Shelley Tea Ware Patterns.......2007-08-24
This is a great reference book for Shelley china collectors. It shows pattern shapes, pattern numbers and color photos of the hundreds of Shelley tea sets. Great for a beginning collector or for someone who wants
to catalog their collection. Also,it gives the history of the Shelley company from 1860 to its end in 1966. I like this reference book the best of all the Shelley books I have collected.

Book Description
This comprehensive new reference focuses on the variety of animal figures produced in Staffordshire during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Characterized by a cottage industry quaintness, Staffordshire figures were known as "image toys" and "chimney ornaments" in their day. Countless subjects were produced but the animal models comprise a Noah's Ark of some of the most charming and endearing figures. Today, Staffordshire animals are among the bestselling and most widely collected antique ceramics. Beautifully illustrated with over 400 color photographs, this book traces animal figure evolution through chapters on animals in art, British ceramics, Staffordshire potters and potteries, and production techniques and styles. Informative captions provide descriptions, dates of manufacture, and current values.

Staffordshire Animals.......2007-07-16
This book is well worth the money if you are an avid collector of Straffordshire pieces. Many detailed photographs, identifiying marks and interesting history make this book a must for your collection. Highly recommend.
Bravo Adele Kenny and Schiffer Publishing.......2001-11-04
In words of one syllable, YOU MUST BUY THIS BOOK! As the owner of an antiques business and one who sells Staffordshire figures, I endorse this book without reservation. Narrowing the subject to one category of Staffordshire collecting and an in-depth study makes this reference text as unique as Adele Kenny's other books and numerous articles that have been published in widely circulated periodicals like The Antiques News, Antiques & Auction News, and Carter's Antiques & Collectables (Australia). This is MUCH more than the usual Stafforshire picture book (although the hundreds of illustrations are marvelous). The presentation is wonderful, the book design and quality are superior, and the content is without equal. Staffordshire Animals is destined to become a standard reference in the field.
For Lovers of Staffordshire: YOU NEED THIS BOOK!.......2000-08-09
This specialized and comprehensive reference book is a must-have for collectors and dealers! Unlike those large and unwieldy "catalogs" of little more than picture after picture, Kenny has included interesting amd informative text that provides invaluable insights into pottery making in Staffordshire as well as a substantial sampling of illustrations. Suggested values give an accurate sense of current, and rising, market. Kenny's book is well-organized and beautifully presented. Her writing style is intelligent, lively, and very reader-friendly. If you love Staffordshire figures, you'll love this book!

Not the best.......2004-03-28
When I got this book I knew it was from 1991,but there were pictures in from 1985 it left me with the feeling it was an old book .The overall feeling of this book was that there was a lot of good info about the kennels in the U.S.A.but the lay-out is in my opninion not so good.
So overall 3 stars for the book!
Good Introductory Book.......2004-03-27
I found this book to contain repetitive information. As well, the pictures in the book (which there are lots of) unfortunately are almost all from the early to mid 80's (still lots of beautiful boys/girls). Perhaps, I'm an owner who is looking for more than general information.
I'm not slagging the book, it does have good info. It may be better suited to those who are new owners of the breeds, or those who have a new found interest in the Staffordshire terriers. It's a nice looking hardcover book, that'll look good on any owners' book shelf or coffee table. I'll keep this book handy for friends/family to read, if they have any concerns or have been misinformed about the dreaded "pitbulls".
A must buy book for an American Staffordshire Terrier owner.......1999-05-15
This is a very well written book by a very respected AKC judge and it thoroughly covers the breed. I found the kennel histories most informative and wuld reccomend this to be part of every American Staffordshire Terrier owners library.

Book Description
In the half century before 1790, there had been only one contested election in Newcastle, but between 1790 and 1832 there were a dozen. This new and heated political climate prompted the production of a vast array of printed propaganda and political commentary, aimed at voters and non-voters alike. Most of this material took the form of single printed sheets, or broadsides, produced in great numbers and distributed amongst the town's inhabitants for free. This volume reproduces just over three hundred Newcastle broadsides published during this time; they constitute an important and unique collection, for though such material was produced in many constituencies in Hanoverian England, rarely has it survived in such a complete form. Material comes from Keele University Library, the Sutherland papers at the Staffordshire Record Office, and Newcastle Museum. A representative selection of reproductions of original broadsides is included to give the reader an idea of how contemporaries would have seen the texts and an introduction explains their context.Dr HANNAH BARKER is Lecturer in History at the University of Manchester; Dr DAVID VINCENT is Professor of Social History at the University of Keele.

Excelant reference.......2007-06-28
This book is for lovers of these beautiful dogs or those interested in their beginnings. Very informative book, and lots of colored pictures to help with ones selection of a spaniel. I recommend as this be number 1 book of choice about these Staffordshire dogs.
STAFFORDSHIRE SPANIELS:SUBSTANTIAL TEXT & BEAUTIFUL ILLUST.......2001-11-30
This terrific book traces the history, manufacture, and various styles of the traditional Comforter Spaniel made in Staffordshire, England during the 19th century. It is a comprehensive study with substantial text and beautiful illustrations, and it is written in a style that keeps the reader turning pages. As a collector and dealer, I have found this book to be extremely useful - I can't keep enough copies in my store, and I keep it at the top of the stack on my coffee table at home. This is a perfect reference and a perfect gift for anyone who appreciates the primitive beauty of the well-known Staffordshire Spaniel. Be sure to check out its companion text, Staffordshire Animals, by the same author and publisher!
A Great Read with Lots of Info and Beautiful Illustrations.......2001-11-04
This book, the only one I know of that deals specifically with Staffordshire Spaniels, is an invaluable reference for collectors and dealers alike. It offers a wide range of over 285 superb full-color illustrations, descriptive captions, and suggested values that reflect various market and regional trends. The book is packed with important historical and production information. Sections on reproductions and tips for collectors round out this comprehensive and informative study. This is NOT just another Staffordshire picture book or boring catalog of image after image. This specialized book offers so much more. The author's writing style is reader-friendly and touched by the sense of fun that Staffordshire collecting is meant to be. Synonymous with Staffordshire figures, Spaniels are the quintessential Victorian decorative accessory -- no Victorian interior is complete without at least one pair, and no collector or dealer's library is complete without this book! Enjoy!
Book should not be used to determine value of pieces!.......1998-08-29
This book contains nice photographs. However, the prices of pieces are unrealistic. Some quotes seem extremely low and other extremely high. The author doesn't mention the condition of the piece when quoting prices The greatest factor the effects the price of pottery is the condition of the piece. A price should never be given without a discription of the condition of the piece. The book would be a nice reference for a novice collector. But price information should be ignored.

This is a must have book for Am Staff owners........1998-12-07
This book is a must have for all Am Staff owners. It has information specifically for the Am Staff. Not the usual generic dog information. Jackie Frasier is a long time owner/breeder who has done it all with her Am Staffs. This book also contains information on all of the foundation kennels and the kennels of today. Great pictures of important dogs past and present. I recommend it to anyone who is interested in the American Staffordshire Terrier.

Customer Reviews:
What a great "find"!!.......2004-05-11
What a great read! This is a study of not only Staffordshire figurines but the people who made and decorated them and the life and times that these people existed within. It is a wonderful fresh social history and commentary of especially Victorian times based around ornamental objects that were produced for the masses, rather than the elite and wealthy. It is a fascinating book to read and requires on previous knowledge of the subject. Chapters include an excellent introduction to "the potteries" and the makers, modelers and decorators followed by indepth studies of predominately Victorian life as reflected by chapter headings such as Never-never land : children; rogues and renegades : the criminal element; country life : a rural romance; and entertainment : streets, spirits, sawdust, spotlights and stirrups.
The book is extremely well written and beautifully illustrated (often with previously unpublished figures). The index is prolific and all en-compassing. It is elegantly produced by the publisher Schiffer. This is a fascinating reference work that one just wants to sit down and read from cover to cover-unlike most reference books that are just "dipped into". It is not simply a catalogue of Staffordshire figures but an engaging study of the period.
Filled with Vitality and Drama.......2004-03-24
As a long-time Staffordshire collector, I was delighted when my copy of this book arrived. My personal library contains numerous Staffordshire figure catalogs and "studies," but I've never read anything like this incredible book before. The authors have brought the Staffordshire figure-making era into remarkable focus with an immediacy that takes the reader into that long-ago time when Staffordshire figures were first placed on the mantelpieces of homes and inns throughout Britain. This is clearly a book about Staffordshire's earthenware figures and groups, but it is also a book about the era in which they were crafted and the people who made and owned them 100-260 years ago. Kenny and Moriarty have gone where the "catalogers" and previous Staffordshire authors have failed to go - directly and comprehensively to the essence of the Staffordshire figure era. This is a wonderfully readable "history" book, abundantly illustrated with Staffordshire figures and groups, and filled with the vitality and drama of the dawning Industrial Age. A long forgotten potter once stated, "No art with potters can compare, we make our pots of what we potters are." It may now be said of this new and exciting book's authors, Adele Kenny and Veronica Moriarty, "No other authors can compare, they made their book of what the figures are."
A MUST-HAVE Reference.......2004-03-21
This fabulous new book has been flawlessly researched and written, generously illustrated, and elegantly produced in a hardbound edition complete with a very attractive dust jacket. It is a reference that provides inclusive historical information on the social, cultural, economic, and religious conditions that provided the backdrop for earthenware figure production in North Staffordshire from the mid-eighteenth century through 1900. In this volume, Staffordshire figures are not merely catalogued and illustrated - they are presented as historical "documents" that illustrate various aspects of British life during the time of their making. The 240-page book contains twenty chapters, an introduction, a conclusion, a very complete bibliography, and a comprehensive index. Over 565 illustrations complement text that is written in an intelligent and lively style that draws the reader into the changing, turbulent, gritty, and gutsy world of the Staffordshire figure. The authors have skillfully designed each chapter as a separate content area that may be read and savored individually or studied and enjoyed within the larger context of the whole book. Detailed captions provide descriptive data that adds to the already substantial text. The value ranges noted are honestly wide and reflect the current market. Kenny and Moriarty have created a masterwork that is destined to become a standard reference in the field.
COMPREHENSIVE, COMPELLING - A SUPERIOR BOOK.......2004-03-17
If you are looking for the WHOLE story of Staffordshire figures, this is the book for you. Written in an intelligent, literate style, here is a reference text that draws the reader into the world of Staffordshire figures as well as into the world of the potters who made them and the people who purchased them. This book presents a new reading of Staffordshire figure history through highly engaging and compelling text that is enhanced by hundreds of superb illustrations. The authors' carefully researched and insightful study is powered by the highest standards of scholarly, yet eminently reader-friendly, writing.
People's pottery wins me over.......2004-03-17
I'm an avid reader of "antiques" books, as well as being a collector of antiques. It's not very often that a book about antiques comes along that not only gives you the information you want to know about your antique, but also manages to let you into the world of the people who made that antique.
Not only did I find this work a way to help me better appreciate where the pottery of Staffordshire was coming from and why it happened when it did, but I ENJOYED reading it! The work is entertaining - a real surprise for a book about antiques. I found it a breath of fresh air for Staffordshire figure and antiques writing in general.
Congratulations to the authors. Informative and entertaining and comprehensive text and great pictures to support it.
I highly recommend this work not only to those who collect Staffordshire figurs, but to anyone interested in 19th century history and society.
