CAUTION: Does NOT provide an outline, NOT even a study guide -- this isn't the hardcover.......2007-09-21
CAUTION: Most of the reviews listed for this Cram101 really describe the real hardcover textbook. Don't make the same mistake that I did...I bought this softcover "outline" and it was the next best thing to being robbed. There are 65 pages in the book, 33 of those pages are blank (college ruled notebook paper) and the other 32 list unrelated, useless definitions.
Every other page in the book is blank (they say: so you can create your own outline). Wait! Isn't that what they claim that they are selling you here?? The description tells you the textbook is not included...well surprise, neither is the textbook OUTLINE!
The pages that aren't blank only list definitions (isn't that what the dictionary is for?) But even the definitions are worthless. They repeat the same definitions over and over (for example, 'accounting' is repeated more than 7 times--I counted!). Additionally, they define things that are not useful like the words: budget, inventory, users, license...etc). I had to check the title again, because none of this related to the real textbook on Data Communications & Networking!
I soon realized that the real purpose of the "book" is to get the buyer to go to the cram101 website and purchase more services. SAVE YOUR MONEY, there are no notes in this so-called book, in fact it would be cheaper to buy some ruled notebook paper and make your own notes from the hardcover textbook.
Sometimes you have to buy a book for school..........2007-08-11
It is what it is. It could have been a lot better but as it is required for my class at BU, I didn't have a choice.
Easy to read and understand.......2006-11-10
The business data communications and networking book is very to read and understand. The bold and italicized writing makes it easier to comprehend the communication being presented. The information is up to date and I'd recommend this book to anyone who requires a clear understanding of business data communications and networking
Great Introductory book for Networks.......2006-03-18
It's a great introduction to networking, with details about LAN, Backbones, and WAN architectures. It is also easy to read and Understand.
Almost, but not quite there............2006-03-17
I purchased this book for a class I was taking. It was the required text for the class. I have 15 years experience in network design and administration and recently returned to school to earn a second degree. I found this text to be overly technical for its intended audience, and would not recommend it to any instructor. Also the accompanying test bank from which an instructor can pull quiz/test questions are absolutely horrible and only serve to confuse students trying to learn.

Formed in the classic textbook mold, Introduction to Cisco Router Configuration is designed as a supplement to the eponymous Cisco certification and training course. This is made abundantly clear in the end-of-chapter tests, the "Key Concepts" that dot the pages, and the bounty of diagrams, charts, and tables. But regardless of whether you plan to enroll in the class, this volume should be part of your networking library. The book's three sections deal handsomely with internetworking basics, networking protocol suites, and wide-area networking.
Internetworking (which editor Laura Chappell defines as that which ties LANs, WANs, software, and extraneous devices together) is effectively put in historical perspective in the first chapters. In addition, LANs, WANS, and the OSI model are all clearly defined both individually and in relationship to each other. The remaining chapters of part 1 address the OSI layers and data transport in more detail as well as basic router operations and configuration. The section on networking protocol suites is straightforward in its explanations of TCP/IP, Internetwork Packet Exchange (IPX), and AppleTalk in terms of the Cisco networking world.
The "Wide-Area Networking" section addresses the complex but essential topics of WAN connections, as well as X.25 and frame relay configuration. In the eight appendices tucked in the back of this book you'll find answer keys for those pesky tests, discussions of DECnet and Banyan VINES, and a host of other topics.--Sarah L. Roberts-Witt
Book Description
Introduction to Cisco Router Configuration presents the foundation knowledge necessary to define Cisco router configurations in multi-protocol environments. You'll examine a broad range of technical information on routing models, processes, and design. Beginning with internetworking fundamentals, you'll work through the internetworking model, defining the OSI layers and path determination, then move on to basic router operation and configuration. You'll delve into the configuration details for IP routing, Novell IPX, and AppleTalk, and then examine IP addressing and traffic management with access lists. Finally, you'll explore WAN communications, including serial connections, X.25, and Frame Relay.

Good Book.......2001-02-11
Book is excellent, price is not. I lucked out and found it at Job Lot for 6.99 brand new. I bought two books there for $14, would have cost me $90 at the book stores. So shop around for a better price.
Excellent for the exam, Excellent as a review........2000-11-28
This book starts at the beginning of what a new networking engineer needs to know and works through several examples of how this works in the real world today. It covers TCP/IP, AppleTalk, IPX, X25, Frame Relay, and more, if you count the appendicies. Unsurprisingly, it's also the best study guide for the CCNA. The writing is vague in places, but on the whole a review of the state of technology this clear is remarkable.
I passed the CCNA exam using this book........2000-06-12
I used this book to help me pass the CCNA exam on my first attempt. I found the explanations in this book to be a big help in remembering the CCNA material. I also used the CCNA Virtual Lab e-trainer to practice using the Cisco IOS commands.
Corrections to ICRC.......2000-05-27
Because Cisco would not take the time to review this book it has changed what could have been the best book in the world to a confusing text of mumbo jumbo, especially to the novice. A good study guide, a great reference for fundamentals.......2000-03-24
This book is the gateway to a career working with Cisco networks. A must for the beginner, and intermediate alike. This book along with Todd Lammle's CCNA study guide will catapult the network enthusiast into CCNA status. A great reference for the bookshelf thereafter.

Worth having as a reference book on any shelf.
BEST BOOK I EVER READ ON SAP.......2007-01-07
This is one of the best books and by far the most well written in my opinion. It just teaches you ALE,eDI and SAP. I have used this book,I have been a technical team lead in SAP for years and I recommend anyone working on ALE and EDI in my team to read this book at least once. This is money well spent. Just get a used one because this has become very pricy now. I bought my original book for $60 5 years ago and there is still nothing that replaces this book in the market,if you really want to learn EDI and ALE in SAP on your own. You would need access to an SAP system to enjoy the full benefits of this book!
Very handy .......2006-02-01
This book is my EDI Bible. Full of handy transactions and SAP delivered functions that will make your job a whole lot easier. Plus it was NOT written by SAP-AG which means it actually makes sense and contains actual examples with step by step instructions. Best SAP book so far

Book Description
A groundbreaking guide to forging trusting, mutually beneficial B2B relationships
Companies that have entered into B2B alliances may simultaneously be one and another's customers, suppliers, allies, and competitors. But in today's turbo-charged e-environment, how do companies take full advantage of the many benefits of B2B alliances while avoiding the obvious dangers of allowing potential competitors intimate access to their value chains? In this groundbreaking book Harry DeMaio, Director of Deloitte & Touche's renowned Enterprise Risk Service Practice, answers that question with the revolutionary concept of E-Trust, a proven strategy based on fostering business relationships based on mutual self-interest and trust. Writing for managers and corporate decision-makers, DeMaio explains the current state of B2B in an approachable, entertaining fashion, making difficult concepts easy to grasp. He demonstrates the critical role that trust, privacy, and security issues play in the B2B environment and provides guidance on how companies in various industries engaged in B2B relationships must address their varying security and privacy needs.
Harry DeMaio (Cincinatti, OH) is Director of Deloitte & Touche's Enterprise Risk Service Practice.
Customer Reviews:
Terrific primer on a complicated subject.......2002-03-15
I just finished reading this book and recommend it enthusiastically to anybody interested in how B2Bs and extended enterprises must work in the future. The book is broken down into 3 parts: Part 1 explains how B2Bs interact and how trust plays a critical role, Part 2 discusses the concept of e-Trust and business processes by industry, and Part 3 discusses e-infrastructure, security, and controls on a more technical level. Overall, the author manages to provide clear and comprehensive coverage on an exremely challenging, constantly evolving subject.
Product Description
This comprehensive reference shows how to build next-generation enterprise messaging and collaboration solutions - and how to extend them to corporate Web portals - with code and instruction straight from the source. Author Thomas Rizzo, who has worked on
Amazon.com
Programming Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Exchange is a thorough guide for building collaborative applications such as threaded discussions and electronic business documents. Early on, the book describes four types of collaborative applications: messaging, tracking, workflow, and real-time applications. Author Thomas Rizzo shows the strengths of Microsoft Outlook and Exchange Server for collaboration, including the many built-in security and administration features.
Rizzo also covers Outlook 98 development, explaining how to customize folders, fields, and views (including rules and filtered replication of messages). He then shows how to create Outlook forms, with instruction on how to use components and add VBScript event handlers. An account tracking application demonstrates all the basics on this topic.
The second half of the book is strong on building Web-based collaborative applications and covers Web tools such as Outlook Today and the Outlook HTML Form Converter. Collaboration Data Objects (CDO) objects are fully explained, showing how they can be built with ASPs and viewed in a browser. Rizzo provides excellent samples for a help desk, a calendar of events, and an intranet news application, and carefully lists the exact versions of various Microsoft tools required to run each example successfully.
The book closes with material on the Event Scripting Agent and Exchange Server Routing Objects, which provide fault-tolerant message delivery. --Richard Dragan
Customer Reviews:
Just starting out as a developer -- this book ROCKS.......2007-03-31
I have always been interested in Computer Science and I picked up this book to better understand email -- which these days is Outlook and Exchange.
It is an awesome resource for me to learn about the applications and it actually got me hired on as an unpaid intern to help out my dad's company put out an Outlook/Exchange application
The book title should not mention Outlook.......2006-11-13
I have been disappointed by this book. I wanted it mostly to learn how to program Outlook. When I started reading it, I have realized that only a small portion of it was dedicated to Outlook. Perhaps that I am harsh against the book value because I am not part of the intended readers but I guess that even readers interested to programming Exchange would not find much value of this book. I am saying so because the book is huge close to a thousand pages but it sounds like a cut and paste of the Exchange programmer user manual. When I purchase a book like this one, I expect it to be a complement to the product documentation, to give a better insight of how and why a given software works like it does. This book does not deliver up to these expectations. The best Outlook programming book that I have found is: Microsoft Outlook Programming, Jumpstart for Administrators, Developers, and Power Users. Skip this one.
Want to learn all about Exchange and Outlook?.......2006-01-06
I have to disagree with the reviewer who says there is not a lot of depth in this book. Sure, the author does leave out some topics but he clearly states that they can either really mess up Outlook or that they are not supported by Microsoft which can get you into trouble down the road. Otherwise, this book is the bible for Exchang and Outlook development bar none. I origianlly got it to learn how to integrate our corporate CRM system with Outlook (our sales reps live in Outlook!). The book is well written, has lots of samples and gave me the kick start I needed to get my job done.
Very disappointing.......2005-10-07
This is a good example of a book written by an author who just wanted to "write" and finish a book. I doubt if the author really knows the subject.
For example, in page 745,the section titled "What About Tasks?", the code example does not include task assignement, and he writes "You can attempt to code task recurrence and assignement, but this is much harder and can easily break Outlook if done incorrectly. For this reason, these functions are not shown in the following code because they are complex and prone to breaking Outlook". Funny. The author should attempt to explain how to do it correctly.
Outlook object properties, methods and events. The author enumerates all of them, no explanation. For example, page 170, about UserProperties and UserProperty, I saw a lot of these properties in his sample codes, but there are never any explanation what are these!
When he explained things, most are self-explanatory. For example in page 82 about "Setting the Actions for a Rule", he wrote"
Return to Sender - This action sends an item e-mailed to a folder back to a sender....
Delete - This action deletes an item...
Reply - With This action sends an automatic reply...
Forward - This action forwards all messages...
He shows how to create custom field (it's easy) but never explained how to access them programmatically.
It will take a whole book as big as this one to comment how disappointing this book is. It is much better to search msdn than read this book.
Not what I expected.......2005-01-10
After purchasing this book and skimming through all of it while reading the sections I was interested in more thoroughly (VBScript and Custom Forms), and then going through everything a 2nd time, I was extremely disappointed.
I found the Author was not thorough at all when going over the Outlook Library objects, methods, and properties. I was constantly going to the MSDN site to fill in the gaps. The sample code was also quite limited I thought.
In my entire life, this book is the only book I have ever taken back to the store for a refund. I instead purchased the QUE book written by Patricia Cardoza, which I have found to be far more to my liking.

Book Description
Networks are fastest-growing components in most industries. Network industries include the Internet, e-mail, telephony, computer hardware and software, music and video players, and service operations in businesses overseas, banking, law, and airlines. Oz Shy conveys the essential features of how strategic interactions among firms are affected by network activity, and how social interaction influences consumers' choices of products and services. Oz Shy is on the faculty of economics at the University of Haifa, in Haifa, Israel. His previous book is Industrial Organization: Theory and Applications (MIT Press, 1996).
Download Description
This book introduces upper-level undergraduates, graduate students, and researchers to the latest developments in network economics, one of the fastest-growing fields in all industrial organization. Network industries include the Internet, e-mail, telephony, computer hardware and software, music and video players, and service operations in the banking, legal, and airlines industries among many others. The work offers an overview of the subject matter as well as investigations about specific industries. It conveys the essential features of how strategic interactions between firms are affected by network activity, as well as covering social interaction and its influence on consumers' choices of products and services. Virtually no calculus is used in the text, and each chapter ends with a series of exercises and selected references. The text may be used for both one- and two-semester courses.
Customer Reviews:
Buy Gottinger's book instead.......2003-08-19
This is a very interesting book that covers the full range of network industries - and is in many ways a welcome addition to the literature.
However, I found the pitch of the book to be not quite right. In an attempt to satisfy a student market, the presentation is a little simplistic in places. Although there are IO courses everywhere, there are few solely devoted to network industries - so it is surprising that the publishers risked producing a paperback.
As a consumer, the price of Professor Shy's book is an appealing factor, but I found Hans Gottinger's far more up-to-date, rigorous and analytical book of the same title (Routledge, 2003) more stimulating.
Network economics in one solid and compact book.......2001-07-13
This is an original academic textbook for network economics. Oz Shy starts the book by making some reasonable claims on his discipline at large: scientific papers in economics are too technical and use unnecessary amounts of calculus. Though the book is very analytical and covers a wide scope of issues, prerequisites are at a considerably low level. Because the book uses game theory and logical reasoning instead of calculus, it is accessible to readers with different backgrounds. This book will be in good use at least with the students of economics and engineering.
The book starts from the basic economics of networks and then analyses various networked industries from hardware to software and airlines to social interactions. Most topics stand separately on their own feet. The book ends with a compact presentation on the used game theoretical concepts as appendices.
Being a texbook in economics, however, does not excuse inaccurate and sometimes clearly misleading use of technical terms. I had serious problems understanding why "software" denotes in this book to all kind of digital content including music and movies. In my mind, the word software is restricted to computer programs and associated materials. Also, building models on some specific technology, Shy continuously leaps over the problem of defining its essential features, which should (or should not) be modeled. Taking definitions of technical terms as given (by Shy) can definitely confuse at least engineering students.
In overall, this book might be best characterized as an academic add-on to the well-known business book "Information Rules" by Carl Shapiro and Hal Varian. With some inaccurancies and perhaps some time-gap to real world applications, it makes a good textbook. Essential parts are timeless and presentation clear.

Another in Cisco's Certification and Training series, Advanced Cisco Router Configuration picks up where Introduction to Cisco Router Configuration leaves off. Like its sister publication, this book is intended to accompany a like-named Cisco class and provides chapter-ending tests as well as a profusion of diagrams, configuration commands, charts, and such.
However, this volume's six sections tackle more complex topics with an emphasis on network traffic and connectivity issues. Instead of basic internetworking, scalability--particularly in terms of the router--is the idea driving these pages. By this, editor Laura Chappell simply means building a network that is able to expand, while requiring only minor interventions and additions. This leads to another strength of the book: underlying concepts are effectively outlined in the introductory chapter of each section, thereby establishing a context for the remainder of the discussion.
After getting the notion of scalability out of the way, the authors clearly discuss traffic congestion and ways to manage and solve it on Internet Protocol (IP) and Internetwork Packet Exchange (IPX) networks. They follow with an explanation of which protocol to deploy, be it Open Shortest Path First (OSPF), Interior Gateway Routing Protocol (IGRP), or Routing Information Protocol (RIP). Also covered is dialup connectivity for remote users and for wide-area connections, as well as how to bridge nonrouted services, such as Data Link Switching. Like many Cisco books, this one wraps up with seven impressive appendices, including a top-notch glossary.--Sarah L. Roberts-Witt
Book Description
Advanced Cisco Router Configuration presents advanced methods and configurations for effective LAN and WAN traffic management. You'll examine a broad range of technical details on routing protocols, configurations, access methods, security, and traffic control. Detailed advice is provided on dial-up connectivity, managing network traffic and access, configuring scalable routing protocols, and integrating non-routed services. As you work through the text, you'll gain valuable insight into effective ways to harness the power of internetworking devices and understand how proper configurations lead to enhanced network longevity and performance.

It is what I use to teach the class........2001-12-10
Whether or not you pursue the CCNP certification router configuration is something that is a key to ensuring that your network is safe from the outside and the safety of the data is a prime concern of any network administrator.
This 635 page guide is a great addition to my technical library with the information presented I was able to enhance my router knowledge for both network and training purposes. The book is broken into five parts with Part 1 covering the overview the scalable Internetwork.
Part 2 delves into the topics of managing traffic, network congestion, setting up IP access lists, IPX/SPX and SAP access lists and setting up queuing to take care of traffic problems. Part 3 covers VLSM, Classless and Classful subletting, OSPF in both single and multiple areas, EIGRP and BGP protocols.
Part 4 is the Dial-Up section with topics like WAN encapsulations, ISDN, DDR, PPP and HDLC. Finally part 5 the Non-Routing section where you learn about bridging techniques like source-routing, transparent and translational. The book is filled with actual examples of the code to make the understanding easier. Overall an excellent buy for the money.
very much lacking.......2001-09-14
This book could have been much, much more than it ended up. I bought it without having read any kind of review and I definitely regret it. After having read a far superior book on ACRC (Semester Five Companion Guide), I have to say that this book lacks too much in detail for the price. There are numerous errors (which you can view errata on the Cisco Press web site, it's massive) in this book as well that can confuse the reader tremendously. I only buy Cisco Press books, but had this been my first, I may have reconsidered. Mark McGregor did a much better job writing the Academy curriculum.
Why Read Anything Else?.......2001-08-27
This will be a short review--I assure you. If you are serious about achieving CCNP status, this is the book to read after completing your CCNA (for that I recommend Tod Lammle's book).
Good concepts, poor implementation.......2000-08-29
The concepts of this book are great - it explains the steps the router takes to accomplish a task. Unfortunately, the implementation isn't what I expected. Perfect example is setting up NAT. This book explains everything about how nat works, what it does and how it does it, but it doesn't give the OS commands to implement it! For the price, I would think that could be included.
A half of ingridient you must have in order to pass.......2000-06-21
As i have advised many CCNP-tobe, you'll need both thing : 1) Cisco Press Study Guide ( this book for ACRC ) 2) Cisco ACRC exam guide ( for brushing and prepare you in the coming days of your testing experience :).
Use this study guide for your replacement of ACRC traning course.
Good luck, ( Scored 884, in 1 hour, though i thought i failed ).

Customer Reviews:
This is the old version.......2007-02-02
Just so you know, this is the old version. The new version came out in 2006. Don't buy this book unless you need to because it costs less than the new version.
Sybex falls tragically short this time.......2006-08-08
Sybex normally has a reputation of being THE book to study to prepare for your exam of choice. Unfortunately this one falls well below of my expectations. I've been in the IT industry for a few years now, and even I found this book to be a difficult read. Many times, the elements presented dont follow a logical sequence, making it necessary to flip back and forth among chapters to gain the proper perspective. This book often calls reference to items you'll learn in future chapters, which can be confusing when the authors throw acronyms at you that you dont understand.
Also, I find the review questions in this book rely solely on your memorization of the material studied, but not on APPLYING that knowledge to a real-life scenario, which is really what you will be tested on (applied knowledge). The review CD that comes with the book is equally uneffective. It does have a feature where you can re-review all the end-of-chapter questions, along with a "flash card" program of about 300 fill in the blank, and true/false questions, but again; these are strictly memorization, and doesnt really help when presented with a problem thats not in the book.
After finishing the 70-271 section, and answering all the book questions, I downloaded another test resource and was blown away with how much I still did not know. I really cannot recommend this book, I really should start reading reviews before I blow 60 bucks. Try the Microsoft Press books, they're more expensive, but well worth it. At least you'll walk away with a feeling of actually being prepared for the test. But of course, these are just my thoughts. Good luck to all the techies in getting your certs!
Too many errors.......2006-05-03
I purchased the first edition of this book nearly two years ago (before the Deluxe Edition) to prepare for the MCDST certification. Unfortunately, I found that many of the 100+ excercises were missing procedural steps or were just flat out wrong (ex. page 360/excercise 9.4). Usually after discovering that a study guide is full of errors and vague explanations I toss the book aside along with anything else ever written by the author. But I have examined other study guide material written by Bill Ferguson and I am convinced he is a competent instructor. I guess the editors of the first edition were in a rush to meet the release date for the 1st edition and did a cursory reading of the manuscript. Hopefully, the errors of the 1st edition have been corrected in the revised Deluxe Edition.
Good, for the price.......2006-03-14
The MCDST Study Guide is a good value for the money. I would like to see more questions at the end of the chapters and for them to show more print screens of the topics instead of just telling you that you will need to know this for the exam.
But to get two study guides, in one book, that tells you what you really do need to know for the exams, is worth the price and is a bargain.
Didn't cover enough material.......2005-03-04
I placed an advance order for this book two months prior to release based on past experience with Sybex products. I took 70-271 using only this book (and considerable work experience). I did pass the test (830), but there were several questions on the exam that the book had not addressed at all. I am apprehensive about how well the book will prepare me for 70-272 and I'm considering purchasing additional material. Looking at the reviews on this website, the Timothy L. Warner book appears to be a much better product.
