A must for Six Sigma DFSS .......2007-05-13
I learned statistics back in the university then never applied concepts and after some 10 years I was challenged to undertake basic statistics matters in the way of learning Six Sigma. This book is very focused on the variation and the graphical interpretation of data. Yuo may read this book over a weekend then attack Six Sima stats without pain.
Interpreting data is about the patterns, not the points.......2007-03-07
This is not a book for people looking for the technical detail of data analysis or statistical process control. The pearl in this book is the message that interpreting your data (such as KPIs or performance measures) is about looking at patterns, not at individual points. It's a book that can be read by people not interested in the technical stuff (such as managers or executives) - and it *should* be read by these people. We have to move beyond the days of comparing this month to last month to judge business performance, and this book is a great step in the right direction!
The best concept book for non-technical people.......2007-03-07
I would agree that the details in the book are very, very basic. But that is what makes this so great in my opinion. Most organizations are focused on very small changes in numbers - something moved by a tenth of a percent, the punishments or celebrations must begin immediately - that are, in fact, not driven by anything anyone "did". I have worked with people who were very focused on the "moment". This book is excellent at communicating why that may not be the best way to manage a business. This is written for a business person, not someone who loves statistics, and for that audience the message comes across very, very well.
Review.......2007-01-15
My order came in complete, damage free, and actualy shipped early. I'm very satisfied with this purchase through Amazon.
Very superficial.......2006-12-12
Wheeler has only one premise: plot everything on an XmR chart and watch for outliers or trends. The entire book has very little other technical suggestions for data analysis. Wheeler's mathematical detail is extremely weak. For example, he doesn't show where any of the multiplicative factors come from nor does he give references. The same depth of knowledge can be gained in 10 minutes with a Google search.

Book Description
Practical Lean Accounting: A Proven System for Measuring and Managing the Lean Enterprise Brian Maskell and Bruce Baggaley
As companies move ahead with the implementation of lean production, financial functions often lag behind. When this happens, not only do they fail to actively support the effort, but they can actually hinder it.
In Practical Lean Accounting: A Proven System for Measuring and Managing the Lean Enterprise, authors Brian Maskell and Bruce Baggaley present a step-by-step method for transforming a manufacturing company's financial functions to support lean manufacturing. This step-by-step method transforms the accounting system to follow the company's pathway through lean implementation covering what needs to be done at each stage to support lean.
A case study runs throughout the text illustrating the lean accounting transformation within the context of the whole lean enterprise. A CD-ROM is included containing detailed forms, charts, and diagrams supporting the transformation to lean accounting.
Practical Lean Accounting is a valuable tool for CFOs, Controllers, accounting staff, and general managers that use key financial information to control their processes and support lean implementation.

Who' Counting & Practical Lean Accounting: 1+1>2.......2007-07-16
"Who's Counting" and "Practical Lean Accounting" are two great books on lean accounting. I wondered some time ago, which one to read and I am glad that I could not decide, so I bought and read them both. They complement each other extremely well and each one conveys the lessons of lean accounting from a different angle.
"Practical Lean Accounting" is a well structured textbook, approaching lean accounting in a systemized way. Starting from straight-forward shop-floor measurements, like the day-by-the-hour report, it gradually immerses the reader into more demanding topics, like value stream costing or lean performance measurement, culminating in the thorough description of the Sales, Operations and Financial Planning (SOFP) process, which is the way, how an entire lean enterprise is planned, controlled and measured. Lean practitioners looking for specific answers to particular questions will find it easy to navigate through the book. People with the luxury of time for reading it cover to cover will also like it, due to the gradual increase in the complexity of the topics and the many references to other chapters.
"Who's Counting" focuses more on the human side of turning the vision of lean accounting into reality. The novel format is the best way to illustrate, how strong the resistance against change will be and from how many corners of the organization it will attack back. Knowing what to do and knowing why is not enough, the issue is not capturing people's brains. The real challenge is conquering their hearts, while tearing down decades worth of wrong beliefs, bad trade-offs and political game-playing. Mike, the hero of the book teaches us through his own mistakes, that patience, tactfulness and respect for people is more helpful, then acting like a bull in a china shop. The reward is the enthusiastic desire of fellows to go his way and take ownership of the new processes. He even manages to turn Fred, a CFO who has to recognize, that most of what he built during his career was wrong, to use the 3 years until his retirement for becoming the most enthusiastic advocate of change!
Both books provide the reader with insight and incite self-reflection about "the way, we do things". There is hardly any chapter without a sacred cow being slaughtered, however this will strike the reader as plain common sense, due to the thorough description of the reasons. Deeply engrained management practices, such as approval routings, full absorption overhead allocation, standard costing or departmental budgeting will seem ridiculous, once the reader starts to open the eyes to see their fundamentally wrong assumptions.
These books will make You hate many of Your current processes!
The Best Management Accounting Book in Years.......2006-11-08
"Practical Lean Accounting" is the best management accounting book I've read in 20 years - maybe more. Well written and illustrated with plenty of examples and diagrams, it adds new tools to management accounting and restores the relevance of some older ones. As such I recommend it to all management accountants and students - whether or not you are involved in lean accounting itself.
The aim of the book is to "produce a roadmap for finance managers in companies seeking to transition their organisations into lean enterprises". Lean accounting is a new approach to managing a business and, as management accountants, we have a duty to be there. As the authors say "it's never too early to start dismantling the company's transaction driven control systems. They represent huge amounts of waste and cost to the organisation !".
Specifically, lean management seeks to radically restructure the organisation into Value Streams (rather than functional departments), and this requires new management accounting tools including Value Stream performance measures, Box Scores, new methods of planning and budgeting, target costing and a whole host of other tools. The book explores all these tools in detail. The introduction of "lean" tools also allows significant reduction in transactions in the company's accounting processes, including the elimination of full-absorption costing.
Lean accounting is, therefore, designed to replace "traditional" accounting techniques which encourage inefficient practices such as building inventory, and often lead to poor management decisions (using Standard costs). Traditional measures are also too complicated for operational employees to understand easily and are often too late to be useful in shopfloor decision making. Lean accounting, by contrast, is very much focused on simple visual shopfloor measures for instant decision making, coupled with management accounting tools for longer term planning.
"Practical Lean Accounting" provides a good overview of the lean management process, and excellent linkage to management accounting activities. Highly recommended.
Convert your accounting methods.......2006-03-09
Best book on how to get your accoutning function to look at, use and make use of lean costing which really makes your lean projects work.
Great Tool for the Lean Enterprise.......2004-04-18
This book is right on target for the emerging practice of Lean accounting. It gets into the brass tacks of what you really need to do to report results that really mean something to the folks that can take action to improve the business. The entire concept of Value Stream Costing makes so much sense it's a wonder we haven't been using it for decades.
We have asked manufacturing to change, change, change in order to improve results and compete in this global market yet we have ignored the need to provide the necessary support from the accounting area. This book shows, step by step, how accounting must partner with manufacturing as well as engineering to provide actionable information in a timely manner. The old conventions of standard costing and variance analysis lead to poor decisions and this book will explain why.
A must read if you are serious about Lean manufacturing!
Getting the "Dough" to Flow.......2004-03-01
Based on the tenets of lean thinking, Mr. Maskell & Mr Baggaley present a powerful & practical implementation methodology that is applicable to lean accounting and all lean business practices. By integrating lean accounting with the transition to lean systems thinking, organizations now have the measurement and analysis tools to make robust business decisions at any level.

Good text, but a little boring and long winded ..........2006-03-08
I used this book as a course text for my MBA class in introduction to operations. What I like about the book is simple, flowing text, good "summery section" at the end of the chapter and a wealth of problems. However, the book gets boring and long. A lot of textbooks are now full color and embellished with real life sidebars, and have great presentation qualities ... not this book! It's black and white, and things are hard to find in it.

Book Description
Supply chain management, both in industry and in academia, has grown rapidly over the past several years mainly due to an increase in corporate goals of reducing manufacturing costs and the savings that come from planning and managing the supply chain effectively. Most textbooks do not include models and decision support systems robust enough for industry. Designing and Managing the Supply Chain: Concepts, Strategies, and Cases, 2/e by Simchi-Levy, Kaminsky and Simchi-Levi discusses the problems, models and concepts derived from issues related to effective supply chain management. This text is suitable for both academic study and practicing professionals. While many core supply chain management issues are interrelated, the authors have tried to make each chapter as self-contained as possible so that the reader can refer directly to chapters covering topics of interest. Each chapter utilizes case studies and numerous examples. Mathematical and technical sections can be skipped without loss of continuity. The accompanying CD-ROM also provides two simulations, the Computerized Beer Game and the Risk Pool Game and a computerized tool, new to this edition, for developing and executing supply chain contracts. These packages help illustrate many of the concepts discussed.
Customer Reviews:
A good choice for a beginning text.......2006-07-06
I have this book as my text in the Business program at the University of Phoenix. I am not a supply chain manager and do not aspire to be, but it is a required course. Some of the math is a bit daunting (the phrase "using simple calculus" is an oxymoron to many) but even without knowing calculus the case studies and discussions convey the fundamentals effectively.
Visually, the book is also good, with a layout and graphic design that makes reading easier and not at all a strain on the eyes. That might not seem important when you are shopping for a text, but when you are reading the third chapter of the day sometime between supper and midnight, it will!
Outstanding Phenomenon.......2006-05-10
Words can not explain how much this book is valuable. Its pragmatic approach to supply chain is wonderful. I am sure any reader will have the same idea after reading this book. I really appreciate this great job. Special thanks to the authors.
Finally something you can read and enjoy.......2005-05-10
This book one of the rarest ocasions in SCM field when you read a book and enjoy its contents to the fullest. I agree with ine of the other reviewers that this is one of the BEST books about SCM. I highly recomend it as one of MUST have SCM books.
I needed something more concise.......2003-02-10
Good as a text book for an MBA program but I needed something concise and clear. I'll keep looking
The definitive book on supply chain management.......2003-01-17
The 1st edition of this book, authored by three leading scholars and consultants in the important, fast developing field of supply chain management, won several awards and high critical acclaim from professional associations, scholars, and managers.
The 2nd edition has addressed the few gaps in the the original edition, noticed mainly by by those who, like me, used the book to teach university level courses. Thus, in the new edition, anything complex (especially, quantitative ideas) is explained even more clearly and thoroughly than in the 1st edition. The managerial implications of research findings are spelled out even better, with more examples. Short, insightful discussion questions have been added following each chapter, and there are several new, interesting case studies in several chapters. Valuable new material has also been added, e.g., research findings and examples on how to design win-win supply chain contracts, and up-to-date material on the impact of e-commerce and information technology on supply chain management.
This book will be of value to all managers, but probably most to managers at middle and senior levels, as it provides a clear, coherent view of the entire subject while emphasizing strategic and tactical level decisions and planning. The authors have made a truly important contribution to the understanding and practice of supply chain management.

General System Theory: Foundations, Development, Applications
ASIN: 0750679735 |
Book Description
The first edition of Systems Thinking was the first book to develop a working concept of systems theory and to deal operationally with systems methodology. The author has been working for the last 5 years to incorporate parallel development in quantum theory, self-organizing systems and complexity theory, the sum of which is included in this new 2nd edition. He has tested these concepts with 200 executive MBA students, and also with Russell Ackoff, one of the founding fathers of systems thinking. Ackoff reported that it was the most comprehensive systems methodology he has seen.
The 2nd edition features the synthesis of holistic thinking (iteration of structure, function and process), operational thinking (understanding chaos and complexity), sociocultural systems (movement toward a predefined order), and interactive design (redesigning the future and inventing ways to bring it about).
Also added are the operational thinking and self-organizing aspect of sociocultural systems, with updates made to the holistic thinking and interactive design parts to incorporate recent new developments.
* Cutting edge thinking incorporates the interaction of holistic thinking, operational thinking, sociocultural systems, and interactive design to develop an all inclusive systems methodology
* Companion website built solely to accompany and compliment the new edition available at www.interactdesign.com
* Operational thinking and self organizing aspects of sociocultural systems added anew, with the holistic thinking and interactive design parts updated to incorporate new developments
Customer Reviews:
Don't be afraid,.......2007-08-27
This is really aimed at the reader who wishes to work on the transformation of whole organisations. Demonstrating the multi-dimensional relationships between organisational design, performance and behaviour.
This work has had a profound effect on my thinking and development of management ideas. It integrates many concepts into a systemic whole. I have used this book with many management teams in recent years.
If you are venturing into the world of systems thinking then this is probably the most accessible in terms of simplicity and breakthrough applications.
Putting these ideas into practice with your colleagues or management teams might seem a little daunting but it's the only way to learn and master the concepts which will bring deeper insight into organisational change and provide you with better solutions to some of your more persistent management issues. Don't be afraid.
Managing Chaos and Complexity: A Platform for Designing Business Architecture.......2007-02-18
My company recommended that I read this book in advance of training session with the author. I scanned the entire book today. Some useful info.
Multi-point reference, strong in all areas but very broad.......2006-04-14
The concepts of system thinking, enterprise architecture, business architecture are big enough by themselves to be covered in a book. Doing it all within the context of a single book is daunting and a topic that Gharajedaghi partially accomplishes.
I read this book as part of the research I did for my doctoral dissertation, so this review will have a bit of an academic bent.
Gharajedaghi is a strong believer in the Enterprise Architecture models of Zachman and that influence shows in his work. The book has a strong academic flavor in its use of terminology and how it describes systems thinking. Executives and consultants looking to understand these concepts will have to work at it a bit, but the work is worth it.
A strength of this work is the fact that includes actual case studies -- something that few people take the time to do. The five cases cover a variety of industries and situations that make the principles that Gharajedaghi discusses.
Overall, if you are a serious student of systems thinking this book is a good second level reference. Peter Senge's the 5th Discipline is the 'pop' version of systems thinking and Peter Checklund is the intermediate level and somewhat similar to this work.
Successful Integration of Systems Thinking "Camps".......2006-02-12
Gharajedaghi's 2nd edition has accomplished an incredible feat - he has successfully integrated and synthesized the systems dynamics of Forrester with the systems thinking and interactive design of Ackoff. Jamshid connects Holistic thinking, operational thinking, socio-cultural models/conceptions, and interactive design into a complementary whole. Our organization has learned and is using Jamshid's methodology and it is fundamentally changing the way in which we see the world and the organizations that will be able to compete in this new "flat" world.
If you're ready to escape the confines of linear thinking and classical science and management approaches to organizational problems, then this is your book. This book is written conceptually, not linearly, and challenges any reader who is used to over-simplified, mainstream books yet it is not an overly technical read that would be approachable only to high-level engineers and systems scientists. Those not having approached systems thinking before might be better off simultaneously working through Senge's Fifth Discipline and Ackoff's Best as primers. Be prepared to read it slowly and repeatedly - the ideas are profound when considered carefully and openly and might challenge many core assumptions.
Having met Jamshid on several occasions, I have found him to be one of the brighest men to grace our world with a significant contribution to share - he very well may have the current "best" answer to organizational design for our times. To dismiss him as simply an "Ackoff disciple" or another guru trying to sell his services is shortsighted. Linear, prescriptive books become best-sellers that catapult authors into 5-digit fee days - Jamshid's 2nd edition isn't the stuff of best-sellers, but rather for "best-thinkers."
Go west young man go west!.......2005-11-17
If this book takes you back to the source material, then it will have accomplished its goal. The book itself, lacks the finesse of it's intellectual founders. But by god do we need this book in order to point us back. The last three years have been a result of reading all the source material for the book and for that Jamshid - I thank you.
The best of luck.

Book Description
This book has been a job-training leader and valuable professional reference in rooms management for over two decades. It provides exceptionally complete coverage of the hotel's front office and all of the support positions that make it workfrom the international reservation network, to legal concerns, sales and marketing techniques, management issues, room rate formulas, control and oversight, etc. In a sequence that follows the flow of most guestsreservation, arrival, billing, departure, auditing and accountingthe book treats both the how-to (e.g., completing a reg card) and the wherefore (e.g., yield management) while keeping readers abreast of the trends currently affecting the industry. For hotel/resort managers and front-office support staff.
Customer Reviews:
a very good book.......2006-02-07
I bought this book to understand better the modern age in the hotel industry. I run a small hotel in Greece with my family and now we are building a new more up to date one. This book helped me to understand the hotel industry as a whole and the way it is changing. It covers with detail many issues, from GDS to bed making. There are hundrends of examples that make it easy to understand what is being discused. It is abstract at the beginning of every chapter and becomes more practical (how to do things) further on.
Although the books draws most cases and examples from big properties, I found it very helpful and discovered many ways to improve the service we offer in our small hotel.
It is one of the books that I will keep for reference and the best I have read so far, among those that try to cover almost every aspect of running a hotel. I can not think of someone in the hotel bussines who would not find this book intresting and worth reading.

THIS IS IS WELL WRITTEN BOOK IT COVERS ALL THE ISSUES ABOUT RUNNING A HOTEL/MOTEL.I FOUND THIS BOOK VERY HELPFUL.

Creating a Lean Culture: Tools to Sustain Lean Conversions
ASIN: 156327342X |
Book Description
Learn to Apply Systematic Improvements Throughout Your Organization! At the heart of Lean and Six Sigma is the same, unique business operating system: hoshin kanri. It is a method of strategic planning and a tool for managing complex projects, a quality operating system geared to ensuring that organizations faithfully translate the voice of the customer into new products, and a business operating system that ensures reliable profit growth.
The true power of hoshin kanri, however, is two-fold -- it is a superior organizational learning method as well as a competitive resource development system.
Hoshin Kanri for the Lean Enterprise, by Tom Jackson, explains how you can implement, identify and manage the critical relationships among your markets, design characteristics, production systems, and personnel to satisfy your customers and beat your competition.
This practical workbook provides:
A new understanding of hoshin kanri as a grand experimental design implemented through a system of team agreements. Clear explanations of the steps of hoshin kanri. A measure of overall business effectiveness used to determine the focus of corporate strategy. A new, improved X-matrix that incorporates a lean "balanced scorecard" for identifying improvement opportunities and converting them readily into bottom line results as a value stream P&L in terms that financial managers and accountants can understand and support. A CD containing forms, meeting agendas, and examples of X-matrices that serve marketing and design engineering as well as manufacturing. This workbook will show you the mechanics of implementing hoshin kanri, so that you can systematically improve your brand equity, implement Lean manufacturing and Six Sigma, and integrate your suppliers into a Lean and Six Sigma organization.
Customer Reviews:
The absolute best on hoshin kanri.......2006-09-10
Tom Jackson's practical and valuable insights are rivaled only by the importance and benefits of applying Hoshin Kanri. Hoshin Kanri as a practice has been applied as part of lean transformation efforts for quite a long time. But there were still very limited resources for people to learn more about it. Tom's work in this arena is extensive, and throughout all of his books (others are Implementing a Lean Management System and Corporate Diagnosis), he has focused on tools and systems for management to use in a lean company. This is the only book you'll need - I highly recommend picking it up.
One of the things I most appreciate about this book is how it integrates hoshin kanri with the Plan-Do-Check-Act process. This of course is the intent of hoshin kanri, but the linkage was never presented so clearly.

Book review in American Shipper magazine.......2004-07-07
From "Know your supply chain variables" by Philip Damas, American Shipper, July 2004
While avoiding industry jargon and the hyperbole often used by logistics consultants, this book guides the reader with clarity and purpose through many supply chain aspects, from order fulfillment to logistics network optimization, through order forecasts and product design.
A common theme of this book is the need for global optimization across all corporate functions, all warehouses or locations, and across companies that share the same supply chains.

Book Description
This text provides a survey of the most innovative techniques and methods for managing operations in services and manufacturing. It presents all concepts with a real-world perspective based on the extensive global consulting work of the lead author, Dick Schonberger. This text is unique due to its customer-focused approach. Using the authors 15 principles as a framework for organizing the text This text stresses teamwork, quality, and customer service in both manufacturing and services, as well as traditional topics such as product and service design, purchasing, inventory, location and layout, and scheduling are also included. Quantitative coverage is de-emphasized.
Customer Reviews:
The best general undergraduate treatment of operations management-4.5 stars.......2006-01-26
Knod and Schonberger have written the best general text available on production/operations management at the undergraduate level. The text has very good chapters on Capacity Planning(aggregate capacity planning),Scheduling,Design(reliability and serviceability),Quality and process control(especially pp.318-322 on mean and range charts and pp.327-330 on process capability analysis),Inventory control,Timing(waiting lines and queues),and PERT.A minor weakness is that a discussion of the use of the Beta distribution in PERT analysis is omitted from the book.Anyone who covers this book throughly will be very well prepared to take senior level undergraduate courses and graduate level courses in operations management.
Mixed - good survey and quan, weaker on soft subjects.......1999-01-06
Fairly good survey book. Having an undergrad operations background, I found this book mirrored the strengths and weaknesses of a more detailed operations curriculum. Book is best in framework and quantitative model overviews, weaker on softer subjects like staffing, project management, & holistic quality.
Highly over-rated . Full of fluff.......1997-10-22
If your MBA professor offers Schonberger as the answer to 21st Century Operations Management, seek a transfer quick. Obsessed with a touchy-feeling "quality paradigm", there is not enough meat here to frighten off the most zealous vegetarian. The chapters on "managing projects" and "facilities management" are especially shallow.

Book Description
Focusing on the lean supply chain from an operations perspective, this insightful book offers a thorough overview, covering the activities of all the companies involved in the flow of products, services, finances, and information - from the initial suppliers to the ultimate users. It provides candid discussions of managers' tasks and responsibilities and how they may be best accomplished through the use of such conceptual tools as lean thinking, theory of constraints, and the balanced scorecard. The book uniquely integrates the discussion of theory of constraints with the lean supply chain, illustrating how both champion the use of pull to create the flow of goods and services through the value chain while emphasizing that lean is indeed a growth strategy.
Customer Reviews:
Good book.......2007-03-08
This book is concise in dealing with the basics and the advanced materials in the subject. Author's language is discernible even for those who are not familiar with this concept.
Crack the Bullwhip!.......2006-05-02
I am the Corporate Lean Champion for a global manufacturing company. I had heard of the bullwhip effect but did not thoroughly understand it before reading "the book" as I refer to it when recommending it to my Lean students. Streamlined helped me to put a plan together utilizing rate based planning, Lean variation reduction tools, and pull protocols to Crack the Bullwhip effect and drive it out of our organization!
Streamlined is a "must read" for any Lean practitioner, operations Leader, supply chain leader ot MBA student.
An Excellent Guide.......2006-01-08
I actually got the opportunity to study under Srini and can verify his expertise in this field. I picked up more than a few great ideas in this book that I hadn't seen in the many books I have read on the subject. I would recommend this book to students, managers, and specialist at all experience levels.
Excellent textbook for an advanced undergarduate course as well as MBA courses.......2005-06-28
I have adopted "streamlined" for an advanced topics in management course on lean supply chains. The challenge of finding a book that goes beyond the abstract concepts to more detailed and parctical steps for implementation has been greatly alleviated by "streamlined." Dr. Srinivasan provides the reader and the student in particular with a very well thought out and written text. My students' initial worries about the rigor and difficulty of the subject matter were quickly mitigated after reading the first few chapters.
The 14 principles provided me, the professor, an organizing framework for the delivery of the course, the assignments and the term project. The students and myself found "streamlined" to be very interesting, thought proviking, and useful.
This book is a must-read for any faculty member regardless of their discipline as the topics covered cut across all functional areas of business and provide a much-needed integrative approach.
Very thorough read.......2005-02-05
This book covers the concepts around supply chain optimization in depth. In our company we are using these techniques to improve the lead time in our global manufacturing supply chain.
