5 out of 5 stars Buying a used car? Read this first.......2007-10-06

Once again they created and easy to use book. I've consulted this book since 1973 when ever I was about to buy a new or used car.

5 out of 5 stars Great Resource for those in the market for a used car!!.......2007-09-07

This guide tells you everything you need to know about the used/pre-owned buying process, though you might be surprised at the results of many popular cars. It has a side by side comparison of the certified-pre-owned programs, warning signs when looking at a car, etc.

4 out of 5 stars some difficult graphics.......2007-05-13

Overall an excellent guide for purchasing used cars. My only complaint are the hard-to-visually-scan graphics they use for rating reliability history and crash test results. A reference should be easier to scan without having to constantly refer back to a legend that is buried somewhere in the front of the book.

5 out of 5 stars Best Guide for Used Car Buyers.......2007-03-17

Consumer Reports provides a vital function in today's uber-materialist culture. They report objectively about the many products we purchase. In so doing they cut through all of the hype, distortion, and outright lies of the marketers, ad-men, and other assorted hucksters who bombard us constantly.

This guide is a powerful tool for helping both the new and experienced car buyer with the difficult task of sorting out the lemons from the cream puffs. It provides detailed information on each car and then summarizes the best used car buys and the worst used car buys -- for those with limited attention spans like me.

I could not recommend this guide more highly. It is an essential part of the decision making process of used car buyers.

5 out of 5 stars Clearly Communicates Used Car Information.......2007-01-18

Buying a used car? Buy the "Consumer Reports Used Car Buying Guide" first.

Rather than depend on the advice of semi-knowledgeable friends, a mechanic biased toward a car maker and not a specific vehicle, or by looking to see what your neighbor drives, you can depend on this.

I bought my last two cars using earlier guides.

In it, I found lists of "Good Bets," which are cars the authors consider to perform well over the years. That is guiding my purchase. I won't buy a car not listed there. I also found lists dividing reliable cars by price range, which cars have had recalls, unreliable models (by year), and detailed descriptions of the pros and cons of each vehicle.

That's not all. There are also articles on safety, buying strategies, batteries, insurance, towing, depreciation, tires and child car seats.

It is not a complicated book. It is straight to the point, with minimal car jargon. Novices like myself are not overwhelmed by information I am not concerned with.

I am interested in safety, performance, cost of repair and related information. I found all of this here.

I fully recommend "Consumer Reports Used Car Buying Guide." I am confident that because I have read it and will refer to it while I shop for an auto online, I am prepared to save money and to buy a better vehicle.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Car Buyer's MUST READ Manual.......2007-04-16

This book is a must read. Packed with info I did not find in other material, fun to read (amazing for a car-buying guide). Trust me, if you don't want to be the patsy at the dealership poker game, you want to read this book first. It will save you thousands of dollars.

4 out of 5 stars Good info, but the online stuff is overblown ..........2006-05-14

This book provides some good information on buying cars, and many of the tips suggested are spot on. But when it comes to the role of computers and the Internet in this equation, the author really needs to do more research for the next edition of this book. I work for one of the bigger online car-buying sites as well as providing support for car dealerships in getting their inventory online, and I thought it important to clear the air about a few things.
First of all, the way the author presents things, you would think that if you were to visit autotrader.com (or a similar site) with cookies turned on, suddenly every dealer in town knows your life history. But I'm here to tell you that these sites aren't nearly that sophisticated, and neither are the dealers. In fact, some dealers still keep their car inventory on Excel spreadsheets! And for the ones that do have some sort of server for managing inventory and sales, many of them don't even know how to use them beyond the basic essentials. In fact, I myself know more about these systems than do most dealers, and I've never personally worked with any of them. Trust me when I say that, contrary to what this book will tell you, dealers (or at least none of the ones I've seen) don't have some elaberate network of supercomputers to track your every move online. Heck, most of them could barely manage a Google search on their own :)
In fact, as far as the web is concerned, dealers won't pay attention to you unless you actually go online and fill out a form requesting a price quote or further information about a car, and then they only have as much data as you give them. Once you fill out the form, your request for information goes into a 'lead management tool' (one of these I also provide support for), which is little more than an Outlook-style web interface where dealers can track their dealings with you. For example, they can log any email, phone, or personal meetings, etc that they have with you, along with reminders of appointments to test drive a car and other important events. But my question to you is, since you have obviously expressed an interest in one or more of their vehicles, why WOULDN'T they want to keep a log of their correspondance with you? It's not like they're going to sell the information. In fact, as soon as the correspondance ends (either in you buying a car or doing business somewhere else), they'll either mark you as 'sold' or 'dead' respectively and that's pretty much the end of it, untl/unless you write them again. In fact, the worst that can happen is you may get occassional spam from the dealer (something I'm not particularly happy that dealers do) about sales events and such, and you can even opt out of those.

All that being said, even with the advent of car-buying websies, the best way to get a good deal on a car is still to go to the dealership and haggle (and this book will show you how to do that). If you do buy a car online without ever having visited a dealership, you're going to pay way more than you should 99% of the time. I have the luxury of seeing both the sticker and invoice prices on cars for many dealerships and it's not uncommon to see them differ by thousands of dollars. A tip I'd like to share with you (and I don't think this is in the book) is that if you find a particular option or color on a car that the dealership doesn't have, even if you're willing to live without that option or color, tell the dealer that you MUST have said item and tell them it's a deal-breaker if you can't get it. You'd be amazed at how fast the price comes down :) Oh, and if you want to get the extended warranty, NEVER do so at the price they quote you. I was able to get $800 knocked off the price without even expending any effort.

In short, though most of these websites may be crap, don't let this book scare you into looking around if you wish. This is especially true for auto manufacturer websites, as looking on these sites will give you a lot of useful information about the car, such as what options come with various model packages. The only thing you need to concern yourself with is that I would STRONLY advise NOT using Internet Explorer as your primary web browser (try Firefox or Opera if you are on Windows). The reason why is not because of anything specifically to do with looking for cars online; it's just that IE is a very insecure browser and you're potentially putting yourself at risk every time you use it. 5 out of 5 stars 20 yrs since I first read this, and it still works.......2005-09-26

I first read this book back in 1985 when I bought a Mazda 626. Got it for exactly 3% over the dealer's invoice, and this was before the day when they'd share that very readily. I've bought several cars over the years with the knowledge I've gained from this book and I've NEVER felt taken. The sources of data are even better now than they were in 1985, so you can make sure you're not taken ever. What I've found is that as soon as the dealers know you know their cost and what's a fair price, you get a great deal fast. It's also one of the most entertaining books I've ever read that was teaching me something. Some of the best money you'll ever spend because it will pay you back 100 fold.

5 out of 5 stars Buy at your own risk w/o this book.......2005-04-27

I read the 1st or 2nd revision of this book and bought my first new car in '94. It saved me $2500.00 on my Nissan Altima. I still have the car today. I have bought 2 other cars since then and it saved me money everytime. I am getting ready to buy another car and can't find my copy of the book. I am going to purchase the book again to brush up on my car buying skills. I am sure the dealer's have come up with some new tricks to get into my wallet in the last 12 years. I recommend this book to all my friends who are buying cars. Besides being informative, the book is humorous and is a fun read.

5 out of 5 stars This Book Saved Me $700 Over The Dealers "LOWEST PRICE".......2005-04-13

If you are buying a car you need to get this book. The price of the book is nothing compared to what it will save you! The book saved me an additional $700 on the best price the dealer had offered me which was $1,100 off his asking price, for a total savings of $1800!

Not only did I save money, I got the car that I wanted, not the car that the salesman and manager wanted me to buy!

Knowing now what I learned from this book, I would have paid over $100 for for this book!

I like how the book had "stories" to illustrate the points. that made it much easier to visualize.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for buying a new car.......2007-05-07

This is an excellent book to read prior to buying a car. This book helped me to research the car I wanted to buy before going to the dealership by giving me helpful internet sites to find the invoice price on my car and other facts. It also instructed me on negotiating strategies to use when I sat down with the car salesman. True to the books description the salesman used the same tricks the book predicted he would. Highballing the initial price, stalling, stating he was going to lose money on the sale, bringing his boss in, etc. Reading this book allowed me not to be to eager and to be willing to leave if the salesman being cooperative on the price. This resulted in my purchasing a 2007 Honda Civic Hybrid for $11 over the invoice price. I also bought my car insurance using one of the websites suggested by the book.

3 out of 5 stars Outdated material.......2005-09-01

I purchased this book in August of 2005. [...] Should have returned it, but most of the info. is still worth while knowing. The copyright of the book I received is 1998. So when it comes to any internet purchasing or research info., the book is lacking. It still contains a lot of important tips to know before buying a car. I'm sure the most recent edition is great.

5 out of 5 stars This text offers excellent information.......2004-09-06

This text offers information about buying a car from start to finish, from thinking about what you want, to insurance, to checking your car, to financing, to negotiating with dealers, and refers you to other great online and text sources for more information.

Excellent and well worth it, even for the most knowledgeable car buyers. Everyone will learn at least ten great things from this book.

Book Description

For the first-time airplane buyer, this book is an invaluable resource and guide. The award-winning author offers money-saving information on everything a private pilot needs to consider before and after buying a plane: selection, purchasing, financing, hangaring, maintenance, legal issues, and much more.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Had to buy it!.......2007-03-18

I picked this book up at the local library while I was looking for my first plane. After using up all my renewals and continually referring to it, I had to buy. It goes into much more detail than other books about what to expect during and after purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Everything You Need to Know.......2006-05-03

Simply put, if you're even thinking of buying an airplane you should buy this book first. This book reeks of experience. It's by Ron Wanttaja, who received the 1992 Aviation/Space Writers' Association Award of Excellence. He's an excellent writer and is very knowledgable about owning an airplane. All aspects of owning a plane from deciding what to buy to the real world operating expenses, the new Light Sport Aircraft category, inspections, everything.

The tone of the book is on saving money. He talks for instance about setting a limit of $30K for the purchase of a plane. He talks about the costs of a tie down vs a hanger and gives examples from his local area which is around Seattle. You may not have the financial issues as a primary concern, but many of the same subjects apply without regard to their cost -- what to look for when you inspect a used plane for instance.

I'd list the chapters in the book, but think it's better to just say that every aspect you can think of (and more) is here. And, oh yes, this is the new second edition of the book that updates the information on a lot of areas.

5 out of 5 stars I keep coming back to this book, It's worth every penny!.......2004-01-03

This book is an informative, easy to read, engaging look at buying and owning an aircraft. It walks you right through the different types available, and explains many of the advantages and pitfalls of the different types (antique, classic, homebuilt, modern, etc) of aircraft available. It goes on to explain what you can and can't do in owner maintanance. This book shows how to do what you can do, with photos and illustrations to back up the text in many instances. Overall, of all the airplane ownership books I've got, this is the one that I keep coming back to, it's well done, interesting, and informative!

3 out of 5 stars Focused on doing it 'on the cheap'.......2004-01-01

This book assumes that the buyer is most concerned about the cost of ownership and how to do it 'on the cheap'. If this is not your situation, then this book may not be that useful to you. The case studies where interesting.

3 out of 5 stars Good first step if you're considering owning a plane........1998-07-12

This book helps narrow down the field as you consider buying or owning an airplane. Gives details about cost and offers real world examples of operating expenses (aircraft specification tables were particulary helpful). Covers what to look for, pre-purchase inspections, and paperwork needed to buy and register aircraft. Well worth the money if you're considering buying your first airplane.

    Book Description

A glossary for experienced and new professionals in supply chain software, operations, logistics, or warehousing. There are thousands acronyms ("buzzwords") that exist today. This handbook takes the mystery out of those and explains what they mean!

This glossary takes the mystery out of the keywords used in multiple verticals - especially software, warehousing, standards, transportation, logistics, organizations, and government. These keywords are normally abbreviations and acronyms - therefore we have primarily focused on these.

This glossary will put a current or new practitioner on the "fast track" learning curve of the supply chain language utilized today. It enables them to get "up to speed" quicker!

Edition 3 has TWICE the information, with new & expanded sections. Recognized experts in the logistics, operations, and warehousing fields have contributed greatly to this new edition! Computer, Warehousing, Transportation, Standards, EDI, and Business keywords are enhanced. NEW sections include RFID, Incoterms, EDIFACT, Government, Conveyor, Material Safety Data Sheets, and Pallets word types.

Highly recommended for new supply chain students, professionals, management, and support staff (software firms, integration firms, consulting firms) that need to understand the "supply chain language".

4 out of 5 stars An Enthusiastic Review.......2007-10-01

I came to the project on an executive level having little to no expertise in Warehouse Software Management (WMS). From the onset of my reading "Selecting Warehouse Software from WMS & ERP Providers" it proved to be everything and far more than I could have ever begin to appreciate. But, when I became armed with the companion work Supply Chain Terminology, I was empowered to understand the language of the industry. Hence, intuition fueled by grasping the concepts with added clarity allowed for our project to advance in a far more professional and efficient manner; discussions amongst team members was enhanced and leadership could be more effectively provided. We are now positioned to accomplish what many other reputed multi-million dollar enterprise have not been able to achieve in its supply chain software solutions, because we have an executive staff who has invested the time and have had the good fortune of sound advice and business practices from the Philip Obal series of reading materials.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent addition to my library.......2003-11-12

The terminology in this industry seems endless. So it's great to have something for reference when unfamiliar terms or phrases are brought into conversation. I would recommend this for anyone who wants to gain familiarity with the buzzwords of the industry. It seems like a perfect tool for college graduates who don't want to be caught off guard in a job interview. And it also is great for someone like me, who's been in the business for a while. Easy read.

    Sincerely,
    Rick Howard

5 out of 5 stars Helpful to both new & experienced practitioners.......2003-11-05

The glossary is very comprehensive, and helpful both to people new to the industry as well as those who have been in it for several years. Hard to think of any other place where one could find a compilation so comprehensive. Great reference manual.

5 out of 5 stars Concise, Current, and Very Handy.......2003-10-06

I have found Mr. Obal's Glossary of Supply Chain Terminology invaluable in keeping current and specific with the constantly changing Supply Chain lingo.

It is as concise and current as any reference book on this subject that I have seen. I find the EDI Code definitions particularly helpful.

Very highly recommended especially for logistics professionals who must communicate across companies, industries, stages, and modes in the supply chain.

4 out of 5 stars Great introduction to ultraligths........2006-04-21

I am just getting intrested in the fascinating world of ultralights, and this, as the first book that I read on the subject, gave me a very wide insight on what to expect, where to start, and touched every subject just enough. It is a good guide for starters like me, it spells out what to do and not do and how to do it wright from the begining. The countless grammar erros are a little annoying, but I guess not nessesary to keep you in the air.

This book is an excellent resource. Ignore sao530 who doesn't mention anything about the book, but only has issues with the fact that everyone else loved the book. With the information here, I saved over $5,000 on my used 2002 BMW 530i.

1 out of 5 stars Did anyone notice all previous reader reviews give this 5 stars?.......2006-04-07

I don't know, it just seems strange to me that all "reader reviews" of this book give it 5 stars. Doesn't anyone think this book could be improved, even a little bit?? The previous reviews are so spectacular they almost sound like a SALESMAN might have written them ;) Could it be that the author has left all these other reviews of his own book? Naa, that couldn't be, could it?

5 out of 5 stars This $15 book saved me thousands.......2005-11-18

This is the best book of its kind-bar none. Burke gives very simple, easy-to-follow advice. He not only describes the sales techniques being used on you, but describes how to effectively combat them and give yourself the advantage in negotiating. I combined three of his techniques (waiting for a rainy day, showing up at the end of the month, and taking a test drive and bringing the car back just after the dealership closed) to great effect. I got the price I wanted and I didn't have to negotiate hardly at all because the salesmen just wanted to go home. Burke's book may be the best $15 I ever spent.

    5 out of 5 stars You can't go wrong.......2004-04-27

You can not go wrong with this book. I don't know how many times I have read it. The information in this book is something you won't get anywhere else. It is well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Don't leave home without it!.......2003-08-02

No one should buy a car without first reading this book. It's complete and well-organized. It includes formulas, resource lists, samples, scenarios, advice, and every aspect of car buying that you could imagine. And it's an easy read. Read it, study it, write notes on your sleeve, then go to the dealer and buy your car at your price.
