Mac users beware.......2007-10-07
One of the reasons that I was so interested in this particular book for MAT review is that it came with a CD-ROM of pracitce tests. However, what was not clear before ordering was that the CD-ROM is not compatible with Mac computers and will not work. If you use a Mac, the CD is useless to you, so keep that in mind. I was really disappoined.
Excellent book for reviewing for the MAT.......2007-01-04
I purchased this book to prepare to take the MAT so I can get admitted to graduate school. The book went above my expectations. As a result of scoring very well on the MAT, I was able to get accepted into the graduate scool of my choice.
Test Prep.......2006-08-14
I found this book very helpful while studying for the MAT. The CD with the practice test are extremely valuable when studying, and really help to get a great over view of test material. These practice test are very simular to the real MAT. If you are able to score well on these practice test then the real MAT should be no problem.
Book Description
The history of Alaska is filled with stories of new land and new riches -- and ever present are new people with competing views over how these resources should be used: Russians exploiting a fur empire; explorers checking rival advances; prospectors stampeding to the clarion call of "Gold!"; soldiers battling out a decisive chapter in world war; oil wildcatters looking for a different kind of mineral wealth; and always at the core of these disputes is the question of how the land is to be used and by whom.
Major themes include Alaska Natives, exploration and mountaineering, mining rushes, railroads and aviation, military operations, and the conflict pitting conservation against development, with a spotlight on the current debate over oil drilling in ANWR.
Some want Alaska to remain static, others are in the vanguard of change. Alaska: Saga of a Bold Land shows that there are no easy answers on either side and that Alaska will always be crossing the next frontier.

Accidentally bought it, but kept it on purpose.......2007-08-09
Walter R. Borneman tells the interesting social and political history of Alaska, from the Native peoples through the Russian occupation and the sale to the United States down to the present day. The last 100 years or so is covered in greater detail than much of the time prior, but this is still the most comprehensive book about Alaska that I could find. Given the large size of Alaska there is a lot of ground covered in this book from mountaineering and those who surveyed and climbed the peaks to the gold rush and oil boom to the exploitation of sea otters and salmon and the overall exploration of the land. I have had an interest in learning more about Alaska for about a year now, and all I could find in my local library was Michener's immense and sometimes dense "Alaska," which is, of course, historical fiction. It was helpful and covered in detail what might be called the "eras" of Alaska's history, but the fact that it was fiction made it confusing when trying to learn the real history. Nonetheless, it provided a good basis and context. But Borneman's great book gives the real history and names without lumping so much history together, and it does so in a very readable and entertaining way. I had checked out this book from the library but accidentally ordered it from Amazon through "one-click" ordering. Amazon graciously offered to take it back, but I've enjoyed the book so much that it was an easy decision to keep it. It's helped me to gain a much better understanding of the area (but if you're especially familiar with the Juneau area and don't mind sharing your knowledge, please send me an e-mail).
Alaska: Saga of a Bold Land.......2007-05-12
This a well written history of our 49 state. Anyone interested in the history of Alaska will find this book interesting.
Alaska: Saga of a Bold Land.......2005-08-29
This book contains very detailed info. After traveling to Alaska and taking some 400 photos, this book has helped me put together a more detailed narrative to go along with the photos.
Get weaker as the history moves on............2005-06-11
I thought this book does an excellent job of relating Alaskan history prior to statehood. The impact of Russian America and World War II proves to be well written. After statehood, it seem like only thing that went on in Alaska were related to oil, native land claims and 1964 Earthquake. There were whole lot more that took place in this state during the last 45 years that the book covered. Unfortunately, the author seem to be enamoured with the big headlines subjects in the post statehood period.
A thick book but its quite readable. For people living outside Alaska, this would be an excellent introduction to the Alaska's history. For the local folks like me, first half of the book remains interesting while the latter half appears to be rehashed of newspaper material. It may have been wise if the author stop at statehood and then wrote a second volume since he seem to have a decent flair for writing.
Readable history of Alaska.......2004-03-20
Borneman presents an exceptional overview of the history of Alaska which isn't mired in the minutiae of detail that many historians feel necessary to disclose. Because of this, he keeps the pace pretty quick. There is an excellent bibliography in the back of the book for those interested in studying the subject in more detail, but Borneman presents a lot of history in these pages. I faulted the book on the maps, which are small and therefore not very detailed. Most readers might not find this too much of a problem, but I like to follow along the trail, so to speak, with the author.

Worth the time and money.......2006-08-29
In all honesty, I researched on Amazon about the best MAT book, then got in a hurry and bought whatever the local book store had, which is this one. I highly doubt there is a bad MAT study guide out there.
That said, I can hardly imagine any MAT book is better than this one. Before I mention the book, I will mention I am nearly 40, and did not fair well in high school as a student. Many of the MAT subjects have info from the things we all learned (or should have) as a young person. So, I was very nervous to take the test. But I scored at the 60th percentile (raw score 411); most grad schools want you near the 50th so I was happy (yes I know many people brag about scoring in the 90th percentile in these reviews and that's great, but I just wanted to get in a good school, not win any awards).
The book has an 8-week schedule you can follow. I actually took 9. Each week you take one of 8 practice tests, review in detail that answers of each question, then the authors recommend specific studying in the book. It covers too many subjects to mention here. One thing I did though is make 3 x 5 cards of the vocabulary and word prefixes/roots/suffixes. I also printed from the web countries and capitals, world currencies, states and capitals, oceans-lakes-mountains, etc. etc. etc.
This is a big job to do all of this studying but worth it to get into a reputable school. Unsure of a school? Go to Google and search for "America's Best Colleges 2007" and click on national universities. With a degree from one of these top 120 schools, employers are very likely to have heard of them and give you a real edge. Personally, I chose Pepperdine's EdD (doctorate of Education) program. Don't know if I will be accepted but at least a have a respectable MAT score and whoever you are, you can earn one as well.
Follow the book's schedule, study practically every day for 8 weeks, and go for it!
Good luck! Great book.
REA review.......2005-01-31
Good book, the history section is too detailed, be sure to know the vocabulary lists thoroughly, they are easy points. The exam is tough but do not panic the results are usually better than you would think.
It helped me a good bit.......2003-11-09
Well, I bought this book to study for the test. It was the only book I bought. I scored in the 89th percentile, and I know I would not have done as well if I didn't have this book. Whether I would have done better had I used another book will always be a mystery.
Use something else!!.......2002-10-24
I just took the MAT and now I feel like I wasted a lot of time with this book. It sets you up to think you need to cram a lot of high school-esque facts (history, geography, philosophy, music, bla bla) into your head. Which I did, for two weeks. Then I take the test and it seemed to me to be alot of word play type questions, like SLEEP:PEEL::LOOP: and the answer is SLOOP. The REA review didn't have any questions like that in their practice tests, and it's hard to sit there during the test thinking "word jumbles??" and try to get your brain in that track. There were maybe 10 questions that my studying was useful for. I think any other book (and I admit, it was stupid to rely solely on one book!) would have been more useful and on target than this one.
Worth getting if..........2000-05-06
With eight tests and next to no strategy, this book is ideal for a "disaster check" before you take the test--provided you use it as a supplement to other study guides.
Book Description
On a fateful day in 1889, the Oklahoma land rush begins, and for thousands of settlers the future is up for grabs. One of those people is Creed McReynolds, fresh from the East with a lawyer's education and a head full of aspirations. The mixed-blood son of a Kiowa mother and a U.S. Cavalry doctor, Creed lands in Guthrie station, the designated Territorial Capital, where he must prove that he is more than the half-blood kid once driven from his own land.
In recounting the precipitous rise and catastrophic fall of the jerrybuilt city of Guthrie, author Sheldon Russell immerses us in the lives of Creed and other memorable characters whose ambitions echo the taming of the frontier--and whose fates hold lessons as important today as they were more than a hundred years ago.
Among the people McReynolds must contend with is Abaddon Damon. A ruthless newspaper publisher, Abaddon is quick to strike any bargain that will bring him the power he craves, and like many others, Creed McReynolds is swept into his whirlwind of greed and deception. Creed becomes the wealthiest man in the Territory--but at an unbearable cost to himself, the dreams of others, and the dignity of his mother's people.
Dreams to Dust takes readers back to the early days of Oklahoma Territory--a sometimes dangerous place filled with nefarious dealings, where violence lurks behind even casual encounters--to tell the story of frontier men and women gambling everything to find their fortune on the windswept southern plains.

Sheldon Russell's best book yet........2007-09-11
Hard to believe the same guy who wrote "Empire" wrote "Dreams to Dust" what a vast improvement on story telling. Dreams to Dust is a great historical fiction that centers around the founding of Guthrie Station, OK. The characters are diverse and well developed. This was a fun book to read.
great book on the history of oklahoma.......2006-07-13
this is a great book, it is very interesting and seems to be fairly accurate to what might have happened in the life just after the land run.

BOOK REVIEW BY CAROLYN BRANCH LEONARD 2/10/2006
Standing at the foot of Mavis's grave, Jerome held his hat in his hands.
"You danced your dance," he whispered, "and left your memory burned in my soul. Now, I will dance mine, and leave my mark upon this land."
This quote from Dreams to Dust, by Sheldon Russell, represents the author's profound understanding of the birth of Oklahoma by land run in 1889, and his brilliant gift for capturing the dramatic events and violent conflict that shaped the legends of our epic West. Dreams to Dust is a rip-roaring tale of the history, land and people of a city born grown in one day - a day of chaos, unique adventure, risk and total confusion. The author knows his subject well, researched it thoroughly and told his story faithfully in a writing style unique to him ...and what an exciting story he has to tell. Dreams to Dust presents many facts revealed in fictional format, such as the station that becomes Guthrie - the first state capitol, abandoned as result of one frontier newspaperman's greed, with the capitol seal stolen away in the dark of night.
Not since James Michener's Centennial has history been told in such a spellbinding way. From the opening line when Creed McReynolds locks his legs against the inside of a rail car, I felt relentlessly carried along on his journey and unable to get off the train until turning the final pages in the wee small hours of morning.
McReynolds, half-breed son of a U.S. Cavalry doctor, becomes just one of an assortment of powerful, unforgettable characters; like the girl with sapphire eyes, or the French architect who designed beautiful buildings of stone, the dog they called Flea Bag, hard-scrabble entrepreneurs who became tycoons, and an orphan boy forced to grow up too soon.
The author speaks in language of the time, through the voices of homesteaders, sooners, cowboys, claim jumpers, soldiers, railroad bulls, mail-order wives, opportunists and common thieves, steadfast men, women and children who come to build their homes and seek their fortunes on former Indian lands. The three million acres of the `89ers are outside the authority of Indian government, and without civil law. Nothing is spared: danger, brutality, hunger, sudden death, the loss of youth and innocence, prejudice, natural disasters, promiscuous women, even the unselfish friendship and love that McReynolds unexpectedly finds in this barren land.
But what comes through strongest is the idea that each man and woman has an innate dream to possess land and prosper on it; a compulsion capable of redeeming a soul or destroying a life. We are subtly reminded that this land - which McReynolds fights so hard to claim - originally was given in peace treaties to his mother's people by the US government.
Even the closing graphs present a ripping good read with a hint of Hemingway:
"As he climbed from the meadow, the air smelled scrubbed and clean, and a soft breeze blew through the trees. At the dugout he stopped, laying his hand on the door, listening to the sounds of the mountain. It was here that he and Alida had been the happiest, had built traps and laughed about hoopers, had made love and planned their future."
.....But no matter what the future held, this much he knew: this land was where he belonged; this land was where he'd stay.
Book Description
I have heard of a land
Where the imagination has no fences
Where what is dreamed one night
Is accomplished the next day
In the late 1880s, signs went up all around America - land was free in the Oklahoma territory. And it was free to everyone: Whites, Blacks, men and women alike. All one needed to stake a claim was hope and courage, strength and perseverance. Thousands of pioneers, many of them African-Americans newly freed from slavery, headed west to carve out a new life in the Oklahoma soil.
Drawing upon her own family history, National Book Award winner Joyce Carol Thomas has crafted an unforgettable anthem to these brave and determned people from America's past. Richly illustrated by Coretta Scott King Award honoree Floyd Cooper, I Have Heard of a Land is a glorious tribute to the Afrian-American pioneer spirit.

Book Description
Serving on every major fighting front of World War 2, America's infantrymen proved themselves adaptable, resilient and steadfast in their determination to overthrow the Axis forces. In the Pacific, Mediterranean and European theatres of war, GIs tackled unfamiliar terrain, hostile climates, and unpredictable local conditions. This book examines the typical experiences of a single soldier fighting in each geographic region, and in doing so, illuminates a larger picture of a nation's experience of one of history's most cataclysmic conflicts. Text and images previously published in Warriors 45, 53 and 56 are combined with brand new material focusing on the Southwest Pacific region in this great value special edition.
Book Description
On September 16, 1893, over 100,000 people converged on the edges of six million acres just south of the Kansas border, a parcel officially designated the Cherokee Outlet but more commonly called the Cherokee Strip. This was the largest of the rushes, where officials threw open whole parcels of land at one time. The opening of the outlet drew people with a wide mix of motivations. Those who arrived that stifling September found heat, dust, wretched conditions, high pricesand hope. Among them was William Prettyman, whose photographs remain the most stirring record of the event. When the starting gun went off at noon, the blurred images of people and animals racing across the dusty terrain became part of the memory of a whole region.

Good photos, sparse information.......2007-02-25
The photos are very interesting and of good quality. However, if you are searching for a detailed account of the 1893 Land Rush be forewarned that this book gives only a very brief overview.
