Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent reference book!!!!!!!.......2007-03-09

If you are in the telecom or IT industry or just want to familiarize yourself with terminology and practices relating to both, YOU MUST OWN THIS BOOK! A lot of the definitions are understandably technical but Harry Newton manages to be very informative AND amusing with his casual, down-to-earth writing style.

3 out of 5 stars Its ok.......2006-12-14

Used it for a class, but some of the definitions in this book were out of this world. Made for a good laugh. If you have it, look up flasher...

5 out of 5 stars Everything but the "Kitchen Sink".......2006-11-10

I needed a reference for Telecommunications that I could reference and fall back on while preparing for a Civil Service test to keep my job. Invaluable would be the word I would use. You may never need to use more then 2% of this book but what you need is almost garanteed to be in it if it has to do with Telecom.
Just an everyday Telecomm Info Systems Tech. DL

5 out of 5 stars The BOOK for Telecommunications.......2006-10-07

This should be a mandatory book for anyone working in the telecommunications industry. Not only is it comprehensive, but the explanations are direct, easily understood and sometimes humorous. Anyone who uses "oxymoron" in an explanation gets my vote.

5 out of 5 stars What if Daniel Webster had an irrepressible sense of humor?.......2006-08-26

I have been buying regularly updated editions of Newton's Telecom Dictionary for fifteen years now and will continue to do so as long as Harry keeps 'em coming.

I'll admit that once in a while an obscure TLA or FLA (4 and 5 Letter Acronyms) will sneak beneath Harry's radar but it doesn't happen very often. Especially when he is so willing to research tips sent to him by his loyal readers!

I have found this dictionary to be indispensible in my job as a telco engineer. Harry does a great job of defining telco terms and acronyms in plain English and not by using other complex terms and acronyms. This is much more significant than it sounds at first. It is simply impossible for any professional to know every last obscure acronym and term used in this expansive and ever-growing industry over the past 100 years. Harry will help to make sure that you never have to ask anyone else what in the heck their TLA's mean. You will be the Alpha-geek. All others will bow in your presence. Life will be good.

Newton's Telecom Dictionary has one more unique trait. Harry's wry sense of humor has threaded itself into many of the definitions. This is one of those rare tomes that you can sit down with and randomly read for enjoyment. Whenever there is an interesting and/or humorous story behind a telco term, Harry inevitably includes it with the definition. This dictionary can be fun to read! This is especially nice if someone walks into your work space and catches you reading your dictionary. They will never suspect you of goofing off!

Product Description

An intuitive, yet precise introduction to probability theory, stochastic processes, and probabilistic models used in science, engineering, economics, and related fields. This is the currently used textbook for "Probabilistic Systems Analysis," an introductory probability course at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, attended by a large number of undergraduate and graduate students. The book covers the fundamentals of probability theory (probabilistic models, discrete and continuous random variables, multiple random variables, and limit theorems), which are typically part of a first course on the subject. It also contains, a number of more advanced topics, from which an instructor can choose to match the goals of a particular course. These topics include transforms, sums of random variables, least squares estimation, the bivariate normal distribution, and a fairly detailed introduction to Bernoulli, Poisson, and Markov processes. The book strikes a balance between simplicity in exposition and sophistication in analytical reasoning. Some of the more mathematically rigorous analysis has been just intuitively explained in the text, but is developed in detail (at the level of advanced calculus) in the numerous solved theoretical problems. The book has been widely adopted for classroom use in introductory probability courses within the USA and abroad.

The shipping was very fast and the book was just as described. I would recommend this seller without hesitation!

5 out of 5 stars Sheds Light.......2007-08-11

Bertsekas has truly been a savior in helping me integrate the concepts of probability. I tried most of the standard intro books before finally settling in with this comforting and rewarding book. The list included: Pittman, Ross, and Hoel. None of these books were effective in solidifying the concepts in my opinion. I think Bertsekas is also an excellent choice for brushing up for an actuary exam or self-study.

5 out of 5 stars A good introduction!.......2007-02-20

First all, everyone wishing to learn probability comes from different background, math level, and motivation. There is no book that suits all. Recently I needed to know something about moment generating functions. With all my advanced engineering background though, I find it difficult to get into probability.

So I bought the following supposedly introductory texts: Ross, DeGroot, Stirzaker, Bersekas & Tsitsiklis. To me, Ross seems like a review lesson to cram for finals; it's choke full of examples but fairly spare in exposition. DeGroot is the opposite, long on descriptions but short on examples; by the time it finishes describing the problem, you have forgotten how to solve it. Probability is set up more as a prelude to statistics in the second half of the book. Stirzaker calls his book "elementary" the way Sherlock Holmes dismissed a case after slogging all night through the English bogs. It is more for the well-drilled boys from elite British "public" (private actually) schools. Bersekas comes closest to what I look for in a text, straightforward in prose with a judicious selection of examples to explain theory.

For beginners, the best approach I found, in the end, was to go the local community college and buy the text used for Finite Math. Usually, there are 3 to 4 chapters that introduce probability.

Such a text is aimed an audience from wider academic and language backgrounds, as community colleges are mandated to do. Therefore, probability is taught in simple, plain-spoken language crafted through multiple editions. One such is Finite Math, by Karl J. Smith; however, many others like it will do. For self-study, one might start in the chapter on probability to understand the author's approach, then go back a chapter or two to pick up the permutation and combinatorial math needed to calculate probability. Another alternative is just to enroll in a Finite Math course at a community college. Generally, such a course stops at Markov's chain which is enough to get you jump started in probability.

In any case, a good Finite Math text gives plenty of examples with clear, succinct, and layman-like explanation to help you tackle Ross' book or supplement any other at a higher level. If you plan to apply probability to your work, then shop around for another text after you get the basics. The thicker tomes delve more into theory which is good because real life problems are seldom like the examples given. However you can't go wrong by planting your feet solidly on a good Finite Math text first.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-07-15

I found this book a very readable, concise and useful introduction to probability.
Designed with application in mind, it emphasizes intuitive understanding and doesn't contain any boring formalism.
The only regret that I have is that avoidance of matrix calculus leads to lack of some
results, notably in markov chains (anyway this subject is well covered).
I strongly recommend this book to anyone looking for a fundamental text on applied probability.

5 out of 5 stars Great Intro to Probability.......2006-03-18

I am a university student taking a probability course and found this book to be invaluable.

The book actually assigned to our class was Sheldon Ross' A First Course in Probability. I found Ross' book unreadable so I began looking for another text in order to help myself pass the class.

After reading numerous reviews I decided on an Introduction to Probability. The book is well written and easy to understand. The main points are highlighted and made extremely obvious. In addition they are backed by step by step easy to understand examples. Another feature I found very helpful was the use of graphical examples to reinforce the points being made.

In short I would recommend this book highly to anyone looking for an introduction to probability.

Update: I finished my probability course in May with an A. I completely stopped using Ross' book around the time of this review. This book was by far the most useful tool I had. I strongly back my original recommendation. I will be graduating this fall, and this book has turned out to be one of the best mathematic books I have encountered thus far.

I say this for the following reasons. First, the layout of the book, and the order it presented material is very intuitive and helpful. Second is how well the book reads. My experience with quite a few mathematics books has been the following. The math books are written by mathematicians. While being a mathematician may qualify you to teach a subject, it does not generally translate into an ability to put your ideas into written form. The result is a book that is not read by the students, but instead only consulted when all other methods of information retrieval fail. Introduction to Probability does not share this fate. The writing style of the book is very straight forward and easy to understand. While this may sound redundant, I personally think this is one of the best reasons to buy this book.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A must have if you start with IMS.......2007-07-11

Possibly the best technical book I've ever read.

I work with IMS technology and we use the book in our department to introduce IMS to newcomers. But I also work in European projects on IMS and the book is the main reference for most of the other teams involved.

You just need this book and the 3GPP specifications for anything you want to do with IMS.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good Book.......2006-11-18

This is a very good book on SIP-based Internet Multimedia Subsystem. The book nicely depicts both the Internet and the IMS architecture implementation of SIP, AAA, VoIP centric security and policy, QoS, presence service, media encoding and transport, and instant messaging. By reviewing this book, a reader will acquire comprehensive knowledge of emerging VoIP and Video Telephony Layer 5 architecture in wireless network. The book can be used as a senior or master-level text book, a useful review guide for the provider engineers, architects, technology strategist, product managers, and technical managers. SIP programmers, implementers, and standard engineers may find the book "not detailed enough". Since technology described in this book and their standards are rapidly changing, authors need to keep the book regularly updated.

Sohel Khan, Principal Technology Strategist, Sprint-Nextel

3 out of 5 stars A mixed bag.......2006-08-23

This book intends to be the de facto handbook for IMS, but it ends up being mostly reference material.

While it has some fairly detailed descriptions of the standards and protocols involved, it does not go beyond the specifications already publicly available, or the methods that some vendors already use. Some chapters read like a translation of technical drafts, while others concerning less defined areas are very high level.

The authors, while doing a good job assembling useful information, probably set out to write this book too early, when IMS was still only a reference framework, without widespread service provider adoption. Furthermore, the corresponding expertise across the industry is missing, thus making this a less elaborate view on the services that IMS would provide, compared to what the book's subtitle would suggest.

If you need a book on IMS right now, and are not happy with the abundance of online materials, buy this book. If you are looking for a comprehensive guide on what IMS means for providers and customers, I personally have not read such a book yet - but even if it has not been released, it is only a matter of time. Keep your eyes peeled for snippets of information coming out of service providers and infrastructure vendors, and for the ongoing debates in the industry around the evolution of the service delivery platform.

4 out of 5 stars Good book but bad index..........2006-02-23

The book is good, expensive but good.
However I'm very disappointed about the index (the alphabetical word list place at the end of the book). Lots of important key words are not listed in the index, which makes the reading difficult. Camarillo, please improve the index!!!

I've also noticed some mis-writings , spelling errors (not mayor issues)

Of course a basic background in telecommunications is needed in order to follow the book, if you do not have that basic knowledge then I do recommend to have the books "Understanding Telecommunications 1 and 2" (Ericsson) by the side when reading Camarillo's book.

4 out of 5 stars IMS - Revealed From the Inside.......2005-10-03

The 3G IMS book provides a look at IMS organization and SIP signaling from one of the people who were there while the protocols were being established. Since this is an emerging and still developing technology, the little insights like "this is what we intended to do here", and "this is where we want this eventually to go" will be emminently helpful in choosing equipment and network organizations.

I have to describe to customers how they might use IMS equipment and integratit into their networks. While this is no engineering level document, it is solid at describing the interfaces they will have to support. I think they will be assured by the information I now have to give them.

This is a bit pricey and the editing a bit sloppy, but then I find that the rule rather than exception with a lot of the inside information manuals.

This will be of great use and I hope it will arm me to be able to comfort customers that this architecture just might work.

Book Description

In 2002 voice over IP will constitute more than 25% of all long distance voice calls, according to Network World. That’s more than a 30% ramp-up from 2001. The emergence of SIP, MPLS and new quality of service tools is making carrier grade voice over IP a service reality, and a potentially huge margin booster and revenue driver for service providers. The first edition of Carrier Grade Voice over IP played a roll in VoIP growth, in less than year becoming an essential tool for carriers working to provide high quality IP telephony. This new edition vastly updates the SIP chapter, details MPLS, and takes the explanations of the previous edition a step further in a final chapter that shows, step by step, how to design working VoIP networks.

Download Description

A must-have, practical primer on true "carrier class" VoIP--how to use cutting-edge signaling schemes, quality of service (QoS) techniques, and existing protocols to deliver Ma Bell-quality service.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent intro to VoIP.......2005-08-06

This book does a very good job of giving an introduction to the VoIP world. As a professional in the telecom domain, I found this book very useful. Application of VoIP to telco domain as in the case of softswitch architecture for backhaul and the QoS issues that carriers have to deal with is also well covered at a good amount of detail. The book also provides detailed discussion on the protocols. However, I skipped passed these sections and unable to comment if such material was covered well.

Overall - a very good book. Highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Useful reference.......2002-01-22

I serious think that I should not write this review since I do not understand half of this book, but then again, I have read this and also Cisco Intergrated Voice Data and can in some way be a poor/insufficient abeit enthusastic tour guide. I have noticed other reviewers describing this book as great - but I do not think this book is comparable to monumental classic like Jeff Doyle or Kennedy Clarks books on Routing and Switching - where they display in-depth knowledge on the topic plus an ability to explain thing in the clearest possible way. I rate this book 5 stars for the sole reason that the author do appear to have an overwhelming knowledge of computer telephony - although I cannot quite judge whether they are technically accurate or error free - and has taken his valueable time off to write them down and share with us. While the author definitely has the kindest intention of making it "understanable" to even the not-so-technically-advance group of reader - as is evidenced in the way he start off this book by explaining why bother with IP telephony, and why TCP/IP is inherently unsuitable for IP telephony - I suspect that when it come to harder topics like H.323, SIP etc - there is simply no way or no time to find a more reader friendly way to present it. In the end it is a tough read - so tough that I will have to put it aside for a while as you need to be in the highest state or mental agility and strength to make hard yakka through the book. Nevertheless, this book is a useful reference - and for topics that this author decide not to include - check out Cisco's Integrated Voice and Data.

5 out of 5 stars Very much self contained.......2001-02-10

Great book on VoIP, still emerging technology. It did a great job in explaining concepts related to QoS such as RSVP, DiffServ and MPLS. Right from basics such as IP, UDP, TCP and various coding techniques you will find great explanation to each and every item. If you are interested in knowing about VoIP or you if u wanna work on VoIP this is the ONLY book you need. There is very detailed and neat explanation related to MGCP, MEGACO, SS7 and SIP too. The only thing that i felt lacking is testing of voice quality both subjective and objective and how they could be done. No doubt in giving 5 *s to it, great job!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2001-01-09

Aimed specifically at designers of public telecommunications networks, this easy to read book provides practical and useful hands-on information. Where necessary, topics are covered in great detail. For example, 120 pages are dedicated to H.323. Softswitch architecture and programming are covered, and 55 pages are devoted to discussing Quality of Service issues.

We believe this book to be an essential read, and recommend it highly.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT READING.......2001-01-05

Collin's book provides a simple straight forward review of Voice over IP. If you need to understand SIP, H.323, Megaco, or Softswitches this book is a must.

5 out of 5 stars Behind the Scenes of Media Programming.......2006-01-28

This is a very solid job at describing a constantly moving target. The authors (the first and third are at California State University-Fullerton, while Brian Gross teaches out in Jakarta and has enjoyed extensive experience in all three media) help to bring ever more important Internet content into the media mainstream with their treatment. Chapters cover the history of programming in all three services (and related areas such as video games), sources of television programming, sources of radio and Internet content, development of content for each of the three, testing of audience reactions, elements of successful programming, factors influencing television programming, factors impacting radio and Internet content, scheduling strategies for each of these services, program evaluation, changing and canceling programs, and ethical issues. The book is more descriptive than critical in approach, and helps readers get behind the scenes to better understand the players and process.

4 out of 5 stars Using the free software on internet sites to help your research.......2007-03-14

The first chapter is a short review of DNA and RNA sequences, amino acids, and protein. The other chapters teach you to use the free software found on the Internet to work with your research. Information is also given which helps explain some biochemicals. My skills are in Software Development using C++ language, and I need more information on biochemicals to understand the problems and to develop algorithms to solve them.
My only criticism is that I would like the book to give more biochemical theory before taking up the subject of Internet software.
Overall, this is a good beginner's book on biochemistry.

    5 out of 5 stars Good.......2007-02-16

I am a couple years into a PhD in bioinformatics, but this is the book I started with. I knew some biology and some computer science, but I still found a lot of the databases, etc. confusing and the field has a decided lack of simplified documentation (though it is getting better).

Of course, bioinformatics is a pretty broad topic and no book could possibly cover everything.

If you do not know any biology at all you probably should also get a basic text on genetics/molecular biology (or read thema at the NCBI web site books section for free). You don't need anything in depth to read the dummies book, just at the level of an introductory biology book. Hint: DNA to RNA, RNA to Protein. And you want to know why proteins are similar because proteins with similar amino acid sequences often have similar chemical properties and therefore similar functions, so if you know what one protein does you can guess what a protein like it probably does.
    :-)

And despite the name of the book the authors are REAL bioinformaticists (T-Coffee rocks!)

5 out of 5 stars Yes, It's Really Written at the For Dummies Level........2007-01-18

This book kind of blew me away. Bioinformatics is such a big word.

Then in the second chapter they tell you 'How Most People Use Bioinformatics.' And all of a sudden they have you on line to the National Library of Medicine at the National Institute of Health. They have you looking at protein sequences, and you even understand what they are saying.

This is a 'For Dummies' book. It is written in their traditional style, assuming that you know very little -- well to be sure they say they are making the assumption that 'You likely have a background in molecular biology. If you don't - or if you need to brush up on your molecular biology - Chapter 1 gives you a brief overview of the basics.'

I found that the first few chapters went down pretty easily. By part IV it had gone further than I wanted to go, and I quit reading.

BUT if I were going to be taking a course in bioinformatics, or even thinking about taking such a course, or just looking at a degree in biology, I'd spend a week or two getting around this book. It's written a hell of a lot better than any text you're likely to get assigned, and at its price it's quite a deal.

5 out of 5 stars Great introductory text.......2006-09-20

This is an excellent introduction to Bioinformatics. It does assume some very basic knowledge of biology- perhaps a couple of paragraphs could help the total newbies.

Have you noticed that reviews of bioinformatics books tend to follow certain patterns? The Computer Scientists and mathematicians complain that there is not enough detail about the algorithms, the biologists complain that they could not get through the math, and everyone complains that there is not enough detail about their favorite programs! Let us face the fact that this is a very broad field, and most people that want to learn about it will never design algorithms.

    5 out of 5 stars great beginner.......2005-12-16

In spite of the title (I don't know many dummies interested in multiple sequence alignments) this reference is written by experts in the field of bioinformatics and is very accessable for the beginner. I purchased this book as a beginning graduate student so that I could learn which programs to use to compare amino acid and nucleic acid sequences as well as prepare them for publication and this book was perfect for this end. This text doesn't delve into the algorithms or much theory (which is learned through practice and other sources), nevertheless, I recommend this for the researcher for a crash course or quick reference. This book really helped me get my feet wet in this area (and recently publish a nice alignment) and will certainly reduce my workload next semester for my bioinformatics course!
