5 out of 5 stars Technology specialist you shall be ...........2007-10-17

SQL Server 2005 Technology Specialist ...As the Certificate suggest after clearing Exam 70-431,you shall be one. This book is excellant guide and has excellant structure. You need to have basic knowledge about databases and its position in the project to be able to absorb all information. I completed by certification in January this year and than I got job in Feburary.I read this book three time before i appeared for exam just because to be able to pass exam you need to some minute details. It all helps at End... I nailed the interview when the interver tried getting technical and when he asked how many indexes one can create on a table I answered by telling exactly how many Non Clus and Clust index can be created and what is the size of index page :). I am working as DBA now. For all those new comers ...I suggest clear this exam and start hunting job as there are good chance you'll get one.

5 out of 5 stars Good mix of general and detail info.......2007-01-05

It's a good quality book with a good ratio of high level and very detail info. Not too many typos, almost none in the examples of SQL statements. I'd recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book. Good exam preperation.......2006-12-29

Very good book. Detailed chapters. Things to remember are highlighted. End of chapter questions were highlighted. For those who are experienced with SQL 2000, you will find most of this book redundant, as most of the stuff comes from SQL 2000. But it does a good job explaining new technologies i.e. Service Broker, Contract/Queue, Partitioning etc.

For those who want to sit for the 70-431 exam, i suggest getting brain dump for this exam (free) or buy a testking cram. I passed on 12/19 with 947. Yeehaa!

5 out of 5 stars Pretty good kit.......2006-12-15

Since I've been working more and more with sql, I'm hoping to take Exam 70-431 early next year. This was recommended to me and it's a pretty good kit.

4 out of 5 stars Good Book -- great value.......2006-12-07

I just passed 70-431. I'm a DBA w/ experience on SQL 2005 and SQL 2000. This book and the accompanying CD were the only tools I used to study. I read the book cover to cover, although I skipped the actual practices. (I would only recommend skipping the practices if you have a lot of real world experience with the product.) Then I moved on to the practice tests on CD, and had pretty mediocre passing scores on three practice tests in certification mode (45 questions, answers scored at end). Finally, I used the practice test in study mode, where you could review your answers as you went to drill down into areas that I needed more work on. Having the accompanying practice test (295 questions) makes this kit a great value. I felt as though I learned a lot during all of this and wasn't just "studying for the test". One word on the test format itself -- there were plenty of simulations to do -- everything was not multiple choice.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Amazing book.......2007-07-13

I have the first version of this book. Now I am so glad to have the second version too. It has great improvement. It added quite lot of recent FEC tech in, including Turbo coding, LDPC coding. Besides, it is quite easy for a engineer to understand, not awkward as some math equation filled textbooks. Its block diagram can be easily understood by an engineer like me. Amazing book!

5 out of 5 stars Both clear and complete.......2007-05-15

Not only does this book contain almost all the important information about coding you could hope for, but it's written in such a clear way with such a consistent notation that it's also wonderful for learning. This book is more than twice as long as the first edition and serves as a great graduate-level text or reference for someone designing ECC systems.

5 out of 5 stars Foremost book in the field.......2004-10-19

I had the previous version of this book as my text at USC. This version is a huge improvement over the last one. This one covers all the new advances and adds emphasis on the use of coding to communications channels. A complaint I had of the last version was that it under-emphasized coding gains and Eb/N0 vs. BER performance figures. This book has overcome many of those difficulties. It is still a bit ponderous in places but then it is the only book that covers the material in this much detail, truly a Bible of the field. It is a great graduate level text and a must-have book for any comm engineer. Charan Langton complextoreal.com

5 out of 5 stars very useful for both beginners and experts.......1999-06-12

a very detailed book for getting into Galois field arithmetics, cyclic codes, convolutional codes, ... As a very beginner I had no big problems understanding the content. I am not the type of guy who could understand just by reading the theory - this book gives a lot of very useful examples, so you could call it fun reading it!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent applications-based approach to Error Correction.......1998-10-05

Lin and Costello produced an excellent text which is targeted towards engineers as opposed to mathematicians. The mathematics behind error correction can be extremely intensive and, with other texts, I quickly become lost in complex proofs. Lin and Costello present error correction in method, with plenty of good examples, which those who need to know how to apply it can understand and the gory details of the theory are not as important. I used this book as my introduction to error correction and it continues to be a great reference book. The only drawback in it is since it was published in '82, it stops at convolutional coding and does not cover trellis-coded modulation or turbo codes.

5 out of 5 stars If you can only read one book on the subject...........2007-01-30

Far and away the best written, clearest, and easiest to follow book on the subject. If you only have time for one book on this subject , this is the only one you need. "Enterprise Knowledge Management" by Loshin is great, but more technical.

5 out of 5 stars Practical techniques that will have an impact on your ETL .......2004-09-29

Concepts and technical approaches for analyzing and improving the usefullness of source data are presented in a well organized and logical sequence. Not quite a roadmap/algorithm for achieving data quality; it's balanced a little more on the conceptual side. The techniques and concepts presented are ones you _will_ want to begin using if you have any data quality issues in your source data (and who doesn't), I guarantee that. As a working ETL developer referencing disparate, low quality data, this book has had an impact on our approach, our results, and our project. Short and to the point, it's an easy study also!

5 out of 5 stars A groundbreaking book! The scoop on Data Profiling........2004-09-08

Jack Olson coined the term "data profiling" and essentially founded this important new field in the area of data quality assessment. His revolutionary techniques, outlined in this book, can provide IT professionals with an important new set of tools for analyzing data quality. This is a must read for anyone working in the data quality field today. I also recommend it for people in related fields such as data warehousing, Enterprise Application Integration, and database design. With so many "me too" books in the computer field, it's a real joy to find a book that really does break new ground.

5 out of 5 stars Best Data Quality Book (repost).......2004-01-16

This book is the clearest, most practical book on data profiling and data quality that I have seen. Jack breaks down data quality issues into specific categories, and leaves you with a vision of what to do if you are building a data warehouse. His practical experience shows through very clearly and he talks to the IT developer (the reader) very effectively.

This book is on my very short list of essential reading for data warehouse professionals.

Book Description

A Straightforward, No-Nonsense Guide to Building the Most Accurate, Complete, and Useful Data Models Possible. How do I know if my data model is accurate? When is a model really complete? Is it possible for a model to be both technically perfect and of no use to an organization, and what can I do to avoid that problem? This book provides answers to these and other crucial data modeling questions. While there are plenty of books that describe the characteristics of finished high-quality data models, only The Data Modeling Handbook gets down to the nitty-gritty of actually building one. Packed with real-world examples, annotated diagrams, and a wealth of rules and best practices, this field-tested guide provides experienced data modelers, architects, and engineers with hands-on guidance from two noted data management experts.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Poor choice for experienced modelers - just ok for beginners.......2004-05-14

This book oversimplifies the examples and expects a leap of faith to truly understand the information engineering technique of data modeling.

May be good in the class room; but in actual practice there are much better references available such as Silverston, Inmon, Kimball, and of course the Zachman framework.

1 out of 5 stars Very academic in nature, more theory than reality.......2004-02-05

Anyone that has been modeling very long will see this book for what it is ... after you look at it once, you'll put it on your bookshelf and leave it there. Save yourself the money ... There are much better reference books available. Try David Hay's book on patterns, or Len Silverston, or Graeme Simsion. Check out the DAMA reference guide .. at least it's built by actual practitioners.

The help screens on the Data modeling tools are more advanced in explaining data modeling than this book.

Probably great for theorists - managers or teachers that don't know what they are doing! But the real modelers will seek help elsewhere.

1 out of 5 stars Misleading or, if you want, wrong.......2003-09-26

The authors deny the fifth normal form and state special-case rules as if they were universal. Examples: Eliminate triads; Two entities cannot have more than one relationship. Although in some specific situations the advice might be valid, anyone who is trying to learn from the reading will be misled. Less harmful, even interesting, for a professor (to learn how not to approach the teaching of DB modeling).

Poor, underdocumented examples. Oversimplification. Unfortunately at the time I had only the title to choose from. Good thing most books now have a table of contents.

Database modeling still doesn't have strong references as database theory does (Date's, Ramakrishnan's, Elmasri's only to cite three). There are excellent theoretical (Thalheim's "Entity-Relationship Modeling" is good) and philosophical approaches (finally they re-published Kent's opera-prima "Data and Reality", fabulous).

The picture is poor when it comes to hands-on modeling. Bruce's "Designing Quality Databases..." is an exception. Good and useful for someone who is developing modeling expertise. But I especially don't recommend Reingruber&Gregory's book.

5 out of 5 stars Very good one to start a good model.......2003-08-28

It is a very good book for a Data base designer and a data modeler. I strongly recommand this book to all database people.

2 out of 5 stars I'd rather visit the dentist.......2003-03-25

This book is about as much fun to read as a book about differential equations. Good concepts, but the context is very dry and puts me to sleep. I've been in the industry for several years, and I bought this book as a reference. But I find myself cringing every time I need to use it.

2 out of 5 stars Old guide with outrageous price.......2006-11-29

Several years ago I got some help from this book to understand the basic principles of BW. This book is currently very outdated. The outrageous part is that the publisher reprinted the book recently with a 50% increase in the price, without updating the content at all.
If the authors publish a new edition, I'll be the first one to buy it.

2 out of 5 stars Seriously outdated.......2005-09-22

Man, you can't keep selling the same book forever and keep everyone satisfied. I liked the way they presented the idea of BW, but it was seriously outdated. They should make enhancements and upgrades atleast one in two years

1 out of 5 stars Step by Step guide to where?.......2005-02-01

Anybody buying this book to learn some BW will be very much disappointed. Like the way the book is organised but older stuff. I can't beleive the greedy publiser is still selling this book. Not only they should stop selling, also should recall the book.

2 out of 5 stars Navigation in 2.0 and nothing more..........2004-03-19

Disappointing in both structure and content; surprising thing, cosidering that the authors come with substantial credentials.

It is more of an end-user self-training package targeting the individuals that want to memorize and troubleshoot their way through the setup rather that providing a step-by-step business case driven scenario.

Unfortunately the release that make the subject of the book is already obsolete (well, this is not authors' fault).

The CD-ROM attached to it is of little if any use;

4 out of 5 stars Great Book for Begginers !.......2004-01-29

This book is great since all the step by step instruction is accurate. This book is for SAP consultants who have little knowledge of SAP-BW concepts and would like become a SAP-BW expert. The only thing that I saw lacking is for Business Explorer query options. There are very few examples for Business Explorer. But however, I think if you play with the GUI this problem is overcome easily. THIS BOOK IS WORTH IT !!!

The premise of Improving Data Warehouse and Business Information Quality is that the quality of information stored in a database is just as measurable as the quality of the cars that come off an assembly line. Furthermore, database managers can take steps to ensure that their databases collect the best possible information.

This is a dense book, loaded with management jargon, statistical analysis, and complicated flow diagrams. You won't succeed in skimming casually through it, and you will probably get more out of the book if you have some experience with quantitative management techniques.

Regardless, this book makes excellent reading for those taking the holistic approach to database design, in which a good database considers where the information comes from, how it is used, and what results come from that use. English covers some methods for extracting information from various sources--through surveys and other methods--before launching into an elaborate discussion of information-quality metrics. --David Wall

5 out of 5 stars The bible of IQ.......2006-05-16

To me it is the bible of information quality. Larry explains information quality in all its aspects and everybody who descide to step into this area should not read but study this book. This is a very good pylon on your journey with information quality.

I strongly recomend this book to others having deep interest in this area and open to understand that information quality is not a data cleansing or data assessment only.

Book is written at excellent form.

4 out of 5 stars Deming for data.......2004-10-01

While providing some of the traditional quality assessment measures, Larry English provides a Deming 14-points approach to information quality and continuous data quality improvement. For example, instead or rewarding those who find major quality problems, change the culture to provide quality early in the process. His chapter on "assessing data definition" quality is an important step often neglected. For example, some of us are may be using minimal metadata (perhaps federally mandated standards) that are inadequate for true enterprise wide data definition. The examples included in the book (particularly in "High costs of low quality data") are instructive, and show how someone saturated with thinking about quality (like Larry English), views such simple things as getting a fax at a hotel. If you are planning a data warehouse, this book might fit nicely into the "Enterprise Infrastructure Evaluation" phase in Moss and Atre's "Business Intelligence Roadmap" terminology.

I would have liked more specific methods of detecting low quality in the section on information quality assessment. The final third of the book, on establishing the information quality environment, provides good direction, but seems too optimistic. How does a single database analyst change a corporate culture and how does a small warehouse group influence the quality processes of hundreds of diverse data sources? This is a good, thought-provoking book.

5 out of 5 stars Answers Business Executives Concerns on Data Warehousing.......2003-09-04

Data warehousing conjures many myths - both technical and business. Seldom is a marriage of business and technical skills more necessary than in data warehousing implementations.

Many data warehousing books wax on the technical issues and requirements - such as data extraction, modeling etc. These are important and bring great benefits to any implementing team. However, till recently, there has not been a good book to follow through on the data warehousing implementation.

The business benefits and how it can be enhanced from data warehousing are discussed in Larry English's book. Many reader, will no doubt, have data warehousing implementations and will want to enhance the investment. This is the book for you.

Understanding the business is an almost primordial instinct that a data warehouse designer must have. Mr. English's book will enhance on this instinct and also give tips on cutting cost and finding areas of additional business value.

Please let me know if you found this review helpful - contact me if you have any questions or suggestions. Thank you.

5 out of 5 stars This is a "must-have" guide.......2003-01-24

Some books belong on a shelf in the library; not this one! As a quality practitioner, this book stays on my desk where it belongs - in active use! "Improving Data Warehouse and Business Information Quality" is a 518 page source of enlightenment and should be considered mandatory reading; not only for Data Warehouse professionals but for every knowledge worker and business manager. This book "delivers the goods" and then goes the extra mile by transcending industries and corporate levels to promote a deep understanding of quality concepts. Not only does Larry use relevant examples to show causes and effects of poor quality, he also shares practical advice that is meaningful and can be readily implemented. Larry's writing style and human component make reading this book very enjoyable and thought provoking. I have used this book for over four years and found no other book to be as relevant and useful.

5 out of 5 stars Data is an Asset.......2001-04-17

I have been an information systems professional for several years now and I am happy to see that there is finally a focus on data as the asset it truly is. If I could put "certified data" on the Balance sheet as a separate line item, I would. I have been reading your book "Improving Data Warehouse and Business Information Quality" over the past several weeks and I have this ear-to-ear grin that some peers find disturbing. (Why does he get so excited about data?) High Quality Data=success.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible!.......2007-06-06

I have yet to find a book by Microsoft Press that is well-written, and this one is the worst of them all. It was certainly a waste of my money. There are many other books on SQL 2005 that are far better.

2 out of 5 stars Microsoft SQL Server(TM) 2005: Database Essentials Step by Step (Step By Step (Microsoft)) .......2007-03-08

A very good material for beginers. I would have like to found this material when I first took a DB class...

2 out of 5 stars Really basic.......2007-02-24

This book is oriented towards people with absolutely no prior SQL experience. The first 3 chapters are nothing more than how to install and configure Sql 2005 server. There is a decent background on database design. Overall, its just an ok book. You can learn what this book contains just by spending a little time on the web.

This book has been earning its keep from the get-go! Easy to find just what you need and put it into practice, without having to wade through the muck first.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent practise book in data quality.......2006-05-29

David has written an excellent data quality book. He focuses on a real works around data quality. He presents a practical approaches how to solve a different types of quality defects and also pointed out main quality principles. But reader must think how to apply mentioned principles and approaches in reader's organization.

Simply, good reading with application on a real cases.

5 out of 5 stars David Loshin's book and quality improvement of New Zealand National Health Information.......2005-09-21

At the time the book was published I worked as a data quality manager at the New Zealand Ministry of Health focusing on the implementation of the Data Quality Strategy for National Health Databases. It was a great help for us. We've implemented many of David Loshin's principles. Most importantly it helped us to understand that the majority of our DQ problems were not due to the poor data management processes, but because of the inadequate system's design or poor data model, which was either conceptually or contextually incorrect, incomplete or inaccurate.

5 out of 5 stars Its all in the Details.......2003-09-14

Most of the literature on Data Quality focuses on the challenges of creating and maintaining a data warehouse. Thankfully, for those of us trying to improve the integrity of the information in our OLTP databases, this book presents a methodology which is not specific to any one data environment.

This book is packed with lists of cases to consider for each step of the methodology. Each case is nicely documented. Actually, much of the book is taken filled with the documentation for each case, which may cause a person to lose sight of the methodology that is being presented.

I am person who prefers to learn concepts. I am not as interested in memorizing details. Hence, I would read this book, skipping most of the documentation in the lists, instead focusing on understanding the methodology. Thereafter, I would use this book as a reference when needing information on a particular step of the methodology.

5 out of 5 stars Data Quality in the Real World.......2003-02-06

As a data warehouse practitioner for over 12 years, I was recently challenged at my current employer to help assemble a global data quality team and process. Having done much of the work before on a piecemeal basis, we made steady progress.

When I received my copy of "Enterprise Knowledge Management," I found two important things:
1. We were definitely on the right track, and
2. There were some things we had missed.

David Loshin has put together an excellent field guide to all aspects of data quality. It is very easy to understand, and contains practical, effective suggestions. Most importantly, it is a true "soup to nuts" guide to data quality. There is very little that you might need to improve your company's "knowledge quotient" that you will not find here.

I have heartily recommended this book to a number of people when asked about data warehousing and data quality. You'll not find a better handbook anywhere.

5 out of 5 stars Management review.......2002-02-26

While I am not a technical person, this booked helped me enormously to understand the management issues that surround data quality. In today's world, I am shocked that more companies are not using this approach to save massive sums of money. This book has given me the tools to do so within my company. I highly recommend it!

    Book Description

Poor data quality can seriously hinder or damage the efficiency and effectiveness of organizations and businesses. The growing awareness of such repercussions has led to major public initiatives like the "Data Quality Act" in the USA and the "European 2003/98" directive of the European Parliament.

Batini and Scannapieco present a comprehensive and systematic introduction to the wide set of issues related to data quality. They start with a detailed description of different data quality dimensions, like accuracy, completeness, and consistency, and their importance in different types of data, like federated data, web data, or time-dependent data, and in different data categories classified according to frequency of change, like stable, long-term, and frequently changing data. The book's extensive description of techniques and methodologies from core data quality research as well as from related fields like data mining, probability theory, statistical data analysis, and machine learning gives an excellent overview of the current state of the art. The presentation is completed by a short description and critical comparison of tools and practical methodologies, which will help readers to resolve their own quality problems.

This book is an ideal combination of the soundness of theoretical foundations and the applicability of practical approaches. It is ideally suited for everyone – researchers, students, or professionals – interested in a comprehensive overview of data quality issues. In addition, it will serve as the basis for an introductory course or for self-study on this topic.

It has a pretty good coverage on the principal issues of QM. Worthy to pay. It clears up many doubts, good at results and defect recording, usage decision and inspection procedures. Illustrates you the QM general logic.
Lacks in quality certificates. Take it under your arm if you go into QM field.

5 out of 5 stars Loaded with excellent information.......2001-04-27

Just having done a QM implementation without consultants, I know how much detail there is to wade through. This book would have been invaluable during that time, and has since allowed me to make several enhancements to my implementation. it touches on nearly every aspect of the QM module, and gets fairly in depth in many areas. The process maps from SAP to the ISO/QS standards alone were worth the price of the book. if you are thinking about sap qm, don't do it without this book.
