5 out of 5 stars Smooth Moves...Smooth Transition...Happy Family.......2001-06-04

I did my original review below in 2001. The year is now 2006 and we have ordered literally hundreds of copies of this book for our relocating employees. As long as this book is available, we will be ordering it long into the future. The advice is priceless.

Moving is a stressful life experience under any circumstances. Ellen Carlisle, with her delightfully easy to implement tips, has shared advice from her own life that will make the transition of moving not only easier but enjoyable for the whole family. Ellen's conversational style eases the reader through the phases of relocating--from the initial realization to the actual move and everything in between. There are even chapters to guide the caring parents as they help their teenagers and younger children through this exciting yet scary life change. Ellen deals with the necessities in a simple straightforward manner and tops everything off with encouragement that "Yes, you can do this and have fun too!" We were so impressed with Ellen's book that we ordered 200 to implement into our company relocation program. The feedback from our relocating employees has been very positive. They were thankful to have the book to guide them through the ins and outs of relocating. I would advise anyone making a move to read Smooth Moves.

1 out of 5 stars great "morale" book but very limited on nuts-and-bolts.......2000-07-18

I want to like this little (thin) tome, but it's not much help for the rent-a-truck self-mover, the family planning to rent in a new town, or the family planning to keep (and rent out) their existing home. It's a by-the-numbers book: Selling Your Home, Buying a New One, Working With the Movers. In fact, this book could have been written by your average relocating consulting firm - groups that have a lot of advice unless for people such as the author, less so for those preferring to relocate frugally. The chapters on family adjustment are informative, but with few new tips for those who've already brushed up with the much advertised online sites for relocation.

5 out of 5 stars SQUARE ON THE MONEY!.......1999-06-17

Just got to read a copy of your new book "Smooth Moves." Well done. At one point we did 9 moves in 12 years. Your insight is square on the money.

5 out of 5 stars If you are moving and you've got kids, this book is a MUST.......1999-06-12

This book hits the nail on the head. It is a MUST READ for anyone moving with children (or without) The authors real life experiences make the book entertaining as well as educational!

5 out of 5 stars Helpful, as well as comforting and informative.......1999-04-14

I found "Smooth Moves" to be a wonderful handbook for moving. It is refreshing to find a book that is written well and interesting to read on the subject of relocation. As someone who dreads packing up, but loves the thrill of a new place, I found a friend in "Smooth Moves". The information is categorized chronologically and guides the reader gently through some emotional situations. Mrs. Carlisle shares great ideas about how to handle the trauma moving can sometimes cause with ease and a whole lot of heart. Her obvious gift of optimism has given her the opportunity to learn and share the joys of moving a family. Her suggestions about including children in the move and how to make the sensitive decisions that will shape their lives are obviously heartfelt and sincere. It is calming to know that her ideas have stood the test of time with her own family. It seems to me that years of research and happiness were the catalyst for her book. I would recommend it highly to anyone who is planning to move, be it once or once a year. Happy trails!

5 out of 5 stars Stressfree Moving.......2007-04-19

Great help with complete and useful guidelines for a stressfree (or almost) move. Even though I had less than 29 days to prepare, it covered everything I needed to know. Be sure to heed the advice of the authors and don't try and take shortcuts with recommended items. Two thumbs up!

4 out of 5 stars funny..informative.......2006-02-28

good book..lots of useful information, reads good...funny... laid out to be used like a "moving journal"

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous resource and creative gift.......2005-11-18

Moving is so incredibly overwhelming! I truly wish I'd had this fabulous resource when I moved from Chicago to Las Vegas in 1999. No matter how large or small your move, moving is a pain. This book is on my "must buy" list for friends and family members planning a move. The book is well organized and full of fabulous tips and tricks to take some of the pain out of the moving process. And it's funny, too. It's obvious these womenknow what they're talking about when it comes to moving. They are experts.

5 out of 5 stars "29 Days: 2nd Edition", makes me want to move... again!.......2005-11-08

This second edition of "29 Days" is even better than the first. It contains more information and has been repackaged in an easier-to-use format and size.
The book's practical yet clever suggestions make moving simple. The budgeting section is especially helpful in keeping the spending under control. It also kept me organized with lists and "important date" reminders. This really is a great book for the person in charge of a household move. I wouldn't move without it!

5 out of 5 stars A Moving MUST!!!!.......2005-11-08

I would have had no idea what I could and could not pack in a moving van if it wasn't for this book! The worst part of moving is cleaning and sorting, and the tips in 29 Days made the process easy and helped keep me on track.
I never would have expected it, but this book had me in stitches the whole time, which made moving much more enjoyable. If I ever move again, the first thing I'll do is get out my copy of this book!

5 out of 5 stars Must-have Toolkit for Moving.......2005-02-03

This book is an amazing resource for anyone anticipating a move or just dreaming about the possibility. The personal anecdotes and lessons learned are enlightening and fun, but this is far more than just an enjoyable read. It is a comprehensive and well-organized toolkit to get you ready for and through the process of moving. The beauty of this book is that it is a working document that keeps you on track. You won't read it and put it aside--it will become your constant companion leading up to, during, and after your move. This book is invaluable--I would have been lost without it!

5 out of 5 stars Moving Made Simple.......2004-08-06

Moving can be a nerve-racking experience regardless of the situation. However, if you read "29 Days to a Smooth Move" it not only makes the whole process easier, it makes it pleasurable. The book's practical yet clever suggestions make moving simple.

This book manages to cover millions of details that I, the average mover, overlooked. Since this was my first move, the budgeting section was considerably helpful; it saved me a substantial amount of money. I would have never had the time to find all the answers to my questions without this book. While trying to decipher between which moving book to purchase, Kozik and Maras's book offered numerous unique qualities. For instance, it allowed me to stay organized through its lists and important dates portion. From this whole experience I realized there are three necessities I needed while moving cross-country; water, gas, and "29 Days to a Smooth Move".

5 out of 5 stars No other moving workbook out there!.......2004-05-29

I think that this book is unique in getting someone more organized for a move, how to pack, how to prepare budget for move, etc. It is in workbook style, thus has many checklists and charts to fill in. The only part that you would have to do more research on own is to know which moving company to choose, and to decide between professional mover vs. finding company that allows you to pack but they will drive the stuff for you vs. doing it completely on own and renting truck yourself. Most of the info that they provide may be found on websites but nicely organized and fun to read in ring-bound version. Also would have been helpful if had chapter dividers.

5 out of 5 stars moving doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg................2004-01-08

It was great to come across moving advice just at the right time in my life. I'm a single gal packing it up to try something new. After reading 29 Days to a Smooth Move and realizing I wouldn't have to sacrifice any limbs as collateral to pay for moving expenses, my plans were set in motion. I followed the book's recommendations and saved a considerable amount of money on my move.
And the chapters on saying goodbye- priceless. The suggestions made me think about how i was going to go through with it. The helpful hints made the transition a whole lot easier than i thought it would be. So, if you're planning a move, local or long distance, but might be anxious about all that goes along with the idea, this is a must read!

4 out of 5 stars SMOOTH MOVES is packed with all the right ones!.......2001-07-14

Zack Brody's back in town! After a year's absence, Zack's back in Quimby, and it's got all his former girlfriends (who've dubbed themselves The Heartbroken), in a dither.

Cathy Timmerman has just recently made her home there too, and by opening her shop for Wedneday night meetings of The Heartbroken, has become a member of the group my default, and privy to information about of Zack's legendary finesse. He loves `em and leaves `em, but seems to manage to stay on good terms with each one he's dumped. Even the one he left standing at the alter a year before?

The ladies want to give Zack a taste of his own medicine, feel the pain of rejection, and enlist Cathy's help in their sting operation. One of the heartbroken has her own agenda, but then, so does Cathy. Cathy knows Zack very well, but even as they meet, she can tell his memory of their acquaintance isn't as far reaching as hers. And she can't help getting tangled in the web of deceit that her friends have pulled her into. They dress her up, and send her out to bait him, and oh! Does she ever!

Can Cathy pull it off? Can she break Zack's heart, like all the Heartbroken expect her to? Or will she find a way to salvage her friendships, AND get her man?

Carrie Alexander pens characters that are both fun and sexy. Their depth in dealing with personal strife makes the reader privy to what drives them.

Cathy is at once timid and shy, hiding herself from a life that brought nothing but grief The Heartbroken coax her out of her cocoon, and she becomes the lovely butterfly.

Zack has always shown kindness to others; has even shouldered the blame for things not his fault. He is handsome as all get out, a true charmer, but sees Cathy for what she is: a beautiful woman. Whether she wears frumpy clothes or a hot number aimed at enticing him, he sees beneath the surface. To him, what's underneath is her appeal.

I really enjoyed Smooth Moves. Zack has that Good Boy quality that rings true for the heroine, and Cathy has that something that Zack is helpless to resist.

Ms. Alexander blends humor and serious issues that make it easy to relate to the characters, and understand their motives. Smooth Moves is faced paced and will have you not only wanting to see what moves Zack puts on Cathy, but also, what moves she puts on him!

My advice is to grab Smooth Moves...while you still can!

4 out of 5 stars bewitching and amusing small town charmer.......2001-07-11

The female population of Quimby dubbed Zachary "Heartbreak" Brody a smooth operator as Zack broke many a heart. However, most of his ladies remains fond of the rogue. Once a week, five of his former women meet to attend a craft class at Cathy Timmerman's craft shop and to compare notes as card carrying members of the Heartbroken centering on the town's legendary bad boy, who has just come home after being away for awhile.

The group agrees to teach Mr. Heartbreaker a lesson and choose newcomer Cathy as the enticement to break Zack's heart. Cathy agrees to the scheme because she remembers Zack as her champion at school when everyone taunted her for being different. She knows she loved him then and she believes she loves him now even if he fails to recognize her. However, she wonders if he will return her feelings after sampling the town's entire buffet?

SMOOTH MOVES is a bewitching and amusing small town charmer that provides plenty of entertainment due to the antics of the entire cast. The lead couple is a delight, but the secondary characters furnish depth (through gossip and other not so subtle means) that propels the enticing plot forward. Carrie Alexander smoothly moves her tale to a warm conclusion that will lead the audience to wanting more stories focusing on the residents of Quimby.

    Harriet Klausner

5 out of 5 stars Vivid and memorable! Very highly recommended.......2001-07-11

Cathy Beachball, they had called her all those years ago. Even though she discovered the gym and a dietician while in college, Cathy's wounds regarding her weight never entirely healed. Only one boy, her first crush in fifth grade, had looked beyond the exterior to see the beauty of the girl within. Cathy never forgot him.

When she moves back to Quimby to own and operate the craft store, Cathy encounters the legend surrounding the boy she remembers. Now called Heartbreak Brody, Zach dated every eligible woman in town at some point, leaving each heart broken but still friends; that is, except for Laurel. Zach supposedly left her standing at the altar, and she's vowed revenge. Now Zach's also returned to town, and Laurel has a plan.

Laurel convinces Zach's former flames to unite in an effort to help Cathy break his heart. Though she never really plans to cause him harm, Cathy can't resist the impetus that results in her transformation from dowdy to sensational. Nor can she resist the sexy Zach, with whom she almost immediately falls in love.

As the past comes unraveled, to reveal a number of undermining and manipulative threads, author Carrie Alexander turns up the Heat in SMOOTH MOVES. Zach's reputation as a "smooth operator" provides a marvelous bed of conflict, giving the plot a lively theme. With a vivid cast of characters and intense conflict, SMOOTH MOVES comes very highly recommended.

    5 out of 5 stars He's back and he's [still] bad........2001-07-08

Zack [Smooth Operator] Brody is back and the town's womenfolk are all atwitter because in his 'glory days' Zack had a penchant for romancing and then bailing out. Unfortunately, the last woman to fall victim was his bride, Laurel, who never forgave and never forgot and vows to seek revenge for the humiliation Zack put her through. She enlists the help of the town's women, who unanimously elect town newcomer & shop owner, Cathy Timmerman as the revenge tool of choice. To aid in the seduction, the women give Cathy a complete makeover. Gone are the glasses and shapeless apron dresses she wears for work. In their place are contacts and totally "glam" clothes.

But she has a secret. She may be new in town, but she's no stranger to Zack and something tells her that something's wrong with the picture Laurel is painting of Zack. And despite the new look, she's still the same woman as before, one whose doubts about Laurel's story continue to deepen as the story unfolds. On top of all this, she's had a crush on Zack since he'd rescued her years before while swimming. And so she agrees to the routine the women outlined, neglecting to tell them she has her own agenda: She has no intention of dumping Zack after the seduction. Poor Zack has no premonition of what is about to hit him.

As the story unfolds, we learn more about the disastrous wedding-day-that-wasn't, about Zack's family [especially his brother Adam & the role he played] and about Cathy's sense of justice.

It's been too long a wait for a Carrie Alexander book, but SMOOTH MOVES was well worth it. The conversations flowed fast and furiously and got more than one laugh out of me. The love scenes, in true Alexander fashion, sizzle. The hero and heroine are sympathetic characters, and the 'woman scorned' was, I felt, quite deliciously diabolical. I feel the author should make Laurel the subject of her own book and perhaps learn the true meaning of love. A bit of groveling wouldn't hurt either.

4 out of 5 stars Whew, hot stuff!!.......2001-07-07

Zachary "Heartbreak" Brody, small town bad boy, is home after a year's absence. He is also unwittingly stirring up mixed feelings in the small group of women known as the Heartbroken; Quimby's small circle of Zachary's supposedly spurned ex-girlfriends. One in particular is especially malicious and coerces the whole group into using relative newcomer, Cathy Bell Timmerman, as bait to lure Zack into his own heartbreak. Zack falls hook, line and sinker. But...even the best laid schemes sometimes go awry.

Cathy isn't quite the newcomer that the circle of Quimby gals thinks she is. Even though, as a young, insecure girl, she only spent a year in the small town, Cathy has never forgotten the boy who championed her. Now divorced with a completely different appearance, Cathy has her own agenda for rising to the challenge of seducing Zachary Brody. The start of Zack's romantic comeuppance turns into something else entirely.

SMOOTH MOVES in an enticing read of revenge, secrets and small town gossip. Carrie Alexander creates a fast-paced, tightly written story reminiscent of Peyton Place, with healthy doses of humor and witty, alluring dialogue. Cathy and Zack embark on a believable, heated romance and all of the secondary characters add flavor and nuance to a small town with character of its own. Here's hoping Ms. Alexander has many more stories up her sleeve for other characters in Quimby.

I highly recommend you put the chaise lounge in your favorite shady spot, grab a tall glass of iced tea, then sit back and enjoy the fireworks in SMOOTH MOVES!

      Book Description

Written for software managers, Managing Your Move to Object Technology clearly defines and illustrates the management implications associated with the transition to object technology. Although other books may cover the technological benefits of OT, this is one of the few to address the business management issues associated with new technology and the corporate environment. It covers what OT will do to the corporate culture, not simply what it will do for it. In frank and concise terms, the author answers questions about how an organization needs to change to make a successful migration to object technology. This book is also invaluable to organizations that have experienced difficulties with the introduction of OT. This book should be required reading for all IS and IT development managers, project leaders, and team captains who want to improve the effectiveness of the software development staff. It is also ideal for CIOs or Managing Directors who are considering object technology for future product or system development. As with any new technology, the challenge does not come from the methods or the toolsets but from an organization’s ability to embrace a new approach.

          Book Description

The game of basketball has evolved move by move, with the great players adding their signitures to every aspect of the sport. From George "The Leaning Tower of Minneapolis" Milkan's upstoppable hook shot, to Wilt "The Big Dipper" Chamberlain's ferocious slam dunk, to Michael Jordan's alley-oop, basketball has become one of the fastest, most athletic, and most crowd-pleasing sports. Smooth Moves is a full-color, fully detailed celebration of every important move on the court.

Each chapter focuses on the history of one great move (The Jump Shot, The Drive, The No-look Pass, etc.) and explores in detail the first time the move was attempted, the players who made it great, its evolution over time, and how the game has changed with its addition. Photos fill every page with examples, and sidebars relate great moments, plays and statistics. Finally, quotations from players and coaches illuminate thoughts on plays and games.
