3 out of 5 stars High hopes weren't quite fulfilled.......2007-10-06

I had high hopes for this book. Great title, but it left me feeling a little disappointed. I learnt a few things, but it didn't represent any huge breakthroughs. My favorite part was chapter 4 which reviewed the pros and cons of the various listing tools and software.

5 out of 5 stars Easy and informative.......2007-09-11

If you are interested in becoming a more effective seller and a knowledgeable buyer this is a very informative book. Its simple format lends itself to quick reference or more in-depth discussions, depending on your level of inquiry. I've read a lot of ebay books and this is a great one to purchase! Check out my ebay profile at jjjs04. Good luck!

5 out of 5 stars Great tips of the trade!.......2007-01-18

Way to go!

This book gave me more information that I ever could have needed for starting up an Ebay business and I will continue to use it as a reference and guide for many of the troubling questions that arise in the cyber-business world.

The authors gave you more resources than you can imagine as well as detailing the benefits of becoming an Ebay Power Seller. It's amazing how much information they crammed between the pages and how amazingly detailed and forthcoming they were with the information. I was surprised to see the multiple lists for valuable online resources, and for those of us who learn best by seeing things in action-- they even have screen-shot pictures in the book with the corresponding URLs to the areas that can give you the most information.

As stated before, this book has a permanent place on my shelf as a reference guide to Ebay and beyond. Even if you're a current seller on Ebay, looking to upgrade your status to a Power Seller, give this book a shot. It could give you the extra boost you need for driving your business toward its goals and setting you on the right paths toward them.

Excellent and recommended tool for your Ebay business!

This book has so many cool tricks you can use on ebay, that its virtually impossible to fail and not make good money. Lerning from the many experiences of other sellers is essential for me, expecially when it comes to learn from their mistakes. Great guide.

5 out of 5 stars The authors are great at introducing the reader to all aspects of starting their own shop.......2006-05-08

"HOW TO OPEN A FINANCIALLY SUCCESSFUL RETAIL & GOURMET FOODS SHOP" by Sharon L. Fullen and Douglas R. Brown.

Starting your own business can be extremely scary, it doesn't matter what type of business it is. If you are interested in starting a specialty foods shop it can be even scarier because of the lack of competent information available. "How to Open a Financially Successful Specialty retail & gourmet foods shop" is one of the most comprehensive books of its kind in the market place.

The authors are great at introducing the reader to all aspects of starting their own shop. The book is written in an easy to understand conversational tone. With sections specifically on goal setting this book is geared toward the new entrepreneur that does not have past business start up experience.

Read this book before going even considering opening a specialty retail or gourmet foods shop. Many aspects of operating a specialty business can be overlooking in the heat of your ambitions. This book will guide you in identifying all the major areas of concern before you put up all your money and invest months of your time.

The book also comes with a CD that contains pre-written documents that will be very useful in starting and operating your business. This book is highly recommended to anyone who wants to know more about the gourmet foods industry and of course to people interested in starting their own specialty foods shop.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2006-04-19

The book begins with an overview of what a gourmet shop consists of and how much energy is needed in order to successfully run one. This book gives a complete picture of everything that is needed to run a successful gourmet store. It is comprehensive enough for someone who has never opened a business before to easily start a shop.

It goes into great details of the initial costs and strategies that will be needed at start up. There is even a special section on franchising and writing a business plan. Other areas include taxes, laws, licenses, and insurances that will be needed. There are also skillfully crafted chapters which focus two main areas employee relations and customers including marketing and public relations.

There are chapters that center on the equipment that may be needed and the types of product that can be used in the store. A CD-ROM completes the book, with many forms that can help anyone who goes into business. There are even sections that deal with cash flow and financial management as well as purchasing.

This book offers a comprehensive overview on many of how to start a Specialty Retail business and with the step by step process, anyone can be successful.

5 out of 5 stars Good Read.......2006-04-13

"How to Open a Financially Successful Specialty Retail and Gourmet Foods Shop" is a great read for anyone looking to own their own specialty or niche store. From selling only jam to selling complex kitchen gadgets, this book is great for anyone looking to delve into any niche market.

The authors take readers through a number of get ready steps. They include, among other things, picking location, deciding what merchandise to carry, identifying the target audience, writing a business plan, filing the loan application, and getting the necessities (such as company name, licenses, insurance, etc.).

I love that the book details every thing I would need to know about opening a specialty business. It even discusses decorating tips, hiring a staff, marketing the business, and creating a press kit. Because the book covers so much, it tends to cover only the basics of all the topics. It does not go really in-depth on most items, so if you are looking for some exact how-to guide, this book probably is not for you.

The book also comes with a handy cd-rom that provides sample business plans and other worksheets that I found very helpful. You can easily take the business plan and modify it to suit your start-up business. In addition, there are a number of great resources listed within the pages of the book that any new business owner would find beneficial.

5 out of 5 stars User-Friendly, Quality Advice.......2006-04-11

Perhaps the best piece of information in this handy guide by Sharon Fullen and Douglas Brown is
found on the first couple of pages: make sure your heart is in before you take the leap. They offer nuggets of advice to test your mettle; such as coming up with a short "elevator pitch" to capture the essence of your dream and how valuable careful research becomes if you want to discover your true "niche" market. Information on buying a franchise or starting from scratch, financial avenues to consider and a good outline for a business plan quickly follows. Other chapters present the importance of customer service, successful marketing tips and how to deliver a top-notch public relation campaign that attracts repeat business. You will also discover that the basic mechanics of running a business are not ignored; with sections devoted to purchasing, buying appropriate equipment, staffing, finding user-friendly software, monitoring inventory, managing cash flow and creating ambience in the public areas of the shop. The CD-ROM contains much of the same information found in the book, but does included printable business forms for home and office use, a supply list, as well as a more detailed business plan to use as your own template. Overall this book is very user-friendly, offers quality advice and presents up-to-date information. An important resource you will be able to refer to for many years

Book Description

More than 700,000 franchise businesses in the U.S. generate $800 billion in sales annually. Every eight minutes during the business day, a new franchise opens. What No One Ever Tells You About Franchising is a must-have for the thousands of business owners who want to franchise their concepts, and for the thousands of buyers longing to purchase a franchise.

Jan Norman, journalist and expert in entrepreneurship, gives readers a look at franchising from the trenches. Readers learn firsthand from 101 successful franchisors, franchisees, and experts a wealth of recommendations for making their dreams of franchising a reality.

Chapters for franchisors cover all the essentials, from identifying the right territories, suppliers, and partners, to creating a brand worth buying and maintaining quality control. Chapters for franchisees give the hard facts on topics such as negotiating terms, evaluating the stability of the franchise, identifying hidden costs, and marketing beyond the franchisor’s advertising. A glossary of terms, a list of industry associations, and sample agreements make this the most complete reference of its kind.

Unlike academic texts or strictly how-to manuals on the subject of franchising, Norman’s book combines practical techniques with an abundance of tips and anecdotes from entrepreneurs.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Huge Disappointment.......2007-02-11

If you want an easy read about franchising, this book may work for you, but if you're seeking insight into the subject, then avoid it! It's simply a collection of short anecdotes from people who have had franchises or run franchise companies, mostly some time ago. While that's true to the title, the stories either cover the blindingly obvious or else were so generic as to be useless. As someone who is seeking real advice and tips about starting a franchise business, I found this book a huge disappointment.

5 out of 5 stars Good, practical advice.......2006-06-11

Jan Norman interviews numerous franchisors and franchisees who provide very practical advice about franchising. The book is well organized and extremely helpful.

What I liked about this book is that it gave you practical advice from a number of different sources. We would never, on our own, be able to talk to so many people with so many different experiences.

Jan Norman asks good questions and gives us a broad and fair representation of the view from both the franchisor's position and the fanchisee's position.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars I was not impressed.......2003-01-03

Folks use your common sence and save the 12 bucks on this one. This book would be good for any one under 16, but for even the
most sheltered adult this book will be a waste of your time. Good Luck

4 out of 5 stars Good Overview.......2001-08-18

This book provided a good overview for some one looking to get started in the retail business. I would caution readers that much of the information is directed more towards a retail business that will be located in a mall setting, not necessarily a stand-alone or downtown located specialty or boutique shop. With that in mind, it certainly provided good personal advice and insight.

2 out of 5 stars So you want to own the Store :.......2000-07-12

A general summary of how to start and run a store, almost common sense. Not very use full in terms of marketing and customer service. Based on an 'American' way of running a large size store instead of a boutique store.

5 out of 5 stars A must-read for any aspiring retail entrepreneur.......1998-07-22

Mort Brown offers indispensable advice to people considering going into retail business for themselves. His conversational style and examples from his own experiences running a candy shop and a pet store offer the reader a behind-the-scenes look at what goes into the retail operation. From the daily interaction with customers, to the satisfaction that comes from being your own boss, Brown shares his wisdom on every topic related to running a profitable retail operation. If you're thinking about opening your own store, you'd be wise to read this book before you draft the first page of your business plan. One wonders how many retail failures might have been successes if only their proprietors had read Mort Brown's "So You Want To Own The Store" and taken his advice to heart.

    Book Description

    From the Introduction:
""In the next few years the retail market will change dramatically. In order to survive, a store will have to become its own brand. A strong brand can differentiate a store from competition. The emotional differences between retail brands will therefore become more and more important.""

Most retailers' revenue and profit comes from the selling of many of the same brands offered by their competitors. In order to stand out from the competition, retailers need to become brands themselves. Meeting this challenge will ensure differentiation.

Ko Floor offers strategies to build a brand identity by positioning on price, convenience and store experience and he explores brand personality and brand communication. He offers examples from an extensive body of retail brands, from Wal-Mart to IKEA, Home Depot, Amazon and Starbucks.

    Customer Reviews:

Every retailer in the world is finding out that product and price are no longer enough to differentiate. Connecting emotionally with the customer is the key to success: branding a store can build this emotional connection. Good book. Very interesting case studies. Recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Branding a Store is a "must-read" especially for retail marketers big and small........2006-12-09

Author Ko Floor applies his nearly forty years of retail experience in Branding a Store, a guide to the core competency of developing and differentiating retail brand identities. Chapters instruct the reader in retail brand positioning, differentiating brand personality, retail brand communications, the four different types of consumer shopping (speedy, low-cost replenishment shopping, solution-driven shopping, self-expression shopping, and sense of discovery shopping), forecasts for the future (such as his prediction that each retail sector will become dominated by two or three megabrands), and much more. Written in straightforward, no-nonsense language, Branding a Store is a "must-read" especially for retail marketers big and small.

3 out of 5 stars Building effective online bank web portals.......2001-10-25

I am a banker by profession and also a postgraduate research student for the MSc in Internet Banking. I have read several books and articles on this subject and I would recommend, this book if you want a concise coverage in the area of Internet Banking. The book is unique in the sense that it is the only book I know which covers the use of Portal model in online banking. The book is based on the authors' analysis of 1,753 banks in the US and dicusses areas of Internet Banking which I have not seen elsewhere. For example, chapter 14 of the book discuss exclusively on reasons why a successful bank web site must be entertaining.

In addition, the book is geared towards designing customer effective online banking portals and I would recommend it to banks that are planning to enter into Internet Banking.

However, the major draw back of this book is there is no biographies! I just cannot understand how the authors could have completely forgotten this important area especially as they are all professors. Hence, a student planning to do research or expand his knowledge will be disappointed with the book. (I am!)

So unless you can get your company to buy it as a reference book for Internet Banking, I suggest you glean the Internet for similar material. However, I must inform you that you may not be able to find all that is covered in the book

The proposed techniques are useful for a start up business and a mega chiain store. It is full of sketches to show the impact of different locations on the store traffic.

If you only need one book for store location. Then this is it.

5 out of 5 stars Informative, Insightful, and Instruction.......2000-03-26

The basic premise of this book is based on the relationship between two things: location and market. To borrow a quote from the book - " The right location in the wrong market will cause your business to fail - more than if you plan the wrong location in the right market." Building upon this belief, the author teaches the reader how to systematically go about researching for the right information as well as analyzing it. The book is written in a down to earth manner and is very easy to follow. It is comphrehensive and is one of the best books on choosing location.
