It's a toughie........2005-12-08
This is the text book that was assigned to my class, and I am taking an at-home course. I don't know if these guys are covering everything or not, but I can tell you this: they sure don't know how to write clearly. Sentences are long-winded and convoluted. I read each sentence over and over just trying to figure it out. I am taking notes by re-writing every paragraph. Appraisal school is difficult enough without having to decipher and translate the textbook into plain English. Today's example:
"The amount of the expected annual 'effective gross income' from the property, estimated by subtracting aniticipated vacancy and collection losses from potential gross income".
I translated that to:
"Effective Gross income equals potential gross income minus (anticipated vacancy + collection losses)."
It makes for very tedious studying.
Great book for new appraisers.......2005-10-10
I have been working as an appraisal apprentice for 3 months. I have read 3 different books and this is the most concise and clear.
I Used Mr. John Tirone's HP-12C Real Estate Book to.......2004-04-05
I enjoyed this real estate appraisal book. However like just about every real estate appraisal book I have seen, the Williams and Ventolo book could use better supplementation on the HP financial calculators so I used a book recommended by one of my classmates, "Professional Real Estate Problem Solving Using the HP12C" financial calculator. This book is written by a Mr. John Tirone, a real estate instructor and attorney from Michigan. I heard that Mr. Tirone supports his books but I was skeptical until we called him with questions on using the hp12C in some of the real estate appraisal problems experienced in our class that used the Williams book.
If your appraisal course requires the William and Ventolo book, try to get a used copy from amazon since theer are lots of these books in the system. If you want to have extra help with the hp calculator, consider the Tirone book on the HP12C. amazon carries the book; this book is worth the money and if you need help Mr. Tirone will help you. His book is a win-win for the student of appraisal or real estate in general.
Excellent text, lousy index.......2004-02-19
This book was required reading for two different course-series I completed last year: real estate appraisal, and real estate broker. Of all the books I had to read (10 total) this was by far the best. Very well written, and it covered the subject matter very well (I wish I could say the same for the broker courses I took -- will have to re-take the state exam a second time because of that...).
One major flaw in the book though: the index is pathetic. I'm currently preparing for the state exam, and when looking to review particular words/phrases/concepts, the index is nearly useless. Was the index computer-generated by some software with a lousy algorithm?
Anyway, it's a great book for the student. But I worry that the lousy index will greatly reduce its usefulness as a reference text when I start work.
Good Start.......2003-05-27
I am a REALTOR, not an appraiser. I bought this book to give me a better understanding of how appraisers arrive at their conclusions.. to better price property or determine if a listing
I am going after will be over priced and not worth my time. As
with all books I learned things I did not know. Worth my money.
Book Description
This text focuses on presenting a balance of theory and applications and providing the student with a survey of the important areas of investments: valuation, the marketplace, fixed income instruments and markets, equity instruments and markets, derivative instruments, and a cross-section of special topics such as international markets and mutual funds.

Clarity, accuracy.......2001-08-29
After scanning this and six other similar books, I chose this one for my home study. There is an intellectual clarity in _RE Fundamentals_ that makes it stand out from the others. It has the accuracy of a scholarly work without being opaque. No marketing hype here. Nothing about how rich you are going to be. Quizzes at the end of each chapter are brief but adequate.
Good real estate primer..........2000-12-13
This is the book that is given with the pre-licence classes at the tennessee real estate education system(TREES). The class is not taught right from the book but they believe that this book is a solid primer and reference point. I agree, this book provides all the basic general information needed to pass the real estate exam anywhere and it is presented in an organized easy to read format. Also the price is very reasonable compared to other RE primers. I recommend it.

A complete waste of time and money.......2005-05-04
Reading the title and the back cover you would expect gaining some sort of marketing knowledge of the real estate industry...? This is not only badly written but also filled with irrelevant information that will really upset you if you have more brain than a block of bricks: "Drive defensively" "do not lie cheat or steal from anyone" are the recommendation given to you to reach a high level of professionalism in the real estate industry....??? This book has really poor and irrelevant content and is a complete waste of time. I consider it a dangerous tool for those out there who have no marketing or business experience as following listed marketing advices will only help you reaching the level of mediocrity that the writers seem happy to share with the world. I have not been so upset by a reading in many many years.
Book Description
Brealey, Myers, Marcus have been applauded for their intuitive approach and imbedded examples. Professors constantly praise their well-organized and thoughtful writing style and their clear exposition of what many students consider difficult material. The authors accomplish this without sacrificing an up-to-date, technically correct treatment of core topic areas. Since this author team is known for their outstanding research, teaching efforts, and market-leading finance textbooks, its no surprise that they have created an innovative modern, and market-driven revision.
Customer Reviews:
Not what I expected.......2007-04-13
This is an outline....it just has page after page after page of vocab and blank lined paper. This wasn't what I was expecting. I'm returning this ASAP. If you have the book get it. If not, get barron's or something else.
A little too detailed for beginners.......2002-12-02
The financial concepts are explained very nicely. Though it is my first finance book i can go through it without much difficulty or extra help. However there are still some drawbacks need to be noticed:
1. Need more charts and graphics to explain the concepts, ie: when explaining the DU PONT System, i think the pyramid structure can be illustrated so as to state a whole concept, not only fragments
2. Too many examples
3. This book is too detailed in both relevant and irrelevant matters
Still, I think it is a good book.
I own Principles of Corporate Finance (5th ed.).......2002-04-27
If possible, please tell me the difference between this book (Fundamentals of Corporate Finance by Richard Brealey) and Principles of Corporate Finance by Brealey and Myers. I currently own the 5th edition of Principles; having worn the book down with constant thumbing, I am looking for a replacement.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Excellent book for very beginners.......2000-07-18
I and my friends(with no business background) are studying corporate finance by ourselves using this book and all of us are very satisfied with the book so far.
The concepts are explained very clearly(even kindly) and sample tests with complete solutions are very useful. The book also has solutions for selected end-of-the chapter problems and I enjoy mini cases which help me apply the concepts to the practice in detail.
I had tried other finance books before and most of them were not clear in explaining concepts and a bit difficult for me(my major was chemistry). I think that this book is probably the easiest and the best book to begin with for starters in finance.
From zero to understanding finance concept by concept........2000-03-28
This book is excelent for understanding finance from scratch. I read the spanish translation of this book. It is not a book "for dummies". It teaches each concept at a time in a clear way.
