Aiming for developer-level OCP status? The Oracle Certified Professional Application Developer Exam Guide is the one book you need.
At the pinnacle of the client/server database world resides Oracle--an extremely powerful, albeit complex, database management system. If you're working with Oracle and haven't reached your own certification pinnacle, this guide will help start you on your journey. Proficiency in Oracle goes a long way in today's high-tech job market, and certification is a key way of assuring your talent.
To master the Oracle Certified Application Developer status, you must pass five tests that focus on Oracle's flavor of SQL, form design, and report creation--crucial elements of Oracle application development. You'll find in this massive Oracle authorized exam book all of the tests that make up the Developer certification track--Introduction to Oracle: SQL and PL/SQL, Develop PL/SQL Program Units, Developer Forms I, Developer Forms II, and Oracle Developer Reports. Each examination is covered as a separate unit, so you can work your way through the text as you progress through the testing process.
To keep you sharp and provide periodic reality checks, there are two-minute drills, self-tests, and practice exam questions. Plus, the CD-ROM includes the Oracle Assessment Test--an interactive 300-question test program that closely resembles the one you'll use to take the official tests. --Stephen Plain

Customer Reviews:
A very bad book.......2003-07-05
This book doesn't cost its money.
This book worked for me.......2002-12-02
I used this book, and one other, to take and pass the Oracle Certified Professional exam (OCP). The other book I used was Oracle Press' PL/SQL Program Units Exam Guide, which focuses just on the second exam. This book covers all of the exams, but the second exam is especially difficult, and a friend recommended that one for that exam specifically.
This book was great. It is divided into sections, one for each exam. My approach was to schedule the exam one week in advance(you can contact Sylvan to do it), then review the section for that exam, then take the exam, then repeat for the next exam. I've been in the Oracle business for 7 years, so I knew most of the material already, but there were several things I didn't know, and more importantly, I wanted to know what the exam would require, which wasn't everything I would've expected, but included some things I didn't.
The bottom line: I passed with plenty of room to spare. Great book, highly recommended - along with the Program Units book as well.
Too basic.......2002-11-22
Good book for a beginner (this is an excellent intro to SQL and PL/SQL), but not enough depth for the exams. It covers all the necessary areas, but barely skims the surface on numerous important topics. I recommend the Sybex book (even though it's a little dry). For each test, I'd start with this book and then move on to another text; that should be all you need to pass the exams. Be sure to PRACTICE; that's by far the most important element of success.
Preparing for OCP Developer Certification.......2002-11-13
I purchased several recommended Oracle Press books in order to prepare for the OCP Application developer exam. I just finished taking the first exam 1Z0-001 and passed, but what a shocker! The preparation I received after a very thorough review from this book was no where near the preparation required, not even close.
I just finished reading all chapters from this book for exam II - PL/SQL Program Units, and will hold off scheduling the exam itself until better sources can be identified.
I would NOT recommend this book in preparation, at least not without considering other preparation resources/materials.
EXCELLENT BOOK FOR FORMS.......2002-05-30
It's obvious that one author wrote the SQL sections of this book, and the other author wrote the Forms sections. The SQL sections are from Mr. Couchman's Oracle DBA Exam Guide, and he hardly rewrote them at all - that's too bad, because the DBA Exam Guide is getting terrible reviews.
On the other hand, the Forms sections in this book are written in a different, much clearer style. The Forms sections make this book worth buying. If you are using Developer 6i, you should get the newer "OCP Building Internet Applications I & II Exam Guide" - that contains the same Forms sections, but updated for Developer 6i. ...
Customer Reviews:
Informative and comprehensive.......2007-07-23
Ah, I wish I'd found this book two years ago. Back then, when I just started working as an EE, the benefit I could gain from the book would be huge. Today, knowing at least 90% of what is has to say, I'm still very much impressed.
Mark Balch takes a unifying approach I haven't seen in other books. Deciding to focus on the complete spectrum of digital/electronic design is a great decision, since most of the books out there either pay attention only to logic and assembly or only to leakage currents in diodes and bode plots of filters. Often, an EE has to work closely with both worlds, which is what the author of this book understood and filled 460 pages with valuable information.
On one hand this book teaches digital logic (with nice practical aspects, for example the 7400 family), computer architecture, memory, communications (with a great section explaining all the nuts-and-bolts of the omnipresent RS232/422/485 family of
standards), networking, state machines, FPGAs and CPLDs.
On the other hand, it doesn't neglect the low level stuff. A good overview of basic electronics is given, including information on diodes, transistors, op-amps and ADC/DACs. It doesn't stop there and discusses the practical aspects of design I haven't seen described in other (non-textbook) books - clock distribution, power regulation/distribution, signal integrity and various debugging techniques.
What I liked especially is that the author doesn't get into the topics too deep - there's textbooks and data-sheets for that. He gives theory when needed, focuses on the practicals and refers to other sources of information. In particular, the section that explains how to read data-sheets and what to pay attention to while reading is a gold-mine for young engineers.
I think this book can be very useful for fresh engineers - to get quickly informed of the wide spectrum of design practices or even for students of EE - to see the bigger picture. To seasoned professionals it won't provide much new knowledge.
Book Description
In this book, best selling author, Paul Sanghera, offers cohesive, concise, yet comprehensive coverage of all the topics included in the PgMP exam. With a laser sharp focus on the exam objectives, the Study Guide goes beyond just being an "exam cram." The material is presented in a logical learning sequence: a section builds upon previous sections and a chapter on previous chapters. All concepts, simple and complex, are defined and explained when they appear the first time. There is no hopping from topic to topic and no technical jargon without explanation. Because no prior knowledge of program management is assumed, this book will be useful for both: those new to program management, as well as individuals with years of experience. Although the primary purpose of the book is to help you pass the PgMP exam, it will also serve as a great reference for the program managers before and after the exam.
Special Features:
-
Hundreds of review questions with fully explained answers
-
A complete practice exam with fully explained answers
-
The real world scenarios to help you deal with the program management issues in the real world and also to answer the scenario based questions in the exam
-
Notes and tips to highlight the crucial points
-
Exam’s Eye View section at the end of each chapter to emphasize the important points from the exam’s perspective
-
Key Terms section at the end of each chapter that lists the important terms and concepts introduced in the chapter along with their definitions
-
The exam objectives fully explained before their coverage in each chapter

A Practical Process.......2007-10-15
This is an excellent description of a tried and true process that has been verified through use with many clients. Managing desktop hardware and software assets is a must if a client is going to control cost and ensure that there are no unexpected and costly "true-ups" with Microsoft and other vendors. This book explains how to do it!

Wont help you pass the A+ core exam.......1999-08-19
i just recently took the A+ exam and passed with no thanks to this book --its not detailed to fit the exam, i wouldnt recommend this as a study guide. i studied from the examnotes.com which was really helpfull i just purchase A+ for dummies to study for the dos/win half. Its seems helpful so far
Some errors that should not have happened.......1998-09-18
In the 1st chapter of this book we are told that single-sided disks are the 320/360K disks and the double sided are the 1.2 meg disks. This is incorrect. The single-sided disks, of ancient history, are the 160/180K disks, the double-sided are 320/360K and the double-density disks introduced the 1.2 meg disks. Also, on the Interactive Study portion of the CD-ROM it is not possible to choose an incorrect answer and go to the text. The only active links are to the correct answers which makes this feature quite useless for the user wanting to truly test him/her self.

Book Description
Current thinking about how to improve strategic planning (now upgraded to strategic thinking) and decision making by managers at all levels is to employ some aspect of information systems technology. Although this approach has worked well for most organizations, chief executives are now asking their managers to do what they do best but to do it better. But how? Future thinking about improving strategic thinking and decision making involves integrating creativity with the latest in information systems. Hence, the power of the computer can be an important means to assist managers in doing what they do better when employing a creative computer software approach. Initially, the text looks at a number of areas that are impacted by creativity, with special emphasis on creative computer software. Management decision making is examined from a problem-finding or a forward-looking viewpoint that can benefit from utilizing creative computer software. Not only is this software useful for organizing ideas, but also for getting managers involved in networking ideas in different locations of a company. But more importantly, this software centers on the generation of new ideas. To demonstrate the generation of these ideas, the final part of the text gives a number of real-world applications of creative computer software. Particular emphasis is placed on Idea Fisher 4.0, an effective software package for generating new products and services.

Customer Reviews:
I agree.......2005-09-02
I also found this book helpfu. To be honest I was able to pass the test using the information inside. I also occasionally take it along on a job incase I need some of the info. I did find it a more geared towards 4 stars to be fair. 5 stars normally does not go to a tech manual anyway but I didn't this it got the review I read that slammed a well put together book so I hope this redeems it.
Well it helped me.......2005-08-09
I have read the other review and I just have to say this book helped me. I am going for my test soon and some of the questions I had were answered in a clear and concise format. Also, I really felt the writing made it a much easier read than other manuals that I have purchased. It is nice to know not all technical books need to read like stereo instructions or are oversimplified as in the dummy or idiots books. I went ahead and also called the company for the discounted practice exam and not only does the practice exam seem to have the type of question that the test has but they linked to the book in order to show me additional information on the particular topic. I would recommend this book.
Don't waste your Time. .......2005-01-27
At first glance it seemed like a decent book. But after reading just a few pages you can tell that the book needed a technical editor to correct the inconsistancies. In the first chapter they say that the only operating sytems that can't be upgraded to XP is Windows 3.1 and any server version. The next page says that Win 95 and Win NT 3.51 can not be upgraded to XP. There is no mention of Win2k at all for the upgrades. A few pages further on they talk about the installation screens and talk about installing Windows 2000. The website doesn't have an errata link listing corrections so it leaves me being very unsure of which is correct. After only reading about 20 pages of the book I am dreading reading further and getting more confused and even more afraid of incorect information. I bought this book to pass the 20-270 certification test and don't think that this book is even worth reading because you can't trust anything in it. It is even a second edition so I find it absurd that there is any major mistakes in it.
I had to give it one star but I would have rated it 0 stars if I could have.
Don't waste your time and money on this piece of trash.
