5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Overview and well documented.......2005-11-11

Superb read, I especially like the 2 chapter Wireless Network overview and the Wirelesee Value for explaining complex issues in a straightforward manner. This book brings you up to speed on the industry, business value and corporate interest in the mobility space. A must buy!!

3 out of 5 stars Good first few chapters.......2005-09-26

My objective was to gain a better understanding of the potential business value of wireless mobility. I am in Sales and new to the wireless mobility space. The technology primer chapters were pretty good with the exception of some Microsoft bias (one of the authors is a Microsoft employee). The book proceeded to go into CGE&Y's approach to gaining business value. Perhaps this book is better suited to an executive who is grappling with understanding how to quantify the value and is interested in purchasing CGE&Y's approach. I did not care for the bias.

5 out of 5 stars Easy Read!!!.......2005-07-22

I enjoyed this book very much. Having a technology background, I knew about this topic before I read the book but I did a learn some new things. It's also a good tool to learn how to explain mobile technologies in simple terms to non-techies and business people. Easy and quick read!!!

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, Must-Have Guide to Mobile Technologies.......2005-01-17

This book is super informative, nicely written, and easy to understand. I would recommend it highly to large enterprises interested in mobile technologies and to individuals who are interested in learning more about the burgeoning filed of mobile computing. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read.......2005-01-15

This book is an excellent insight into Mobility and Wireless. Good for both newcomers and those inside the industry, I look forward to the next one from these authors.

Suitable for the IT manager or developer who wants to get the "big picture" surrounding mobile commerce (m-commerce) of the present and near future, Paul May's Mobile Commerce: Opportunities, Applications, and Technologies of Wireless Business provides a smart, business-savvy guide to what's on the horizon with the wireless Web.

This book provides a good mix of enthusiasm tempered with realism about what mobile commerce will mean for all types of business. After outlining the rise of mobile phones across the world, the author delves into what types of m-commerce applications will potentially thrive. From travel and electronic ticketing to gambling and games, the author outlines a promising vision for the future, illustrated with current online ventures (often from Europe and the U.K.). As this book went to press last year, there are a few anachronisms after the dot-com fallout. (While Webvan, for example, is no longer an example of successful e-commerce, the force of the argument here for m-commerce is still quite convincing.)

Later on, the author discusses the infrastructure of mobile commerce, including the differences between traditional and mobile networks. Next comes a full tour of today's mobile devices, from phones and PDAs to smart cards and even wireless devices for cars (which are a prime market for new m-commerce applications). There's also a quick tour of WAP and WML for creating wireless user interfaces. This technical material is suitable for IT managers and even developers new to the world of wireless. The book concludes with some predictions about how the move to wireless will impact society, along with some issues that may help or hinder its adoption.

All in all, this title provides a good introduction to the new possibilities of wireless, one with a nicely worldwide perspective. As North American companies get onboard with mobile commerce, this guide to how m-commerce has been implemented in Europe and Asia can benefit any decision maker or planner with some good ideas, along with providing some intelligent predictions about how m-commerce might change the ways companies do business in the very near future. --Richard Dragan

Topics covered: The emerging mobile device market (trends and predictions, market drivers); business opportunities for mobile commerce (m-commerce); moving beyond e-commerce into m-commerce; customer relationships; mobile services described (including e-mail and messaging, location finding, and digital content products); consumer m-commerce (travel, ticketing, banking, stocks, gambling, games, and shopping); business m-commerce (mobile markets, collaboration and better management through m-commerce); m-commerce network technologies; global, local, and personal networks; cellular networks and standards described; third-generation (3G) networks; types of mobile devices (including phones, pagers, PDAs, smart cards, and cards); overview of WAP and WML; XML and mobile content; payment systems and security issues; societal issues surrounding m-commerce (including privacy, health, access, geography, obsolescence, and cost per customer); and reference to m-commerce resources.

Book Description

This book provides the context, architectures, case studies, and intelligent analysis that will help the reader grasp the rapidly evolving subject of mobile commerce. May explains the technological aspects of mobile commerce to business decision makers and the business models to the technologists who design and build these electronic systems. It is the one book all relevant parties in a company can read to ensure common understanding. Topics include devices, technologies, applications, standards, security, and more.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A great starting point.......2001-09-17

This is a broad treatment of M-commerce and is aimed at a broad audience of business and technical readers. Usually books of this nature are mediocre because of the trade-offs compromises in scope and content that need to be made to accommodate a wide audience. In the case of the book, though, it isn't the case.

First, the book is organized by (1) Business opportunity, (2) Applications, (3) Technology, (4) Issues and (5) Directory of M-Commerce Applications. The first four sections are both insightful and invaluable. The directory of M-commerce applications, in my opinion, does not add any value to the book because information of this nature changes so rapidly that it's inaccurate before a book is even published.

What I like about the book is the even treatment of opportunities that are inherent in M-commerce, including some insights into why Europe does not have the advantages that normally come from being early adopters (in spite of the pessimists who cite a "two year head start" while ignoring the U.S. leadership in technology implementation when we do get around to it), and the interesting view of WAP (Wireless Application Protocol), which many believe to be just an interim - the author advises to put resources and effort into WAP and make it part of a business strategy if you want to be an M-commerce player.

The survey of technologies and standards are also useful, even if given somewhat superficial treatment. The value is you are exposed to all of the factors and considerations with which to make informed decisions or gain an understanding of the M-commerce landscape. In this respect the applications and technology sections of the book can be viewed as a primer.

Overall, this is an excellent book for learning about M-commerce from business and technical points of view because it provides a context and keen insights in both domains.

5 out of 5 stars Great unbiased information.......2005-09-26

I am part of an enteprise sales team and new to the wireless mobility space. I was looking for a good book to bring me up to speed on what our customers are thinking and to find where the business value is. This book is a great unbiased primer IMHO.

5 out of 5 stars ENVISIONING THE FUTURE.......2005-07-24

Envision a world where cell phones are everywhere, turning our civilization into an always-available, anytime, anywhere communicators. This is the world of mobility that is coming of age. Authors Keri Hayes and Susan Kuchinskas have done an outstanding job of presenting this wonderful technology at our doorstep.

Hayes and Kuchinskas begin by mapping the decision process necessary to proceed from developing a strategic vision for mobile data in the enterprise down to tactical questions such as what kinds of vendors to work with. Next, the authors offer a market-focused view of wireless, broken into the categories of mobile/wireless implementations. Within each category, they provide an overview explaining how a particular service is being used by various industries, and how an industry is leading the way in using mobile or wireless applications. Then, the authors provide relevant case studies that demonstrate how a particular company or agency has saved time, money, or labor by implementing the project.

With the preceding in mind, the authors do an excellent job of making you, the reader, understand the vocabulary and concepts of the mobile milieu. You'll know whether mobile is right for your company and whether it's right, right now. If you do decide to move forward, you'll be armed with a battle plan that will help you become your company's mobile hero.

4 out of 5 stars A good introduction for today.......2003-10-14

Too often technology is the tail that wags the dog, and this now can be clearly seen in mobile technology. The authors work to bring together an introduction and discussion of the different flavors of mobile applications. But first, they bring you through the discussion "Are mobile applications right for my organization?" and talk about the pros and cons of the technology. And do you need always on connections or can you sync your data? Then if you say "yes" they start to walk through the technologies, capacities and problems. But it's one thing to talk about the facts, the implementation is another thing. And here the book liberally includes case studies for the technology in action. While they are great, and illuminating, I wish there were a couple of failures in the lot instead of uniformly positive studies.

One aspect I particularly appreciated was the breadth of uses of mobile applications presented. Initially it seemed to focus on the sales and service forces almost exclusively, but as we moved into other technologies and case studies, a well rounded picture began to emerge as to how going mobile can be useful in many enterprises. This book is a good primer and introduction to where this technology stands. It is especially good for the decision maker to understand the truth and fallacy of the technology in order to make more informed decisions. Worth the read in this fast paced world.

Book Description

Recently, the emergence of wireless and mobile networks has made possible the admission of electronic commerce to a new application and research subject: mobile commerce, defined as the exchange or buying and selling of commodities, services, or information on the Internet through the use of mobile handheld devices. In just a few years, mobile commerce has emerged from nowhere to become the hottest new trend in business transactions. However, the prosperity and popularity of mobile commerce will be brought to a higher level only if information is securely and safely exchanged among end systems (mobile users and content providers). Advances in Security and Payment Methods for Mobile Commerce includes high-quality research papers and industrial and practice articles in the areas of mobile commerce security and payment from academics and industrialists. It covers research and development results of lasting significance in the theory, design, implementation, analysis, and application of mobile commerce security and payment.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars study the chapters on fraud.......2005-11-28

If mobile commerce is to take off, many issues of micropayments and antifraud need to be addressed. Hu edited this collection of papers which addresses these and other issues. These give a timely discussion about what might be the most pertinent topics facing hardware and software vendors wanting to deploy an application.

Overwhelmingly, the mobile commerce platform appears to be the cellphone, given the sheer prevalence, as compared to PDAs or mobile laptops.

The chapters on possible types of fraud attacks and what countermeasures could be implemented might be the most important sections of the book. As with other types of electronic interactions, like email and web browsing, fraud is likely to surface as a peril if mobile commerce becomes pervasive.

        Book Description

The new capabilities of ubiquitous and pervasive computing imply that products, locations, consumers and employees create rich streams of information about themselves, their immediate environment and their use. This book brings together technological and business aspects of conducting commerce using ubiquitous and pervasive computing techniques and also examines its implications for society at large. Individual chapters examine in detail the core technologies that make ubiquitous computing possible, the business standards that must be established to support the envisioned global infrastructures, and the applications in the supply chain and for consumers that can be built today. They also examine business cases where investment in this technology is appropriate as well as the economics mechanisms that must be designed for the effective use of such systems. The implications of ubiquitous and pervasive commerce for the legal system, for employees of retailers and for privacy protection of the public at large are also discussed.
