Book Description

Fourteen-year-old Eric is plagued by thoughts that germs on his hands could be making his family sick. Kelly, age 8, feels distressed if she can't count her pencils in multiples of four. No one wants to get rid of OCD more than they do--that's why Talking Back to OCD puts the power to beat obsessions and compulsions in their hands. This uniquely designed volume is really two books in one. The first portion of each chapter teaches children and adolescents skills they can use to take charge of the illness. Instructions that follow show their parents how to provide encouragement and support. Based on the most effective known treatment for OCD, the book demonstrates ways to "boss back" when OCD butts in, enabling many youngsters and teens to eliminate their symptoms entirely. Early-onset OCD is as common as diabetes; this powerful book will help thousands of young people show this unwelcome visitor to the door.

2 out of 5 stars Very Frustrating.......2007-10-19

This book was so frustrating. There were some good ideas here and there, but they were few and far between. As another reviewer mentioned, the program is convoluted and hard to follow. It was often difficult to understand exactly what the point of each step was and what the "homework" entailed. There were useful "summary sheets" for each chapter, but they were hidden in the back of the book. This kind of thing happened a lot--things seemed to be out of order. Several times, I had a question about something I read, and would only find the answer to it in a much later chapter. Other times, something would be mentioned seemingly in passing, only to have it turn out to be of great importance. It seemed to me that this program would be very hard to follow from beginning to end.

Another thing that bothered me was that, while the book is purportedly for kids and teens, most of the content seemed written for very young children. The most annoying thing was the way the authors constantly referred to obsessions as "brain hiccups" (It was not uncommon to find the word "hiccup" four times in one paragraph), but there was also a seemingly endless stream of "kid-friendly" analogies that felt patronizing. "Your 'brainpower techniques' should roll off your tongue as smoothly as your explanations for why your chores aren't done or what happened to that homework that was supposed to be turned in today," reads one irritating passage. Weirdly enough, the same chapter contained sample "task lists" that seemed copied from a program for adults; one sample task for a person with "moral scrupulosity" OCD was described as "looking at porn sites online without praying". I'll admit that, after four chapters of "hiccups" and lame sports metaphors, this was pretty jarring for me.

Finally, as a warning to people who are considering buying this, I should mention that there is an excessive number of testimonials and stories from other kids who have gone through the program. These are obviously intended to inspire camaraderie, but for kids who are triggered by reading about other people's rituals, they can be a disaster. Sure, there are some instances where a concept can't be explained without an example, but I really don't see the need for the book to contain detailed "example lists" of rituals, or a descriptive passage about how one girl had to wash her hands ("one finger at a time, starting with her right thumb"). My daughter became hysterically anxious reading about all these other people's symptoms and was very afraid for a while that she would develop some of them.

Overall, I would obviously not recommend this book. If the basic ideas (which are solid) could be put in a more readable format, it would have been much better. If you're reading this, you were probably hoping for a program that your child could do herself, but between the distracting examples and metaphors and the confusing layout (not to mention the odd reference to porn sites), this isn't it.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding book!.......2007-09-10

When we first realized our son was showing signs of OCD, we began to research any information that would somehow help us. We needed material that was practical and would give answers and guidance to enable us to get our son back.
We found this book and began working through the steps with our son. The explainations were clear. The quotes from other kids with OCD were encouraging. The layout was reader friendly. My son gave OCD a nickname as Dr. March suggests in his approach. He hated OCD as much as we all did for stealing so much of his time and causing such frustration. The blame was on "OCD" not my son as a person and this was a huge step forward.
I can hardly believe the progress we saw as we worked through this book. Slowly and steadily my son began to chip away at each obssesion/compulsion. He mapped them out and graphed the progress. It was a difficult task, but this book was like having Dr. March give my son and the whole family personal therapy at every turn.
We had looked at other material on OCD and even tried a therapist, but NOTHING compared to the information and tactics explained in this book. We have our son back! He's free again - free from the OCD! What more can I say?

5 out of 5 stars the best child-centered book for overcoming OCD.......2007-08-24

My 11-year old son has been in weekly therapy for treatment of OCD for over one year. One-on-one therapy has been very useful and cannot be overlooked. However, reading this book, TALKING BACK TO OCD, together with my son and having him follow it verbatim is what truly helped him BEAT OCD and know that he is in control! My son followed the instructions completely and has been nearly symptom free for over three months. Dr March's book gave my son the confidence to control his brain pathways and know how to "talk back" when OCD rears its ugly head again. I HIGHLY recommend this book over all others (and I have read them all!)

2 out of 5 stars Consider this before you buy............2007-07-10

I have watched a child endure OCD for 6 years, trying medication, nutrients and formal cognitive behaviorial therapy with various improvements and exacerbations. With no disrespect to the author, this book is does not give any "new look" to OCD as the Part I is titled.

The author indicates that the child can assume responsibility for the "homework" to enage in CBT. That won't happen from reading this book. The content to kids is buried. Even my 16 year old honor student found it convoluted, repetitive and not engaging. And, he has had formal CBT therapy and tried to use the book as a refresher.

The hype on this book makes it sound "child-centered". That's a lure. It is definitely an adult read. In fact each chapter has extensive sections called "Instructions for Parents."

If you are looking for a book geared to a child or young adult with OCD to help them help themselves, this is not the one.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-03-10

John March - as usual- has provided a comprehensive view and treatment manual for OCD. Might be too difficult to apply as a parent, but a wonderful resource for any professional!

Book Description

“Detachment” has been the standard message of most addiction literature for the last twenty years. The conventional wisdom offered to an addict’s loved ones has been to let the addict “hit bottom” before intervening. Now intervention specialist Debra Jay challenges this belief and offers a bold new approach to treating addiction that provides a practical and spiritual lifeline to families struggling with alcohol or drug abuse.

In No More Letting Go, Jay argues that the traditional advice of “letting go” too often destroys both the addict and the family physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Jay contends that addiction is everybody’s business–not just the addict’s–and addiction doesn’t have the right to trump the welfare of a family.

In short, highly accessible chapters written with warmth, understanding, and compassion, Jay weaves together philosophical and religious thought; new science on the brain function of an addict; the physical and psychological impact of addiction on family members; and poignant, real-life family stories.

No More Letting Go is a powerful, informative guide that provides comfort, hope, and practical advice to anyone affected by a family member’s addiction.

5 out of 5 stars Good information.......2007-10-11

This is a great book that tells it like it is about a terrible disease and the people affected by it. More help and information here that in any Al-anon literature I have ever read.

I only wish that I'd found this book years ago as I started the journey of addiction with a family member. This book was my turning point. Clear, concise. I finally GOT alcoholism. It sank in and I thank this author from the depths of my heart for putting wisdom to pen to paper.

Well the book was excellent. Ourwhole family is reading it. The only problem I had is that I paid extra for two day shipping on a Monday and the book was not received until Friday (late afternoon).

5 out of 5 stars Back in touch and lessons learned.......2007-06-12

Borrowed this book from the library and after reading two chapters had to buy it! Sat with my highlighter and immersed myself in this book. I really liked the short chapters and the way Debra Jay makes this information so personal. There is so much information for everyone who has ever had someone in their life with an addiction. The information about how we are also immersed in this disease is invaluable. If you've never come to terms with addiction being a disease, read this book. If you want your lives to change, there's lot of information in this easy to read book.

5 out of 5 stars NO MORE LETTING GO: THE SPIRITUALITY OF TAKING ACTION AGAINST ALCOHOLISM AND DRUG ADDICTION.......2007-06-08

This book is a must in the world that we live in today. It doesn't matter whether you are into alcohol or drugs being the reason for reading this book. Debra Jay talks about how we as family (even extended) can help each other in the terrifying reality of what happens to families who must live through the pain of addiction.

I love how in this series of books which explains synonyms, homonyms, adverbs, pronouns, prepositions and more, Cleary can take the complex and make it simple, funny and teachable. 4 out of 5 stars Are You Prepared to Prepare?.......2007-08-23

    INTRO
The PLANET LAW SCHOOL II, authored by Atticus Falcon, Esq., is a challenging book for me to review for two reasons: 1) I have not started law school yet and 2) I cannot determine whether or not the suggestions provided in the book will prove valuable.

    ABOUT ME (very brief!)
I have purchased and read nearly all of the preparation materials mentioned in the book. I also purchased and read other books for an edge such as "Getting to Maybe" to "The Young Lawyer's Jungle Book: A Survival Guide" to "Law School Confidential" to "Briding the Gap Between College and Law School" to "Acing Your First Year of Law School" to even taking a course in argumentation. I have consumed it all with a serious and focused diligence. I even purchased "The Resume Workbook" that the author mentions in PLANT LAW SCHOOL II (a total waste of money). [The above is *not* a suggested reading list.]

    PURPOSE FOR THIS REVIEW
My orientation for law school is tomorrow, and I am a bit restless for some reason and hope that writing this review will help induce drowsiness so I can obtain some sleep! I actually never intended to write a review for this book because it is 1) convoluted, 2) more than a law school preparation book (a full review might require me to address other parts of the book), and 3) I have not started law school and therefore 4) cannot determine how useful this book actually is.

ADVICE FOR THOSE CONSIDERING LAW SCHOOL (this *is* a warning!)
I seriously suggest taking a year (or two) off prior to entering law school. Whether you sit at the beach and do nothing; start a company you always wanted to; or provide humanitarian aide for the needy, you should give yourself some time to 1) prepare for law school and most importantly 2) determine if you *really* want to go to law school. Relax, take a break, work, or do whatever - but I suggest you give yourself some time to 1) prepare and 2) determine if you *really* want to do it.

    AUTHOR'S "MUST GET" MATERIALS

    CALI
The only "must get" I did not purchase was the "CALI 'Library of Lessons.'" Apparently, my law school provides it for free and after purchasing everything else (see the paragraph on ABOUT ME, supra), I did not want to make this additional purchase. The author "urges" readers to obtain it. I hope it does not significantly hurt me.

    ABA BOOKS (UCC)
I purchased (and read) both "The ABCs of the UCC" Article 1 and Article 2. I found them to be the least useful of the "must get" materials, but I am nonetheless happy I purchased them. [I just deleted a lot of text and realized that I was reviewing these books.] To be brief, I do not consider them a "must get."

    ASPEN BOOKS
I have read Blum on "Contracts," Glannon on "The Law of Torts," and Glannon on "Civil Procedure." [NOTE: My professor for my K course recommends the use of Blum.] I read them, cover to cover and line by line. I think I might have burnt myself out a little bit. Let me be clear and direct: I do not agree with the author's schedule [I will provide a suggested schedule, infra]. I should have read these *after* (not before) completing LEEWS and Delaney. I am very happy I read them prior to entering law school, and I have heard from other students they are excellent study guides as well. Listen carefully: do not make my mistake. One, follow my schedule, infra. Two, outline. Begin to outline immediately when reading these materials.

    LEEWS
I have listened to the LEEWS CDs three times and finished the manual. However, I have not practiced as extensively as I would have liked to. The author loves LEEWS. I consider LEEWS, in conjuction with Delaney's "How to Do Your Best on Law Exams," the most important preparation materials for law school. I was previously reading entire exams and trying to answer entire exams! The human mind cannot possibly make sense of all the facts and circumstances in a hypothetical law school exam. LEEWS trains you how to think of an exam in parts.

    DELANEY BOOKS
I read "Learning Legal Reasoning" some time ago. I cannot consider it a "must get" but rather a strongly recommended. [I am flipping through the book right now.] I cannot consider it a "must get" but I theorize that some one without any prior knowledge of briefing would find it useful.

However, "How to Do Your Best on Law School Exams" by Delaney is an indispensable guide on succeeding on law school exams. I am not going to provide an adequate review of it here; I intend to (possibly tonight)review it some time in the future.

    MY (SUGGESTED) OUTLINE
After reading nearly all of the "must get" materials (in addition to materials referenced in the book) I would like to provide the reader a suggested outline that I think improves on the author's. The "must get" materials in the book should be limited to and read in this order:

    1) Delaney's "How to Do Your Best on Law Exams"

    2) LEEWS

    3) Aspen E&E books
    a) be sure to apply what you learned in 1) and 2) to the examples in the E&E books.

    SUMMARY & CONCLUSION
As I said in previous paragraphs, supra, I purchased most of the "must get" materials and other resources including but not limited to "O'Connor's Federal Rules." I do not necessarily believe that reading all of the "must get" materials in the book is critical. However, adequate preparation is. After writing this review, I am considering creating my first "Listmania" on law school preparation materials. Nevertheless, if you are seriously considering law school, the best preparation is giving yourself one or two years to relax, travel, work, and/or pursue your hobbies after finishing your undergraduate (or graduate program) prior to enrolling in law school. I cannot overly emphasis the importance of making a serious determination for yourself whether or not you want to enter law school.

I hope the above was useful for you.

2 out of 5 stars Can do more harm than good.......2007-07-27

Well, I just finished my first year of law school. Fortunately, I passed. But I passed despite the advice of this author who doesn't use his real name and keeps his identity hidden.

I do concede that there is a time and a place for a more skeptical or cynical evaluation of law school. If that type of evaluation should happen on a scale of 1 to 10, I'd say you should do about 4 to 7 of it. This author does about 100 worth of that kind of evaluation, which turns into drivel because it loses its usefulness and turns you anti-lawschool before you even get there. Not good if you've actually decided to go to law school. Don't be fooled by the "I'm giving you the real deal" ploy. He gives you that and his excess baggage of contempt for life itself.

Yes there will be some professors who aren't as interested in your education as they are for their own success. Yes, it sometimes is better if you can create your own curriculum instead of going along with what the professors are teaching. But guess what? That didn't work.

My advice? Skip this book, read Law School Confidential, but take even that book with a grain of salt because whatever he's telling you is common knowledge among most people going to law school now. There's nothing Confidential about Law School Confidential.

Besides that, the biggest advice I can offer is that you should go along with the professors' curriculum as much as possible, but play it by ear. Some professors make it very difficult for you if you don't play by their rules. Some are more lenient. You'll likely get a mix. I tried to do my own thing because it made more sense to do that, but that failed because my professor decided that he didn't like the way I was trying to teach myself law. Believe me, the professors have reputations to keep, and they'll go pretty far to maintain them. I credit the author of this book for breeding that kind of anti-professor paranoia. Listening to anything he had to say was the reason I almost failed law school the first semester.

Third advice? Work hard. This is the only SECRET to law school. The material's easy. The self-discipline's hard.

Again, I'll concede he makes some interesting points. Even a monkey is bound to say something interesting if given 800 pages to play around with. But I'll just end by saying that the "advice" in the book is more of a minefield than nuggets of gold or pearls of wisdom. About his advice not to get the assigned casebook? Try your first year without a casebook. Just try it and see what happens, but only for fun, not if you're serious about law school.

5 out of 5 stars A great resource, an inspiring book.......2007-07-18

I disagree with some of the recent reviews here:

    * I don't find this book negative at all! Yes, the book tells you about many of the traps and challenges one faces in law school. BUT, the message is positive - that you CAN do well, by simply being aware and understanding what's going on. You don't need to be some kind of natural-born law genius.

    * Furthermore, I found the book to be one of the FEW that tries to provoke the reader a bit with the challenges of legal thinking, and then asking, "Are you having fun yet? If so, then a life as a lawyer may be perfect for you." In my case, I was able to give an unequivocal, "Yes!". It was a very validating experience.

It's an excellent book. I don't give it 5 stars because I found it somewhat disorganized. It's a decent book to read, with lots of good content, although it does meander a bit from topic to topic.

3 out of 5 stars Just get E&E and do tons of hypos.......2007-07-01

I just finished my first year in top 10 percent and after reading this book, I can say that you'll be broke and surrounded by a lot of useless reading material plus scared out of your mind if you read this. The chapter outlining a study plan is useful, but read it quickly at a library. E&E's are definitely helpful (particularly Torts, Contracts and Constitutional Law) and I recommend some hornbooks, in particular Friedenthal's Civil Procedure and Farnsworth's Contracts, which are by far the best. Model Penal Code by Markus Drubber and some of the E&E is all I read for crim and I aced the exam.

Skip the Delaney garbage. They're antiquated and you'll learn how to brief in legal writing. Also, the Restatements are overkill (except in contracts where the comments are very useful). LEEWs is also just wasted added work. IRAC works just fine (though I am a journalist by trade so I probably didn't need the writing help). Crunchtime and most commercial outlines are also a waste. My civ pro professor admonished some students who copied wrong information out of them on the final (I'm sure they were graded down for that).

My advice, enjoy your last free summer before law school and just budget your time well once you're there. Join a productive study group and focus on hypos and old exams well ahead of time (probably the only good piece of advice in this book). Siegel's makes books of hypos or just look up exams on the internet. A lot of schools post them. Seeing what different professors ask on their exams really helps you cover every possible scenario (and look really intelligent asking questions in class). And yes, make sure you know all the black letter law, not just the policy bs your professor stresses in class. Otherwise exams will bite you in the *ss. And one crazy bit of advice Falcon gave that I followed and helped me immensely: don't buy the textbook. I'm not an advocate of just not reading the cases like PLS is, but when I didn't own the book, I had to make sure I went to the library or the bookstore to read the case and take really good notes of everything (not just cases) BEFORE THE PLACE CLOSED. So I stayed on top of my work and the note-taking really helped my mastery of the concepts. Also made outlining a breeze. I aced every class I didn't buy the book for. So if you're crazy like me, give it a try for a week and maybe you'll save some money.

It's really not so bad folks. I worked, went out plenty and still did very well. Just know thyself. If you're a genius, maybe cramming will work for you, but if not, stay on top of your work.

    5 out of 5 stars Essential Reading.......2007-06-26

If you're going to Law School, buy this book now. Ideally you want to buy this book a year before you go to Law School. I bought it 8 months before I went, and was able to finish the book and all the recommended readings, but I wish I had purchased the book earlier.

Once again, if you are going to law school, and you are lucky enough to be prospecting this book to buy among all the other books out there, BUY THIS BOOK FIRST. Law School is hard. This book will give you the needed edge if you're smart, or it will be your lifesaver if you're not that smart. Either way you need it.

What a fabulous read! Designed for everyone but ultimately for all sales people, "Go for No" is simply written and easily understood.

Richard Fenton uses a story line which holds the reader on course developing the strategy necessary to become a top performer. This book is guaranteed to assist the reader to improve their sales potential instantly. Quotas are great, however, the author's philosophy allows you to meet them and accelerate to points way beyond.

Each story line that Fenton writes allows the reader to relate to their own experiences showing the need for improvement. Fenton's humor keeps light of failure and the illustrated message grips you to develop the strategy for success.

Many times throughout the book I could see myself doing that exact same thing and at the same time not realizing I was destined to fail. Fenton shows that a slight change in thinking can do wonders for your potential.

I highly recommend "Go for No." It will change your complete strategy towards reaching your sales goals and allow you to become a better person at the same time.

4 out of 5 stars classic in adolescent studies.......2004-11-23

In All Grown Up and No Place to Go, David Elkind methodically maps out teenagehood for his readers in three parts. In the first section he details bodily and emotional changes that take place within the young person, illustrating his observations with popular young adult literature, interviews and personal experiences. In the second section he turns to the growing obstacles that face youth in these changing times. Finally, in the third and final section Elkind cleverly identifies the physical, social, emotional and familial results stress causes in the lives of young people growing up in America. Through categorizing and characterizing the differing types of stress the young person faces, Elkind addresses the differing reactions that result from differing typologies of personalities of young people and finally ends with a chapter suggesting possible suggestions to deal with the different kinds of stresses.
Through reading Elkind's summarization of the teen years the reader recalls the awkward years that he/she survived on the way to adulthood. From the physical to the emotional to the spiritual issues that mushroom in the lives of the adolescent, the reader is reminded and therefore able to empathize with the struggles teens face from within themselves as well as from outside influences. With this deeper level of understanding of the teenage world, Elkind's concept of the patchwork self does much to enlighten the readers as to behaviors they may identify in their own past as well as in the youth that populate the halls of high schools, youth centers and churches alike.

Elkind's book discusses many of the issues that face adolescents each day. Even though the book was written in 1984, the topics Elkind discusses are still a concern for many children, parents and teachers. Now, fifteen years later, there are even more things that we all need to worry about. Some of the issues that Elkind covers are: substance abuse, sexual activity, suicide, crime, value systems, puberty, family structure, media, pregnancy, school systems, stress and peer pressure. He gives many examples for each concern. Some are fictional. Others are actual life experiences that have come out during interviews. Elkind writes about both Erik Erikson and Jean Piaget when he discusses what needs to be accomplished mentally in the teenage years. He briefly mentions different phases of life in terms that are easily understood. In fact, the entire book is easy to comprehend. Elkind really keeps the interest of the reader. His use of personal life experiences is truly captivating. Unfortunately, some of the stories are sad to read about. Growing up in the 80's myself, I was never aware of how common some of these issues were. This book makes me realize that the incidences that occur today occurred back then as well.

    Book Description

Hikaru Shindo is like any sixth-grader in Japan: a pretty normal school boy with a two-tone head of hair and a penchant for antics. One day, he finds an old bloodstained Go board in his grandfather's attic-and that's when things get really interesting. Trapped inside the Go board is Fujiwara-no-Sai, the ghost of an ancient Go master who taught the strategically complex board game to the Emperor of Japan many centuries ago. In one fateful moment, Sai becomes a part of Hikaru's consciousness and together, through thick and thin, they make an unstoppable Go-playing team. Will they be able to defeat Go players who have dedicated their lives to the game? Will Sai achieve the "Divine Move" so he'll finally be able to rest in peace? Begin your journey with Hikaru and Sai in this first volume of Hikaru no Go.

    5 out of 5 stars A title that shouldn't be missed.......2007-08-20

When my friend told me about this manga 4 years ago my first reaction was "A manga about Igo (or Wei-Chi in Chinese)? Who'd want to read that?!" I resisted for about a year until I finally gave in to his naggings and picked up the first volume...and was completely hooked by the end of it. I immediately went and get a set for myseif, and to this day it has remained on the top of my favoriates (no small feat for someone who has hundreds of mangas and changes favoriates constantly). The story, the artworks, the characters... everything just grabs you and pulls you in and never letting go, and you don't want to be let go. I'm glad that they are bringing this manga to the US, and I'm going to collect the English version as well so I can introduce this wonderful work to my friends who can't read Japanese or Chinese. Do yourself a favor and pick it up, you won't be disappointed. This truly is a title that any manga or anime fans shouldn't do without.

5 out of 5 stars The kids love it........2007-05-14

I am amazed at how powerful an effect these books have had on my children. I mean that now that they have been reading these books they have developed an interest in playing go. They knew I played and have seen my go board but they never asked me to teach them until after they started reading these books. Within two weeks of the purchase of this book my 14 and 10 year old sons were playing go and I had never given any lessons to my 10 year old. They are continually asking me to get more of the series. It is great. I am very happy.

4 out of 5 stars GO PLAYER GHOST .......2007-02-04

Hikaru Shindo needs money fast and he's getting pretty desperate, even looking through his granfather's attic with his best friend, Akari, for any old junk he can sell. He's short of money because his allowance has been taken away by his parents for his bad grades in school. They manage to find an old Go board with what appears to be a bloodstain on it. Soon after that Hikaru begins to hear a disembodied voice only audible to him and then the voice is joined by a ghostly apparition of an 1000 year old Go player named Fujiwara-no-Sai from the Heian Period. He used to be the instructor to the Emperor, but a rival's plots threw him into disgrace and he eventually committed suicide. But his soul yearned to play more Go, and he has been able to appear to certain people through the ages to help him on his quest to play the "Divine Move". Now he hopes to enlist Hikaru in the drive to that goal.

I've found over the years that I can read manga or watch anime that get me interested in subjects I would never have sought on my own. The game of Go was something I had heard of but had no idea how to play before watching and reading Hikaru No Go. Even though I didn't understand every move being played by the characters I did get the GIST of what was going on, and felt suspense or excitement in what is essentially a mental game instead of a physical one. That is the true triumph of the writer and the artist. Making something that shouldn't be inherently interesting to non-players exciting and entertaining. Yumi Hotta's passion for the game really shows. Sometimes you can get swept up into another's passion through sheer force of will. The characters introduced in Volume 1 are likeable even though Sai is a little too girly for me. There's even a rival for Hikaru to go up against that is his own age, Akira Toya, the son of the best Go player in Japan, and a great talent in his own right. Great book. The anime series is good too.

    5 out of 5 stars A great stratigic manga!.......2005-09-15

Yeah! I've seen the whole anime series (in chinese) already, and believe me it's really good! The end is sort of a "you choose" type of ending, so... you get my point.

Hikaru no go is a great manga promoting the ancient chinese/japanese game go. The object of the game is use black and white pieces and occupy most of the board. You can "eat" sections of your opponent's part by totally surrounding a portion of his pieces. Hikaru no go is about a young boy (6th grade) named Hikaru who just happens to find a go board in his father's attic! It seems that only he can see the blood stains on the board and suddenly a human/ghost come out of the board and has been longing to play go for the past hundred years. Sai (the ghost that looks totally like a person) couldn't die and go to heaven until he mastered the "divine move".

At first Hikaru, like any sane person, denys Sai what he wants (to just play go) Then, also like any sane person, consents when Sai's unquenchable sadness causes Hikaru to get sick. In Japan some people devote their whole lives just playing to and become go instructors. The game originally came from China, but it became more popular in Japan. Back to the story, Hikaru goes into a go club and finds that the whole place is full of adults. The suddenly he spots a boy his age and asks to play with him. Turns out, however, that the boy his age named Akira is the son of the best go player in Japan! Sai directs Hikaru in where to put the pieces and he wins without any effort. Akira is naturally shocked seeing that the way Hikaru holds the go pieces is like a beginner, but his moves are from hundreds of years ago! Akira has basically never been beat before, being a go prodigy, so now he has a new goal: to beat Hikaru.

The story progresses and tells about how hikaru gets taught by Sai in how to play the game, and expert moves. Hikaru learns very quickly and goes from a school team, to the city tournament, to applying to become a go instructor for life! It also tells of his struggles to beat Akira and how all the upper go players are keeping an eye on him. It's interesting when Hikaru and Sai go play on-line go with other real players from around the world. You get to see Sai kicking other countries' best player's butts!

Oh yeah, did I mention that only 3 people get become go instructors each year? Akira already got a spot the year before. Do you think Hikaru is up to the challenge? If he does get in, will he be able to compete with people on/above his level?

If you like this manga, I strongly recommend "Whistle!" as well

As a police officer I spend a lot of time at the donut shop or just sitting in my car sleeping. I was gaining a fair amount of weight at an increasing rate and developing a relationship with one of the donut girls. My wife Trish gave this to me as an anniversary gift. I can honestly say it has saved our marriage and my waistline. Once I get my speeding ticket quota filled I spend hours sitting in my squad car playing the games in this fine book. Sometimes I get so engrossed in the games I forget to eat lunch. Some of the games are rather challenging but overall it's a great book. Enjoy!

"My wink is binding," Bernie Brillstein writes in the middle part of his memoir of a career in showbiz. At this point the movie-star manager has already admitted that he wanted power and prestige as soon as he started in the William Morris agency mailroom. And that he chased after a Don Corleone-ish kind of respect afterward. But even when he became a clout-carrying manager and near-mogul he kept his people-first credo. You suspect he loves it too for the way it echoes the Borscht Belt, since that's the kind of verbal energy he draws on throughout this anecdote-crammed autobiography. He calls himself "show," but in four decades he had to be "business" too, tough enough to tell clients, as he says he did, when to start their career over from scratch. The book begins with a graphically honest memory of his visit to the proctologist with his family when he was 24--something he guffaws off, but it's probably not far from the sort of reality check he regularly gave clients like Jim Henson, Norm Crosby, Lorne Michaels, John Belushi, and Brad Pitt. He cops to a gambling addiction, a love of "high class call girls," and to the way he stole from Laugh-Into invent Hee Haw. But he also brokered Lorne Michael's big break with SNL, produced Dangerous Liaisons, and eventually got News Radio and The Sopranos on the air. He candidly assesses professional pains too, including Michael Ovitz's pathology, Garry Shandling's riddling neuroses, and the loss of Belushi and Henson. "I care," he writes finally, "because that's who I am." It's easy to smile at that, but by the end of the book it's also easy to believe he means it. --Lyall Bush

    Book Description

Bernie Brillsteins forty-five-year career has allowed him to work with and nurture many world-class talents, including John Belushi, Jim Henson, Dan Aykroyd, and Martin Short. Brillstein speaks out for the first time about the lives and deaths of his clients. 3 out of 5 stars REALLY JUST A SALESMAN, AFTER ALL THE FUSS!!.......2001-03-28

Because we're so star-struck in America, we tend to be overly impressed with ShowBiz and the people who inhabit that world. But as charming, determined and persistent a personality Mr. Brillstein may be, he's essentially just a salesman - NOT the creator, but a "dealmaker" of the ShowBiz Old School - and after almost 400 pages, I found he'd worn thin his welcome! However dramatic it may have been FOR HIM to accompany John Belushi's body back East, or "duke it out" with the Big Boys in corporate takeovers while at Lorimar, the emotions are thinly drawn and shallow in this book. Brillstein made me less than intrigued with his machinations, unimpressed by his self-aggrandizing spin on events and ultimately unsympathetic to his life challenges. (His obvious misogyny doesn't help, either - he has no use for women outside of the sack, it appears.) Here's another absurdly fortunate, rich powerful older man feeling sorry for himself because time changes everything? I'd have hoped he'd have learned to adjust better to the slings and arrows of life by the time he got to his 60s and 70s!

This book was distressing to me because I REALLY WANTED to LIKE the guy - but I found I couldn't. He's kinda ordinary, and once you remove the "famous" names and large amounts of money, his anecdotes are kinda ordinary! He's not terribly brilliant, sage or extraordinary in any other way than being sublimely LUCKY! I gave the book 3 stars, because it's certainly not dreck, but for inspiration or insight, I'd advise looking elsewhere!

5 out of 5 stars Brillstein is as a big a star as those he represents.......2001-03-07

I'm not sure what drove me to buy the Brillstein book. I had heard of him of years, but wasn't sure that a managers tale was all that interesting. Oh, but is! This book is filled with humor, honesty, and and ego. Bernie seems like a terrific guy and he tells fantastic stories. Some are filled with love: Belushi, Radner, etc. Others venom (and these are the most fun, he pulls no punches): Ovitz, Shandling (more would have better on this), etc. You learn about the inside story of Hee Haw, The Muppets, SNL, and Lorimar. My favorite stuff was about Jim Henson, rarely have I seen so much great stuff written about one of my heroes.

While this may not be a roast, I raise my glass to Big Bernie and the wonderful life he has led. Thanks for sharing.

    5 out of 5 stars Unexpectedly Touching.......2000-12-04

I found myself unexpectedly touched by this autobiography. Having read it, I consider Bernie Brillstein a friend. With no self-praise, Brillstein shows himself to be a man of decency, of compassion, of empathy. He began in his profession as an agent at William Morris, dreaming of representing mid-Century comics such as Jackie Gleason and Jackie Gale. When he left William Morris, he became a personal manager, starting the careers of dozens of entertainers who have become household names. The stories Bernie has to tell! He survived--there's no other word--until the end of the century, representing Jim Henson, Lorne Michaels, Gilda Radner, John Belushi, Dan Ackroyd and, as the saying goes, a cast of thousands along the way. He created HEE HAW and greenlighted THE SOPRANOS, headed a movie studio for a short time, got fired, picked himself up and started again. His very life has been the personification of the entertainment business; there are few who exceeded his success. And he is the one having the last laugh: He's still here! But along with the chronological report of his professional experience, what he was thinking, how he pulled it off, there is this man, this basically sweet and decent man, and that's what shines through his book. I enjoyed reading about Bernie's fascinating life.

2 out of 5 stars Passably interesting but..........2000-10-29

A passably interesting look into life of an "old school" agent/manager with some real insights into his client's lives and the behind-the-scenes machinations of Hollywood. WARNING: You'll have to wade through a considerable amount of self-aggrandizment that I found tremendously off-putting toward the end. It's a rare occasion when I don't finish a book but I found myself skipping through the last third and ultimately bailed out with just a few chapters to go.

3 out of 5 stars Readable, but not essential reading........2000-09-07

There's really no good insider showbiz tips or amazing gossip here. I found the book to be readable -- meaning I kept on reading once I picked it up but at any time I could have stopped and not felt like I was going to be missing a golden nugget.

It's a show biz biography of a manager. Did we really expect it to be an essential read?
