4 out of 5 stars Great SIPs Primer.......2007-08-23

Excellent overview of SIPs construction basics and techniques. Author explains in ordinary terms so any layman can understand. Anyone considering SIPs construction should buy this book. It would be nice if a newer version (this one is 2002)were available to discuss the latest products.

3 out of 5 stars Arguing for the Technology.......2007-01-13

Good book to explain the fundamentals and ideas behind why Structural Insulated Panels area a good building medium. Unfortunately, the solid information on estimating the costs or tricks to design that the interested party are looking for are not there.

I look for someone to write the next book in the series.

5 out of 5 stars an excellent source for hard to find information.......2006-06-18

this book provides a thorough and well detailed look at SIP anatomy and construction techniques. information on this construction type is extremely difficult to find from sources other than (possibly biased or glossed-over) information from SIP manufacturers. the content covers so many details of its construction that it could concievably be used as a primer/manual/textbook for contractors or others interested in using this construction type. any information needed to supplement the information found here will most likely be so specific that it will be material related to a particular manufacturer's product or information gleaned directly from materials testing reports. i have looked extensively, and not been able to find, any materials on SIPs that could compare to the value of this source.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Starting Point for Learning about SIPS.......2005-09-21

Just a quick note on this book. My wife and I are looking to build an energy-efficient home. We are both engineers and very detail-oriented people. As part of our due diligence, we picked up this book after seeing a demonstration house built with SIPS as part of the 2005 Smithsonian Folk Life Festival (this was part of the US Forest Service pavilion - sustainable building approaches area). As noted in an earlier review, this book does have a bit of a promotional feel. However, it could simply be the author's enthusiasm for what appears to be a very good product. The book is also somewhat light in treating potential problems with SIPS. The failures of mutliple SIP roofing systems in Juneau, Alaska should have been addressed. In fairness though, these failures seem to largely be installation problems on the part of a small number of builders unfamiliar with the product. Overall, this book is a very useful and fairly detailed introduction to SIPS building. We would love to see a follow-up title that goes into much more technical detail on designing for SIPs use, as well as further exploration of lessons-learned from using SIPs in various settings and climates.

5 out of 5 stars Answered my questions.......2004-05-25

I have been considering building a home on a piece of property I own for the better part of a year now. I'm a fan of SIPs due to energy efficiency and the perception I have of their ability to withstand the harsh climate of south Texas. It helps that the best home I've ever owned (and I've owned more than ten) was a panelized home but on a wood foundation that I purchased in Minnesota 15 years ago. The house was solid, energy efficient and better built than anything any of the many site built stick homes I owned before and since.

I've tracked down a variety of sources of information on SIPS including most information readily available on the web. This book has been an essential tool for me, and I would heartily recommend it to anyone considering building with SIPs. It addresses all of the common objections and misperceptions (and there are many), and it does so in a methodical and comprehensive manner. I can see where some folks might consider that to be promotional, but I believe there is still a stigma to panelized construction, at least in the minds of a large segment of the population, so perhaps it's appropriate that a little promotion or cheerleading is included. It also addresses a number of practical considerations you'll have when building, such as electrical, plumbing and hvac considerations. It's not a manual, but I wasn't looking for a manual. After reading it, I feel that I will be better able to find and work with a builder and accomplish my goal...to build a quality, affordable house that is structurally superior, energy efficient and will last the rest of my life. Most importantly, I have yet to find another source on the subject that provides so much information with so little effort. As a result, it gets five stars.

5 out of 5 stars This book has the answers.......2004-03-11

I like this book very much. Not only does it answer color questions for inside my house, but it gives me color guidance and inspiration for the outside of my house (which is in dire need of a paint job). The photography in the book is lovely . The detailed instruction for choosing colors makes it easier than I thought it would be. This beautiful book is a useful tool.

5 out of 5 stars Very good resource.......2003-09-20

My wife and I found this book very helpful in determining colors for the outside of our house. I learned what was needed to prep and paint the house as well. My wife enjoyed the information on color for our rooms and is planning a color scheme. This book is worth the investment.

5 out of 5 stars Quick and Easy Paint Color Solutions.......2003-07-11

I gave this book to several friends as house warming and wedding gifts. Both friends said they loved the book, but more than that, they were able to get use out of it. One friend found a beautiful putty paint color for the outside of her house. Her house looks amazing with charcoal colored shutters. She is so happy with the result. My other friend chose a color scheme for her living room, dining room and family room. She said the book made it easy. I have since purchased a copy for myself. I'm reading it now and am getting very inspired to make changes in my own home.

5 out of 5 stars It's Got It All!.......2003-06-25

This is a very comprehensive guide for choosing colors for both the interior and exterior of your home. It includes everything you would ever need to know about color, painting techniques, and everything in between. This is the only guide that I will need to accomplish my goals. There is simply nothing about the color selection and painting process that isn't thoughtfully addressed in this book. Plus, the photographs and are beautiful! It's got it all.

Book Description

What defines an Arts & Crafts bungalow? What makes it different from other small, one or one-and-a-half story houses? Many say that it's hard to describe, but you know one when you see it. And knowing one when you see it is all about knowing how to spot the details. With Arts & Crafts homes, it is often the way the details are combined, and the philosophy they represent, that makes a house an authentic Arts and Crafts bungalow. It is not just knee braces in the gable, nor a river rock column, or a three part front window. In their latest book, bungalow experts Jane Powell and Linda Svendsen identify the finer points and visual characteristics that make a bungalow a bungalow, and show how to incorporate these important details into your bungalow. The authors skillfully explain how to identify the details and the ways of blending them, and offer insight into the Arts & Crafts philosophy behind their use. A sleeping porch, a pergola, an exposed rafter tail, an extensive use of wood, stone, and brick: none of these things by themselves characterize a bungalow. With Bungalow Details, however, anyone can become a bungalow expert, and be able to confidently "know a bungalow when they see one." Jane Powell is the proprietor of House Dressing, a business dedicated to renovating and preserving old homes. She is a frequent lecturer and consultant, and is the author of Bungalow Kitchens and Bungalow Bathrooms. Linda Svendsen, a graduate of Music and Art High School and Parsons School of Design in New York, has been a renowned photographer for more than thirty years. Her work is showcased in numerous magazines and books; she is the author of Bicycle: Around the World.

4 out of 5 stars Good book.. a bit too politically correct.......2006-11-05

I enjoy this book and look at pretty regularly. I plan on using some of the details on future construction projects. However, the author is a bit too politically correct for my tastes. She keeps reminding us how "poison" vinyl is. That sort of bothered me. I am sure, given a choice, most people would choose to live a beautiful wooden or stone home rather than a vinyl clad manufactured home or tract home.. however lets be realistic. Those types of home are often what is affordable to the average family. Other than that issue.. I would recommend the book.. it has some great pictures and lots of information about bungalow exterior details.

5 out of 5 stars best of the bunglaow books.......2006-03-24

Together writer Jane Powell and photographer Linda Svendsen create the best bungalow books on the market -- full of information, not just fluff. Whether you are thinking of remodelling your house, changing a few details, or just want to understand the history of your bungalow, this is the book to buy... and really, this book is very cheap compared to the price of a bad remodel.

In my opinion the chapter on avoiding replacement window scams, while energy-retrofitting your house, should be required reading for all homebuyers.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent reference guide to Craftsman bungalows........2005-11-25

I don't live in a Craftsman bungalow, but I'm adding a number of Craftsman details to my existing NW cabin style house. Over the years I have collected numerous books full of photographs of various bungalows but I have sold all of them now that I have this book. This one book contains information on nearly every exterior detail you are likely to need, and is lavishly illustrated with photographs and drawings. It's an excellent reference for buffs and restorers. I have already pre-ordered the next volume which will cover interiors. Shame I have to wait 6 months!

5 out of 5 stars Bungalow exteriors gives great needed detail.......2005-08-14

This book became and instant reference for our home project and I have quite a few in my collection. If you are looking for good examples to put the finishing touches on a bungalow or arts and crafts project, Ilike this one!

5 out of 5 stars Fantasic, complete, not just a pretty facade!.......2005-03-05

Having devoured Powell's book entitled "Bungalow Kitchens", I knew this book would be every bit as detailed and I was not disappointed. In case you doubt that an entire book can be filled with nothing but information on the exteriors of bungalow houses, I can assure you that page after page is replete with excellent color photographs, illustrations (both modern and period), detailed descriptions of various materials and techniques, and information to help you do a bungalow exterior the RIGHT way (don't paint those bricks!!).

My one and only complaint was the extremely short length of the chapter on foundations, but it's more than made up for by the incredibly detailed chapters on sidings, roofing materials, doors, windows, porches, fences, and much more. Each chapter has an exhaustive listing of suppliers for every kind of material.

We don't have a bungalow, but we will be building a reproduction bungalow house in the next few years and will rely heavily on this and all of Powell's other fine books for both information and inspiration.

- Easy to understand. Well explained. It served my purpose and I think it is a good start for people who want to start from basic and move up to understand enclosures.

5 out of 5 stars Best book on building envelope I have ever read.......2006-03-09

Our architects and I agree this is a must have for people who design buiding envelopes. The author is clearly knowledgable about theory and practice and writes clearly for architects and designers.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent professional reference.......2006-01-20

This is one of the best books on the subject I have encountered. Exterior envelope design is a complex topic. The author does a good job of presenting both basic principles and practical examples.

This is valuable reference to anyone trying to keep up with the science and practice of designing the building skin.

5 out of 5 stars The History of Home Colors.......2007-04-04

Learn about the trends of home colors throughout history, and find tips for returning your bungalow to a shade from the period in which it was built.

4 out of 5 stars Pleasantly Surprised.......2007-03-15

It is a well thought out and researched book, beginning with a significant amount of history about Bungalows and their Craftsman cousins. From a historical perspective it is definitely worth the read, and contains many source images of homes from this era highlighting the different color choices and how they changed over time. I learned that dark window sash paint was prevalent until the 1920's, when it shifted to white (paving the way for ubiquitous white vinyl!).

It then goes into the process of picking colors, including very helpful suggestions to work with various roof colors, period and real world examples, as well as specific details such as porches, steps and eaves. The book also has a short technical section on colors, very helpful to educate husbands in how to articulate thoughts about colors.

My only real peeves with the book is the lack of references past 1930, and the lack of any Spanish styles, save the cover of the book. My house is (obvious by my peeves) a 1938 Spanish style bungalow. Even without a plethora of period examples for my specific need it helped me decide where I wanted to go with my house, and how to draw focus without detracting from the whole.

5 out of 5 stars Very useful for building my new bungalow home.......2007-03-10

I was skeptical about this book after reading other reviews. However, I was very pleasantly surprised how useful two particular sections of this book were for me. The "Developing Your Own Color Scheme" section takes you through decisions for each part of your exterior. Not only is there the body of the house to decide a color for, but there are the trim and accent colors, the window sash, the roofing materials, and the foundation. In order for a color scheme to work and show off your bungalow's best features, all of these elements need to work together. The other section I liked is "Before And After," which shows how actual homes were improved by emphasizing or de-emphasizing certain elements of their exteriors. I even chose my own colors from one of the alternate color schemes the author suggests. Warning -- the color swatches printed in the book look nothing like the real Sherwin-Williams colors of the same name. If you see a color you like, take the book with you and find a similar color at the paint store.

3 out of 5 stars OK, but disappointing photos/examples.......2007-01-15

As a Craftsman bungalow owner, I was eager to turn to this book for some direction in returning my home's exterior to its period. While there is a good attempt to address some of the questions of color, many of the photos are so poor (harshly contrasting sunlight, faded or inaccurate colors, etc.) that the "actual" examples are very disappointing. Further, the best photographed examples are from large A&C homes, not Craftsman, and not "bungalows," as the title implies. However, the color examples provided in the book (in "chip" form, rather than from photos) were helpful. In all, I got something from this book, but not as much as I'd hoped.

4 out of 5 stars Picking colors for exterior paint.......2006-11-03

This is a wll researched book. I wanted to use it to help me pick colors for my house. The book features sherwin williams, not the paint I used. It did give my ideas on how to paint the trim in an original way, but did not really help me pick out distinct colors. Most of the colors used in their makeovers were light. I wanted to see more darker colors for the house body.

Superb colorist Kaffe Fassett departs from his usual medium of textiles to unleash his magic on the world of mosaics. Teamed with expert needle artist-turned-mosaicist Candace Bahouth, Fassett proves no less adept at manipulating the harder materials--glass and ceramic tesserae, broken china and tiles, mirror fragments, pebbles, seashells, and even faux pearls--than his accustomed softer substances of fabric and yarn. As with most of Fassett's oeuvre, this volume is more an assemblage of highly imaginative ideas than a traditional how-to approach. A number of the projects do include step-by-step instructions and there is good coverage of the basics (tools, materials, bases, tesserae preparation, adhesives, grouting), but the presentation presumes the readers' willingness to experiment, as well as some degree of confidence in their own creativity. But again, as is typical of Fassett's productions, the simple act of leafing through these pages offers unlimited inspiration. Stunning photographs abound with brilliant hues and spectacular creations by the authors and by mosaic artists around the world: grottoes, chapels, cars, walls, furniture, terraces, entire buildings. And perhaps mosaic work is not so different from textile manipulation after all: witness the many pieces composed like a patchwork quilt, or the tapestry-upholstered armchair that reveals itself actually to be entirely covered not in fabric but in ceramic tesserae. This volume is truly a feast for the eyes. --Amy Handy

I love the explosion of colors that Kaffe uses, both in mosiacs and quilts . This book has a ton of brightly colored mosiac pictures in it...lots of interesting ideas...fairly good instructional pictures but all in all , I didn't like it and returned it . There was only one project (the broken pottery flower pot) that I would have even considered doing and it, too , was just to busy looking for what I was interested in doing. If you love the color explosion that always come with Kaffe projects then this book is for you. If you prefer something a little toned down , or a little structured, then this book is not for you. Hope this helps someone decide!

I don't yet mosaic but picked it up at the library during an idle moment and just couldn't put it down.
I have always loved Fassett's sense and use of colour, and this book does not disappoint. It certainly will give you lots of ideas and you will probably find yourself daydreaming about mosaic renovations to your house. This book is a visual delight and the instructions seem easy to follow.

Book Description

While certain ecological problems associated with artificial night lighting are widely known-for instance, the disorientation of sea turtle hatchlings by beachfront lighting-the vast range of influences on all types of animals and plants is only beginning to be recognized. From nest choice and breeding success of birds to behavioral and physiological changes in salamanders, many organisms are seriously affected by human alterations in natural patterns of light and dark.

Ecological Consequences of Artificial Night Lighting is the first book to consider the environmental effects of the intentional illumination of the night. It brings together leading scientists from around the world to review the state of knowledge on the subject and to describe specific effects that have been observed across a full range of taxonomic groups, including mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians, fishes, invertebrates, and plants.

Ecological Consequences of Artificial Night Lighting provides a scientific basis to begin addressing the challenge of conserving the nighttime environment. It cogently demonstrates the vital importance of this until-now neglected topic and is an essential new work for conservation planners, researchers, and anyone concerned with human impacts on the natural world.

5 out of 5 stars Here are examples not only of effects on plants, insects and animals but how to mitigate them.......2006-12-14

A reader might anticipate from its title that ECOLOGICAL CONSEQUENCES OF ARTIFICIAL NIGHT LIGHTING holds a in-depth technical focus on night lighting's impact on nature - but it goes beyond chronicling science to consider how human activities from lighting affects animals and plants in a variety of ways. 'Photopollution' exists nearly everywhere thanks to mankind's activities: here are examples not only of effects on plants, insects and animals but how to mitigate them. Sections seek a readable approach by pairing vignettes of events and experiences of nighttime creatures with plenty of science and analysis of the physiological and behavioral effects of light pollution. It's these vignettes which make this book accessible not only to college-level students of science, nature and ecology but the general non-scientist public library browser, as well.

3 out of 5 stars Not for all building types.......2002-02-13

This book does not contain much information on wood-framed buildings. It focuses primarily on concrete and masonry structures, with some information on EIFS systems. As an architect, I bought the book as a resource for drawing construction details. I found that the index was hard to use (sparse) and it was difficult to find specific information on certain building transitions (window flashings, for example). I'm sure the book would be helpful to someone looking for information on large-scale commercial waterproofing solutions, or in-depth discussions regarding sealants. I needed a book that was a bit broader in scope.

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS A MUST BUY!.......2000-08-02

This book could make a waterproofing expert out of anyone! It offers complete and detailed information on every imaginable topic about waterproofing, restoration and even testing for leaks. The best part about the book's structure is that it provides answers and information for the simplest to the most difficult of waterproofing situations. The author has made great use of details from manufacturer's detail drawings and job site photographs to explain how to properly install and inspect waterproofing systems. I got to this page through his web site that even lets you ask questions if the book hasn't answered them - what a GREAT IDEA!

5 out of 5 stars DON'T HESITATE TO BUY IT!.......2000-07-24

While too many other books present only a portion of information on the topic, in this book it is obvious that the author has extensive experience in the field and leaves no topic regarding waterproofing untouched. What makes this book a great resource is ability of the author to associate the text with sufficient detail drawings or photographs for each of the waterproofing areas presented. Waterproofing is not a topic that can be described in words only and this book is the only one that makes sure a reader at any level of knowledge in the waterproofing field can understand the necessary concepts involved. This book has been a great resource for the maintenance work of building management whenever we have a waterproofing related issue arrise. I imagine that if architects or engineers would make better use of such a book in the design phases of a project, buiding owners wouldn't have so many related problems while operating the facility. The chapters on leak repair have saved us many headaches and dollars!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Resource.......2000-03-24

This is the first book that offers a complete guide to any waterproofing related subject. Even better it offers a great chapter on finding and resolving leaks when they occcur. THIS CHAPTER IS WORTH THE PRICE OF THE BOOK ITSELF! Anybody in the design, engineering or construciton fields needs this book on their bookshelf. Finally somebody has got this subject right!

Book Description

The story is all too common in today's housing market: the basic principles of scale, proportion, balance, rhythm, and consistent architectural styles are often misapplied in new residential construction. Walk around almost any new development, and you will find dormers that are bigger than the front door; windows that are out of scale; too few or too many columns; and more. What Not to Build: Do's and Don'ts of Exterior Home Design shows these problems and more to the reader. Focusing on the exteriors of houses, the authors-who are architects and designers-have identified a number of 'problem' designs. Through photographs and illustrations, the authors show how problems can be solved by applying easy-to-understand design principles. Anyone reading the book will be able to avoid the problems when designing their own house or fix problems that appear in the house they're already living in.

2 out of 5 stars What Not to Buy.......2007-08-30

This book looked very enticing in the store. With lots of photos of lots of houses. The format shows digitized versions of the same house with critiques of what NOT to do, accompanied by a photo (obviously the real house) of what any good designer would do. There is minimal text so this is mainly a picture book. However, I found the suggestions to be very basic and mostly obvious. The what NOT to do photos show design elements so bad, you are not likely to need a book to keep you from making those errors. Save your money, take a good friend to dinner and have them critique your design choices. Better on the digestive tract too.

5 out of 5 stars Don't build unless you buy this book.......2007-06-17

Fabulous book - an absolute must before you build a new home. I would love to pass this book out to many contractors in my area! My dad was a home builder and sensitive to architectural style and design. So often I see new houses being built that are the "What Not To Build" examples in the book.

The authors did an incredible job of reviews, photographs, and helpful details. A must have!!

5 out of 5 stars Contractors should buy this book!!!.......2007-05-30

I know half a dozen contractors whom I'd like to give this book to. I know another 6 whom I like use it to smack them up side the head. Excellent book with tons of examples and color pictures pointing out specifics of what to do and not do. Great for those thick headed people who just don't get design, aesthetics & balance.

4 out of 5 stars Helpful resource when considering design.......2007-03-24

As we started the design process of our own home, this book proved an interesting read. We keep it on our shelf of resources. The book has sections considering each of the possible design elements of the facade,(include the front entry, columns, porches, roofs, dormers and windows) plus a chapter each on landscaping and looking at the 360-degree view. Also included are sections on principles of design, proportion and balance. Some of the design errors illustrated were glaring, others not so obvious. I find myself picking some of these out as I drive through different neighborhoods. It was sometimes difficult to express what didn't "feel right" while looking at a home or at the rendering of a design; now with this book as a guide, these errors are easier to identify and the "after" photos suggest possible fixes.

5 out of 5 stars Welcome and strongly recommended addition.......2006-10-04

The collaborative effort of professional home designers and residential planners Sandra Edelman, Judy Gaman, Robby Reid, "What Not To Build: Do's And Don'ts Of Exterior Home Design" is unique among architecture books in that it's focus is on avoiding common design mistakes that result in un-esthetic (and down right ugly) exteriors. "What Not To Build deftly surveys architectural design principles of scale, proportion, balance, rhythm, and style consistency in residential home design. "What Not To Build" showcases fifty "before & after" examples of mistakes made on actual houses -- and how to correct them. Enhanced with more than 300 full color photographs, even the most novice architect and aspiring home owner can learn how to make their house building or remodeling project comply to sound architectural design principles. A thoroughly "user friendly" guide, "What Not To Build" is a welcome and strongly recommended addition to personal, professional, academic, and community library Architectural Studies reference collections and supplemental reading lists.

4 out of 5 stars Outdoor Mosaic: Original Weather Proof Designs.......2006-03-10

This book had a great chapter on technical information and weather proofing outdoor mosaics. Was extremely helpful in determining which products I should be using on my own water feature and protecting it. Well worth the effort and time to have it sent to Australia for this chapter alone.

3 out of 5 stars Not really a how-to book.......2004-07-29

The book is mainly devoted to showing various projects made by the authors. Very nice and inspiring, as they do wonderful work, but if you are looking for in-depth instructions or practical knowledge, this is not the book. Try Encyclopedia of Mosaic Techniques by the same authors, instead.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty Pictures, But Not Enough Technical Information.......2004-04-05

I purchased this book specifically for technical information on creating outdoor mosaics. I was particularly interested in recommendations for grouting, adhesives, materials, etc. The majority of the book is taken up with lovely pictures and projects, but the technical portion is given the short shift at the end of the book. I'd recommend other books if you are just starting out and are looking for good, detailed information.

5 out of 5 stars Mosaic Workshop Rules.......2002-11-11

Brilliant book written by two of the most experienced mosaicists in the UK. I was so impressed, I attended a Mosaic Workshop course in London in October 2002 which was taught by Emma Biggs. I am now using this book as a reference for the techniques demonstrated on that course, and I thoroughly recommend it. It contains some very specific technical advice regarding weatherproofing. The advice is based on years of experience, so the techniques are eseential to follow to ensure longevity of the mosaic works. I was a total beginner last month, but feel competent and full of confidence with outdoor mosaic now. I certainly recommend this book for inspiration and reference for those who have done a bit of mosaic work.

5 out of 5 stars This is a keeper!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2001-12-21

This is a fabulous book! I have been a creating outdoor mosaics for over 15 years, and I have finally found a book that gets it correct! They have great step by step instructions, and suppliers listed as well as fabulous pictures! Five Stars!!!
