Wow.......2007-10-18
Not only is this a great book, but I really admire this family. There is so much useful information in this book, if it doesn't apply to you, it will give you ideas. For instance, I have no storage space in my small apartment, so it is impossible for me to shop a month at a time. I adapted their advice to plan ahead only for two weeks, which I have enough storage space for. Thank you for writing such a great book.
Love the style of this book.......2007-10-18
America's Cheapest Family is a catchy title, & is written in an engaging conversational style. I especially enjoyed the paragraphs occasionally provided by the kids. A refreshing change from other books, to have their point of view included. The ideas presented are solid, & I like the 3 different "levels" at the end of each chapter. You don't feel like a failure if you can't quite reach to such an extreme level. The stories are endearing, especially about their long vacation. There will be something for everyone to learn in this book. An amazing family.
Practical ideas for frugal living.......2007-10-10
I loved this book! I read it cover to cover and have implememted great money saving techniques into my lifestyle. I feel I am already somewhat frugal, but this book gave me great ways to teach my children and to have an even more detailed budget. I ahve implemented some of the tips to save on groceries and am so pleased! I not only am saving money but also valuable time! I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for practical money saving tips already put to the test!
It's worth reading.......2007-10-02
I'm a pretty good cheapskate myself so some of these ideas were not new to me. However, even though some of their ideas were so draconian I would never personally do them, it was interesting to read and I got a few ideas from them. I checked the book out of the library instead of buying it, proving another way to be frugal.
The budget that set us free.......2007-09-10
I read this book when my family was spiraling into financial doom. We were spending $250-350 MORE than we were earning--per month. We were looking into selling our home and only car because we couldn't afford our lifestyle. And we were totally sinking in debt.
Then I read AMERICA'S CHEAPEST FAMILY and decided to try the budget outlined in the book. It took me many hours of work at first to figure out all our expenses & debts, but it was so exciting when it started to come together. My husband and I were elated because we finally knew what was wrong with our finances. Before we put everything on paper using their worksheet, we couldn't pinpoint exactly why & how we had lost control. Once we finished listing our costs, our overspending was clear and we knew we could change it.
We've been doing this budget for 5 months now. We're now spending less than we earn. We have money set aside ahead of time for all our bills, even the big ones like car insurance. And I no longer have to pay with the payment plans--I pay the entire bill at once. We've got a now-thriving savings account too. We even pay a little extra for our mortgage each month. And we've also got money set aside for Christmas & birthdays, so we can splurge and have no credit card debt.
The one thing we do differently from the Economides' is that I pay all of our bills automatically (and free) online. It's way easier than checkbooks and you save on stamps and grief.
Utilizing their budget system saved our family. We still own our home and car and I am so grateful. Our son can still play in our yard, which means everything to me. I could see how this budget could be too much for some people... however I actually enjoy the time I spend on it. Seriously, it's all good news now! It's also our plan for the future.
This budget set us free. I never thought I'd ever say that, because you always hear how budgets restrict you, but for us it's the opposite. Now we have financial freedom.

Book Description
If you own a second home, you have the potential to boost your annual income by literally thousands of dollars by turning it into a vacation rental that earns money when you aren't using it. In this book-and-CD package, you'll learn exactly how to do it. Even if you're already using your second home as a vacation rental, the book can help you maximize the income it generates each year. It doesn't matter where you want to be along the spectrum of possibilities:
1. If you've never offered your property as a vacation rental before, you'll find all the tools, tips, and information you need to save thousands in commissions by handling everything yourself. It really isn't that hard to do.
2. If you prefer to have a rental agent or property manager take care of everything for you but aren't quite satisfied with the number of bookings you're getting, you'll discover ways to inexpensively promote your property to prospective renters from all over the world--and how to negotiate lower management commissions on the business that you bring in.
3. Or maybe you'd rather steer a middle course by handling the marketing and bookings yourself and buying cleaning and maintenance services from a property manager or from some local firm. That, too, is a viable option.
Whatever course you choose, you'll find everything you need in this book/CD package. Designed as a complete
Vacation Property Owner's Toolkit, the package consists of a 300-page book in a three-ring binder, and a CD containing crucial rental forms and checklists that you can customize and print out for your own use. The CD also contains a collection of Windows programs selected to help you manage and market your vacation property easily and effectively.
And, by the way, after you've applied what you've learned, you can probably reduce or completely eliminate any current print-advertising expenses. The approach described in this package really is that powerful.

Engaging and Full of Practical Wisdom!.......2006-09-05
We're pleased to share this review written by travel writer and vacation-rental guru Joyce Hadley Copeland, author of the "Renting Paradise" series of e-guidebooks on exceptional vacation rental properties. The review originally appeared in Ms. Copeland's Ramblings blog at her RentingParadise.com website and is posted here with her permission. -- Alfred & Emily Glossbrenner, Authors
DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME... THEN AGAIN, MAYBE YOU SHOULD
If you've had great experiences renting vacation homes--and especially if you've been swept into the welcoming (usually figurative) embrace of a particularly passionate owner--a funny thing might start happening. You might start imagining yourself doing the vacation rental thing yourself. And why not ask Alfred and Emily Glossbrenner?
If you own or are thinking of buying a vacation rental property, the Glossbrenners will show you how to pay your mortgage and make money by renting it yourself. Their 300-page book/CD seminar-in-a-box is based on what the couple learned from a decade renting a Williamsburg-style cottage on their property in Bucks County, PA. Today their second home is routinely fully booked as much as six months in advance.
The book is engaging (the Glossbrenners are successful authors with over 60 books to their credit) and full of practical wisdom, step-by-step instructions and clear examples that will guide you in maximizing the Internet to promote and rent your dream vacation or retirement home (finding the right listing sites, boosting your search engine ranking etc.).
HERE'S WHAT I ESPECIALLY LOVE: Guidelines for writing a property description! "Write from the Heart!" These smart-cookie marketers advocate infusing rental descriptions with "personality." (Because, aren't we all tired of the hype?) They talk about "painting a picture" for rental prospects... going into detail about what you (the owner) personally love about the property such as distinctive architectural details or an interesting history... weaving in off-the-beaten-path secret places you've discovered. That's music to a prospective vacation renter's ears. AND they devote a whole section to "Enhancing Your Listing With Great Photos." Hallelujah!
The Glossbrenners also include a CD containing a collection of personally-selected Windows programs to help you manage and market your vacation rental property--in what is becoming a highly competitive market niche--in your spare time.
Check out the 30-day Money-Back Guarantee. But also check out the Glossbrenners' promise: "Regardless of your rental rate, and regardless of season, if you get just one extra booking as a result of what we have to teach you, this vacation rental owner's training package will have paid for itself many times over. And it will continue to do so year after year from now on."
Pssst: Check with your accountant. You may be able to write the whole thing off as a business expense.

The Bible for Vacation Rentals By Owner.......2006-02-25
I have read countless books, magazines, travel guides, marketing manuals to better help me effectively market my vacation rental home. I only wish I read this book first! Emily and Alfred Glossbrenner's book is THE BIBLE of ALL Vacation Rental "How To" books. Skip the "Cliff Notes" and go straight to the source! Since incorporating their tried and true marketing approach, my summer vacation rental property is booked for the summer of 2006 and it is only February!
The best tool for a new vacation rental owner!.......2005-08-02
I have read every book in this category (at least every book that is available on Amazon) and have to say that Glossbrenners' book is the best guide for a vacation rental owner, especially someone just starting out. Alfred and Emily guide you through all of the minute detals of setting up the rental, from the right type of furnishings to the beach towels, pet policies, etc. They carefully explain the possibilities available to a vacation rental owner with Internet advertisement, how to choose the sites to advertise on and go into great detail with setting up listings on the 4 largest US vacation rental listing sites. The CD that comes with the book contains forms that are a great help for creating your first rental agreement or a "getting ready" check list, among others.
We have bought our first rental a little over a year ago and were fully booked for the season within 6 weeks from going online, based on suggestions we implemented from Glossbrenners book. We purchased two more properties this year and once again, having used the basic techniques and tools from Alfred and Emily's book, all 3 properties were fully booked in 2005. This occupancy rate is significantly higher than average for our area. I credit this book with our initial and continuing success.
Thank you, Alfred and Emily!
This book is excellent for renting out your vacation home!.......2005-04-22
We have decided to rent out our San Diego home this summer. Thanks to this book, we are already ahead of schedule; we have 4 out of the 8 weeks booked. My friends in San Diego are impressed and are now working at renting out their houses as well.
The book is well-organized and steps you through step-by-step on how to rent out your vacation property yourself. It is well written and explains everything in the right level of detail.
The biggest problem that I have now is that my friends keep borrowing the book, I need to tell them to buy their own.
Regards,
David Brehm

Very Helpful.......2006-06-26
I found this book very helpful in making my transition to a SAHM. I especialy like the section on cleaning and making your house run smoothly with little effort.
Recommended in conjunction with Miserly Moms.......2004-02-25
What I liked best about this book:
1. The chapter on contingency plans. Yes, it's obvious that it's a good idea to have a backup-plan in case the working parent gets laid off, there's a large unexpected expense, etc. Nevertheless, I found it helpful to read the authors' experiences regarding such emergencies which happened in their families and to consider the various ideas and options presented. My own contingency plan was that I worked fifteen months longer than I wanted to and progressively worked up to putting my entire paycheck in savings; by the time I quit, we had enough money set aside to pay our living expenses for an entire year, if that became necessary.
2. The chapter on stay-at-home blues. I appreciated the authors' candor in describing the pros and cons of staying home. A humorous (but true) example they give is that you won't necessarily fall in love with cleaning the bathroom and once home, you may do it more often than you did before. Most importantly, they're honest about the feeling of isolation that can creep up on a stay-at-home parent and how one can deal with it.
3. They "tell it like it is". As they say, unless one of the parents' incomes is completely disposable, it is going to be necessary to make some sacrifices somewhere. Something will have to go in order to keep the family's financial boat afloat. My family experienced this period of adjustment while saving for our emergency fund; by the time I left work, we were already used to managing on one income and it wasn't so difficult.
I address the chapters on the "cons" of staying home specifically because if most people pick up a book like this in the first place, it's probably because they already want to be home with their child(ren). What they want to know is how to achieve that goal and what to expect along the way. I found this book a terrific primer on how to get off the fast track in the smoothest possible manner.
The reason I recommended this book in conjunction with Miserly Moms by Jonni McCoy is that I feel the latter book presents a larger share of nuts-and-bolts information on how to reduce expenses. Jonni McCoy once worked as a senior buyer for Apple Computers, among other firms, and you can see this real-world experience in how she analyzes and approaches the issue of frugality.
Great Advice for Moms Weighing the Stay At Home Option.......2002-08-16
I really liked this book because it gave practical advice that seemed realistic and was supported by personal stories and testimonials.
Nothing new - save your money.......2002-03-01
The title of this book caused me to snatch it off the shelf. I'm just glad it was a library shelf rather than a bookstore shelf.
I found the information extremely obvious and learned very little.
Basically, if you want to stay home, cut the extras. If you buy a... coffee, pastry, eat out and shop every day, well, then, cut it out. And if you normally buy convenience foods at the grocery, get a manicure every week and buy expensive clothes, then stop. That's the basic summary of the book.
I have already made these obvious cuts, as well as counting in work-related costs such as transporation, dry cleaning, etc., so it taught me absolutely nothing new...
Wonderful Book.......2001-12-29
Great ideas.
The writers are not pushy about anyone becoming a stay at home parent.
They are not unbiased (staying home with your kids is best for them) but they stay as well balanced as possible.
This book is helping make it possible for my HUSBAND to stay home with our 4 kids !!!
We love it!!

Needs to be updated!.......2007-06-10
While I liked McCullough's encouraging tone and some of her ideas, this book needs to be revised for modern times. Written 27 years ago, some examples like the to do item "type ditto" and how a friend saved worktime by getting an extra-long cord on her phone are so outdated that they provided a few unintended laughs. A better purchase might be the Messie books by Sandra Felton, or for household management, the Flylady book.
Dated, But Some Good Information.......2006-11-17
This book was just okay. There was some good information but not very much that was new or not available from other sources. I love household and organization books, so I enjoyed it, but many readers might be looking for something more current.
Too old fashioned.......2006-08-15
This book had some good ideas if it were 1970. It's very outdated. I'm sure it was a good book when it was still current, but in 2006, it's just a a waste of time and money.
simply life-changing.......2003-10-22
I bought this book at a homeschool conference about 15 years ago. It literally changed my life. I have fond memories of sitting down at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee and my "Bonnie" book. Bonnie became like a friend, offering great advice and encouragement. Her writing style is warm and uplifting. She made me want to succeed at organizing my home. I learned how to organize my kitchen cabinets, and ever since my mom has recommended ME to organize the kitchen when someone in the family moves! And I was the family "messy!" Her suggestion on implementing Minimum Maintenance made the difference for me in keeping my house clean and presentable. I highly recommend this book for anyone who struggles as I did with managing all the STUFF/CHORES in her home.
Wonderfully Helpful for the Disorganised Homemaker.......2003-06-06
I just loved this book. I would give it ten stars if I could. It was so full of down to earth and helpful advice and very entertaining to read. There were hints on clutter clearing and how to tackle a home that has got a bit out of control. Lists of daily jobs and what Bonnie calls minimum maintenance were a great help. If you find it hard to keep on top of the house and it seems forever in a cluttered mess (like mine) this is the book for you.

Not helpful.......2007-10-12
I was looking for a book with some pictures to help my wife give me haircuts. The only methods used were funky, didn't have the standard male haircut in it
Will I be working at Vidal Sasoon anytime soon?.......2007-07-20
I'm not sure if anyone can learn to master a skill from a book; could you really learn a language or how to cook by reading about it, especially if you're a beginner? But you can get some basic skills and I found this book to be a good beginning. The photos are clear as are the directions. I cut my own hair from this book (not the easiest or the brightest accomplishment) and it wasn't the worst haircut I ever had; it was pretty decent. I actually got a couple of compliments on it. But it was a very basic cut and there are only pictures for a few styles. I have fine, medium-length curly hair and there was no picture for that cut. The author does suggest variations on the basic styles she does give, but without the pictures and the step-by step instructions, I felt it was a little too complicated to chance. Also, the styles are really basic and somewhat dated. I could have followed the style for long, curly hair, although it was for thick hair, but the style was awful even for the 1970s, when it was in fashion.
But you can easily learn to give a basic cut or trim friends and family members' hair in between visits to the salon, save a bit of money and feel proud that you can do something for yourself. And if you really love it then you can go and enroll in beauty school. As for me, I am going to buy a French language CD.
Tons of photos, easy to follow; styles are simple but timeless.......2007-04-02
My husband's hair grows faster than mushrooms on a damp night, so you can imagine how much it would cost to keep his hair trimmed. He used to just wear it long but that's no longer practical. I had been cutting his hair, but all I could do was give him a buzz cut with the clippers, or this strange cut that made him *look* like a mushroom.
I guess I wanted more inspiration.
I liked this book because it covers hair styles for men, women and children. Most of the styles are simple enough for beginners but there are also more advanced techniques included such as layering and blending. Also, the styles are not trendy at all. You won't find the Rachel cut, or the Farah Fawcett shag. Instead these hairstyles are classic and should endure for years and years to come. Also included in this book:
* How to do bangs, blunt and curved.
* How to do a blunt cut for short, medium or long hair
* How to do layered cuts for short, medium and long hair
* Children's haircuts for boys and girls
* Four classic men's hair cuts
* Hair preparation, cutting angles and how to establish guides
I'm a visual learner and the tons of photos really helped. I also liked that the photos were of real people with all shapes and sizes of faces, with all types of hairs. Not the professional models where every hair cut would look fabulous on them.
An added bonus is a section that gives recipes for shampoos, rinses and hair moisturizing treatments. The author argues that it is sometimes cheaper to make your own haircare products and that many manufactured products have a petrolatum base which can build up in your hair.
All in all, I have been very satisfied with this book. It covers everything about the basics and hair care to boot! It does not have a huge selection of styles to choose from, however for my purposes, it is more than adequate.
Basic.......2006-08-27
This is a good picture book but very basic. It's enough for me but if you want tons of styles to choose from this one is not for you.
This is a very well done book with color pictures.......2004-10-03
Note: My review is for the 2002 Edition. There is also a 2005.
I ordered this book from Amazon. I feel this is a great book considering that most haircutting books use illustrations to show how to cut hair and this one uses pictures of people. The book also has some recipes for making your own products. I also like that this book is written in layman's terms so anyone can learn. It may not have more advanced cuts but it's a quality book. You can't get much better info unless you watch a video or take a class. It has step by step instructions for the following,
For Children:
Girls' one-length cut / Girls' medium one-length cut / Boys' one-length short cut.
For Women:
Short one-length cut with bangs / Medium one-length cut with bangs / Long one-length cut / Short layered cut /
Short layered wispy cut / Short one length cut with layered back /
Medium layered cut / Long layered cut.
For Men:
Short cut / Short layered cut / Medium layered cut / Clipper cut (very short).
There are also plenty of pictures of other styles that aren't step by step.

Good book.......2006-08-23
I am a Stay at Home Mom and found many of the tips helpful. It is a little slow and boring at times to just sit and read but it does have many helpful tips and I would still recommend it.
The Personal Search for Contentment in a Materialistic Society.......2005-07-18
Do you sense that life is going by and you're not really living it true to yourself or your personal convictions? If so, you may be suffering from spiritual bankruptcy...While we can't ever free ourselves fully from all of life's demands, we can discover a sense of balance in our lives. Or we can identify ways to shift between the two extremes - finding a time and a place in our lives for contemplation, and then alternating that with other times of busyness and distraction." ~Deborah Taylor-Hough
In order to simplify her life, Deborah Taylor-Hough had to rethink her entire lifestyle. With five children and medical bills that loomed over her, she made some tough decisions that required her to put away her pride and look more realistically at how she intended to survive. Her courage is inspirational and the decisions she made showed that her priorities were her family and her commitment to her belief system.
If you are dealing with a lack of meaning even with great wealth or societal emptiness despite an elegant lifestyle, this book takes a look at survival on the edge of bankruptcy and a search for contentment in a less than materialistic lifestyle.
If you long for a life of contentment, it may be a life of simplified choices and a life where family becomes more important than keeping up with every other family on the block.
While this isn't as far as building your own house or "Walden Pond," it is a realistic view of life and how to avoid falling into debt by taking practical and necessary actions like avoiding the temptations at malls or not watching certain channels on TV.
Deborah Taylor-Hough is a beautiful soul who has written a very practical guide for women who want to find a new balance in their lives. She also gives advice about tripling many recipes and freezing meals for the future (see her cookbooks), like before you give birth to a baby or know you are going to go through a time of stress. There are also recipes for making your own instant coffee mixes and homemade dry onion soup mix. Now I know why one house had closets that were scented with cloves - it keeps away moths.
If you have children you may enjoy the recipes for craft dough, soap crayons and homemade paper crafts. If you want to refresh your laundry or even make your own laundry soap, this author has the recipes. I have used her recipe for Spa Milk Bath, but I also use essential oils. I found that sea salt is relatively inexpensive at a health food store and even the addition of oatmeal in a cheesecloth bag and buttermilk can make a completely wonderful spa experience.
This book encourages you to be happier with less possessions and more quality family time. When you remember your childhood, what are the happy things you remember? I remember running around barefoot, swimming in African rivers and eating lemon meringue pie. I didn't care about the size of our house or the clothes I wore. I remembered the freedom to enjoy life and how my mother taught me to make strawberry jam.
Other great ideas:
Family cookbooks
Debt proofing your holidays
Winter picnics
I loved this idea because it reinforces the ideas that happiness has nothing to do with how much money you earn and it has everything to do with being creative and maximizing the talents you have and rearranging your priorities.

An excellent money-saving tool.......2005-06-03
Readers gain various tips and insights into saving time and money with this book. Various tasks become more simple and less expensive. This book speaks more on how to save money than on how to free yourself from the greed and dependency that it provokes.
What A Helpful book!.......2003-10-29
This a a great book with ideas and time savings for me. The title so describes the book, good choice! I love it!
Simply from the heart.......2003-05-23
I really liked the book, written straight fromn the heart. Though it's relatively not so thick but 'it got a little bit of everything'. The appendix cited a number of recommended resources that are also valuable to know. It made me wish I could be like those people who have attained such comfort through 'simple living'.

Helpful.......2006-11-10
I am currently wrestling with an ailing and unwieldy budget, and this book is really helping me to make sense out of it.
Bonnie's Household Budget Book.......2006-02-01
This was a well planned out and I plan to start using it for my everyday expenses.
Helpful Budgeting Basics.......2000-06-08
Over all the book is helpful, and the work sheets are detailed enough to seperate expenses, however, unless you have kept fairly detailed records for several months, you will not be able to accurately complete the worksheets. Be prepared to spend time with prep work before beginning.
Great way to budget your household expenses.......1998-11-19
I have been using this workbook for 5 months and I love it. It helps me get a good view to where our household funds are going. I highly recommend it.
Wow! I now know where all my money goes........1998-08-24
I bought the Household Budget Book when my credit card debt started piling up. What a difference it has made. It has helped me evaluate where I spend my money. Not only do I record my monthly expenses, income, and investments I can view my yearly living expenses, auto maintenance, and household inventory. I finally save the money monthly I had always promised myself I would. The back provides dollar stretching tips I've found useful. I've just purchased my second copy for next year.I never thought tracking my spending could be so much fun.

A great step-by-step guide!.......2003-09-03
This book is an amazing tool in turning your hobby into a profitable business. The author covers everything from 'the idea' to actual business laws, regulations, finances and workings.
As someone who has no business background or experience selling wholesale/retail, I found this book exeptional in its detail and content!
Highly recommended!

pretty good.......2004-01-02
This is the first book of this nature i bought, and can honestly say its awesome. It tells you everything you will need to make a novelty license including, different printers, paper, computer software, templates, etc and where to get these items, it goes ionto great detail and walks you step-by-step through the whole process.
A very misleading book.......2002-03-05
This book has nothing to do with other ID. This book is ALL about making fake driver's license.
Granted this book goes into nice detail on how to design and make them but it fails to let you in on some details. New York and Florida have PLASTIC driver's license. With a Florida license it looks like a credit card with a black data strip in the back. The police officers, when they pull you over, will swipe your card through their machines and pull up all of your information. The idea was to save on time when pulling someone over to write up a ticket. With New York licenses, the cards of made of a flexible plastic with the picture digitized on them. Getting your hands on either of these materials would be highly difficult. All it would take is one astute person from that state or someone who regularly sees multiple state IDs to catch on that its not a real ID.
you gotta be kidding.......2002-01-05
Sure, make an outdated license.. get busted and go
to jail. Try drinking at a place that doesn't
ask for ID. Duh?
It's a book about making PERFECT driver's licenses. PERIOD!.......2001-02-12
The previous reviewer is half-right . . . . the book does not even come close to focussing on making "Other IDs". It's all about making fake driver's licenses--PERFECT fake driver's licenses. That's why I bought it and that's why I'm VERY happy with the purchase. If you want to make a fake driver's license, this is the book for you.
The Best Fake ID Book On The Market!.......2001-02-12
This book is excellent. I have read every book on manufacturing false identification out there. No other book guides you through the process of manufacturing fake ID as completely as this one does. From finding the proper supplies, to tips on how to use the ID so you won't get busted, it is all in here. I especially liked the chapter on evaluating your finished ID. If you are even thinking about trying to make a fake ID, BUY THIS BOOK!

Terrific!.......2000-10-05
A terrific handbook. It gave me all of the information I needed and in a manner that was easy to understand. Highly recommended. I agree with the reader from New York. Decisions like this require expert advice.
Excellent.......2000-03-09
This book is an excellent overview of a complex subject. Written in a clear, straight-forward style, Smith's book can be an indispensible companion to buying a first or last home. I haven't read the House Buying for Dummies book that was mentioned by an earlier reviewer, but, when I'm confronted with the bigeest purchase of my life, I'd rather stick with someone who has a bit more obvious expertise.
Informative, but wordy.......1999-04-15
Reading this book was much like reading a college textbook. The information therein was helpful, but the style was wordy and technical. The book could have been more concise. As a reference guide, I preferred the book House Buying for Dummies.
