY provides a finance dictionary not for the seasoned investor but for the everyday individual. It defines stockbroker terms and explains them easily, adopting a subject-oriented organization for quick and easy reference and pairing of terms and translating Wall Street jargon into easily-understood points. The author holds some thirty years of experience and her background charting futures and trading in securities lends authority to this primer, perfect for business library collections.

5 out of 5 stars Gotta Love The Lingo!!!.......2007-03-23

I wouldn't go to a foreign country without a phrase dictionary and I wouldn't consider doing investment research without Wall Street Lingo by my side. As author Nora Peterson points out, what happens on Wall Street doesn't stay on Wall Street. If you want to put your hard-earned money to work earning a solid ROI (return on investment) rather than taking a Random Walk and hoping for the best, you need this dictionary.

With the wealth of information available on the internet, there is no reason why you can't make informed decisions about how and where to put your money to work for you. Fortunes are made by understanding the details involved in corporate investing but those all-important details are frequently hiding behind special terms and techniques that investors need to learn. Wall Street Lingo bridges the gap with quick, easy-to-understand definitions and related terms so that you can cut to the chase and make good choices.

The bottom line is that if you want to know what people are up to, you have to understand their language. Investors, business students and anyone whose job depends directly or indirectly on corporate America should own this book.

5 out of 5 stars One of the must-have references for individual investors.......2007-03-20

Before using this dictionary, I wouldn't have been able to tell you that a "dead cat bounce" is when the stock crashes and then rises slightly or that a "beauty contest" is when a company tours prospective underwriters before an IPO (which, by the way, is an Initial Public Offering). The arrangement of the terms, not in alphabetical order, but by category, helps when you are generally working on a particular area.

Each term is also cross-referenced with any other terms which would be useful. While this is useful, I wish Peterson had also added the page numbers to the cross-references. This would save a step in the look-up process (instead of going back to the index and then finding out it was on the page before the one you were previously on). Other than that, I can't find any complaints with this reference. I know very little about investing, but was able to understand the definitions easily. It makes a great book to have on the shelf when reading the NYT or Wall Street Journal.

The best thing about this reference is the list of acronyms and internet resources found at the end of the book. This alone would justify the price of the book as I have used these lists extensively. Overall, I would recommend this as one of the essential references to have on your desk.

4 out of 5 stars Essential Dictionary of Real Estate.......2006-03-18

Useful book, especially when I'm stuck for an understandable definition of a real estate term. Some of the definitions are different than those given in the real estate class I'm taking. Then again, some terms have more than one definition, and both are correct. Not state-specific. This is for national.
