2 out of 5 stars Erros and lack of details make this a poor engineering reference.......2007-08-17

I was looking for a book on WiMax as a reference for designing WiMax radios. Trying to understand WiMax by reading the IEEE 802.16, 16e standards is difficult. The original 802.16-2004 standard was organized in a convoluted way. On top of that there were numerous errors, even in the mathematical formula and the critical system parameters. 16e was written as a errata and addendum to .16. Given the amount of major changes required by .16e, this format of a .16+.16e makes it almost impossible to read to gain engineering understanding. I was looking for a book that could untangle this mess and present the information in .16+.16e in a linear and logical way, if not the MAC, at least the PHYs. The Andrews book does not serve this purpose. Most of the technical details of the WiMax system are missing. For example, a WiMax radio starts with transmitting or receiving the preambles. There are hundreds of preambles in WiMax. I would expect the book to describe all these preambles for reference. It would be even better, if there are insights into the mathematical properties of these preambles for the receiver design. If you agree with my statement, just let me say that the Andrews book contains none of the details the preambles beyond saying WiMax has something called preamble. Of the limited amount of PHY details the book did contain, there are critical errors. For example, the book seems to suggest that the downlink PUSC subchannels consist of two chunks of contiguous OFDM subcarriers of 14 each. According to the 802.16/16e, the 28 subcarriers in a subchannel are scattered. For the lack of details, I feel this book serves poorly as an engineering design reference. It also serves poorly as a guide to untangle the material in IEE802.16/16e due to the lack of details and the critical errors.

4 out of 5 stars $69.99 buys you depth.......2007-05-29

As of May 28 2007, if you are going to fork some money onto a WiMax book, this book should be it. The authors were smart to concentrate in explaining the technology building blocks of the standard instead of just following the structure of the 802.16 document. I have read mostly the chapters related to the PHY and I found the explanations and examples clear and to the point. Even if you are not interested in the WiMax standard per se, this book contains very good information about OFDM/OFDMA and multi-antenna techniques for broadband wireless systems. It also has a couple of chapters about link level and system level performance of WiMax that add even more depth to the book.

4 out of 5 stars Good overall introduction to IEEE 802.16 technology.......2007-05-26

For those looking for an overview of IEEE 802.16 technology, or for those looking to come up to speed after a period of absence such as me, this is a good book.

4 out of 5 stars an engineer's book.......2007-05-15

Andrews suggests in the Preface that the book will be suited to a wide range of people who want to learn about WiMax. From engineers to graduate students to managers and executives and others. Indeed, there are high level descriptions, scattered throughout the chapters, accessible to those without an engineering degree. But typically, these are introductory summary remarks. The bulk of every chapter is really best understood if you have that engineering background. While the author naturally desires as wide an audience as possible, this is really an engineer's book.

The overviews do show that WiMax exhibits strong advantages over the current and popular WiFi. Like having robust security protocols, including the Advanced Encryption Standard (aka Rijndael) and 3DES. Plus WiMax has terminals that possess built-in digital certificates with public and private keys and MAC addresses. Contrast this with WiFi, whose commonly used Wireless Encryption Protocol has some severe deficiencies.

Another important advantage of WiMax is how it supports extreme mobility modalities. Where you, the end user, can travel in a vehicle up to 120 kmph, and have seamless handoff between WiMax basestations.

Many chapters are highly mathematical. Indeed, one chapter on multi-antennas reads like an excursion into advanced linear algebra or matrix theory. It even evokes the Frobenius norm of a matrix, which I'd only ever seen before in a pure maths course.

Of all the chapters, maybe that which discusses Mobile IP could be the most interesting. It takes the Internet as we know it, and removes a serious current limitation to moving your machine, and having it keep connected to the Internet. Mobile IP is a cunning overlay on IPv4. While it can also be done, and much easier, in IPv6. The only problem is when the latter will start to dominate v4.

Overall, the book is a very promising pitch for WiMax deployment.

5 out of 5 stars Network textbook.......2006-10-10

This is a great book for learning the CCNA material. It will teach you all of the major points that you need to study to pass the exam. Even if you are not taking the exam and just want information on how networks are designed, this is the book. I found it a good read and the practice CD was priceless in learning how to issue commands to the various Cisco routers. A great book and worth the money too!!!

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing and frustrating.......2005-12-05

For the last 3 years I would have sworn by Todd Lammle's CCNA Study Guides; mainly do to his free-hearted writing style that seem to add an element of humor to complex reads. However, this book has far too many errors and lacked technical intensity. In the past, I used Todd's 607 Study Guide to pass the archived 607 exam on the first try. Two and half years later, I purchased the 801 Study Guide with the same enthusiasm. After reading this book twice, taking all 8 bonus exams repeatedly, and exhausting the capabilities of the simulation software, I took the comprehensive 801 exam this weekend and did not pass! My exam had multiple questions that were not covered in Lammle's book. Not to mention the lack of coverage of NAT, that seems to magically show up on my exam. None of which was covered with enough detail within this book. Moreover, the Virtual Lab was not exhaustive and far too basic (No OSPF, EIGRP or NAT simulation capabilities). In my opinion, this is not acceptable. Especially when I was faced with these topics through out my exam. I wish this book did a better job of pinpointing the areas that were and would be crucial on the exam. Although Todd Lammle attempted to do place emphasis on certain points, none of those points showed up on test day. Obviously, Cisco has made the exam harder to achieve by reading materials alone (even there own text). Therefore, accurate and thought-provoking supplemental materials are a must!!The bonus questions simply repeat themselves over-and-over again. The book as a whole lacked coverage on crucial technologies and is filled with confusing statements and answers that turn out to be mistakes- Go figure! All of which, led me to give this book 3 stars (maybe closer to 2 1/2).

2 out of 5 stars big disapointment...........2005-11-18

Mr. Lammle is still an excellent teacher/writer (the best), but the omission of some crucial material is a setup for test disaster. In particular there is little information on NAT, and zero configuration examples. 4 months ago I recertified on the CCNA and one of the simulation questions was NAT configuration and at least 3 multiple choice were on NAT router commands. I am now tutoring 4 other engineers using this book and we've had to use Cisco Press books to cover NAT and other material that is missing. The Simulator in this book will not do OSPF and EIGRP (both crucial, so we bought Mr. Lammle's routersim from www.routersim.com, this does allow these routing protocols, but VTP doesn't work correctly with the simulator switches. In hindsight I would definitely use Cisco Press now, it doesn't appear that Sybex is keeping up. The Cisco books aren't as well written or real world, but they have everything you need to pass the test.

4 out of 5 stars Well written, Full coverage of all topics except NAT/PAT.......2005-11-10

The author has done a good job in writing the book, which provides detailed explanation of all the topics covered in the exam except for NAT/PAT, which is an important objective of the CCNA exam and you can hardly find one CCNA exam that doesn't test your knowledge in that area.

More enhancements on how OSPF works is needed, since it's not covered clearly in the book.

Other than that the book is enough to pass the test except for the points I discussed previously.

One more thing, the bounce exams found in the study tools CD are very workable, never skip them you may encounter the same questions in the exam. I did!

Very tiny book. I was not expecting such a small book. Very expensive item for its size.
Book arrived with a grease stain on the cover!

4 out of 5 stars Handy Reference, Perfect for Training Seminar.......2007-01-13

If I had to give a 1-2 day seminar on the subject, this would be a handy handbook. For that purpose, it should be used, not as a general reference on lean manufacturing.

If this review was helpful, please add your vote. Thanks.

4 out of 5 stars The Lean Manufacturing Handbook.......2007-01-09

I purchased this handbook to be used as a quick reference guide and as part training aid when I talk to my Clients in the manufacturing sector. It has completely satisfied these requirements and the other factor that appealed was its true "pocket" size.

4 out of 5 stars Lean .......2006-08-28

Delighted with this book. Firstly it's size is great as when you are on the Gemba (Floor) you can have this in your back pocket and referance it when needed. It goes through the various concepts of Lean in an easy format and then explains the techniques. As a Lean BlackBelt myself, it's a great tool to use in every day situations.

This is a must for every accounts dept. It gives you a fresh and concise look at developing your accounts dept and company as a whole.
Lots of ideas to think about, easy to read and understand. Even step by step lists that you can follow.
I would recommend this book to anyone from a trainee accoutant to FCO's it throws out the old way of looking at things and brings in a new and exciting way of thinking about the bigger picture.
As accountants we are very happy to plod along with our wonderful spreadsheets, this helps you look at better ways of working.

5 out of 5 stars Everything it promised to be.......2007-07-24

It promised key performance indicators and it actually provided them. Easy to read, good format.

3 out of 5 stars KPI Usability Review.......2007-07-05

I found this book to be reasonably helpful. There are lists and lists of key performance indicators in the back of the book. There was one story in particular (won't give it away for all of you who want the book) that was particularly good and I have started sharing that example in my work (Six Sigma). All in all, I think I am looking for more of the "how to do it," which I found this book to be a little light on. . . . . .

4 out of 5 stars A rational methodology to implement KPIs.......2007-07-03

The main purpose of this book is to be a practical methodology to implement KPIs, and it does this reasonably well.

I would say that many recommendations throughout the book will be of good use, although there are several concepts that are applicable in a cultural environment that is more common to multinational companies or very large local companies.

The best chapter of this book is the first, where David Parmenter discusses the concept of a KPI, from a practical point of view. He divides indicators in three basic types, that makes sense and help understand them :
. KRI - Key Results Indicator
. PI - Performance Indicator
. KPI - Key Performance Indicator

In this chapter, he emphasizes the fact that KPIs are just the few main indicators that management of a business must identify, so that they focus on the right things... Something to remember all the time when you are implementing BSCs, Dashboards and the like.

The proposed approach behind this methodology is a practical one. It is for those that want faster results. The final phrase of the book could be: "roll up your sleeves and put KPIs to work as fast as you can".

5 out of 5 stars Great Framework for Developing and Implementing KPI's.......2007-04-10

This was a very easy concise yet comprehensive framework and structure for developing and implementing KPI's. It distinguishes true KPI's from performance indicators or results indicators which people gravitate to as they think they are KPI's. This laid out a logical framework to follow. It is an easy read and provides many checklists as well as sample KPI's.

3 out of 5 stars CCNP BCMSN Official Exam Certification Guide .......2007-09-24

Haven't finished the book yet, but so far not that great. The writting does not keep your attention, but maybe it will get better. Have only gone through 2 chapters so far.

3 out of 5 stars Could have been better........2007-09-21

This was the only source I used for the exam. While it did a pretty good job at covering everything, I did notice questions on the exam that I know for a fact were not covered in the book. I'm not sure if those questions counted toward my score, but I do believe I answered them correctly anyhow. The CD that came with the book was a waste of time. The quiz chapters were out of order and had some content that wasn't even in the book (Multicasting amongst other things.) I am hoping for better quality out of the BCSI book I'm about to read.

4 out of 5 stars May not be enough to pass the BCMSN Exam.......2007-09-17

A good text, overall, but a test taker of the new BCMSN exam may need additional resources to pass this exam. I took and passed the exam after extensive study, and found 10-12 wireless questions on the examination in addition to the switching topics.

3 out of 5 stars Agree with R. Bunal.......2007-06-05

I agree with the review by R. Bunal. I took 13 certification exams in the past (Cisco and Microsoft) using only 1 book each (Exam Cram when available) and passed first time every time. Never had any problems.
But this book does not match this test. The questions in the book are simple and one dimensional compared to the exam. The exam questions are very multi dimensional. The book also totally skips things brought up on the exam - not even touched on. And the book drones on a lot about stuff not on the test. The test also uses different terminology than this book. I do recommend that you find other resources than this book alone.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book if you know about WLANS.......2007-06-02

I studied using this book for only 3 months and I scored 825 on the exam. Great book if you already know a bit about WLANS. The wireless section doesn't give enough details about the Cisco's Unified Wireless Network and the practice questions are not a challenge.

TCP/IP Illustrated, Volume 1: The Protocols is an excellent text that provides encyclopedic coverage of the TCP/IP protocol suite. What sets this book apart from others on this subject is the fact that the author supplements all of the discussion with data collected via diagnostic programs; thus, it is possible to "watch" the protocols in action in a real situation. Also, the diagnostic tools involved are publicly available; the reader has the opportunity to play along at home. This offers the reader an unparalleled opportunity to really get a feel for the behavior of the protocols in day-to-day operation. TCP/IP Illustrated, Volume 1: The Protocols features clear discussions and well-designed figures.

Volume two of this series, TCP/IP Illustrated, Volume 2: The Implementation, covers the implementation of TCP/IP. Volume three explores TCP for Transactions, HTTP, NNTP, and the Unix Domain Protocols.

4 out of 5 stars Very good reference.......2007-04-11

This book is an excellent reference or source to really learn some of the innards of TCP/IP. Very good diagrams and everthing is explained in an easy to understand way. I would recommend some basic to intermediate knowledge of network before picking this up.

5 out of 5 stars Should be the bible for TCP/IP.......2007-03-08

Well written and illustrated. Very comprehensive. After reading several books on the subject, I find this one to have easily remembered formulas for everything TCP/IP. A must for the networking professional and the up and coming professional as well.

5 out of 5 stars VERY Essential.......2006-02-23

I've taken several university-level courses in Network design and security and I have to say that this book, which is a very easy read, surpassed everything that I'd learned in my classes. If you want to work in the Networking industry, this book is a must-have.

5 out of 5 stars Best-of-class book at understanding TCP/IP.......2006-02-07

"TCP/IP Illustrated, Volume 1 - The Protocols" by Richard Stevens is probably THE book which I reference most often of any I.T. book I have. I believe I am on my third or fourth dog-eared copy (either the book becomes too worn out from overuse or, I think, a mischievous co-worker permanently borrowed one copy). Any book where I have probably spent over $200 in buying, and rebuying must be worth it - and "TCP/IP Illustrated" is worth the money!

I think you can get an idea of how great the book is from other reviews here. Rather than repeat the same raves, allow me to mention that it still amazes me, the amount of NEW books that are published that either cites, gives thanks or credits this book - Network Intrusion Detection, 3rd edition; The TAO of Network Security Monitoring; and Gray Hat Hacking are just three recent books which all mention "TCP/IP Illustrated" in their index.

"TCP/IP Illustrated" is an excellent guide for any network or systems admin. Is the material presented in this book a little dated? - Yes. Can you probably find the same material on the web? - Yes. Do you want the ONE book where you can find your TCP/IP answers? - YES! You won't be disappointed with "TCP/IP Illustrated, Volume 1".

I give this book 5 pings out of 5:
!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2005-11-21

Definitely my favorite book on TCP/IP. Doesn't nmatter if it's somehow out of date, if you need to *understand* TCP/IP you need to go thru this book.Illustrations and clear explanations are a strong point of the book.
And also a lot of references to CLI both for *nix and Windows based systems.
Also useful for networking troubleshooting and TCP optimizing.
If you need a book on TCP/IP this is what you want to buy.

4 out of 5 stars Review.......2007-09-24

This is good book to study CCNA Sem 3 and 4 but if you could grab other books or read the WEB forums they might give you more Details on some Topics

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for CCNP and Labs.......2006-08-17

Not only am I a Cisco Networking Academy Instructor, I am one of the official reviewers as listed inside this book. I spent almost a year working with the authors to make sure this book was error free, and full of realistic lab exercises. My students have used this book successfully for over 4 years.

I truly believe that this book is one of the best resources you can use for your CCNP studies.

5 out of 5 stars Practically useful, well explained details (Cisco Press pls respond).......2005-10-07

The guides were a great learning experience to me with a lot of practically useful well explained details. The following comment I sent a few times to Cisco Press - they invite you to do so at the beginning of the book - to which I never ever got a reply which is a bit disappointing for a publisher of such great books. Users who study these books may check if my findings are right. ;-)

When studying the guides I came across a section which I think does not accurately describe what is being tried to explain. It concerns the text on page 252 till the section 'Verifying the Initial Configuration of a Catalyst Switch'. Below I will try to explain what I mean by referring to the text in the book and then giving my comments between square brackets.

The first line on the page I think describes what is being explained in the following paragraphs:
'Switching tables can have more than one MAC address mapped to a particular port'.

In the fourth paragraph I think lines 2, 3 and 4 are not accurate. 'The data frame is forwarded to Switch B on Port 2 [in the last line of the previous (3rd) paragraph a Port is referred to alphabetically - Port A. I would prefer consistency here]. Switch 2 [with Switch 2 I think Switch B is meant. Please see my previous comment on Port 2 / Port A] looks up the switching table and recognizes the destination MAC address. It [I presume Switch B is meant here] sends the frame to Host F, with MAC address F, via Port 4. [the latter implies that Host F is connected to Port 4 on Switch B. This is important to remember for the following paragraphs. As far as I'm aware it is still not known with which Port on Switch B the connection is made with Switch A]

When Host F replies to Host A, the procedure is reversed. Host A [I think Switch A is meant here] can now update the switching table by mapping Host F to Port 4 [I think that for Switch A data traffic destined for Host F which resides on Switch B, should go to Port 2 because this is the port on Switch A to which Switch B is connected]. Switch 2 [or Switch B] can now update the switching table by mapping Host A to Port 2. [this implies that Switch A is connected to Switch B at Port 2 of Switch B. Following the sequence of the data traffic I think that first Switch B can update its switching table after receiving a data frame from Host A on the port which connects Switch B with Switch A. Secondly after Host F replies [then indeed the procedure is reversed) Switch A can update its switching table with the information that data frames for Host F should go to Port 2 of Switch A].

Eventually, Switch A will learn that Host D, Host E and Host F are mapped to Port 4. [this contradicts with the 4th paragraph where it is indicated that the data frame (for Host F) is forwarded to Switch B on port 2 (of Switch A) and Switch B will learn that Host A, Host B and Host C are mapped to Port 2. [if my conclusion at the end of the previous paragraph is correct then this is correct].

Summarised:
1) Port and Switch indication are not consistent A and 1, B and 2 are confused.
2) Port numbers are not accurately used. My understanding of 'Switching tables can have more than one MAC address mapped to a particular port' is as follows. When Switch A and Switch B are connected with each other via Port 2 (Switch A) and Port 3 (Switch B) then data frames sent from Hosts connected to Switch A to Hosts connected to Switch B will be forwarded to Switch B via Port 2 of Switch A. Data frames sent from Hosts connected to Switch B destined for Hosts connected to Switch A will be forwarded to Switch A via port 3 of Switch B.

As wireless communications technologies evolve, Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) seems a strong candidate for providing multimedia to the handset, as well as Universal Mobile Telecommunications Services (UMTS)--which is to say common wireless communications standards over most of the world. WCDMA for UMTS sets out to decipher the standards documents of the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP). Specifically, this book deals with the 3GPP documents on Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) and Time Division Duplex (TDD) for Universal Terrestrial Radio Access (UTRA). This book should prove valuable to readers who plan to implement WCDMA in hardware designs or service offerings.

A series of engineering problems make up the backbone of the book, and each part of the deployment process is explained via text and calculations. For example, in the discussion on planning a radio network for WCDMA service provision, the book explains precisely how to take into account requirements (for quality of service, user capacity, and coverage) and conditions (such as terrain). Readers get formulas into which they can plug relative traffic predictions for voice, real-time data, non-real-time data, and overhead. There's also an explanation of how to interpret the formula output for deploying antennae. This is a serious engineering handbook for those who are involved in deploying WCDMA. --David Wall

Topics covered: Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA)--what it is, and (especially) how to implement it in a wireless network. Radio interface protocols, packet traffic, and network planning all are covered.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars improving mobile communications.......2007-01-07

The content is highly technical. Enough "meat" for the practising communications engineer who needs to know this topic well enough to actually develop devices. The book starts off with chapters that give a good general introduction to WCDMA. Explaining in broad terms how it works and the business applications. Where the emphasis is on improving mobile communications, in no small part by permitting higher bandwidth content to be delivered to cellphones.

However, there are implications for the entire network. While the layman just sees her cellphone, the engineer also has to account for changes to the basestation and various radio controllers. Much of the book revolves around explaining what changes are needed.

5 out of 5 stars Read "a different" book before this one........2003-02-07

Otherwise it might be somehow confusing. This book is a must for professionals as another reviewer stated but it is not very suitable as the first book on UMTS technologies. This book serves best as supplementary reading. For example new-beginner readers might get confused talkink about SIP at the first chapter before explaining W-CDMA and core-network layout. Anyway, this book contains wealth of information on UMTS technologies and warmly recommended for serious readers.

3 out of 5 stars Useful compilation of standards, if you need them.......2001-06-16

If you like to read standards or have to in the course of your work, this book offers a useful and succinct compilation. Other than that, there is nothing to recommend this book as it does not help improve your understanding. Then again, this is not the kind of book which people who do not have to work with standards will want to read.

There is a short chapter on cdma2000 at the end.

5 out of 5 stars Not for newbies, must for pros.......2001-06-04

This book delivers exactly what it promises: a profound, compact and clear description of WCDMA for UMTS. The reader is expected to understand quite advanced concepts of mobile communications, hence it is not a good book for managers who want to know what 3G is all about nor for undergraduate students who want to learn cellular system basics. It is an excellent book for experienced network planners, protocol designers or research engineers, for example, who want to move from 2G to 3G. Simple test: if you don't know what are Erlang-B, orthogonal codes or layered protocol architecture, you want to study them first from another book.

2 out of 5 stars umts.......2001-05-29

With UMTS you must read what you can get - unfortunately what you can get is not aleays what you want - so with this book. Although the authors seem well informed, they are not god communicators - their explanations are alternatively trivial or incomprehensible, their diagrams, in most cases copied slavishly from the specifications, explain nothing. Perhaps this book is useful as a reference after the subject is comprehended. Comprehension does not lie here.

5 out of 5 stars so far so good..........2007-09-28

I bought this book to start studying for CCNP however Ive been to busy to use it for that. however I do use it as a daily reference for work related issues. Its a great basic guide for anyone who uses multilayer switching in their network.

2 out of 5 stars Poorly written.......2007-09-27

I'm sure the authors know the material inside and out. Unfortunately, they don't do a good job of communicating that knowledge to the reader. The book is poorly written. The authors go in for very long sentences. Sentences are typically 30 to 60 words long. Many of those sentences could have been bulleted lists. That would have greatly enhanced the readability of the book. Sentence structure is not the only problem. Many of the explanations are confusing and vague. I often had to read paragraphs several times before they made sense to me. Terms are used before they are defined. The authors are needlessly repetitive, with slightly different information in each repetition. I don't recommend this book. If you can, find an alternative.

2 out of 5 stars Would not reccomend for studying for the BCMSN.......2007-06-04

I purchased this book 3 weeks ago to begin studying for the BCMSN. This book is not written with any flow at all. The authors will spend 4 or 5 pages previewing the chapter and using terms they haven't even defined yet. This is very frustrating when studying. I have also found technical errors so far through the first 4 chapters. I thought I was going crazy at first but I went back and found where they described one thing one way in the chapter and described it another way later in the chapter.

I would not reccommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars MUST Have for any Cisco Network Administrator.......2007-06-04

This book clearly demonstrates that the authors have "been there, done that."
Liberal sets of both CatOS and IOS examples should appeal to admins at sites where 65xx Hybrid and/or Native OS are being used, and where 45xx's with older and/or newer supervisor modules are being used. The chapter on IP Telephony was quite insightful.

5 out of 5 stars A Review for the Exam and a Reference Book.......2007-03-07

This is the fourth edition of this book. With each edition of the book major changes have been required to keep up with the rapid changes in the switches themselves. Originally the switches were relatively simple things that handled Layer 3 switching only. Since then they have added layers 4, 5, 6, and 7. Now they are including wireless. Further, the progress of switching has moved from large enterprises and service providers down to even the consumer level. Switching was part of the network infrastructure. As this book says, switching is now the network.

This book obviously concentrates on the Cisco approach to multilayer switching. This is not a particular problem since it is hard to image a network that doesn't contain at least some Cisco equipment. While the book is intended as primarily a self paced study guide to preparing for the BCMSN certification exam, it goes beyond the 'cram for the test' approach to provide the reader with a true understanding of building a network. The book is also designed to serve as a reference book for people looking to solve some particular problem as they establish the network.

The authors believe that readers should have a basic understanding of networking before starting this book. They suggest that having a CCNA or equivalent level of knowledge would help in taking full advantage of the topics covered.

4 out of 5 stars Great study tool for the ICND.......2007-05-31

I purchased this book after failing the ICND when I studied with the Sybex CCNA guide. I highly recommend the Sybex book if you are a networking newcomer. It explains everything in easier terms and does a great job of prepping for the INTRO. I would follow up Sybex with this study guide. After hitting the highlights of this book and using the priorities it sets I passed the ICND.

Also, I wouldn't study ISDN as heavily. I wasn't asked a single ISDN question on either ICND exam. I might have been lucky or Cisco is phasing ISDN out of the exam because it is going out of date.

Overall, this is a good way to pass the ICND.

5 out of 5 stars PERFECT TO DO DE CCNA CERTIFICATION EXAM.......2007-01-20

IT IS THE GOODEST BUY I DID FOR MY PROFESSION. IT'S HELPING ME TO STUDY FOR THE CCNA CERTIFICATION EXAM

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic book for CCNA preparation.......2006-12-14

Wendell Odom did a fantastic job explaining the various aspects of Cisco networking. The book was easy to read and he produced some very creative ideas to clarify some of the tougher material. This book is an excellent source on OSPF, especially the commands. When I took the CCNA exam, I was shocked at how inline the material was compared to the actual exam. The test questions in the book are an excellent source to judge your understanding of the material; however, the exam questions you receive on test day will be much more difficult. If you are able to fully understand what was discussed in the book, you will have no trouble passing the exam. Therefore, I strongly believe that this book provides more than enough information to pass the exam.

5 out of 5 stars Good Resource.......2006-11-29

I think the author did a good job of explaining the topics at the basic level, and he gave just enough information to make a successful CCNA. I liked how he goes over how Cisco devices do different things. If you want to get CCNA, this book is probably the best. I looked at a number of books and frankly the ones that give you a summary do not do justice to candidate, the material, and they are not even good for just passing the exam. You need to understand this stuff and the author does a good job. He highlighed the important sections of the show commands and configurations and he explained them in the following text. Something that you can not find on the Cisco documents ( as much as I like the way they documented everything. )

5 out of 5 stars More than Enough covered to pass CCNA.......2006-11-09

First of all, I assume you want to opt for the single CCNA test instead of taking the separete INTRO/ICND tests (And I certainly encourage you to do so!). This assumption is important because in the single CCNA test you will NEVER need to memorize useless tiny details (e.g., "What is the RFC# defining ICMP?") that might appear in the INTRO test; instead, you definitely have to be able to tell what the right implementation is in a given scenario where something is not working right. This book does have all you need - Yes, read this book and you are exposed to everything you need! Someone who mentioned poor OSPF coverage by the book is definitely wrong. Please make sure you get a copy that says "2005 update included." For some reason, I still see the outdated copies of Cisco press books out there.

[PROS]
Excellent coverage of all major topics, especially (1) frame relay, (2) NAT, (3) Different behaviors of default routing depending on classfull/classless routings, (4) supernetting, etc.
[CONS]
Too much coverage in fact - you will never see RSTP in the actual exam, for example, so skip it completely. Also don't bother memorizing RFC#s, ITU#s, etc. even when Odom says you should memorize them (Such a comment in the book is for those who take the separate exams - certainly not for the single CCNA test).

Two pieces of advice that are probably the most important things of all: (1) No hands on experience? Definitely buy a simulator program! I recommend Bosom though it has some *obvious* bugs that won't slow you down. SemSim is a joke, fyi. (2) The only test engine you ever need is pass4sure (Don't even try one that comes with this book). Do some research online until you find it. Good luck!
