Not bad for a few $$.......2007-07-05
I initially ordered a book from a course online, and wound up spending over $200 for that book. To be safe, I had ordered this book as well, and found this book to be superior - providing more depth of information than the other course that cost > 5x as much. It gave practice exams, on different topics, and is very good for the money. The test wound up being much easier than the tests oulined in this book (always a good thing.) Notwithstanding the merits of this book, the next Suffolk test won't be for another 4 years or so.
Not Worth It!!!.......2007-06-16
I just recently took the Suffolk County Exam last Saturday on the 9th of June, and this book was not at all helpful. The images are not clear among other things. FYI, the Suffolk County PD sends you test prep information prior to the exam (about 1 month ahead). Trust me this is all the help you will need. This book was a waste of my money!
Now that I've taken the test, the real skinny on this book's value.......2007-06-10
Now that I have taken the Suffolk County (NY) police exam, I can write a true review of how useful this study book was. The next exam may be more than 4 years away, but at least those taking that will have some help to go by!
First off, the book is broken down into sections, and offers dozens upon dozens of partial practice exams, presumably from old police exams. There are some good things about the book and some not as good, but now you'll know.
First off, the Suffolk exam, as of 2007, contains 3 parts: cognitive abilities, work styles, and life & experiences. The good part is that this book has plenty of all of those things, and if you do all the practice exams, you WILL be quite familiar with typical scenarios in all 3 sections.
The downside is that Rudman (the publisher) includes sections from what I'm presuming are other police exams. NOW HEAR THIS: the Suffolk exam DOES NOT contain the following: word analogies (SAT style), spelling, grammar, knowledge of police procedure, mathematics, or cultural/sociological info. For some reason however, this book DOES include most of those. Here's my tip: ignore them, skip over them, etc., etc. Trust me, I'm not trying to trick you. (You won't be competing against me in the next exam, god willing!)
Basically, the cognitive abilities section contains exactly what this book says it does, so trust it and do all of those parts. There's PLENTY of matching pictures of suspects, getaway cars and weapons that you have to very meticulously match. There's plenty of lists of procedures for responding to a call, where you analyze or put them in order. There are maps where you follow road routes. There are descriptions of suspects where you pick out the one who's not the same guy. Note: if you've taken NYPD, this part of Suffolk is the same as the entirety of NYPD.
Another thing there is NOT is memorization, you will not be asked to memorize a picture and answer questions based on what was in it. NYPD does that, not Suffolk.
The second part, work styles, asks you on a scale of 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree) how you feel or how you'd think about something. Examples include how your bosses would describe you, how much extra work you like taking on, how successful you were in school (HS only, Suffolk as of 2007 doesn't require college, unfortunately). Basically, if you do all the practice exams in this book, they will also serve you very well. Carefully analyze which answers in the 1-5 scale are considered the most points, and you'll begin to get a picture of how Suffolk wants a police officer to think and behave (the caveat being, don't lie...hopefully you truthfully do feel the "right" way).
Finally, the life & experiences section will ask about ethics, opinions and flirtation with both good and bad activities. Be careful and try to think like a police officer would...I can't really say more...or I'd have to charge you $400 for the Suffolk Police Study Course! Just to give one example from this section, you might see a question about seeing your best friend commit a crime. Hint: always say you'd turn so-and-so in right away.
I really hope that this review will help some people do well on the Suffolk exam next time. Now that this book is out and around, you can even get it used and save a chunk (though make sure it's not written in).
The reason I even out my review at 3 stars is that there's great content for the 3 sections of the exam, but you need to filter out the stuff that's NOT tested on this exam. Pretty much follow my advice, hopefully some others will leave some reviews here as well. Best of luck!
Good enough.......2007-05-29
I guess for a test that comes out every 4 years or so their can't be to much updating. Atleast have clear pictures, several pics are hard to exam.
I can barely answer questions made for the pictures.
Past Tests Good But..............2007-03-17
This book is comprised of past examinations Questions & Answers. The pages appear to be photocopied and set together by spiral binding and the photographs are so dark there is no way to see anything let alone details, so do not rely on it for the photo recognition and remembrance part of the test. There is no fillers to this book just tests and answers so if you looking for a "how to" book this is not the book for you. If you want a straight forward, no frills easy to use, up-to-date test prep book for the Suffolk County Police Exam [Long Island, NY] you've found your text.
Book Description
A gritty, passionate, behind-the-scenes portrait of a year in the life of Thoroughbred racing's working class, by a racetrack insider.
The great myth of horse racing is that the game is the regal and royal Sport of Kings. It isn't. Not by a long shot.
Anyone who doubts this need look no further than Suffolk Downs, a once-proud racecourse graced in its glory years by boisterous throngs and champions such as Seabiscuit. Now the blue-collar East Boston track is one of many that have fallen on hard times. These days "Sufferin' Downs" is where grizzled Thoroughbreds come to end their careers, hopeful young jockeys aspire against daunting odds to begin them, and diehard fans cheer, curse and gamble on the entire fascinating spectacle. These bit players are not just cogs of a single, struggling horse track. They are the unseen supporting cast for a $15 billion betting industry.
In fifteen years as a racing reporter and press box personality, T.D. Thornton gained access to remote corners of racetrack life off limits to the general public. He got to know the raucously Runyonesque characters and the quirky personalities of the horses; he learned the tricks of the trade from trainers, owners, and jockeys; he witnessed the tragedies and small triumphs of racing lives lived below the radar. One recent season, he finally decided to write it all down.
Not by a Long Shot is a deeply textured portrait of an industry where even the best in the business lose 75 percent of the time.

A stroll on the back stretch.......2007-09-06
For someone who knows nothing about the racing industry this is an enlightening glimpse into the mechanics, personalities and stories that come together to create the excitement of the racing industry. The outsider may see this as the "sport of kings," with all the glamour we watch at the Kentucky Derby but this is a window into the toothless, hapless, shrewd, caring varied characters on the lower scale that keep the racing industry alive. Mr Thornton's style of writing is addictive, one gets caught up in his usage of words and his turns of phrase. A picture forms in one's mind and you can begin to watch the movie in your head.
Just the Best.......2007-08-06
This is the first review I have written for an Amazon book. It is a great read written with such honesty. Hope there are more books from this author down the line.
For those who love the track.......2007-05-23
A fantastic read on one track in particuar and the entire racing industry as a whole. An important and very enjoyable read for anyone who loves the track. Thornton covers it all, from the politicians down to the wackiest track degenerates. Highly recommended for anyone who has been bitten by the racetrack bug at some point in their life.
At some point racing is going to be gone for good. This book tells us all the great things, available nowhere else, that we're going to lose.
The fascinating story of a struggling race track at the turn of a new century.......2007-05-08
Amid the glimmer and glitz, pomp and pageantry surrounding thoroughbred racing's famed Triple Crown it is very easy to forget that most of the folks who choose to make a living in the racing game toil in relative anonymity and many have a very difficult time just making ends meet. Author T.D. Thornton has been around racetracks for virtually all of his adult working life. "Not By A Long Shot: A Season At A Hard Luck Horse Track" is a story that Thornton felt really needed to be told. For only a tiny percentage of the horses, trainers and jockeys will ever see the big time. Yet without those who ply their trade at "mid-level" tracks like Suffolk Downs in Boston, Charles Town in West Virginia and Rockingham Park in New Hampshire, events like the Kentucky Derby and the Breeders Cup simply could not happen. "Not By A Long Shot" takes a look at the current state of thoroughbred racing in this country. Years in the making, "Not By A Long Shot" chronicles the 2000 spring meet at Boston's Suffolk Downs, a once proud facility now struggling to merely survive. Those who follow the sport will certainly understand what T.D. Thornton is writing about. For the rest of us, this book proves to be a real eye opener.
In the early chapters of "Not By A Long Shot" T.D. Thornton spends some time reviewing the history of thoroughbred racing in these United States. In the 1930's and 1940's thoroughbred racing was at the peak of its popularity. Enormous crowds filled the grandstands on a daily basis at major tracks across the country. Thoroughbreds like "Seabiscuit", "Whirlaway", "Citation" and "War Admiral" were household names. In this era, thoroughbred racing was not just the sport of kings but the sport of the common man as well. With the advent of television racetrack operators balked at the idea of putting their product on TV. They felt that frequent exposure on TV would adversely affect attendance and the handles at their facilities. It was a major tactical mistake. In the meantime, the major professional team sports teams gladly offered their games to the new medium and the popularity of these sports increased exponentially. And as Thornton explains the racing industry would never fully recover. Then in the 1960's and 1970's thoroughbred racing faced more stiff new competition from new state sponsored lotteries that would further diminish the sport. And now the racing industry is reeling from the vigorous competition spawned by the opening of dozens of new casinos all across the nation. Indeed, the future of live horse racing seems to be hanging in the balance.
At various points throughout "Not By A Long Shot" T.D. Thornton introduces us to a number of the colorful charactors who make up the fabric of his beloved Suffolk Downs. Readers will come to appreciate just how difficult it is for most of these folks to eke out a decent living in this business and how dangerous the sport can be as well. Thornton tells the tragic tale of top jockey Rudy Baez who was paralyzed in a serious accident during a race at Suffolk in August of 1999. In an instant his career was over and his life changed forever. Thornton also introduces his readers to many of the "Sufferin' Downs" regulars. A motley crew to say the least! At the same time Thornton gets us all up to speed with some spicy racetrack slang. Although it has been many years since I have been to the races T.D. Thornton has succeeded in whetting my appetite. I hope to visit Suffolk Downs before the current meet ends.
I found "Not By A Long Shot" to be a thoroughly entertaining read from cover to cover. T.D. Thornton is a superb writer who is extremely passionate about his subject. An excellent choice for sports fans and general readers alike. Highly recommended!
An Insider's View.......2007-04-04
I've grown up around horses, without really appreciating horse racing, except as the occasional spectator at big event races (or once or twice, as the owner of a former race horse). I found myself completely captured by the book -- not so much because I like horses, but because it brought together for me all of the reasons I worry about horse racing and yet want racing to survive because it is so much a part of the horse "world." Horses are symbols both of freedom and tragedy, as so clearly demnonstrated with this tale.
T.D. Thornton is a masterful writer who does not follow a formula. In some ways, his strong and elegant writing reminds me of another favorite writer, Tracy Kidder, as he lets the story unfold rather than forcing a snappy ending. While Publishers Weekly criticized "Not by a Long Shot" as perhaps not having a strong enough narrative line -- that was exactly what drew me in, because the story never felt contrived or fomulaic. The tale of Suffolk Downs and its cast of characters, both four footed and two (and a few whose legs no longer work) are fascinating. I both wanted to hurry to the end -- and dreaded getting to the end, because that would mean I would have to exit the stage where anything can happen, including an unexpected win from an unlikely pair or a blood chilling accident from a pair that try too hard. I deliberately refused to allow myself to look at the sporting news to see whether Suffolk Downs itself still survives today -- and I won't give away that outcome here.
I found myself eager to spend a day at my own local race track after reading this book, just to compare notes. This book is in the great tradition of memoirs, giving the reader an insider's view of a special place.
Thank you, T.D. Thornton! I'll be looking for your byline elsewhere.

Don't bother.......2002-04-30
I just read one of her previous books, A Talent for Destruction. I wasn't really crazy about that one, but I love discovering new authors, or new to me, so I read this one too. I should have stopped when I was ahead.
The "plot" involves the disappearance of a reclusive elderly couple following a bad storm. The local police almost immediately suspect the son and a former neighbor. Just when the investigation is getting rolling, a detective steals a script of the neighbors autobiography. (Which would be against any police procedure) The next 150 pages are that book! What's up with that? If you wanted to write that book, write that book. I was expecting a detective story. It was very frustrating and disappointing. I am going to avoid this author in the future.

Book Description
A.G. Dickens is the most eminent English historian of the Reformation. His books and articles have illuminated both the history and the historiography of the Reformation in England and in Germany. Late Monasticism and the Reformation contains an edition of a poignant chronicle from the eve of the Reformation and a new collection of essays. The first part of the book is a reprint of his edition of The Chronicle of Butley Priory, only previously available in a small privately financed edition which has long been out of print. The last English monastic chronicle, it extends from the early years of the sixteenth century up to the Dissolution. Besides giving an intimate portrait of the community at Butley, it reveals many details concerning the local history and personalities of Suffolk during that period. The second part contains the most important essays published by A.G. Dickens since his Reformation Studies (1982). Their themes concern such areas of current interest as the strength and geographical distribution of English Protestantism before 1558; the place of anticlericalism in the English Reformation; and Luther as a humanist. Also included are some local studies including essays on the early Protestants of Northamptonshire and on the mock battle of 1554 fought by London schoolboys over religion.

In Depth Investigation Of Britian's Roswell.......2003-09-13
Gorgina does a good job of this one. This subject has been of keen interest to me for many years now, and having read so many accounts of the Rendlesham case, this one is the most sober account I have so far read. It brings out new accounts from the U.S. Airmen, based at RAF Bentwaters and Woodbridge, in the early eighties. A good investigative account by all means, backed up by new facts. Since the book was published the UK government has released documents proving they were interested in this case. A Great read about an ongoing event
Highly recommended.

Jane Grey fan.......2006-03-29
I read this book almost 20 years ago, when I rented it from my local library. "Lady Jane Grey and the House of Suffolk" is so much better than Plowden's sequel "Lady Jane Grey: Nine Days Queen" that it shows "Nine Days Queen" as the tired rehash that it is. "Lady Jane Grey and the House of Suffolk" describes Jane beautifully. It also gives plenty of information about her parents, Frances and Henry Grey, and her two younger sisters, Catherine and Mary. Jane's life with her family and her royal Tudor relatives, her subsequent marriage to Guilford Dudley, her brief nine-day reign as England's unwanted Queen, and her following trial and execution are well covered. "Lady Jane Grey and the House of Suffolk" also tells what happened to Jane's surviving family members following her death. This book I'd heartily recommend to anybody who wants a good account of Lady Jane Grey, her life, and her ultimate fate.
Very high quality popular history.......2001-08-02
Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk, was not only the brother-in-law of Henry VIII but also his best friend; after the king's own children, Brandon's descendants were named heirs to the crown. The duke's granddaughter, Jane Grey, died for her legacy at the age of sixteen, a Protestant intellectual challenging the accession of the Catholic Mary Tudor. Jane's sister Catherine subsequently ruined her chances to become heir-presumptive to Elizabeth I by her unauthorized marriage to the earl of Hertford -- and then by presuming to give birth to a healthy son (seven of whose close relatives lay buried headless under the chapel in the Tower where he was christened). The Suffolk drama would have been a fitting subject for a Shakespear-ean tragedy.
So close,yet so far............2001-06-16
This book concentrates too much about Lady Jane Grey. I know it is called "LADY JANE GREY and the House of Suffolk", but the parts about Jane aren't detailed enough to be a biography, and the rest is too short and foggy to be read as an equal family saga.So close, yet so far.
Yes,lots of Jane Grey-but what about poor Eleanor Brandon?.......2001-05-14
It is really helpful in describing and understanding the Tudor period, but it's unbalanced.1 page on Mary Grey,2 chapters on the French Queen,Mary Tudor,1 paragragh on Frances Brandon. There's this uneveness.
Fascinating Study of Tudor England.......2001-05-07
Author Plowden is very well known for her books concerning the Tudor dynasty of England. This book traces the story of Henry VIII's sister, Mary who first wed the elderly King of France. Upon his swift demise, Mary pursued and won the man she wanted, Charles Brandon. For a while she was banned from court for daring to marry for love, instead of dynastic reasons. From this marriage, her offspring and their descendants would be tightly controlled by the subsequent Tudor monarchs, Edward V, Mary I and Elizabeth I.
While focusing on primarily Lady Jane Grey, the granddaughter of Mary Tudor, all other descendants (primarily female) are also discussed. The complication succession to the throne made a minefield which ruined many lives.
The book is very well written and quotes extensively from original sources. I would recommend it and any other Plowden books to anyone interested in Tudor England.
