This is an important book to read if you are studying for the NCIDQ. It is basically a good review of prior Interior Design studies. Well written and clear. A good lesson in how the NCIDQ quesitons are written.

5 out of 5 stars Helpful review for the NCIDQ exam.......2007-02-21

This version of the review manual is thorough and updated from the first edition. It discusses sustainablility issues, fire protection and current code information with which interior design professionals should be familiar. Even if you are not taking the exam, this book tells you how to operate as a professional and how to protect yourself in the business world of interior design.

I think the book was helpful... it broke down the sections of design well and offered up just enough information about everything to be a good guide / refresher from the days I was in school.

    Book Description

Physical Metallurgy Principles is intended for use in an introductory course in physical metallurgy and is designed for all engineering students at the junior or senior level. The approach is largely theoretical, but covers all aspects of physical metallurgy and behavior of metals and alloys. The treatment used in this textbook is in harmony with a more fundamental approach to engineering education.

3 out of 5 stars May be great reference, but not good for learning.......2007-05-04

It has been three years since I had taken a material science-like course. So, I had hoped, that by opening this book, I would relearn the concepts I had forgotten.

    Focus:
An intense look at the physcial metallurgy of metals, beginning with methods, going to crystallography, phase diagrams, and focusing on specific metals (iron-carbon, steels, etc.).

    Good:
This book goes into great details. Metallography, crystallography are explained, many concepts are in great depth.

    Bad:
This is absolutely not a good book if you don't know much on the subject or are rusty (like me). A lot of time is spent on the intricacies on microscopy. Many of the concepts are presented in too much detail. I feel that instead of learning about the properties of materials and material selection that I spend most of the time learning about every detail involved in the creation of dislocations. While this is very informative, as an engineer, I need to be able to select apropos materials, not spout how an electron microscope works or the fine details in edge dislocation. Homework problems are odd. And would it hurt if the pictures could have been colored?

    Overall:
Again, good reference. Bad at teaching or reteaching you material science.

5 out of 5 stars Very good foundation.......2000-06-24

I believe that this book is an excellent text for understanding physical metallurgy for the beginner . This is also an excellent reference manual for later information.

    5 out of 5 stars Very inspiring.......2007-07-31

This is the most inpiring and thought-provocing book on programming that I have read for many years. Very well-written, short, fun. Whatever language you are programming in, you will find it useful.
    Niels Holst, Aarhus University.

    4 out of 5 stars Almost perfect!.......2007-06-10

I really like this book and it helps me a lot when I was developing a prototype of a complex application.

The idea of using tests to force you to think about the APIs is powerfull and the use of Python to implement a xUnit framework is very interesting.

But if you are a experienced developer you will find the first part of the book very boring because Kent uses extremely small steps to develop their example.

5 out of 5 stars Finesse and humor.......2007-05-15

While I have only read half of this book, what I have read has been extraordinarily useful.

Years ago I attempted TDD with mixed success. It was very interesting and I liked having the enforcement of quality control but found it cumbersome. This book, however, has removed my reservations about TDD. Regardless of how simple the concept of TDD, its practice takes some finesse, which this book helps to provide.

The examples are quite effective at demonstrating where the traps are and how to avoid them. His appendix also includes a very simple example that is a simple explanation to give a taste to someone who is considering the technique.

The examples show not only how to do things correctly but also how to recover when you make a mistake. This practice provides both information about recovery and why certain practices are good, such as only writing new code when there is a single red light and only improving code when all the lights are green.

Finally, the book was very enjoyable. Kent uses a humorous, self-effacing style that illustrates thought processes, both "good" and "bad". It kept me completely engaged for the first eight chapters or so (before life interrupted my enjoyment of the book). It does tend to get more technical after that but I just see that as speaking to all levels of TDD practitioners - beginners to experts.

If you are thinking about using TDD, this book will convince you.

4 out of 5 stars Must read, but with a serious flaw........2006-11-06

This is a short, detailed, easy-to-follow introduction to TDD. Nothing on the market is a better first book on the subject. This book will be only your first step on a long journey; you'll probably have to read more, or take some course(s), or work with an experienced TDD practitioner, to apply TDD to read world projects.

But there's a zeroth step Kent Beck could have given a lot more help with. You can't use TDD on a medium-to-large sized project without getting approval from the project's leaders. They might well ask, "Exactly what is the primary benefit from using TDD?" Does it directly increase project velocity (i.e., get the software out the door faster)? Does it improve the quality of software developed with it? This book doesn't answer that question. (It tells you how much TDD supports refactoring, but that leads back to the same question.)

Don't get me wrong. I think TDD is very helpful. I just couldn't convince management of that, based on this book.

Read this, but look elsewhere for justification on using TDD.

4 out of 5 stars Intentionally slow-paced; this is a book on fundamentals.......2006-03-28

Many other reviewers have, with some justification, bemoaned the crunchingly slow pace of this book. Yes, the book moves through its examples slowly. Yes, sometimes Beck's mock humility comes off more than a little snide. It's not perfect on those counts, but please keep in mind that this is a book about a _process_, not a _result_.

The first example takes up almost half the book just to go through a pretty minimal implementation of a multi-currency representation for money. If this were a book about how to implement money representations, it would be a dismal failure. But of course, that's not the point at all -- the point is to use an example that's simple (so as not to be distracting), but just complex enough to produce adequate talking points to drive a discussion about test-driven development (TDD).

TDD is incredibly important, surprisingly late in arriving as a TLA unto itself, and Beck certainly gets points (cf. the review about "90% is just showing up") for producing a good straightforward introduction that's sorely needed. Nobody's going to come away from this book feeling filled to the brim with facts and sophisticated techniques. It's a short book (around 200 pages), and its pace is unhurried. What it does is focus on _fundamentals_.

TDD is all about buyin -- once you "get religion" and become "test-infected" (per Gamma), you've got a solid basis to grow from. It's about habits, and habits can be hard to teach. What's obvious to one person is mysterious to the next. Beck's approach of "sit here with me and listen to my thoughts on a simple, representative problem" is perfectly adequate. It concedes (repeatedly) that some of the steps are obvious, but the pages quickly and one never feels truly bogged down. He's really just teaching a handful of concepts throughout the whole book. You could write the concepts in a single paragraph; that's how much real, critical information is here. But it's _really good information_, and sometimes the key to grasping a fundamentally new (to you) viewpoint or idea is just hearing it rephrased for the 101st time, this time in words your brain is prepared to listen to.

So... it's a quick read, maybe a little pricey on that count. I'd say buy it anyway, and recoup the investment by loaning it to others on your team.

TDD is an incredibly beneficial infection; it's worth exposing yourself to a plainspoken explanation like this. You'll probably know within 50 pages whether you agree.

This book is a comfort to all who have gone through horrible stressful situations and will help with thought processes of how to get through a tough situation. Excellent book!

    5 out of 5 stars Powerful Book.......2007-08-31

The Kent family story is tragic. Carol Kent's ability to relate her Isaac to anyone else's Isaac strikes the heart with honesty and truth. I purchased this book to share with a struggling friend, but wanted to read it first... I'm so glad I did. And my friend... has now purchased this book for a friend of hers. You will "think" when you read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Relinquishing Your Isaac on the Altar.......2007-07-30

"When I Lay My Isaac Down" is the story of the desperate response of Carol and Gene Kent when they received the news that their son, Jason Paul, had been arrested for first degree murder.

Carol is clear and open in communicating the pain they have suffered through this tragedy. Feelings of hurt, shame, guilt, and unspeakable horror left them devastated.

Surrounded by a support group of "stretcher bearers" who offered quiet encouragement and words of comfort, and very real practical help as Carol, Gene, Jason Paul, and his wife April lived through their sorrow and bereavement.

Carol's writing resonates with hope, as she shares their story and the stories of others who also have met loss and trauma. These are stories of love, redemption, and reconciliation in times of crisis.

Each chapter closes with some questions for reflection on God's enduring, unconditional love. Responding to these in writing may help the reader learn to interpret the mysteries between the strange providential circumstances allowed by God and what we know of Him.

Carol's challenge is to change the way we think about personal challenges. She offers eight power principles to help in the process of your personal crisis, your Isaac, and your offering on the altar.

Compassion, comfort, and caring describe Carol and her book "When I Lay My Isaac Down." A Poignant and Memorable Chronicle of Tragedy and Triumph.

5 out of 5 stars Hope in spite of devastating circumstances.......2007-07-16

Carol Kent has written a book from her heart that has helped many of my family and friends deal with loss of a loved one or extremely difficult and sad circumstances. I have given this book to many hurting and sad loved ones who have told me that it was a tremendous help. I can't recommend this book highly enough! You will be encouraged and blessed.

As the sole owner of an internet business, I needed this book to guide me through what I could do myself instead of paying other people. This book has not only enabled me to save money but it has explained to me - an SEO dummy - what everything means. I am actively and continuouslessly striving for a better website. I now believe that goal is in my reach because of this book.

Great read! More informative than most but lacked in-depth detail about directories and human edited directories for traffic purposes. It also had little on buying links for traffic purposes or similar. There were lots of links to consider and most were of quality. I recommend it if you haven't had a lot to do with SEO to date.

I'm not a total noob at this stuff, but I'm no expert either. After reading several SEO blogs, talking to people that *think* they know SEO, I decided to buy this book. It covers the basics and does it in layman's terms. You don't have to know geek-speak to read this and grasp the concepts.

I've started using some of what I have learned on my dieselforza blog and on my websites. Between this book and a few online resources, I'm getting ranked higher (but still have a long way to go :-)

Your class library works, but could it be better? Refactoring: Improving the Design of Existing Code shows how refactoring can make object-oriented code simpler and easier to maintain. Today refactoring requires considerable design know-how, but once tools become available, all programmers should be able to improve their code using refactoring techniques.

Besides an introduction to refactoring, this handbook provides a catalog of dozens of tips for improving code. The best thing about Refactoring is its remarkably clear presentation, along with excellent nuts-and-bolts advice, from object expert Martin Fowler. The author is also an authority on software patterns and UML, and this experience helps make this a better book, one that should be immediately accessible to any intermediate or advanced object-oriented developer. (Just like patterns, each refactoring tip is presented with a simple name, a "motivation," and examples using Java and UML.)

Early chapters stress the importance of testing in successful refactoring. (When you improve code, you have to test to verify that it still works.) After the discussion on how to detect the "smell" of bad code, readers get to the heart of the book, its catalog of over 70 "refactorings"--tips for better and simpler class design. Each tip is illustrated with "before" and "after" code, along with an explanation. Later chapters provide a quick look at refactoring research.

Like software patterns, refactoring may be an idea whose time has come. This groundbreaking title will surely help bring refactoring to the programming mainstream. With its clear advice on a hot new topic, Refactoring is sure to be essential reading for anyone who writes or maintains object-oriented software. --Richard Dragan

Topics Covered: Refactoring, improving software code, redesign, design tips, patterns, unit testing, refactoring research, and tools.

    Book Description

As the application of object technology-particularly the Java programming language-has become commonplace, a new problem has emerged to confront the software development community. Significant numbers of poorly designed programs have been created by less-experienced developers, resulting in applications that are inefficient and hard to maintain and extend. Increasingly, software system professionals are discovering just how difficult it is to work with these inherited, "non-optimal" applications. For several years, expert-level object programmers have employed a growing collection of techniques to improve the structural integrity and performance of such existing software programs. Referred to as "refactoring," these practices have remained in the domain of experts because no attempt has been made to transcribe the lore into a form that all developers could use. . .until now. In Refactoring: Improving the Design of Existing Software, renowned object technology mentor Martin Fowler breaks new ground, demystifying these master practices and demonstrating how software practitioners can realize the significant benefits of this new process.

With proper training a skilled system designer can take a bad design and rework it into well-designed, robust code. In this book, Martin Fowler shows you where opportunities for refactoring typically can be found, and how to go about reworking a bad design into a good one. Each refactoring step is simple-seemingly too simple to be worth doing. Refactoring may involve moving a field from one class to another, or pulling some code out of a method to turn it into its own method, or even pushing some code up or down a hierarchy. While these individual steps may seem elementary, the cumulative effect of such small changes can radically improve the design. Refactoring is a proven way to prevent software decay.

In addition to discussing the various techniques of refactoring, the author provides a detailed catalog of more than seventy proven refactorings with helpful pointers that teach you when to apply them; step-by-step instructions for applying each refactoring; and an example illustrating how the refactoring works. The illustrative examples are written in Java, but the ideas are applicable to any object-oriented programming language.

5 out of 5 stars Most Useful for People engaged in Post Imp Environments.......2007-04-26

This is the most practical book for people involved in Post release / production support projects still reporting bugs and in dire need of refactoring. Project with bad Code albeit working code are toughest to refactor, even peers are scared to touch anything which has been working. Martin Fowler's insight gives all that there is to know about refactoring. Thanks Martin for your insights. Keep up the good work.

5 out of 5 stars By far the best Tech book I have purchased.......2007-04-05

This is one of the best books that sit in my office desk. I really enjoyed reading this book & implementing lot of the refactorings.

2 out of 5 stars Good ideas, bad book.......2007-02-26

Fowler's book is has a lot of very good ideas, but it is poorly written, hard to follow, and incredibly disorganized. I think it would have benefited immensely from the services of a good editor.

My two major complaints: First, Fowler tries so hard to be clever and witty that at times his point is completely lost in his misguided attempts at humor. Second, he constantly refers ahead to material not yet covered, so that it's impossible to understand Chapter N without already having read Chapter N+1, which of course presupposes that you have read and understood Chapter N.

If you are going to read this book (and I concede that you probably should) then you should at the same time buy a copy of Joshua Kerievsky's "Refactoring to Patterns." Kerievsky brings far more organization and explanation to the subject than does Fowler. Read Kerievsky first, and refer to Fowler when he directs you there (which he very frequently does). But don't try to read Fowler by himself.

I am working on an a C# agile project for the first time. The word "Refactoring" comes up a lot. This book will provide the true meaning of what refactoring is all about! Great examples will show you when and how to refactor your code. There is a handy list of Refactoring rules or guidleines that will tell you what page in the book to go to to learn about that type of refactoring technique. Make sure you put your name on the book because your co-workers will try to take it!

5 out of 5 stars One of the few truly MUST HAVE books.......2007-02-17

Refactoring: Improving the Design of Existing Code is one of those amazing books that every professional developer should have on their book shelf. The bulk of this book is a catalog of refactorings, but there is more to it as I will explain below.

In case you aren't aware of what refactoring is, I'll give you Fowlers definition.

"Refactoring is the process of changing a software system in such a way that it does not alter the external behavior of the code yet improves its internal structure." For the most part this means cleaning up your existing - yet working - code. It involves anything from renaming a method to be more concise with the purpose of that method, to breaking up switch statements into a polymorphic structure. There are many different techniques used to refactor your code, which is what you learn in this book.

Right off the bat Fowler throws you into a small sample application that is poorly designed. He then takes you through a few different refactoring techniques that improve the design of this simple application. Right from the start you see how effective refactoring can be. From there he goes into topics such as how to detect "bad smells" in code. This chapter is particularly informative and entertaining. You also learn a little bit about testing. After the introductory chapters you begin to dig into a deep catalog of refactorings. Each one is named. Like design patterns - naming the refactoring and building a vocabulary really helps in communicating thoughts and ideas.

The catalog of refactorings is extremely useful. They are structured so that each refactoring has a name, a motivation, the mechanics and a simple example. This is very effective. As I said earlier, the name is useful because it helps build your programming vocabulary and it helps in communicating thoughts and ideas. The motivation explains why the refactoring should be done and when it should/shouldn't be used. The mechanics provide a step-by-step description of how to carry out the refactoring and the example shows a small example of the refactoring in use. All examples are written in Java 1.1.

Although the examples are written in Java the book is still very good for any developer. Developers that have never written a line of code in Java, C++, C#, or anything similar may have a little bit of a tougher time working through this book. Luckily most examples are very small and simple so even if you fall into this category you shouldn't have too much of a learning curve. Some of the code is a bit outdated and can be done a bit better now-a-days but what do you expect? This book was written 8+ years ago! Times have changed. The ideas are still very relevant though, which is what makes this book so timeless.

Martin Fowler books are always a joy to read. His writing style is humorous, yet often very blunt and to the point. Just like UML Distilled, he is able to communicate a lot of ideas into a very short amount of space - the book is a bit dense in other words, which is very good in my opinion. Martin Fowler does not beat around the bush and he has very strong opinions on certain topics. Unlike a lot of books you read, he actually writes with personality. I have a hard time putting his books down. Here is an example of the type of verbiage he uses...

On how comments can be a "bad smell":
"Don't worry; we aren't saying that people shouldn't write comments. In our olfactory analogy, comments aren't a bad smell; indeed they are a sweet smell. The reason we mention comments here is that comments often are used as a deodorant." - Martin Fowler. Here he is talking about how people use comments to hide bad code, or "bad smells".

I highly recommend this book. If you are a professional developer or plan on becoming one then click the "Buy Now" button without second thought. This is one of those rare books worth its weight in gold - I would spend $100.00 on a book like this if I had to.

4 out of 5 stars A very good textbook, just not quite right for me.......2007-01-13

As an instructor at a small college, I am called upon to teach nearly every course in the mathematics curriculum. Therefore, I spend a great deal of time trolling for textbooks, as I never know from one year to the next what I will be teaching. I examined this book for possible adoption as a text for a single semester course in differential equations. My conclusion was that it is acceptable, but since it contains enough material for a two semester sequence, it must be assigned a rank lower than those that cover only a single semester.
However, I do strongly approve of the pedagogical approach taken by the authors. Their use of blue highlighting for the important formulas is eye-catching and effective. As I scanned through the book it was sometimes easier to determine the topic of a section by looking for the equations that were in blue. The exposition made the material easy to follow and the many worked and varied examples make the coverage complete.
I was also pleased to see the occasional theorem with proof. While courses in differential equations are largely, "give the technique(s), here is how to use it", it is still an upper division math course and an occasional proof is certainly reasonable and effective. The authors also include a short set of technical writing exercises at the end of the chapters and there are plenty of exercises with answers to the odd-numbered ones included in an appendix. While I don't think that I would ever make use of the technical writing exercises, I am sure that there are others who would take advantage of the opportunity.
In conclusion, even though I was impressed with this book, I doubt that I would adopt it. The differences between differential equation texts tend to be rather small, so the fact that this book is suitable for a two-semester sequence is enough for me to continue to look elsewhere.

the book was in perfect condition just like the seller said so.

1 out of 5 stars so poorly written.......2006-06-28

Wow, the examples are absolutely putrid. I am so disgusted with this book, universities are probably given some seriously cut rate deals on this book to use it. One simple example of the poor quality of this book is the following:

    page 513

"...diagonal matrices, which are square matrices with only zero (0) entries off the main diagonal (that is, a(ij)=0 if i does not equal j); and column vectors, which are nx1 matrices. For example:

    A=
    (3,4,1
    2,6,5
    0,1,4)
    B=
    (3,0,0
    0,0,0
    0,0,7)...

Then A is a square matrix, B is a diagonal maxtrix....."

WAIT BACK UP! I thought if you were a diagonal matrix then you had zeros for all numbers except for the diagonal....remember if you have i rows and j columns in a square matrix then the only time i=j is along the diagonal and didn't the book already says that a(ij)=0 if i doesn't equal j? So why does B(2,2) have a 0? Is it because not all values in the diagonal can be 0 or is it because there is a typo? I don't know but if I pull out my linear algebra book or perhaps surf the web I can find out...but isn't that a waste of my time trying to make sure these people are just using poor notation or pressed the wrong key? I think so. I certainly would never use this book again nor would I ever use it as a reference. I actually went and picked up another book for diff eq that I use along side this terrible book, and the only reason I keep this diff eq book by nagle is so I can refer back to the table of contents for topics when my teacher says which chapters the test are on.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty Standard Textbook.......2005-05-27

I just finished a class that used this textbook, and I had no real problems with it. I've seen some really poor reviews on this book which I think are unwarranted. This may not be the best book around, but it is certainly not the worst. Put simply, this is an average textbook. It is neither outstanding, nor terrible. I did find the wording awkward in places. For example, Theorem 1 regarding existence and uniqueness is stated as,

    ===============================================================
    "Given the initial value problem,

    dy/dx = f(x,y), y(xo) = yo,

assume that f and the partial derivative of f with respect to y are continuous functions in a rectangle

    R = { (x,y): a < x < b, c < y
that contains the point (xo, yo). Then the initial value problem has a unique solution phi(x) in some interval x0-delta < x < x0 + delta, where delta is a positive number."
    ================================================================

Using the phrase "assume that..." seems to completely de-emphasize the salient point which is that,

    ================================================================
IF f and the partial derivative of f with respect to y are continuous functions in a rectangle...

THEN the initial value problem has a unique solution phi(x) in some interval....
    ================================================================

But this is a fairly minor complaint, and mostly just a matter of personal taste. I am grateful that I had a good instructor though, as he was able to pull out the important points that were not obvious from the text.

On the plus side, the book has an excellent Student's Solutions Manual by Victor Maymeskul. For the most part, all the odd numbered problems were thoroughly worked and explained. I would highly recommend getting the solutions manual.

Bottom line, if this is a textbook for a class, don't worry about it. The book will be just fine, and a good instructor will be able to use it effectively. If you want a book for self study, this may not be the best at clearly explaining concepts, but at least with the solution manual you will have lots of practice problems you can work and check. For self-study, you might check out "Ordinary Differential Equations" by Morris Tenenbaum and Harry Pollard. I have not used it extensively, but it seems to be quite clearly written, and has generally received good reviews.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent text.......2004-06-23

I used the fifth edition of this textbook for my differential equations class, and since then I have continued to use it. The examples do a thorough job of explaining new concepts, as long as the reader is comfortable with working along and filling in the extra steps (Actually, in my opinion, this should be the standard method for learning from a textbook).

Since my first differential equations class, I have encountered some difficulty understanding partial differential equations, particularly heat equations and vibrations of a spring. The textbook I use for my intermediate engineering math course that I am covering this material for does a sloppy and incoherent job. However, using this book as a reference I was able to break down the process to "discovering" partial differential equations and am on my way to understanding at least heat equations and vibrating strings rather well. This book also clearly facilitates the reasoning behind fourier series and transforms.

I highly recommend this book. Although I didn't have much choice in selecting it for my courses, its use after the end of the intended course certainly exemplifies its value.

The team behind Professional Active Server Pages 2.0 has written a definitive guide for the latest version of ASP included with Windows 2000. This lengthy text offers a comprehensive look at the technology and is geared toward seasoned professionals looking to truly master this important development platform. The team of authors touch on almost every topic a working ASP coder might be interested in, including what to do when "it all goes wrong."

This title is divided into six sections that focus on key aspects of ASP: the basics, ActiveX Data Objects (ADO), building components for ASP, integration with BackOffice, security/performance/scalability, and reference material. This organization makes the book useful for both lengthy reads and quick daily reference. The index and set of appendices are also quite comprehensive.

Code snippets of judicious size and summary boxes with key information such as errors and function calls make the reading productive without being distracting. Most of the material is presented in a structured topical tutorial; however, an excellent XML newspaper case study provides a real-world perspective on XML and ASP.

While a number of working programmers authored this guide, the group's expertise has been well-integrated to read consistently. The team provides some error-preventing programming procedures such as formatting and indenting code, being "Explicit" about declarations, converting variables to the appropriate data types, using good variable naming conventions, encapsulating script, and more. Whether you're looking for information on utilizing components, implementing certificates, or working with Active Directory, you'll find answers in this fine work. --Stephen W. Plain

Topics covered: ASP basics and versions, Active Server Components, ADO, XML data, components, COM/COM+, ASP Script Components, C++ component issues, ADSI and Active Directory, Message Queue Server, Collaboration Data Objects, Exchange Server integration, certificates, performance optimization, site load balancing, and ASP Object Model.

    Book Description

This book is about Active Server Pages 3.0, as included with Windows 2000. However, because ASP is now a core part of so many Web-oriented features within Windows, this book covers a far wider area than just how ASP works. ASP is maturing all the time to encompass more integration with other Windows services and software, and so there are many other areas that impinge directly on the use and performance of ASP.

In particular this involves the Windows operating system itself, including the new security features of Windows 2000, and the Internet server software that comes with Windows 2000 - Internet Information Server (IIS). On top of this are the other less obvious services, which also have a direct or indirect effect on the way that ASP works. These include COM+, the various Internet service administration tools, and (indirectly) the many other services and installed software packages that either provide additional functionality to ASP, or which have interfaces that are available for use in ASP.

So, as well as chapters all about the roots of ASP, the base object structure, and how it's used, you'll also see chapters that demonstrate the many different ways that ASP integrates seamlessly with other software and services in Windows. One of the most obvious of these is access to data in a relational database or other type of data store (such as Active Directory), and you'll see several chapters devoted to these topics.

We'll also explore the intimate relationship between Internet Information Server and COM and the new COM+, and see how ASP has changed the way that it hosts and executes external components to provide better performance and scalability. This also affects the way that components are designed and built, and we'll be exploring this topic in some depth as well.

A bit outdated now with .Net, but I still get this ol' book out once in a while.

5 out of 5 stars The BEST book for classical ASP.......2003-04-23

Obsolete??? Hardly. As I write this review, new Web page technologies are being matured: jsp, php, chm (yech). New models are being matured: Servlets, STRUTS, .NET. Classical ASP 3.0 is still quick, fast and necessary for small to medium businesses, even enterprise-level webpages. There's no better book to learn all the standards, applications, basics, and advanced capabilities of ASP than THIS book.

I love Wrox. I started with their Beginning ASP 2.0 book (how I learned). This book, a bit more advanced but in the beginning level, is still all you need to get things going from single tiered applications to multi-tiered, database driven apps. It goes into COM objects and other MS Services like Index. Really a one-stop book.

With this book and Google you have all the reference you need.

Note: ASP 3.0 is in no way, shape, or form similar to ASP.net.

A small, tiny complaint about this book is that it can be a bit wordy...just a tad. And the index in the back could use a bit more improvement. The info's still in there.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, A True God Send.......2003-04-19

If this book had nothing more than the asptable component in chapter 16, it would still be worth the extremely high price of all wrox press books. But the book has so many useful examples that you can build on.

My only experience has been a few intranets. And I always had bought the beginners series books because I didn't feel I was at the professional level. Well, this book showed me the reason I felt that way was because I didn't know the power of ASP.

If you have been playing around with ASP and really want to move forward, stop playing with the beginners and harness the power of ASP.

4 out of 5 stars good reference book.......2003-02-03

As you I go along developing my web app, this book answers most of my questions, fexample, how to unload/load your application when you want to unload your dll from the application and vice versa. Before finding the answer in this book, I just rebooted the server. Along the way, it always answers my question to perplexing problems that I stumble upon, i.e why isn't my web app preserved the session id.

I have to admit that this is not a book that I would read on spare time. I don't know whether it's the flow of the structure or what. But I always get lost in the "too much" information supplied. Hence I cannot give it 5 stars.

For reference, this is a book to keep if you're developing ASP for one reason; as you become more comfortable with ASP, this book provides answers to your "no-more" beginner questions.
