Customer Reviews:
Needs Updating.......2007-05-12
Contains some decent tips but disappointing overall. Lacks treatment of the issue of restricted funds, essential to non-profit budgeting. Does not provide insight into effective use of spreadsheet programs like Excel which are essential to budget building. Does not show modern methods for calculating overheads like the FTE system. Contains a plethora of forms that can be used in various stages of the budget building process.
To the point.......2007-03-25
The book gives you straight forward step-by-step directions for developing a budgeting process that allows you to move the key budgeting tasks down into the organization to those who will do the tasks being budgeted. You are given informative examples of the key steps in budgeting and lots of forms to adapt and use in your organization. One of the best books on budgeting I have read.
Excellent Purchase.......2007-01-04
Being a new treasurer in a newly formed non-profit organization, this book is extremely helpful in planning and executing asset management. It was recommended by the national organization's board and it is well worth the purchase purchase price.
Excellent Resource.......2006-11-07
This book has been very helpful to our fiscal staff and me. I have used it to assist our department directors prepare their budgets for the first time. It has saved me hours of work.
Budget Management .......2006-04-23
When I purchased this book I thought it might be outdated for my organization. I was wrong - this is an excellent budget WORKBOOK. The author did an excellent job in bringing the complex and problematic issues of budgeting for Nonprofit organizations and takes you step by step into the process. The book covers everything from the start of the budget to financial reporting of the budget. This book also provides numerous samples of budgets. If your a budget manager or director - this book should give a fresh new way to look at the budgeting process.

-Paula Van Ness, President and CEO, Make-A-Wish Foundation® of America
"After thirty-three years of managing in the nonprofit sector, I find I could have used the information in Streetsmart when I first began my career. The book is a must-read for anyone interested in the effective management of nonprofit organizations."
-George W. Kessinger, President and CEO, Goodwill Industries International, Inc.
"The first edition of McLaughlin's book was a masterpiece-clearly written, concise, and insightful. These traits also characterize the Second Edition. This is an excellent text for students and also a reference that every nonprofit professional should have on their bookshelf."
-Norman A. Dolch, PhD, Director of the Nonprofit Programs and Professor of Sociology
Louisiana State University in Shreveport
"Tom McLaughlin contributes a valuable tool to those working for the betterment of society in the nonprofit fields: an important, highly readable, intelligent review of those issues which determine success and failure. All too often, well-meaning nonprofit managers find their organizations in constant crisis due to their mission-focus and mission-drive to the detriment of sound financial management. Streetsmart Financial Basics is a fast way of balancing management skills short of returning for an MBA."

Book Description
This is the most challenging time for public management that I have seen in my 35 years of public and non-profit service. The ?survivors,' ten years from now, will be working in systems they could not possibly imagine now. They will have gotten there not just by luck, but by the full commitment of all members of their organizations and by dramatically different methods of public engagement. This book is an excellent resource for starting that journey and for assessing the progress of efforts to date.
?James Kunde, executive director, Coalition to Improve Management in State and Local Government
Creating High-Performance Government Organizations presents practical advice and tools that managers and innovators at every level of government can use in molding their organizations into results-oriented, mission-driven operations. Developed by a top-notch author team under the auspices of The Alliance for Redesigning Government, these recommAndations are rooted in the authors' years of experience in the public and private sectors, and thorough research into the theory and practice of organizational transformation.
The more than three dozen cases presented here will help you understand what high-performance organizations are and develop a clearer understanding of the preconditions to major change, the steps essential to getting started, and ways to overcome common roadblocks along the way.

Too the Point with Steps That Make Sense.......2000-05-04
As a manager of a medium size agency in a fairly large city, I've looked at a lot of these kinds of books. Too often they are fed-land oriented or full of impractical or incomplete ideas. This one wasn't and it has been very useful as we pursue a strategic reform of our management systems.
Helpful, Concise, Coherent.......2000-03-16
I've been working on rego in my federal agency for seven years. While this book had no great surprises for me, it was a useful resource to think through what we've done so far and what remains to be done.
Usual , General, Superficial.......2000-01-14
Having finished the book, I asked about what I learned .. nothing new. Superficial, usual and step-by-step path. I advice an excellent and strong book that is Creating Public Value : Strategic Management in Government by Moore...
high performance concrete.......1999-11-02
I'm Korean studant.. Please, give me some information about high performance concrete.... Have a nice days......
Good source of ideas - challenging AND concise.......1999-03-04
This is one of a couple of books I've found that have proven to be helpful in both my day-to-day work and in trying to think more strategically and long-term about helping the city agency I work for perform at a significantly higher level.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent intro to accounting/finance for the novice........1999-08-30
As a new manager of a small/medium-sized nonprofit organization (20 staff), I needed to get up to speed quickly on accounting and finance principles, but didn't have time to take a course. This book was a great help. It's written in a conversation style, not in dry "accountant-speak," and gives the reader a good overview, with examples of all major accounting and finance concepts you are likely to run across. It even had a floppy disk with a variety of simple spreadsheets for you to learn from as you walked through each chapter. My only complaint was the spreadsheets on the disk are in an early form of Lotus 1-2-3, so those of us with Microsoft Excel have a hard time printing out these older documents cleanly (some of the formatting doesn't translate well).

Book Description
Sheldon S. Steinberg and David T. Austern focus on the ethical and unethical behavior of elected and appointed government officials. The authors discuss the various types of ethical dilemmas that confront public sector managers, offer ways to analyze them, and describe management strategies designed to prevent unethical behavior. A series of ethical dilemmas which force the reader to examine his or her own ethical standards is followed by answers to the dilemmas which emphasize the importance of ethical choices. The authors also suggest ways to identify the susceptibility to corruption of a jurisdiction and present model policies, procedures, and legislation which could be effective in reducing the opportunity for unethical behavior. Steinberg and Austern begin by looking at the ethical dilemmas commonly faced by public officials and exploring the motivations for unethical practices. They then examine the costs of unethical behavior and profile three types of government practitioners: the corrupter, the functionary, and the ethicist. The remaining chapters address the use of investigation and management control to encourage ethical practices in public sector management. The authors discuss methods to ensure financial integrity, monitor ethical practices, and comply with ethical rules; emphasize the importance of investigation by management outside of law enforcement activities; and demonstrate the management controls necessary to ensure the ethical practice of government. Essential reading for public sector managers at all levels of government, this book is also an ideal supplemental text for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in public administration.
