Book Description
In most communities, land use regulations are based on a limited model that allows for only one end result: the production of more and more suburbia, composed of endless subdivisions and shopping centers, that ultimately covers every bit of countryside with "improvements." Fortunately, sensible alternatives to this approach do exist, and methods of developing land while at the same time conserving natural areas are available.
In Conservation Design for Subdivisions, Randall G. Arendt explores better ways of designing new residential developments than we have typically seen in our communities. He presents a practical handbook for residential developers, site designers, local officials, and landowners that explains how to implement new ideas about land-use planning and environmental protection. Abundantly illustrated with site plans (many of them in color), floor plans, photographs, and renditions of houses and landscapes, it describes a series of simple and straightforward techniques that allows for land-conserving development.
The author proposes a step-by-step approach to conserving natural areas by rearranging density on each development parcel as it is being planned so that only half (or less) of the buildable land is turned into houselots and streets. Homes are built in a less land-consumptive manner that allows the balance of property to be permanently protected and added to an interconnected network of green spaces and green corridors. Included in the volume are model zoning and subdivision ordinance provisions that can help citizens and local officials implement these innovative design ideas.
Customer Reviews:
Look closer: Are these model plans REALLY sprawl alternatives?.......2005-11-09
Check out some of the final subdivision design parameters on page 87. While other reviewers might benefit from the author's justified concern for conserving open space--especially in communities where cookie-cutter style developers 'rule the Board', the end result for some of the plans in this work APPEARS to be large-lot American sprawl, with ecological considerations that don't go far enough. Perhaps Arendt's GROWING GREENER, which I've not seen, will get us closer(?)
More people need to read this book!.......2002-02-08
What a concept! Rather than trying to get the most acreage per lot, make smaller lots with more shared open space. A must read for every developer, planning board, and zoning commition. Easy to follow examples show how to preserve historic and environmental features while adding to the value of the land that is developed.
Should be a guide for the future of subdivisions!.......1999-07-03
If we developed land in the manner the author teaches, America would look so much nicer! A very common sense approach to maintain rural character in an area and stop sprawl from destroying your area. Every developer, planner, new home buyer, builder, conservationist and private citizen should read this and also buy the author's book, "Rural By Design".
excellent reference guide that will help combat urban sprawl.......1999-02-27
Cheers for Randall G. Arendt, et al. For years my government agency has been fighting a loosing battle in Florida with unmanaged and unfettered urban growth. It seemed as though nothing could stem the tide of urban sprawl until two things happened. One was an election of a more centralist government and the other was the introduction of "designing for conservation" into our policy making levels. This concept was brought into clear focus by Arendt's book. The authors not only presented a practical and economically sound guide for growth that can benefit developers, but the reference can act as a mechanism to help preserve the environmental cohesiveness of any community. The policy makers in our community were so impressed with this book that fifteen (15) copies were purchased to be placed into the hands of influential politicians, developers and regulatory agencies.
this book is a blueprint for land development of the future........1999-02-08
As a land developer this book brought into focus the problems that haave been growing as more and more of the land in my area has been consumed, and we have less and less to develop. At first I thought it would be another environmental tirade against land development, but instead realised it was a very practical and economically sound guide for development that would benefit me and also help maintain the character of my community. Arendt's concern is for the environment and the preservation of open spaces and connective corridors of space and natural habitat between differing parcels of land in a given area. His solutions achieve these goals, but of special interest to me as a developer is that his solutions also mean no loss of density, reduced costs and higher land values. Excellent illustrations, easy to understand and worth the price many times over.

.....but this one fits in your pocket.......2002-02-12
The Table of Contents of this book is nearly indentical to the "Code of Federal Regulations" issued by the Justice Department and provided free of charge to anyone who asks for it. But at roughly 6x9 inches, it doesn't fit in my pocket. So if the pocket thing is important to you, I highly recommend this book!

This little book is easy to carry around and contains all of the ADAAG info you could ever need! I've been using mine for 2 years and would be lost without it! Thomas Schmokel - ADA Consultant

Are you tired of tracking down the office copy of the ADA standards? Is the only copy within the workstation of King Tornado? Get your hands on this little number. Keep it by you at all times. I have used this reference guide for two years now and it has saved me a lot of time. This is a very easy to use condensed version of the state issued ADA guide. It is accurate and reliable and it does not have to go back to the office library. And don't let the words "pocket guide" scare you off, this is not a brochure, it is a book. It's just smaller and smarter, not to mention lighter than the stardard issue. So get a grip on ADA, pocket size.

Book Description
Proven set of best practices for security risk assessment and management, explained in plain English
This guidebook sets forth a systematic, proven set of best practices for security risk assessment and management of buildings and their supporting infrastructures. These practices are all designed to optimize the security of workplace environments for occupants and to protect the interests of owners and other stakeholders. The methods set forth by the authors stem from their research at Sandia National Laboratories and their practical experience working with both government and private facilities.
Following the authors' step-by-step methodology for performing a complete risk assessment, you learn to:
- Identify regional and site-specific threats that are likely and credible
- Evaluate the consequences of these threats, including loss of life and property, economic impact, as well as damage to symbolic value and public confidence
- Assess the effectiveness of physical and cyber security systems and determine site-specific vulnerabilities in the security system
The authors further provide you with the analytical tools needed to determine whether to accept a calculated estimate of risk or to reduce the estimated risk to a level that meets your particular security needs. You then learn to implement a risk-reduction program through proven methods to upgrade security to protect against a malicious act and/or mitigate the consequences of the act.
This comprehensive risk assessment and management approach has been used by various organizations, including the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Bonneville Power Administration, and numerous private corporations, to assess and manage security risk at their national infrastructure facilities. With its plain-English presentation coupled with step-by-step procedures, flowcharts, worksheets, and checklists, you can easily implement the same proven approach and methods for your organization or clients. Book Description
NEPA, ARPA, NAGPRA, SHPOs, THPOs, CEQ, EIS, SIA, Section 106, the National Register, Executive Order 11593. The federal laws, regulations, protocols, and agencies associated with the identification and protection of American cultural resources can be bewildering to the outsider. Thomas F. King, who has been actively involved in cultural resources management practice for almost three decades, demystifies this web of regulation, providing frank, practical advice on how to ensure regulatory compliance in dealing with archaeological sites, historic buildings, urban districts, sacred sites and objects, shipwrecks, and archives. In this brief, informally written guide, he discusses the various federal laws that govern the protection of resources, how they have been interpreted, how they operate in practice, and even how they sometimes contradict each other. The author also provides helpful guidance to the wide array of federal, state, and tribal offices that are concerned with cultural resources management and the special challenges of working with each. King's insider's guide is an essential tool for CRM work by archaeologists, historic preservationists, environmentalists, tribal governments, agency managers, and students. Sponsored by the Heritage Resource Management Program, University of Nevada, Reno
Customer Reviews:
I was dreading this book..........2003-07-12
I was dreading this book. It was required for a class in CRM law, but I have now decided that it is an essential reference that will always be found on a handy shelf in my office.
King is recognized as a leader in the field of federal cultural resource management and has written a comprehensive, digestible overview of the history of the subject and the laws that govern archaeology on federally-funded projects. The chapters are informative, yet to the point, opinionated, and, dare I say, actually funny! King gives bibliographic references to most case studies, in case you'd like to chase down the details behind a certain cultural resource management decision, but it is also the perfect, readable beginner's guide to the history and development of CRM law.
The one critique I have is that it may be time to do an update of the book to reflect the ways that CRM law has changed since 1998. However, the fundamental concepts and laws are still the same, and the book remains the best on the subject. Today, I'm buying his newest book "Thinking About Cultural Resource Management: Essays from the Edge" (2002) to see what else King has to say. I will definitely seek out other books by the author.

Customer Reviews:
Bravo!.......1999-06-11
A great reference book for those needing to decipher hazardous waste regulatory jargon. I've wasted my money on other so-called interpretive guides, which merely summarized the law. Ho hum. Wagner's book goes much further to explain and decipher the regulations, not just the law. Very helpful!
Finally, a book that fully and correctly explains RCRA!.......1999-01-26
A colleague shared this book with me to help explain some meaty aspect of RCRA. I finally understand what is required so that I can talk intelligently with the regulators. I subsequently went out and purchased my own copy. This book is great as a reference. I highly recommend you obtain a copy if you are as mystified by the RCRA regs as most of us are.

The Nepa Reference Guide
ASIN: 0471252727 |
Book Description
Praise for The NEPA Planning Process
"The most comprehensive and detailed guide to the effective, as well as efficient, administration of NEPA to date."—Lynton K. Caldwell Consultant to the Senate Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs 91st Congress, 1968-70.
"Eccleston . . . has provided a commonsense guide for managers that illuminates the NEPA process with lucid discussions and commonsense guidance on how to navigate some of the most difficult challenges in NEPA practice."—Frederic March Environmental Scientist Sandia National Laboratories.
"Here is the essential book for every NEPA practitioner. The NEPA Planning Process explains the process for preparing adequate and effective impact statements, and for complying with NEPA's statutory requirements. . . . Especially recommended."—Daniel R. Mandelker Stamper Professor of Law Washington University.
As the first modern federal environmental statute, the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) was passed by Congress in 1969. All federal agencies must comply with NEPA's sweeping mandate. Yet, amazingly, until now, there has been no authoritative, single-source guide for navigating the complexities of the NEPA process. Authored by the leading national expert on the subject, this book fills that gap in the literature.
The first comprehensive guide of its kind, The NEPA Planning Process offers clear, detailed explanations of all relevant requirements, with emphasis on managing and enhancing the effectiveness of federal planning. Designed to save hours of painstaking research while minimizing costs and risk of litigation, it integrates critical information from hundreds of sources—including the Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ)'s NEPA regulations and guidance, presidential and EPA directives, case law, recent research from nationally recognized experts, and the professional experiences of NEPA practitioners.
The NEPA Planning Process is an indispensable professional resource for environmental scientists and engineers engaged in NEPA practice. It is also a valuable working resource for project planners, regulators, citizens groups, and attorneys.

Redeveloping Brownfields: Landscape Architects, Site Planners, Developers
ASIN: 0070527687 |
Book Description
The most practical, up-to-date guide for turning Brownfields into Greenfields
This ready-to-use, how-to manual--edited by active developers who have bought, remediated, and sold brownfields--gives you a commanding look at one of today's leading environmental issues. Filled with the latest hands-on tools, Harold and Robert Rafson's step-by-step book simplifies the task of removing the barriers to redevelopment that plague environmentally distressed properties.
Brownfields goes beyond the legal and technical issues that preoccupy other current books, to focus on all the critical aspects of putting together a successful brownfields project--mortgages, marketing, and more. Complete with case studies drawn from the authors' own experience, this guide is required reading not just for owners or developers, but for every stakeholder--from environmental regulators, to bankers, realtors and prospective buyers.
Customer Reviews:
Revitalizing underutilized industrial sites---how it's done.......1999-10-29
The authors clearly present the factors that, on one hand, allow industrial and commercial property eyesores to exist, and on the other hand, those factors that can redevelop them into valuable modern real estate. The NST/Engineers, Inc. reviewers have participated in brownfields remediation designs and in the development of estimated costs for remediation, sometimes extending decades into the future. Brownfields are, according to an EPA definition, "...abandoned, idled, or underused industrial and commercial sites where expansion or redevelopment is complicated by real or perceived environmental contamination that can add cost, time and uncertainty to a redevelopment project."
A few decades ago industrialists eyeing real estate for acquisition would be concerned about the use they could foresee, the asking price, zoning potential, the neighborhood, and a few other particulars. Rarely were they deeply concerned about what had gone on at the property in past years. Now, one of the first things a prospective buyer wants to know is "what might have gone on here in past years that has resulted in contamination of structures, the grounds, subsurface, or any water bodies." Property owners have similar concerns, but they have more information. So that both buyers and sellers wonder what magnitude of environmental remediation costs would be required for various redevelopment projects. The authors take the reader through the major considerations of both buyer and seller. They treat both the private and municipal redeveloper.
Their case studies, though largely drawn from their Chicago experiences, emphasize the careful planning and execution steps required in redevelopment anywhere. Based on data from less than 200 sites, the cost of brownfields redevelopment has been estimated to be just under $60,000 per acre. Cleanup of contamination, where it occurs, has been estimated at 8% of the total cost of redevelopment. The authors make an excellent point that much more cooperation is needed between interested parties to expand brownfields redevelopment. Venture groups are needed consisting of environmental scientists and engineers, capital providers, insurance specialists, real estate experts, and an experience project management team. Not to be forgotten is "due diligence". For a brownfields purchaser this means an in-depth analysis of the physical, economic, and legal conditions of any property in question. The authors describe how this analysis must have much more depth to it than the due diligence involved with purchase of an uncompromised industrial property. Federal, state, and local environmental officials, and governmental officials must appreciate the importance of rejuvenating unused brownfields as opposed to converting more fertile farms to industrial properties. And finally those officials must have the will to find ways to make a remediation happen. Individuals in all of the above occupations are well-advised to read this book.
As a model of an up-to-date state initiative to hasten brownfields remediation, the authors provide the details of the Illinois Pollution Control Board's Tiered Approach to Corrective Action Objectives ("TACO").

Book Description
"Ralph Tiner transforms `wastelands' into national treasures. His book provides an accessible introduction to wetland ecology and management for students, the public, and wetland scientists."Aram J. K. Calhoun, associate professor of wetland ecology, University of Maine
Praise for previous edition:
Named one of the Best Science Books for Junior High and High School Readers 1998 in Energy, Environment, and Natural Resources by the American Association for the Advancement of Science
"If you want a comprehensive introduction and field guide to wetlands, written by one of America's most broadly knowledgeable wetlands biologists, Tiner's book is it."Barbara Bedford, Cornell University
In the revised and expanded edition of this classic guide, Ralph W. Tiner introduces readers to the ecology and beauty of the wetlands in eastern North America. Topics include their formation and functions, wetland types, causes of loss and degradation, and recent efforts to protect them. The discussion now includes many examples from the Great Lakes region and information on best management practices for working in and around wetlands including vernal pools. A new chapter on classification and assessment further clarifies how the unique characteristics of these important natural resources serve specific functions.
In Search of Swampland also provides a field guide to wetland plants, soils, and animals. It includes detailed descriptions and illustrationsmany of which are new to this editionof more than 300 plants and 200 animals. Clear identification keys, information on how to distinguish typical hydric or "wet" soils from dryland soils, and general procedures for identifying wetlands in the field make this book an indispensable resource for readers with little or no training in wetland science, as well as for the scientist or amateur naturalist.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent text on wetlands.......2006-03-03
I got this book as a research reference in order to assist me in wetland delineations. It covers hydric soils, wetland hydrology, and wetland vegetation in a clear and comprehensive way. I recommend this board to everyone from the wetland scientist to the interested average Joe.
Great introductory text.......2004-06-22
I teach a short course in wetlands to students who are primarily non-scientists. My students love this book, as do I. Technical issues are discussed in a way that is accessible to the general reader AND clearly explains the concepts. I highly recommend this volume both to other instructors and to individuals with an interest in the natural history of wetlands.
Excellent coverage of a timely topic.......1999-09-02
I have an interest in wetlands science and this book gives an excellent introductory review of the topic. The drawings are excellent; but I wish that there were more color plates of the flora and fauna; this, of course, would have raised the cost of the book. The bibliography at the end of the chapters are helpful if you need more information. The controversial area of hydric soils is also covered very well.
Overall a very good first book.
