5 out of 5 stars Missing Manual on eBay.......2007-07-12

Great book in explaining all the aspects of safe buying and selling items on eBay!!! It has helped us enormously.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book.......2006-09-10

Best book I have read about eBay. Very comprehensive, detailed and well written. Hard work went into producing this book.
It is both for beginners and beyond.

4 out of 5 stars A good introduction, but probably due for an update.......2006-03-19

This is a great starter book for anyone curious about buying or selling on eBay. My only issue is that the book could probably use a refreshing. eBay is a very dynamic property and this book was probably written at least a year ago.

5 out of 5 stars SELL AMERICAN!!.......2006-02-23

Are you one of the millions of people who buy and sell on eBay? If you are, then this book is for you! Author Nancy Conner, has written an outstanding book that will help you get to the site, get registered, and get going.

Conner, begins by showing you everything you need to get going on eBay. Then, she shows you how to bid on eBay auctions with confidence. The author continues by showing you how to search better than the competition and bid smarter. In addition, she then shares other secrets serious shoppers use to prevail on eBay. The author also introduces eBay tips and tricks. Then, the author shows you how to hone in on your strategy for a competitive edge. Next, she shows you how to turn your eBay hobby into a part- or full-time business. Next, the author shows you how to get in on the action and create a sales niche within eBay's specialty auctions. Then, she briefly describes the software that you can use on eBay. The author continues by presenting general and specialized discussion groups, both on and off eBay, that will help you make satisfying connections. Finally, she covers a Learning Center just for newbies, a Help page, interactive help via live chat or e-mail, a centralized Services page, a site map, discussion boards, and more.

After reading this excellent book, you'll be using eBay like an old pro. In other words, this book was will help you ramp up your eBay experience--find more bargains, build better auctions, and close more sales.

5 out of 5 stars Whatever "it" is, you'll find it in the Missing Manual..........2005-11-21

If there was one book I would suggest to anyone venturing into the waters of eBay, it'd end up being this one... eBay: The Missing Manual by Nancy Conner. This one covers it all.

Contents:
Part 1 - Buying on eBay: Ready, Set, Shop!; Bidding, Paying, and Following Up; Finding - and Getting - Bargains; Power Buying Strategies
Part 2 - Selling on eBay: Sell Stuff, Make Money; Honing Your Competitive Edge; Going from Hobby to Business; Specialty Selling; Cool Tools for Sellers
Part 3 - Finding Other eBayers and Getting Help; Finding Help
Part 4 - Appendixes: Where to Learn More; HTML for eBayers; Other Auction Sites; Index

Like all other eBay books, this one covers how to buy and sell on eBay. The writing's good, but there'd be nothing special if it stopped there. Where this book earns its keep is when it goes into areas I haven't seen covered in any other book. I've never seen a book go into any detail on other resources to learn about eBay, such as call-in internet radio shows and newsletters. I've never seen a book cover HTML in a small number of pages in order to allow the seller to create better auction pages. There's good coverage on third-party sites that give you more information on how to best price your auctions. There's even material on how to evolve from buying and selling as a hobby to running a business based on eBay. Package all this up with clear writing and numerous screen shots, and you really *have* found the missing eBay manual.

To paraphrase eBay's latest ad campaign... "Whatever you're looking for, you'll find *it* in eBay: The Missing Manual"...

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time or your money........2004-03-26

I could write a book as long as this one about its deficiencies. My suggestion: buy a copy of a good general wine book, subscribe to a reputable wine publication and make friends with the owner of a local wine shop with whom you can develop a relationship of trust and seek his/her advice.

1 out of 5 stars Useless.......2003-10-23

I have gotten away from writting reviews, but I needed a forum to vent my dislike for this book. Fortunately for me, I borrowed a copy from the library. I cannot imagine paying anything for this book. I do not understand the point of the book. I only used listings that had websites and I found them all to charge as much as a local vendor for their products. How this is supposed to be wholesale is beyond me. For auto parts it lists only one site and they were higher than local stores. They listed a textbook selling site that supposedly charges cost, again I can do much better right here at Amazon. I was hoping to find a book telling me how to buy things at wholesale prices, then I would resell them and make extra money. This book told me how to buy things at retail prices, which I had already figured out on my own. I just cannot understand why this book was published.

2 out of 5 stars A Disapointment.......2003-05-15

This book is not for people looking for serious wholesaling.
All this information can be found by doing a search on the internet. I found very few true wholesalers. I have been able to find much better pricings at alternate sites. Find a different book to buy if you're truly looking for real wholesale companies.

1 out of 5 stars If your looking for true WHOLESALE, don't buy this book.......2002-12-27

If you are looking for BARGAINS and you are incapable or just impatient to use a search engine like Google or Yahoo, buy this book. If you are looking to buy at WHOLESALE (as in having a re-seller's liscense as I was), DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK. The word "wholesale" was greatly misused in the title of this book and interestingly enough, when I purchased this book (thankfully on a bargain rack) at my local book store, the lady told me that the name had changed beginning in 2003.....interesting.

4 out of 5 stars It's worth the price.......2002-06-28

I paid all of about $8 for this book and, within a week, had made more than my money back in savings on purchases. Although the book misses several of my favorite bargain websites - so it only gets 4 stars instead of 5 - it lists a huge number more that I was previously unaware of.

The book is conveniently organized into sections on furniture, clothing, sporting goods etc, with a page devoted to each website or catalog under each heading. Given the huge number of websites and catalogs out there, it's useful to have a book like this to help sift through them.

4 out of 5 stars starts from scratch.......2004-10-15

Miller gives a nice, very lightly technical guide to effective online shopping. To someone like you, maybe, who has never bought online, it can seem like a forbidding new world. So what Miller does is step through the fundamentals. Starting with a chapter giving a general guide to what you can expect at many online websites. One key thing you should realise is that the payment by credit card is really no different from traditional real world usage. Nor, despite everything you might read about online fraud, is it any riskier. But he does also go into describing those frauds.

He also gives brief but effective coverage of major online sites. Like Amazon and eBay. On the subject of using eBay, you can find entire books devoted to this. Miller's is more succinct, and is more than adequate to get you started on eBay, if you so desire.

The second half of the book is an appendix of useful websites, grouped by their main interests. A little mundane to experienced surfers. But perhaps not to you.

1 out of 5 stars Outdated and Immature Internet Site Recommendations.......2001-01-06

Published in 2000, this booklet is already, alas, outdated. For example, out of 15 searches, 2 sites were "unavailable" ...4 were out of business... several had pages "in process"... one was too pale to read... some were impossible to navigate or didn't know how to respond "this product is unavailable."

In short, out of 15 sites, only one recommendation was "professional." (yahoo.com)

Some excellent sites were missing, like ewolfs for antiques.

There is no index and many entries are simply repeated under different headings, so in fact there are fewer than 1600 recommended sites.

Sorry, Ms. Welsh and McGraw-Hill! I know you worked on this for a long time... maybe you can publish another (indexed)edition when internet businesses stabilize.

4 out of 5 stars Finally, A Guide on Shopping for the new Millenium.......2004-02-14

It's scary to think shopping can be made a lot easier than it already is. With the internet, now shopping is so easy you can find almost everything in a matter of minutes, depending on how fast your computer loads. Hillary Mendelsohn's book is nothing new, since there has been directories of internet companies before, but she does present it in a manner shoppers are more used to, rather than in technogeek language. Another book worth exploring if you are looking for internet shopping: Stretch Your Dollars by Buying Wholesale. Saving money so that you can buy more is always exceptional, isn't it? My wife thinks so! Thanks to the internet, she now has more stores to shop til her fingers drop.

3 out of 5 stars great book, awfully familiar.......2003-12-20

thepurplebook is a great book for those who don't get out to read Cosmo, Glamour,InStyle, YM, W, GQ, Better Homes and Garden and basically any periodical currently printed in the U.S. or abroad. The term "authorship" is so loose these days. Sure the sites are great, if you can find one that works. We all know how website have a tendency to die online. However, I found some real gems. Thanks InStyle! It's really too difficult to decipher (and the print is too small) for the elderly. And the gen-exers like myself, really don't have the cash to spend $200 for a handbag or pay the large amount of money alot of these sites are asking for their goods and services. I probably wouldn't buy thepurplebook, instead I'd pick it up at your local library.

        5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC!!!.......2003-12-11

This is a terrific, well-researched and well-organized resource, one of the best guides I have ever read. THEPURPLEBOOK starts where search engines leave off, helping to get through the clutter. Cheers to Ms. Mendelsohn for a terrific book. A great stocking-stuffer. I can't wait for next year's edition!

4 out of 5 stars All things to all people?.......2003-11-24

This is a rather Zagattish commentary (unfortunately without the point score) on the 1600 or so sites the book tries to cover.

The real value and unfortunately the (slight) failing of the book is that it tries to be too broad. In addition not everything in the book is perfect. I spotted some slight inaccuracies in some websites that I am a regular customer of. Secondly, the narrative is simply too Categorical in its comments, and one suspects that a lot of insight may be colored by the perspective garned from the particular website itself and not through a real user experience. Unlike Zagat, there is very little of the equivocation that may suggest the particular (shopping) website could have failings, or that it may not be so good. Indeed, it would appear that virtually all comments about each (shopping) website highlights the positive ...

Nevertheless, this opus provides the reader with a valuable trove of information. I personally found the epicurean section as well as the stationery/gifts section most useful, although that might reflect my personal biases. While I also question the breakdown of the shopping categories in the book, but on the whole, I recommend it, and think that it is by far the best in its class.

I'm slightly surprised that Amazon did not put out sample pages (at least of the writing of this review) as that would allow customers to have a much better feel for the book. In any case, here's my input:

Opening a random page in women's wear includes the following sites in (continued) alphabetical order:
        1) Peruvian connection
        2) Pieceunique.com
        3) Purpleskirt.com
        4) Ravinstyle.com
        5) Sauvagewear.com
        6) Seamlessbody.com

And just in case you were wondering what they thought about Amazon? Amazon appears twice. The first is under the segment "Entertainment" (which includes books). The entire spiel is as follows:

"The first name in Internet retail has come a long way from its origins as strictly a bookseller. Its expanision started, logically, with music and videos, but has gone on to plenty else. But it's a continued master of entertainment media that keeps us coming back. Here you may listen to music samples, read book samples and read customer reviews of just about anything. There are plenty of reasons these guys are No. one, and you probably don't want to read about them here. Suffice to say, if for some strange reason you've never visited, check it out"

Here's one more random example from www.clambakeco.com:

"Clambakes to travel. When it's time for a good old-fashion clambake, you can do no better than to visit this new-fangled speciality retailer. What's a clambake? Well, as these guys have it, its a shindig that involves steamed lobster, mussels, vegetables, Portugese sausage and of course clams. Yes it sounds like a lot to prepare, but that's the great thing about this site: they send you a pre-packed steamer pot ... You simply add water, put over a flame and 20 min or so later you have a full fledged clamback for as any people as you need. It couldn't be easier, and you get to keep the pot."

4 out of 5 stars A Guide for the Shopaholic!!.......2003-11-11

When I first found out about the Purple Book I was very excited, I love to shop and to find unique buys and often don't run across great websites because they are hard to find. This is a great resource across many categories to help you find what you need online and to discover some great sites for shopping.

The one aspect of the book that I didn't like was that it listed sites that are very known an common such as some brick & mortar stores or very promient online stores (Gap, Abercrombie & Fitch, Ebay, etc...) I was hoping there would be more focus on stores that were unique and off the beaten path but I have found some sites that I never knew of before and it is a great resource so I would highly recommend this for anyone that loves to shop as much as I do!!
