Book Description

Many technical professionals are tossed into their new position of managing an IT department without enough training or experience let alone a clear idea of what is expected of them. Other technicians are trying to decide if they should join the ranks of management, and want the real facts about managing and managing other technical pros before they decide.

To compound the issue, most companies have become highly dependent on their IT departments for their day-to-day business operations often including revenue generation so the tasks are critical and the learning curve is steep.

The IT Managers Handbook, 2nd edition provides essential information needed to manage the new responsibilities thrust on you (or the ones you would like to have): vital tasks such as creating budgets, evaluating technologies, administering compliance, and managing staff.

A completely updated and expanded second edition that provides practical, easily accessible management advice written specifically for new IT managers:
· Brings you up to speed on those business practices most critical to effective IT operations: recruiting, budgeting, resource planning, managing personnel, and working with vendors.
· Includes expanded coverage on such critical IT management topics as security, disaster recovery, storage, government/regulatory compliance, and project management.
· Organizes information modularly so you can delve directly into only the topics that you need.
· Provides a unique management perspective on those specific technical issues with the most significant business ramifications.
· Includes new material on key technology topics such as open source, wireless, handhelds, outsourcing, offshoring, and operations, as well as updated coverage of e-commerce, remote access, intranets, and LAN/WAN management.

5 out of 5 stars Provides a thorough overview of what to expect in IT management........2007-08-09

As someone who has taken a circuitous route to the world of IT, the book, IT Manager's Handbook, Second Edition: Getting your new job done has helped me get a handle on all of the territory working in IT encompasses. When I first started working at my current IT position at a small company it seemed that my job's duties were coming at me from every direction. The authors, Bill Holtsnider and Brian D. Jaffe, do a great job addressing the variety of problems and solutions that come with managing IT. This book would best serve someone crossing the thresholds of working purely in technology or mainly in management.

At smaller businesses like where I work, it is fairly common to not have an "IT manager" or even an IT staffer. Instead often a manager, engineer, or administrative assistant will be pressed into IT service. The IT Manager's Handbook would be a valuable `read' for such an accidental IT manager.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-05-09

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars For beginners.......2007-05-12

I purchased this book for a class (legal technology) which turned out to be as remedial as this book. While I believe it could be very useful for someone who is not used to navigating a computer, it really insults the intelligence of those of us who have grown up with technology. This book does have a few useful tips that clarify certain aspects of Concordance and other legal programs, but I find it easier to explore an unfamiliar program on my own without the tedious step-by-step process Roper uses in his lessons.

2 out of 5 stars Informative, but............2006-11-07

I purchaed this book for a Paralegal class. I had two very bad experiences with the book. First, the first copy I received had no Appendix in it, so I had to send it back. It was unfortunate, as I needed the Appendix to do an assignment. Secondly, the software that was provided was expired when I tried to load it into my laptop to do homework. I called the publishing company and they promised to send me a new disk; two weeks later and I still have not received it.
I will keep it as a reference source, but I hope that another book will be written for future students. If you do not need it for a class, PLEASE look for another book.

5 out of 5 stars Great learning tool.......2005-03-24

I bought this book for a legal assistant class and I enjoyed it. I learned a lot. It's hard to learn computers from a book - but not this one. The book comes with software and has tutorials and exercises that accompany the software. My class also liked the fact that there are tons of practical applications for how computers are actually used by practicing paralegals and legal secretaries in the book. Also, when it comes to litigation support - one of the most difficult legal computer applications to master - it was fantastic. It comes with three different litigation support programs, including Summation. Summation is fairly involved to learn and the book, tutorials, exercises and software did a good job of teaching this to me. I am confident now in my ability to do basic litigation support. The chapter on using the Internet to do legal and factual research was also excellent.

4 out of 5 stars I would definately buy this again!.......2005-03-18

This book is essential for anyone working in a law office. Computers are used in nearly every aspect of working in a law firm. The book is huge - nearly 700 pages - and it covers every main type of program used in a law office. It comes with software, and lots of exercises and I thought it was very easy to read and straight forward. It covers hard topics like litigation support and Access databases in a way that I could understand without totally going over my head. The book covers both entry level and advanced topics. For example in the word processing chapter the Word tutorial had 7 lessons that got progressively more difficult, starting with basic word processing and ending with mail merges and creating tables of authorities.

5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended.......2005-03-14

I think this is a fabulous book. It comes with demonstration versions of 5 legal software programs including three litigation support programs, a time and billing program and a case management program. There were a number of in-depth, hands-on exercises for each program, so I really got to learn about each type of program by using it. Also, although I have used Access, Word, Excel and Powerpoint before, I liked the fact that there were in-depth exercises for learning legal applications for each of these programs. This is a very practical book.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars most forms not customizable.......2007-09-27

I got this to upgrade the earlier edition I had bought during grad school. Now I am starting my private practice and wanted updated versions of the forms. I now find out most of the forms (some of the most important ones) in this new edition cannot be customized, they only give PDF versions in the CD, so they are basically unusable! I cannot insert my own header as the form recommends I do and at the bottom it says it is taken from Paper Office. This is infuriating. I feel cheated. I am sure the info in the book is good, but why would they do this with the forms? This seems to me like a step back from previous edition I had and it is a misrepresentation of what the book has to offer. SO beware not all the forms are customizable therefore useless, unless you want to copy the content onto word and reformat it.

5 out of 5 stars The Paper Office.......2007-08-23

This book is proving to be very helpful for my practice. It arrived in excellent condition. I am very pleased.

5 out of 5 stars Book not received .......2007-05-13

I would love to review this book, if Amazon had sent it to me. I have spent fruitless hours trying to reach Amazon to tell them that the book has not arived but their voice mail system has been down and their web site has no place for consumer complaints. I guess Amazon thinks they are perfect.

4 out of 5 stars Very handy book for students and early career psychologists.......2007-01-11

This book has come in handy several times. It is especially useful for writing informed consents, and for creating many of the documents you don't realize you need until it is too late!

5 out of 5 stars Get this while studying for licensure! .......2006-01-28

I purchased this book while studying for my national and state licensing exams. As many other reviewers have noted, this is an excellent resource. Reading this book in between session provided me with a healthy break from the rigours of studying, while orienting me to thinking about the procedures and forms I needed to be developing for my practice once licensed. There is a wealth of information that could be a bit overwhelming as you are glowing over your new shiny license number and wondering what you need to do to get your clients into your practice. Using the strategy of tackling a form a day was also very helpful for me. This book will go a long way to helping you create a sound set of ethical and effective business practices that was probably not covered at all in your graduate training.

4 out of 5 stars One-stop gateway to the telecom world, but don't stop here........2000-07-30

I am the officer technical lead for a 50-person military intrusion detection operation. I read Mr Green's book to get a broader understanding of the telecom world, of which network intrusion detection occupies a small but highly visible part. This immense book (774 pages of text, plus URLs, acronyms, and a glossary) addressed nearly every topic I had encountered reading communications magazines, speaking with the telecom industry, and researching the Web. While no single book can provide the depth needed for truly understand a specific technology, Mr Green's work provided the foundation for future research. For example, after getting the context for SS7, I may now buy "Signalling System #7, 3rd Edition" by Travis Russell. I didn't give the book five stars, as I was not completely comfortable absorbing the material. This is the sort of book that requires you to read the whole book twice in order to appreciate the early chapters. References to technologies like ATM or frame relay in the first half of the book make much more sense after reading chapters dedicated to those issues. If Mr Green had given me slightly more to grasp while reading the early material, or had perhaps organized the book with the telecom novice in mind, I may have given five stars. Nevertheless, if you're looking for one-stop shopping for telecommunications, I highly recommend this book. Don't be fooled by the "business" classification on the dust jacket -- this book is a technical volume, with protocol headers and other details included. Great work Mr Green!

5 out of 5 stars Technical and Readable.......2000-04-01

The Irwin Handbook of telecommunications is both technical and readable. It is an excellent text for telecommunication students, managers, and vendors. The field of telecommunications is rapidly evolving. In the future ,jobs and fortunes will be won and lost by those who apply winning technologies. Consider this book a score card. You cannt tell the players without a scorecard.

5 out of 5 stars The best book on telecommunications I have ever read........1999-10-17

I read this book about a year or so ago, and I have been looking for it since then. It is the best book on telecommunications I have ever read. It goes into great depth of Switching, SS7, VMBs, PBXs, Centrex, ISDN, etc. Definitely a good buy.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Helpful to a Point.......2006-05-15

This was a basic read, for thse already into the methodology explained throught the book. Would be a useful tool for someone just starting out. I would recommend expanding on the disaster recovery portion, and possibly adding a section on managing in the non-profit arena.

2 out of 5 stars Very basic.......2004-02-23

This book is written only for the very basic beginner in IT. If you have been around an IT department for any length of time, you will find it difficult to pick up any new management thoughts in this book. For example, the entire topic of ERP systems is covered in 2 pages.

4 out of 5 stars The more things change, the more they stay the same.......2003-05-04

Technology can change all it wants but the fundamentals of being a good IT Manager have changed very little. This book hits all the major areas of focus from staffing and budgeting to infrastructure and disaster recovery.

The section entitled "Certification: How Do I Know Its Worth" applied 10 years ago, and still applies today. Right on the money and a good brief for an IT Manager building a team. Also, small but extremently important policy issues like email and security are included.

I do think that the book included slightly heavy doses of technical information such as a full page table of different memory technologies as well as an entire section entitled "How Do I Configure a Server". These would service a Network Administrator or Engineer just fine but an IT Manager ? Not so much. Don't let this detract you from the overall picture though. Too much information is certainly better than not enough.

I have to be honest, I didn't read this cover to cover. But for someone who has spent time as an IT Manager in the past and one who is looking at doing it again, I was able to re-establish concepts and draw on new tools that, no doubt, provided benefits.

1 out of 5 stars Too broad and lacks depth.......2002-08-30

This is something for a new manager with little experience in not only systems administration but supervision. This book may give a clue to someone who has just stepped into such a position but provides little depth and direction. Unfortunately, there isn't any one book out there as management is a very complex role that encompasses many disciplines, any one of which would be a volume in itself. I was very dissappointed and I find the other reviews misleading.

5 out of 5 stars full of practical examples!.......2001-03-02

This book is full of practical examples. It is useful to people who have in-depth programming knowledge but no idea how to do a budget or interview job candidates. I found this book specially timely, given that my team is composed of several technical professionals who are now considering a move into management. The information in the book is well layed out and quite accessible.

Book Description

Since 1993, the Information Security Management Handbook has served not only as an everyday reference for information security practitioners but also as an important document for conducting the intense review necessary to prepare for the Certified Information System Security Professional (CISSP) examination. Now completely revised and updated and in its fifth edition, the handbook maps the ten domains of the Information Security Common Body of Knowledge and provides a complete understanding of all the items in it. This is a must have book, both for preparing for the CISSP exam and as a comprehensive, up-to-date reference.

5 out of 5 stars A multiple vision of IT Security.......2006-03-23

This book is an excellent example of compilation of dozens of good works on IT Security. The quality of articles and the different points of view whereupon are treated turn to it an essential work. It only has a failure: such amount of information has been packed in only a volume that has forced the publisher to reduce both the font and the thickness of the paper to the maximum. Very bad for that no longer we have twenty years and in addition we were used to mark the most interesting paragraphs with a pencil.

4 out of 5 stars Book content is excellent, but paper quality is worst ever.......2005-12-16

I am reading the fifth edition of this book. In the earlier editions the book was published in three or four volumes. The fifth edition is a combination of all volumes. So that is good.

The book is a dense read. But the content is excellent. There are 163 chapters in this book. Each chapter written by different authors - experts in respective areas. So the book provides a best of breed treatment to various assorted topics. However, not all chapters are good (but most are). I'd say about 20 or so are of filler kind of chapters. Nothing really special in them. But the book is worth for the rest of the matter.

The chapters are also written to provoke further thought into each area. Kind of "first principles" approach - which I like compared to the CISSP guide approach of "here is the information, now devour it for the exam". However this book is not an exam guide (and I knew that before hand). I bought this book for the matter in it and I am very satisfied.

If you are the kind of person who want to quickly assimilate and regurgitate the matter for CISSP, then dont even bother. I am kind of person who loves to read things from the basics slowly, getting the concepts and ideas all clear in my mind and hence I plan to finish this book before reading CISSP exam guide (which by the way is also sitting on my bookshelf).

However I have a major complaint againg the publishers. Having charged One hundred thirty dollars for a 2000 page book, I'd expect the quality of paper is decent. The paper is so thin, I invariably turn two pages when I am thiking it is one page. It is so thin, even turning the page carefully damages the paper. I agree that the content is specialized and most authors hold at least two or more certifications (CISSP, CISA, SSCP etc.), but that does not warrant printing the book on really wafer thin transparent paper. Sure, the publishers need to make money, but not by compromising the quality of the paper SO MUCH.

And you'd expect this kind of book to live on your shelf for a long long time than "Teach yourself crap in 24 hours" books, but the quality of paper will make that unlikely. Hence I am giving 4 stars to a book which otherwise would deserve 6 stars

5 out of 5 stars Volumes vs editions.......2005-04-19

Some of the reviewers are confusing 'volumes' with editions. Each edition of this book contains several volumes. Each volume contains new papers, adding them to the current edition of the ISMH.

The current edition of the Information Security Management Handbook is the 5th. At present, it has only 2 volumes. This CD-ROM only contains the 1st volume of the 5th edition. There is a new CD-ROM of the ISMH with a 2005 date (ISBN 0849339422) which I *think* contains the new volume 2 of the 5th edition (ISBN 0849332109)

What makes this CD-ROM valuable over the 5thED-V1 book is that it contains the contents of the 3rd and the 4th editions! I know the 4th edition contained four volumes.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent reference!.......2003-09-04

Excellent reference!

This is an excellent security reference!

If you are looking for a pure CISSP prep book, this is not the best. But for general info sec, this is an awesome book.

    Book Description

This Handbook is about methods, tools and examples of how to architect an enterprise through considering all life cycle aspects of Enterprise Entities (such as individual enterprises, enterprise networks, virtual enterprises, projects and other complex systems including a mixture of automated and human processes). The book is based on ISO15704:2000, or the GERAM Framework (Generalised Enterprise Reference Architecture and Methodology) that generalises the requirements of Enterprise Reference Architectures. Various Architecture Frameworks (PERA, CIMOSA, Grai-GIM, Zachman, C4ISR/DoDAF) are shown in light of GERAM to allow a deeper understanding of their contributions and therefore their correct and knowledgeable use. The handbook addresses a wide variety of audience, and covers methods and tools necessary to design or redesign enterprises, as well as to structure the implementation into manageable projects.

2 out of 5 stars Not worth it.......2006-11-10

This is an overpriced set of poorly edited articles written by different authors. For people that are interested in Enterprise Architecture, I recommend checking out the TOGAF book (which btw, is available freely online at the OpenGroup website)

2 out of 5 stars Not worth the excesive price, nor the time it takes to read it.......2006-09-02

I have practiced enterprise architecture for the past 20 years or so. I read Zacman's seminal '87 work in about '89. Before EA was EA there was Martin, and I practiced that. I have used DODAF and C4ISR, FEAF and more. I would not use this GERAM. It has the feel of academics and windbag consultants justifying their existance.

The book is a collection of articles, a survey. The first chapter is poorly edited with malapropisms and missing words. This is forgivable.

Keep reading and another chapter devotes itself to mapping other frameworks. The author here butchers Zachman and ignores the primative/composite distinction central to John's work. It also shows only a superficial grasp of DoDAF that would make Cathy Sowa frown in her kindly way. Then there are several fringe works from academia. This is poor insight, but perhaps tollerable.

Then there are many pages of poor diagrams scanned from hand drawn, and a house of cards that seems unworkable. The other reviewers found this valuable, but I cannot see it being applied in practice. Prove me wrong- it is only my impression. I know that I will not be trying these methods unless forced by a customer.

Finally the hefty tome is $121. I would rather take my wife to diner at a nice resturant, the ROI is higher.

I feel cheated by the authors. EA is not only for academics boys, some must practice it.

On the positive side there are many ideas in the book and some might bear fruit for the reader. A great deal of effort was surely applied to creating this mass of concepts, some with more depth than other bits. Still, I would not buy this work unless you felt compelled to read every available EA source. Read Zachman, Spewak and Bernard instead- all 3 together will be cheaper than this and far better more beneficial in practice.

5 out of 5 stars Flexible approach to enterprise architecture.......2004-07-02

This book is a collection of articles that describe the key elements of the Generalized Enterprise Reference Architecture and Methodology {GERAM}, with each article written by an expert in a particular topic area, and the whole skillfully glued together by the editors.

My take on GERAM - having suffered through more approaches to architecture than I care to relate, some good and some bad, the GERAM approach is a beacon of sanity. First, it logically and clearly divides architecture into domains, which are interconnected as follow:

    (1) Generalized enterprise reference architecture (high-level model for integration) employs an enterprise modeling methodology that uses enterprise modeling language(s). The language(s) are implemented as enterprise engineering tools, which are used to develop enterprise models, which are, in turn, used to design operational systems.

    (2) Also feeding into the enterprise modeling tools are: partial enterprise models, which are supported by general enterprise modeling concepts, and directly support enterprise modeling tools.

    (3) Finally, there are 'Enterprise Modules', comprised of processes, staff resources, and technology, which are the basis for implementing the operational system.

From the above, which is hard to visualize in a text description, one can see that GERAM is a pick and choose model that has a great deal of flexibility. It's not a perfect model, but it's also not rigid, which is the reason I like it so.

With the context provided above, the book addresses GERAM in five parts, each of which contains relevant articles:

Part I Architecture Frameworks, is a well stated and illustrated of GERAM and how it maps to other architecture frameworks.

Part II Strategy Making and Business Planning, covers business aspects ranging from corporate strategy to developing the business model, to developing the enterprise concept and associated business plan.

Part III Defining the Requirements for Enterprise Change, provides a focus on modeling.

Part IV Developing the Master Plan, steps you through the design phase.

Part V consists of four case studies that reinforce the preceding parts of this book.

Do you need yet another architecture approach? The answer is, it depends. I do not view GERAM as much a distinct architecture approach as much as it's an approach to architecture. I believe that it can be applied - in part or in its entirety - to any architecture model because of the inherent flexibility. I certainly believe that this book is an essential resource for any enterprise architect because of the way it separates key elements of an architecture.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for any Enterprise Architect / Engineer..........2004-02-27

This is perhaps the most comprehensive book in this discipline. The book is almost encyclopaedic. As it covers several frameworks like Zachman, GERAM, PERA, ARIS, it provides a very good comparison and contrast between these. This book is a great text book for any Graduate Level course in Software / Systems Engineering, Business Information Systems and Architecture.
