Product Description
"Houses of the Berkshires" surveys 35 of the most renowned resort estates of Lenox and Stockbridge, Massachusetts, designed by nationally-known firms, including McKim, Mead & White, Carrere and Hastings, and Frederick Law Olmsted. The client list included lawyer and Ambassador Joseph Choate, inventor George Westinghouse, and novelist-social observer Edith Wharton. Illustrated with over 300 archival photographs and floor plans, the book uniquely chronicles a distinctive social and literary colony and now vanished way of life.

Beautiful book.......2007-07-24
A beautiful book, beautifully written, about a memorable part of American history, architectural and otherwise.
BERKSHIRES.......2006-05-06
Acanthus is the gold standard publisher of books of this kind and their latest book does not disappoint. Mr. White does a supurb job of selecting wonderful images of these amazing estates and his research is scholarly and highly informative. If you appreciate beautifully crafted books on Gilded Age residential architecture, then I can't imagine you not loving this book. I have never had the pleasure of visiting the Bershires, so I guess this will have to be the next best thing to experiencing in person.
Rebuttal to Mr. Millen.......2006-04-20
Mr. Millen brings up some criticisms that are valid but are misplaced. This is not an ENTIRELY fresh view of the Berkshires but local authors Gilder and Jackson bring to light much fresh architectural and social history. Also, they have found a number of previously unpublished photographs that delight, such as the early view of Naumkeag that appears inside and on the back cover. Ms. Owen's work was groundbreaking, but this work supercedes it, particularly in the great production values for which this publisher is famous.
Most curious about Mr. Millen's criticism is his desire to see the houses in mid-century ruin. There is romance in ruin, but this exquisite book's goal was to show these great estates in their glory days. Perhaps he should approach the publisher to produce his very own "Berkshires in Ruins" volume. That might indeed be a charming tome and one I would consider buying.
I highly recommend this book as an intelligent and distinctive coverage of the great houses of Lenox and Stockbridge and environs.
Well done but not an entirely fresh view of the Berkshires.......2006-04-20
I found this to be a well researched and mostly through book covering a wide selection of architectural examples from the Berkshires. It has a good mix of numerous previously published historical photos (the Lenox Library put out a photography book of note, too) but also many photos I have not seen before. While many of the properties are still standing today few of the photographs used are current, which is a shame, and fewer still are from the middle of the last century.
The title is more sterile in comparison to the almost Bible-like reference on the Berkshire estates, Carole Owens' "Berkshires Cottages: A Vanishing Era" from 1984. The Owens title came out when architecturally the "Inland Newport" was just starting to awaken from years of abuse and neglect of many of these delightful white elephants of the Gilded Age. Now this title, "Houses of the Berkshires", is being released when the area couldn't be any more desirable and vibrant with almost none of the remaining and covered Berkshires `cottages' in any state of disrepair. A large exception is the in-restoration Rotch & Tilden designed Ventfort Hall. It would be nice, as a means to better appreciate these homes, to also share in such a book as this the state to which many of these homes sank before they rebounded to the condition they are in today.
The book is more brief then I'd prefer on some homes, but often those noted residences have been far better covered in books devoted to the architect or the family. Case in point, Elm Court was best detailed in the 1991 book "The Vanderbilts and the Gilded Age: Architectural Aspirations, 1879-1901" and High Lawn in the 2003 title, "The Architecture of Delano & Aldrich". Although the latter seems to be a place forever cloaked in mystery matching its beautiful fa?ade and vast feudal landholdings.
Published by Acanthus Press who republished the brilliant architect Harrie Thomas Lindeberg's 1940 original "Domestic Architecture" as well as an assortment of reflective regional focused titles with areas of wealth and architectural significance. Among those titles is the delightful "The Main Line: Country Houses of Philadelphia's Storied Suburb, 1870-1930". This book is recommendable for those who enjoy grand domestic architecture mated with true landscaping skill which should be preserved and harkens back to a time when having money did result in good taste - at least for the Berkshires.

Praise for Damn Right!
From the author of the bestselling WARREN BUFFETT SPEAKS. . .
"Charlie Munger, whose reputation is deep and wide, based on an extraordinary record of brilliantly successful business strategies, sees things that others don't. There is a method to his mastery and, through this book, we get a chance to learn about this rare individual." -MICHAEL EISNER, Chairman and CEO, The Walt Disney Company
"Janet Lowe uncovers the iconoclastic genius and subtle charm behind Charlie Munger's curmudgeonly facade in this richly woven portrait of our era's heir to Ben Franklin. With a biographer's detachment, an historian's thoroughness, and a financial writer's common sense, Lowe produces a riveting account of the family, personal, and business life of the idiosyncratically complex and endlessly fascinating figure." -LAWRENCE CUNNINGHAM, Cardozo Law School, Author of The Essays of Warren Buffett: Lessons for Corporate America
"For years, Berkshire Hathaway shareholders and investors worldwide (me included) have struggled to learn more about Warren Buffett's cerebral sidekick. Now we can rest and enjoy reading Janet Lowe's book about this rare intellectual jewel called Charlie Munger." -ROBERT G. HAGSTROM, Author of The Warren Buffett Way
"Charlie has lived by the creed that one should live a life that doesn't need explaining. But his life should be explained. In a city where heroism is too often confused with celebrity, Charlie is a true hero and mentor. He lives the life lessons that he has studiously extracted from other true heroes and mentors, from Ben Franklin to Ben Graham. This book illuminates those life lessons." -RONALD L. OLSON, Munger, Tolles & Olson llp
"Janet Lowe's unprecedented access to Charlie Munger and Warren Buffett has resulted in a first-class book that investors, academics, and CEOs will find entertaining and highly useful."-TIMOTHY P. VICK, Money Manager and Author of How to Pick Stocks Like Warren Buffett

Dam Right!.......2007-07-03
This book gave me insight into lives and thinking of both Charley Munger and Warren Buffett. It contains important information for Berkshire Hathaway students and fans.
Must read book.......2007-05-18
The book brings out the mysterious personality of Charlie Munger and his progress as an investor. It is not a book to read if you want to learn Charlie's approach to investing but can be a great guide if you want to model your life on the likes of Charlie and Buffett. It gives insights into the mind of two great people who have had the courage to stand against one and all when they thought they were right.
light reading........2007-02-18
i don't typically write reviews, though it is alway nice to contribute. having read quite a few excepts from other books about Mr Munger i was blown away by his simple straight forward logic. It really does put alot of education that we are receiving today into context. I have often challenged my old Marketing Profs. during my MBA etc, to try and explain what makes coke work. None are able to do it in the way that munger can. This book will not give you those insights, though from what i got out of it, it gives you an understanding into the environment and upbringing he had to dervive these thoughts.
It is a good read, sometimes abit fluffy with wording, though you get over this. If you are a Berkshire fan - apart form the annual reports and compilations (ie. Cunningham) the best book by far is Of Permanent Value.
Anyway enjoy and as i said it is a nice light read.
Snore fest.......2007-02-07
Charlie told her it would be a boring book and as usual he was Damn Right!
You know this is a guy with interesting biz and fishing tales Im sure that could have been weaved into something good. The author's problem is she got so caught up in trying to write a time line of every little fact without much in the way of editing nor narrative. Its like fact vomit. Read this if your sleeping pills fail you.
Little Investment Help Here .......2007-01-30
A decent biography of Charlie Munger if you are interested in his life and family. However, as an investor, I had hoped for more insight into his investment philosophy. If that's your focus you'll find this book disappointing. You are probably better off chasing down his various letters written to shareholders over the years for that type of information. Still, the book is well-written and well-researched and interesting if you are a biography junkie. I'm not.
Book Description
Many people throughout the world use the King James Version, and it remains the most widely known and quoted version of the Bible. For regular daily reading, many people like to carry with them a copy of the New Testament, which will fit easily into their pocket. This New Testament offers a larger-than-average print, yet it is still easy to carry. It is bound in soft Berkshire leather, with gilt blocking and edges. The words of Jesus are printed in red.

Fantastic foliage.......2000-09-26
I'm originally from Western Massachusetts now living in Northern California and recently went back to the Berkshires for a visit. This book was in every room of the large resort we stayed at and I immediately went and purchased my own copy at the gift shop. There are amazing seasonal pictures of the entire Berkshires region along with some of the authors commentary and local history. If you have ever been to the Berkshires in Mass, this publication will take you back and if you've never had the opportunity to travel there you'll feel as if you did after thumbing through the book.
Book Description
" Everyone knows Warren is the greatest investor of our time. . . .This book for the first time captures his genius as a manager." -- Jack Welch
The first book to reveal the investment and management strategies of the Berkshire Hathaway all-star management team. Much has been written about Warren Buffett and his investment philosophy; little has been made public about the inside management of Berkshire Hathaway. With a market cap exceeding 100 billion , Berkshire Hathaway has a market value surpassing many icons of American business such as Dell, AT&T, Disney, Ford, Gillette, American Express, and GM. Drawing on his personal experiences as well as those of Berkshire's chief executives, officers, and directors interviewed for this book, Berkshire insider Robert P. Miles provides a unique look at the Berkshire Hathaway culture and its management principles.

BUFFETT RULES.......2007-07-07
Warren Buffett is the god of investors. Thus, there's a plethora of books about him and his investing methods. Reading anything Buffett says is good. My concern with these books is they become dated very fast. For example, right now, in mid 2007, Warren is buying up railroad stocks, specifically Burlington Northern. Yet we don't glean that from this book, because it went to print before Warren got into RR's.
I've read most of the Buffett books and this one is above average. Recommended.
Also, for those desiring to become rich, check out Tom Stanley's "The Millionaire Mind."The Millionaire Mind
Interesting stories.......2007-07-03
The book has a lot of interesting stories about managers at Berkshire Hathaway. It's not much about Warren Buffett. And it has nothing to do with investment.
Highly Recommended!.......2004-06-08
Robert Miles knows Warren Buffett, and it's clear that he also knows a thing or two about the people who run the companies in Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway. Armed with information gleaned from eight months of intensive interviews, Miles uncovers what makes a Berkshire manager tick, and covers the workings of Berkshire, itself, as well. Writing through the voices of the CEOs he portrays, Miles skillfully weaves the colorful histories of 18 firms into a revealing set of success stories. Many tales are similar - the CEOs love their companies; they worked hard to build solid businesses and no one regrets selling his firm to Berkshire. They all sound genuinely happier than you might possibly believe, and each chapter has business models you shouldn't miss. We invite any executive to enter these pages for an insider's view (still, it doesn't hurt to remember, they all knew Warren was gonna read it).
A Pedestrian Book Saved Only by the Managers Themselves.......2003-12-27
Thank goodness Berkshire Hathaway is populated by so much management talent. Even Robert Miles' mediocre writing and pedestrian insights can't obscure the real value of this book, which is to document, in a detailed and therefore fairly convincing way, Warren Buffett's exceptional ability to choose and motivate people.
Buffett's techniques for dealing with people are well-known (he talks about them constantly) and this book has almost nothing really new to reveal, but Berkshire junkies will enjoy the anecdotes and facts that bring Buffett's concepts to life in a more concrete way. Even though many of the stories are recycled, hearing a few of the managers speak in their own words and tell their own versions is revealing. That Buffett himself made a kind remark about this book is unremarkable. What else could he possibly say about a book that features some of his key people? Bottom line: this is definitely a book for those already familiar with, and enthusiastic about, Buffett.
Miles' publisher, Wylie, has created a virtual industry out of quickie trade books about Buffett. Wylie's new twist in this book is the Berkshire managers, who provide whatever shine it emits. But somewhere along the way, a mighty big assist must have been delivered on the editorial end to tone the writing style down into something publishable. How so? Miles himself comes across as one of the most self-aggrandizing, uber-promotional, un-Buffett-like people imaginable. That someone could write about Warren Buffett, with seemingly so little concept of what the man is about, is amazing. It wouldn't be the first time Buffett's name has been exploited by someone who barely knows him, but Miles takes exploitation to a whole new extreme. The Robert Miles web page, which reminds one of a three-card monte dealer or perhaps, one of the more gelatinous used car salesman types, speaks for itself. The headline, "You May Never Meet Warren Buffett, But Hear Robert P. Miles Speak and You'll Feel Like You Have" says it all. If you want to read a book about the value of humility by an author who has the nerve to compare himself to Warren Buffett, well, this is that book.

Another Disappointment.......2007-09-13
I've read other Jennifer Coburn books and been sorely disappointed, but I decided to give this one a chance because everyone raves about her as though she is a great author. Obviously a mistake and a waste of money. This book had no plot - none at all. A pushy, self-centered, drama-queen mother does not make for a plot. I had to force myself to finish this book (which I only did because I was on vacation and did not have other readily available options), and when I did, I was kicking myself for buying it. If you want to read a plot-less book with yet again, unlikeable characters, then this is the book for you. Otherwise, I'd recommend one of the other, better chick lit authors such as Meg Cabot, Jennifer Weiner, Jane Green, Marian Keyes, etc... Really just about anyone.
I didn't love this..........2007-08-14
I am usually a fan of Jennifer Coburn - and read The Queen Gene last weekend. It is a fast read, like her others - but not so funny or clever.
Skip this one. There is better stuff out there to read during your precious free time.
Easily my favorite Jennifer Coburn book.......2007-07-29
This my second Jennifer Coburn book and, in my opinion, the best so far. The characters are great (Anjoli being my personal favorite), the dialogue funny and the story line engaging. I liked the characters so much, "Tales from the Crib" will be my next read.
Great Book Fantastic Author.......2007-04-06
Jennifer Coburn excels again in another one of her nutty novels filled with ghosts, a neurotic mother with a teacup dog that lives in her purse, and shaved private parts! She is fantastically witty and smart and I couldn't put her book down. Opening the art colony was just the beginning for our heroin of the story as she deals with feelings for another artist and some unbelievably crazy guests in her house. Definitely another must read!
Neurotic New Age Fun.......2007-03-26
Jennifer Coburn fans have much to chortle about with the arrival of her latest. While The Queen Gene is ostensibly a sequel to Tales From the Crib, it stands on its own quite well. I think it's her best work yet.
Lucy is a woman in the middle. Raising her toddler while at the same time founding an artists colony with her husband, she's reached that point in life when a woman gives and nurtures to all generations that surround her. This book focuses on Lucy's self-absorbed au courant mother, Anjoli, who apparently has never nurtured anything beyond her own desires and who has a fascination with the trendy and the spiritual. Well, the spiritually trendy at least. Think Edina Monsoon, only better dressed.
Anjoli tends to suck the energy out of any room she enters, and so it's little surprise that her latest acquisition, Paz the handbag Chihuahua, suffers from neuroses and must endure therapy from every quack healer in the known new age universe. As Paz subconsciously signals for help while purse bound by pressing the redial button on Anjoli's cell phone, Lucy hears much more of the details of her mother's life than she wishes to know. Sex with the Pilates instructor. Machinations involving real estate purchases even as the current owner's dead body is still being wrapped up by the paramedics. Yikes.
Add the notion of an art colony which immediately kills the muse of all who enter, an elderly Floridian auntie who is fascinated with strippers and today's methods of bikini waxage (aka the daily Snatch Report), and a nude wedding that clashes with the art colony open house and you get a sense of Lucy's dizzying difficulties. Indeed, depilation is a recurrent theme in this volume. Paz pulls out his fur, Bernice attends to her octogenarian pubic area, brides are rhinestoned in unusual places for the sake of modesty, and Lucy herself is about to pull her hair out in frustration at the chaos that surrounds her.
This is a great little read, and heartily recommended. I have it on confidential communiqué that the next Coburn book will be even more outrageous and satiric, so read this one now, and whet your appetite in anticipation. There is much more to come, and we shall all be laughing.

One day Robert Miles showed up on The Motley Fool's discussion boards as "simpleinvestor" and began a series of posts entitled "101 Reasons to Own Berkshire Hathaway." The result: 101 Reasons to Own the World's Greatest Investment. If you've ever considered buying shares of BRK.A or BRK.B, then definitely buy this book. If not, then you might want to consider getting a copy anyway, as Miles clearly demonstrates why Berkshire Hathaway is one of the best investments going. --Harry C. Edwards
Book Description
Discover why the model-investment-firm-turned-household-word is the perfect investment--for virtually anyone
Robert Miles is a successful entrepreneur, business owner, and investor who believes that everyone can be a smarter investor regardless of background, education, and income. In fact Miles says that one investment is ideal for virtually everyone to own--Berkshire-Hathaway. Miles has attended the annual shareholders meeting for years, has met Warren Buffett, and is considered a company "insider" and Berkshire-Hathaway expert. In 101 Reasons to Own the World's Greatest Investment, Miles offers his insights into what makes Berkshire-Hathaway so profitable and why shareholders get such value for owning the stock. Among his explanations: Berkshire-Hathaway is run sensibly and frugally by Buffett--there are no lavish corporate head-quarters or extravagant spending by company executives. The company invests in companies it determines will produce steady profits for the shareholders rather than those companies with a history of erratic performance. This accessible, well-researched look at the leading company's investment strategy has received an "unofficial" endorsement by Buffett himself.
Robert P. Miles (Tampa, FL) is an entrepreneur and owns a small business. He is a graduate of the University of Michigan Business School, has been an active shareholder of Berkshire-Hathaway for a number of years, and is frequently asked to speak to other investor groups about Buffett.

Reason 102: buy 101 and invest with confidence.......2002-04-24
I just finished reading the 101 Reasons for owning Berkshire Hathaway book and found it very educational, enlightening, and exciting. Congratulations to Robert P. Miles on this outstanding contribution to our investment education and the clever way he made his points and presentation. I wish I had known its contents and wise counsel 30 years ago!

Investor Robert P. Miles tells you everything you ever wanted to know about Warren Buffett's legendary Berkshire Hathaway. The company's plain-living, financial wizard of a chairman dominates this inventive and informative inside tour. The format - a listing of 101 reasons to own the stock - enables Miles to deliver a massive amount of information. Each entry is straightforward, packed with plenty of supportive data and a lively read. We from [...] recommend this book to investors and to anyone who'd like to know more about Buffett and Berkshire Hathaway, the only stock that comes with an owner's manual.
Investment for Idiots.......2001-11-29
(...) This is a loathesome. disagreeable book to anyone with even a smidgen of investment knowledge. Warren Buffet should be ashamed. I felt I was reading an Amway treatise with "Berkshire Hathaway" substituted for "Amway". I can't tell you how many times I read the phrase "til death do you part". I got news for all you people investing in the market - that's just the way to get really burned. This isn't a marriage, it's a business decision, one that should be constantly reevaluated. And if you're going to hold it forever, and never sell, then yes, of course, you needn't ever think about it again. It might as well be a priceless family heirloom , not for sale at any price. This book just made me plain angry. I was looking to actually learn something about Warren Buffet and Berkshire Hathway; instead all I ever learned about was Miles' undying devotion, and unquestioning mindset. It does have a good list of investment web sites. Not worth the price of the book, however.
Barnum was right!.......2001-11-27
Robert P. Miles, aka simple investor, has written the worst book about Warren Buffett imaginable. I read all this when it first appeared on the Berkshire Chatter Board & was appalled at the following he developed. I bought his book becase I am always interested in disasters. Mr. Miles may be the nicest man in the world but he is without doubt the worst writer. The great thing about America is anybody can be anything: Mr. Miles wanted to be a writer & he is: yes indeed, Mr. Barnum was right! I wish the rating system went to minus 5. The worst thing is, now Mr. Miles has written a second book & I must buy it to see if he remains the world's worst writer. Sincerely, Mike
Read the Book/Bought the Stock.......2001-07-10
Enjoyed this book and came to the conclusion that I had to buy the stock. Looking for a safe, value investment for the long term and his book explained clearly why you should buy Bershire Hathaway stock instead of a mutual fund. Preordered the author's next book on Warren Buffett.

Book Description
When a small group of women set out to march to Greenham one summer day at the end of August 1981, none of them could have imagined that this outing would change their lives forever. Nor did they dream that their gesture that day would spark off a feminist protest movement that would last for decades spreading its influence across the world. This highly entertaining and evocative history of the common traces the development of the protests from the summer of that year through the climax of the Cold War to the present day. It is a quintessentially English tale in which a disparate group of dedicated and sometimes fractious women confront the full military might of the United States, not only to raise their voices against nuclear weapons but also to safeguard the ancient customs and rights of common ground. As alive to the women’s concerns as to the wider political implications, Fairhall paints a vivid picture of life at Greenham, from the challenges and frustrations of the night time raids and appearances in court to the exuberant self-expression of the camps at the various rainbow-coloured Gates. More recently, he shows how the respectable residents of Newbury, where the women were often given such a hostile reception, have used the same laws exploited by the women in their own fight to restore the ancient rights of public access to the common and protect it as open heathland for future generations. The protests at Greenham Common are a powerful symbol of the 20th century which still arouse strong feelings today. There are many "Greenham women" still around. But what did they really achieve? As public concern focuses both on the proliferation of modern weapons of mass destruction and the need to preserve the threatened British landscape, this is a timely moment to consider their legacy.

AMERICAN GARDENS.......2006-09-28
Acanthus Press puts out the most beautiful books and this one does not disappoint. Garden's of the american aristocracy of the northeast and midwest are put on display with gorgeous images to accompany the scholarly text. These gardens are breathtaking and though layed out many years ago, they resonate today; true beauty is eternal I suppose. I highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in formal gardens of the Gatsby set or frankly to anyone with a love for beautiful things. A gorgeous book on a gorgeous subject, another great book from Acanthus Press.
Book Description
This is the fifth edition of a well-established textbook. It is intended to provide a thorough coverage of the fundamental principles and techniques of classical mechanics, an old subject that is at the base of all of physics, but in which there has also in recent years been rapid development. The book is aimed at undergraduate students of physics and applied mathematics. It emphasizes the basic principles, and aims to progress rapidly to the point of being able to handle physically and mathematically interesting problems, without getting bogged down in excessive formalism. Lagrangian methods are introduced at a relatively early stage, to get students to appreciate their use in simple contexts. Later chapters use Lagrangian and Hamiltonian methods extensively, but in a way that aims to be accessible to undergraduates, while including modern developments at the appropriate level of detail. The subject has been developed considerably recently while retaining a truly central role for all students of physics and applied mathematics.
This edition retains all the main features of the fourth edition, including the two chapters on geometry of dynamical systems and on order and chaos, and the new appendices on conics and on dynamical systems near a critical point. The material has been somewhat expanded, in particular to contrast continuous and discrete behaviours. A further appendix has been added on routes to chaos (period-doubling) and related discrete maps. The new edition has also been revised to give more emphasis to specific examples worked out in detail.
Key features of the new edition include:
Further development of the chapters on dynamical systems and their geometry, and on order and chaos, introduced in the fourth edition.
Examples with solutions in the text, supplementing the wide range of problems with answers.
Appendices on vectors, on conic sections, on dynamical systems near a critical point and, new in this edition, on routes to chaos and related discrete maps.
Emphasis on basic principles of wide applicability.
End-of-chapter summaries.
A comprehensive index and list of symbols.
Classical Mechanics is written for undergraduate students of physics or applied mathematics. It assumes some basic prior knowledge of the fundamental concepts and reasonable familiarity with elementary differential and integral calculus.
Customer Reviews:
Great book for those needing a good physics reference.......2007-01-10
This book covers a huge amount of classic physics techniques and theories. I bought it for the Hamiltonian section but I really like reading it. Note - I am not a physicist but I have a masters in math and do a lot of reading for amusement in physics of all kinds.
